Mentoring program harnesses the power of personal relationship conviction: “Every kid is one caring adult from being a success story”

The power of person-to-person relationship.

Make that adult with student, one hour per week, and you have the vision that drives the home-grown Be The One mentoring program in Whatcom County school communities.

Nancy and Dennis McHarness of Lynden are the ones who made this dream a reality. At first their partnership with schools consisted of raising $10,000 to add books to the five public school libraries of the community. Then they learned of the profound way that one-on-one mentoring can help youth believe in themselves and find their way in life.

In 2012 a deal was struck for a community mentoring program at Lynden High School. From six matches of a student with an adult the first year, the idea took off to 25, then more -to the point of hiring Lisa Reynolds as a first mentoring coordinator, and she continues in the role today.

This is the conviction behind it all, borrowed from youth motivational speaker and author Josh Shipp: “Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.”

Through community buy-in, the local program has grown to where it is now implanted at Lynden Middle School, at Nooksack Valley and Ferndale high schools, and most recently -in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic -- at Lynden Christian High School. The number of matches is in the hundreds.

The leaders found ways of creatively keeping up student-adult connections even when schools were shut down from normal.

The beauty of mentoring is the “relational impact that changes lives,” Nancy McHarness said. And that’s not just for the students. “This is transformative for adults as well,” Dennis McHarness said.

Be The One keeps getting the word out about One Student, One Adult, One Hour, on posters, shirts, hats ... and annual reports. When you look at all the smiling faces, masked or not, showing the bond of mentor and mentee, and their appreciation of each other, you can’t help but smile back.

A high school girl says of her match, “She is just so sweet and she’s like a mom to me. I can always count on her no matter what.” A young man says, “ My mentor helps me think about what I want to do with my life. He believes in me.” Value flows the other way in mentoring too. “I learn and grow from the relationship. I am excited

to be a part of the program,” says the three-year mentor of an LHS freshman.

Although there are guidelines to be followed, participants in Be The One become true friends, a testimony to the quality of matches made. Many mentors have followed their youth through to the celebration of a high school graduation, and beyond.

What is unique about what was started in Lynden? The McHarnesses identify several ways:

•It is campus-based, letting schools put out the welcome mat to let community members in.

•The one-hour-per-week requirement is “a relatively easy lift for most adults,” Dennis said.

•Be The One does not rely upon any governmental funds or outside grants -- it is 100% community funded.

•Schools are vetted into the process by deciding and directing their mentor coordinators as school employees.

•Any kid may participate.

The founding pair feel responsible to carry forward the mission, which is fundamentally to raise the needed money and mentors in the community. They are appreciative of businesses that have committed multi-year support to Be The One, and they cite a particular need for male and multicultural mentors. They know that the student desire for a mentor will always be there.

In December 2017, Linda and Cole Hilton purchased the building at 108 W. Main St., Everson and chose The Bourbon Bar and Grill as the new name for the bar previously known as Bobby Lee’s.

“Our current menu is familiar comforts, some with our own twist,” the Hiltons said. “Our hand-pressed burgers are really popular. We also offer steaks, seafood and pasta. We have $5 burger specials every Wednesday, rib night on Thursdays, prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays. Our Prime rib dip on a ciabatta bun is also one of our best sellers. Happy Hour is every day from 3 to 6 p.m.”

While the venue does serve an array of beers and cocktails, it is family friendly daily until 9 p.m. Breakfast is served daily from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Bourbon hosts live acoustic music during dinner on Fridays, and karaoke after 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant’s Facebook page updates

followers on daily specials and special musical guests. A recent food post showed freshly-made orange and cranberry bread pudding. For New Year’s Eve 2021, the Bourbon presented a masquerade with a DJ and karaoke.

“At The Bourbon, we all work as a team and try to have everyone cross trained so that we can all pitch in where needed,” the owners said.

Between taking over the space to create their own vibe, the pandemic occurred which gave them more time to remodel.

