he 2018 edition of the Lynden Chamber Directory is an attempt to give visitors and locals alike a unique insight into what Lynden is about, how we as a community got to the place we are, and perhaps share and set some expectations for the next generation or two. It is our hope that it shows how the women of Lynden continue to be a force to be reckoned with, as they were in the past, and as they will be in the future. The leadership and active participation of women in Lynden started with the first woman to call Lynden home, Phoebe Judson. Phoebe, who named Lynden back in 1891, started Lynden’s first school, established Whatcom County’s first college, and housed and operated the first Lynden post office and general store. She did all this and so much more while running her own household. Phoebe’s example left little doubt that women may be different than men, but in no way should they ever be considered lesser than men. Sometimes boldly, sometimes quietly, the women of Lynden continue to be outstanding leaders in industry, education, social life and positive changes in the community. By no means were we able to even scratch the surface of the time, treasure, and talent that the generations of Lynden women have given to make this community such a great place to call home, a fantastic place to visit, and a successful place to do business. The women featured in these pages give the reader just a small glimpse into their lives, their contributions, and their motivation. We honor them because their work honors the Lynden community, and honors the men and women that came before them — and no individual can give more than that. Women of Lynden

Phoebe Judson

Phoebe Judson was just the first to make our community what it is

ven in a steady rain in March 2017, Lynden was finally, and happily, able to dedicate a lifesize statue of famous “Mother of Lynden” Phoebe Judson. She sits on a bench at a prominent spot on Front Street near the Lynden Chamber of Commerce offices. The ultimate goal is for husband Holden — who was first mayor and postmaster, but did not write a book! — to be standing behind Phoebe with his own statue someday. Phoebe was remarkable in her lifespan to age 94. She traveled west on the Oregon Trail in 1853, giving birth to a son along the way in Wyoming as though it were no big deal. The Judson family came up the Nooksack River by Indian canoe in 1870 to live in a log cabin amidst the forest. They watched as many more settlers followed, and Phoebe was the one who

named the growing settlement Lynden, choosing the “y” “because it looked prettier written so.” She compiled her diaries and memories into “A Pioneer’s Search for an Ideal Home,” published shortly before her death in 1925. A big black walnut tree towering over the statue was planted for Phoebe in 1886, as the Judson family’s house (after their cabin) was just a few steps to the east from Sixth Street. Phoebe was likely the first teacher in Lynden — in her home until a proper school was built. She was a force for starting the Northwest Normal School in Lynden, which would evolve into today’s Western Washington University. Phoebe was a midwife to early births in Lynden. She was known to be a

Republican in her politics, while Holden was a Democrat — and they got along! Women continued to have a role in the Lynden story. Many students were influenced over the years by Lynden High School teacher Edna Fisher. Another in education, first as a teacher and then an elementary school principal, Bernice Vossbeck now has one of Lynden’s public elementary schools named after her. Dorothy Koert was a writer and chronicler of Lynden life and customs, also hosting a radio hour in the 1950s and 1960s. Mary LeCocq, beyond being the mayor’s wife, was a Republican state legislator for a term. Born a VanderGriend in Lynden, Claire vg Thomas was a musical talent from youth. She had a career in New York before returning home to help start the Lynden Pioneer Musum, lead countless musical and cultural endeavors, secure a

community theatre and inspire a music festival! Today women play roles in the life of the community in countless ways: as business owners and managers, plant operators, educators across the spectrum, department heads, decision makers. In city government alone, Heidi Gudde is planning director, Hali Harkleroad is a police officer and Tamara Adams runs the city water and wastewater treatment plants. The stories of these and others are woven in the profiles of community life that follow in these pages. Make that 3.5 million pounds of milk to be processed each day — a lot of glasses full.

The milk drying process also generates a byproduct that has earned an apt nickname: COW water. Technically, it’s condensate of whey. This water is so clean by the time it leaves the Lynden Darigold plant that it can be piped directly into the Nooksack River. In the last few years, Lynden has worked out an agreement with the state of Washington to receive water-rights credit for the Darigold COW water returned to the river.

Amanda Hawkins has been managing the 62-person Lynden operation for the past three years. Previously, she was at Darigold’s bottling facility in Medford, Oregon, and she also gained experience with the Tillamook Cheese company in Oregon.

Melissa Bedlington-Kleindel

Gordon’s grandchildern — Melissa BedlingtonKleindel and her brother, Scott Bedlington.

In the early 1970s, Dick Bedlington, Melissa and Scott’s father, purchased the company. The siblings officially took over ownership in 2013. Growing up working for her dad during summer and winter breaks, Melissa, who is the company’s office and shipping manager and handles the financial end of it all, went to school to become a teacher before realizing that wasn’t what she wanted to do.

