Next generation buys into Bogaard Hay Ryan Bogaard, Kevin Greiner bring their trucking and hay buying experience

By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com LYNDEN ­— The ownership of Bogaard Hay Company has been transferred to a next generation.

Effective March 1, Ryan Bogaard and Kevin Greiner took over as owners from second-generation brothers Gordon and and Phil Bogaard, who had taken over from their dad, Andrew Bogaard, around 1980.

“It’s been good. It’s treated us well,” said Phil of the business that has been both his and Gord’s lifetime commitment.

However, in now about 40 years of the brothers at the helm, “things have changed drastically and that’s why the next generation (comes in),” he said.

He said he is just happy that both Ryan and Kevin were interested in owning to allow a transition of the business to happen.

And the two new owners are eager for the challenge.

Ryan Bogaard, a son of Phil, has been and continues to be involved as a hay buyer in Moses Lake, where he lives.

Greiner has been a logistics coordinator with LTI Inc. trucking of Lynden, responsible for the team of people who do the milk hauling from local farms.

“I joke with everyone that I just went to the other end of the cow,” Greiner said.

He grew up in eastern Washington and began his time with LTI there, then came to Lynden 10 years ago. He and his wife, Michelle, have an 18-monthold son.

Greiner admits it was really a “cold call” on his part to the Bogaards as to whether they were interested in selling the business. Their first face-to-face meeting was in January 2019, and the positive steps proceeded from there, also including Ryan. “It’s really exciting,” he said, as he can bring his experience in farm-related trucking to this Page 2

new venture.

In truth, being part of the family business has been a dream from his boyhood, said Ryan Bogaard in an email.

As a kid he progressed from sweeping floors in the Lynden shop to washing trucks and trailers and unloading small bales. Then it was working as a mechanic. When he got his driving CDL, he could deliver hay loads to Whatcom farms.

The opportunities to learn the business grew.

“I wanted to try driving east of the mountains and ended up doing that full-time for almost three years. I knew that if one day I wanted to be an owner I would need to learn more of the business. I had the opportunity to start coming to the eastside with my uncle Gord and start learning about and buying hay. A year after that I decided to pack up and move to Moses Lake so I could be more involved on this side with the buying of the hay. This year will be my 15th year with the company and I am excited for the future of company,” he wrote.

Bogaard Hay has a yard with a small shop in Moses Lake. Some drivers also live over there.

“We have a great group of employees and we plan to keep business as usual like it was before Kevin and I

came on as owners and make it an easy transition for them,” Ryan Bogaard said.

He and new partner Greiner, and their supportive young families, are getting to know each other better through this transition process.

“I feel like I have been blessed by God with this opportunity as one of the new owners,” Ryan said. “We have our work cut out for us, and we both want to see BHC grow, while still maintaining great customer service and quality hay for the dairy industry.”

Both Phil and Gord Bogaard themselves can remember going through the similare experiences of unloading hay and driving truck before coming into the Main Street yard office to run operations.

Across the whole span since founding by their dady around 1960, Bogaard Hay Inc. has mainly supplied dairy farmers of Whatcom County with their eastern Washington alfalfa needs.

“I’m staying on as long as they want me,” Phil said, which he expects to be one to two years.

He’s seen 40 years of veterinary change Gale DeJong is wrapping up a career at the Kulshan facility

By Elizabeth Kayser elizabeth@lyndentribune.com LYNDEN ­ — Kulshan Veterinary Hospital is celebrating its 70th anniversary of being a local veterinary service for both small and large animals.

Also, Kushan veterinarian Gale DeJong is celebrating his 40th year of being with the clinic — and his last.

DeJong started in 1980.

In 1950 Ernie and Virginia Streets purchased a vet clinic in Lynden and made it their own, both of them being veterinarians. Operating out of a house on Front Street, they named their place Streets Veterinary Hospital.

In 1971 the Streets sold the practice and the name was changed to Kulshan. It still operated for a few years out of the residence before moving to the corner of Front and 19th streets,

where Lynden Veterinary is now, specializing in pets.

DeJong was at that location when he began. It wasn’t as populated a neighborhood as it is now.

In 1992 a 10-acre piece property at Badger and Benson roads was bought for building a new facility. It was the perfect transition for the future, moving out more toward farms on the edge of Lynden. Kulshan was becoming much more focused on large animals anyway.

“It was about 85% large animals and 15% small,” DeJong recalls.

When he started, Whatcom County had more than 500 dairy herds, and that was a large part of what Kulshan did, as well as a lot of work on horses.

At first, the surrounding area to their new facility was farmland. Slowly but surely, the area nearby was developed by Homestead into homes and a golf course. With the increased housing came more and more pets, and the focus of the clinic saw a big shift.

As Lynden is now home to nearly 15,000 people, DeJong guesses the Kulshan ratio has changed to about 25% large animals and 75% small.

There are fewer than 90 dairies in the county now.

“Even more are selling,” he said, “and that brings a lot of sadness in me that our producers can’t make a living.”

Change can bring sadness, DeJong knows, but it can also be fun and Continued on page 8

exciting.

In 2011 Kulshan remodeled its current facility to adjust to the changes. The lobby area was redone to help with the flow of clients coming in. More exam rooms were added for the small animals, a separate entrance for large animals.

In 2017 Kulshan expanded into Ferndale, with a clinic off Portal Way. It is just for small animals, and veterinarians rotate shifts there.

Technology has also changed.

Kulshan now has its own lab diagnostics area, for examining samples from animals in-house instead of sending them out.

DeJong says the advance of veterinary technology since he started is pretty amazing. X-rays, ultrasounds and surgeries have all developed and are within the capability of Kushan to do.

“Old x-ray machines are archaic,” DeJong said. “We can now do so much more. It really helps with diagnostics.”

DeJong has spent his career mostly caring for dairy cows. He says when he first started, almost every dairy farm had a bull on premises for breeding.

But as technology has advanced, he watched dairymen change to using artificial insemination.

In terms of overall veterinary outlook, DeJong said he likes to see changes that extend animals’ life spans and reduce pain.

“Egg collection technology has advanced to where (cows’) lives aren’t affected,” DeJong said. “That excites me.”

Having spent so much time working with dairy cows that can weigh 1,300 pounds, DeJong has experienced some “wear and tear.”

He’s had to undergo two surgeries for a shoulder rotator cuff, one just from overuse and one after a dairy cow kicked him when he wasn’t expecting it.

Earlier in his time at Kulshan, there wasn’t much of a separation be-

tween the large- and small-animal vets, but by now two different teams have developed.

There are other changes too.

“In the 1950s it was probably 95% men and 5% women,” DeJong said.

“Women now makeup about 80% of vets.” He tips his hat to the women who really set the stage for those changes to happen.

DeJong has enjoyed being a vet.

He believes it to be a respected profession and he doesn’t think that will change. “I have enjoyed the trust and acceptance from the public,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to be a lifelong learner.”

Certainly in being a veterinarian today, more specialities are available.

In 2020 DeJong’s share of the Kulshan clinic is for sale, to join four other partners-owners. He plans to spend the rest of this year being a consultant and coach to the younger vets there.
