The 2026 North Whatcom County spring preview
With state titles on the line, the road to the podium begins now

From the pitch to the local links and the diamond to the courts, spring sports in Whatcom County are back. This season is defined by a compelling mix of powerhouse programs and hungry underdogs.
Baseball
Lynden enters the year with a focus on redemption after missing the state tournament last season for the first time since 2018. Head coach Cory White returns all three AllConference selections: Matthew Carroll, Gordy Bedlington and Spencer Adams. The Lions added elite transfer catcher Joseph Bense to a roster that hangs its hat on pitching and defense.
Lynden Christian is coming off a 16-9 season and returns a deep, senior-heavy roster. Eight seniors, including All-

Conference picks Eli Maberry and Treyson Johnson, are pushing for their fourth consecutive state appearance.
Coach Noah Rawls expects a high-powered offense to lead the way this spring.
Nooksack Valley returns almost its entire roster from a 6-15 campaign. All-Conference honorable mentions Landon Stauffer and Evan Brown join workhorse pitcher Crew Bauman to try and push the Pioneers back into the district conversation.
Ferndale is led by nine seniors who remember the program’s 2023 state run. Despite losing Bense to Lynden, the Golden Eagles return RBI leader Carson Brown and pitcher Nolan Boleak (2.84 ERA).

with anyone if they prioritize strikes and defense.
The Mountaineers are focused on climbing the NWC standings behind senior shortstop and pitcher Kamden Moa.
After a winless conference run in 2025, the team is searching for consistency and growth.
Softball
Lynden enters the season with high expectations after a District 1 championship and a near-miss on a state trophy last year. While the Lions graduated six seniors, head coach Ryan Dykstra returns a formidable core. All-NWC senior Campbell DeJong is the team’s versatile leader, while junior ace Callie Ramerman returns to the circle for a squad that Dykstra says
will rely on its speed.
Lynden Christian is perhaps the most experienced team in the conference, returning nearly its entire roster from a 17-10 state-tournament team. Coach Tom Zylstra’s group is hungry for the program’s first state trophy since 2001. All-NWC firstteamer Taylor Craig anchors the lineup at first base, while junior Roxanne Lenning returns as the team’s primary arm.
Nooksack Valley remains a perennial threat as the most recent local team to hoist a state title (2022). Though the Pioneers lost key leaders behind the plate and in the infield, senior twoway standout Kestyn Wagter returns to lead a program that is always in the postseason conversation under coach Tom Harmon.
Ferndale is looking to climb the 3A standings in coach Brittany Arredondo’s eighth season. The Golden Eagles will lean heavily on sophomore
pitcher Charlotte Simon, who impressed as a freshman, and junior run-producer Maddy Slevin.
Meridian and Mount Baker are both navigating significant roster transitions. The Trojans are a young squad with seven underclassmen and will look to senior Lexi Neil and pitcher Rylie Mattingley to lead the way.
Meanwhile, Mount Baker is in a rebuilding phase after graduating seven seniors, including the NWC Offensive Player of the Year. Junior Kara Welters steps into a massive role as a two-way star for the Mountaineers.
Boys Soccer
In the 2A classification, the Lynden Lions enter the season with a score to settle after a heartbreaking penalty-kick loss in the district semifinals last year. Despite losing four seniors, the Lions remain an offensive powerhouse, returning All-NWC selection