Melissa’s husband, Nate Kleindel, is the warehouse manager. A niece, Samantha Bedlington, now manages the Pure Potato tissue labs and greenhouses that produce the cleanest, disease-free stock possible for customers. “I’m pretty proud of it,” Bedlington-Kleindel said of the family run business. “I think we have our own unique business, but we can also be family and work together. There are so many of us that we are really hands-on.

So she returned to the business about 21 years ago — and never left.

“It’s fun most days. I don’t really have any complaints and there’s always something new to learn.”

“I learned a good work ethic back in those days,” Melissa said. “In the back of my mind, I always knew I’d end up back here. It’s where I grew up and what I knew.” Scott oversees daily operations, but the family ties to the company don’t stop there.

Gordon Bedlington purchased a small amount of acreage to start the farm over 75 years ago. Today, his grandchildren manage about 3,000 acres of land to produce many varieties of seed potato.

tephanie (Starkenburg) Harvey was working her way through Western Washington University studying secondary education with an emphasis in business. At the same time, she was an assistant manager at a national chain bookstore and also doing a few assigned projects for the family business, Starkenburg & Wiersma Excavating and Gravel. Meanwhile, Whatcom County was working through changes affecting the gravel industry, so Stephanie’s part-time projects grew into a full-time position. The result: She left WWU a year shy of her degree and also quit her part-time bookstore job to work full-time in the family business. It was in 1989 that Stephanie “signed on to the family business.”

Stephanie Harvey “Ten years later, the business partnership had changed and I was able to buy into the company, merging a small venture I had toyed with, Rock Products NW, with Starkenburg & Wiersma Excavating and Gravel and we launched S&W Rock Products as a limited liability partnership between my dad (Alvin Starkenburg) and myself.” Harvey moved into bidding earthwork projects and working with homeowners and developers. “I enjoyed working on private road building, pond designs and general site work projects. When our compost ventures grew, we phased out of that work to better suit the balance of our home and work lives,” she said. Agriculture & Industry Cont.. “I had a passion for gardening, for soil and using manure composts. We were blending different planting soils and I enjoyed spending time in that part of the business. I loved garden shows, culling through nurseries and garden art. I collected stacks of books and articles of yard projects I’d someday accomplish.” Initially, Harvey and her employees composted cow manure and she studied methods and processes to improve the quality and management of their finished products. The local WSU Extension Office provided good learning opportunities and materials for her, she said. “More and more state contracts were focusing on landfill reduction by encouraging the use of yard waste compost in soil materials for state projects,” she said. “My bidding work collided with my

gardening hobbies and I recognized an opportunity for us to possibly compost grass clippings. “My dad had developed relationships with a few folks who had municipal experience in composting. Together, we researched options and started Green Earth Technology, adjacent to a sand pit we own and operate just south of Lynden.” Due to the permitting process for their type of business, which is quite involved, the siting was challenging. While considering locating in Bellingham, the challenge arose to find the right site with zoning for a solid waste handling permit. (It turned out to be right in the same spot Starkenburg & Wiersma had been.) Approximately a dozen people now work for Harvey and family, between the two companies. story continues page 16 »

Now Harvey can say “we’ve been able to do that well.” The shift provided stability during recessionary times — for both the businesses and its employees. Advances in the processing equipment industry were also significant. “Equipment is much more sophisticated,” she said. Business has certainly grown a bit since the earliest days. Nooksack Valley Disposal was the first customer, thanks to the vision of the City of Lynden to collect and recycle yard waste. “We now recycle

over 24,000 ton annually.” Harvey, who has served on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors and parade committees, recently “graduated” from a decade of Lynden Christian School Board service, but she and her husband remain active in their local church. Now that their children are grown, they are “evaluating where God is leading us to serve next.” Harvey gives this advice for women: “Follow the path the Lord has set for you and do that well. We are all equipped with a unique set of gifts, suited to meet different jobs. For over 25 years I’ve been blessed beyond measure in a non-traditional role where I’ve enjoyed developing many relationships.”

urt Maberry Farm harvests nearly 1,000 acres of strawberries, red raspberries and blueberries each year. That impressive production is fueled by a family-run operation that is now into its fourth generation. Today, the business is in the capable hands of the children of the late Curt Maberry, who passed away in 2007. Angie Costanti (Maberry) handles human resources while her brother, Matt Maberry, is the farm’s general manager. The siblings work on the farm year-round, running a business that employs some 450 workers at the peak of harvest, which occurs from June to mid-August. “It can get a little crazy, hiring so many people in such a short amount of time,” said Angie, who graduated from Lynden High School in 1995 and received her bachelor’s degree from Western

Washington University in 2000. She returned to work for the farm after college, holding her current role ever since. Angie said the entire family grew up helping on the farm, working into roles as supervisors and managers. She’s always had a love for sports and even did some coaching in college, but Angie knew she’d always end up back at the farm. “Once it’s is in your blood, it’s hard to get out of it,” Angie said. “I always knew I loved the farm and I’ve always had the passion for being here working with the family.” Angie’s duties include processing and reviewing the mass number of employees needed for the farm. She said that while it’s important for everyone to understand their roles and responsibilities in the company, the family atmosphere provides a supportive work environment.

