HISTORIC COBB HARBOUR BACKDROP FOR ANOTHER MAJOR MOVIE LYME Regis is reportedly set to become the backdrop for another major movie production.

It is understood that scenes for Warner Bros and the Roald Dahl Story Co’s upcoming film ‘Wonka’ are set to be filmed at the town’s historic Cobb harbour next month, with fishermen and businesses in the area offered a sum to cover disruption to their work.

is set to star as the iconic inventor Willy Wonka in this new adaptation based on characters created by Roald Dahl for his novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

The story will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening his famous chocolate factory, with several musical numbers set to feature in the film.

This marks the third time Warner Bros has taken on the Willy Wonka story. The first in 1971 starred Gene Wilder and the second in 2005 starred Johnny Depp in the lead role.

Plot details are unknown but there are unconfirmed reports that the filming in Lyme Regis will include a snow scene on the Cobb with the steam drifter ‘Lydia Eva’ visiting the harbour for the production.

Council to hand out £43,000 in Cobb harbour to grants to local organisations, but feature in new Willy Wonka film LymeForward funding delayed LYME Regis Town Council has approved grant agreements totalling £43,000 for six local organisations, but LymeForward will have to wait for its funding as councillors decided they needed to discuss this further.

The annual grants were initially approved for a five-year period in February 2020, but the council reviews its agreements with beneficiaries on a yearly basis.

At last week’s full council meeting – the first meeting following the summer recess – members agreed to go forward with this year’s grants as follows: £1,500 for transport service Axe Valley and West Dorset Ring & Ride, £5,000 for youth music charity B Sharp, £4,500 for Bridport and District Citizens Advice, £10,000 for The Hub, managed by Lyme Regis Development Trust, and £22,000 for the Marine Theatre, run by LymeArts Community Trust.

The council noted that COVID-19 restrictions meant that grant recipients had not been able to act in accordance with their initial grant applications, but moving into a post-COVID era meetings had been held with all organisations to consider future compliance with their grant agreements.

It was reported that, while a meeting had been held with LymeForward, the council still had to identify specific objectives for the community interest company and it was

therefore agreed to delay its funding of £10,000.

The objectives are expected to be set by the Tourism, Community & Publicity Committee on September 29, an can then be included in the grant agreement for further consideration.

Earlier this year, town councillor Belinda Bawden raised concerns about the management of LymeForward, which runs the town’s foodbank and other community projects.

In particular, Cllr Bawden, who was the council’s representative on the organisation, said there had been a “lack of governance” and high turnover of volunteers, staff and directors at LymeForward.

This resulted in a public spat with chair of LymeForward, Sue Davies, who accused Cllr Bawden of an “unremitting campaign of serious victimisation, intimidation and persecution”.

She made two formal complaints against Cllr Bawden to Dorset Council’s monitoring officer, both of which were deemed to be unfounded, but Cllr Bawden was replaced as the council’s representative on LymeForward

This will be the third time in three years that Lyme Regis has played host to a major movie production.

Scenes from ‘Ammonite’, based on the town’s famous fossil hunter Mary Anning, were filmed in Lyme Regis in 2019, with Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and costar Saoirse Ronan causing much excitement.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ star Dakota Johnson was spotted in Lyme Regis filming scenes for a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’ in June of this year.

The Cobb has previously been included in several versions of ‘Persuasion’ and most famously featured in the opening scene of ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ - the 1981 film adaptation of Lyme Regis author John Fowles’ novel.

Candles on the Cobb to return in 2022

Photo by Ben Kapur CANDLES on the Cobb – one of the most spectacular events in the South West’s summer calendar – will return to Lyme Regis next year.

The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis will stage the event on Sunday, August 28 2022 with more than 5,000 candles set to light up the town’s historic Cobb harbour, each available to buy in memory of a loved one.

It is expected to be particularly poignant after the traumatic effect of the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Candles on the Cobb was the brainchild of former town crier Phil Street and deputy harbourmaster Mike Higgs and was first staged in 2000.

It was held a further five times up until 2015, raising a total of more than £118,000

for national and local charities.

The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis then took over the organisation of the iconic event and staged it again in 2018, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, when it raised more than £10,000 for the Royal British Legion and local youth organisations.

It was hoped that the event could be held

again in 2020 but this was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MP thanks St John Ambulance volunteers for help in pandemic West Dorset MP Chris Loder welcomed volunteers from St John Ambulance to Westminster last week, to thank them for their incredible work supporting the NHS throughout the pandemic. Among the guests was Carole Lawrence-Parr, chief president of St John Ambulance and West Dorset constituent, and Mr Loder personally thanked her for everything the organisation has done. Council’s backlog of information requests could cost £86k to rectify IMPROVING Dorset Council’s ‘poor’ response to information requests could cost up to £86,000 to rectify. The authority often fails to meet the 20-working day target to respond to Freedom of Information requests, currently running at between 100 and 150 each month, many relating to children’s services. The council needs the equivalent of two full time staff, to bring it to meet targets and would have to spend further money to manage the backlog of work.

Staff shortages and COVID affecting waste collections THE effects of the national HGV driver shortage, coupled with the continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, are starting to be felt across Dorset Council’s waste services as collection rounds feel the strain.

As recently reported in the national press, the impact of the driver shortage is being felt by councils across the country.

In Dorset, some crews are regularly having to work overtime and often at weekends, which is not sustainable.

These pressures also come on the back of a year of increased household waste amounts as more people stay and work from home.

Dorset Council senior officers recently briefed local MPs on the issues currently impacting waste collections, street cleansing and bin deliveries, in the hope that a longterm solution can be found.

Recruitment of drivers in Dorset has always been challenging, particularly due to high local housing costs, but the current wide-scale staff shortages across all depots are unprecedented.

The council currently has multiple vacancies for drivers and loaders across their waste services team, along with some absence due to sickness and others on planned annual leave.

All employees across waste services are working hard to ensure that key waste services continue to run throughout this challenging time.

The council is having to temporarily suspend or delay some garden

waste collections so that crews can be redeployed to support vital rubbish, food and recycling collections.

Litter bins are also being emptied less frequently in some areas of the county, and new bin deliveries are also being delayed.

