Toyota to exhibit handling innovations at Commercial Vehicle Show Toyota Material Handling UK, which recently became a Gold Member of the Road Haulage Association (RHA), will exhibit at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show. Toyota will use the April 24th-26th show to provide dedicated advice and share its knowledge and experience of materials handling with road haulage members. The 2012 Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC Birmingham will enable Toyota to demonstrate specific trucks and options that are tailored to logistics and transport operations and to provide a range of free safety resources to visitors to its stand. Irish companies expect revenue increases. But...

Most Irish companies expect revenue increases this year, according to a new PricewaterhouseCoopers survey.

However, despite this expectation, over half of Irish businesses remain pessimistic about the prospects of the domestic economy in general. The survey of chief financial officers was undertaken by the professional services firm and 58% of those surveyed said they anticipate growth in revenues at their firms, with 55% saying they expect growth in net profits. A third expect capital investment levels to grow.

34% expect pay levels to increase and 35% expect employee numbers to rise.

Still, 51% said they envisage no change in the outlook for Ireland’s economy only 11% are optimistic about the prospect of economic growth in 2012.

Maintaining margins, controlling the cost base and lack of demand were identified as the main challenges facing Irish firms going forward.

P&O strengthens Dover strait stranglehold P&O Ferries have added a second super ferry to the Dover Strait in order to maintain their grip on the marketshare.

The Spirit of France super-ferry will join sister ship, Spirit of Britain, on the crossing. The two P&O Ferries have added a second super-ferries can super ferry to the Dover Strait each transport up to 160 lorries, double the capacity of other vessels the line has on the crossing. They can also carry 2,000 passengers and 195 cars. Spirit of France will take the fleet P&O Ferries has on the Dover-Calais route to seven, including the freighter European Seaway. However, only six are likely to be in service at any one time. Following the collapse of SeaFrance, P&O Ferries’ only maritime competitor on the straits will be DFDS, which in association with LD Lines will launch a Dover-Calais service on 17 February. A P&O spokesman said: “We don’t underestimate the challenge from DFDS and are more than ready for it. We reckon the quality and flexibility of our programme of 30 round trips daily meets our freight customers’ requirements. We aim to hold on to the new business we picked up when SeaFrance suspended its services.”

FTA Ireland join European Road Safety Charter The Freight Transport Association of Ireland has signed up for the European Road Safety Charter.

The aim of this is to promote safer driving practices among commercial vehicle operators throughout the country. The European Road Safety Charter comprises enterprises, associations, research institutions and public authorities. Aidan Flynn, FTAI’s General Manager Business Services, said: "We are delighted to sign up to the European Road Safety Charter.

FTA Ireland’s goal is to promote operator compliance and, as a consequence, promote road safety issues to our members.

"We will invite all of our accredited members to participate in this initiative, as collectively we can help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads."

Mixed results for Dublin Port Figures released from Dublin Port have revealed that throughput was down 0.1% to 28.1 million tonnes in 2011.

However, exports have continued to grow and increased by 2.8% last year, while imports fell slightly by 2.8% at 16.6 million tonnes.

Eamonn O’Reilly, Dublin Port Company’s Chief Executive Exports continue to grow said: "Trade levels at Dublin at Dublin Port even though Port were steady in 2011 throughput was down which is a robust performance given the large (6.1%) increase in the port’s volumes in the previous year. "Whereas export volumes have continued to grow and are now 0.5m tonnes higher than they were in 2007, the poor performance of the domestic economy has resulted in a continued decline in imports. These are now 3.4m tonnes lower than they were in 2007.

"Notwithstanding the poor performance of the economy we are continuing to plan for the future and will shortly be launching our Masterplan 2012 to 2040. Dublin remains the largest and most important port on the island and our Masterplan is intended to ensure we continue to provide vital port capacity particularly as the economy returns to growth in coming years. "With all the difficulties in the economy we are still only 9% behind where we were at the peak in 2007 and we believe that any pick-up in domestic demand will quickly translate into growth in import volumes. The Masterplan will ensure we stay ahead of future growth in demand for decades to come."

Irish winners among 2012 business environment awards announced Three Irish companies, all of who have connections with the haulage industry have been successful at the 2012 business environment awards. Larkin Engineering in Galway won the European Product award for applying eco-design and waste minimisation principles to its 120 Litre Jumbo bin, which has reduced the resources and materials consumed per bin manufactured.

Irish Cement - winner of the IBEC Environmental Excellence Aard Energy savings per bin produced is equivalent to the amount used to travel 520km in an average family car. Roadstone Wood in West Dublin received the European Process award for reviewing existing pumping arrangements in their quarry and consequently achieving significant savings in electricity consumption and reducing their carbon footprint. Irish Cement in Louth received the IBEC Environmental Excellence award for substituting a portion of its fossil fuel usage with renewable energy derived from solid recovered fuel, significantly reducing the company’s carbon footprint and improving the sustainability of the cement manufacturing process. Announcing the winners, IBEC Director of Policy Brendan Butler said: "These awards provide an opportunity to showcase the best of Irish innovation in environmental management and practice. The number and quality of Irish entries this year reflect the increasing importance of environmental issues for businesses of all types and sizes."