“We look out after each other and that’s kind of what makes us who we are,” Angie said. “Having such good people here makes a big difference.”

he dean of Lynden cooks just might be Rose DeGroot, who has had her hand in the fixings and doings of the Fairway Cafe since 1962. Her father-in-law, Casey DeGroot, ran the popular Fairway Center eatery before her.

he Mill Bistro & Lounge is a relative newcomer, on the other hand. Robin Hungerford was able to bring her talent in perfectly pairing wine with other foods to the space at the base of Lynden’s downtown Dutch windmill in 2016.

The slogan is “Where friends meet to eat,” and Rose takes those words to heart every time she steps into her restaurant. “I love the people,” she said. “I’m pretty outgoing. I come out on the floor. I introduce myself to new faces if I have never seen them before, or if they’ve been here two or three times.” Not only is Fairway Cafe food a family dining experience — it’s also often catered out. The catering side of the business has grown in recent years, and Rose does it all with her crew in the same kitchen space she has always had. And don’t be surprised if some of those meals Rose prepares go out as gesture of charity to people she has become aware of. 22

Raised in Ventura, California, Robin developed a love for wines that she first channeled as her Perfectly Paired business in Fairhaven before, with husband Matt, coming to his hometown. They are proud to live, dine, work and worship, pursuing their dreams, all in Lynden. The Mill offers meats, cheeses and a variety of wines and unique seasonal cocktails. It is known for its panini and sandwiches, which use bread from the Lynden Dutch Bakery and Avenue Bread.

The calmness of the place brings ease to customers who stop in. It’s no surprise that the visually cohesive displays of flowers, trinkets and knickknacks were put together with an artist’s eye. “I’ve done artwork since I was really little, so I come at this from an artist point of view,” Warren said. She began painting as a young girl. Christa originally hails from Bellingham, earning a degree in art education from Western Washington University. She spent many years teaching art in school to younger children and later taught art classes to all ages and adults. She has experience as a wallpaper hanger as well. But it was while doing renovation work at Dutch Mothers Restaurant of Lynden that she got a foot in the retail door. “We went upstairs and there was this wonderful 28

little space that wasn’t being used,” Warren said. “I said ‘maybe I’ll try retail.’ I had to be pushed a little bit to try it.”

She began in the upstairs location in 2007, starting her new business with consignment work and a lot of connections in the craft world as well as her own work. She remained in the small space for four years before growing out of it and moving into the store’s current location next to Woods in the Fairway Center. In six years there now, she has been assisting the Lynden community. Her focus, she said, is on service. She enjoys sharing her store with the wonderful customers that come to visit — many of whom have become friends. “We are really here to serve people,” Warren said. “And I’m here to really bring beauty into people’s homes and help them find something great as a gift.” Her years of art experience are incorporated into the store in many ways. She crafts floral designs, creates graphics, and even paints some furniture. “People say that the store feels really good and

it’s really peaceful and beautiful and well designed with lots of color,’” Warren said. “Rather than coming at it from a business point of view, that’s kind of what I bring to it.”

icole Smiley has a diverse set of responsibilities as general manager of Advantage Sports. The offshoot embroidery company of the Soccer City sports supply business keeps Smiley on her toes. “I kind of do everything. I do sales. I manage all the employees,” Smiley said in an upbeat tone. “My job is very versatile, which is very exciting.” Originally from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Nicole relocated to the area after marrying her husband, business owner Drew Smiley. Their enterprise is in a warehouse off Nooksack Avenue. Nicole originally had intentions of a career in accounting. But her first taste of the financial field out of high school in an office setting prompted

her to switch her area of study to child and youth care counselling. The accounting atmosphere wasn’t for her.

“I figured out that you’re kind of quiet when you work in accounting,” Smiley said of her career path choice. “I kind of get the best of both worlds now. I get to work with customers and work with accounting stuff.” After getting her degree, marrying and having children, she switched over to helping with the business. “And from there I have just gotten more and more involved,” Smiley said. The business routine of solving problems, managing employees and working with diverse clients from different backgrounds keeps Smiley happy. “I love the interactions I get to have with people now.” She appreciates the relationships she’s been able to develop, both with her employees and customers. “I love them and there’s not one day I take for granted how awesome they are,” she said. “They make our business great.”