While the council continues to work on tackling the problem, residents are being kindly asked to note the following: ● Always report your missed collection, even if your whole street is affected. The council website has an automated system that will inform you what’s happening with your bins and provide guidance on what to do next. ● Please ensure your bins are out by 6am on your collection day.

Some rounds are being carried out differently, meaning that we might turn up earlier or later in the day than usual. ● If you find a litter bin is full, do not try to leave your litter on top/next to it or on the floor nearby – please take it home and place in your household bin. The council also encourages people to report overfilled bins on the Dorset Council website. ● If any garden waste collections have to be cancelled/stood down,

the council will contact customers directly to advise them. As compensation for any garden waste collections you did not receive, the council will automatically apply a discount to next year’s subscription fee. ● Rubbish, recycling, garden and food waste can be dropped off free of charge at any of Dorset’s household recycling centres, which are operating as normal.

Cllr Jill Haynes, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Customer and Community Services, said: “Emptying the bins for almost 380,000 Dorset residents will obviously present challenges from time to time, and we are proud to provide one of the best kerbside collection services in the country under normal circumstances. But I’m afraid the current situation is both unprecedented and unsustainable.

“While we will continue to ensure that Dorset’s waste is dealt with as best we can and do whatever is necessary to address local concerns, we need action to be taken by central government to address the national driver shortage and help to mitigate the continuing effects of the pandemic.”

Lyme shown off to its very best in spectacular sail past SUMMER may be coming to end, but there is certainly no shortage of things to do.

Last weekend I had no less than eight events to cover – one of my busiest weekends since the start of the pandemic – but I saved the very best for last, joining Lyme Regis Sailing Club for their 100th anniversary sail past on Sunday morning.

It was a perfect September morning – the town still bathed in sunshine but with a sense of calm and space to breathe after the hectic holiday season. It has to be

WILD cafe Kaupeka popped up in Trinity Woods, near Lyme Regis, this summer and, while it has now had to move to its winer location of the nearby car park, rather than amid the trees, it continues to take the local foodie scene by storm, serving delicious coffee, cakes and weekend brunch over the fire pit.

WATER polo will return to Lyme Regis this weekend with an exhibition match to be held in Victoria Pool, off the historic Cobb wall, on Sunday (September 19). Local teams Bridport Barracudas and the Southwest All Stars will go head to head, starting at 4pm.

one of my favourite times of the year.

The sailing club’s centenary year has unfortunately been plagued by the coronavirus pandemic, with celebrations having to be postponed time and time again, but members have not let that ruin this momentous occasion and have remained in high spirits throughout.

Finally on Sunday they were able to go ahead with what has been a longplanned event, and I arrived at the clubhouse comment-

ing on what a glorious day it was – a clear giveaway that I have never been a sailor as everyone else was far more concerned with the lack of wind, rather than the spectacular sunshine.

But again, they didn’t let that get them down and were determined to push ahead – even if it meant the dinghys had to be towed.

The club’s honorary secretary and former mayor Sally Holman had invited me to join club members and special guests out on the water.

It was a hark back to one of my very first jobs as a nervous, 18year-old trainee reporter, when Sally strapped me into a life jacket and sent me out to sea to photograph national sailing races in the bay.

This time club member David Beer and I joined harbourmaster James Radcliffe aboard his rib, allowing us to photograph the boats sailing past special guests, including the mayor and mayoress, and the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, and his wife.

Fortunately, a gentle sea breeze picked up just in time to allow the dinghys to sail past unaided and it made for a spectacular sight from both the water and I’m told from the shore too.

As well as their skills on the water, the sailing club members showed off their warm hospitality back on dry land, with speeches and toasts made at the clubhouse.

This really was Lyme Regis putting its best foot forward and what a lasting impression the town must have made on the Lord Lieutenant.

Congratulations to all at Lyme Regis Sailing Club, and as was said many a time on Sunday - here’s to the next 100 years!

Let’s make Lyme the floral town of Dorset I

HAVE long been a great admirer of the town council’s gardening staff, who often have to work under difficult circumstances.

Not so long ago I wrote in this column that I had never seen the town cemetery looking in such good order and the public gardens and seafront floral displays have been admired and praised by many.

At last the BIG Breakfast will go ahead AT LAST! Having had to cancel on two previous occasions due to the epidemic, the Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK will be staging their popular Big Breakfast next Friday (September 24).

The doors of the Woodmead Halls will open at 8am for the early risers and they will be serving a full English, bacon baps and sausage sandwiches right through to 1pm. It is not necessary to book - just turn up.

This will be the first event by the Lyme branch since February 2000 and they are hoping that their usual supporters will turn out in force.

Vegetarian and gluten free options will be available.

I will be writing that in the future), LymeOnline was planning to relaunch the town’s popular garden competition, which ceased several years ago. We had even arranged for a sponsor to meet the costs of trophies and prize money and had provisional discussions with the council on how they might be able to support the initiative.

Then along came COVID...

In recent times, many local towns have upped their game when it comes to floral decorations during the summer months. Lyme is as good as most, with the exception of Sidmouth, which has won many prizes in the national Britain In Bloom competition over the years.

Back in the distant past when I was editing the Sidmouth Herald (now a shadow of its former self) I organised reciprocal visits between Sidmouth, winner of the small town Britain In Bloom award, and Harrogate, winner of the large town category.

It was hugely successful and led to a number of friendships being created between those with a love for horticulture.

I am not suggesting that Lyme should be entering the Britain In Bloom contests, although the town did at one time and won a number of minor awards. However, from small acorns...

Reviving the local floral competitions, I think, would receive great support from gardeners and traders and encourage greater pride in our town. Prizes would be awarded in various categories covering all sections of the community and it might be possible to involve local school children in the project.

The idea would be to form a local committee of green-fingered volunteers to get things moving when life returns to normal.

I’m hoping to meet with Councillor Reynolds, chairman of the Tourism, Community and Publicity Committee, soon to discuss how the council may be able to assist. It would be good publicity for all concerned.

They’re going Wonka nuts down at the Cobb LYME’S greatest asset - the sheer beauty of the town - continues to attract national publicity.

