If you’re a Lynchburg City resident in need of financial assistance to participate in Parks & Recreation programs, you and your family members may qualify for a scholarship. Applications are available on our website, at any of our community centers, or at our office at Miller Center. Applications must be submitted in-person, before you register, and 5 business days prior to a registration deadline.

Dear Lynchburgers: Have you ever thought about what makes a community special? A vibrant parks and recreation department that enriches the lives of everyone in the community is at the top of the list. Did you know that businesses looking to locate in an area consider quality parks and recreation services one of two top priorities, along with excellent schools? In keeping with this, Lynchburg Parks and Recreation was recently recognized by city leadership as a core city service. We are an “essential” city function.

Our mission is to contribute to a healthy, active and educated community, providing stewardship and management of parklands, trails and civic facilities, and creating opportunities for everyone to participate in a wide variety of recreational activities. We do this by providing great trails, parks and neighborhood centers and comprehensive recreation programs.

The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department provides immeasurable benefits to our citizens. Our parks and trails provide the community with opportunities to be physically active. Physical activity is a major combatant against the obesity epidemic. Parks and trails also provide vital green space. The ability of green spaces like Blackwater Creek Bike Trail to significantly improve the physical and mental health of our citizens is just one example of how our department improves quality of life.

True economic benefits also are generated by Lynchburg’s parks. Trails and parks increase property values, especially if the property is adjacent to a natural area. The economic impact that sports tournaments, competitions and special events hosted in public parks bring to the local economy can offset costly park maintenance and administrative costs, among other things.

As the second largest land owner in the City of Lynchburg, with more than 900 acres of parkland, we consider land stewardship and natural area preservation of momentous importance. Our parks conserve green spaces and they preserve wetlands and wildlife habitats. Protecting trees is especially significant, because they provide shade and clean the air we breathe. In the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that urban trees remove 75,000 tons of air pollutants annually.

The City of Lynchburg takes its pillars of safety, revitalization of City neighborhoods and social equity very seriously.

Community recreation programs and services remove barriers that can limit opportunities. Handicapped-accessible facilities, affordable programming, free park amenities, ADA-compliant walking trails, upgraded neighborhood centers and direct-mailed program guides are all examples of how the City’s leaders strive to make Lynchburg a great place to live, work and play for everyone.

Our latchkey and drop-in programs provide a refuge for at-risk youth. Experts say crime by and against minors soars from 3 to 7 p.m. (after school), and according to a 2010 study, every dollar spent on after-school programming saved, on average, $6 in crime, court and detention costs. This is why our summer camps, open gyms and after-school programs are so essential.

Community recreation programs provide a social outlet and a way to connect people. Studies reveal that loneliness is an epidemic more deadly than smoking and obesity. That’s what makes places like Templeton Senior Center and events like “spaghetti night” at our neighborhood centers so vital. Our parks and neighborhood centers are the glue that brings together and binds the community.

Lynchburgers love their parks, historic sites, trails, community market and neighborhood centers because they bring joy and pleasure to everyone. Not only is parks and recreation an essential city service but a necessity for improving quality of life.

Please continue to recognize and support our department’s efforts to make Lynchburg a great place to live, work and play.

Let’s Visit Nelson County

Ages 18 + Were you a fan of the television show, The Waltons? Join us for a trip to Nelson County, Virginia, where you can see the Walton’s homeplace, Ike Godsey’s store, and the Waltons Mountain Museum.

Eat lunch at the family-operated Lovingston Café, then travel to visit historic Pharsalia for a tour of the 1800’s plantation and gardens.

The meet up and drop off location is at the Miller Center parking lot.

Ages 21 + Join us for an afternoon brew tour in beautiful Nelson County, home of the Virginia craft beer revolution. We will provide transportation to four different breweries (Devils Backbone, Wild Wolf, Blue Mountain, Bold Rock Cidery), photos in front of the beautiful backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, road snacks, and fun company. Participants must be 21 or over and will be responsible for purchase of their own lunch and additional beverages aside from complimentary tastings.

Ages 6 + Lynchburg City Schools are out of session, so make it a snow day with the family and come with us to check out Virginia's largest tubing park, The Plunge, at Wintergreen Mountain Resort. We will meet up and depart from Miller Center Parking lot at 11:00am. After the 90 minute tubing session, from 1:30pm-3:00pm, guests will warm up with a complimentary cup of hot cocoa before heading down the mountain to Devils Backbone Brewing Company for dinner and drinks. We will return to Miller Center by 6:30pm. Meals are on your own. See receipt notes for additional information. All youth 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Remember to dress warm!