“We have remodeled the building extensively since purchasing it in Dec 2017,” they said. “There really isn’t anything left inside, or out that hasn’t been remodeled at this point. The bathrooms, bar, floors, walls and furniture have all been changed. We plan to build a new kitchen on the back of the building sometime in 2022 as well. Inside we wanted to maintain a cozy atmosphere with a welcoming vibe. We added the new patio on the west

“We’re so happy to see so many people bringing their kids in for a meal,” they said. “It was hard to imagine creating a family atmosphere in that building when we first bought it, as it had always been a bar. We’ve tried as hard as we could to make it a restaurant first, and a bar second. We’re overwhelmed by the support from the community, especially the families.”

During the fall 2021 flooding, the Bourbon served a free entrée to those impacted by the damage.

A place for women in Lynden

Laura Bouma, owner of Cheeks Boutique, opened her business in 2011 with the goal of creating a lovely and happy environment for women to shop in Lynden.

“During that time, we had no shops for women,” said Bouma. “So I was just filling that gap and really wanted to see the growth of Lynden and more retail companies.”

Cheeks Boutique is known for carrying a selection of hand-picked designer denim along with other clothing items and accessories, with a goal of having pieces for every occasion and woman.

“We have a lot of well-known brands that work really hard to make good clothing,” said Bouma. “I think that’s why a lot of people shop with us because the quality over quantity is there.”

So why did Bouma focus on jeans for her store?

“Designer jeans, a lot of them are made in the United States, the denim just feels so good, and just puts everything into the right place,” said Bouma. “You can go with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and look really great.”

Lynden is Bouma’s hometown, and she has had a positive experience of owning her business in Whatcom County and the support she receives from the community.

“It’s wonderful, you get a lot of support from the community, which is really great, especially during these last couple years, with how hard it’s been to own a business,” said Bouma.

Some of Bouma’s favorite parts of owning Cheeks Boutique are her employees, getting to know the women in the community, and bringing joy to people’s day.

“I absolutely love to work with lovely women both in the community and women that work here at Cheeks,” said Bouma, “and I have been privileged to hire really wonderful women that have increased the growth of this business.”

Some of those wonderful women include Shannon Zylstra and Kiya Vander Yacht. Zylstra has been working at Cheeks Boutique for eight years and is the primary buyer for the business.

“She has a heart and vision for Cheeks that is beautiful,” said Bouma.

Vander Yacht helps with styling customers and works hard on the aesthetic of the store and creating an inspiring and lovely space for shoppers to be, according to Bouma.

“When our customers walk in and meet Kiya they instantly know she loves what she does,” said Bouma.

Bouma, as the owner of Cheeks Boutique, has to wear many hats in her business such as being the marketing director, buyer and doing customer service.

Bouma has a degree in visual communication technology (graphic design) which has helped her with her business and inspired her to open Cheeks.

“I love visuals and I get to do merchandising here, I get to do web work, social media, photography,” said Bouma. “So it just really goes to the core of what I’ve been doing for 20 years now.”

Kampgrounds of America

Since 1962, Kampgrounds of America has been the place to create unforgettable moments, such as relaxing with family or friends, enjoying the great outdoors, or gathering around a fire.

According to the KOA corporate website, there are nearly 500 campgrounds around the United States and Canada, 14 of those in Washington State.

The Lynden/Bellingham KOA is the northernmost of the group.

Within Whatcom County, the Lynden/ Bellingham KOA has been a popular destination for many Canadian guests for years, but Vicki Lockhart said her family found locals came during the pandemic to fill the gap.

Siblings Lockhart, Eddy Martin, and Terri Rhoads are the next generation of the Martin family to own and operate the local campground, which used to be located outside of Lynden’s city limits in the forest and farmland.

While the site still has 25 acres, Lynden has

more recently extended its city limits beyond this park-like setting of pond and grounds.

