Carbon-Cutting trailer add-ons could cost you the earth, warns Schmitz Cargobull

Schmitz Cargobull UK Technical Director Derek Skinner has warned that commercial vehicle fleets could be wasting money by incorrectly specifying aerodynamic add-ons for their trailers. Skinner has raised concerns after discovering buyers are requesting addons such as vortex generators and side skirts, without checking if such additions will genuinely reduce fuel costs– or if they might in fact increase them. Aerodynamic add-ons add weight, and depending on how each trailer is used, that extra weight could negate any aerodynamic fuel-saving benefits. On top of this, the operator may even incur additional fuel costs Schmitz Cargobull UK Technical Director to run a trailer that looks efficient, but actually produces more Derek Skinner CO2because of the impact of that extra weight. Skinner says: “There is a prevailing school of thought that you should specify aerodynamic add-ons simply because it makes a trailer look more economical and environmentally friendly to the unassuming general public, without any reference to the actual financial or environmental argument. In most circumstances, you’ll save more money simply by specifying a trailer with a lighter chassis.” Calculating the impact of add-ons is complex and often requires knowledge of the mass density of air, drag co-efficients and their relation to object geometry, skin friction and form drag. Therefore it is no surprise that fleet operators are more likely to choose equipment that intuitively looks like it will do the job and boost fuel efficiency, without necessarily checking the facts and figures first. Schmitz Cargobull uses a research methodology developed independently at the University of Huddersfield to simplify the calculation process, and determine the exact profiles of where a trailer will benefit from add-ons. Skinner says: “Aerodynamic add-ons can be a benefit in certain circumstances, but any business looking to specify trailers needs to properly understand how they intend to use them, and this involves doing the research and understanding the numbers.” He concludes: “The science shows that a trailer with full aerodynamics ends up being less economical than a standard Schmitz Cargobull trailer when its motorway miles drop below 65 to 75 per cent. If your trailer’s mileage on the motorway is sub-optimal, add-ons are probably a waste of time and money.”

Mercedes-Benz Actros brings Christmas gifts delivery to LauraLynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice

LauraLynn – Ireland’s Children’s Hospice was the lucky charity chosen to receive a hamper of Christmas goodies selected from the Mercedes-Benz Christmas Stars 2015 catalogue which they, in turn, were free to use in raising vital revenue to help fund their charitable work. The presentation was inspired by a ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ gift giveaway competition organised by the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle division through its Facebook channel. In it, customers were invited to nominate their charity of choice to whom Mercedes-Benz would present a hamper containing 12 gifts - one for each of the twelve days of Christmas. The gifts hamper included a ride-on Actros truck, a remote control Mercedes-Benz GLA, men’s and ladies’ watches, key rings and Christmas baubles amongst others. As part of the competition, twelve individual Facebook winners were also awarded a prize each. Praising LauraLynn for the invaluable work they do, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles sales manager Fergus Conheady said “Christmas is an important time for charities. Through this small initiative, Mercedes-Benz delights in supporting LauraLynn and the incredible work they do for the children in their care.” LauraLynn is Ireland’s only children’s hospice, providing palliative care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their Sharon Morrow, chief executive of LauraLynn – Ireland’s families, both in their hospice in Leopardstown and in the comfort of Children’s Hospice, pictured receiving a Christmas gifts hamper from Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles marketing a children’s own home through their LauraLynn@HOME coordinator Robert Dunne, delivered to their Leopardstown programme. headquarters in a black Mercedes-Benz Actros truck

Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic engine oil helps Swedish Transport Company achieve 2% fuel economy

In recent trials in Sweden, an independent haulage company achieved 2 per cent fuel savings through use of a lowviscosity, Mobil Delvac™-branded synthetic engine oil. Mertz Transport AB, which operates a fleet of 115 trucks of various makes and is based in Malmö in Sweden’s southernmost county, conducted the trial with two trucks using different synthetic engine oils between December 2013 and October 2014. The 10-month trial, which followed discussions about fuel costs between Mertz Transport and ExxonMobil’s sales and technical engineers in Sweden, involved two new Mercedes Actros Euro V trucks. One used ExxonMobil’s Mobil Delvac™ XHP LE 10W-40 engine oil with the other using lower viscosity Mobil Delvac 1™ LE 5W-30. Both oils meet MercedesBenz’s required MB 228.51 lubricant specification for low-ash multigrade engine oils. Both trucks drove the same route with the same freight, between Malmö in southern Sweden and Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast. The truck using the lower viscosity engine oil, Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30, witnessed a 2 per cent gain in fuel economy, which could translate into a financial saving of SEK 8,454 (ca. £644) per truck, including all related expenses (such as filters and waste oil). The data from the trial was recorded using MB FleetBoard®, a Mercedes-Benz fleet and driver measurement and reporting data system. Brice Ilhardoy, Europe sector manager for commercial vehicle lubricants at ExxonMobil, said: “The results of this 10-month trial are very compelling. They derive from the benefit of using a 5W-30 lower viscosity lubricant, which helps the engine work less hard than with a 10W-40 viscosity oil, both on start-up and subsequent driving. “The trial results show the potential of a 5W-30 grade lubricant to help fleet operators throughout Europe achieve reduced fuel consumption through reduced engine energy usage,” Ilhardoy continued. Stig Mertz, managing director of Mertz Transport AB, said: “We were very impressed to observe the decisive fuel economy increase that Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 accomplished compared to Mobil Delvac XHP LE 10W-40 engine oil in these trials. We will consider switching our entire 115truck fleet to this lower viscosity synthetic lubricant and hope to benefit both from improved fuel economy and streamlined logistics and purchase benefits”. Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 is ExxonMobil’s fully synthetic, heavy-duty diesel engine oil. It combines engine protection for modern low emission vehicles with benefits such as engine durability, emissions system protection and extended drain capability. Mobil Delvac XHP LE 10W40 is a synthetic diesel engine oil engineered to provide lubrication to modern, low emission engines used in severe applications. This engine oil is designed using base oils that provide low temperature fluidity, high temperature viscosity retention and volatility control.

New ‘Fuel-Saving’ Michelin X Line Energy tyres approved for Mercedes-Benz Actros

Michelin has unveiled two new tyres in what the Company terms its ‘fuel-saving X Line Energy range’, counting MercedesBenz as a launch customer after the manufacturer approved the fitments for its Actros truck. Michelin’s new 385/55 R 22.5 X Line Energy F steer and 315/70 R 22.5 X Line Energy D2 drive tyres will be available for customers to specify as original equipment for Actros trucks shipped from January 2016. When operated in conjunction with a trailer featuring Michelin’s current X Line Energy T tyres, this will mark the first Michelin has unveiled its “fuel saving X Line complete set of truck tyres on the market to obtain an A-rating Energy range” for fuel efficiency in line with EU tyre labelling standards. The X Line Energy F steer tyre in its new 385/55 R 22.5 size benefits from an innovative circumferential ‘raindrop sipe’ tread pattern, which evolves in the last one-third of its life to help generate grip levels close to that offered when the tyre was newly fitted. This new tyre also incorporates Michelin’s anti-splash technology, pioneered by Michelin for aircraft tyres, which is designed to reduce the projection of high water from the sides of the front axle tyres in wet weather. The latest generation X Line Energy D2 drive tyres also feature Michelin’s ‘Tower Pump’ sipes, which improve braking and transverse grip on wet surfaces by temporarily storing the water in the contact patch. At last, you can save with All-Ireland routing and scheduling that really works

Autumn 2015 saw the launch of a new software solution for Irish truck and transport operators – Truckstops Ireland. Such a development might not at first sight seem groundbreaking, yet in many ways this is. Truckstops is a vehicle routing and scheduling optimisation solution (VRS), and is used by vehicles operators around the world to plan collections and deliveries quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. For years, operators in the Republic looked enviously at their counterparts elsewhere, who were using this type of system as a matter of course. When would they be able to do the same? The stumbling block was the lack of a consistent, standardised postcode system to identify the locations of call points in the Republic. In most developed countries postcodes represent a key building block for VRS systems, since they provide an ideal way to geocode addresses (convert them to accurate geographical locations). Ireland simply didn’t have such a system. Some Irish operators have tried introducing routing and scheduling systems regardless, but success has tended to be variable. Everything changed in June 2015, when the Irish Government launched its Eircodes. Not only has this system introduced postcodes for all 2.2 million Irish addresses; it also establishes a unique seven-character code for each address – even for those such as flats that form part of a larger building. That means the system is ideally suited to pinpoint-accurate geocoding and use in routing and scheduling systems. So is the way finally open for Irish transport operators to start using routing and scheduling systems at will? Not quite. Eircodes have to be “claimed” by the property owner or resident, and roll-out has been uneven. It is thought that more than 60 per cent of Irish addresses now do have an Eircode allocated, but that leaves many without one. There have also been reports that allocation to Irish-language addresses has sometimes been problematic. There is another factor to consider, too. Many transport operators from the Republic deliver across the border in Northern Ireland, and many operators from there also deliver in the Republic. A truly flexible VRS for the island of Ireland has to take account of these cross-border movements. In short, existing routing and scheduling systems don’t necessarily represent simple “drop-in” solutions that will automatically work in Ireland. Something more finely targeted is necessary. Mapmechanics, the developer of the Truckstops family, reckons it has come up with exactly that in Truckstops Ireland. It contains the full functionality of the latest version 20 of Truckstops, plus a set of features uniquely suited to Irish operational requirements. First and foremost, it can geocode addresses from Eircodes, which overcomes those perennial problems with shared and duplicated addresses. Where it gets clever is when it encounters addresses that don’t yet have an Eircode. With these, it automatically

