Happy Spring State Games of America is coming to Lynchburg this summer – July 27–August 4. The City of Lynchburg has teamed up with Liberty University to host the State Games of America, featuring 54 different sports. The City will reap the economic impact of at least 15,000 athletes (tourists) spending money in Lynchburg. Already 1,500 hotel room nights (triple the number of the Virginia Commonwealth Games) have been booked by athletes from 36 different states. Winning a State Games national title is especially sweet since only the medal winners from the other state games are eligible to participate in State Games of America.

Lynchburgers young and old will be able to compete and maybe win a State Games of America Gold Medal. Details about how to participate in State Games of America can be found at www.stategamesofamerica.com.

During the State Games, the City will showcase one of our favorite natural resources, the historic James River. For the first time, a kayaking competition will be held on the James River. The nine-mile course starts in downtown Lynchburg, finishing on Mt. Athos Road, with ample parking for racers and fans. Racers will navigate class 1 rapids and several flat stretches of slack water with shallow shoals and rocky areas. A big thank you to Rob Campbell and the James River Association for organizing this kayaking event.

This program guide introduces new Miller Park Pool public swim hours to better accommodate the public and elevate children’s safety in the many summer camps; the two swim times have been separated. Summer camp only swim time will operate from 11-12:45 every weekday with public only swim from 1-6pm on weekdays. We still have the most affordable pool admission fee in the area as well as a high diving board.

Back by popular demand, Miller Park Pool will host the 2nd Annual Great Cardboard Boat Race. This guide also features our Paddle Camp, the very popular PLAY Camp, Square Dancing at Riverfront Park, Sibshops and much, much more.

The Friends of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation (FLPR) group will host their Annual meeting on June 20. Park and trail lovers and the public are encouraged to attend. The meeting will feature a Creekside Trail Restoration update and a presentation of the Langhorne Trestle Project which will connect the Ed Page Entrance of the James River Heritage Trail with the Linkhorne Middle School parking lot. The ground breaking for this project is scheduled to take place in September. We have lots of exciting news that will be covered in the Director’s Report at the FLPR meeting.

Finally, please help us bid farewell to Lynchburg Community Market Manager, Jennifer Kennedy as she begins the next chapter of her life with her new family in North Carolina. We will miss the architect of the “Lynchburg is for Locavores” and “We Got the Beet” campaigns.

ARCHERY MINI-CAMP Ages 8–17 Whether you have never picked up a bow or have tried once or twice at school, this three day mini-camp session will teach you the basics of archery and give you time on the range to practice. Participants will be introduced to parts of the bow and arrow, different types of bows, and how to safely handle and use the equipment. LOCAL SUPERHEROES! EMERGENCY SERVICES CAMP Grades 3–6 Not all superheroes wear capes. Every day local men and women go above and beyond to keep our citizens healthy and safe. Campers will have the unique opportunity to travel to different locations each day and engage with members of law enforcement, fire and rescue and other essential city services. “BROADWAY HERE I COME!” INTRO TO THEATER CAMP Grades 1–12 The Unified Theatre Company is hosting a two-week immersive theatre camp to allows youth of all ages the opportunity to experience all parts of the craft, from technical theater to on stage performance. Thespians will write their own scenes, perform Broadway musicals songs and dance, learn stage makeup, create set pieces, design programs and posters, and an introduction on creating resumes, head-shots, and much more! Students will work independently in grade groups and collectively to present a showcase of their work for family and friends on Friday, 6/21 at 6:00pm. Tickets for the show are $5.00.

FARM TO TABLE MASTER CHEF Grades 5–8 Jump on the band wagon and learn how to incorporate fresh produce into home recipes. Aspiring chefs will explore the use of fresh produce from the garden at the Miller Center and campers will visit Great Day Gardens to see where and how local food is grown. On the final day each team will have to bring their creativity and test their skills as they will be given a mystery box of items to create a meal to present at the end of class. Supplies provided. Enjoy the serenity of Ivy Creek Park’s Clemmons Lake. Whether you venture out on the water in a canoe or kayak, fish from the pier, or enjoy a picnic lunch on the shore, Ivy Creek Park has an adventure for everyone!

Visit the Cabin at Ivy Creek Park that highlights our native wetland and aquatic habitats. Check out an “Explore Backpack” during your visit to the park. Perfect for kids who love to investigate, each pack contains a magnifying glass, net, bug containers, and animal ID cards.

PADDLE CAMP Ages 8–12 Get ready for a fun, action-packed week on the water filled with paddlesports, skill building and teamwork. Campers will explore the basics of canoeing and kayaking while learning how to stay safe on the water. Mon, Wed & Fri we’ll be paddling at Ivy Creek Park. The stream between the bridges at Peaks View Park and Clemmons Lake at Ivy Creek Park will be stocked with trout 3 times from April 1–June 15 by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Youth-Only Stocked Trout Program.

Only youth age 15 and younger will be allowed to fish during that time period.

Limit 3 fish per day. No lure restrictions.

Located in the heart of the Midtown neighborhood, Miller Center opened to the public again in 2015 after a two-year renovation process. Now one of the greenest, most energy-efficient buildings in the City of Lynchburg, Miller Center is also home to a new 186-seat theatre, beautifully renovated classrooms, commercial kitchen, and the Nature Zone Environmental Education Center. The historic building also houses the main administrative offices of Parks and Rec and is completely accessible with a new elevator, improved walkways and parking, as well as a new pedestrian crossing into historic Miller Park near the Aviary.

Help your child improve their swimming skills while bonding with other children in our American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Classes vary in length depending on the class level and age of participants.

Speckled pottery is becoming all the rage in the pottery world! Come create your own custom speckled succulent pot in this two day workshop, where each participant will get to throw their own pot during session one and choose and plant a succulent during session two. Seating is limited. Register by 8/27.

We are now holding an open studio time for pottery and stained glass! Wheels, tools, slab rollers, and glaze will be available for pottery participants. Stained glass participant are welcome to use all cutters, grinders and solders. Art Studio Manager, Rachel Smith, will be on hand to answer any questions. Outside clay and glazes must be approved before use. Cost is $5 per drop in, and if pieces are left to be fired, an additional $5 will be added to the fee per pound. Stained glass participants must be currently registered in a class to participate. Dropins welcome!