The Martins’ parents, Shirley and Danny Martin, moved to Washington from California around 40 years ago. The Martins embraced the KOA standards and added their own mark of special activities. Family-friendly films are shown each summer weekend. Games with prizes are also planned. Children have craft times. Every Canadian and U.S. holiday is celebrated.

When Lockhart’s sister Terri became the mother of triplets, the campground began years of hosting triplet family reunions. It was something her mother Shirley especially enjoyed, Lockhart said. The siblings carry on the tradition of creating a special place that feels like home.

Lockhart and her brother do live nearby and are hands on for the location. “I feel blessed every day I wake up,” she said. “I live in God’s country.”

“There’s camping for everyone,” Lockhart said. Everyone in the family – and even their dogs – is welcome, but dogs must be on leash. Some sites have hook-ups for water, electricity and sewer. The upper campground is for

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the typical activities may have changed, but the standard for cleanliness was only enhanced. During the winters, the on-site store and activities are shut down. Everything opens in spring on March 1 for the season.

“The feedback from locals this past year was ‘awesome’,” Lockhart said. Now those within Whatcom County and Washington vie for spots with returning Canadian regulars. What seems impossible today will soon become your warm-up.

For Jeannie Davidson, feeling better at 50 than at 48 was her goal. At the time, she didn’t know she’d end up running the business, once known as e2, and renaming it Forge Fitness.

“Christie and Kyle Duque started it and built an amazing community,” Davidson recalled. “I was 48 at the time and feeling ... not great. I honestly had no interest in being there but got roped into it. Kyle was training me, at the time, and had asked me to make some goals.”

By the time she turned 50, Davidson had run a one-half marathon.

“I not only felt better physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” she said.

When the Duques decided to sell their business, Davidson decided to make an offer.

“That is when we became Forge Fitness,” Davidson said. “My goal is to offer the life changing experience I had to others. There is

the business, Christie is the gym manager. In the fitness industry for three decades, Christie Duque “knows it inside and out,” Davidson said.

“She is an incredibly talented instructor and people will come from a long way to attend one of her classes,” Davidson said. “We are fortunate enough to have her also hire our instructors, manage our classes and also work and manage our front desk.”

Duque explained that Forge Fitness offers flexible plans that meet the varied needs of its clients.

“We know that life is always changing, so we do not require contracts, and we make it easy for you to update or change your membership,” she said.

One of the unique exercise equipment pieces at Forge is a bilateral movement tank sled which allows the user to push and pull without having to turn the tank around.

“It has three levels of resistance which let you match the intensity to the workout you want,” Duque said. “The faster you push, the

harder it pushes back.”

Also at Forge is an assault air bike, and the lateral X elliptical “which allows you the option of moving forward, backward and side to side for realistic sports training and zero impact,” Duque said.

Anyone interested in strength training and nutrition would benefit from Forge’s six-week F5 Refresh program. Duque said it’s a “great option for people who are just getting started or getting back from being out of a regular routine for a while.”

Forge also offers a group fitness program with everything from strength and cardio kickboxing to Zumba and water aerobics classes. “Our instructors are very experienced and love what they do,” Duque said.

Known by Forge’s clientele as The Pool Lady, Leanne Holleman grew up in the swim community and has been active in swimming, pool management and coaching all of her adult life. Davidson said that Holleman “brings great energy and enthusiasm to our aquatics program as

well as some fresh ideas.

“She also does all the aquatics scheduling and is in charge of keeping our pool functioning as it should,” Davidson said.

Holleman explained that Forge’s aquatics instructors can work with all skill levels, and all ages, to “increase comfort in the water and swimming skills.”

“For example, one small group lesson participant would not get in. After talking with the mother, we decided to move her to a (private) lesson with a different instructor who had a different style of teaching,” Holleman said. “She went in right away. Our ability to work with students and adjust instruction styles is helping all ages and levels better themselves in the water.”

