Lynden Heritage Museum celebrates 50

years

Lynden is marking history again in 2026.

Fi ty years ago, in 1976, the nation was celebrating its bicentennial. And in the spirit of the time, Lynden people stepped up to create a museum to preserve their own local slice of history.

From the beginning, the museum was a grassroots e ort of homespun ﬂavor — by the community and for the community, says current director Jennifer Maas.

“From its earliest days, local residents recognized the importance of preserving Lynden’s agricultural roots, immigrant stories, businesses and family histories before they were lost to time,” Maas says of the museum.

The museum began with limited space and resources, yet with an abundance of passion.

Volunteers, donors, and early leaders poured their energy and ability into what the visitor can see today, knowing this was about identity as much as artifacts. And that same spirit of community stewardship prevails today, Maas said.

Some things do change, of course. In 2023, the name on the door at 217 Front St. went from Lynden Pioneer Museum to Lynden Heritage Museum to reﬂect a reshaping for broad representation of the community, from the past into the future.

The impetus in 1976 came from a rather unique situation.

Lynden farmer Fred K. Polinder, by now in his 80s, had in his lifetime assembled an amazing collection of horse-drawn buggies, numbering

at least 42. He was donating these relics to the City of Lynden — that is, if a suitable place could be found to house and display them.

It so happened that a solid brick building was available on Front Street. It had been the home of the North Washington Implement Co., seller of tractors and farm equipment since 1917. The City of Lynden would buy the two-story site for $71,000 from the estate of John D. Spaan (Mrs. Polinder’s brother), who had co-founded the company.

In June 1976, Mayor Jim Van Andel ceremonially accepted a big key from o cers of trustee Rainier Bank as a sign that the ﬁnancial transfer had taken place.

Van Andel appointed an overall museum committee of 22 members, with Lynden’s Bill Swinburnson as committee chair. There were three subgroups, one on acquisitions to receive other o ers of items for a local museum. Another group dealt with any adjustments of

the building to turn it into a museum, and it was decided to leave the sturdy structure essentially as it was. A third group headed up publicity and education.

Shelley Smit, only 18 at the time, was one of the appointees. Smit looks back now remembering the Lynden bicentennial and museum founding as “the best of times … fantastic” as she worked with others much older than herself in creating historical remembrances.

While the bicentennial celebration came and went, the museum e ort took longer. It had started in late 1975, but it wasn’t until November 1977 that the new museum building opened to the public, more than a year a ter the city took ownership of it.

Another of the museum committee members was George Young, retired from a career as a Border Patrolman and now bringing his historical interest along with handyman skills. He, as curator, would become a driving force in the early development of the museum.

A huge addition, literally, came to the museum in 1979. From an old warehouse being dismantled on the Bellingham waterfront, massive roof trusses were available to Lynden. Using them more than doubled the size of the museum into space immediately to the east. The exterior walls were done in brick to match seamlessly with the older structure.

Construction men such as Hank Jansen and Larry Strengholt got involved, with crews and equipment, to

make it happen. With its basement level, this addition created the nearly 30,000 square feet of total ﬂoor space the museum enjoys today.

In the 1980s George Young got busy in the new half, creating a mockup of Lynden Front Street business storefronts of an earlier era: Pioneer Press, City Drug, Lynden Department Store, and millinery, clock and barber shops. Year a ter year, Young kept building away on the old-style structures of the eastern half, including

a mezzanine level circling the whole area and adding more display and o ce capacity.

This memory lane of businesses continues to be one of the most immersive and beloved parts of the museum, Maas said.

Troy Luginbill ﬁrst came to the museum as a Western Washington University intern in 1993, then stayed 28 years as curator and director. He believes it was the ideas and energy of Lynden people themselves that carried along the Lynden Pioneer Museum into new ventures and projects.

Luginbill himself raised the proﬁle of the museum by doing history talks, publishing photo books, and starting a Lynde 500 fundraiser of pushcart racing each Labor Day.