8

accesses the HERE online map database, which geocodes from traditional street addresses. Meanwhile, Truckstops can also recognise addresses with Northern Ireland postcodes (right down to the most detailed unit level), and will geocode these accordingly. As with any system of this kind, Truckstops may not always get every location right, but it has ways to deal with this. The calculated routes can be displayed against a satellite mapping backdrop, and the operator can check for anomalies and drag illogical stops to a more precise or appropriate location. The new location can then be saved, so that future calls at that address will be placed correctly as a matter of course. In effect, the longer Truckstops Ireland is used, the more accurate it gets. Since calls to addresses without a postcode or Eircode are likely to require the most attention, Truckstops can highlight these on screen to make them easier to pick out and correct. What else do you get with Truckstops Ireland? It incorporates the latest version of an established product that has been progressively developed for over 25 years. Truckstops is used to calculate both fixed routes for repeating deliveries, and dynamic routes that change every day – home shopping deliveries, for instance. It is also often used strategically in ”what-if” exercises, perhaps to work out the costs of a potential transport contract, or to find out if adding another depot would reduce overall transport costs. Truckstops can schedule centrally over a dispersed depot network. You can set a wide range of parameters, such as restricting some types of call to specific vehicle types or drivers with special skills, and Truckstops can plan deliveries and collections on the same journey. It can create schedules that extend over more than a day, and can plan journeys that start from remote locations such as drivers’ homes as well as from the depot. Typically, data from an order management system is transferred automatically to Truckstops for geocoding and scheduling, and then the outcome is passed back to the corporate system for further processing. Schedules can also be printed and output for reporting and analysis, allowing users to monitor the timing, cost and other details of each delivery. Schedules can also be sent to drivers’ smartphones, where the data can integrate with satnav systems, guiding drivers to each call point. There are well established links with related software systems. For instance, Truckstops is pre-configured to output its schedules to a wide range of leading telematics and tracking systems – making it easy to compare actual delivery performance with the plan, and take remedial action. Support from Mapmechanics goes much further than Truckstops alone. The company also supplies Optisite, a network optimisation solution, and its allmapdata division supplies and configures a wide range of worldwide mapping and demographic data, including an enhanced Eircodes dataset with map coordinates for all addresses and free boundary data for principal post towns. Mapmechanics also specialises in geographic information systems (GIS) and business intelligence (BI) solutions, including Geoxploit, which combines leading GIS software with pre-configured data. Users include Britain’s Stobart group. For further information: Visit www.truckstopsrouting.com or call Mapmechanics on 020 8568 7000 IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

DAF Transport efficiency Driver Challenge - so you think you can drive?

DAF Trucks has launched its DAF Transport Efficiency Driver Challenge – a UK-wide search to find Britain’s best commercial vehicle drivers. Under the rubric ‘so you think you can drive’, and with the DAF Dealer network supporting the search, DAF Trucks has already embarked upon compiling a shortlist of 20 of the country’s best drivers. The shortlisted 20 drivers will participate in a series of challenging practical and knowledge-based assessments centred around an all-expenses-paid, two-day, live event at the Millbrook testing facility in Bedfordshire in May. The top three winning drivers will be crowned as the DAF Transport Efficiency Champions and invited to participate in a ‘classified’, once-in-a-lifetime driving challenge, taking them across the continent and finishing at the home of DAF Trucks in Eindhoven.

To compete in the challenge, DAF Trucks is expecting drivers to exhibit impeccable levels of: • Driving style, performance and efficiency across different sizes of truck and driving conditions. • Road knowledge, legislation and the Highway Code. • Vehicle knowledge, defect reporting and pre-use checks. The DAF Transport Efficiency Driver Challenge is being rolled out across the UK and is open to any driver with a clean C+E Licence, a Driver Card and a Driver CPC. To truly maximise the potential of identifying the nation’s elite drivers,

Stertil Koni replaces vehicle lifts damaged in storm

the Challenge is open to non-DAF drivers, too. Candidates must apply by visiting www.daf.co.uk/thechallenge where they will also be required to complete some initial questions on truck- and transport-related topics. You have your license so you can drive, but have you ever wondered just how good you really are?” asks DAF Trucks driver trainer and press truck demo driver, Mandy Wannerton. “Are you confident enough to pit your skills against your peers? If so, here’s your chance. You may be the most fuel efficient driver on your fleet,” she says, “or the most experienced, or even the most technically knowledgeable, but, whether an owner driver or a fleet driver, we’re looking for the whole package – somebody who can do the lot. We’ve devised a full range of tests to identify the best of the best.” The live two-day event at Millbrook will be overseen by Mandy Wannerton, assisted by a judging panel of industry experts. The top 20 drivers will undergo a series of stringent practical and theoretical tests, while receiving expert leadership from Mandy and her driver training team. Drivers will also have the chance to driver the full range of DAF trucks.

Stertil Koni, the UK's leading vehicle lift specialist, has supplied four sets of lifts to RT Williams to replace models that were damaged when the company's workshop roof was virtually destroyed during a devastating storm. Based in Merthyr Tydfil, RT Williams offers a wide variety of services for commercial vehicles throughout Wales including servicing, repair, MOT testing and a 24 hour recovery service. The company handles almost every type of vehicle, including PSVs, HGVs, trucks, vans and taxis, and has relied upon a range of Stertil Koni lifts to support its operations for many years. "We've worked the lifts hard and they've given us excellent trouble-free operation," says Lyn Williams. "So I had no hesitation in ordering Stertil lifts to replace the ones that were damaged during the storm." The replacement lifts include two sets of ST4120 4-post lifts, a set of ST4125 4-post lifts and a Sky 200 Recessed model. Offering respective safe lifting capacities of 12 and 12.5 tonnes, the ST4120 and ST4125 models are heavy duty lifts featuring electro-hydraulic lifting systems. Various platform lengths are available - 4.5m, 6.2m and 8m - and the space between the platforms is adjustable from 800mm up to 1650mm. This flexibility makes them ideal for use in workshops that deal with a range of heavy duty vehicles, including narrow tracked fork trucks. Driven rams are located at the four corner posts and all are electronically synchronised ensuring safe and smooth operation. Importantly, the free-standing control box can be positioned at the most convenient post for every installation. Allowing perfect access to vehicles, the 20 tonne capacity SKY 200 Recessed model is free from cross beams, allowing unrestricted access to raised vehicles, and features a drive-on height of just 350mm. Depending on user requirements, the lift may be specified with a platform length between seven and 14.5 metres. Even with the longest platform, only two lifting legs are required and each leg incorporates its own measuring device, ensuring smooth and level synchronisation to within 15mm. The Sky 200 is electronically controlled from a well-positioned control panel to ensure ease of use and safety for workshop technicians. One popular feature of this model is its streamlined design that allows installation into narrow bays thereby enabling workshops to optimise their usable space. "The severity of the storm caused a great deal of damage and, understandably, dealt a considerable blow to RT Williams," says Tony Edge, Stertil Koni's general manager. "However, we are well geared up to respond to this kind of situation and were pleased to install replacement lifts within a matter of weeks."

In Croke Park on Saturday 12th December 2015, JF Dunne Insurances and AIG celebrated a unique milestone – 35 years in business with 14 extraordinary clients – private bus operators, who have been with JF Dunne Insurances since the AIG Bus scheme was incepted in 1980. Launched in March 1980 as a motor-only product, the bus and coach scheme has evolved into a comprehensive package now covering vehicle, driver, passenger, the public and protecting today's professional bus and coach operator in this highly responsible and potentially catastrophic risk area. The event was celebrated in Croke Park with GAA legends; Kilkenny hurler Jackie Tyrell and Dublin footballer Denis Bastick, who were on hand to entertain guests in the Players’ Lounge and on a unique tour of Croke Park where they shared their personal memories of playing on the hallowed grounds. There followed a formal lunch and an awards ceremony with clients individually presented with a commemorative piece of Newbridge Silverware, a personalised newbridge pen and a certificate of recognition for their 35 year’s loyalty to AIG & JF Dunne Insurances. Aidan Connaughton, AIG Consumer Lines Manager EMEA South Zone presented a signed All-Blacks 2015 Jersey to John Dunne, Chairman of JF Dunne Insurances and thanked both John and his clients for their loyalty to AIG. John Dunne, in turn, spoke passionately about each of the 14 clients and their partners, thanking AIG for its professionalism, loyalty and commitment to the success of this unique programme in Ireland: “35 years is a long time for any relationship but in business it is unique. When you think that we have to renew our relationship each year, negotiate and analyse it, it becomes all the more unique. You are now part of one of Ireland’s most unique insurance stories and I thank you sincerely for being with me on this great journey over the past 35 years”. “I want to thank AIG who trusted me to deliver on this program. Each and every person I have met down through the years in AIG have been exceptional insurance professionals and without them there would be no bus and coach insurance program.”