Hardly a week passes when one of the national Sunday papers does not give a generous mention on their holiday pages to Lyme and, as we report on page one, the town continues to attract film crews looking for that special location.

There is great excitement down at the Cobb over

IT was with great sadness that I read in the Sunday Times that Yeovil-based comedian Jimmy Quinn had died, aged 75.

I knew Jimmy well and had booked him to appear at a number of sporting dinners I have organised down the years in Lyme and elsewhere.

The last one was three years ago when he was the main guest and speaker at a fundraising dinner at Lyme Regis Football Club in aid of Uplyme and Lyme Regis Cricket Club.

Jimmy had lived in Yeovil from the age of 15. He was a good footballer and at one time cap-

tained Yeovil Golf Club.

As those who were present at his last Lyme Regis appearance will remember, he was a very funny chap.

He was a Falklands veteran who kept his shipmates’ morale high when they were under attack by telling jokes, experience he put to good use in civvy street when he worked the comedy circuit for many years.

It would have been nice to report that he died peacefully surrounded by his family.

In fact, he died from pneumonia back in February not long after a coronavirus out-

break in his care home. His family were only allowed to visit him behind glass screens and had to sell his home to pay for his care.

His daughter Natalie was quoted in the Sunday Times as saying: “He suffered a horrible end to his life in a nursing home.”

It was alleged that staff were seen close to him on New Year’s Eve while not wearing masks. An investigation has been carried out into claims that Jimmy was left with bed sores for more that 12 hours without being moved, despite being very high risk.

New team vicar Dorset rates remain below national average for Lyme Regis COVID-19: The latest on local coronavirus figures

CORONAVIRUS case rates across Dorset remain below the national and South West average, according to the latest figures.

As of September 10 there were 1,219 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Dorset Council area, a slight increase from 1,089 the previous week, and 1,186 in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) area, a decrease from 1,231 on September 3.

This means the case rate per 100,000 people was 321.0 in the Dorset Council area, compared to 286.7 the previous week, and 298.7 in the BCP area, compared to 310.1.

Both of these are below the South West and national average, which currently stands at 374.

There were 40 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across Dorset, compared to 48 in the previous

update on September 3.

As of September 5, 1,138,904 doses of the COVID-19 vaccination had been administered in Dorset.

A spokesperson for Public Health Dorset said: “This week we have seen a slight rise in COVID19 cases in the Dorset Council area this week and a small decline in COVID-19 case rates across the BCP Council area.

“Both Dorset Council and BCP Council case rates are below the average for the South West and England.

“Hospitalisations related to COVID-19 have remained at around 40-50 since the beginning of August, with 40 people currently in hospital with COVID-19.

Police warn of possible scam in car park POLICE are warning residents about a suspicious incident in a Lyme Regis car park, in which two women tried to claim money for supposed damage to their car from another driver.

An elderly local resident was approached by two well-spoken females in a Lyme Regis car park and one claimed that the resident had damaged her vehicle, pointing to a scratch on one side.

The resident was disbelieving as the car park was quiet when they parked their vehicle and they had parked it with ease.

The woman said that due to the small amount of damage to the car it would not make sense for the resident to go through their insurance company, and estimated that it would cost about £200 to repair the scratch and said she would get a quote and phone them.

A few hours later, the resident received a

phone call from the woman, who said she had received an estimate to repair the damage and had been advised she needed a new car door, costing £2,000.

The resident was alarmed and sceptical and the incident was reported to the police.

Local drivers are warned to stay vigilant as similar car scams have been reported in other parts of the country with thieves claiming fellow motorists have damaged their vehicles purely in a bid to obtain cash from them.

THE Reverend Sarah Godfrey, the new Team Vicar in the Golden Cap Benefice, who will be based in Lyme Regis, was welcomed by her new congregation at a special service in St Andrew’s Church, Charmouth.

The licensing was carried out by the Right Reverend Karen Gorham, Bishop of Sherborne.

She was welcomed to the benefice by a number of community leaders, including the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE. The Reverend Godfrey grew up in the Chilterns where her father was a churchwarden.

She met her husband, Jonathan, in the early 1980s when they were both studying at Southampton Uiversity. They have two children, a son and daughter.

The Reverend Godfrey was ordained at Salisbury Cathedral in 2005.

She served as a curate in Puddetown and associate priest, moving in 2014 to Milborne Port as Rector.

The Reverend Godfrey loves working in schools and has worked on vocation teams in both Salisbury and Bath and Wells.

Sailing club continues centenary celebrations in September sunshine

LYME Regis Sailing Club was blessed with spectacular sunshine for its 100th anniversary sail past on Sunday morning.

Although there wasn’t much wind for sailing, the weather made for a spectacular sight as dozens of dinghies and cruisers, accompanied by two of the town’s gigs, the lifeboat crew and harbourmaster, made their way onto the water.

They each sailed past a boat of special guests, including Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, and his wife Carola, the Mayor and Mayoress of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian and Wendy Larcombe, and sailing club commodore Rob Wiscombe.

Guests then returned to dry land where the celebrations continued with speeches and toasts.

The mayor spoke about the his-

tory of the club, having learnt more about it in its special centenary book ‘The First 100 Years’ compiled by Hilton Davies, and its important role in the life of the town.

The celebrations were attended

by Ray Smith, an inaugural member of Lyme Regis Gig Club, who is 101 years old – five months older than the sailing club.

Meanwhile, the club’s keen members remained on the water and battled the lack of wind to take part in the annual Bart’s Bash races, an annual national event held in memory of Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson MBE, to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Foundation which supports sailing projects across the globe.

A collection for the charity was also held back at the clubhouse.

Charmouth councillor calls for quicker action to cut carbon emissions in Dorset A CHARMOUTH parish councillor has called for Dorset Council to step up its commitment to tackling climate change.

A public question put to this month’s Dorset Council Cabinet meeting asked the authority to follow the example of neighbours, Wiltshire and Somerset, and sign up to the UK100 pledge to bring council emissions to zero earlier than currently planned.

Charmouth parish councillor Andrew Carey said in his question: “Cllr Ray Bryan has publicly stated his intention to make Dorset the greenest county in England.