Minister turns sod on N4 section Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar was in Mullingar on Tuesday 7th February to turn the sod on a section of the N4 dual carriageway. This is a modest piece of work that is being carried out and was a far cry from the days when former Transport Minister Noel Dempsey was unveiling motorways and dual carriageways all over the country. And although Varadkar admitted that expenditure on road projects had been severely cut back, he stressed that some developments would go ahead. "Our ability to invest in roads is going to be rather constrained for the next number of years, but this event does show that some progress can still be made," he declared. "There'll be three small NRA projects this year," he said, adding that, subject to all sorts of financial caveats, some motorway construction might commence.”

IRHA and Finance Minister to discuss issues Minister for Finance Michael Noonan will sit down with Irish Road Haulage Association members tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss this year’s budget plans.

The IRHA are looking for a fuel rebate to be introduced in order to ease the financial burden on hauliers and they are also seeking the abolishment of green diesel as they feel it is increasing fuel laundering, which has become a major problem.

President of the Association Eoin Gavin stated: “We are one of the few representative groups who are not looking for a hand-out from the Department of Finance. Our extensive research on our proposals has clearly demonstrated that there are substantial gains for Government available but we are dismayed by the failure of the Department to act.

“The price of our raw material (diesel) has reached an unsustainable level, with six large haulage companies gone out of business in the last week alone. The haulage industry in Ireland, which is crucial to our export led economic recovery, urgently needs engagement from Government in order to maintain the level of service which is currently provided.”

Haulage protest imminent The threat of a mass haulage protest later this month looks set to be carried out after recent talks between the IRHA and the Oireachtas failed to reach a conclusion. Fuel prices and laundered fuel were the main topic of conversation on the agenda and IRHA president Eoin Gavin admitted that the protest was now a distinct possibility. “There appears to be no other option but to proceed with our proposed protest action in order to draw public attention to the Government’s willingness to fuel criminality and the resultant decimation of the haulage industry in Ireland,” he said. The haulage industry has suffered greatly over the past 24 months and their plight seems to be falling on deaf ears, but it is hoped that the protest will see the relevant government bodies sit up and take notice.

Hauliers look set for protest action

Caffrey International Signs Telecommunications Contract with O2 for Fixed as well as Mobile - Freight firm reduces fixed line costs by up to 25% Caffrey International, the Irish owned European freight transport and logistics specialist, headquartered in Ashbourne, Co Meath, has signed a telecommunications contract with O2. As a result of the deal, Caffrey, winner of the 2011 Logistics Company of the Year Award from the Irish Exporters' Association, has been able to reduce the cost of its fixed line communications by up to 25%.

The agreement sees O2 now providing Caffrey's full telecommunications needs across fixed line as well as mobile.

Caffrey, which employs over 100 people, operates a fleet of more than 65 trucks and 125 trailers. It provides transport, warehousing and distribution services covering Ireland, the UK and continental Europe for both ambient and perishable cargo.

"Rising fuel and other charges means we constantly need to Caffrey International have signed a telecommunications contract with O2 look at our cost base so as to maximise our service to customers of all sizes," comments Mark Caffrey, General Manager, Caffrey International. "In addition, we needed a provider that can provide a reliable mobile and fixed voice network, not only in Ireland but across the continent of Europe."

BP profits on the rise BP reported that net profits hit $23.9 billion (€18.2 billion) in 2011 following a loss the previous year when the British energy giant was ravaged by US Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster. It suffered a loss of $4.9 billion in 2010 when an explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 workers, caused millions of barrels of oil to spew into the sea and left the company with huge compensation costs.

The company signalled a further step in its recovery today by hiking its payout for shareholders for the first time since the Gulf of Mexico spill. Chief executive Bob Dudley said the oil giant, which accounts for one pound in every six invested by UK pension schemes, remained on the "right path" as he unveiled a 14% increase in the company's dividend to 5.1 pence a share. Meanwhile, the group said that, as of December 31, it had paid out $7.5 billion for individual, business and government claims since the incident, as it prepares to go on trial at the end of this month. "As I have said before, we are prepared to settle if we can do so on fair and reasonable terms, but equally, if this is not possible, we are preparing vigorously for trial," Mr Dudley said.

Ford’s hands-free parallel parking aid is a hit 100,000 times over; production tripled to meet demand · More than 100,000 customers have placed orders for Active Park Assist, which helps drivers parallel park with the touch of a button and without ever touching the steering wheel · Ford has increased production threefold to meet demand for the ultrasonic-based sensing system found on Focus, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX If proof was needed that parallel parking drives motorists to distraction, then more than 100,000 orders for Ford’s Active Park Assist feature makes the point loud and clear.

Ford has now tripled production levels for the technology, which calculates the optimal steering angle and quickly steers the vehicle hands free into a parking spot.