11 million tonnes of trade traffic reported by Port of Cork and Bantry Bay Port Company in 2015

Total traffic through the Port of Cork and Bantry Bay Port Company in 2015 reached a total of 11 million tonnes. Total Trade traffic at the Port of Cork reached 9.8 million tonnes up a significant 10% on 2014 traffic figures. Bantry Bay Port Company dropped slightly from 1.3 million tonnes in 2014 to 1.1 million tonnes in 2015. These figures are extremely positive for the port and show trade is beginning to return to pre-recession times. Total container volumes through both Tivoli and Ringaskiddy Container Terminals in the Port of Cork grew by 8% compared to 2014 figures with over 205,000 TEU’s handled. This is very encouraging particularly as the Port received planning permission to move all container operations to Ringaskiddy in the near future. Dry bulk cargos such as animal feed, increased by 2% in 2015 while fertilisers and cereals both decreased slightly. Liquid bulk cargo, predominantly the oil traffic through Whitegate Oil Refinery, currently owned and operated by Phillips 66, continues to have a significant impact on the overall traffic through the Port of Cork with oil traffic in 2015 showing an increase of almost 20%. This significant increase in 2015 is attributed to an increase in demand from the domestic market as recovery takes hold and due to maintenance shut-down in the Whitegate refinery in 2014 which affected refining for a six week period. Traffic from the Bantry Bay Oil Storage Terminal is operated by Zenith Energy, which accounts for 100% of the commercial traffic through Bantry Bay Port. Commenting on the 2015 trade traffic results, Port of Cork Chairman Mr. John Mullins said: ‘We are pleased with the total trade traffic figures across both Bantry and Cork in 2015. Achieving traffic figures which are in line with pre-recessionary time highlights the beginning of the positivity returning to the market and I am confident that we can sustain this growth across 2016. Container traffic increased by 8% indicating the confidence in the consumer market for imports and the growth of exports in the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors. The Port’s move to Ringaskiddy is vitally important to meet expected further growth in this market.’ He continued “Whitegate oil Refinery operated by Phillips 66 is a key customer within the port and we are extremely encouraged to see oil traffic up compared to 2014. Phillips 66 currently has the refinery on the market for sale and we would remain hopeful that it would be sold as an operating refinery.” The Port of Cork cruise business grows year on year with 55 scheduled cruise liners calling to Cork in 2015. In total these liners carried in excess of 145,000 passengers and crew to the region. These transit visitors are an excellent economic stimulus for Cork, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy for eight months of the year. The Port of Cork has completed work on upgrading the facilities at Cobh Cruise Terminal and can now handle ‘Quantum Class’ vessels, which are the largest liners operating in Europe today. The Port of Cork continues to work closely with cruise lines to increase calls to both Port of Cork and Bantry Bay. Brittany Ferries had another very positive year with their seasonal service from Cork to Roscoff carrying 84,378 passengers in 2015. This figure is up compared with 2014 and it is hoped that 2016 will be another busy year for Brittany Ferries when sailings resume. In 2015 the Port of Cork was granted planning permission for the Ringaskiddy Port Redevelopment which is a milestone for the Port of Cork and particularly the Munster region. According to Chairman Mr. Mullins, receiving planning permission for the Ringaskiddy Port Redevelopment has given the organisation a renewed confidence in the future of trade for the Cork region. He said; ‘Not only is this a great boost for our company but most importantly for our customers, who can now confidently plan for the future, knowing the port has the capacity to accommodate their growth.’ IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Following a public tender process in November, advance works on the project are due to begin in January 2016. These advance works are a positive step in terms of the Ringaskiddy port redevelopment and will include site clearance to the proposed container compound area which will serve to prepare the site to ensure the main works are not delayed. The next step is to launch the main works tender process in April 2016, with a view to contract being awarded in Q3 2016. It is estimated that 849 FTE jobs will be created during the construction of the Ringaskiddy Redevelopment Project which the Port aims to have operating by Q4 2018.

MAN Truck & Bus UK breaks new ground with Weir Waste

Three new MAN TGS hookloaders are on the road servicing the needs of the Midlands’ leading independent recycling and waste management firm Weir Waste. The vehicles, provided through MAN’s TrucksToGo initiative, are replacements in Weir Waste’s 50strong fleet and will be operating throughout the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. They are joining the fleet following on from the success of a MAN TGX 26.440 6x2 tractor unit which was brought in by Weir Waste managing director Danny Weir late last year. He said: “We brought in the MAN TGX as an addition to our fleet and to help with our increasing workload late last year and like how it has performed. “I have also spoken to a friend in the industry who runs MANs and I have had a look at those and asked his opinion of them. MAN have put together a good package. “The price and service package made it an attractive proposition for Weir Waste and we will certainly be looking at the possibility of more MANs as we replace our fleet.” MAN Sales Executive Jon-Paul Allenza added: “It is great feedback to hear that customers are turning to MAN through word of mouth and that other customers are so pleased with their vehicles that they are happy to make a recommendation. “We supplied Weir Waste with the TGX at a time when there was a pressing need for one in the business and we are equally pleased that this has been so well received that Danny has chosen MAN again when he looked to replace three vehicles in his fleet. “We look forward to doing more business with Weir Waste in the coming months.”

Logistics Integrator GateHouse Wins Groundbreaking GPS Tracking Contract

Transport logistics integrator GateHouse of Denmark today announced that it has won a strategic contract for its pioneering real time multi-GPS tracking platform ghTrack. The contract is from award-winning European road freight specialists Freightex. For the first time, the firm can now use ghTrack to integrate and view all truck positioning data from more than 100 sub-contractors and large suppliers on one screen in real time whatever telematics or GPS system they use. By integrating ghTrack into its daily operations, Freightex gets an improved visibility and overview of all truck positions, eliminates phone calls with drivers to get a status report on deliveries, provides a pro-active customer service of delivery progress, and has a tool to measure the quality of freight services. It can also use ghTrack to identify any delivery bottlenecks. "GateHouse's ghTrack platform is a product of our data-driven time and is destined to become the technology unifier for the logistics industry," says Freightex CEO, Tim Phillips. "Freightex can now offer a full control tower solution to our customers as this provides us with real time location data for our customer loads whatever the logistics or GPS system used by our sub-contractors. We now have an early warning if a collection or delivery is running late, which gives our staff much more time to make alternative plans if necessary". "Clearly, GateHouse is delighted to win this groundbreaking contract," adds GateHouse CEO, Michael Bondo Andersen. "Every minute counts in the logistics industry. With ghTrack at the core of its operations, Freightex paves the way for its sub-contractors and large suppliers to share GPS data and for the firm to better engage with customers and provide more efficient information about loads." GateHouse advises that the firm has a blue-chip pipeline of early adopters for its ghTrack technology. The ghTrack platform is the result of five years investment in building a unique and scalable data aggregator solution. It is the first platform to be hardware-agnostic and integrates all GPS and telematics systems. The aggregated data stream easily integrates into any TMS or ERP system. With the ghTrack platform, shippers and transporters alike now have one comprehensive and manageable overview of their operations. It provides customers with proactive information on their deliveries, sends notifications if a delivery deviates from the route or stops unexpectedly, shows individual deliveries on a map, monitors sensor data such as temperature and allows users to perform statistical analysis and bench-marking of transports.

The new VanContact Winter: economical and safe

With the onset of cold weather, Continental presents the VanContact Winter, a new winter tyre for light commercial vehicles and vans. Along with superior safety characteristics on snowy and icy surfaces and precision handling on snow-covered or wet roads, this impressive load carrier also offers significantly improved fuel efficiency. The greater economy compared to the VancoWinter 2 is important not only for customers in the commercial sector but also for private customers fitting their vans with the new tyre. The rolling resistance has also been reduced by a substantial 15 percent over its predecessor. This is due to an advanced silica compound which lessens tyre deformation on entering the contact patch, thereby reducing energy loss, as well as to an improved overall design. The VanContact Winter owes its five percent improvement

in performance when braking on snow and nine percent improvement when braking in the wet to both its tread compound and its optimized sipe concept. Sinus sipes in the tread center and an interrupted sipe structure in the shoulder blocks significantly increase the number of gripping edges in the longitudinal direction. Zigzag circumferential grooves and evenly spaced snow pockets in the shoulder blocks improve the compression of snow in the grooves, making for greater grip. The new VanContact Winter is now available in 12 sizes, with plans to further expand the product range through 2016. For more information on Continental’s complete range, visit www.continental-tyres.co.uk

Norscot Truck & Van Dundee becomes DAF Trucks’ 55th ATF location

Norscot Truck & Van Dundee has become the latest DVSA-appointed Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) in the DAF dealer network. The appointment brings the total of DAF-accredited MOT testing stations to 55 – the eighth to be opened in 2015 alone, and with more DAF locations identified for upgrade in 2016. With over 400 ATFs in total in the UK, DAF’s ATF network provides significantly more reach for operators than any other truck manufacturer, while also making up a sizeable proportion of its own 131 UK dealer locations. Norscot, which also has locations in Aberdeen, Inverness and Perth, has invested £300,000 in its new ATF lane and associated equipment. The move comes in response to an increasing number of customers, including local non-DAF operators, demanding more flexibility for their vehicles’ MOT

time slots. General Manager at Norscot Truck & Van in Dundee, Ian McGregor, said, “This is about providing a better service to the whole operating community, not just our DAF customers. It’s about maximising uptime, and it’s about driving up standards of safety and efficiency. “Our modern facility here in Dundee offers truck operators significant operational benefits over their existing test facility arrangements,” he said, “extended testing hours, greater flexibility on booking test ‘slots’ and reduced travelling time – all the time increasing productivity for operators.” Norscot’s fully equipped facility in Dundee comprises: Five bays including 27-metre service pit Individual wheel lifts Individual bay ramps for truck and van Recovery truck

Today, and based on the DVSA’s own ‘Preparer ID’ figures, the whole of DAF’s dealer network boasted a 97.5% MOT FirstTime-Pass-Rate (including PRS – Passes with Rectification at Station) in 2015. DAF now has over 1,500 technicians independently accredited and certified under the IRTEC scheme. Undertaking this stringent assessment process has been a huge commitment and investment by the DAF Dealer Network.