Amanda May took over as museum director and curator in early 2022. In her three-plus years in charge, May helped

guide the museum through a rebranding, structural remodels, maintenance repairs, new exhibits and ﬂoor rearrangements.

Today, Denny DeMeyer is president of the nine-member board of directors. Also, an Endowment Foundation builds up ﬁnancial support of the museum.

“Like any historic institution, change has been necessary to ensure long-term sustainability, but those earlier programs helped cement the museum as an active, living place rather than a static one,” Maas said.

The past ﬁve years have been especially transformative, preparing the museum for its next 50 years, the director said.

• October — Mystery at the Museum, with a storyline on the history of the museum and the Lynden community.

• Archiving system tracks both objects and photographs

• The Young Historians Program, free admission for under-18

A goal in this 50th anniversary year is to complete a Heritage Library, budgeted at $10,000–$15,000. It will bring together historical reference books, photographs and records into a single, welcoming space that the community can visit during open hours.

Funding remains the museum’s greatest challenge, Maas said. The goal is to keep admission and events a ordable. The museum prides itself on being e cient and prudent with every dollar received, she said.

Volunteers help run key Lynden organizations

For Merrillee Scoﬁeld, volunteerism began with the Welkom Basket she received when she moved to Lynden roughly eight years ago.

The person who dropped o the basket of goodies asked if she would care to volunteer at the Lynden Chamber of Commerce.

Scoﬁeld said yes.

“I thought it would be interesting, even though I didn’t know all that was involved, or where everything was in this town myself yet,” she said.

Scoﬁeld looked back recently and explained she was “so pleasantly surprised” when she began to volunteer at the chamber.

“The employees at the Chamber are always there to help us with any questions we may have and do it so graciously,” she said.

Scoﬁeld is one of about a half-dozen people who volunteer regularly at the Lynden Chamber. Melissa VanLoo, the chamber’s member services coordinator, said volunteers serve about 780 hours each year with various

activities and functions so chamber sta “can do as they need to do.”

“Our Lynden Chamber volunteers warmly greet visitors who walk into our Lynden Visitor’s Center on a daily basis,” Van Loo said.

Volunteers greet people in the o ce, answer calls and direct them if necessary, Van Loo explained. They also clean, ﬁll brochure racks and help put things together for events.

“They answer a wide variety of questions both in person and over the phone about Lynden and the surrounding Whatcom County area,” Van Loo said. “They o er their own expertise to newcomers and visitors.”

O ce volunteers save the Lynden Chamber approximately $11,000 each year.

A volunteer, as deﬁned by the Cambridge Dictionary, is someone who o ers to do something they do not have to do, o ten without having been asked to do it — and they do it without expecting payment.

One reason Scoﬁeld enjoys volunteering is that she gets to meet and have conversations with people from di erent cities, states and countries.

“The people that come in are usually happy as they are on vacation or just visiting an adorable small town like Lynden, and want to know all about it,” Scoﬁeld said. “I have learned a lot more about the little town of Lynden since I have volunteered at the chamber as well. Of course I love the people at the chamber I work with, they have become like family to me.”

Sue Richmond also has volunteered at the Lynden Chamber for about eight years. Before she retired, she lived what she calls a “high-energy life.”

“I needed something to do,” Richmond said. “Volunteering at the Lynden Chamber is one of them. I love people. I love to talk, people are so interesting, their stories are all so di erent.”

Richmond explained that Lynden is “a very unique town, small enough for community, yet big enough for growth and business.”

“Visitors have all sorts of questions and I get to share my story about life here and the fascinating aspects of Lynden,” Richmond said. “Visitors are also unique, coming from di erent cultures, ethnicities and ideologies that make conversation very interesting. This is a fun way to use my retirement time.”

It’s been three years since Ruth Reimer began to volunteer at the Lynden Chamber. With her husband having recently passed away, Reimer said she “needed something to do.” So she decided to volunteer where her daughter works.