“Ford Active Park Assist takes all the stress out of parking,” said Ford engineer Kay Müller. “At the touch of a button, it enables you to park in the smallest of spaces, while at the same time reducing the risk of accidental damage to your vehicle and those surrounding it.”

A total of 102,460 European customers have specified Active Park Assist since it was introduced on the new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX at the end of 2010, with one-in-three buyers specifying it on those cars alone. A further one-in-five have ordered it on the new Ford Focus, which went on sale last year.

A third of European drivers surveyed by Ford last year said they struggled to parallel park. Many confessed to finding it more stressful than a trip to the dentist.

Active Park Assist – how it works · The driver activates the system by pressing a button, which activates the ultrasonic sensors to measure and identify a feasible parallel parking space · The system then prompts the driver to accept the system assistance to park · The system then takes over and steers the car into the parking space hands-free. The driver still operates the gears and the accelerator and brake pedals · A visual and/or audible interface advises the driver about the proximity of other cars, objects and people and provides instructions. · While the steering is all done automatically, the driver remains responsible for safe parking and can interrupt the system by grasping the steering wheel

Speed limits to be audited The Department of Transport has announced plans for a nationwide audit of speed limits to ensure that all speed restrictions are both safe and sensible.

The Minister’s Department will shortly engage with the National Roads Authority and local authorities to conduct a nationwide audit of speed limits across Ireland. Speed limit bands are set by the Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport. However, specific limits applied on particular roads are determined by the local authorities, in consultation with the Gardaí and in respect of national primary and secondary roads with the National Roads Authority. The aim of the audit is to start overhauling the inconsistencies between different counties and regions, and put an end to confusion among drivers. Although the process is expected to take some time, the audit will be a crucial first step.

The NRA and local authorities will be asked to conduct the audit in consultation with the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. However, the Minister also encouraged members of the public to highlight their concerns with their own local authority. Speaking at the sod turning on two road schemes in Co. Westmeath: the N4 Downs Grade Road Separation, and the N52 Carrick Bridge to Clonfad Road Improvement Scheme Minister Varadkar said: “Recent road safety measures like speed cameras and new drink driving laws have gone a long way towards improving road safety. However, we need to ensure that the right speed limits are in operation on the right roads. “We all know of cases where speed limits are inappropriately low or inappropriately high. I understand that there is some confusion among drivers about the various speed limits which should and do apply, as well as the approach to speed limit signage on national, regional and local roads. “There are also allegations that local authorities are not consistent in how they decide on the appropriate speed limit, which has also contributed to driver confusion. Last year a new set of guidelines for special speed limits was published. This audit will follow on from that publication.”

Volvo Trucks’ Driver Challenge 2012 gets underway

The Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2012 got underway on February 6th. The event, which takes place over a five-month period, measures and assesses individual driver’s techniques.

These techniques are the basis for a professional driver to achieve optimum fuel economy and uptime from their vehicle. A major difference for this year's event is the use of FM instead of FH tractor units. Fleet size has also been increased from five to six. Moving to FM tractor units means that it has been possible to specify the high torque, driver-friendly and fuel-efficient D11C 11-litre engine, in this case, at its top power rating of 450hp.

Around 120 drivers are expected to take part in the competition this year and operator interest is already high. According to Volvo Trucks' Managing Director Göran Nyberg. the Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2012's focus on driver technique is crucial to delivering much more than excellent fuel economy: "Using driving techniques that improve fuel consumption also results in vehicles having less impact on the environment as well as potentially reducing operating costs in terms of unscheduled maintenance and repairs. That uptime can be optimised and even improved by using driving techniques that deliver improved fuel economy is an established fact. Utilising good driver techniques is incontrovertibly good for our customers, their customers and drivers of our vehicles." Drivers at participating operators will use one of the identically specified and equipped FM-450s with their company's own trailers, on their normal duties and at the running weights dictated by their delivery schedules. Because of the huge number of variables in the circumstances in which the trucks will operate, fuel economy itself will not be scored during the initial round of the Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2012 competition. Each driver taking part will be scored against fifteen driving techniques recorded by the vehicles' Dynafleet telematics systems. These included coasting, engine load, time spent in top gear and engine idling.

Renault Trucks strengthens its market place Renault Trucks has reiterated its desire to work ever more closely with its customers through an increasingly dense coverage of geographical areas. Over recent months, more than 20 new sales and service outlets have opened in Europe (Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Spain, Italy).

Renault have opened more than 20 new Renault Trucks also intends to sales and service outlets throughout increase its presence in Africa Europe over the recent months (Algeria, Angola), the Middle East (Iraq), Asia (Lebanon) and Latin America (Peru). In Germany, Renault Trucks has densified its network since the summer of 2011, with four new service partners. In the south of the country, two outlets have been inaugurated: one near Ulm (Ludwig Kurz Autohaus Gmbh) and the other in the suburbs of Regensburg (Hackl Nutzfahrzeuge Gmbh). Renault Trucks has also raised its visibility in the north of the country with two new service outlets; one in the Hamburg region (Skandic Service Gmbh) and the other near Osnabrück (HiKu Nutzfahrzeug Gmbh).