Drug driving measures will save lives on our roads – O’Mahony

“New anti-drug driving measures will reduce deaths and injuries on our roads according to Fine Gael TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications, John O’Mahony. Deputy O’Mahony was speaking after the announcement by the Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohue of new measures to tackle drug driving. “These measures are designed to make our roads safer. I believe that the penalties introduced this week will make drug users will think twice before they get behind the wheel of a car. The penalties are a €5,000 fine and/or six months in prison and one year disqualification for a first offence and two years thereafter. “This legislation is about road safety, bringing into line alcohol and drug testing to make it consistent. The message is the same as it is in relation to alcohol; if you consume drugs you present a serious risk. “Motorists will be required to give a sample of saliva if they suspect drug driving after an accident. IN the absence of an accident taking place, we have other legislation in place that if Gardaí form a reasonable view that a person is in a dangerous position and may be under the influence of drugs, Gardaí will then be able to test without consent. “There is growing evidence that drugs can impair driving. A study over ten years has found that the presence of drugs were found in 10% of road deaths and of those 60-70% had cannabis in their system. “I particularly welcome that the issue of prescription drugs are addressed in the new measures. This is something I focused on when the issue of drug driving came before the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications.”

100 year old Broscombe lightens up with DAF

With 100 years in business, and 95 of those in transport, the family firm of SE Broscombe clearly knows what it takes to stay in business. Operations Director, Dan Brooke, says, “We stick to what we know. If something is working well, we see no reason to change it.” Fortunately for DAF, the manufacturer’s existing vehicles on the Broscombe fleet are ‘working well’, so when a business opportunity presented itself, in the shape of more work if a heavier duty truck-mounted crane could be brought onto the fleet, the choice of truck to mount it on was an easy one. SE Broscombe’s new DAF CF 8x2 ticks a lot of boxes continued Brooke, saying, “The new HMF 60t/m crane lifts 10 tonnes at truck side and 3.3 tonnes up to 14.6 m away, which lets us talk to customers about a lot more work than when we only had a lighter HIAB unit. “The real difference though, is that the CF is so much lighter than comparable quality trucks that, even with the big new crane, we can get a genuine 10t payload on it. Its lift and steer axles also give us terrific manoeuvrability on building and construction sites. We’d been having to farm a lot of heavier work out – now we don’t. Alongside general haulage work, Broscombe has long-standing contracts that take it onto sites when major food distribution operations need back-up boiler and generator installations to cope with emergencies and short-term refurbishment works. Other recent work included moving large dust-extraction units for a major luxury car manufacturer, while having the DAF CF specified for ADR compliance has also won the firm new work carrying IBCs of treatment chemicals onto sewage farms. All ideal crane work, but all needing the increased payload capacity afforded by the new DAF CF 8x2. Based in Huddersfield, the company does its own service and maintenance work on site. Dan Brooke himself is a time-served DAF apprentice fitter, and the firm employs a fully trained, full-time fitter in its own workshops. Though another manufacturer has maintained a small presence in Broscombe’s 15 strong fleet, DAF is by far the major brand. Brooke is very clear why this is, stating, “We’ve run DAFs for many a year; for us, they’re tried and tested. Fuel is always good and they never miss a beat. We reckon they’re among the best rigids you can buy – if not the very best. Our new CF with its increased payload is already good for us, but its flexibility will be even better shortly. The chassis was specified as a draw-bar, and we’re genuinely excited about the added business opportunities this will bring when it is properly operational with a new trailer currently on order.” The DAF presence is also considered important by Broscombe for its drivers. The company accessorises its trucks to high level, with items such as TVs, fridges, microwaves and other comforts fitted as appropriate to the work being done. The operator has a significantly long-service driver workforce, the majority working for the company for a good many years now. With the family focus continuing strongly, and the right operating decisions seemingly being made, not many would bet against SE Broscombe being around and successful for another 100 years.

Scania Parts Logistics expands its use of RFID

Be at the right place at the right time with RFID! Currently, approximately 26,000 ordered items leave the Global Parts Distribution Center of Scania Parts Logistics in Opglabbeek, Belgium every day. To satisfy the ever-increasing orders from customers worldwide, the site has recently been significantly expanded. After the success of the employment of an RTLS-RFID system in the Scania Parts Center 1 (SPC 1), the use of RFID is currently being extended to SPC 2, recently built in 2012–2013. First tests with the new technology have provided such good results that the roll-out in late October will optimise delivery processes significantly benefitting overseas customers. Brecht Vanhove, Warehouse Engineer, Scania Parts Logistics in interview with “RFID im Blick”

Start in the SPC 1: RFID and RTLS Scania was involved in a research project at the Flemish Institute for Logistics (VIL) in 2010 looking at how RFID technology could optimise global delivery processes – since then a solution has been successfully implemented. In SPC 1, the Mojix Star RFID RTLS system was installed to monitor the movement of supplies from buildup to proof of shipping. “Since RFID has been deployed in SPC 1, the system is stable and runs to our satisfaction,” says Brecht Vanhove.

Reliably monitoring the movement direction To monitor all transport containers that are transported back and forth between SPC 1 and SPC 2, and to know the exact direction in which parts are moving, Scania management decided to extend the existing RFID system to two loading docks in the SPC 2. Following the recommendations of the system integrator Mieloo & Alexander, the project team from Scania Parts Logistics chose to use a different technology from SPC 1. Since only two dock doors in SPC 2 will be equiped and no RTLS system is needed in this new building, they selected the Kathrein RFID reading systems to make sure that all tagged, reusable transport items (RTI) are reliably detected and their movement direction identified.

“Using RFID we can be almost 100% certain that only parts that have actually been ordered go into the containers for overseas shipment. Therefore, the delivery errors that are most complicated to correct can be avoided and customer satisfaction increased.” Read the complete article at "RFID im Blick" Online. Bespoke vehicle on tap for Dee Valley Water

Llangollen–based AN Richards has cemented its relationship with local water supplier Dee Valley Water by providing a bespoke MAN TGS 26.320 6x4 fitted with HIAB crane, extra storage and crew hygiene facilities. Company secretary Johanna Cooke explained: “We have been working with Dee Valley Water since 2007 after undergoing the tendering process. We maintained all their cars and vans and we have been building our rapport ever since. “We look after their 80-strong fleet and have now signed contracts to provide three vehicles to them on five-year hire contracts. This MAN TGS is a new vehicle and we are delighted to have been able to provide this bespoke service. “Because we know their business needs so well we have been able to provide a bespoke vehicle that accommodates all their equipment securely and safely and also offers a handwashing station for the crew. “The vehicle is used to deal with emergency call outs and will be on call 24/7 365 days a year.” AN Richards is a family-run business, established in the early 1900s, and is a five star-rated MAN Truck & Bus UK franchise.

Leading haulier Eddie Stobart has taken delivery of 25 TGX 26.440 6x2/2 from MAN Truck & Bus UK on a repair and maintenance contract through MAN Finance. And as the finishing touch to the groundbreaking deal for MAN one of the trucks is being named Josie–Mae after MAN managing director Simon Elliott’s eight year old daughter. Mark Price MAN, international key account manager, said: “We are delighted that the TGXs have joined the Eddie Stobart fleet and are proud to see our vehicles on the road bearing that distinctive and much admired livery. “It is a wonderful gesture for the firm to name one of the trucks Josie-Mae, after Simon’s daughter too. “At MAN we are confident the vehicles will prove themselves on their reliability and efficiency over the coming months, and look forward to doing more business in the future. Simon added: “I am pleased the TGXs are now part of the Eddie Stobart family and it was a wonderful gesture to allow Josie’s name to appear on the front of one. “She is so excited to see it, and I am sure Josie and her brother, Cameron, will be keeping their eyes peeled to spot