“The UK100 pledge says: ‘We will bring our council emissions to Net Zero by 2030 and we will work with our residents and businesses to bring our wider communities’ emissions in line with Net Zero as soon as possible (and by 2045 at the latest).’

“Dorset Council’s target dates of 2040 and 2050 fall well short of this pledge.

“Wiltshire Council, Somerset County Council and Cornwall Council are among 13 county councils that have already signed the UK100 pledge (as well as many district, town and city councils). Dorset Council has not.

“Dorset is therefore not even among the 13 greenest counties in England.

“Given the urgent call for action in the IPCC’s latest Climate Change report, will Dorset Council now support Cllr Bryan’s aspiration and sign the UK100 pledge?”

Plans to convert village shop back to into residential use A BUSINESS in The Street, Charmouth, could be converted back to residential use if Dorset planners agree.

An application has been lodged this week for a change of use to Langley House, until recently used as a gift shop and coffee bar.

Applicant Magda Perrett says in the application that she would like to change the use of the shop back to residential to integrate it with living accommodation upstairs.

“The shop still has an internal doorway into our entrance hallway on the ground floor.,” the application states.

“The change would enable us to have ground floor living space with easier access to our rear garden.”

The changes include removing the shop window and replacing it with a bay window to match the one on the other side of the door – which a planning agent says will better ‘balance’ the building delivering a positive outcome to the look of the building.

Public comments on the application remain open until October 11.

Drama on the Charmouth bypass

RESIDENT IN DISPUTE WITH HIGHWAYS ENGLAND AFTER TAKING VERGE CLEARANCE ISSUES INTO HIS OWN HANDS A CHARMOUTH man is being threatened with legal action for flytipping, after clearing a verge on the A35 of seeding ragwort and delivering it to the office of National Highways, claiming that their contractor is not doing the job sufficiently.

Having raised concerns about the management of the verges on the Charmouth bypass back in 2018, John Calder volunteered to help National Highways, formerly known as Highways England, develop a comprehensive plan – something he described as an “enormous and challenging workload – which balanced the control of weeds and encouraged biodiversity.

But now he says that National Highways’ contractor is not fulfilling its obligations, and the organisation is reluctant to confront and resolve the issue.

In particular, Mr Calder is concerned about the possible spread of seeding ragwort into neighbouring grazing pastures. The weed is poisonous and produces large numbers of seeds which are easily dispersed by the wind and can be particularly harmful to cattle and horses.

Mr Calder felt so strongly about the issue that he took matters into his own hands and spent hours cutting back the ragwort during August, filming himself to demonstrate the issue to the regional director of National Highways.

He also made three deliveries of the cuttings to national Highways’ offices in Exeter in a bid to get the organisation to take notice, but he has now been threatened with legal action for fly-tipping.

Mr Calder has now raised a formal complaint about how the entire situation has been handled.

He said: “Some considerable progress has been made on the wildflower enhancement front, but their contractor's control of rag-

“Despite the enormous unpaid effort that I have put into generating an appropriately balanced programme in collaboration with them, National Highways hope to solve their ragwort problem by simply blocking any further contact between me and their staff.

“So far, I have delivered three truck loads of seeding high risk ragwort that I have cut from their verges here at Charmouth to prove to them the extent by which their contractor is not fulfilling their obligations.

“National Highways claim their ragwort control process is endorsed by Natural England but, if so, that endorsement only arose because I had intervened and cleared a bag of high-risk ragwort on October 4 2020, which happened to be a few days before a crucial Rural Payments Agency inspection.

“Their process was found to be effective last year only because I had intervened to mop up what the contractor had left undone.

“The contractor undertakes a risk assessment at the start of the season and is supposed to keep it alive through the summer.

“They are supposed to hand crop the ragwort flowers everywhere that high or medium risk ragwort arises and to make visits with sufficient frequency to catch regrowth (or late growth).

“The fact that they consistently fail to do it points to a disconnect between National Highways policy (compliance with the DEFRA Code of Practice on How to Prevent the Spread of Ragwort) and the contractor’s implementation of it.

There will be an identifiable disconnect between policy and practice but National Highways prefer to ignore it.”

Although acknowledging that progress had been made on improving biodiversity on the verges, Mr Calder has also raised concerns that grass cuttings are not being cleared correctly from the area, which prevents wildflowers from growing, and one section of the targeted verges had not been cut at all.

Andrew Page-Dove, National Highways’ South West regional director, said: “The way we manage our roadside verges along the A35 in Dorset is important to us and we take their maintenance seriously.

“This year we have taken steps to improve the biodiversity of the verges through a dedicated wildflower scheme, and we are in the process of spreading locally produced wildflower seeds and changing the way we cut verges to encourage growth.

“The A35 Grassland Management Scheme covers 15 sites along the

A35, a key contributor to National Highways’ target of no net loss of biodiversity across all of our activities by the end of the second road investment period, and we are listening to and working with local communities and organisations to achieve that.

“We balance the desire to increase wildflowers, while controlling more undesirable species, such as ragwort, and throughout the summer we have been acting and complying with DEFRA’s code of practice to control the spread of this weed species.”

Exhibition match to promote Lyme Regis water polo team AN exhibition water polo match will be held in Victoria Pool, off the historic Cobb wall in Lyme Regis, on Sunday, September 19.

Local teams Bridport Barracudas and the Southwest All Stars will go head to head in match which is hoped will spark interest in the sport in Lyme Regis with plans to launch a new team for seven to 60 year olds.

The match will be held at 4pm in the pool behind the aquarium and fishing college on the Cobb, and all are welcome to come along and see if they enjoy the game, ask questions and sign up for a training session or join the new Lyme Regis team.

The training will be held at Bridport Leisure Centre in an indoor pool, with the aim of practising in warmer months in the sea if the tide allows playing of volleyball to practice shots and moves if it doesn’t.

Lyme Regis already has its own water polo goal posts, donated through a town council grant to Lyme Splash, which has previously organised water polo championships in the town.

