A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR Happy Holidays Lynchburgers; we have opened the Langhorne Trestle Trail Extension The novelty of this new trail spur has provoked curiosity seekers and fitness buffs alike to populate our newest trail extension.

The consultants have been selected and The Needs Assessment and Comprehensive Park Master Planning process will begin with our first public kick-off meeting, tentatively set for Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 6:00pm in the Miller Center in Miller Park.

We are saying good-bye to Sharon Brown, Special Events Coordinator, who has been with the City for 40 years. Best wishes to Sharon in her retirement.

There are many programs in this guide that can be taken on-line via our new virtual platforms. Additionally, the Polar Plunge is our newest special event and you’ll notice us on the bandwagon of the archery trend for sportsmen.

Finally, our department won three Virginia Recreation and Park Society Awards. Outstanding New Professional was won by Rachel Smith. Some of you may know her from her excellent programming at the Art Studio. The Diamond Hill Neighborhood Center won the Best New Renovation/ Addition Award for the center renewal project funded by CDBG Funds. We also won an award for Best New Program honoring the program Sibshops. This program catered to the unique needs of siblings of special needs children.

2020 VIRGINIA RECREATION AND PARKS SOCIETY ANNUAL AWARDS RACHEL SMITH was honored in the category of OUTSTANDING NEW PROFESSIONAL. This is awarded in recognition of new professionals for outstanding commitment and achievements in the parks and recreation field. Winning candidates display a high level of commitment to the parks and recreation field; leadership and contributions made on a community level; and active support to and involvement in VRPS, including but not limited committee membership, event volunteer, legislative or fundraising activities.

DIAMOND HILL NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER was honored in the category of BEST NEW RENOVATION (BRICK & MORTAR).

Built on the site of the former Marce T. Jones School, the Diamond Hill Center has long-held significance to the community. The grounds were recently renovated and today, this familiar center is abuzz with activities for friends and neighbors of all ages. The center also offers many recreational programs, including an after-school program for youth ages 6–17, a summer camp program, teen programs and programs for seniors.

Some community meetings also take place at the Diamond Hill Center.

SIBSHOPS was honored in the category of BEST NEW PROGRAM. Sibshops are opportunities for brothers and sisters of children with special health and developmental needs to find peer support and education within a recreational setting. Throughout their lives, brothers and sisters will share many of the same concerns that parents of children with special needs experience, as well as, issues that are uniquely theirs.

infrastructure project updates AVIARY PARKING & SITE IMPROVEMENTS The historic Aviary project is continuing, with beautiful new parking pavers installed, sidewalks and replacement curbing underway, and new landscaping is going in around the building and along Grove Avenue. Final asphalt paving is scheduled to take place soon. Phase 1 of the waterproofing project, which will protect the building from further water damage, is underway and should be completed by the end of the year. The HVAC systems, which had to be removed during the waterproofing project, are being reinstalled. The Aviary, one of the City’s most popular wedding and event venues, will be available for rentals beginning in January and all during the first, second, and third quarters of 2021. Phase 2 of the waterproofing project will involve delicate repairs to the foundation areas and will be undertaken when funding is available in winter 2021-2022.

CREEKSIDE TRAIL RESTORATION AND BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS The trail has suffered much damage due to heavy rain events and flooding over the past several years, and this has become an issue that will required continued maintenance and possible relocation of certain segments of the trail to protect it from further damage. In FY 2020, we are focusing on the replacement of the four footbridges that were destroyed in the August 2018 flood, and construction of new trail segments to the new locations of two of these bridges. The final designs for the replacement bridges over Ivy Creek and the Downstream Swinging Bridge have been completed by Comprehensive Construction Services, and we are now working with Wetlands Studies and Solutions on the wetlands permitting.

Construction on the two new bridges will begin after we have received the wetland permit and local approvals, and is expected to occur in the Spring of 2021. Initial designs have begun on the remaining two bridges, and we expect to receive these soon.