Providing food and shelter for people in need

Christian Hope Association is about people. It’s about helping people in need, helping them get back on their feet and in a place where they can again be self-sufficient.

The Lynden organization does that through its two programs: Project Hope Food Bank, and New Way Ministries.

Project Hope Food Bank and New Way Ministries are at 205 S. B.C. Ave., Lynden, the site of the old Christian Health Care Center.

Project Hope Food Bank

Project Hope provides food for people at their immediate point of need. It exists to help foster a strong community held together

by relational ties as people live out a common purpose through participation.

Project Hope works to break the chain of poverty by providing food and assistance to our community. The food bank serves families living within the Lynden School District.

Food distribution hours are from 9:30 a.m. until noon Mondays and Fridays, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesdays. Drive up, hand an attendant your order, and your food will be brought to your car.

With your order form, shoppers can choose the items they want, with quantities based on family size.

Canned fruits and vegetables, sauces and soups are available at the food bank, as are bread, eggs, macaroni and cheese, milk, oatmeal, pastas, potatoes, peanut butter, ramen and rice. Sometimes, cheese is available. Usually, a choice of meat is available, such as

“We also have quite a variety of produce items outdoors, and folks can fill a bag of available items of their choice,” said Don Kok, executive director of Christian Hope Association.

Project Hope gladly accept donations. Canned or dry goods are always appreciated, as are household items such as toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, wipes, Ziploc bags and tin foil.

Project Hope isn’t the only food bank in Whatcom County. But it’s the only food bank to provide community assistance.

“When people in Lynden and surrounding areas are struggling to pay a utility bill, need a partial rent payment, or a voucher for clothing, household goods, or laundry, or for gasoline or propane, we review the situation, and provide assistance as best as we can,” Kok said. “Maybe our best service is to listen, encourage refer,

New Way Ministries

New Way Ministries is a transitional living facility for homeless women and children who may be struggling from addiction, domestic violence, human trafficking, or a crisis pregnancy.

Its mission is to minister to the immediate needs of each woman and child and provide care and counsel in a loving Christian atmosphere.

Shannon Zebrowski, development director and case manager for New Way Ministries, said it is “an honor to serve every woman and child that comes through our doors.”

“We see their value as being beyond measure in the eyes of the Lord,” she said. “Our

mandate is to love. From our night staff offering encouragement to a resident needing some parenting advice, to our case managers helping a mom through her CPS case and getting her children back, to our volunteers who offer childcare or prepare and decorate a room for a new family, we hope that our residents feel dignified, respected, and above all loved as we try to honor God through the work of this ministry.”

Currently, New Way Ministries has 23 family suites or apartments for transitional living accommodations to women who are pregnant or those with children, experiencing homelessness due to challenging circumstances. Zebrowski explained that most residents are coming from situations of domestic violence or struggles with substance addiction.

New Way Ministries has three areas of specialization: Great Expectations, New Way and Next Steps.

Great Expectations serves pregnant women, as well as women with infants. New Way offers communal living with private bedroom(s)/ bathrooms for moms with children. Next Steps is for graduates of the other two programs and contains six independent apartments “for those needing a little extra time before they can manage housing on their own.”

“Our programs offer safety, stability and support as these women work on healing and accomplishing goals that will enable them to be successful parents and providers for their families,” Zebrowski said.

Residents participate in weekly life skills courses and case management sessions. These relationships, Zebrowski said, provide “encouragement, council and advocacy as our residents work hard for the change they desire to experience in their personal situations.”

Vogt’s ‘rewarding’ business helps clients feel at ease

Trey Vogt is heading into his second year as the owner of Lynden Paint and Flooring.

When Trey Vogt became the owner of Lynden Paint and Flooring in September 2020, there wasn’t much left for him to master.

He had spent the previous four years — beginning work under Duane Bode who opened the store in 1980 — since his junior year of high school in 2016 learning everything there was to know about managing the company.