Lyme Splash is backing the new team and chair Karen Durham Diggins said: “Lyme Regis has a heritage of great water polo teams, and we are hoping we can encourage, kids, teenagers and adults to start a new era of water polo prowess or just come and have a good time, learn a new skill and get fit!

“Starting with a fledgling team training with Bridport Barracudas, we can help each other out

and then start building our own independent set of teams.

“We aim to have at least one team ready to play in next year’s Lyme Splash Sea Water Polo Championship.”

There are already volunteers who’ve stepped up to help, including keen swimmer Malcolm Greenslade and Lucy Watkinson of personal training company FitAgain. However, more helpers are needed to co-ordinate and run sessions or take a more leading role. Training for this is available.

Any ex-players who wish to re-hone their skills or would like to start coaching would be most welcome.

The club will be part of Swim England’s Water Polo with teams for seven to 11 year olds, 11 to 14 years and 14-plus.

Dance event explores climate change effects CROWDS gathered on Lyme Regis seafront this weekend to watch interpretive dance event Landance.

The event included two performances on Friday and Saturday, with dancers starting on Gun Cliff Walk and making their way along the seafront to the sand beach.

They were accompanied by City of Bristol Poet Vanessa Kisuule (pictured right), who has featured on Radio 1, ‘Woman’s Hour’, and ‘Blue Peter’, who performed a specially-written piece for the first time.

Funded by Arts Council England, Landance in Lyme explored the effects of climate change on coastal communities such as West Dorset and celebrated this exceptional stretch of Jurassic Coast.

The Jurassic Coast March will raise funds and awareness for The Rifles Regimental Trust’s Care for Casualties Appeal, supporting those from The Rifles with injuries and PTSD. Speaking on the cause, one of the organisers said: “Every year, we lose brothers and sisters who return from conflict that struggle with their demons and injuries and suffer from the dreaded PTSD, that ends in them taking their life.

“When you ask a veteran when they were last there, in many cases the answer would be ‘every night’.

“The military train you to go to war, but no one trains you to come home!”

The march will start at 9.30am at Lulworth Cove on Friday, September 17th with a Drumhead service at Lulworth Cove in remembrance to those lost.

Walkers will be staying overnight in Weymouth and West Bay before finishing in Lyme Regis on Sunday, September 19, expected to arrive from 3.30pm.

Lyme Regis granted the Freedom of the Borough to the Dorset Regiment in 1945, and today is one of 12 towns in Dorset which has granted Freedom to its successor regiment, The Rifles.

The county regiment marched through the town with full band and bugles in September 2018 as part of commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

WITH all the alarming news of extreme weather around the world, people are looking at ways they can reduce their carbon footprint.

This often means making changes at home, as about a quarter of our greenhouse gases are produced from our homes, mainly through heating.

This year, Dorset Climate Action Network (DCAN) is running an open homes event over two weekends in September and October, during which time about 50 homes across the county will open for a day to showcase how we can live greener lives.

Some of these are new houses built with very high levels of insulation, heat pumps and ventilation systems. Others have been retrofitted with extra insulation, solar panels and better windows.

Others are homes where people have made lifestyle changes – growing vegetables, wildlife friendly gardens, using cycles or electric cars, travelling less, reducing waste.

Whether you are planning a new building, improving your current one or want to pick up some tips on improving your fuel bills, you can talk to the people who have learnt from experience.

Sam Wilberforce of Transition Town Bridport, who has been organising Open EcoHomes in West Dorset for eight years, said: “Our hosts have a huge repository of knowledge, enthusiasm and expertise on energy saving measures. Visitors have returned inspired and informed about what they can do in their own homes.

“Many of the visitors return next year as greener homes hosts to showcase what they have achieved during the year.”

Play based on Mary Anning’s final days comes to the Marine Theatre A NEW play based on the life of famous Lyme Regis fossil hunter Mary Anning will be performed at the Marine Theatre next month.

AsOne Theatre Company will perform ‘Mary Anning: Lost in Time’, following Mary’s final days before she died from breast cancer, aged 46, in 1847.

Based in a stormy 19th century Lyme Regis, dying and increasingly dependent on laudanum, Mary reflects on her life.

By challenging the status quo whilst making remarkable strides in a male dominated scientific world, her work threatens to disprove the very foundations she was raised on.

Haunted by hallucinations of friends, enemies and even the creatures she spent her life hacking out of the living rock, Anning tries to make sense of her existence in her last moments.

AsOne bring their signature magical blend of narrative, movement, music and visuals to tell this true story about legacy and coming to terms with the past.

The play was written for AsOne by Peter John Cooper and is directed by Marta Vella, with music by Joe Butcher.

The play will be staged at the Marine Theatre, just steps from the site of Mary’s home – now Lyme Regis Museum – and overlooking the bay where she made her incredible discoveries, including the first full skeleton of an ichthyosaur.

The performance will be held on Wednesday, October 6 with the bar opening at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.

TV scriptwriter Andy writes new community play for hometown TELEVISION scriptwriter Andy Rattenbury has written another community play to be staged at the Marine Theatre in his hometown of Lyme Regis.

Following the success of ‘The Tempest’, ‘Monmouth’ and ‘125 Years at the Marine’, Andy (pictured) has written a new play called ‘Lyme and the Sea’ exploring the town’s close connections with the sea through the ages.

Through many songs, shanties and lively music, actors will celebrate the sea and tell the story.

There will be many parts and opportunities for local performers and community groups to get involved, similar to the show staged for the Marine’s 125th anniversary in 2019.

Organisers are also looking for a backstage crew, costume and makeup enthusiasts to work with them on the show.

Planning workshops in different skill sets

will be staged to make this a learning and supportive experience for everyone, including young people.

The next step will be a preview meeting to share more information, to be held at the Marine Theatre on October 10 at 5pm and October 13 at 6pm.

Casting will then be held in early December and weekly rehearsals will start in January, later moving to twice weekly rehearsals including some weekends after the February half term.

Organiser Tracey Blech said: “So put these dates in your diaries and come along to one of the preview meetings to find out more and meet the team.

“We want to tell you about the play and the parts and give more detail about auditions.

