Coldstream Farms is model of Whatcom dairy innovation Technology for conversion of manure into useful solids, clean water has been proven

(Coldstream Farms Facebook/@ColdstreamFarm9)

By Calvin Bratt For the Tribune    LYNDEN — Let’s be right up-todate with what’s affecting a dairy farm these days. As the price of fuel rises at the neighborhood pump, so it rises by the tanker load to a place like Coldstream Farms.    Just 18 months ago, a diesel delivery to the South Fork Valley dairy in Whatcom County cost $10,100. In March 2022 the price was $33,750 – “brutal” is the word for it, according to the farm’s Facebook page. It costs $765 to fill up a tractor!    Of course, Coldstream is a big operation. The number of cows on the sprawling farm is around 1,700, their milk production averaging 85 pounds per day. Milking is in a 50-stall rotary parlor. Over 1,500 acres of crops must be planted, tended and harvested. Corn silage is measured in the thousands of tons. All the work keeps a crew of 20 busy.    One aspect of the farm that has garnered plenty of attention since 2018 is the handling of the manure that is generated. That’s because the job has Page 2

been done right, using technology that is cutting-edge in filtering out all useable solids and producing 12,000 gallons of clean water daily. An article by the Whatcom Land Trust explains more:    “In partnership with Regenis, a Whatcom County-based agricultural waste solutions company, Coldstream was awarded a $930,305 grant from the Washington State Conservation Commission to evaluate innovative membrane technology which will turn manure into non-toxic products for reuse on the farm or to be sold to other markets. Nothing in the process will be wasted or discarded. The clean water membrane technology system (uses) reverse osmosis and nano-filtration to separate cow manure into chemicalfree fertilizer and clean, dischargeable water.”    Other partners were involved. Although the purified water is good for cows’ drinking and for irrigating crops, Whatcom County Public Utility District No. 1 and the Washington State Department of Ecology cleared permits for the new Coldstream water to be released to the nearby South Fork of the Nooksack

River as well. The effort to protect and recycle natural resources has become an all-around win for the dairy.    “Our goal is to use every resource on our farm and let nothing go to waste,” says Galen Smith, who has been directing operations for the last 20 years of growth and innovation. “Better before bigger” is a motto for each step along the learning curve.    With sustainability as the goal, 2012 was a year of major renovation and expansion of the farm to be ready for future growth. “By focusing on recycling, automation, creating zero waste and reducing our impacts on the environment, we are able to maintain a thriving business model and grow to meet market demand,” Smith told the land trust. Those technologies included a more efficient enclosed feed facility, an automated rotary milking parlor, a manure drying system and a heat exchanger.    The land trust, striving for responsible environmental stewardship, leases several of its properties to Coldstream, mostly used to grow hay. One 54-acre parcel with a stream running through it, even with regular farming, 2021 DHIA Annual Report

is protected for Coho salmon habitat, an example of farm and fish coexisting well together.    It so happens that in March 2022 the manure filtration system at Coldstream has been shut down, not because it doesn’t work but because the input costs at a particular point in the process have become prohibitive. “We’ve been able to prove the technology works,” Smith said. “The unit is all here.” And he believes that one more step of technology, such as a centrifuge or manure digester, can be the ticket to getting back on track. “We’re constantly looking at other technologies and opportunities.”    Smith’s father-in-law, Jeff Rainey, bought the original piece of property in the picturesque South Fork Valley back in 1978. He was in fact out of dairying for five years as a participant in the federal whole-herd buyout of 1986, but then returned to the livelihood as soon as he could. He missed it. Now two of

the Raineys’ daughters, Laura Smith and Lynne Rainey and their husbands, plus Galen’s brother Brad Smith, are also partners in Coldstream, bringing their specialties to the operation. Meanwhile the extended family is absorbing the values that go along with the rural lifestyle: involvement in 4-H and FFA, school and sports activities, and other community service as well. Rainey served two terms on the Darigold company board of directors. Galen Smith currently sits on the governing boards of the CHS Northwest cooperative and the Whatcom Family Farmers group.    Both local companies Cargill and EPL get credit for grain supply and other things feed-related for the dairy herd. A years-long relationship exists with All West Select Sires for the breeding needs of the farm. The salesmen and evaluators of All West “know the direction we want to go, and they let me know what’s happening in the industry

… I can’t afford to be status quo,” Smith said. Likewise, he relies upon the herd health expertise of Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, the agronomy experts at CHS Northwest and the milking equipment help at Daritech. Don’t leave out the consultation of Peoples Bank and Larson Gross accounting. And for all details of milk production, especially the somatic cell count that must be closely watched, Coldstream has depended on the numbers from DHIA across many years. It seems that all of these are brought regularly into the huddle as “team players,” Smith said.    Although the challenges never end, from making decisions about cows and crops to managing a workforce and helping chart a future for the dairy industry, Coldstream intends to be a positive force working hard to make it all happen in one corner of Whatcom County.