LANGHORNE TRESTLE BRIDGE & BLACKWATER CREEK TRAIL EXTENSION This beautiful trail, including the bridge crossing over Langhorne Road, is now open and enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, and riders! The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held Thursday, October 22nd at 10:00am at the Ed Page entrance off of Langhorne Road. Approximately 60 people attended the socially-distanced event, including local dignitaries, supporters, and trail users. Partially funded by a Federal Highway Administration TAP Grant with a 20% local match, the bridge renovation features a new, skillfully hand-fabricated wooden decking with protective metal handrails and fencing. The project extended the trail from the Ed Page Entrance at the Awareness Garden about ½ mile to the new entrance at the parking lot at Linkhorne Middle School, where twelve new parking spaces expand the availability of parking for the trail. The new trail features extensive native landscaping, paved asphalt surface, and interpretive historic signage.

PEAKS VIEW PARK PLAYGROUND The new Playground at Peaks View has been completed, with all-new play equipment and the construction of an innovative Bank Slide, which is a new feature at the Park. Bank Slides are a creative and safe way to turn a potentially overlooked or unusable slope or hillside into a fantastic opportunity for play.

Residents have been enjoying the new playground equipment. Additional landscaping will be installed in the area adjacent to the Bank Slide for an aesthetically pleasing finish to the project.

RIVERSIDE PARK TENNIS COURT RESURFACING AND UPGRADES The Tennis Courts were recently resurfaced with the new wear-resistant, easieron-the-joints surface that was used on the basketball courts, much to the appreciation of residents. The Overlook has been completed and is a popular rental site for weddings and outdoor events. Other projects in the works include improvements to the Train Exhibit to include a picnic area and the replacement of the train bell, the addition of a shade structure at the Sprayground, and improvements to the Park entrance, as well as the installation of electrical conduit along the driveway that will provide power for holiday lighting.

The Dept. of Public Works is working on the Riverside Swimming Pool area to address drainage issues that are encroaching on the adjacent train display. This project will include re-parging the visible remaining pool walls, and reconstruction of the stone sidewalk around a portion of the pool area.

BASKETBALL COURT RESURFACING AND UPGRADES Six City Parks recently benefited from extensive upgrades to the basketball courts including a protective, wear-resistant surface, new backboards, posts and goals. These include Miller Park, Riverside Park, Biggers Park, Fort Avenue Park, and Westover Park. The new, resilient surfaces are designed to protect players’ joint tissues, and have a substantial five-year guarantee against cracking and surface deterioration, vastly superior both in look and feel to the old surfaces.

Parks and Recreation has received overwhelming positive feedback from Park users who play on these courts, and is planning to refurbish several other courts in the City over the next year using the same process.

THE DIRT ON GARDENS All Ages Have you thought about planting a garden but don’t know where to begin? Dig up your dirt and bring it in for testing to find out what you can grow with help from the Naturalists of Lynchburg Parks and Rec. In recognition of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we invite all ages to dig deep in to the science of soils. Youth under 16 must have an adult present. Register by 2/9. We have ACA (American Canoe Association) certified instructors to lead canoe and kayak classes at Ivy Creek Park. Too cold to paddle? We also have USA Archery certified instructors to teach you basic to advanced archery skills.

PRIMITIVE FIRE MAKING

NAVIGATION | MAP & COMPASS

Ages 16+

Ages 13+

During this course you will create fire from nothing. Learn the bushcraft skill of making fire using a bow drill, fire piston and ferro rod (think modern flint and steel) to create a smoldering ember. We will also make char cloth to take home and learn to create a fire nest to catch that ember. Register by 3/31.

Learn the lost art of navigating with a compass and map. A GPS receiver can tell you where you are on the planet, but might not tell you how to get where you want to be. When your battery dies, the trail peters out or is covered by snow, knowing how to find your own way will be vital.

During this class you will learn to identify the basic parts of a compass, use your compass to orient your map, learn how contour lines, and how to visualize your terrain and other useful map details. Register by 4/13.

The 10 Essentials are equipment that can be a lifesaver in an emergency; items that can help you in the event of minor injuries, sudden weather changes, or unexpected delays. Join us to discuss how The Ten Essentials has evolved from a list of individual items to a list of functional “systems” that you can tailor to any trip. Register by 3/30 .