“The day I volunteer there’s extra bookkeeping I like to help with,” Reimer said. “I like to help [my daughter Melissa VanLoo] when she needs help.”

Reimer was raised to give back to her community. She’s also a people person.

“I love to be around people,” Reimer said. “You live and learn with people. The people here are fun to work with. You greet them as if they are guests to your home.”

Keeping record of Lynden’s history

New to volunteering at the Lynden Heritage Museum, David Bolden is well known in local theater. That’s how he got to know the museum’s executive director, Jennifer Maas.

Both on stage in a recent Claire Theater production, Bolden said Maas “reached out to me, asked if I had any time available” to volunteer.

“Mondays are my slowest day, so I do 1-4 p.m.,” he said.

“Been doing it since September.”

Bolden enjoys working with the museum’s sta and volunteers — and also with the other docents.

“Everyone here is so fun, such great people,” Bolden said. “The volunteers, we’ve had them here from all over the world. They get a taste of our community. That’s fun stu .”

Of the museum’s many exhibits, Bolden includes the antique vehicles downstairs among his favorites.

“Some of my favorite stu ,” he said.

Bolden is one of more than two dozen people who volunteer their time at the Lynden Heritage Museum. According to Maas, the museum’s volunteers are

indispensable.

“They’re the backbone that keeps our doors open, infuses our space with warmth and knowledge, and enables us to fulﬁll our mission of preserving history for future generations without straining our budget,” she said. “Their passion turns routine operations into meaningful connections with visitors.”

Maas explained that museum volunteers primarily serve as docents and greeters at the welcome desk “where they warmly welcome all guests, check in visitors, accept admissions and guide them through our exhibits.”

The museum works its volunteer docents in pairs, in four-hour shi ts. In addition to working the front desk, volunteers assist with seasonal events, fundraisers and free community programs. Maas said the museum’s volunteers “ensure we can host a full calendar of events that engage the community, from educational tours to holiday open houses.”

Based on the museum’s scheduling, volunteers contribute about 2,080 hours annually to help ﬁll operational needs and keep the museum accessible. And that doesn’t count hours spent volunteering for events and programming above their committed schedules.

Maas estimated that paying someone to work the scheduled volunteer hours would cost the museum an estimated $35,630 per year, based on Washington’s 2026 minimum wage.

“Without our volunteers, the museum would face signiﬁcant challenges in maintaining our seven-daya-week schedule,” Maas said. “Relying solely on paid sta would make it di cult to cover all shi ts a ordably, likely resulting in reduced hours, occasional closures, or limited access for visitors.”

Further, the ability to host seasonal events, school groups and hands-on heritage activities would diminish, and tasks such as collection preservation and exhibit setup would slow down.

“Ultimately, the museum would feel less vibrant and community-driven, as volunteers bring personal stories and local insights that enrich every visit,” Maas said.

Beyond the museum, Maas said volunteers play a key role in fostering a sense of pride and continuity.

“By sharing stories of our pioneer roots, agricultural heritage and local milestones, they help educate

residents and strengthen community bonds,” she said. “In a town like Lynden, where history is woven into everyday life, our volunteers ensure that heritage remains alive and accessible, inspiring all ages to appreciate and contribute to our shared story.”

This year the Lynden Heritage Museum celebrates 50 years. For the past two years, Greg Rice has been one of the museum’s volunteer docents. Monday mornings you can see him in the museum, also on Saturdays and when the museum needs someone to ﬁll in.

“It’s good to have someone to show the exhibits,” Rice said. “It’s very satisfying, encouraging, able to tell people about the museum and answer questions. I think you have to know your history to know where you’re going.”

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9301 brings together combat veterans to continue the brotherhood instilled during their times of service.

“It’s not just any veterans,” VFW Post Commander Steven Monroe said of his elite group.

These veterans have been tested in combat during their service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, the war on global terror and other peace-keeping expeditions.