Eduardo Briseno who scored 12 goals last year and the high-scoring brother duo of Markus and Malachi Koenen, who combined for 17 goals last spring.
Lynden Christian looks to climb the 1A standings behind the foot of junior Harvest Howell. Howell was the most clinical finisher in Whatcom County last season, netting a staggering 23 goals — nearly double the tally of the next closest competitor as the Lyncs finished 7-11-2.
Meridian aims to defend its 1A District 1 Championship title after going 9-7-3 in 2025. While the Trojans graduated All-NWC first team star Kellen Todd, they remain dangerous with second-team selection Skyler Rowe and senior Omar Abdo (eight goals) returning to the pitch.
The “rebuild” label defines the outlook for both Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker. The Pioneers (2-16) face a massive transition after graduating 12 seniors, leaving Adrian Chavez and Chris Moncada-Castillo to lead a young roster. Mount Baker (0-16) also navigates a leadership change after losing top scorer Austin Simmons and senior Luis Zavala, placing the offensive burden on Brayden Richardson as the Mountaineers search for their first win of the new campaign.
In 3A, Ferndale (4-8-5) begins a new chapter after missing the postseason in 2025. The Golden Eagles look to Evan Saxman to spark the offense following the graduation of AllNWC selection Coen Braun.
Track and Field
Lynden girls tied for fourth place at the 2A state meet last year and the Lions return some of their key athletes. Senior Sloan Dickson is back after capturing both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter titles last year. Conrad Timmer returns after placing seventh in the boys long jump. Elizabeth Leland was
15th in girls high jump at state in 2025. Asher Samms looks to improve on a top-10 finish in the 110-meter hurdles at state.
Lynden Christian will have a strong girls team after tying for second place in 1A last year. Etta DeJong, Estela Hernandez, Kaelyn Hinton, Laila Mallema, Reagan Lenssen, Caitlin Kok and Josie Bajema look to lead the girls squad as key returners. The boys are highlighted by distance runner Nickolas Luce, pole vaulter Gavin Haskell and Logan VanDalen, who sprints and jumps.
After taking fourth at the 1A state meet last year in high jump as a freshman, Treven Scheenstra returns with high hopes in his sophomore season with Nooksack Valley. Kade Mitchell looks to lead the Pioneers in the discus. He’ll be a strong duo in the javelin along with Brian Leyerly, who is also competing in high jump. Gretchen Elmendorf ran in the 300-meter hurdles at state last year and returns for her junior year.
Ferndale returns two field athletes who participated at the 3A state championships last year. Marcus Perez returns after a fifth-place finish in the 3A boys javelin. Lillian Brunson enters her sophomore campaign after taking 12th in the girls triple jump last year.
The Trojans boys and girls teams took fifth and sixth at the 1A state meet last year. Logan Ignacio looks to avenge a narrow loss in the 1,600-meter race and Amelia Koning will defend her triple jump state title. Reuben TeVelde returns after a third-place finish in the 800-meter dash. Trigg McConnell enters his junior season after a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at state. Rhett Duersch is fresh off a wrestling state title and aims to improve on a third-place finish in shot put. Meridian will be a threat to place in the top five as a team at state once again.
Mount Baker is led by their
400-meter runners Brice Cooper and Jane Lentz, who placed eighth and fifth, respectively, at the 1A state meet last season. Lentz will team with Ellie Hanstead and Reese Brown on the Mountaineers’ 4x200-meter relay team that lost one senior from their team that took eighth place at state last year.
Girls Tennis
Lynden is poised for a big year in tennis after senior twins Halley and Avery Brooks captured the 2A doubles title last year to bring the Lions their first tennis state championship since 2009.
Rilanna Newcomb enters her senior season after a fourthplace singles finish in 2025.
Aubrey Lynch is the Golden Eagle’s top returner after being selected to the All-Northwest Conference first team in 2025.
Ferndale lost three All-NWC seniors, but have an experienced team returning in 2026 with six seniors leading the Golden Eagles.
Boys Golf
Meridian won the 1A state championship last season and has placed in the top four at state
for three-straight years. They lost two all-conference seniors from last year, but return senior Matthew Blankenburg, who placed second in state in 2025. Ryker Havland also returns after missing the cut at the state tournament last season.
Lynden lost their top golfer from last season, Jack Stapleton, but the Lions have four seniors in 2026. Charles Broersma, Sullivan Petz, Cody Rolie and Luke Tryon lead the Lions with the most experience.
Lynden Christian lost Michael Deyoung, who was the Lyncs’ only golfer at state last season. LC is now led by six upperclassmen including three seniors: Hayden Herwerden, Mark Matzel and Owen Visser.
Nooksack Valley’s only competitor from the state championships graduated, so the Pioneers look to build around Jayden Anderson, Owen Wichers, Abram Bons, Blake Anderson and Ethan Anderson, who begin the season on Nooksack Valley’s varsity lineup.

two seniors — Brockie III and Jeremiah Van Diest — as they try to return to the top of 3A golf after winning the 2023 state championship.
Mount Baker had one player at the 1A state tournament last year: Payten Albitia, who returns alongside three juniors: Conan Mapes, Jack Fleece, Andrew Savchak and two sophomores: Samuel Savchak and Preston Moa.

Girls Golf
Kinsley Rector is Lynden’s top golfer and the reigning 2A District 1 champion. She’s the only senior on this season’s team as the Lions are a younger squad after graduating two seniors from last year. Rector and junior Preslie Steinbach look to anchor Lynden’s golf team.
Lynden Christian has a unique roster featuring three seniors and four freshmen. After failing to send any golfers to state, the Lyncs look to 2026 to find postseason success.
Nooksack Valley is looking to improve throughout the season with seniors Brittyn Jensen and Naomi Hjort leading the Pioneers. Last season no golfer advanced to state, so Nooksack Valley is aiming to have competitors in the district championships later this season.
Junior Emily O’Tool returns for Ferndale after placing 47th at the 3A golf state championships last year. The Golden Eagles lost Sadie Rehmert, who was an all-conference selection, but the Golden Eagles will build around three seniors: Lacey Brattain, Adelina Gonzalez and Piper Singleton.
Meridian has two of the top girls golfers in 1A. The Trojans won’t compete as a team this year after five seniors graduated from a core group that built Meridian into a 1A powerhouse. Kali Tan, a sophomore, and junior Dallas Reinke both return after being co-champions of 1A District 1 in 2025.
Mount Baker is hoping to improve around its two upperclassmen Sierra Harder and Addison Cohn. The Mountaineers did not have a golfer compete at state last year.