Ever struggle to keep a fire going? A fire can be a source of warmth, a method to prepare food or the setting for a great story. Whether you’re on a camping trip, in the backyard, or using your home fireplace the skill of building and maintaining a fire can be beneficial. Join us for tips and tricks on lighting a fire, keeping it going, and safely putting it out. In this class you will use matches or a lighter to start and maintain a fire.

NATURE BUILD A BLUEBIRD BOX Ages 16+ Bluebirds play an important role in their ecosystem by feeding on a large number of insects that can destroy crops. Farmers plant bluebird boxes around agricultural fields and with a few tools and materials, you can make a nesting box for bluebirds. MAPLE SUGARING All Ages Tap the sap for a sweet treat! After the tree tapping demonstration, participants will taste the difference between several types of syrup samples, hear the tale of Thomas Jefferson’s ‘maple sugar scheme’ and other sweet stories about maple syrup production in Virginia. All participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Register by 2/25.

BACKYARD STORMWATER MANAGEMENT Ages 13+ The key to creating a truly resilient and sustainable stormwater management plan for your home landscape is to understand your site. Program will feature an interactive model and discussion of how stormwater flows through your yard. Participants will learn how to look at how water works in your home landscape and how it fits into the big picture, identify existing issues and opportunities for improvement, and landscape techniques that respond to your home’s stormwater mitigation needs. HOMEOWNERS TREE WORKSHOP Ages 16+ Wondering what trees are best for your yard? Sarah Hagan, Lynchburg’s urban forester, will discuss the best strategies for planting and maintaining trees in your yard that are best suited for our area.

The workshop will include what native trees are best for wildlife; what trees are best for shading your home and reducing electric bills; what trees are best for providing fruit and nuts; and how trees help prevent storm water runoff. The workshop will conclude with a tree planting demonstration. Meet near the Aviary on Grove Street and bring a mask.

The workshop is free, but registration is required.

The inaugural Lynchburg Polar Plunge at Percival’s Island is your chance to prove you can bear the cold and crawl out with pride. For the safety of participants and staff, participants are required to pre-register to ensure safe social distancing procedures.

Participants will be seeded into start waves based on registration time. In conjunction with the Lynchburg Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue team, Lynchburg Parks and Recreation lifeguards and staff will be stationed around the event site to ensure your safety. Register by 2/3.

During the last year we have seen an increase in the number of people using our parks and trails. We would like to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers who have helped to keep things cleaned up for everyone’s enjoyment. We also appreciate volunteers that served at our centers and events. We realize that during the pandemic it has been hard to think about volunteering; however it is more important than ever. Volunteering is a great way to stay connected with the community. You can volunteer as an individual, family, or group. Make an ongoing commitment or work on a one-time project or event. FACILITY RENEWAL PROJECTS A WORK IN PROGRESS In 2020 Parks and Recreation completed facility renewal projects at the Fairview Heights and Yoder Neighborhood Centers, with the goal of bringing the popular neighborhood hubs into the twenty-first century.

These much-needed upgrades improve the quality of public space for Fairview Heights and Tinbridge Hill residents. The newly fashioned centers feature durable finishes, natural materials, and flexible spaces to meet the needs of the community.

The projects have been funded through federal Community Development Block Grants, with the support of neighborhood residents, the Community Development and Public Works departments, and City Council. The design for both projects was completed by Virginia A&E; it features flexible interior spaces as well as views of the adjoining parkland and neighborhood.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS CENTER FACILITY RENEWAL PROJECT Project awarded to Coleman-Adams Construction Construction began in June.

The project budget is $216,000.

YODER CENTER FACILITY RENEWAL PROJECT Project awarded to Jamerson-Lewis Construction Construction began in September.

Located in the heart of the Midtown neighborhood, Miller Center opened to the public again in 2015 after a two-year renovation process. Now one of the greenest, most energy-efficient buildings in the City of Lynchburg, Miller Center is also home to a new 186-seat theatre, beautifully renovated classrooms, commercial kitchen, and the Nature Zone Environmental Education Center. The historic building also houses the main administrative offices of Parks and Rec and is completely accessible with an elevator, improved walkways and parking, as well as a pedestrian crossing into historic Miller Park near the Aviary.

Many recreation programs are offered at Miller Center, including arts, dance, theatre, fitness, cooking, nature and outdoor, enrichment, and more. Templeton offers yoga, and Tai Chi classes, and supports the softball, bowling, and miniature golf activities at off-site locations.