The organization dates back to 1899 with veterans from the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection when veterans

came home wounded and sick and le t to care for themselves as there was no medical care or pension. These veterans bonded together and by 1936 membership grew to almost 200,000 across several states.

The mission of the VFW is “to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead; and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and ﬁdelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to

preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies.”

Members meet at the hall on the second Tuesday of each month. They can also be found during community events, such as in local parades. Monroe said they typically serve as the color guard, but for the ﬁrst time in 2025 they rode in a decorated transport truck in the Lighted Christmas Parade.

“We have a number of ways we like to give and celebrate with the community,” Monroe said.

For example, they recognize students through essay winners and the group selects a ﬁreﬁghter, teacher and police o cer to recognize each year.

“We recognize the great things they have done for the community,” Monroe said.

He said during his tenure as commander he wants to continue to experiment with ways to get more involved in the community.

“One of my goals as the commander is to connect with the community,” he said. “It’s all about giving back to the community that supports us.”

Many VFW members are from the Vietnam era and Monroe said he hopes to draw in younger veterans by creating a combat-tested gaming lounge for members to enjoy.

“It creates a more relaxed atmosphere,” he said.

This atmosphere is meant to get veterans comfortable and to speak with others about their experience or whatever may be on their mind.

“We’re building a safe space,” Monroe said.

The VFW Hall is more than a place for combat veterans to come together. It is also available for rent by the community.

“It’s very common for the hall to be rented out,” Monroe said.

The hall is the perfect gathering place for a small wedding or birthday. It also houses a church on Sundays.

InPlay Golf brings 24/7 access to unlimited fairways

InPlay Golf opened its doors in Lynden in October and the indoor golf facility provides a cutting-edge experience for local golfers looking to escape the weather and access loads of virtual courses any day and time of the week.

“We call it a premium indoor golf experience,” owner Chad Baron said. “We’ve got the top-of-the-line simulator.”

InPlay is powered by Trackman, a ball tracking and swing analyzing so tware that’s

used by pros and amateurs to track swing data like club speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, apex and landing position.

Casual players might not be interested in all the advanced metrics, but InPlay o ers a unique experience for any level of player. With their simulator, you can explore golf courses from around the world while avoiding crowded tee times and rainy fairways.

“I thought it would be a great thing for the

community,” Baron said. “We don’t have Homestead open anymore, so I know there’s a lot of golfers that have to drive at least 20 minutes out of town to play. We also don’t have to have weather where you can golf year round.”

InPlay’s 24/7 access makes it the most accessible golf option near Lynden. Players can book a tee time for an hourly rate of $45 for a group of up to four players. Six players may play at one bay, but additional players are $11 each.

Memberships are also available for as low as $160 a month in the par tier of membership that o ers unlimited bookings for a solo player for one-hour tee times. The birdie tier is $229 a month and comes with three guest passes for two-hour tee times. The highest tier of membership is the eagle tier for $367 a month and features two membership accounts that can book two active tee times with four guest passes and has three-hour long tee times.

There are two simulators inside the facility for use. There’s a lounge with snacks, seating and a bathroom to ensure however long you stay swinging it’ll be a good time.

You can choose to play a variety of games through their simulators computer to up the fun past playing on a normal course. And don’t worry if you forgot your clubs because InPlay o ers a selection of free irons to use while you play, both le t-handed and right-handed.

InPlay is the perfect getaway from the non-golﬁng months in the Paciﬁc Northwest due to rain and chilly wind. Rather than freezing outside, you can relax indoors and listen to music while you have fun and improve your game.

To up the competition, InPlay o ers leagues and tournaments where winners can earn prizes competing against other players at InPlay. It’s all virtually tracked and you compete on your own schedule.

“It’s just another fun way to get out, play with friends and compete with other people,” Baron said. “They’re a free thing that people can be a part of for some friendly competition and an opportunity to play

courses from around the world.”
