A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR On December 5, 2019 at 10:00am, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Langhorne Road Bridge Renovation and Blackwater Creek Trail Extension Project. This trail extension project has been 20 years in the making and we are finally starting the construction phase. The Project includes the stabilization and renovation of the abandoned Langhorne Road railway trestle and the continuation of Blackwater Creek (Bikeway) Trail from its current ending at the Ed Page Entrance parking lot to the trestle and onwards to the grounds of Linkhorne Middle School.
4th annual
chase the chill
Lynchburg Public Works, in partnership with Lynchburg Parks & Recreation, started construction on the Percival’s Island Pedestrian Bridge over the James River. The bridge is undergoing much needed repairs with replacement of the decking and major reconstruction of the overlook platform. The bridge, along with the adjacent parking lot, is schedule to reopen on March 4, 2020. As part of the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Master Plan, we continue to make progress in connecting all major City parks with the trail system. This trail loop around the City will connect with Poplar Forest to the west and Amherst County to the east. We have secured Hill Studio out of Roanoke to provide a conceptual drawing with cost estimates for the next phase that will connect Peaks View Park with Ivy Creek Nature Park. We hope to secure grants and begin construction in 2020. Naturally yours,
Jennifer Jones, Director Lynchburg Parks and Recreation

VRPS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Lynn Fox There are 110 parks and recreation departments in Virginia, and we are proud to announce that Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department’s Lynn Fox, retired senior recreation specialist at Templeton Senior Center, was awarded Virginia Recreation and Park Society’s Distinguished Service Award at the VRPS Annual Banquet in September 2019. Congratulations Lynn on your well deserved recognition.
HAPPY RETIREMENT Our Park Service Manager, Andrew Reeder has retired after 23 years of service to the citizens of Lynchburg. We will greatly miss Andy’s wisdom, park operations knowledge, park planning expertise, and his heart for the environment and conservation of parklands in Lynchburg. He was an authority in the park management field and served as the principal steward of 900 acres of Lynchburg’s parklands and natural areas. He was also the Department’s curator of the 5 and 10 year Capital Improvement Project plans. To say Andy’s retirement is a loss for our department is an understatement. Andy’s accomplishments are many, but listed below are some highlights: • Became the first NRPA Certified Playground Safety Inspector in the Region, as well as the first Certified Parks and Recreational Professional in Lynchburg • Planning, obtaining funding, and building Ivy Creek Park–the City’s first new park in approximately 25 years • Lynchburg’s first Off–Leash Dog Park and Dog Park Executive Board • Developing planning, funding, construction and management of specific capital projects such as Younger Park, Riverside Park, Creekside Trail Extension, Ivy Creek Greenway, Kemper Station Trail, Ed Page Entrance/Awareness Garden, James River Heritage Trail, Percival’s Island, City Stadium, Ivy Creek Greenway/Langhorne Trestle and more Andy will be greatly missed by the City of Lynchburg. We wish Andy a very happy and healthy retirement that he so richly deserves.

RESTAURANT AND SHOPS
1 in 3 bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination. In July 2019 Lynchburg became a certified Bee City USA. Stop by the Community Market on Saturday, April 25th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and see what all of the buzz is about! Support local farmers and pick up your weekly groceries, plus get educated by a wide variety of organizations concerned about pollinators. Food trucks, vendors, crafts, music, and fun activities will be available for the whole family. Don’t talk about it, bee about it!
ARTS AND CRAFTS
Open five days a week inside the Market, these hometown favorites include locally owned restaurants, a bakery, coffee roaster, and shops just as unique as their beloved proprietors. Enjoy country and ethnic cuisines or sip a fresh cup of coffee and nibble on a made from scratch croissant.
Inside the market you will find the cooperative artist space where local makers showcase creations inspired by regional culture both old and new. Wander through the aisles Tuesday through Friday from 9am-2pm and Saturday from 7am-2pm and you may even be able to meet the artist or crafter or see a demonstration of their work. There is a wide selection ranging from fine jewelry to goats milk soaps, to hand-thrown pottery and reclaimed wood furniture, to local photography and paintings. Come by and visit!
FARMERS & ARTISAN FOODS
The Lynchburg Community Market proudly continues its age-old tradition as the place to go for farm-fresh produce. Every Saturday year-round and Wednesdays in season, come get the very best in fresh produce, fruit, meat, cheese, plants, baked goods, and specialty foods. Talk to our local producers and share in the food traditions of our region that have remained at the heart of our historic Market.

