A L E TT E R FROM J EN N I F ER J ON ES FOCUS ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS THROUGH THE ARTS Health and wellness are important benefits that Parks and Recreation provide to the community. From painting to dancing, creative activities not only make your life more fun, but they also do wonders for your health. As you may have guessed from the guide cover, this winter guide features over 40 art classes plus the Annual Art Expo. Painting, sculpting, building, singing, dancing, writing, and other creative outlets express our thoughts and feelings and provide food for the soul. So, we encourage you to step outside your comfort zone into the place where personal growth and magic truly happen, and register to throw a pot, broaden your horizons at adult art camp, flex your voice at open mic, or groove on over to the Aviary for the Soul Train Dance Party. Beginners are welcome and bad moods will be transformed.

“The arts are an opportunity to express what we think, what we feel, what we love or hate, what we hope, what we want to change, what we want from the future and admire from the past, and whatever else might move us. It's part of humanity to want and need to express those things. Not having the arts is like living in a black and white world when color is an option.” Lori Steinbach

SAFE AND EQUAL ACCESS FOR ALL Social Equity, advocating for safe and equal access to parks and recreation for all, is one of three pillars of parks and recreation. Since we have chosen to focus on social equity over the next two years, you will find that our programs around Therapeutic Recreation are expanding. We are especially excited to announce Sibshops; Facilitator Training and Sibling Workshop on March 6th and 7th. Sibshops were created as an opportunity for brothers and sisters of children with special needs and developmental needs to find peer support and education within a recreation setting. Also included under this pillar are many programs at our Neighborhood Centers, such as “Black Minds Matter”, “Thriving Communities Public Dialogue” and “Securing the Skills” programming. LYNCHBURG’S AWARD-WINNING PARKS & RECREATION I never get tired of bragging about our department achievements. At the Annual Virginia Parks and Recreation Society banquet in November 2018, our department stole the show AGAIN. This is the second year that the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department earned more awards than any of the other 110 park and recreation departments in Virginia. You can see our department super stars on the next page. This program guide should go a long way to helping you Find Your Fun this winter and spring. Thank you Lynchburg for supporting our department, without you, we wouldn’t exist and there would be no awards. I hope you are proud of your parks and recreation department. Naturally yours,

Jennifer Jones, Director Lynchburg Parks and Recreation

CREEKSIDE TRAIL UPDATE On August 2, 2018, due to a massive amount of rain in a very short time, the City of Lynchburg was hit with flash flooding which resulted in all of our parks and trails suffering major damage. Three bridges were washed out along with over 300 downed trees, 40 new sandbars, 45 areas of stream bank erosion and tons of debris. The damage was estimated at 5.3 million dollars and FEMA funding is no longer an option, unfortunately. While we have had numerous volunteers for workdays, and donations to the Creekside Trail Rx Program since then, it is still going to be a long road back to prestorm conditions. In an effort to have the most up-to-date information while these restoration efforts are ongoing, we plan to soon have an interactive map hosted on our website showing the current closures. As such, we would like to remind those using our trails that barricades are placed for your safety. Please do not remove any barricades or signage relating to sections of the trails being closed. Winning artists will be announced in April 2019 and will have until May 1, 2019 to complete installation.

WHY THIS RULE?

W H E R E C I T Y PA R K S & P L A N T E T H I C S M E E T

T

he sight of a field of wildflowers brings Monet paintings to mind and is a powerful link which binds our human development to the earth. There is an inherent desire to stroke the petals and prolong the tactile experience by carrying away a memento of our journey as we pass from childhood to adulthood by harvesting a single wildflower amid a beautiful butterfly-filled meadow or along a public wooded trail lined with bloodroot, cardinal flower, columbine, or lady's slipper. It is because we convey such memories that we have devoted public lands within the City to protecting wildflowers. Thousands of people visit these municipal parklands each year and if only a small fraction of them plucked a few flowers, soon there would be none for the rest of us to enjoy. Wildflowers are a fragile flower, with many unable to survive the shock of being picked and perishing soon after. The repercussions of wildflower collecting over time by heedless individuals extends beyond the flower populations themselves. Since they are a keystone species, a critical chain of events would be triggered once wildflower populations drop below a given threshold, while the consequences would impact the local community for years to come. Indeed, wildflowers support entire ecosystems for pollinators, such as bats, birds, and other small animals on the micro scale. Butterflies and other insects, small birds, and animals depend on seeds, nectar, and pollen for their food supply and life support system. In addition, some pollinators have limited mobility or home ranges, or may be reliant on a single plant species for their sustenance or habitat. The Parks Division is thrilled with the public’s increased interest in native plants found within City Parks and Open Space. This interest and increased knowledge and awareness of the benefits of native landscaping and gardening with native plants has resulted in local nurseries producing more native plants for the

60

public to grow. Landscaping and gardening with native plants has many benefits including the creation of habitat for many different animals; from pollinators to birds, to small mammals. Many folks are now planting butterfly gardens that benefit these beautiful animals and bring enjoyment and joy to the gardener. Unfortunately, our municipal Parks are experiencing increased poaching of native wildflowers; even some that are listed as endangered species. Some people desire species that are not available commercially because these plants are difficult to grow or take too many years to reach maturity; and a select sub-group desire the rarest of the rare bringing those precious jewels ever closer to extinction. Consequently, some individuals have been removing wildflowers and other native plants from their natural habitats. In some cases entire populations of a species have been stolen. There are four main consequences to this illegal activity: • All living organisms need to reproduce. Digging up wildflowers, picking wildflowers, or collecting their seed will reduce a plant's ability to reproduce and will adversely affect its long-term survival in that location • Removing wildflowers from the wild can adversely affect pollinators and other animals that depend on that species for food and cover • Removing wildflowers from our parkland and open spaces prevents other visitors from enjoying our natural heritage • Most wildflowers when dug from their natural habitat do not survive being transplanted Remember, while visiting City of Lynchburg Parks or Open Space respect and protect wildflowers and their habitats, leave only footprints, and take only memories and photos so that future generations may enjoy our precious natural heritage.