Stained glass artists and pottery enthusiasts enjoy this quaint Art Studio, equipped with multiple potter’s wheels, slab roller table, extruder, clay, and a variety of glazes for making the most intricate of pottery projects.

Stained Glass artists work diligently in classes or during the open studio time with the provided grinders and light boxes using tools to make the colorful stained glass pieces. This center is easily accessible for all and has a newly lit parking area. Look for stained glass and pottery classes in the Arts section of this guide.

Afro-Caribbean unites dance, rhythm, and live drumming creating an environment and dance community that nurtures, heals, renews, and inspires the body and spirit. Participants will engage their core and use full body isolations to stretch, firm and tone the entire body while learning authentic Afro-Caribbean dance moves over 16 weeks.

Collecting rainwater from your roof to use on your garden or lawn helps the environment and saves you money on your water bill! In this workshop, you’ll get hands on experience building a rain barrel and learn how to install and maintain it. Throughout the course, learn the basics of gardening and expand your knowledge of basic plant facts, needs, and locations. MARSHALL EXPEDITION FILM SCREENING All Ages 200 years ago Chief Justice John Marshall, along with a crew of boatmen, completed a river survey through Appalachia aimed at determining the feasibility of a canal that would connect Richmond with the Ohio River Valley. In tribute to Marshall’s vision and courage, a crew of lusty Lynchburg batteauxmen constructed a batteau replica and traveled 225 miles upstream on the James and Jackson Rivers, then descended 130 miles on the Greenbrier and New. LIVE ANIMAL SAFARI All Ages | $200.00 LR | $215.00 Get up close with a turtle; snake or toad at your next party.

Package includes a two hour rental of Miller Center community room, a 45-60 minute animal presentation, tables and chairs, decorations, and a cake and punch! Twenty person maximum. Additional fee applies to twenty-one or more participants. Register 2 weeks in advance.

INDOOR ARCHERY PARTY Ages 8+ | $275.00 LR | $290.00 Try your hand at Archery. Learn the basic elements of archery including parts of the bow, shooting form, and the layout of the range from a USA Archery certified instructor. All equipment provided. Party package includes a two hour rental of Armstrong Gym, 60 minute archery program, decorations, and cake and punch. Fifteen person maximum. Register 2 weeks in advance.

POTTERY PARTY Ages 15+ | $350.00 LR | $365.00 Lynchburg Parks & Recreation offers custom recreational program opportunities for groups of all ages. Recreation staff can come to your location or accommodate classes and field trips at a city recreation center or in our parks. Most programs can be customized to fit your needs, interests, and occasion, from school groups, social clubs, retirement communities, to family reunions.

Grade specific programs are designed to meet scholastic SOLs. Visit our website to learn more about program offerings.

Play with clay and experiment on the wheel. Party includes a 3-hour rental of the Jackson Height Art Studio, three hours of personalized pottery instruction, all class supplies. Saturday | May 15 Riverside Park 10:00am–3:00pm Lynchburg Parks and Recreation and 7 Hills Art Club are excited to safely bring people of all ages together through art and showcase the talents of local artists!

Wander through Riverside Park to enjoy exhibitions of local artists, interactive children’s activities, and live demonstrations including painting and wheel thrown pottery. Art in the Park will also feature an Art Walk on a paved trail with enlarged pictures of famous artwork with descriptions about the artist.

To become an art vendor or demonstrate your artistic style in a live demonstration, visit LynchburgParksandRec.com to complete the Art in the Park application. Artists apply by May 9.

Blackwater Creek watershed encompasses a major tributary to the James. Come out and help improve the esthetics of Lynchburg’s blueway trail system. Wear sturdy, closed toe shoes or boots (no sandals or slipons), work clothes, a hat, work gloves, and sunscreen is recommended. Work projects and locations will be distributed the week of the program via email. Register in advance to help us prepare. Turn in a completed scavenger hunt card by 4/5 to the Miller Center with your name to enter a drawing for a prize!

In July 2019 Lynchburg became a certified Bee City USA. Stop by the Community Market to celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day and see what all of the buzz is about!