infrastructure project updates LANGHORNE ROAD BRIDGE RENOVATION AND BLACKWATER CREEK TRAIL EXTENSION PROJECT The Langhorne Road Bridge Renovation and Blackwater Creek Trail Extension Project include the stabilization and renovation of the abandoned Langhorne Road railway trestle and the continuation of Blackwater Creek (Bikeway) Trail from its current ending at Langhorne Road to Linkhorne Middle School. The overall cost of the project is $2,000,000 with most funding coming from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), via a $1,600,000 Transportation Alternatives Program grant. The City of Lynchburg appreciates the continued support of Virginia Secretary of Transportation Shannon Valentine and Commonwealth Transportation Board Representative Bert Dodson for their assistance in securing the funding for this important project. Coleman-Adams Construction, Inc. is the contractor for this project which is anticipated to be completed by November 2020. Whitman Requardt & Associates is assisting the City with design and construction management of the project.
RIVERFRONT PARK | KIWANIS CENTENNIAL PLAYGROUND PROJECT In the spring/summer of 2020, a new portion of the Downtown 2040 Master Plan will be implemented. The Kiwanis Centennial Playground will be erected adjacent to the water fountain/sprayground in Riverfront Park. The estimated cost of the playground is $150,000, the funds to be raised by the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club in conjunction with their Centennial celebration. A handicapped accessible restroom will also be constructed in the park per the Master Plan. If you are interested in contributing to the project, please contact Lynchburg Kiwanis Club: (434) 237-3364.
PEAKS VIEW PARK TO IVY CREEK PARK TRAIL CONNECTION PROJECT Lynchburg Parks and Recreation has recently secured the services of Hill Studio in Roanoke to provide a conceptual design and cost estimate for the Creekside Trail extension that connects Peaks View Park to Ivy Creek Park. This project is a portion of the plan to connect all City parks with the trail system culminating in a loop around the City. Residents will be able to participate in physical activity with this new trail infrastructure.

An accurate count by the census contributes to good policy because census data can help identify demographic trends early, giving legislators time to address future needs and craft solutions. The data also helps to keep a historical record of demographic information. The next census in 2020 will require counting an increasingly diverse and growing population of around 330 million people in more than 140 million housing units. In order to get an accurate count, the United States Census Bureau must build an accurate address list of every housing unit, maximize self-response to the census, and efficiently follow up with those who do not respond. The census aims to count the entire population of a country and the location where each person lives. The census asks questions such as current home and group living situations, how many people live or stay in each home, and the sex, age, and race of each person. The City of Lynchburg formed a Complete Count Committee comprised of community representatives to assist in the Census Bureau’s goal of counting everyone once, only once, and in the right place! The City of Lynchburg requests your help in making Census2020 a success! The decennial census is a national survey conducted every ten

RIVERSIDE PARK HISTORIC OVERLOOK PROJECT
and where European settlers came to ferry goods across the new state of Virginia. Riverside Park was a private estate, and then the grounds of a public smallpox hospital before being reserved as open space in a growing urban neighborhood. The stonework of Riverside Park’s stone overlook and Alpine Trail are unique. The preservation and documentation of this stonework is essential for retaining the park’s structures and historic character. Many Lynchburg Farm program laborers worked on Riverside’s infrastructure. Local people and various community groups have been stewards of its trees and other plantings. It became a place where historic artifacts have been assembled, including the packet boat Marshall and the Miller Claytor house in 1936, the train exhibit in 1962 and the Fink deck truss bridge in 1985. In 1930, City Farm prisoners began work on a lookout tower above the

For decades, Neighborhood centers have been hubs of community activity. People and programs may have changed over the years, but our purpose remains the same– to cultivate neighborhoods which support the people who live there. Our programs address three basic needs: fostering career development, supporting the family environment, and expanding educational opportunities. Check out some of our featured programs on the next few pages. For a full schedule of programs and activities, drop-in your neighborhood center, pick up a monthly calendar, and chat with the staff.

MARSHALL EXPEDITION FILM SCREENING All Ages 200 years ago Chief Justice John Marshall, along with a crew of boatmen, completed a river survey through Appalachia aimed at determining the feasibility of a canal that would connect Richmond with the Ohio River Valley. In tribute to Marshall’s vision and courage, a crew of lusty Lynchburg batteauxmen constructed a batteau replica and traveled 225 miles upstream on the James and Jackson Rivers, then descended 130 miles on the Greenbrier and New. View the documentary of a National Geographic expedition on the big screen in the Miller Center Theater and participate in a Q&A with the crewmen and local historians.