The Renault Trucks network has also been expanding in Poland. After Biascan, Omni and Moto Elzet Klodzko in the first half of 2011, two new sites have been inaugurated recently: Wimex, in the east of the country just three hours from Warsaw, and On road Truck Services SA 30 kilometres from the capital. These sites provide maintenance and servicing of commercial vehicles. In the Czech Republic, in the Liberec region, Renault Trucks is represented by CSAD Turnov, which opened an after-sales counter last October. In Russia, the brand is now focusing on two major areas: Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Two new dealers, one in the north and the other south of Saint Petersburg, have upped Renault Trucks’ coverage in those zones. The success of the Renault Kerax, which is particularly suited to the country’s extreme weather conditions, will need support, and this comes with the opening of two new service points in Siberia this year. A little further south in Europe – Spain – the Renault Trucks network has expanded with the opening of seven new service points in Andalusia (Camion World Girona, Talleres Hermatrucks SL et Alonso y Ruano CB), Catalonia (MT Trucks-Lleida et Trucks-Seo), Galicia, and finally in the province of Léon (Bielae). The latter increases Renault Trucks’ presence in the northwest area of the Iberian peninsula. The company is strategically located in the communication hub between Lugo, Coruña and Ourense, the three coastal provinces that make up the region of Galicia. In Italy, a new service outlet near Milan (Erga) and tree dealerships: near Rome (Autocar), in the east of Sicily (Mavi) and near Turin (Savcam) have also been inaugurated. Savcam, is in the province of Turin, where Renault Trucks is well represented, and where there is high demand for commercial vehicles. Renault Trucks’ presence has also been bolstered in Africa, in the countries of the Maghreb first of all, and most particularly Algeria. In Oran and Mascara, where most of the country’s business activity takes place, a new service outlet has opened, and a second is planned for the months ahead. The brand continues to grow in stature in the south of the country, where different local service outlets have opened. Also, two service outlets are being set up in Angola, particularly in Viana. The French manufacturer is now highly visible in the centre, the north and the south of the country.

In the Middle East, Renault Trucks is increasing its presence this year, and more particularly in Iraq. The opening of two new service outlets around the Baghdad dealership will see business grow and Renault Trucks’ national coverage increase. Last December, Renault Trucks signed with the importer Rymco for exclusive distribution in Lebanon. This country is a promising market for Renault Trucks. The French manufacturer sold 33 vehicles to the company Averda this year, one of the biggest waste management companies in the country. The latter will receive 17 new Renault Trucks vehicles in the course of this year.

Bad spell for Toyota Toyota has said its nine-month net profit fell 57.5% to 162 billion yen ($2.12 billion), blaming the continued impact of the March 11 disaster, Thai floods and a strong yen. The company said operating profit also slumped by 72.3% to 117 billion yen in the nine months to December, with revenue down more than 10% to 12.88 trillion yen on year. But the Japanese car giant raised its full-year profit forecast to 200 billion yen, up 11.1% from the outlook it released in December. However, if realised, the figure would still be less than half that of the previous year. The maker of the Prius hybrid and Lexus said it expected to sell 7.41 million units worldwide in the year to March, 30,000 units more than its December forecast, and to post 18.30 trillion yen in revenue. "Toyota remains committed to pursuing an improvement of its earnings structure through various cost reduction activities as well as continuing the production recovery from the Japan Earthquake and floods in Thailand," the company said.

Bringing the B-MAX to production demanded a new approach to door construction, which has resulted in wide-open access for drivers, passengers and luggage; with the center pillars integrated into the doors themselves. The B-MAX also will deliver superior craftsmanship and high quality materials rarely found on an affordable compact car, together with flexible-seating and class-leading load-space.

Ford’s new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, with its advanced combination of power and efficiency, will be available on the B-MAX, as will Duratorq TDCi diesels. The Ford B-MAX goes on sale in Europe later this year.

Iran calls for embargo U-turn Iran has called on the EU to reconsider its plan to ban oil exports from the country. Iran’s oil minister Rostam Qasemi claims the Islamic state will not back down from its nuclear programme even if its crude oil exports grind to a halt and he has called on the European Union which accounted for a quarter of Iranian crude oil sales in the third quarter of 2011 - to review last week’s decision to ban Iranian oil imports. The sanctions against Iran, which are not yet in force, are aimed at shutting off its sale of crude. But Iran intends to get in there first by stopping exports to some European countries before the ban is put in place. While analysts insist that the global oil market will be largely unaffected by a cessation of trade with Iran, Qasemi has a more apocalyptic outlook: "Unfortunately the EU has succumbed to America's pressure. I hope they would review their decision on sanctioning Iran's oil exports. The international crude market will experience turmoil in the absence of Iranian oil with unforeseen consequences on oil prices."