Ages 16 + Join us for a Saturday spring shopping spree at Short Pump Town Center Mall, west of Richmond. We'll provide the transportation, road snacks, and great company. Lunch is on your own. We will leave the Miller Park parking lot at 9:00am. It takes two hours to drive to the mall and then the group will meet back together at a designated spot at 4:00 pm. The Next CITY COUNCIL SPOTLIGHT:

Mayor Michael Gillette We sat down with Michael Gillette, the mayor of our fair city, to find out what he thinks about parks, recreation, and the great outdoors.

Q. What is one of your favorite childhood memories involving recreation?

A. When I was a kid we used to go backpacking and camping all the time.

That is probably the most fun I had with regard to recreation. We did a lot of cycling, canoeing, and camping, but I think backpacking is probably what I enjoyed the most - when you get out for more than one night. A one-night trip is nice, but you need to be out for at least a few nights before you really start feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere.

Q. Why do you think Parks and Recreation is essential to a community?

A. There are so many reasons why its important. First of all, a park like this one, Riverside Park, is representative of what parks can do. This is my favorite park for a number of reasons. One is that it can give you a sense of being away. You 6

can get on the Alpine Trail and quickly feel like you are in the woods, providing an opportunity for solitude and to get away from some of the noise. This park also has playground equipment and a sprayground, providing opportunities for kids to be active and socialize. There are also tennis courts and open space for adults. I also like this park because it preserves our history. Usually when I come here I walk the trail, but you can also walk and see the old swimming pool, so there is a lot of heritage here. Parks are important for all these reasons – they are historical, they keep you active, they get you away from the daily grind, and they are also very important for the well being of the community.

Q. How do you and your family use Lynchburg’s parks and trails?

Also, public spaces are becoming more important now to younger folks. One of my daughters lives in Manhattan, and her life revolves quite a lot around time spent in Central Park. As more cities re-urbanize, those types of public spaces and parks become vital, allowing community interaction and access to nature.

A. Well this is not necessarily a parkrelated activity, but in the past five years I have learned how to play golf. It’s not something I ever thought I would do, and I don’t get out very much, but I do enjoy it. I also used to do a reasonable amount of outdoor rock climbing. I haven’t done it in years, but in my adult life, I have spent more time on that than any other outdoor activity.

A. I do really like Riverside Park for all the reasons I already listed, but I do have to say that we use the trail system more than any other. We park at the Greek Orthodox Church, walk a little on the pavement, then head off on the side trails. My wife walks several days a week there, and we try to get out there in the woods with the dog as well. We love the trails because you can bike or hike or whatever.

BIG THING

The Next Big Thing in Parks and Recreation was a team-building exercise that challenged our staff to think way outside the box to come up with a unique parks and recreation idea based in the concept of favorite childhood play experiences. This idea, spun from group brainstorming, could manifest in a program, concept, special event or capital improvement project. What resulted were six fantastically wild and innovative concepts that we hope to implement in the near Lynchburg future. We are already looking for project funders for two Next Big Thing projects: an urban orchard and a mobile recreation bus.

Archery Mini‑Camp Ages 8 t0 17 Campers will learn about this age‑old sport as they practice skills and improve their form in this three-day mini‑camp. Participants will be introduced to parts of the bow and arrow, different types of bows, and will learn to how to safely handle and use the equipment. Join us at Ivy Creek Park to learn the basics of spin casting for trout. We’ll fish from Clemmons Lake, an urban trout fishing site stocked by DGIF. Fishing equipment is provided, but you’ll need a current freshwater fishing license and trout stamp. Register by 2/18.

This monthly meet‑up is angled towards the social aspect of the sport of fishing. Join the conversation ‑ a platform for local anglers to get to know one another by sharing tackle secrets, favorite spots, background information, resources, and tales of “the one that got away.” Each monthly meet‑up will start off with a brief share session, followed by hands-on interpretation at a local fishing spot. This Hollywood drama focuses on one of the most significant victories of the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King's Equal Voting Rights Campaign featuring the epic march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. Selma had four Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion PictureDrama, Best Director, and Best Actor, and won for Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards. This film is rated PG-13, so we ask that children under 14 be accompanied by an adult and viewer discretion be advised.

Presenter, Ann van de Graaf is a Lynchburg artist and owner of Africa House, an art gallery and cultural center located on Garfield Avenue, Lynchburg, VA. Did we also mention we’re hiding 6,000 eggs for our hunt? No matter your age, we promise fun for the entire family!