Heavyweight MAN boasts more muscle with D38 engine

Specialists in heavy and abnormal load logistics McIntosh Heavy Logistics, part of McIntosh Plant Hire group has invested in the MAN tractor unit to complement its work within the oil and gas industry. Directors of the Aberdeen-based firm, Bert and Gary McIntosh, explained: “The vehicle will largely be put to work under the McIntosh Heavy Logistics arm of the business. “It will be kept very busy hauling loads for our contracts for the energy industry, moving machinery and parts for the wind farms and a lot of work on the quayside for the offshore energy firms. “The extra torque offered by the D38 will allow us to shift loads of around 230 to 250 tonnes, so we will be putting it through its paces and keeping it busy with loads of over 100 tonnes on a regular basis. “We have MANs in our current fleet, but this is the first one with the new engine and we are looking forward to watching it prove itself. The marques offering these specialist vehicles are limited, but we felt MAN was the best for us.” Roger Turnbull, MAN sales territory manager, said: “We are delighted to have supplied the first UK MAN TGX 41.640 with the D38 engine to McIntosh Plant Hire in Echt. The sale was completed after careful consideration of the customer’s requirements. “The MAN fulfilled the rigorous duty schedule and was clearly considered the best vehicle for the job.” John Donnelly, MAN’s UK heavy haulage specialist added: “If there is a wider, heavier or higher load that needs transporting MAN heavy-duty tractors are the perfect solution for these types of operation. “Challenges are not only set by the demands of special transportation and to offer increased performance, but by the need to reduce costs. “Businesses are striving to be more efficient and MAN can be counted on to help deliver optimum profitability and reliability. In addition to the numerous ex-works customisations for special load transportation MAN provides the four axle Euro 6 tractor unit in which the high revolution, D38 six-cylinder in-line engine delivers reliable power and performance. “Our vehicles for special transport are subjected to strict testing requirements and fulfil the same quality control requirements as those for all HGVs from MAN. All the required equipment, fixtures and fittings for special transport are available ex-works – meaning there is no need for special production, just the same service conditions as those for largescale serial production.” McIntosh Plant Hire is a family-run business and incorporates McIntosh Heavy Logistics, a division which is recognised for its expertise in the movement of heavy and abnormal loads on a UK basis. The development of the 63-acre site, 10 miles west of Aberdeen, allied to the modern fleet of specialist low loaders has moved McIntosh Heavy Logistics on from originally taking care of the in-house movements for McIntosh Plant Hire earthmoving equipment, to a business responsible for the transportation of equipment for many major companies within the global energy sector. Dylan’s Monster Road Run Charity Drive On February 27th, 2016, Tougher’s Bar & Restaurant in Carlow will be the venue for a Monster Road Run Charity Drive for a brave young man called Dylan Steele, who has a rare life-threatening muscle-wasting disease for which there is no cure. We are urging you to go along and support this young man on the day he turns eleven years old.

R

egistration starts at 10am and the run will commence at 12 noon. Trade stands are welcome and registration on the day will cost just €20 per vehicle. There will be live music provided by a trad band and DJ as well as a raffle and other surprises on the day. It has all the makings of a great family day out. Paula Burke Steele and her husband Liam are doting parents to Dylan and his eight-yearold sister, Kerri. “We were mum and dad to a beautiful blond-haired little boy and an equally beautiful blonde-haired little girl,” Paula says. “We didn’t have much but yet we felt like the richest people in the world because we were so extremely happy with our perfect little family. Life was hectic with two small children but we counted our blessings every single day. “Dylan grew into a typical boy, walking and talking and climbing everything possible and was always great playing with his little sister, Kerri. Everything seemed and felt great.” Without warning, everything changed. “Dylan kept falling over and went from being really steady on his feet to walking with an unusual gait, or waddle, as they called it. When he walked now, it was with his back arched backwards and his stomach kind of out more forward than normal.” He kept falling over and had an unusual way of getting back up. It seemed to take ages. “Still thinking nothing much was wrong, we decided for peace of mind to bring him to our local GP to have him checked over. He was given a thorough check-up and the doctor seemed to think he was just a bit chubby and a bit clumsy. But he took bloods as a precautionary measure.” Paula left the doctor’s feeling somewhat reassured but – like any parent – still with a niggly feeling that something wasn’t right… That day went as usual: kids playing, dinner, baths, bed, the normal routine. “But as soon as the kids were asleep I went on the computer and typed Dylan’s symptoms into Google and, although a million different things popped up, one in particular just jumped out from the screen at me and described Dylan down to a tee. It was like reading about my perfect little son on the computer and there

28

and then I knew in my heart and soul that Dylan had Duchene muscular dystrophy – a rare life-threatening muscle-wasting disease for which there is no cure.” It’s a very progressive and debilitating disease which affects every muscle in the body. “I remember calling Liam and showing him the screen. But he told me not to be worrying myself unnecessarily. However, I knew that no matter what he said I was right. Our blond, perfect little man had DMD.” Paula trawled the internet for days and nights on end hoping to find something to tell her she was wrong – but to no avail. Trying to put everything out of their minds, the family decided to travel to Castlecomer Discovery Park for a picnic by the river. “We packed up and set off and the weather was glorious,” she recalls. “We reached the park and the kids went off down the path to the picnic tables. We propped them up side by side on the benches and just as I was unpacking the picnic bag my phone started ringing and – call it mother’s instinct or whatever – I knew it was the doctor before I picked up the phone and looked at it. “I answered with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat and as the doctor spoke it felt like the life was draining out of me. He explained that the blood results came back extremely high in a certain area and that we needed to bring Dylan up to Crumlin the following week to see a consultant neurologist. After the conversation ended, I dropped to my knees, looked at Liam and shook my head and bawled my eyes out. Dylan looked at me and said ‘what’s wrong, mammy?’ and I had to lie to him and tell him I had a really bad headache.” The following days passed in a blur. In Crumlin, the neurologist broke the news that

Dylan did have Duchene muscular dystrophy. Things moved quickly. The child was booked in for a muscle biopsy and a skin biopsy and these came back positive. “I could go on forever about how devastating it is to watch your child lose all the abilities he already had – like walking and climbing etc. – but there are no words strong enough to convey how hard it is. Dylan stopped walking completely on his First Holy Communion Day and has been completely wheelchair-bound since.” He relies on his family for everything and is now losing muscle strength in his upper body, which is devastating beyond belief. Despite everything Dylan has had to endure – with endless physio, occupational therapy, hospital appointments etc. – he remains the happiest little man ever, always with a smile on his dimply face, never complaining. “He is my beacon of hope and strength and courage and bravery. He is our beautiful son, our gift and - above all - our hero.” As Dylan grows, he will continue to get weaker and will lose everything that we all take for granted on a daily basis. “He is mad into cars, rally carts, lorries, motorbikes, tractors etc. and I promised him the day he was diagnosed that I would stop at nothing to make sure all his hopes and dreams come true, so I have undertaken to hold a special fund-raising day with every vehicle possible to take part in a special road run on Saturday, February 27th, 2016 – the day our hero turns eleven. “It takes place in Tougher’s Bar & Restaurant in Carlow and registration is €20 per vehicle.” All money raised will go directly to Dylan to purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle so that he can be transported comfortably to and from his many appointments. Dylan’s proud mum concludes: “All support so far is greatly appreciated and I thank you all wholeheartedly for not only making my son’s dream come true but also for your amazing generosity.” For more info, contact Paula Burke Steele @ 085 8153442 or 059 8650442, or use Facebook to get all the latest news and updates on the event: Dylan’s Monster Road Run Charity Drive.

Doran’s had previously held the LDV dealership before the much-loved British manufacture disbanded in 2009. But now, following its acquisition by Chinese industrial giant SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation), the iconic brand has been revived and is set to once again become a familiar sight on the roads of Ireland and around the world. “We sold a lot of LDVs around 2006 and ’07. The Maxus, which was popular at the time, has been replaced by a new range of V80 vans. There is a very strong company over LDV now and the vans are as reliable and economical as ever. They have a VM engine and we’ve been getting plenty of enquiries,” Peter explains. The V80 is available in three different sizes – the 3.2 tonne Low Roof Short Wheel Base, the 3.5 tonne Medium Roof Long Wheel Base and the 3.5 tonne High Roof Long Wheel Base. The VM Eco-D 2.5 engine powers the LDV V80. It’s highly regarded reputation has made this engine standard equipment in many international vehicle brands around the world, making it a solid choice for the LDV V80. Fresh trucks ensure that customers receive an unrivalled service

Gerard and Kathleen oversee a fleet of 25 immaculate trucks

From their well-appointed base in the midlands, Lynn International offers a comprehensive range of national and international transport services, operating a modern fleet of tractor units and trailers. With a superb range of walking floors, tippers, fridges, flatbeds, boxes, curtainsiders and tanks at their disposal, they are superbly placed to deliver full and part loads to and from destinations throughout the continent. Husband-and-wife team Gerard and Kathleen Lynn have built the business up diligently over the years on the back of providing an unrivalled professional service, with a fresh fleet of vehicles and experienced personnel combining to guarantee prompt and dependable solutions every time. Reflecting on the genesis of the successful family-run business some 20 years ago, Kathleen notes: “Gerard had worked as a truck driver and he decided to set up on his own. He started off with one truck, providing a nationwide groupage service, and built the business up gradually. The fleet has grown exponentially to the point where Gerard and Kathleen now oversee a fleet of 25 trucks - mainly Scanias as well as a few Volvos and Renaults. Continuous investment ensures that the fleet remains fresh and modern, performing at optimal capacity. To this end, brand-new 142-reg Scanias (R620 and R560) were added to the fleet last year, while a 152-reg Renault T Cab was also acquired this IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

year. With their own fullyequipped, modern workshop in Mullingar – complemented by a state-of-the-art, floodlit concrete yard Lynn International carry out their own preventative maintenance and servicing inhouse, resulting in a finelytuned fleet that delivers the goods, on time every time! Regarding the vast range of services provided, Gerard explains: “We transport literally anything and everything. Up to half of the work is on the continent, including Germany, Belgium, Holland, the UK, Spain, Poland and Denmark, but we also do a lot of work here in Ireland, including animal feed / grain for Aurivo, peat, and groceries for LIDL. We offer a varied range of services and have the equipment to be able to do that.” The service provided is so reliable that Lynn International benefits from a great deal of repeat business. “It’s all repeat work,” Gerard confirms. “We’re working mainly on long-term contracts, which are renewed every year. Our customers are looking for a good service and that’s what we provide. We have the equipment and the personnel and the knowhow to meet their needs and they seem to be happy with that.