Council’s ‘lack of interest in flagship Jubilee Pavilion is an embarrassment’ ■ OOH, how I so agree with Philip Evans regarding the appalling state of our town council’s “flagship” Jubilee Pavilion (LymeOnline, September 3 2021).

Their total lack of interest and commitment to it is an embarrassment and it is truly an eyesore along our wonderful Marine Parade.

Many years ago I wrote and attended a council meeting outlining what it could become after the demise of the Tourist Information Centre. Nothing has happened!

Philip is correct; the old volunteers (I was one) would gladly reappear and help in any way to make the place attractive and informative to our visitors.

Several of our more mature visitors don’t want to be staring at screens or wafting their phones over unintelligible logos. They want a friendly face who can give them up to date in-

How can this be funded? I have and many others suggested the council get a proper commercial/marketing manager who can let out the upstairs rooms on a proper commercial footing, which would more than pay for any costs incurred.

That person could also be responsible for recruiting and organising volunteers who want to help visitors and also the town’s reputation!

Oh, and by the way, they spent enough repairing the roof and putting in a glass screen... but that’s another story!

Time to move forward on seafront roof

■ AS you know over the last 12 months we have been having problems with Marine Parade roof and glazing.

We now have an inspector at next week’s council meeting to read out a report and show his findings. I for one hope this will be read out in the public session and not in exempt business.

This problem of the roof needs to be sorted once and for all. A few councillors I have met in recent days are frightened of meeting the general public.

I think this problem of the shelters roof is an embarrassment to the town; £650,000 is a lot of tax payers money to spend on such a big project that is not yet up to standard.

Let’s see what this meeting brings forward.

Come on councillors and Lyme council officers, let’s get you talking and resolve this problem once and for all.

Construction making ‘life a misery’ in Queen’s Walk ■ I DON’T know where else to turn about this as no one cares of the misery the residents of Queen’s Walk have had to suffer with for the past year.

Since construction has began on new housing in Colway Lane and Queen’s Walk, it has been hell pure hell with construction and contractors parking, the noise, the shouting, the mess.

This morning was the last straw as shown in the picture; this is the standard every day, no one can move and if we do manage to get out, we are unable to park when we get home due to the contractors.

I’m sorry to vent like this but the top of Queen’s Walk has become a festing pool of just mess and misery due to them being here.

THE problem with wedding attire is that you wear it once and the chances are you won’t wear it again for some time.

So do you spend a fortune and get a really fabulous dress and hope there will be some other splendid shin-dig you’re invited to, giving you the chance to glam up again, or do you go for that good old faithful Sunday best hanging at the back of your wardrobe in the hope it still fits given it has been at least 18 months since you last wore it?

I went for the first option, in the main because my Sunday best consists of a clean pair of jeans and a T-shirt without grass stains and, as it was my niece who was tying the knot, after several COVID enforced delays, I figured I’d push the boat out. And with so many weddings happening at the Alexandra Hotel, I had plenty of ideas to take with me on my shopping foray.

After several hours trawling through the rows of posh frocks, I realised why my Sunday best is somewhat lacking. I hate clothes shopping.

Anyway, the wedding went off without a hitch and the happy couple have set off on their new life together.

Which is quite appropriate because I too am setting off anew.

Since I was made redundant from the Marine Theatre last September, I’ve had a few fresh starts. There was my job in that literary oasis, the Lyme Regis Bookshop, and then there was the wonderful Coombe Street Gallery, and of course, the Alexandra Hotel.

From the last day of term for the Boat Building Academy when they made their regular pilgrimage to the Royal Standard to the

couple celebrating their ruby wedding with their annual trip to the gallery, my working life has been a variety of experiences and I have met people I would never have otherwise met.

You’re wondering where I’m heading off to now aren’t you? Oh, alright, well I’m going to tell you anyway.

I’m returning to the arts.

Starting on Monday I am the theatre manager at the Gateway Seaton and I can’t wait.

I’m jumping in at the deep end this Saturday when they have their first live gig with Riviera Dogs performing and the first thing that sprung to mind was what they put on their rider, it probably included beer and crisps.

I’m looking forward to the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd and whilst my ‘Lyme to Five’ column is retiring into the wings, I’m planning to relaunch a monthly theatre column for LymeOnline’s sister website, Seaton Nub News. I just need to think of a catchy title.

Sadly, it will mean another trip to the shops, I seem to be down to my last clean T-shirt and I’ve tried everything to remove the grass stains from my trainers.

I could of course get my money’s worth out of my posh frock, unless there’s some glamourous soirée you’d like to invite me to first…

I scrub up pretty well.

Community leaders speak of their pride in Axminster at launch of business awards

MEMBERS of the Axminster business community at the launch of the awards

■ POLICE investigating a road traffic collision involving three vehicles at Wilmington, near Honiton, on the A35 on Monday, September 13 are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a Honda motorbike, a silver Nissan car and a DAF articulated lorry, at about 1.15pm.

Emergency services attended the scene and the motorbike rider, a man in his 50s from Hampshire, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by Devon Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

A man in his 70s from the Wilmington area and a man in his 30s from the Exeter area were uninjured.

Local officers, as well as officers from the Roads Policing Team, attended and completed an examination of the scene.

Once completed, the road was reopened.

■ TRINITY Hill Road was blocked on the morning of Monday, September 13 after a car reportedly collided with a horse.

The collision took place between the A35 and the junction with Woodhouse Lane.

Devon & Cornwall Police said only minor injuries were sustained and have given no further details on the incident.

THE first Axminster Business Awards were officially launched on Tuesday morning at a breakfast event at the Community Waffle House.

Nigel Reeve from organisers Marketing West hosted the event and welcomed guests from the local business community, as well as councillors and the Mayor of Axminster, Cllr Jill Farrow.

After breakfast was served by the Community Waffle House, Mr Reeve spoke about the concept of the awards scheme, saying its main aim was to promote the wide variety of businesses in the town.

He said that he had already received 50 entries to the awards and he hoped this figure would double by the time entries close on October 15.

Winners would then be announced at a lunchtime awards ceremony, also to be held at the Community Waffle House, on November 23.

Speeches were also made by Cllr Farrow, Barrie Hedges of Axminster Totally Locally, which is backing the awards, and Stuart Carrington from sponsors Thomas Westcott Chartered Accountants.