Lynchburg Girls Softball Ages 5 to 18 Calling all players! Join your friends and meet new ones from Lynchburg and the surrounding counties. This game makes sure that all girls get a chance to play with a continuous batting order and every girl is required to play defense in at least two consecutive innings during every game. Returning players may register online. New players must bring a copy of their birth certificate to registration. Teams are formed in mid/late March & games begin in April and continue through June. Bubble Soccer Ages 18 + Join in the city’s most exciting new sport! A cross between soccer and “Zorbing”—a sport that involves rolling downhill in a giant plastic orb—Bubble Soccer puts a hilarious twist on traditional soccer. While attempting to score goals against their opponents, players wear “Battle Balls” and try to knock each other down in the process. Played on an artificial turf field at City Stadium, the game begins much like a competitive version of Dodgeball. Teams of 5 players fearlessly rush into the center to find and kick a soccer ball through their Battle Ball suit while knocking down their opponents. Games are played at the City Stadium Football Field. All meetings and registration will take place at Miller Center. In‑person registration only.

Batter Up! Come out to Peaks View Park and play like a kid again in one of our competitive co-ed leagues for more of a challenge. All leagues play two games per week with most playing doubleheaders. PICNIC TABLES AND SHELTERS

Located in the heart of the Midtown neighborhood, Miller Center opened to the public again in January after a two-year renovation process. Now one of the greenest, most energy efficient buildings in the City of Lynchburg, Miller Center is also home to a new 186-seat theatre, beautifully renovated classrooms, a commercial kitchen, and the Nature Zone Environmental Education Center.

The historic building also houses the main administrative offices of Parks and Rec and is completely accessible with a new elevator, improved walkways and parking, as well as a new pedestrian crossing into historic Miller Park near the Aviary.

Many recreation programs are offered at Miller Center, including arts, dance, theatre, fitness, naturalist, and enrichment. This location has been a gathering place in the community since 2004 and offers participants a great place to meet and have fun. Templeton offers Zumba, yoga, and cardio fit & tone classes and supports the softball, bowling, Pickleball, and Putt Putt activities at off-site locations. Stained glass artists and pottery enthusiasts throughout Central Virginia enjoy this quaint Art Studio located within minutes of the 460 bypass. Pottery enthusiasts enjoy the studio as it is equipped with multiple potter’s wheels, slab roller table, extruder, clay, and a variety of glazes for making the most intricate of pottery projects.

Stained Glass artists work diligently in classes or during the Open Studio Time with the provided grinders and light boxes using tools to make the colorful stained glass pieces. At the end of the first half, there was no score, and the Clickets had made the only first down. Maybe it was Coach Happy Lee’s half time talk… whatever it was, there was a different team on the field in the second half.

Then came the play that changed the entire complexion of the game – the Lynchburg Play, given to the Mites not quite two weeks before by Coach Lewis. In it, the entire team lined up to the right of the center, the ball was snapped back to Ellis who took off behind a wall of blockers and was hit while running to the right. But Ellis did not have the ball; he had given it back to the center (me) , who stood for a second – ball hidden – brush blocked a defender to the left, slowly walked down the field, and then ran for

About Happy Lee, the football coach of the Lynchburg Mighty Mites.

Happy Lee was the playground director at Miller Park, which is located in the center of the City of Lynchburg. His role included coaching all team sports, as well as counseling and being a father figure to “his boys.” As far as I know, it was the only job he ever had. Teams from “The Park,” as Miller Park was referred to, had a tradition of not only winning championships, but having loyal alumni who would always come back to see Happy on their visits from the army, navy, college, or new locations away from Lynchburg…

The Test Our inaugural 1945 season was followed by two more undefeated seasons, and word began to spread during the 1948 season that the Miller Park one-hundred –pound team might be getting an invitation to the Pop Warner Santa Claus Bowl, the mythical National Championship of Sandlot Football. Questions arose such as: will they be able to compete against teams from bigger cities? Have they been tested?

So, it was arranged for us to challenge Lynchburg’s legendary Shoeless Wonders from the Presbyterian Orphanage, who had achieved fame by being written about in Life magazine. We made the trip across town in the back of a panel truck. Our arrival was greeted by the rest of the orphanage, and the girls were as tough as the guys, hurling insults in a language more suited to a saloon or a naval base than the grounds of a church sponsored home for kids without parents.

These tough Presbyterian Home guys played without shoes regardless of temperatures or field conditions…Once the game began, however, we felt no fear. The game was hard fought and only one touchdown separated the teams, but we prevailed because of Happy’s coaching and all our hard practices…

The Lynchburg Play At last, the invitation that we had hoped for, came! We were chosen to be one of four teams to vie for title of National Champions of Pop Warner football.

