A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR We have some truly exciting news! The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department has been recognized on the national stage. Our new therapeutic recreation section’s Sibshops, a program for siblings of children with special needs was featured in the National Parks and Recreation Association’s July magazine.

To say we are proud of our social equity efforts would be an understatement.

Fit and Strong is coming to Lynchburg.

Thanks to a grant from the Centra Foundation, Fit and Strong, a program for lower extremity osteoarthritis will be available in Lynchburg. If you are over 60, have arthritis in your legs and can meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Miller Center for 90 minutes, you could be eligible for this pilot program. The program is free and those on a limited income will be given first priority. Interested arthritis sufferers can call Lynchburg Parks and Recreation at 434-4555858 to register their name for Fit and Strong. All registrants will be vetted according to participant profile with 20 participants being selected to begin the program in September 2019. This program is supported by Live Healthy Lynchburg and Friends of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation.

WALK Parks are essential to the physical, social, environmental, and economic health of a community—and cities nationwide. That’s why the National Recreation and Park Association, the Trust for Public Land, and the Urban Land Institute are leading a nationwide movement to ensure there’s a great park within a 10-minute walk of every person, in every neighborhood, in every city across America. Over 220 Mayors and counting have come together to support the 10-Minute Walk campaign and are increasing equitable park access and quality through local policy changes, master planning efforts, and increased funding.

Studies have shown that people who live within a 10 minute walk of a park are three times more likely to get the recommended daily allowance of physical activity. Physical activity and healthy eating are keys to living healthy. This is why building parks in Lynchburg Park Deserts are so important. On the next page is the map of park deserts for the City of Lynchburg.

Located in the heart of the Midtown neighborhood, Miller Center opened to the public again in 2015 after a two-year renovation process. Now one of the greenest, most energy-efficient buildings in the City of Lynchburg, Miller Center is also home to a new 186-seat theatre, beautifully renovated classrooms, commercial kitchen, and the Nature Zone Environmental Education Center. The historic building also houses the main administrative offices of Parks and Rec and is completely accessible with a new elevator, improved walkways and parking, as well as a new pedestrian crossing into historic Miller Park near the Aviary.

Many recreation programs are offered at Miller Center, including arts, dance, theatre, fitness, cooking, nature and outdoor, enrichment, and more. This location has been a gathering place in the community since 2004 and offers participants a great place to meet and have fun. Stop by Templeton for a game of bridge, canasta, mahjong, or engage in a lively discussion on current issues or American literature. Looking for something a little more active? Templeton offers Zumba, yoga, and cardio fit & tone classes, and supports the softball, bowling, and Putt-Putt activities at off-site locations.

For those of you looking to explore your creative side, why not try crafts, watercolors, oils, or acrylic painting.

Other opportunities for enrichment and lifelong learning may include health topics, language classes, driver improvement, wellness, gardening, travel, and more.

Stained glass artists and pottery enthusiasts enjoy this quaint Art Studio, equipped with multiple potter’s wheels, slab roller table, extruder, clay, and a variety of glazes for making the most intricate of pottery projects. Stained Glass artists work diligently in classes or during the open studio time with the provided grinders and light boxes using tools to make the colorful stained glass pieces. NEW YOUTH FUTURES COORDINATOR READY FOR LIFT OFF Renee Chalmers is the new Youth Futures Coordinator for the City of Lynchburg. The Youth Futures Coordinator is a newly created position and part of the City’s Building Human Capital Collaborative. Chalmers graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and also received her MBA and Master’s of Arts in Human Services from Liberty University.

Being a survivor and conqueror of generational poverty, she aspires to instill hope and opportunity to low-income families to help strengthen the family unit, promote self-sufficiency and boost the local economy by facilitating career development initiatives and connecting youth and their families to workforce entities. She is a Certified Career Services Provider and Global Career Development Facilitator. She will be housed at the College Hill Recreation Center located at 811 Jackson St, Lynchburg, VA 24504 and looks forward to serving you.

For decades, Neighborhood centers have been hubs of community activity. People and programs may have changed over the years, but our purpose remains the same– to cultivate neighborhoods which support the people who live there.

Our programs address three basic needs: fostering career development, supporting the family environment, and expanding educational opportunities. FACILITY RENEWAL PROJECTS Neighborhood Centers are each undergoing facility renewal projects. These projects are funded through the Federal Community Development Block Grant, administered by the City of Lynchburg.

The renewal projects improve the functional use of the space and upgrade the finishes with durable, lasting materials. Each renewal project also features a connection to the park and celebrates unique neighborhood character. See how far we have come!

AFTER SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM Ages 6–17 On weekdays after school, the neighborhood centers focus on growing children through active play, homework help, snack, and enrichment activities. The schedule follows the Lynchburg City Schools’ academic calendar. Youth ages 6 to 12 may participate in the program. Teenagers age 13–17 may participate as Teen-Leaders. Register your child at the neighborhood center of your choice.

After the school day ends, Bass Elementary school kids are busy in discovery at Fairview Heights Center, a Twenty-First Century Learning Center collaborative site. Fairview Center has made a priority of STREAM–Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Kids load off the bus, enter the center, stow away their backpacks, have a snack and active-play time, before choosing work on the circuit board, a book from the library shelves, or another cool featured experiment. Children, especially girls, are encouraged to explore and embrace their unique STREAM interests. During school breaks the kids have even more time to explore STREAM themes as the Fairview Heights Center becomes their informal learning lab.