The twins are ready to go

“Our staff are excellent and, as well as being very experienced, they are all trained to our liking to perform their tasks in the manner that our customers would expect. We realise that in this line of work, you are only as good as your last job, so we make sure that every job we do is treated as a priority.” Completely customer-focused, Lynn International provides cost-effective, high-quality services and it is this professional ethos that has enabled Gerard and Kathleen to develop the business over the past two decades, even when the economy entered extremely challenging times. Looking to the future, Gerard promises that there will be no let-up in the exacting high s t a n d a r d s implement across the board: “We may expand a little bit more if that is feasible, but we will focus mostly on consolidating the business that we already have and looking after our existing customers.” Considering that they are generating so much

47

lynn international designed_Layout 1 27/01/2016 15:45 Page 5

employment and making such a valuable contribution to the local economy, Lynn International should surely receive more recognition, appreciation and support from the State? “There’s not enough support for hauliers,” Kathleen agrees. “We have huge overheads and you get nothing back except the occasional token gesture. They give with one hand and then take it back with the other. Tax and diesel come down from ridiculous highs and at the same time insurance goes up, so you’re never really any better off.”

A professional service is provided by experienced personnel using modern vehicles

A familiar sight on the roads of Ireland, the UK and Europe

The vision, dedication and hard work of Gerard Lynn have been instrumental in the success of the business since its inception in the mid-1990s. “You have to be prepared to put in long hours,” concludes Gerard, who was just about to go out on the road when we visited Mullingar. “You’re on call 24/7 – you have to be in order to give your customers the best possible service. Nobody appreciates the truck owner for the time and effort he invests. But that person is a professional and if he’s not around then there’s no bread on the shelf and no milk in the fridge.” That’s a scary thought. But as long as operators like Lynn International are around, the wheels will keep on turning. Literally. STAS DEALER FOR IRELAND & NORTHERN IRELAND

Dundalk and Dublin, with a vast range of cutting-edge equipment and tools to provide optimal fault-finding and repair solutions on coaches and trucks, Louth Commercials employ a team of experienced mechanics / technicians who are City & Guild / Fetac qualified. To ensure a complete one-stop-shop under one roof, a fully-compliant spray booth has the capacity to paint all types and sizes of buses and commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, an around-the-clock mobile call-out service specialises in mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems. Highly-regarded in the industry as an independent repair centre for HGVs and PSVs for 35 years, Louth Commercials have been undertaking work for Bus Eireann / Dublin Bus / CIE for most of this time, having carried out regular maintenance on both school and service fleet vehicles and currently maintaining a portion of the school bus fleet in the Dundalk, Drogheda and Cavan areas as part of the existing school bus maintenance contract. In addition to mechanical maintenance, they also carry out body repairs, accident damage and re-finishing work for both public and private operators. Paul Mullen is co-owner and director of the family business which was established in 1980 by his parents, Frank and Rosaleen Mullen. Regarding the genesis and early years of the company, he reveals: “It started off centred around repairs and breaking vehicles for parts. We also operated a transport company at that time. “Indeed, Louth Transport Ltd. is our registered name, as we were a transport company initially. We started doing our own repairs and maintenance and then started to do repairs for others. By the mid-80s, the volume of repairs had overtaken the road haulage. We continued with the haulage up until 1993/94 and then sold that end of the business to our then transport manager. We’ve been concentrating solely on the commercial repairs ever since.” Louth Commercials have the facilities and capacity to carry out literally any work on a coach, bus or commercial vehicle, from general maintenance and repairs to crash repairs, diagnostics, respraying, refurbishments, fitting etc. etc. Skilled personnel play a key role in the success and sheer professionalism of the operation: “All of our technicians would have served their time with us,” says Paul. “For example, Paul Durnin, who runs the Dublin depot, started here as an apprentice in 1987/88 and has been with us ever since, bar a year in Australia. A number of our mechanics also served their time here. “We have brought in dedicated HGV specialists who are ex DAF and Mercedes guys and others who worked previously

50

in the agri end with McGees in Ardee.” Between the two workshops, employment is generated for a team of 26, plus the directors. “The auto electricians and the guys who specialise in crash repairs can be transferred between the two depots as and when required.” The fact that Louth Commercials boast a long-running partnership with Ireland’s largest internal transport company speaks for itself. “We have been working for CIE since the early ‘80s and that work has continued with Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus,” Paul confirms. “This work is the backbone of our business and we’re very proud to be associated with them. “We maintain a section of Bus Eireann’s school fleet as well as a crash repairs, bodywork, respraying programme. We also implement an underbody corrosion protection programme, a refurbishment programme and carry out modifications to buses. “For Dublin Bus, one of our main contracts is the vehicle

Looking to the future, Paul Mullen promises that Louth Commercials will continue to deliver the high-quality services for which they are renowned. “We’ll keep doing what we do best,” he concludes. “We have a couple of irons in the fire regarding expansion and the future development of the company, which could see us diversify further. We’ll see how that goes. “Our staff have played a massive role in the success of the business. Key staff and good people are very important and we’ve been lucky in that we have been able to delegate accordingly. worked for himself in Dublin for a number of years doing mobile repairs. But he wanted to move back this way and we also felt there was a niche for a commercial vehicle repair and service centre locally, so we built the unit here and it has gone very well.” Indeed, despite the economic downturn that swept through the economy not long after the business was formed, McGlynn Commercial Repairs has thrived since its inception, its popularity spearheaded by the provision of a high-quality, thoroughly-professional service. “We’ve managed to maintain our staff levels and we’re delighted about that,” Teresa confirms. “Ironically, during the downturn, when money and finance were tight and not many new vehicles were being sold, a lot more people were getting repairs and maintenance done to existing vehicles, and that worked in our favour.” By keeping clients’ fleets in top nick, McGlynn Commercial Repairs offered

customers economies and efficiencies that boasted their competitiveness. That continues to be the case today as a welltuned commercial vehicle remains vitally important in the transportation and service sectors. McGlynns pride themselves on their ability to provide swift and accurate troubleshooting. “We specialise in diagnostics for the full range of HGVs and trailers, LCVs, coaches and buses,” says Teresa. “We have the most up-todate diagnostic equipment here as well as personnel who are fully trained in how to operate it. This equipment is fully mobile so we can take it out on-site and it’s invaluable as it points you in the right direction every time – be it faults with ABS, engines, gearboxes, air conditioning etc. – and it also saves time and reduces labour costs. “Tail-lift repairs is one of our many specialties. Nine out of every ten breakdown repairs that we do in the mornings are tail-lift related. We stock a

lot of parts for these and make up our own hydraulic hoses and pipes on-site.” A 24/7 mobile call-out service is provided. “We have one large mobile service van plus two smaller ones and we will cover literally anywhere. Most of the call-outs are in the Longford, Mullingar, Athlone, Roscommon area but if we have a customer in trouble in Dublin or Donegal, we will sort them out. We have a lot of trusted contacts nationwide and we work hand in hand with them to ensure that nobody is stuck.” A business of this scope and professionalism requires continuous investment. “We’ve just purchased the building next door and have extended into that, adding two extra pits and bringing the total workshop up to four pits,” Teresa relates. “When the opportunity came up to acquire that building, we took it and we’ve put in a lot of new equipment. “But the equipment would be worthless without the right people to operate it. daunting task many may feel, but with the expertise and guile that Electric Skyline possess, there is no better company equipped to carry out this contract to the highest standard possible. The five-year contract will see the company look after the maintenance of the street lighting, which sounds an almost impossible task, but managing director Sean Corcoran revealed how they operate. “We have two guys with designated

regions driving around the towns and assessing the public street lights. If there is a fault or a light not working, they record that in the system and it is then assigned to maintenance crews who go out and fix the issue as soon as possible,” said Sean. “We are contracted to look after the management and maintenance of the street lighting, while there is also a massive emphasis on energy saving. We are currently looking at a number of different ways of implementing this. Electric Skyline are not new to this kind of work as they have held a contract for five of the local authorities in the past. “This tender is a huge boost to our business and it shows a vote of confidence in our team and what we do. Winning this tender which includes Galway City, brings the total number of local authority contracts we manage to eight.” Sean added that the five-year contract safeguards the future of the business for that period of time at the very least. “This will secure the jobs of 25 staff here in the west and we expect it to lead to the creation of an additional five jobs over the next five years. “It is also a major boost to the local economy, as all our staff are based in the region.” Electric Skyline are not solely reliant on this contract as they have a number of ongoing projects at present that cover a wide range of sectors including sports lighting, internal lighting, lighting design and school warning lights. and are very proud of the fact that we have had no lost time accidents since the formation of the company in 2007. “We invest a lot of resources in Health & Safety and have our own full time Health & Safety Officer ensuring all staff have everything in place to carry out the works safely” Sean added “in 2014 we were accredited with ISO 9001 ISOH 14001 and OHSAS 18001, very few in our industry have this level of accreditation. The company was formed in 2007 by Sean and his partners Brendan Reilly and Bryan Fox and over the last nine years, they have gone from strength to strength. Energy efficiency is a key part of the business as more and more emphasis is placed on protecting the environment and also keeping costs down. “Electric Skyline are aware that the world we live in is ever changing and that we have a responsibility to improve energy usage for our various lighting requirements. For business or Local Authorities lighting is the easiest way of reducing energy and the changing to LED improves the illumination of the particular areas.50% savings can be achieved by gathering the correct information and carrying out lighting design. Through their roads departments, they ensure that the requisite infrastructures are in place to facilitate the safe and economical movement of vehicles - and goods – from A to B. To this end, Waterford already boasts some of the best planned, best built and best maintained roads in the country. This will continue to be the case. Waterford City & County Council performs a vital role in ensuring that the transport infrastructure in the county is up to scratch all year around. While their work takes place behind the scenes and is taken completely for granted by the public at large, it is absolutely vital for the continued safety and economic viability of the region. These are tough financial times for everybody but the new umbrella council is doing everything in its power to ensure that the roads network in the county remains amongst the very best in the country. Despite the obvious financial restrains hindering them, they are doing an excellent job.