“Before I took over, I was here so long that nothing was new to me except for the paperwork,” Vogt said. “When COVID started …

I was working six days a week alone, so I was used to already being here every day and doing everything, so it wasn’t a huge transition.”

Vogt said Bode’s wife, Betty, is an accountant and she helped him learn the logistical and paperwork side of the business. He then had all the tools he needed for success.

The business didn’t take too much of a hit when the COVID-19 pandemic began, Vogt said. With people at home and looking for something to do, why not begin some home improvements?

“All the building in Lynden has just been crazy,” he said. “The new builds and stuff like that have kept us pretty busy.”

Vogt works Monday through Saturday, hardly ever getting a day off. As a two-person staff, it takes a lot of a vocational motivation

and determination to stay on the ball at all times.

He has thought about bringing in part-time employees but recognizes the complexity that comes with learning the ins-and-outs of different paints and floorings. Vogt said his options would likely be limited to high school students or retirees.

The personal interactions are part of what gives Vogt so much enjoyment in his job. Talking to people and learning about their project to provide the best service possible is what he does best, especially since there are so many options to choose from.

“So many people are so overwhelmed with it. If you look at all the tile, how are you supposed to pick a floor tile?” Vogt said. “It’s really rewarding to help them make that decision and get that.”

As for the process that goes into those decisions, it varies based on the project. Deciding on a floor color can change your idea for a wall color or cabinet color, for example. Choosing where to start is almost always unique to the client and what they are trying to accomplish, Vogt said.

Goal wise, Vogt hopes to shore up his staff with another member and eventually expand his business site by building a warehouse or being able to utilize the basement below. More space would allow him to present the paint and flooring sections of the sales floor in their own, more defined areas.

Much of what Vogt wants to accomplish is in the long-term, but he keeps those ideas close for when the opportunity may arise.

In September 2022 it will be two years since Vogt took over the business. You can bet he will be there ready to help any time you walk into Lynden Paint and Flooring.

Now ventured into short-term and vacation lodging, Lisa had a proposal to Glen: “If you build me a tiny house, I can do it all year long.” He did the project, a 12-foot by 32-foot little sweetie of a three-room suite, and she made it the darling destination she had hoped for. Lisa is proud to say that almost every bit of the building and furnishing was sourced out of hometown Lynden businesses.

“People wanted the experience to be here,” she summarizes, “and it hasn’t really slowed down at all.”

2021 Accommodation Provider of the Year

Oostema Farmstead of Lynden won the Accommodation Provider of the Year award for 2021 from The B&B School founded by Stephanie Thomas. Thomas is a consultant in the United Kingdom that Lisa works with for overall success in the accommodations realm.

the Tiny Farmhouse. Meanwhile, the number of RV sites continued to grow, thanks to Glen’s ongoing work, with six of them having full water, sewer and electrical service. Wifi is available throughout the grounds.

Guest stays can be for a few days or weeks at a stretch, even in winter. And Lisa has gotten used to booking repeat customers from year to year. Positive testimonials come from throughout the region, and beyond.

Lisa is happy to be a tourism booster with her promotion of local attractions, both on the website (https://oostemafarmstead.com) and with displays of brochures in the rooms. She had volunteered earlier at the Lynden Chamber of Commerce, and so knows how a visitor to town can be thinking.

Oostema Farmstead itself is a prime example

of agri-tourism. A thriving garden of flowers and vegetables -- carrots, lettuce, beans, tomatoes -- is a key draw, Lisa is convinced. “The guests actually get to take anything of the garden,” she said.

Looking forward to 2022

Most of the Oostemas’ 117 acres continues to be active in silage corn and berry growing. Beyond just strolling around and taking in the farm ambience, guests can get a tour of the barn and its animals, which include Ruby the red cow, Sylvia the pig and Cher the goat.

A burgeoning enterprise of its own, Glen has taken to raising the Wagyu breed of cattle and selling the high-quality meat. A new cooler and a new freezer will be installed on the farm in 2022.