Bernice Vossbeck

ernice Vossbeck has left a long legacy with Lynden schools. An elementary school on East Bridgeview Drive bears the longtime resident’s name in honor of her 33 years of educational contributions. She landed her first teaching job at the old Lynden Grade School right out of college in the 1940s. She had earned a degree from the Western Washington College of Education, and was working on her master’s thesis from Clark University in Massachusetts.

“I’ve always loved children,” Vossbeck said. “They’re wonderful. You never know what to expect.” After 20 years of classroom teaching, Vossbeck was appointed principal of Fisher Elementary School in Lynden. She was in this administrative role for 12 years until retiring. Years later, Vossbeck got a surprise phone call. “They wanted to name the (new) elementary school after me,” Vossbeck said. “I said ‘let me think about it.’ My children urged me to take it, and I did.”

“When I graduated, there were very few openings for women,” Vossbeck said. “They had a choice to be a nurse, a teacher or a secretary, and I chose teaching.”

She has now spent many years volunteering at the school that bears her name — first with children, but as she began to lose her hearing, she switched over to volunteering in the library.

New classes in criminal justice, banking and investing, entrepreneurship, mathematics, and biotechnology let students dabble in different fields before deciding on their next stage of education. “When you’re 14 and a freshman and don’t really have a lot of life experience, you don’t know necessarily what you want to do or don’t want to do,” Nilsen said. “That’s our job, to help kids have opportunities and experiences that will allow them to make the best choices for what their talents and gifts are to give back to the community.”

ynden Christian High School teacher Taylor VanderYacht is leading a new wave of educators in Lynden.

The daughter of two teachers in the community, she returned here newly married and in search of employment after graduating from Whitworth University in Spokane. “I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she says of her upbringing. “By the time I came back, I was hoping and praying there was an opening in Lynden.” In her first year at LC, she brings a sense of exuberance, fresh eyes, and her own take on the English language. Her assignments may have a deeper meaning than

is readily apparent. “I do my best to incorporate good reading and writing skills into bigger-picture ideas,” she said. “That is what my heart is for.” One project, Humans of Lynden — modeled after the popular social media page Humans of New York — instructs students to find someone to interview. “(The task) is about storytelling and writing,” VanderYacht said. “But it’s a lot more about empathy and understanding.” She said these kinds of lessons are invaluable for students as they grow into being adults, a transition she made not too long ago. She views her young age of 23 as a benefit. She may not have as much experience as others in her department, but she is easily able to relate

to her students. “I think it’s beneficial to be able to say, ‘I’ve been in your position and I know how you’re feeling,’” VanderYacht said. And because of her own Lynden High School experience being busy in extracurriculars such as FFA and ASB, she places more emphasis on classroom learning than homework. “I don’t want them to have to go home and to be struggling through it alone,” she said. “There is some homework, but I value their time with family and I value their time outside of school. I just expect them to work as hard as they can when they’re here with me.”

The negative issues facing local business do not appear to come from individual business relationships, but from our failure to collectively work together to ensure that resources are in place for our small-town, rural and resource-based lifestyle to continue. “The community needs to rally behind and support the local businesses that form the fabric of our local economy and contribute to the lifestyle we enjoy in the north county.” During college while Kroontje worked in the Whatcom County Public Defender’s Office, the attorneys there encouraged her to pursue legal

training. After considering how intense criminal defense is, she chose to pursue land use as the Washington State Growth Management Act had just passed and the playing field was level for both experienced and new legal practitioners, she said. Since her family was engaged in “resource industries,” including minerals, agriculture and forestry, she felt comfortable fitting into that specialty. Most of her work day is spent meeting with clients, researching issues and drafting and reviewing documents. “My job is to ascertain what a client is seeking to accomplish and determine how to meet their objectives.”

wonderful program offered by the Lynden Chamber of Commerce is the Welkom Basket. This program was put in place to welcome new residents to town and is a great tool for them to get to know their new home. Each basket is filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses and is personally delivered to the residents by our wonderful Lynden Ambassadors, Virgi Diephuis and Ada Voskuilen. During their visits, Virgi and Ada share about Lynden, and also take that time to get to know each new family, giving us the ability to discover why they moved here, and what they are looking for. This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in helping us make the families feel welcome, and it is also the chance for the new residents to get to know Lynden and be reminded why this is such a great place to live. It also gives our members a chance to get information about their business out to the community in a fun and inviting way.
