Hello Again! This year, as it has been in the past, gives me an opportunity to say “Hello again!” to those who are familiar with our community, and give a big “Welcome!” to those for whom this is their first experience with the all the delightful people, places and events that make Lynden have such a special place in our hearts. In this publication we attempt to give you just a small sample of those wonderful individuals, various community organized and produced events, and locations for recreation around town, as best as we can in such a short format. Within the covers of this directory you will also find local businesses, large and small, whose support through membership of the Lynden Chamber of Commerce make it possible for us to engage in producing opportunities for family and friends to gather. Please use them as your providers, as they have shown through their membership, that they care about Lynden, too! Events such as the Lynden Farmers Day Parade, Northwest Raspberry Festival, “Dutch Treat” Trick or Treat, and Northwest Lighted Christmas Parade are not just about celebrating Lynden as a place, but Lynden as people people who care for each other, celebrate together, and welcome those whom we don’t know into our community. Vern Meenderinck, Lynden Parks Director
When Vern Meenderinck started working for the City of Lynden in 1983, what is today’s Bender Fields was a vast swath of cornfields. Now it’s a sports complex providing playing space for soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse and cricket. Having such a highly developed 56 acres for recreation is truly a rarity for a community of about 15,000 residents. “For cities our size, there are very few that have this,” said Meenderinck. Meenderinck’s city career began the same year the core portion of Bender opened up. He was part-time as a maintenance worker who helped set up the adult fastpitch softball fields. He became a full-time employee for the city in 1986, then took over supervision of City Park as well and later Berthusen Park. Those three were the only
parks Lynden had for a while; now there are 10. He became overall parks and recreation director in 1997. (Although a sign says Lynden Recreational Park, this chunk of land has always just been known as Bender Fields.) In 1983, the first four fields were used almost exclusively for adult fastpitch. The city added four fields for slowpitch softball and youth sports. The up-and-coming sport of bocce, especially played by seniors, also got its own fenced grassy area. By 1990 Bender had 12 baseball/softball fields, and soccer was played on top of the same field surface. Local voters agreed to form the Lynden Regional Parks and Recreational District in 1997, using the same boundaries as the entire Lynden School District rather than just the city. A bond was passed to buy what is now the north 21 acres of Bender Fields, creating space for proper soccer and lacrosse fields, expanding on the previous 35 acres. two upcoming additions, the first being the Mt. Baker Rotary Park, slated to open in summer 2020. It will include climbing boulders and lighted basketball and pickleball courts, and also a sand volleyball area. Just recently approved by the City Council is a “pump track” for BMX and mountain bikes, also intended for construction in 2020.

On the grounds are restrooms and a canteen building, a kids’ playground, exercise stations, an offleash dog area, and the Parks Department offices and shop. The popular Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail runs through Bender Fields.
Much work done at Bender is the result of people in the past having a vision for the future, and then dedicating themselves to making it happen. Volunteer labor has had a major impact on Bender Fields, with equipment and materials often donated, Meenderinck said.
“Trying to add more and more opportunities for people for recreation,” Meenderinck said, summarizing. “We’ve gone from three parks to 10 now, plus the trail system, which started in 1997. We keep trying to add to that.” The next big project he could see happening at Bender at some point is installing, hopefully, a turf field. Standard grass fields can handle only so much use before they get torn up, especially after rain. A turf 6
“A lot of time is spent trying to keep the fields up and keep them playable,” Meenderinck said. “Turf fields are one of the things we’re looking at. Whether or not it’ll happen, I don’t know. They’re expensive to put in.”
Lynden is one of few communities that has a youth sports program run solely by volunteers. That frees up the parks department to focus its time, money and effort on expanding and improving the recreational facilities of the city. Lynden Youth Sports and the YMCA each have their own boards and run their own programs. “We depend a lot on the community and individuals to help out,” Meenderinck said.