Axminster launches secondhand toy initiative to cut down on landfill waste

A CROWDFUNDING campaign has been launched for a new initiative to cut down waste by upcycling and reusing children’s toys in Axminster.

The No Toy Left Behind scheme will see preloved toys repaired and refurbished to a high standard to help cut down on landfill waste.

It is hoped the project will encourage residents to give more thought to their buying habits and challenge the cultural norms of consumerism by offering clean, good quality, secondhand toys that will be giftable quality.

Organiser Beth Steele said: “Toys often contain mixed materials and types of plastic that at end of life cannot be recycled by our roadside collections or recycling centres. And, of course, new toys often arrive in layers of single use packaging.

“Even when we are trying to live more sustainably new toys can still pile up at birthdays and Christmas.

“This is where No Toy Left Behind comes in!

We will sell giftable, quality secondhand toys that have been graded, cleaned, pampered and presented so you can give them as a gift.

“We think a more sustainable gift option is really needed. In April this year we surveyed our community and the results showed that although nearly everyone was very happy to buy preloved toys, it was much less likely for preloved toys to be bought as gifts.”

It is hoped the project will eventually be able to open a town centre secondhand toy shop in Axminster, with plans to run upcycling workshops and work in parallel with the newlylaunched Axminster Repair Cafe.

They also hope to offer free toys to families

in financial difficulties through the local food bank.

Support from Devon County Council No Toy Left Behind has been selected to take part in Devon County Council’s #BackTheFuture Climate Challenge Crowdfunder, supporting 10 community ‘Planet Positive’ projects to receive a total of £30,000.

Funding will be distributed depending on the amount of community support shown for each project, so No Toy Left Behind is now trying to raising its initial target of £1,000 through crowdfunding, which once reached will be match-funded by Devon County Council.

The council will then offer further financial support if higher targets can then be met.

School to host open-air cinema MUSBURY Primary School will be hosting an open-air cinema event on Saturday, September 25, with LED screen, hot food and a bar.

■ WITH the sound of chirping birds above me I was delighted to witness a family of swallows waiting for the parent bird to pop a captured fly in their mouths.

All this was so

fast that it was hard to see it with the naked eye.

A very fast snapping camera of 12 frames per second reveals how accurate and skilful the parents are, and shows how much the fledglings rely on their parents after they had fled the nest.

I would have thought that this years visiting swallows would have headed home by now.

There is probably a few stragglers working up enough courage to take the flight back to Africa, but much of the timing depends on the birds food availability and, the cooler it gets, the less flies there are in the atmosphere and that distance could not be done on an empty stomach.

House and sand martins, along with swifts, are also on their way home.

Spectacular bowling at Lyme club finals

LYME Regis Bowling Club finals were played in glorious, warm sunshine. Such a pity that not more of our members could have come down and enjoyed the spectacle.

Firstly, very special thanks must go to our competitions secretary, Rom Hunt, who, in the first full year of office, has done such a superb job of running the finals week-end which went so smoothly.

Saturday morning saw three finals, the first of which was the Men’s 4wood pairs. What a tussle between Barry Rattenbury and Rom Hunt, who were taking on Steve Pomeroy and Alan Nabarro. This game could have gone either way, with Rattenbury and Hunt ahead 15-14 after 15 ends, But the pendulum swung the other way and Barry showed his frustration as the game slipped away from him. Steve and Alan were deserved winners at 26-20.

Next the Ladies 4-wood championship between, arguably, the two strongest bowlers in the club, Ann Allman and Pam Weech. A very strange first half to this game as whoever won an end then contrived to play indifferently during the next end.

After seven ends, Ann opened up a four-shot lead which she managed to maintain and stretch to eight shots before Pam started a mini-recovery.

Ann held her form and ran out the winner at 21-14.

Now, the Ladies’ 4-wood pairs.

Mary Haseman and Alex Darvill were taking on Tricia Boyd and Pauline Knight in a game that was difficult to call as Mary and Tricia are fairly new to the game and in their first finals.

After 12 ends Tricia and Pauline had a comfortable lead of 20-5. They stretched this even further to 23-5 before the Mary and Alex fight-back.

This was always going to be Tricia and Pauline’s match, but Mary and Alex fought back to respectable 24-14 loss. It has to be said that the steadying influence of the very experienced Pauline Knight was a big factor in this game, especially after she sorted out her line and length.

Saturday afternoon, after refreshments, saw the temperature rising both on and off the green. The final of the 5-set singles was a match-up between Barry Rattenbury and Simon Dowling. Simon blitzed the first set 70 and looked in superb form but Barry came back in the next three sets, winning 7-4, 7-3, 7-0, obviating the need to play a fifth set.

Next, the big one for the men, the 4wood championship between Steve Pomeroy and Rom Hunt. Rom won’t mind me saying that he was well beaten by someone who is playing at the very top of his game. Steve had all the answers, whether it was drawing

or playing the weighted shots; this was a master class of bowling. Steve ran out a very comfortable winner 2110.

Of the next three games played, I only have a good recollection of one as it was a game I was marking. This was the Men’s 2-wood singles between Barry Rattenbury and Steve Pomeroy, two names that will crop up regularly in this finals week-end.

This was a joyous game to mark, two players who are both in wonderful form. With neither player ever very far from the jack, this was all about who could remain coolest under pressure.

This proved to be Steve, who picked up a couple of twos at a crucial moment, proving too good for Barry, running out the 16-11 winner. A superb match!

Now it was the Ladies’ final of the 2wood singles. Ladies’ captain Nicky Driscoll was up against a seasoned competitor in Helen Dowling. Nicky had this game under control at 15-9 after 17 ends, bearing in mind this game is decided after 21 ends. Helen fought back to 12-15 at 19 ends. Nicky snuck a single on the 20th to win 1612.

Now for the final between ladies of a certain age, aptly named ‘The Fillies’. Pam Weech was facing Avril Sherring in which, if I’m honest, Pam must have started as favourite. Pam was giving away three shots to Avril on handicap. Well, Avril didn’t need those three shots advantage as she romped home 21-10 winner over Pam who did appear to be struggling with an injury.