With the invitation procured, our sponsors had to figure a way to get us to Philadelphia, stay there for two or three nights, and properly outfit as the team with uniforms and equipment. Everyone pitched in to raise the necessary money, The faithful alumni of The Park came through, along with workers at CraddockTerry Shoe Factory and the Lynchburg Hosiery Mill. One day at practice, we got a huge surprise when Art “Pappy” Lewis, the football coach at Washington and Lee University, came to our field to talk with us and give us a secret play, which was later dubbed “The Lynchburg Play”. It was a play of deception, designed to fake the other team and open up big scoring opportunities for us.”

The Championship None of us had ever been on a long bus trip, and I don’t know that we realized how far we were traveling. Several adults accompanied us: Floyd McKenna, the director of parks and recreation; George Peters, a Miller Park coach and great supporter; Dr. Fleck, a local veterinarian who was our team doctor; my father, Joe Vaughan, who was and an ardent supporter and, of course, Happy.

The Mighty Mites played a team from Omaha, Nebraska, winning with relative ease, 27-6. After a two-hour break, the time came for the biggest game of the year: The Lynchburg Mighty Mites versus the Philadelphia Clickets. The weather was bitter cold and the sky was a dark banker’s gray, as a winter storm was moving toward the City of Brotherly Love.

We were confident, but respectful of the defending national champions.

The Clickets had defeated a New York team, the Frank Sinatra–sponsored Cyclones, for the title the year before. As the Lynchburg News reported

thirteen yards before being tackled. The play gave our team its equalizer in first downs and sparked us on to the other three first downs which followed in short order on the running of Fisher, Ellis and Ronnie Vaughan. The game ended 0-0, but the Pop Warner rules clearly stated that in the event of a tie, a winner would be decided on total of first downs. The Mighty Mites margin of 4-1 in first downs carried the day and secured the first and only National Championship by a Lynchburg team.

The Celebration We passed the time on the bus ride by reminiscing about the game, our hotel stay, the Automat, and most of all, our years with Happy Lee. We sang “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” we laughed, and played card games which made the 18-hour trip bearable and almost enjoyable. Our real rewards were intrinsic: we loved Miller Park; we loved Happy Lee: we loved our teammates. Incredibly, after sixty years, we still do.

Salsa Workshop This workshop is designed for the fast learner, individuals with limited time, and those who want to brush up on their basic salsa moves. In this 2-hour workshop you will be taken through all the movements and some of the concepts taught in the Beginner Salsa classes. In addition, a voluntary game of “elimination” will be played to test your ability to demonstrate a set of movements without missing the timing (don’t worry, everyone is a winner in the end). Chef Marisa Catalano Jones is a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City.

After working in two prominent New York restaurants, Marisa started food styling for television. After returning to Virginia, she began teaching cooking classes in Charlottesville at The Seasonal Cook, The Charlottesville Cooking School and The Happy Cook. She currently does classes, events, specialty dinners, and catering. She is also the chef at Elizabeth’s Early Learning Center.

Thanks to the new spur trail, which culminates in a small footbridge at the intersection with the James River Heritage Trail , the Tinbridge neighbors can now access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and can enjoy walking and biking along the 21 miles of trail.

One change brought to City Stadium this fall was the installation of a new scoreboard on the north end of the stadium, including a 12’X20’ video-display screen. The screen, capable of showing high-definition slides, photographs ,and videos, received audience approval during its first season and is certain to be a fan favorite in upcoming seasons.

The Blackwater Creek Athletic Area improvement project was completed in October 2015. With the goal of increasing potential use of the space, the project focused on replacing the current baseball diamond field with a multi-purpose field. The field will be primarily used for local lacrosse and football leagues, but can also be used for other sports events and leagues.

The Tinbridge Spur Trail is a connector trail built from Hollins Street in the historic Tinbridge neighborhood to the Kemper Street branch of the James River Heritage Trail (aka Blackwater Creek Bikeway). The spur trail’s earthen treadway is 900 linear feet with several switchbacks to reduce land slope.

The expression swing allows you to join your child in face-to-face tandem. One side is a traditional bucket seat ideal for a child 5 years and younger while a parent or guardian sits opposite in an adult seat.

Virginia Amateur Sports, The City of Lynchburg, and Liberty University have teamed up to bring the Virginia Commonwealth Games to the City of Lynchburg. Over sixty-five sporting events are planned over the course of 2016 in Lynchburg, with one massive summer event hosted at Liberty University over the weekend of July 22-24. The LU campus will stage over 25 events that will feature snowboarding, ice hockey, and youth indoor soccer. The City of Lynchburg will showcase bubble soccer at the newly renovated Lynchburg City Stadium, adult flag football at newly constructed Blackwater Creek Athletic Area, youth 3-on-3 basketball and adult kickball at historic and newly refurbished Miller Park, and ASA Softball competitions at Peaks View Park.