NI’s fuel prices highest in UK Northern Ireland has the highest fuel prices in the UK, it has been revealed. The Consumer Council has revealed that motorists in the north pay an average of 134.6p a litre, compared to the 133.5p average in the rest of the U.K. Diesel prices are also higher in Northern Ireland. The average forecourt price was 142.8p per litre, compared with an average UK price of 141.9p.

But at around a penny a litre in January, the price variation with other UK regions was small compared with the gap in fuel prices between Northern Ireland and the Republic. In January petrol was 5p cheaper south of the border while diesel was 15p lower.

offer a service that is unrivalled because of the knowledge and expertise they’ve gained in the livestock transportation industry. They can also provide general goods transport through Ireland, the UK and across the rest of the continent.

“We’re based in Dundalk and have been established since 1999,” explained Declan.

“We have four drivers here along with myself. I’m the Managing Director and have the support of my wife and two kids, so you could say it’s very much a family business.”

Since 1999, Trainor Transport has grown to become one of the leaders in its field, and Declan explained that it’s an industry which has passed through the generations of his family.

Declan’s father started out driving trucks for a living and he admits that it has drawn him towards the current line of work he finds himself in.

“My father started out in his own business hauling cattle and I just got into it through that I suppose,” he said.

24 and went out and bought my own truck. It just took off from there basically. We got a few contacts in the livestock industry, which would still be our primary business today.”

Trainor Transport are a modern livestock transport company who offer a service above that of their rivals, which is reliable and timely to its customers.

Much of the company’s business outside Ireland sees them journeying to Italy to export cattle, sheep and pigs, as the Managing Director himself explained: “We would haul a lot of cattle for a company in Kells and mainly go to Italy and Morocco when we’re working outside the country. We would be bringing tiles and plants back from Italy on a weekly basis for companies over here which sell on the products to their customers.”

With the economy in Ireland in a dire state at present, Trainor Transport, like so many companies in the Emerald Isle, have also felt the harsh sting of the recession and have been doing their best to recover from the pinch.

Declan explained that while business has been steady through the storm, he and so many other businesses like his have been left to rue the recent major rise in fuel prices which have left things even tougher in already difficult times.

“Business is good and lively at the minute, but the rise fuel costs mean we have to do more for less,” he stated.

“It’s hitting a lot of businesses hard and none more than the transport industry, where many Irish companies are now buying their fuel abroad to try and save on their costs. It’s having a huge effect on business because customers have to be billed for the

extra costs and many don’t have the money to pay any extra for the service.”

Trainor Transport’s entire fleet is made up of Scania trucks which are aged from 2008 to 2011.

Declan and his team ensure that these trucks are maintained to the highest order so as they can deliver safely and on time across Ireland the rest of the continent.

“All the vehicles we have are satellite tracked and temperature monitored,” he explained. “We would only pass through the UK with them – we don’t do much work there just to make it clear.

Our work outside Ireland would mainly be in Italy.”

When transporting goods, Trainor Transport make sure that their customers’ items are carefully handled and arrive in perfect condition. This has been a top priority of the company since its establishment and is the main reason why they’ve acquired such loyal customers down the years.

In such tough times for companies nationwide, Declan acknowledges how fortunate he has been to have maintained the business of others and hopes to continue to do work with them into the future.

“We have a lot of good customers which include Viastar and Liffey Meats Group,” he said.

Lorna explains “The Sam Dennigan contract is only a few months old and it sees us delivering frozen produce to a selection of Dunnes Stores across Ireland. We were delighted to acquire this contract and it reaffirms our commitment to providing an efficient and reliable service,” Lorna revealed that the fleet has expanded over the years to meet the demands of their customers. “The company is based here in Kingswood Business Park on the lower Baldonnell Road, Dublin 22. Over the years our fleet has grown considerably, now including refrigerated vans, 26 rigids and 9 artics, in addition to 20 fridge trailers.”

“We specialise in the distribution of temperature controlled products, frozen and chilled. All of our trailers are equipped to carry one, or both, type of products.

On-time delivery is imperative in this business and it is something that we monitor on a daily basis.”

All maintenance work is outsourced and Lorna cannot express how important it is to have the fleet in top working order, especially in an industry where time is of the essence. “The fleet is regularly serviced and maintained.

Downtime is not an option in this industry. Our deliveries need to be at their destination on time, every time.”

To ensure that the customers' needs are met with precision, a reliable work force is essential and Lorna stressed that in this regard, Clare Distribution Services have the best in the game.

The fleet consists of DAF, Scania and MAN trucks, all of which are kept in pristine condition, both inside and out.

The fleet is equipped with DAS (Data Acquisition System). This system is the data login system of choice as it records all set times, alarm codes, ambient temperature as well as the

usual box temperature found in every day temperature recorders. This enables the fleet to be HACCP compliant, an essential requirement for the safe transportation of food stuffs. In addition, we have bluetree satellite navigation system installed within the fleet which allows us live vehicle tracking.