That was day one done and dusted and we looked forward to more of the same on Sunday.

Sunday started off rather dull, but the weather quickly improved and we were treated to another glorious sunny warm day.

First up, was ‘The Rocky,’ for gentlemen of a certain age. This pitted Barry Rattenbury against our president, Alan Nabarro. Now Barry was looking for revenge against Alan who had helped in Barry’s downfall on Saturday in the pairs.

Alan played some superb bowls, peppering the jack end after end but, Barry wasn’t going to be denied. He was in tremendous form throughout this game and would have proved difficult to beat. And, so it was as Barry stormed to a 23-8 win over a shell shocked Alan who must have thought “I didn’t do much wrong”.

The Ladies Invitation was set up to be a tasty affair as Pam and husband Alan were pitted against each other.

Pam, partnered with Rom Hunt, was in top notch form and had all the answers against Ann Allman and her partner Alan. It has to be said, I’ve

seen Alan bowl better and Rom was in good form up against singles winner Ann. Pam and Rom were always in control of this game and were very comfortable winners at 25-10.

Up next was the divorce stakes, sorry, I mean ‘The Married Couples’.

This looked a tasty encounter between Steve and Chris Pomeroy and Simon and Helen Dowling. There were some wonderful remarks made during this game, the pick being from Helen who, when asked by Simon what would happen if he played on to Steve’s last wood, replied: “I’ve no idea!” An absolute classic! Chris was in fine form whilst Helen was unusually wayward on several ends. Simon played well but Steve was still in a rich vein of form enabling the Pomeroys to win 20-11.

The Men’s 4-wood handicap saw another match-up between Barry Rattenbury and Steve Pomeroy. Now Barry was looking for revenge but started very shakily. I was marking this game and was thinking “You’ve got your work cut out Barry if your game doesn’t improve’.” This game was very nip’n’tuck, a few wicks, some weighted shots that paid off and some that didn’t, some superb drawing from both bowlers as well as a bit of luck here and there. Barry’s game did improve markedly and he was able to hold off a tiring Steve by 21-17 thus denying Steve a clean sweep in his five finals.

The Ladies’ 4 wood handicap was between the experienced Angela Rattenbury and the fast improving Nicky Driscoll. Nicky proved to be in inspired form as she raced ahead winning comfortably by 21-9.

The last match of the weekend was the 2-wood mixed pairs. Rod Hobbs and Mary Haseman were taking on Rom Hunt and Lorna Young. Well, the experience of Rom up front, supported by some inspired back-end bowling from Lorna, saw the couple easily cross the winning line at 21-8.

Seasiders lose 4-3 with last kick of the game HAVING taken the second placed side to the wire last Saturday, Lyme Regis 1st team have another stiff test tomorrow when Devon and Exeter Premier leaders Lapford visit the Davey Fort.

Away to Thorverton last weekend, the Seasiders got off to a storming start, taking a 2-0 lead early in the game with goals from Callum Garrett and Brad Rowe. Thorverton worked hard to get back in the game and went in at half-time with a 3-2 lead.

Young Josh Daines came on as a sub in the second half and got the equaliser before the Seasiders’ hopes were shattered by Thorverton’s last kick winner.

It was a game Lyme should have won, especially if they harbour hopes of retaining the

In the play-off last season for that honour, Lyme lost 3-1 to Lapford. They went down by a similar margin in their first game of the new campaign, two games in which they dominated for long periods and could have won.

It’s early days yet, but with Lyme having lost two of their first three games they will be anxious to take three points off the Premier leaders.

■ A 2-1 victory over old rivals Seaton Town saw Lyme Regis Reserves move into fourth place in the Devon and Exeter Division Three.

Seaton have been forced to drop from the Premier division to Division Three after losing a number of players but there wasn’t much between the two sides.

The Reserves goals came from a tap-in by new signing Tom Kilcoyne and Jake Bearpark.

■ Lyme Rovers, having opened the scoring, lost 2-1 to Pymore in Perry Street Division One. ■ Rejuvenated Charmouth have made a good start to the season, winning their first game 7-1 away to Netherbury in Division Two of the Perry Street League.

Lyme Ladies win the Culpin trophy ■ HUGE congratulations to the ladies of Lyme Regis Bowling Club who have won the June Culpin trophy against Blandford.

The team were: Ann Allman, Lesley Broom, Nicky Driscoll, Mary Haseman, Chris Pomeroy, Angela Rattenbury, Sue Rowe, Erica Sarson and Pam Weech.

The overall victory was by eight shots.

With all the leagues now finished, it was the friendlies that were to the fore.

Two tour games, against Woolston and City of Birmingham, came back-to-back on Monday and Tuesday with vastly differing results.

The all-male team from Woolston proved too strong for Lyme but saw a reversal of fortunes against the City of Birmingham. In the other two friendlies, it was a win against Severalls but a loss to Seaton.

A major contribution has been made by the arrival of no less than 10 new members, who are now enjoying learning the fascinating game of Association Croquet in the beautiful surroundings of Uplyme's King George V playing field.

The club has also greatly improved the quality of its main lawn by dint of much voluntary work and expert advice, so that they now have a playing surface to rival that of many more famous clubs.

Match results have been mixed this year, but there are some very impressive new players coming rapidly to the forefront for future teams and a bright future beckons.

Con club and Castle take an early lead AFTER two weeks, Axminster Conservative Club and Castle Inn, Axminster, are leading the Lyme Regis Cribbage League with eight points each. Lamb Swans are heading the Beer Leg, one point ahead of Dolphin, Beer.

cricket IN their last friendly game of the season, hosting a Worcestershire touring side, Uplyme were chasing 257, needing 23 off the last two overs with nine wickets down.

At the wicket were veteran Tim Daniels and club secretary Derek Wellman.

It came down to the last ball needing six to tie the game and Tim, receiving a low full-toss, responded and smashed the ball into the river as required.

Earlier, Joe Elsworth had scored 73 and Sam Farrow 71.

Club chairman Steve Batey commented after the game: “It was a fitting end to a great season on the field after securing promotion a few weeks earlier.”