Raspberry Ridge golf course and grill
Though just minutes from downtown Lynden, Raspberry Ridge Golf Course & Grill carries a countryside feel and a reputation as a place to get together with friends. “You can kind of escape the city environment for an hour,” co-owner Jon Olson said. “It has a good community feel. We’re six miles from any of these towns. It may seem like we’re in the country, but in this day and age, six miles isn’t very far at all.” Jon and Leanne Olson recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of Raspberry Ridge, and Jon said his favorite part of running the business is the people he gets to meet day after day. “My favorite part is definitely the relationship

between Leanne and me and our customers,” he said. “They know us on a personal level and we know them on a personal level. We want it to be a fun environment where we can relate to each other.” The nine-hole course, located on Hannegan Road south of Lynden, is ideal for both beginner and veteran golfers. Jon said Raspberry Ridge is the driest golf course around, as it has exceptional drainage. That was the idea when the Bill Robins family created this golf course in the early 1980s on the sandy soil of their previous raspberry acreage. “You can play year-round golf,” Jon said on a playable day in December. “We had over three inches of rain this week, and you wouldn’t know it at all out there.” Raspberry Ridge was recently voted one of the 2019

Jon said about 45,000 people cast votes in the contest. “We’re very excited about that,” Jon said. “It was a little unexpected, but we know we have a good product here, and we want it to be as good as it can be, for sure.” Raspberry Ridge features a pro shop, open fairways, large greens, views of Mount Baker and just the right amount of sand and water hazards to make golf interesting for players at any skill level. Lynden Skateway
Brenda Van Ornum has loved roller skating ever since she was a little kid and she has been skating her entire life. So it only made sense for her to one day own a skating rink. She and her late husband, Pete, were pretty early in their married life when they bought Lynden Skateway and Bowl in 1976 on Judson Street just below downtown. That original building burned down in 1994, but the couple rebuilt the business in 1996 as Lynden Skateway. Today, this is the only roller skating rink left in Whatcom County. “It is a very hard business to run mainly because it’s not something that just anybody can do,” Van Ornum said. She said that’s because it’s not a typical 12-monthsa-year type of business. The summer months are the 14
slowest for Lynden Skateway because people want to be outside in the warm weather. “In the summer, we’re open, but I wouldn’t consider that we make any money,” VanOrnum said. “We’re lucky to kind of just break even. When it’s summer, people are on vacation and outside.” Back at the start of the business, kids didn’t have as many options of things to do, Van Ornum said, so coming to the rink had more of an attraction. Van Ornum said October to June are the busiest months for the rink and during the winter holidays things can even get a little over-busy. A roller derby team makes Lynden Skateway its home rink. Even with those ups and downs in a year, Van Ornum sees a future for Lynden Skateway. “It was a lifelong thing we figured we would always do,” she said. Van Ornum currently runs the business with her youngest daughter, Terri Johnson. She said the two have always gotten along and manage together well.

“All three of our kids worked in the rink at different times, but she’s the one that really took to the actual business part of it,” VanOrnum said. With her husband’s passing in 2017, Van Ornum said, the hardest part of running Lynden Skateway is doing all the small things including building maintenance. “He did all the upkeep. The changing of the light bulbs and fixing minor things and now I have to either hire it done or find someone to do it for me,” she said. “That has been the biggest challenge. My whole life I have never wanted to be the leader of anything. I’ve
always wanted to be the helper.” That aside, Van Ornum said she’s not entirely sure what the future holds, but she does see the business continuing in the family. Brenda and Terri rely on each other a lot to keep the business running, but as she’s getting older mom is starting to cut back on her time at the rink. “My daughter intends to keep it running,” VanOrnum said. “I really count on her, but I know she really counts on me. I think she wants to keep it going, so we’ll see.”

Patterson and Indian Jim Newest City Parks
Several parks in Lynden are so new they don’t even have a name on a sign for them yet. And yet these newest parks tap deeply into the history of Lynden. Patterson Park? Yes. It is at the south end of Seventh Street. It has picnic tables, paths and a modest children’s play area, installed by volunteer groups a few years ago. Beyond, out in open area, are the catch baskets for playing disc golf, extending across Sixth Street toward the city water and wastewater treatment plants. All of this area, it’s important to know, is floodplain for the nearby Nooksack River, and so all of the structures have to be able to withstand the occasional high water that comes along.