“Unfortunately in the economic climate we do not have the luxury of one driver to one truck and where necessary operate a schedule which sees multiple drivers assigned to onelorry. This requires more management

on many levels, especially as we pride ourselves on the condition of our fleet.

As the fleet has grown so too has the workforce. There are now 50 people employed by Clare Distribution Services, which is marked progression from when Mark set up the business 15 years ago.

Sligo’s on the right road When it comes to the provision and upkeep of a sustainable road network, Sligo County Council is right up there with the very best in the country. As we all know, quality roads serve as vital transport arteries, allowing both tourism and essential business to gain access to an area, preferably with the minimum of hassle. Many truckers will tell you that the roads in Sligo are in excellent condition considering the financial restrictions being forced upon the local authority by the ongoing recession, which means painfully limited funding and endless austerity measures.

I

t’s a thankless task. Seemingly impossible at times... How do you provide the citizens of a county / region with a viable modern road network and finance it with rapidlydwindling funds? Considering the difficulty of the challenge, the trusty team in the transport and roads division of Sligo County Council are doing a stellar job against all odds.

Working in tandem, Sligo County Council and Sligo Borough Council are endeavouring to protect the carrying capacity, operational efficiency and safety of national roads, develop a network of strategic and inter-urban roads in the Sligo & Environs area, plan for future traffic and transportation needs in Sligo, protect the historic city from traffic congestion and (where possible) protect key ecological landmarks from the potentiallydetrimental impact of new road projects.

Behind the scenes, the work continues unabated, on a daily basis.

Every day, the hard-working team takes to the road, literally. Surfaces are upgraded; constant improvements are made; new dressings are applied. New projects may be thinner on the ground than was once the norm (though there are some ambitious plans in place), but this is the case nationwide where a veritable raft of local and national projects have been abandoned due to financial limitations. However, the good news in Sligo is that money was well spent during the boom times and the standard of the county’s roads was brought up to a very high level.

The trick now is to sustain these. And, while it’s not ideal, the truth is that even in a worst-case scenario whereby no new roads were to be constructed in the county over the next three or four years, Sligo will still be able to offer some of the best routes and surfaces anywhere in Ireland. It may be a peripheral county, traditionally, but Sligo is now a popular commercial and industrial centre and the County

Council will leave no stone unturned as it strives to make the county as accessible, desirable and driverfriendly as possible.

As you make a journey through any part of the county, on a rural road or an urban street, be it for business or pleasure, a regular trek or a novel one, you will in all probability be oblivious to the latest phases of road improvements, relief roads, bridge widenings, dual carriageway improvements or junction upgradings.

You won’t know about the planned bypasses or those already in place, the great efforts that have been made to secure funding and the investment of time and labour involved. The correspondences, the tender processes, the complex nature of the work. The planning, the planning, the planning.

You’ll just park your car, van or truck and get on with your business.

Men like county manager Hubert Kearns, Tom Kilfeather (director of service, environment and infrastructure) and Tom Brennan (senior engineer, roads) do unbelievable work behind the scenes to ensure that motorists get from A to B as conveniently and safely as possible.

They ensure that the national primary routes, national secondary routes and regional routes in the county are maintained in pristine condition at all times, even in the depths of winter.

As mentioned earlier, it’s a thankless task and there are no accolades.

There’s no glory here.

But somebody’s gotta do it.

A number of projects are planned at present but some have been put on the long finger because the money simply isn’t there. Some other jobs have been cancelled or suspended – that’s just the way things are in Ireland today. That’s the place and the times we live in.

Nobody can do anything about it; we just have to move on.

Developing a highquality roads network is of paramount importance to Sligo. One

of Sligo County Council’s main responsibilities as a local authority is to plan and deliver high quality transport and service infrastructure to meet the future demands of the commercial and private sector.

Businesses and people only want to do business and interact where there is a wide range of infrastructure and facilities.

In this context, Sligo is very well positioned as a key centre for economic growth in the northwest, and the construction of major infrastructural projects, such as the county town’s new inner relief road, sends a positive message to existing and potential enterprises that the local authorities will deliver for Sligo.

The National Spatial Strategy confirmed Sligo’s status as the premier economic gateway of the northwest region. The Sligo local authorities are working with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority to develop a

transport infrastructure to underpin the region’s continuing growth and development.

In delivering on their transportation network requirements, local authorities also work closely with the Office of Public Works, the Forestry and Wildlife Service, An Garda Siochana, the Road Safety Authority and public utility service providers such as the ESB, Bord Gas, Eircom and other telecommunications service providers.

The newly-opened Sligo inner relief road has resulted in major benefits to motorists and will also facilitate the pedestrianisation of city centre streets.

The final section of the N4 (the longest national primary route in the State), into Sligo, was upgraded eight years ago.

The Sligo inner relief road, including 4.6km of dual carriageway and 1km of single carriageway, was opened in September 2005 after a-year-and-ahalf’s construction.

The dual carriageway passes through the town centre, ending across Hughes Bridge as a four-lane single carriageway; where the road out north of Sligo continues as the N15.