RECREATION SHUFFLE SENIOR PROGRAM Ages 50+ Neighborhood Centers offer opportunities for senior adults to get connected and get moving. Seniors are invited to shuffle between centers, each with their own weekly schedule. If pool is your game, run the tables at Fairview Heights; if it’s cards or Tai Chi, head on over to Daniel’s Hill. How about health screenings and gardening at Yoder Center? For lunch-and-learn, line dancing, or seasonal crafts, check out Diamond Hill. The Senior Recreation Shuffle program sets aside a time and place for seniors to connect with each other and with community resources. Diamond Hill Center

Neighborhood Centers are teaming up with the Lynchburg Fire Department and Centra Trauma Services, to offer hands-only CPR classes to neighborhood residents. Each quarter, the Fire Department will travel to a different neighborhood center to teach residents how to save a life in a medical emergency–by learning how to stop bleeding and provide hands-only CPR, until EMS arrives. The interactive training sessions are offered at no cost to participants and are designed to teach how to save a life in the community, home or workplace. The first session will be held at the Daniel’s Hill Neighborhood Center on Tuesday, 10/22 at 6:00pm.

Since 2013, Daniel’s Hill Center has hosted Preschool Play Group with the support of Hutcherson Early Learning Program. Story-time, play-time, snack, outdoor play, and socialization are all part of the mix. This group is for children, age birth to five, with their responsible adult caregiver. We plan to expand playgroup to a second site in the fall of 2019. Bring your little one to play and participate in a peer support network for parents–all in the comfort of a neighborhood setting.

Create one-of-a-kind holiday ornaments in this two day workshop.

DANCE

BALLET AND MODERN DANCE Modern dance is an American dance form started in the early 1900’ that uses ballet steps, but is more fluid and free. Dancers are barefoot and individual expression and creativity is encouraged. Students will learn ballet steps and positions, but dance them in a modern dance style based on the technique of Merce Cunningham, an early American modern dance pioneer. Students dance barefoot and can wear footless tights/leggings and either a leotard or t-shirt. Hair should be secured so it is not a distraction while dancing. Register 3 days in advance.

CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Ages 8–18 Interested in creating a customized dance, but didn’t know where to start? Join us for our “Chance Dance” choreography workshop based on the choreographic methods of Merce Cunningham. Participants will use Chance methods like rolling dice and flipping coins to create a dance using movements that everyone can do. AFRO–CARIBBEAN DANCE Afro-Caribbean unites dance, rhythm, and live drumming. It creates an environment and dance community that nurtures, heals, renews, and inspires the body and spirit. Participants will engage their core and use full body isolations to stretch, firm and tone the entire body while learning authentic Afro-Caribbean dance moves. Dancers are barefoot which gives participants more of a connection and unity with the earth and an uninhibited ease with which to move.

Enjoy a fun, active date night hosted by Lynchburg Lindy Hop! Couples will learn the art of swing dance and how to improve communication with your dance partner. Class will feature step by step instruction from Timothy Rosales and Abby Clapham, leaders of Lynchburg Lindy, as well as energetic swing music. No previous experience needed. Price per couple. Lynchburg Lindy Hop hosts an all day workshop featuring four swing classes. Classes will include Introduction to Swing Dance, Let’s Learn Some New Moves, Intermediate Lindy Hop, and Swing Out Improvement! No experience or partner needed. Class partners will rotate. Breaks will be given after every class, including a lunch break.

Beginner and intermediate potters welcome! Beginner potters will get introduced to a studio setting, and will be instructed on wheel throwing and beginner handbuilding. Intermediate potters are welcome to work on their own independent projects, both hand built and wheel. Outside clay and glazes must be approved before firing.

We are now holding an open studio time for pottery and stained glass! Wheels, tools, slab rollers, and glaze will be available for pottery participants. Stained glass participant are welcome to use all cutters, grinders and solders. Art Studio Manager, Rachel Smith, will be on hand to answer any questions. Outside clay and glazes must be approved before use. Cost is $5 per drop in, and if pieces are left to be fired, an additional $5 will be added to the fee per pound. Take a step back in time by visiting the historic Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum followed by lunch at the Lynchburg Community Market.

Next, take a glimpse into the culture and history of African Americans in the Lynchburg area. Fee includes transportation and museum entry fees. Lunch is on your own at the market or bring your own lunch (cooler provided). Register by 9/24.

Join us for a holiday shopping spree at Friendly Center outdoor shopping mall in Greensboro, NC, which features over 150 stores and a food court to buy lunch. Transportation, road snacks, and good company are all provided. Lunch is on your own. Bus will leave promptly at 8:30am from the Templeton Center back parking lot. It takes two hours to drive to the mall and then the group will meet back together at a designated spot at 2:30pm. Register by 11/11.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL HIKE & FOLIAGE TOUR Ages 18+ Enjoy an easy hike on the Appalachian Trail amongst the beautiful fall foliage. Hike will begin at the Foot Bridge in Snowden, where the trail crosses the James River, and continue the path along the river, returning along the same route. Trail is mostly flat, with no hard climbs or treacherous footing. Bring a picnic basket for lunch on the Parkway.
