Scholarships Here at Lynchburg Parks and Recreation, our goal is to provide access to our recreation programs for all local citizens. If you’re a Lynchburg City resident in need of financial assistance to participate in parks & recreation programs, you and your family members may qualify for a scholarship. Applications are available on our website, at any of our community centers, or at our office at Miller Center. Applications must be submitted in-person, before you register, and 5 business days prior to a registration deadline.

Program Safety Safety is very important at Lynchburg Parks and Recreation as we continue to serve our community members with quality programs. We have implemented the following safety protocols for all our recreation programs: health screening questions for participants, social distancing setups, hand sanitation on site, and thorough cleaning of the facilities. We also offer a variety of virtual options to enjoy recreational programs safely in the comfort of your own home. Look for the to indicate programs with a virtual option.

A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR We have made it through the long dark winter and I could not be happier to see daffodils awakening along Blackwater Creek Bikeway, bluebirds singing from nest boxes in Ivy Creek Park, and the monarch butterflies fresh from their winter vacation in Mexico. It was an especially tough winter for me as I lost my father in January. If you also experienced a loss and need a place to refresh your spirit, I want to offer you comfort with special spaces to reflect like the Awareness Garden, the Butterfly Garden in Riverside Park, and the Remembrance Trail on Percival Island. Creekside Trail is another great place offering nature RX and serenity for the mind, body, and soul. For those needing human connection, I am excited to announce the Senior Games will be hosted in Lynchburg this August! The event will include 10 games such as pickleball, bridge, and softball. This is a perfect way to compete, meet new friends, cheer on family members, and converse at the senior social. In this program guide and through our website, we have our usual 200+ recreation and neighborhood center programs, as well as community events offered through the spring and summer including, Art in the Park, Older Americans Month Celebration, the Daddy Daughter Dance: Fathers Day Edition, Juneteenth Celebration, Go Skateboarding Day, James River Batteau Festival, annual Cardboard Boat Race, summer camps, softball leagues and nature programs. There are so many ways to lift your spirit through recreation programs and park spaces. I hope you find something in this guide that speaks to your needs. To continue meeting the community’s needs, the Lynchburg, Virginia Parks and Recreation Master Plan (Needs Assessment) is now in draft form. The Plan is over 300 pages including appendices. Developing this document into an effective 10year plan is no small feat and requires careful planning. We hope to build on the excellent public input during the community engagement portion of the process when we present the plan to you at a public meeting in May 2022. Stay tuned….. Naturally yours,

LYNCHBURG AREA YOUTH SPORTS INITIATIVE LAYSI is a non-profit organization made up of 25+ collaborating organizations, business and individuals with a mission to strengthen the body and character of our youth in Greater Lynchburg through sports. LAYSI creates opportunities for central city youth to develop friendships, healthy habits, and important life skills through accessible and inclusive youth sports activities. This organization is changing the game for kids in our community by providing sport sampler pop-ups that introduce kids to unique sports like lacrosse and anchor sports like soccer in various convenient locations like schools, neighborhood centers, parks and the YMCA. They provide free sports clothing and sports equipment through the Sports Locker located at Park View Mission. LAYSI is also removing barriers to youth sports participation by providing scholarships for league fees, summer camps, outdoor adventures and travel ball as well as assisting with transportation. Believing all kids deserve a great summer camp, on April 9, 2022 LAYSI hosted a Summer Blast Off event to create awareness about all summer camps, outdoor adventures, and youth sports opportunities available in the area. If you would like to ensure all kids have an opportunity to play any youth sport or sponsor a great summer experience, you can visit the Lynchburg Area Youth Sports Initiative www.LAYSI.org

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Parks are key to ensuring the health of our environment because they play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, providing clean water and clean air, and enabling conservation of natural resources. Parks provide an essential connection for Lynchburg citizens of all ages and abilities to the life‐enhancing benefits of nature and the outdoors. As the largest source of open space land in Lynchburg, parks and public lands are vital to the quality of life for all Lynchburg residents. Conservation and stewardship of the land, water, and natural resources is a key component of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department’s mission. infrastructure project updates CREEKSIDE TRAIL RESTORATION AND BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS The Downstream Bridge construction has been awarded to Athens Building and Construction, and they are currently working on the initial construction at their facilities. When those components are completed, they will be transported to Lynchburg for installation, and construction will begin on the bridge. Do not enter the construction area and mind all posted barricades and warning signs. If trespassing violations occur in active construction zones, LPD will be notified. Design and survey work continues on three remaining pedestrian bridges. We are excited about innovative construction involving removing three low-water crossings in Blackwater Creek to make it safer and more resilient, protect and encourage freshwater species, and allow canoe and kayaking further up the creek. We will be adding put-ins at Blackwater Creek Athletic Area for these purposes, and are planning wildflower installations and outdoor classroom areas along the Creek as educational opportunities will be many.

SUSTAINABILITY / GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE At Peaks View Park, we have implemented additional tree buffers along the Ivy Creek streambanks to help slow stormwater runoff and offer cooling shade. We will address long-term storm damage and drainage issues for the portion of Ivy Creek that runs through the park. This will allow substantial repairs and refurbishment of Field 4 and other fields affected by the poor drainage issues. An extensive installation at the cabin in Ivy Creek Park, partnered by Earth Right Mid-Atlantic/Convert Solar LLC, is approved. This educational exhibit will involve kiosks with hands-on demonstrations, visual guides, and active solar panels showing how this green power source works offering safe, sustainable energy options for schools, parks, and the public. We are partnering with Community Development on a new overlook and trail connection at Tinbridge Hill and the implementation of Phase 1 of the Jefferson Park Master Plan, both of which are funded by CDBG monies. The Department of Water Resources joined us on the new Master Plan for College Park. This Master Plan will improve stormwater storage within the park, and incorporates wetland meadows, natural play equipment, hammock garden, picnic and gathering areas, overlooks into the park and along the stream, and a walking loop.

BIGGERS PARK We have recently implemented substantial upgrades and improvements at Biggers Park, at the corner of Clay and Fifth Streets. A new playground, horseshoe pit, players’ benches at the basketball court, and adult exercise equipment are among the improvements. New ADA-accessible entrance improvements including new sidewalk and ramp, in addition to new steps and fencing; as well as overall site work highlight these upgrades. The project components were funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $110,000.

Design, build, race, (and most likely) sink! Join us and our partner the Mighty James River Company in our 5th annual race to the finish line! Boats must be crewed by a one or two-person team. Awards will be given out for fastest and most creative boats plus the most dramatic sinking. Note: the entire boat must be made of cardboard and duct tape. STREAM TEAM LYH COMMUNITY WATER MONITORS Ages 16+ Have you ever wondered what’s in the water? Is it safe for swimming? This is your chance to help answer those questions. Lynchburg Water Resources is creating a coalition to monitor the health of the creeks and streams around Lynchburg. Join us for one of our volunteer training sessions. We will cover the who, what, when, where, and why, in the beginning. The rest of the program will be a hands-on training covering the ins and outs of citizen water quality monitoring and preparing you to monitor on your own. For generations, neighborhood centers have been community hubs, where parents, students, seniors, families, and neighbors all gather. We’re still here, after all of these years; and while times have changed, our purpose remains the same– to cultivate neighborhoods which support the people who live there. In addition to running the popular Summer Lunch & Play program for school-aged youth, we are finding new ways to connect with neighborhood residents of all ages.