Road and a Western by-pass (amongst others) have been identified in the Sligo & Environs Development Plan 20102016 and the delivery of these projects – finance allowing - would further enhance Sligo’s position as a dynamic and progressive urban centre.

Sligo is the largest transportation node in the northwest, connected to Dublin via Carrick-on-Shannon by the national primary road, N4, while other national primary and secondary roads connect Sligo to Belfast (via Enniskillen), Derry and Letterkenny (via Donegal town), Galway, Ballina and other urban centres.

Strategic road objectives currently set out by Sligo Borough and Sligo County Councils include development of the following roads: ungrade and realignment of the N4/N15 from Hughes Bridge to the Sligo / Leitrim county boundary including the upgrading of the N16 from the N4/N15 junction to the Duck Street roundabout on the N18; the Western Distributor Road from the Caltragh interchange on the inner relief road through Ballydoogan to the Strandhill Road; realignment of the N16 Enniskillen

Road from the county boundary to Teesan / Ballinvoher to connect with the existing N15; and a strategic route option for a city bypass linking the N4 at Carrowroe with the realigned N15 and N16 north of the city.

Also on the inner relief corridor: upgrading of the junctions at John Street, Ted Nealon Street, Lord Edward Street. Lynns Place and Hughes Bridge, including the provision of additional approach lanes and filter lanes to improve access to the city centre and reduce delays to west-east traffic.

Furthermore, the national document Transport 21 and the Roads SubProgramme of the National Development Plan 2007-2013 outlines the Government’s principal objectives which impact on Sligo. These are the ongoing development of the Atlantic Road Corridor, the improvement of road links between the NSS Gateways, continued upgrading of road links to Northern Ireland, targeted improvements in key national secondary routes and investment in strategic non-national roads.

The Fiat Punto Van and Volkswagen Amarok have been named Category Winners of the Continental Irish Van of the Year 2012 title by the Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA) Van Jury.

All nine voting members of the IMWA Van Jury took part in the vote. In deciding on these category winners, the jury members took into account such attributes as load capacity, reliability, overall versatility, cost of ownership and drive comfort.

Volkswagen top commercial sales Volkswagen are the top selling Light Commercial Brand

January was a good month for Volkswagen as they were the top selling light commercial brand. Over the course of the month, Volkswagen sold 498 new commercial vehicles taking up 22.5 per cent of the Irish market. Ford and Renault came in second and third respectively.

Commenting on the January figures, Niall Phillips, Sales and Marketing Manager for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said: “Our dealers delivered an excellent performance in January thanks in no small part to the excellent value on offer, our special finance rates, new extended warranties and of course, the finest products on the market.” Indeed it has been a good start for commercial sales as 2,213 vehicles were sold, which is an increase on last year’s figure.

Surge in consumer business prompts triple expansion for Nightline An increase in business from retail clients has prompted a dramatic expansion for Ireland’s largest independent parcel carrier. Nightline has announced that two of its seven Irish depots have doubled in size while a third has grown by 50 per cent. The latest growth surge comes less than a year after the company revealed a ₏5.5 million redevelopment of its Dublin headquarters and a multi-million pound move to new premises in Belfast that are three times larger than its previous site in the city. The news has been revealed a few months ahead of the firm celebrating its 20th year in business. Nightline CEO John Tuohy said the expansion was a welcome indication of the volume of extra parcels it was carrying on behalf of retail customers.

"Being chosen as delivery partner by some of the UK's biggest names in e-commerce has generated significantly more parcel traffic.

The impact of that hasn't only been felt in one location but across all our depots. "We need to grow ourselves to have the capability of efficiently handling those extra volumes. Given the nature of the increase which we're seeing, we believe that it is not only sustainable but likely to grow still further." In addition to its UK regional office in Lancashire, Nightline has a network of seven depots across Ireland. During the latest wave of expansion, the firm's facility in Limerick grew from 8,000 sq ft to 16,000 sq ft while its site in Sligo increased by 10,000 sq ft to 16,000 sq ft. Nightline's depot in Cork - the company's third busiest - also saw its footprint move from 16,000 sq ft to 24,000 sq ft, roughly half the size of the new premises in Belfast which opened last September. Plans for the redevelopment of Nightline's headquarters in Dublin will increase that depot by 40 per cent. Mr Tuohy said that, in the last 12 months, Nightline had moved more than 11 million parcels, figures which were buoyed by the acquisition of deliveries for major UK retailers, including the Coast, Oasis, Warehouse and Karen Millen store chains. Those numbers are a far cry from those shipped when Nightline started trading in a Dublin back bedroom in May 1992. Mr Tuohy hinted that there would be "further momentous shifts" in the way the company's operations during the course of the coming year.

"We haven't been content to sit still since we began and we constantly strive not only to grow but to improve the way we do business on behalf of clients."