And thereby comes the explanation of the name Patterson. This spot is part of the very earliest settlement of what would become the town of Lynden. It was on the gentle slope from the Nooksack River that Colonel James Alexander Patterson, who had been in the Fraser Gold Rush of 1858, built a crude log cabin and barn and kept some cows on natural prairie near the river. By a native mother he was the father of two young daughters, Dolly, 6, and Nellie, 3, and he needed care for them. As it turned out, “a deal was struck,” says local historian and City Council member Ron DeValois. Washington Territory pioneers Phoebe and Holden Judson agreed to take in the girls if they could live on the site. In pursuit of their “ideal home,” the Judsons came up river in 1870, with Indian assistance, to become the first permanent white settlers of what is Lynden today. As for Indian Jim, he is a key person in the story

too. More fully known as Jim Yelokanim of the Nooksack tribe, he was a leader at the Squa-ha-lish village on the south side of the river. Born in 1811, he was still strong enough at almost 60 to be one of the carriers of the Judsons’ belongings, on his back, in 1870. Indian Jim was very friendly, and helpful, to the arriving settlers at Lynden, says DeValois. That is also the account of Robert Emmett Hawley, of the second permanent family, in his memoir book “SkqeeMus.” Indian Jim lived to be 100, dying in 1911. His grave is in the Nooksack tribal cemetery alongside Northwood Road on Lynden’s burgeoning east side. Among the scores of houses that have been built there in recent years — and also the new Lynden Middle School — a tract of trees and open area has been preserved to tie into the city trail. This is Indian Jim Park, again as yet without a name sign to identify it.
The City Council’s Parks Committee consulted with present-day Nooksack tribal members on the naming. Vern Meenderinck, city parks director, hopes that proper signage for both parks can be an Eagle Scout project someday. DeValois understands that well-established City Park on Fishtrap Creek was also once a Nooksack village site. Two more properties have more recently been acquired by the City of Lynden for future park purposes. They are 40 farmland acres from the Heusinkveld family along Benson Road, to be called Benson Park, and 8.8 acres at the confluence of two streams between 17th Street and Double Ditch Road. Over decades, Roland Dickinson put together and lived on this beautifully secluded forested site until turning it over for other generations to enjoy.

Berthusen Park and the Antique Tractor Club
The Puget Sound Antique Tractor & Machinery Association is approaching its 50th year, and Brian Dykstra and Lee Hetterly are looking forward as well as back. The club and its members cover multiple generations, so the proverbial “passing of the torch” is always essential to moving forward. Dykstra was born on the first day of the club’s annual show, now called Vintage Farming Days, in 1983. His mother brought infant Brian to the show on its last day that year. “I would say Lee represents the first 50 years and I represent the second 50 years,” Dykstra said. The club was founded in February 1972 with 11 members. According to the club’s Constitution and Bylaws, “The purpose of the PSAT&MA shall be to 22
promote the collection, restoration, preservation and exhibition of gas and steam tractors, gas and steam stationary engines, and farm machinery of early local industries.” The very earliest events took place on property of the Lynden Airport along Depot Road (now covered with houses), but the club’s permanent home soon became Berthusen Park, where its members have made a variety of major improvements over the years. Hetterly said the club’s identity really took shape once it had these grounds to call home. The antique tractor club has big aspirations for the park’s future, which go hand-in-hand with the future of the association and its efforts to bring people out to Berthusen. “It’s the best park in Whatcom County,” Hetterly said. “What Hovander is to Ferndale, Berthusen is to Lynden.” Berthusen Park was a gift to the city in 1944 by the

homesteading couple Hans and Lida Berthusen. Its 236 acres include stands of towering old-growth trees, and tractor club members were deeply involved in shoring up the huge barn that dates back to 1901. Trails and picnic facilities are amidst the verdant forest canopy on either side of Bertrand Creek. Apart from the tractor club, which uses only frontage on Berthusen Road, it’s a popular place for visitors. The 2020 Vintage Farming Days on Aug. 5-8 will feature Rumely tractors as the year’s celebrated brand. The show typically includes grain threshing and steampowered sawmill demonstrations, daily parades, a tractor pull competition, kids’ activities, a swap meet and, of course, just the overall display of steam engines, antique tractors and more from the early days of mechanization. Beyond the annual summer show, the club hosts general membership meetings on the second Monday of each month at Lynden’s Fairway Café. Board meetings take place the last Monday of the month in the Northwest Washington Fair board room.