End of life vehicles are properly disposed of in Waterford

transportation of people and goods by road, which is in turn an important driver in facilitating the ongoing economic development of the county (as well as maximising the safety of all users of the roads network – motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike). Conditions were ideal for a seamless transition. Even prior to merging, Waterford County and City Councils had frequently worked together in harmony, no more so than on roads projects. One of the most significant of these was the N52 Waterford city bypass scheme – which ranks amongst the most significant pieces of road infrastructure ever to be built in Waterford. A collaborative effort between Waterford Co Co, Waterford City County, Kilkenny Co Co IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

and the NRA, construction began on the city bypass in April 2006 and it was opened to the public during October, 2009, forming part of the North / South Strategic Corridor, which runs from Belfast to Cork. Stretching from west of Kilmeaden to east of Slieverue, it comprises 23km of dual carriageway, 16km of single carriageway, two grade separated junctions, 60 structures, a toll plaza and the 465 cable stayed River Suir Bridge. All told, Waterford City & County Council is doing an excellent job in managing the affairs of the county, overseeing services in a number of critical areas, of which the roads service section is vital. When it comes to the most vital function of the transportation sector – i.e. keeping things moving - local authorities have a huge role to play behind the scenes.

î “ere are so many issues to deal with in the haulage industry on a daily basis that anyone outside and never involved in the industry would beg to ask the question why bother?

ut for those that are involved, the majority possess a common trait which is that it is in their blood as many of the more successful haulage operators are family run businesses that have been on the go for at least one generation. Many would say that you would want to be mad to work with family and obviously it brings its own problems on occasions, but in the main, the one type of person that you can always rely on is indeed family. in this month’s edition of Irish Trucker as RJ McNabney t/a McNabney Bros owner as Robert McNabney speaks to us about the services that they provide. The success of any company can be gauged on one part by its longevity as businesses struggle for survival is a continuous factor. This is especially true when a recession hits and Ireland is slowly emerging from the latest economic setback that has hit the country with such ferocity that no one was left untouched. Unfortunately for some businesses, the

roar of the Celtic Tiger has long passed and many have been forced to close their doors, but for the ones that have survived, it is no surprise that they have been in business for many years as experience is vital in these incidents. A lot of companies experienced the same economic turmoil in the eighties when a lack of work forced hundreds of thousands to emigrate, but through hard work and dedication, some businesses have continued to not only survive but thrive. From humble beginnings, Robert has

built up the business into what it is today. “I started off doing a bit of agricultural contracting and that is something we still do today. When I first started out, I bought two tractors, one of which had no engine, so I had to go about building them and then started working. “In 1983, I started in the haulage work and I got a lucky break when I went to London to buy a Mercedes truck which had a concrete bottle on it. I intended taking that off but got some work with Readymix and it just took off from there. “We specialise in tipper work and bulk tanker work. With the tipper work, we would do a lot of work for quarries in the area, while the bulk tanker is where we have six concrete mixers working for CES Quarry Products and its sister company Alpha Quarry Products Ltd,” said Robert.

As stated RJ McNabney is very much a family affair as wife Alix looks after the administration side of the business, while sons Robin and Roger are involved in the day to day running of the business. There are many trials and tribulations attached to the haulage industry and it is one of, if not the toughest sector to be involved in. This has especially been the case in recent years as the current economic recession has seen a dip in rates, while expenditure has increased considerably. “We’ve always tried to keep the overheads down and we’ve managed to grow every year. We are fortunate with the customer base that we have. We are there to provide them with the best service possible and once we continue to do that then we should be ok.” Robert admits that without their customers, the

“We are definitely taking a more cautious approach to work these days. We are much stronger, having come through rough times." Robert was delighted when one of his drivers was voted the Tipper Driver of the Year at the Plant & Civil Engineering awards. “Thomas deserved the award, not only is he a great driver, but he is multi-talented and can turn his hand to anything. He has no problem working on in the evening if a job needs to be done and he is an integral part of the business.”

We have a good working relationship with them and we know the service that they expect and it is up to us to make all the Best Wishes for the future- Robert McNabney deliveries on time. From The TEAM at TBF THOMPSON “We also have good drivers and a lot of them have been with us for years as well. They are very competent at what they do and it’s great to know that will do the job to the best of their capabilities.” Robert added that they take great pride in their fleet also as it is kept up to date and well maintained. “The trucks are kept in excellent condition as there is no room for downtime in this game. Scania is the preferred choice of truck and we recently purchased a new one from Roadtrucks. There are huge time constraints in this industry and everything is against the clock, so it is essential that the fleet is always in good order." Experience is vital in the industry and to that end, Robert and his team have this commodity in abundance. “Given the fact that we have been through a few recessions at this stage helps us cope, but certainly the last few years have been tough. “We’re happy with the direction that the company is heading. We’re busy all year round and we’re delighted to be working for the companies that we are. Our aim is continue to provide the service that they expect for many years to come.

This tops off what has been an excellent year for Creagh.” Undoubtedly, the team work has been a theme which has been carried through at the Brackagh Quarry since 1992 and is the reason it has been successful in its production over the last 23 years. Across the Channel, Creagh has set up bases in Hoveringham in England and in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. As aforementioned, Colm operates from the Brackagh Quarry, where a sturdy supply of product runs through smoothly each day to ensure that demands are met. At present, a project to erect three new wind turbines at the Brackagh Quarry is on-going with the ultimate goal being to make its quarries more efficient, with plans to have these completed by early autumn. ere are many different areas in the haulage sector with most hauliers concentrating on one or two sections of expertise.

ow loader work is a specialised form of haulage that usually sees hauliers moving large machinery or plant from one place to another. This type of work takes great care as the loads being carried cost massive amounts of money and customers must place a certain trust in the haulier. To earn this trust, a haulage company must gather plenty of experience, but to do so they need to get a break so to speak. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile a company that got such a break as Crossmaglen, Co Armagh based Conlon Low Loader Haulage managing director Michael Conlon speaks to us about how he went from being an electrician to owning and running a successful haulage company. "I served my time as an electrician, but have always had a hankering to go driving and so in the mid-nineties, I got my haulage licence and starting driving on the continent," said Michael.

"I worked for a few different companies and gathered a lot of experience during that time before I decided to start my own business, which I set up in 1999." Michael revealed that he and his wife Ann, who looks after the administration, started off doing some tipper work for a local quarry and this led to him focusing more on low loader work. "The tipper work was going well, but with expansion in mind, we identified an opening in the market for Lowloader hire, we made the necessary investments and everything fell in to place from there." In 2002, Michael purchased a brand new low loader, which was recently refurbished and is sti1l to this day, hauling plant and machinery. "The trailer was bought from Nooteboom in Holland and it certainly has paid for itself over the years. We've added to the fleet since then and I now have three Scanias and a DAF on the road. "We've recently added a new Max Faymonville extendable trailer from

Ashbourne Trailers as our workload increases. There are plenty of overheads to contend with in this industry and that is why it is so important to keep those wheels turning." Conlon Haulage now offers a wide range of services including UK haulage, plant machinery haulage, heavy haulage, Abnormal loads, escort vehicle, with a 24/7 operation. Michael added that one of his most important customers is Gibson Brothers which is one of Ireland’s most recognised family owned businesses operating in the Quarrying/Civil Engineering and Surfacing sectors. The business has grown, diversified and continues to develop in delivering innovative engineering solutions to a host of public and private sector clients. "Gibson Brothers have been very good to us and we are with them since the start. We would move a lot of machinery for them across Northern Ireland. We have an extensive customer base, all of

whom have developed an excellent working relationship with Michael and his team. Heading across the Irish Sea on a regular basis means dealing with ferries a 1ot, but Michael revealed that was all taken care of by ferry freight agent Victor Treacy International. "We would deal- with Victor Treacy all the time. They are very professional down there and always eager to help and we have no problems with them at all. Booking ferries can be stressful at times, but in fairness, the team at Victor Treacy's look after us very we1l." Time constraints are a massive issued in the haulage industry as hauliers are always working against the c1ock, so downtime is something they aI1 strive to avoid. "The majority of the maintenance work

want trucks that standout and we ensure that the trucks are kept as well presented as possible at all times, at the end of the day, the trucks are the face of the company." Michael stressed that the experience that they have gathered over the years has stood them in good stead going forward. "This is not only evident in the length of service we have gained from a substantial number of customers but also from work that has been obtained as a result of referrals from many satisfied customers. The location of our offices means we are within the infrastructure for accessing, Belfast, Dublin and all other areas with ease. David Stephenson started the company in 2012

