A Letter from Jennifer Jones
LYNCHBURG PARKS AND RECREATION & BILLY CRAFT CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM - PRESENT -
LYNCHBURG PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR Have you ever noticed that some of the most important things in life are taken for granted? We can get so distracted by day-to-day tasks or the glittering pursuit of external success that we forget about the truly important things in life; things like water, air, and trees that are necessary for our very survival.
MOVIES
This year Lynchburg Parks and Recreation (LPR) has decided it is due time to overcome the distraction matrix and get back to nature. We are talking about a true reconnection with planet Earth. We envision that this reconnection can be achieved through a recalibration of the natural human energy field synchronized by the heartbeat of the Earth. The Earth’s electromagnetic heartbeat is called Schumann resonance. The Schumann resonance of 7.83 Hz is the same frequency of the human brain’s alpha and theta waves (more about that in an upcoming blog). This may sound scientific but our plan is pretty simple. By drawing awareness to our inspired natural connection and creating this campaign replete with programs, events, and the energy that only parks and recreation can summon, we hope to manifest a healthier Lynchburg community with a renewed appreciation for our natural environment.
IN THE PARK AT RIVERSIDE PARK
We would like to invite fellow Lynchburgers to join us in a year-long celebration of our natural world and to especially lionize the trees. We are calling this campaign, “Please Do Hug the Trees.” To kick things off, we will gently attach signs on trees (don’t worry, we won’t hurt them) in our parks and trails that encourage folks to hug the trees. We are calling all tree huggers, new and old to take photos of themselves hugging trees with the attached tree insignia and send them to us through Facebook or email. I will choose the photo that best captures the spirit of the campaign to be featured in our next LPR activity guide. The goal is to have the Lynchburg collective become true tree huggers in the year 2016. We are secretly helping tree huggers to recalibrate their natural energy field too!

During the summer and fall season, there are three aspects to the “Please Do Hug The Trees” campaign including the signs on the trees, an invitation to join our new Mayor on a hike this fall in conjunction with the National Park Service’s Centennial Celebration 100 Hikes Campaign, and an opportunity to donate to our Natural Playgrounds Campaign operated through Friends of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. To get a better idea of the entire campaign and the method to our madness, please read my related blog posts on our website.

THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES ARE COMING TO LYNCHBURG!
The Virginia Commonwealth Games is an Olympic-style amateur sports festival for male and female athletes of all ages and skill levels. Over 9,000 athletes competed in the 2015 Games, previously held in Roanoke and Salem for 26 years. In the fall of 2015, Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg teamed up to bid on hosting the Virginia Commonwealth Games in 2016. In October of 2015, that bid was accepted. Though a vast majority of the games will be held on the award-winning fields at Liberty University, the City of Lynchburg will also host various events during the Games. Youth Fast-Pitch Softball and Adult Softball will be held on the newly renovated fields at Peaks View Park. Across town at Lynchburg City Stadium, the newly unveiled $5.5 million capital improvement project, Adult Bubble Soccer will take place. In addition, Adult Flag Football will be hosted at the Blackwater Creek Athletic Area, a $450,000 project that opened in fall of 2015. Other events hosted by the City include Adult Kickball at Miller Park, Indoor Youth Archery at Armstrong Gym, Badminton hosted at the Downtown Armory, 3-on-3 Basketball at the Miller, Fairview and Riverside Park outdoor courts, and Mountain Biking at Peaks View Park in September. Continue reading this article and learn more about our Commonwealth Games efforts at www.LynchburgParksAndRec.com/CommonwealthGames.

Q: What type of animal are you? A: I’m an American Toad. Q: Where do toads usually live? A: We toads don’t need to live near water, so you can find us anywhere. We’ll even move in under your porch if you let us! Q: What do you like to do for fun? A: I love my babe, Repeat! She’s all I need. Q: What’s your favorite food? A: I’m not too picky, but I do like to see my food wiggle before I eat it. Especially red worms! Q: What are some other interesting facts about you? A: Every couple of days I have to shed my skin and then I gobble it up! I also have to get help from my eyes when I swallow my food. T
The railroad used Irish and Italian immigrants and slaves as their labor force. Crews began on both sides of the ridge and joined the tunnel in the middle. Using the technique of “drill a small hole, blast with black powder, and repeat,” progress was often measured in mere inches per day.
LYNCHBURG’S FIRST RAILROAD WAS TRAINS AND THE WAR THE VIRGINIA & TENNESSEE (V&T). BY 1856,
THE LINE FROM LYNCHBURG, VA TO BRISTOL, T N WAS UP AND RUNNING. The V&T built a station where 9th Street met the James River and Kanawha Canal, today the site of Depot Grille. This station also served the Southside Railroad, which bought Percival’s Island and created a railroad yard. The depot also served as a stagecoach stop and canal landing, making it the transportation hub for the Hill City.
TUNNELING THROUGH SOLID ROCK The Virginia & Tennessee (V&T) rails ran from downtown Lynchburg west along Blackwater Creek. Near Hollins Mill, the railroad built a 508 foot-long tunnel through solid rock. 24

The Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) was formed in 1867 and is now CSX. When connected to railroad lines in West Virginia in 1890, the dream of linking ocean ports with the Ohio River via Lynchburg was finally a reality. Lynchburg passengers and local goods could travel across America on steel rails from coast to coast.
William “Billy” Mahone was a railroader before the Civil War and became a Confederate general. He returned to railroading after the war and by 1867, was president of the Southside Railroad. By 1870, he replaced Robert Owen as head of the V&T and took control of three railroads, merging them into
THE RAILROADS & LYNCHBURG TODAY None of the early railroaders could have foreseen how railroads would benefit Lynchburg again late in the 20th century. City planners envisioned a trail and greenway system

he first railroad in America was created in 1827-- early steam trains could run at the blazing speed of 18 miles per hour. Soon, communities across the nation were racing to create railroads and Lynchburg was no different.
Colonel Robert Owen was president of the V&T during the war and he and his wife, Narcissa, lived in Point of Honor, now part of the Lynchburg Museum System. By the end of the war, the V&T and other railroads were badly damaged and required months of repair. The railroads were a major factor in the city’s relatively quick economic recovery after the war.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Lynchburg was served by three railroads: the V&T, the Southside, and the Orange & Alexandria. The railroads and canal made the city a vital supply base and hospital center for the Confederacy. Soldiers and supplies were shipped out of Lynchburg and sick and wounded soldiers brought back to the hospitals. During World War I, railroads carried thousands of troops through Lynchburg on their way to the port of Hampton Roads for shipment to the war in Europe. Lynchburg women decided that the men on the troop trains needed some Southern hospitality and began passing out sandwiches and beverages to the troops at Union and Kemper Stations. Soon, the Red Cross Canteen Service joined in the effort and Lynchburg became well known as “Lunchburg.” During World War II, parachutes, bomb casings, boots, socks, and tents left Lynchburg factories by rail to support the war effort. Soldiers from Camp Pickett poured into Lynchburg on weekend passes by rail making the Hill City a “liberty town”.

the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad (A M &O). Mahone became president of the A M &O but financial problems forced him out as president in 1881.
and the Blackwater Creek Natural Area and trails were created in 1979. In 1983, Norfolk Southern deeded the old V&T right of way and Percival’s Island to the City.
Philadelphia bankers were the new owners and renamed it the Norfolk and Western, (N&W). As the N&W prospered, “Island Yard” on Percival’s Island was covered with side tracks and maintenance sheds that kept the trains running. From 1881 – 1982, the N&W moved passengers, freight, and huge amounts of coal to Virginia ports where it was shipped globally.
The formal name for Amtrak is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. Founded in 1971, Amtrak is partially funded by the Federal government and it operates most of the rail passenger operations in America on tracks owned by railroad corporations. Lynchburg today has four passenger trains accessed at Kemper Street Station. Travelers can be in Washington, D.C. in less than four hours and New York City in less than eight hours.
GROWTH OF THE RAILROADS In 1887, Lynchburg investors helped create a new railroad to connect Lynchburg markets to the North Carolina tobacco crop—the Lynchburg & Durham. The former Orange & Alexandria merged with several lines and by 1894 became the Southern Railway (SR). Craddock Terry was one of the largest employers in Lynchburg from the 1880s to the 1980s and its ties to the railroads were essential. The firm sent out dozens of salesmen with samples all across the country by rail. The orders were brought back to Lynchburg; the shoes were then made and shipped to the buyers by train. Craddock Terry had over 3,000 workers and was the largest shoe maker in the South.
REMNANTS OF THE RAILS Today, there are over 20 miles of trails used by thousands of people each year for hiking, biking, and the enjoyment of nature. The V&T tunnel and Percival’s Island, the former “Island Yard”, are now assets managed by the Department of Parks & Recreation. As you enjoy Lynchburg’s phenomenal trails, you might just see an old railroad tie or bridge pier or initials carved into stone during the Civil War peek out from the trail edge. The Lynchburg Museum exhibit: A Great Change in the Situation of Man: Lynchburg’s Railroads, is on display through the end of 2016. Community Recreation Centers Miller Center Located in the heart of the Midtown neighborhood, Miller Center opened to the public again in 2015 after a two-year renovation process. Now one of the greenest, most energy-efficient buildings in the City of Lynchburg, Miller Center is also home to a new 186-seat theatre, beautifully renovated classrooms, commercial kitchen, and the Nature Zone Environmental Education Center. The historic building also houses the main administrative offices of Parks and Rec and is completely accessible with a new elevator, improved walkways and parking, as well as a new pedestrian crossing into historic Miller Park near the Aviary.
CITY COUNCIL SPOTLIGHT:
TRENEY TWEEDY We sat down with Treney Tweedy, City Councilwoman at-large, to find out what she thinks about parks, recreation, and our city. Q. What is one of your favorite childhood memories involving recreation? A. I would go visit cousins and relatives over on Winston Ridge Road. At that time, Fairview Heights Community Center was there (now The Art Studio), and we would go and hang out on the basketball court. The rec center leader would pull out games for us and we all knew her. It was just a great place to be in the summer and in the afternoons during school. You knew folks would be there (after doing homework). It was just a place to be where you knew everyone, and they knew you. The center leader made sure everyone was comfortable, and you just had a place to hang out. Q. What are your favorite parks or trails in the city? A. When I was young, it was Riverside Park, which used to be a drive-through park. I have many childhood memories 40
of walking up to the park and just hanging out with friends on the swings. They used to have annual events and concerts there, and we would walk from home to go to them. My neighbor and I would play tennis in the courts in the evenings. Plus, my elementary school was right there, so this was my first park, my earliest memories. Later, I visited Peaks View Park a lot for my kids – for rec league sports practice, to walk the trails, or to picnic at the shelters. Those are probably my two favorites. Q. Why do you think Parks and Recreation is essential to a community? A. I think it is great for people to get outdoors and have a lot of activity. Lynchburg Parks and Recreation has such a wide range of activities – hiking, trails, biking, recreation - all of this adds to the quality of life in our city. Not only for those who live here, but also those who move from larger cities. To have these types of opportunities here in Lynchburg is fantastic. It is important as council members and as community leaders to support that, to upgrade