An increase in business means an expansion for Nightline

Investigation launched into bin lorry accident An investigation has been launched after a council employee was recently injured inside a bin lorry in Derry. The Health and Safety Executive have launched the investigation. The council employee suffered cuts to his leg during the recent incident. Shaun Gallagher, the chair of Derry City Council's environmental services committee, said the bin man climbed inside the lorry to free a trapped bag, but he triggered the refuse compactor. "The employee went to hospital but thankfully nothing serious is wrong. It could have been a very serious incident. "There are lessons to be learnt, we will certainly implement guidelines which come forward from the executive. The safety of council employees is paramount. We have a credited health and safety system in place," he said. Derry City Council confirmed that a report into the incident which happened last week has been forwarded to the Health and Safety Executive.

Volvo records 40% fourth-quarter profit increase Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo AB (VOLV-B.SK) is maintaining its 2012 Volvo has a fourth quarter rise in sales & profits forecasts after reporting a 40% rise in fourth-quarter net profit as a result of higher volumes. Volvo's net profit in the quarter was SEK4.8 billion, up from SEK3.4 billion for the same period in 2010 and slightly better than analyst expectations of SEK4.7 billion. Sales increased by 18% to SEK86.5 billion (from SEK73.4 billion last year), which was also above analysts expectations of SEK81.05 billion. "The Volvo Group's strong trend continued during the fourth quarter of 2011. Sales rose in all regions, profitability improved and cash flow was strong," Olof Persson, chief executive of Volvo, said in a statement. Volvo, the world's second-largest truck manufacturer after Daimler AG (DAI.XE), said orders in the quarter declined to 57,700 trucks compared with 62,100. The company said orders from Europe and South America declined while there was an increase in North America. Volvo expects the European market to fall by a further 6% during 2012. "The North American market for heavy-duty trucks rose to 216,000 vehicles in 2011. Thanks to competitive products and good sales efforts, the group succeeded in significantly strengthening its market share," said Persson. Volvo continues to have a positive outlook on demand, primarily based on the need to replace old trucks,. It retains its assessment that the total market in North America will continue to grow and end up at about 250,000 heavy-duty trucks in 2012. "We expect a slow start to the year and a gradual improvement as customers start to replace old trucks ahead of the new and stricter emission standards that come into force as of 2014," Persson added.

New Year Kicks Off to a Good Start for the Port of Cork’s Dry Bulk Sector January 2012 kicked off to a good start for the Port of Cork with over 76,000 tons of dry bulk animal feeds unloaded in one week, a record for the Port. The high quantity of feed which was unloaded as part cargo from five large bulk carriers, gives a welcome boost to the quantities of dry bulk material handled by the Port of Cork.

In the Republic of Ireland bulk cargoes have seen an increase of 2% across all ports and this growth is a reflection of the growing confidence in the agricultural sector.

Commercial Manager, Captain Michael McCarthy said: “Unloading over 76,000tonnes of dry bulk animal feeds at Ringaskiddy Deep-water Terminal in five days is an excellent boost for the port. It demonstrates the port’s capabilities when it comes to handling large ships with efficient and safe turnaround times. Many of the main feed importers are utilising the Port of Cork’s deepwater capacity with Panamax vessels arriving fully laden to lighten before proceeding to other Irish or UK Ports”

SDC First With Longer Trailer Approval SDC Trailers has become the first UK trailer manufacturer to be granted approval for its longer semi-trailers and continues to lead innovation within the industry with all five of its new models the first in the country to pass the strict VCA tests.

Under conditions of the DfT’s 10-year trial of longer trailers, all specifications must adhere to the current turning circle requirements to ensure maneuverability and safety on the UK road network.

After two days of extensive testing last week the complete range of SDC high volume trailers were approved by the VCA as meeting the requirements of the physical turning circle provision.

UK hauliers that have been allocated licences to take part in the trial can now come to SDC to get their hands on some of the first environmentally friendly trailers. There are currently 70 longer trailers under production at SDC and the company has a number of demonstration trailers available.

SDC has received approved for the following five longer trailers: 14.65m self-steer rated for 44 tonnes 15.65m self-steer rated for 44 tonnes 15.65m single Tri Dec command steer rated for 44 tonnes 15.65m single Muldoon command steer rated for 44 tonnes 15.65m twin Tri Dec command steer rated for 44 tonnes The first SDC longer trailer took to the roads today as part of Eddie Stobart’s fleet, making the first-ever delivery in the UK. SDC managing director Mark Cuskeran said: “We are delighted to be the first manufacturer to achieve our LST Model Report which makes our range of trailers road legal. SDC has been working on this project for over three years and we have been testing prototypes for 18 months. Our development team have been working tirelessly to keep us ahead of the game and help hauliers realise the environmental and business benefits that the trailers will bring.

“We were quite confident that our trailers would pass the physical testing carried out by the VCA as we have currently 70 LSTs inbuild. The challenge we set our engineers was to design and build 15.65m trailers which would be plated to 44 tonnes. The next models we aim to have approved are LSTs with full ENXL certification and step frame trailers.”