taring your own business in this country around 2012 took a decent amount of courage, one could certainly argue, but so far as David Stephenson was concerned he was working with a winning formula. Having put his first truck (a Volvo 480) on the road three years previous, David set his sights on expanding his business venture once the workload started to pile up and he hasn’t looked back since, with even further plans for expansion now on the horizon for 2016. The Wicklow native has been involved in timber haulage and haulage in general all his life, so from his perspective it only made sense to go out on his own once the time was right. Stephenson Transport’s director is now four years older and wiser and his company now also supplies sand, aggregates, woodchip, timber shavings, sawdust and sawn timber, whilst also offering a site clearance service. David himself gave us the rundown of the ‘where, when and how many’ behind his current venture. “We’re based in the Glen of Immal, Co Wicklow and we’ve been on the go since 2012,” he explained. “At the moment we have two working here, including myself and the hopes are that we’ll be taking on another member of staff in the near future.” Two trucks and two employees adds up and when you consider the expenses involved behind fuels, tolls etc, it’s little wonder why David is biding his time

before taking the commitment of bringing another staff member on board. So what exactly are the services in which Stephenson Transport in the Glen of Immal provide for its customers? David is straightforward in his response to that one and outlined that there is one company in particular in which he hauls for almost on a daily basis for the past year. “We do timber haulage, general haulage and sell a lot of sawdust and shavings. We would also do a lot of race courses for horses as well,” he said. “A lot of the timber that we haul would be for the Murray Timber Group in Co Carlow – we started working for them the last 12 months or so.” David’s background has undoubtedly led him into his chosen line of work and it’s a line of work which he enjoys most. His father, Herbie Stephenson, had been working in timber haulage and the sand and gravel business all of his life before he tragically passed away in 2001. Following Herbie’s passing, his wife and David’s mother, Ann, took over the business and the experience which David gained through all those years of working alongside his father has been carried through. In many ways, it has come full circle for the Stephenson family as David now looks to run a successful future for many years to come. “My father drew timber and ran a sand and gravel business all his life until he unfortunately passed away in an accident,” David reflected. “So I would

have been driving from a young age and I never really knew anything else but driving and timber work. “I decided to go out on my three or four years ago and things have been going well ever since, so I can’t really complain. Next year (2016) will be about expanding a bit more and trying to get more customers on board.” He added: “We are very busy at the moment. We are trying to expand all the time and we’re travelling all over the country right now. “We haven’t been going over to the UK yet, but maybe that’s something in the pipeline for years to come. David is keeping it local for now, starting with a nearby company that he first started working with when he was a teenager. Now Bill Keogh Sawmills, which was first established in 1960 in the heart of the Glen in the Garden County, is a regular customer of David’s and uses Stephenson Transport for the haulage of its timber products. “Bill Keogh Sawmills is about a mile from my house and I’ve know the people who own the company from a young age,” said David. “I worked for them for three years when I was a teenager and then I saved up enough money to eventually go out and buy my own truck in 2009 and started doing work for them. I still do to this day and there’s a good working relationship there between us.” He added: “When I say I started working

for myself in 2012, it’s not really true because I would have been working with my own truck in 2009 and now I’ve two on the road, with hopes to maybe have another out soon. So there’s definitely progress being made, you could say. Along with Bill Keogh, David’s brother Herbie also gave him an early platform to start working from, providing him with the impetus to start up his own outfit. Sure enough, one truck grew into a fleet of two, with a third now on the way in 2016. For David, Volvo has always been the brand that he trusts most when it came time to purchase a new truck. “I’ve two Volvos on the road at the minute. One is a 460 and the other is a 480,” he explained. “I guess I chose Volvo for the fleet

because it’s a bit of a family Best Wishes To Stephenson Transport, From tradition to have them. You build up trust for them once you’ve been driving them for as Coolmoney, Donard, Co.Wicklow long as I have. I find them T:045-404489/045-404561F:045-404470 economical and very reliable.” Email: keoghsgarage@hotmail.com The Volvo 480 was the second truck he purchased after being impressed by the 460 and it is set to be a hat-trick of the same brand in the New Year, with a FH50 ordered and on the way,” said the Wicklow native. We are proud to announce that we are “I’ve a Volvo FH500 coming in Approved Meritor Driveline Centre for Ireland Large stock of Differentials, Axles, the New Year. Hopefully it will Hub Reduction Parts, Spare Parts etc. help to expand and we’ll be Trade enquiries welcome looking to try and take on a new man as well here in January. “September through March would be our busiest period here, so we’re right in the middle of it at the minute so we could do with another driver alright.” As for the next 12 months, it’s going to be more of the same for S t e p h e n s o n Transport, with perhaps one adjustment. “The hopes for 2016 are to expand and keep going strong like the way we are right now. Hopefully, next year (2016) will For All Your Home & Agri Oil see us expand a bit more and we’ll just Tinahely, Co. Wicklow take it from there,” Tel:0402-38241 | Mobile: 086-8169360 David concluded. company which offers services in road work, road work repairs, fencing, drainage, foot paths, cold milling and stone work. In 2005 the limited company RT Boyd & Co Ltd was created. R T Boyd & Co Ltd has completed work all over the roads of Northern Ireland throughout the last 40 years and, as

Robert outlined, they’re still going strong with plenty to be positive about for 2016. “We’re based here at 80 Lismoyle Road, Swatragh, Maghera, Co Derry,” explained Robert. “We’re established 40 years and would have 20 working here altogether at the moment. I’m still Managing Director and

three of my staff would be family - my son-in-law and two grandsons both work here.” So what is it that Robert and his staff of 20 employees occupy themselves with week in, week out? Robert explained that the bulk of their work is done around the roads of Derry, Antrim and Tyrone. “Our main work would be road maintenance. With three patching squads we can complete in excess of 2000m2 of road patching per week with our Writgen 500 planer and our 3 S570 Bobcat planers. “Generally most of our work would be in Derry, Tyrone and Antrim, but we’d be working all over the place as well. Last year, we did some work in Donegal, so we could be working anywhere within a reasonable enough distance.” With over 40 years of experience, R T Boyd & Co Ltd has grown to become one of the most highly regarded civil engineering firms in the Mid Ulster area. “I actually still do some house building but it’s mostly roads now. Things had been slack for a while there but the downturn around 2008 and 2009 didn’t slow us down all that much. It was more to do with regulations and that, but the money’s coming out of Stormont now so we’re happy to be kept busy.” On the construction end, all of Robert’s employees are qualified by the Federation of Master Builders, the UK’s largest trade association in the building industry, and trained to the highest of standards. As for the drivers, Robert has put huge faith in them down through the years and feels that their reliability has been a core part of the company’s success. “All of our drivers are fully qualified and up to date with regulations. Most of all though, they are reliable and I think that’s what matters most in this business,” he outlined. “Out of the 20 staff that we have here, 17 of them would be drivers and they would all be employed full-time, especially in the busy times.” The impressive fleet at R T Boyd & Co Ltd consists of five MAN trucks, three DAFs, two Ivecos and a Renault, with the latest addition being a DAF 160, which was purchased last January, and Robert hasn’t ruled out the possibility of purchasing more trucks in 2016. “I bought a DAF 160 in March (2015) and we still haven’t taken it out yet,” he laughed. “It should be out now at the start of 2016 and I would have paid £42,500 for it at the start of this year. With things being a bit quite now at the moment, we’re in no panic at the RT Boyd is based in Swatragh, Co Derry moment on taking it

reflects the finest in craftsmanship. In any project, R T Boyd & Co Ltd has always understood the importance of effective communication and working well with the entire team in all aspects of the work. To that end, the foundation of their reputation rests on good management, transparent accounting and attention to detail; these principles are key to creating successful relationships during projects and into the future. The company’s goal is to assist past and present clients with many of the basic tasks that are necessary for the upkeep of the work. In addition, they are available to facilitate any small or large projects that their clients’ future needs require. Indeed things have come a long way since Robert first started the company from a background in the construction industry, which saw him out on sites from the day he finished school. Now the company he started 40 years ago has earned a reputation for “getting the job gone”, according to the man himself. “I served my time as a brick layer when I left school when I was a teenage and would have built houses and put down tarmac before I started this company,” said Robert.

out.” Robert’s priority has always been the customer, rather than making sure that his newest truck is on the road before his competitors, and that, along with many of facets of his business, goes a long way in explaining his company’s long lifespan. “Our main customers would be the DRD and the local Councils and we’d also do a lot of sub- contract work for FP McCann, Patrick Bradley Quarries, H&A Mechanical among others. “I think they choose us first here because we’re fairly reliable for getting the job done, plus we try to do as good a job as possible.” Those are two valuable qualities for any company to

have and with Robert at the helm, you can be sure that they’ll continue to be there for R T Boyd & Co Ltd for years to come. As for 2016, he’s relishing the prospect of another 12 months to continue to improve business and move the company forward in its 41st year. “I’ve always looked forward to the next year,” said the Derry man. “Normally, March would be the busiest time of year for us but we’ve had a good enough year all round. At the moment, we’re doing work for Wright-Bus in Ballymena and hopefully we’ll have more busy times again in 2016.”