Many recreation programs are offered at Miller Center, including arts, dance, theatre, fitness, cooking, naturalist, enrichment, and more. You will find Miller Center classes and activities listed throughout this guide, but make sure to sign up for our email newsletter at www.LynchburgParksAndRec.com to get monthly updates on all the happenings! where we can, and to improve facilities where we can, because everyone should be able to enjoy our parks and recreation amenities.
Templeton Senior Center
Also, many people are choosing not to live in single-family homes anymore – choosing apartments, condos, lofts, etc. So with that, if they don’t have all the amenities built into their home and property, it is great to be able to hit the trail, walk to the parks, and go to the public pool.
Templeton Senior Center serves seniors and adults of all ages in the Lynchburg area. This location has been a gathering place in the community since 2004 and offers participants a great place to meet and have fun. Stop by Templeton for a game of bridge, canasta, mahjong or engage in a lively discussion on current issues or American literature. Looking for something a little more active? Templeton offers Zumba, yoga, and cardio fit & tone classes and supports the softball, bowling, Pickleball, and Putt Putt activities at off-site locations. For those of you looking to explore your creative side, why not try beading, watercolors, botanicals, oils or acrylic painting. Other opportunities for enrichment and lifelong learning may include health topics, language classes, driver improvement, wellness, gardening, travel and more.
The centers are also very important, and really have a strong sense of community. Everyone in the neighborhoods knows the children that are playing on the playground, and can look out for one another. All of this adds to having a great city, to people feeling like their tax dollars are being spent in a way that benefits everyone. We hope they take part in the things that are being offered. In recent years, Parks and Rec has expanded so much with a wide range of activities for everyone from young kids to seniors. We have something that we can offer to everyone, and it is affordable.

If you could spend a day in any park, which one would it be and why?
What do you love most about working for Parks and Recreation? I love the people, the department, and the endless possibilities for creativity.
If you could take any class in the upcoming guide, which one would it be?
Since my primary goal is programming for Miller Center and Miller Park, I would spend a full day at Miller Park! I’d watch the activities and meet everyone who would visit the Park to get a better connection and understanding of the surrounding community members and their needs.
What is your favorite Parks and Recreation memory?
I really enjoyed the first Movie in the Park event. It was my first week on the job and first time meeting all of the Rec staff. It was fantastic to see the success of a first time event and also the support from the public.
If you could take any class in the upcoming guide, which one would it be? Mountain Bike Handling Basics and Archery look pretty cool! You can also be sure to see me at the Old Time Jam in the park with my banjo!