Razz Fest Curt Maberry Classic
When Dave Black, former owner of Dutch Mothers restaurant, approached real estate broker Jerry Blankers of Muljat Group North with a proposition, Blankers had no idea what he was about to get into. The annual sidewalk sale in downtown Lynden was dying, with fewer people attending, so Black had an idea for something new to take its place. “Have you ever thought of having a 3-on-3 basketball tournament?” he asked. Blankers hadn’t, but once he got to thinking about it he figured it had potential. So in 1997 Blankers started making plans for a 3-on-3 street basketball tournament. Later it would be merged with other events to become what is now the annual Northwest Raspberry Festival — 28
a huge July hit flooding downtown with people. But orchestrating a basketball tournament was more difficult than he had imagined. “The first year was a disaster,” Blankers said. He had no clue how expensive basketballs and hoops were, which would put Muljat Group North, the sponsor footing the bill, at a deficit for several years. Already behind on money, then came another setback: Only 37 teams signed up the first year, far less than expected. But Blankers kept grinding, never wavering in his focus and vision, and the next year sign-up grew to 54 teams. Things started looking up. It wasn’t until the fourth year that the tourney finally began breaking even money-wise. “That’s alright,” Blankers said. “We do it for the community.

Then everything skyrocketed. The Northwest Raspberry Festival, also known as Razz Fest, has grown to bring in 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each year. It now features two music stages with live performers, a 300-vehicle classic car show and, of course, the 3-on-3 tournament which in 2019 set a record of 248 teams participating. It is now named the Curt Maberry Memorial Classic after the local family man, both sports booster and raspberry grower, who passed in 2007. Front Street and side streets, it is now the second-largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the state behind Spokane Hoopfest. Blankers starts early looking ahead to each summer’s Razz Fest. All those basketballs have to be ordered by the first of February to arrive on time. “We have a really good group of volunteers,” Blankers said. “It’s a lot of work. People don’t realize what goes on behind the scenes.” With it being the secondlargest in the state, does he have any plans of trying to surpass Spokane? “No way I’ll compete with them,” Blankers laughs.

Homestead Farms Golf Club
Golfers can play Homestead Farms Golf Club 100 times and still feel like it’s a completely different course. That’s part of what makes Homestead a special place to play golf, Homestead general manager Mick O’Bryan said. “It’s kind of a unique experience every time you come out because of the layout and the multiple tees we have, it’s kind of the challenge of all the water and that you get a different bounce and a different roll every time you play,” O’Bryan said. “We get people out here that battle it all the time. Some of the comments we get back in is it’s never the same course twice depending on the conditions or the weather or just playing it every day.” The course’s signature hole is undoubtedly the 18th, with its waterfalls and island green. It’s a par 5, and it presents a challenge to experienced players and

amateurs alike. While Homestead’s most famous hole is a long one, the club shortens up its course significantly to allow for winter play, making every hole into a par 3. “The par 3 course actually gets probably as much, if not more play as the regular course,” O’Bryan said. “Basically we use all of the 18 greens and we take two of the tee blocks and move them up to par 3 length.” In the winter, golfers can pay a $25 par 3 fee to get a golf cart and the opportunity to play 18 holes. All the tees are within four or five feet of the cart path, O’Bryan said, meaning players don’t have to trudge far on the wet fairways to play. “The greens are always good year-round,” O’Bryan said. “We’re just trying to continue to use the facility even when the weather or the conditions aren’t perfect.” Homestead Farms Golf Club is located at 115 E. Welcome New REsidents A wonderful program offered by the Lynden Chamber of Commerce is the Welkom Basket. This program was put in place to welcome new residents to town and is a great tool for them to get to know their new home. Each basket is filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses and is personally delivered to the residents by our wonderful Lynden Ambassadors, Virgi Diephuis and Ada Voskuilen. During their visits, Virgi and Ada share about Lynden, and also take that time to get to know each new family, giving us the ability to discover why they moved here, and what they are looking for. This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in helping us make the families feel welcome, and it is also the chance for the new residents to get to know Lynden and be reminded why this is such a great place to live. It also gives our members a chance to get information about their business out to the community in a fun and inviting way.
