Golf phenoms Jordan and Logan Medcalf playing first full season together at Lynden
By Connor J. Benintendi connor@lyndentribune.comLYNDEN – After winning the 2022 2A state basketball championship on March 5, Lynden senior Jordan Medcalf quickly transitioned to the spring sports season.
e Whatcom County Senior Basketball Classic was on March 11. Spring practices had already begun. At the event, Medcalf said changing gears and then changing right back wasn’t too bad since

“basketball is in my blood.”
It certainly is. Jordan’s athletic and fundamental basketball abilities are more than enough to compete at the college level, and he has plans to do so.
ere is, however, another sport that runs through the veins of the Medcalf family: golf.
Jordan and his younger brother, junior Logan Medcalf, rank near or at the top of Whatcom County’s high school boys golf talent. e brothers have had vastly di erent experiences in high school athletics but still rival one another’s skill level with a golf club.
Bursting onto the scene in 2019, Jordan won the boys 2A state golf title as a freshman. It was the rst time a ninth-grader won the 2A championship since 2003 and the rst title for a Lynden player since Tim Feenstra’s crown in 2001.
“It was a dream come true, my rst state championship,” Jordan said. “I didn’t really think much of it for a while but then everyone kept telling me it was a big deal.”
Jordan said despite the weather being less than preferable on the day of the 2019 championship, it was an experience he will always remember. He gave a lot of credit to Lynden’s Head Coach Jesse Weg, who helped guide him.
“I just went out and played. I didn’t really think about much just because a freshman winning state, nobody really thinks about that,” Jordan said. “I went out there and just proved everyone wrong.”
Logan was an eighth-grader at the time of Jordan’s title win. ere was no high school sched-
ule the following season due to COVID-19 shutdowns. His sophomore year, in 2021, the opportunities were limited to some events and invitationals but no true postseason.
Now, as a junior, Logan isnally getting a chance to compete for a state championship in his rst full season on the school roster.
“ is year I feel like we have a pretty good squad, so my goal as far as the team is to make state together,” Logan said. “I feel like I’m more focused because I know there’s stu going on this year, like state and districts.”
e 2A state championship is on his list of goals, Logan said. is year also marks the rst full season the brothers will get to compete alongside one another as a Lynden Lion. While they have played golf together all their lives, it’s still a situation bringing new experiences.
“It’s just fun,” Logan said. “We never really played in the same age division, but it’s always been fun to compete in golf tournaments against each other.”
Logan’s golf background is fairly extensive for his age, and even reaches national heights. He was a two-time runner-up at the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at Augusta in 2014 and 2015.
He was chipping champion his rst year and driving champion the following year.
“ at was pretty surreal, pretty fun,” Logan said. “I got to do those two years in a row.”
Jordan and Logan each competed at tournaments in the Washington Junior Golf Association (WJGA). Both have earned rst-place nishes in Sub-Dis-

trict events with Logan also claiming two District 1 championships in 2019 and 2020.
Even though his reputation on the golf course precedes him, Jordan is more focused on having fun and enjoying the season than winning another championship.
“It’s not really the main goal, but it would be nice,” Jordan said. “I’m just looking to have fun out there and help the team out. Hopefully, they can get it done, I’m just the support piece.”
Logan, like Jordan, played basketball in middle school.
He decided golf was more for him.
“I just feel like I was better at golf, and I could see kind of a future in it,” Logan said. “Not as much as in basketball like Jordan, so I kind of just gave up on basketball and focused more on golf.”
Logan plans to pursue golf post-high school, as Jordan is in basketball.
e sibling rivalry is very much alive, as you may expect from two brothers born one year apart.
Regardless, Jordan said he doesn’t let the competition between them distract him from his goal of having a good time.
“I don’t really pay attention to him, if he wants to beat me, he beats me,” Jordan said. “But he knows golf isn’t my sport, so I’m just out there to have fun.”
Logan prefers to use that competitive re natural to their brotherhood to fuel his advancement as a player.
“It’s nice being able to compete against him,” Logan said. “Because he will beat me at one match maybe and then it will just fuel me to get better the next one, and the next one.”
e Medcalfs were at the top of the ranks at the Birger Solberg Invitational
in last year’s shortened season.
e Invitational is an annual tournament that pits the Northwest Conference golf teams against one another at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Logan nished rst with a 70, and Jordan nished second with a 71 out of 42 total players.
at’s how good these two are.
e topic of that tournament sparked some brotherly banter.
“Anything but golf, I have him beat 95% of the time,” Jordan said.
Logan responded: “I brought home the trophy and the trophy has my name on it.” Jordan chirped back: “My trophy is in there too.”
As the older brother usually does, Jordan put in the nal word.
“Just know I’m a state champion, and he’s not,” Jordan said. “Two-time state champion.”
Touché, Jordan. Touché.
