Three Cups plans on hold after COVID pandemic

The claims against Cllr Bawden have now been dismissed by Dorset Council’s monitoring officer following a formal complaint.

against Cllr Bawden during a public council meeting in April. Her comments were made in response to a report in the agenda, written

by Cllr Bawden, who was the town council’s representative on LymeForward.

Three Cups plans put on hold after coronavirus pandemic THE much-anticipated redevelopment of the former Three Cups Hotel in Lyme Regis has been put on hold due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The former hotel, owned by Bridport-based Palmer’s Brewery, has stood empty in Broad Street since its closure about 30 years ago.

After much campaigning for its redevelopment, things were starting to look up at the beginning of 2020 when managing director John Palmer said the company was “really excited” about new plans for the Three Cups, following its successful refurbishment of The Pilot Boat.

Mr Palmer said the plans would maintain the essential historic elements of the property, with a restaurant and letting rooms of the highest modern standards “to enhance the facilities in the town”.

Speaking in March 2020 – just before the coronavirus pandemic broke out in the UK, he added that the initial plans for the site had been reduced so the project

could be completed much quicker, with considerably less disturbance to others, adding: “We are really keen to get started in earnest.”

The original scheme envisaged the main building fronting Broad Street having a retail unit downstairs and luxury flats above, a signature restaurant at the rear with views over Lyme Bay, a number of beach-style huts as letting rooms, town houses and shops and an underground car park.

When the plans were first revealed in 2019, it was confirmed that the scheme would cost £5million and start within three years.

However, with the Palmer’s portfolio of pubs and restaurants having been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Palmer said plans for the Three Cups had been put on hold.

He said: “The impact of the pandemic on the hospitality business cannot be underestimated forcing in our case the closure of the brewery and our pubs.

“Despite our business having effectively been shut down for nearly a year, we have continued to support our licensees throughout this period with significant rent holidays so as to ensure that now things are opening up that our pubs are best placed to provide what our customers want.

“Quite understandably therefore, significant capital projects such as the Three Cups redevel-

opment have had to be put on hold whilst we concentrate getting our core business re established.

“Rest assured, however, that we are keen to get things moving again as soon as we are able, by pursuing the revised scheme for the site that we tabled last year with the town council and neighbours.”

Park and ride given go ahead Police release image of man as A discussion on the Charmouth Road park and ride was expected to be held in public at Wednesday night’s full council meeting, but after receiving additional information from bus operate First, the council agreed to make the decision behind closed doors, excluding the press and public from the meeting.

Before doing so, town clerk John Wright did reveal some figures. He said that passenger capacity on buses had now been increased and was expected to be further increased by summer, but First advised running three double deckers rather than the usual two to accommodate visitor numbers. This could be done at a cost of £1,000 a day, an increase from £895.

At this point it was agreed that the press and public should be excluded from the meeting.

The council later confirmed that it had been agreed that two buses would run during weekdays and three buses at weekends and on Bank Holidays to cope with the anticipated numbers.

When asked how much this would cost the council, town clerk John Wright said: “The council underwrites the service to support the local economy and reduce congestion in the town. In the last few years it has not cost the council or the taxpayer anything.”

Get your tickets for the community lunch MANY Lyme Regis residents will remember the community lunch that was held as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, organised by the Woodmead Halls as part of the celebration to mark this great occasion.

It was considered to be one of the most enjoyable events in the town’s celebrations, attended by the Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset, Minnie Churchill, who lived in Lyme at the time.

It was a real local celebration with many of those who attended wearing red, white and blue.

The Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK is hoping to recapture that atmosphere by celebrating the return to normality after COVID restrictions have hopefully been lifted by staging a ‘Welcome Back’ community lunch.

The event will be held at the halls on Sunday, July 18

from 12noon to 3pm.

Tickets for the two-course traditional Sunday roast with a sweet and vegetarian option will cost £8.50 for adults and £6 for children (under 16).

It is intended to make it a real fun occasion with lots of spot prizes and competitions.

The community lunch will be the first event to be organised by the Cancer Research UK committee since going into lockdown in March 2020.

The lunch will be limited to 80 people and tickets are likely to be in great demand.

POLICE officers continuing to investigate an alleged distraction burglary in Lyme Regis have released an image of a man they would like to speak to (pictured right).

It was reported that at about 3pm on Saturday, March 20 a man knocked on the front door of a property in Pound Street and told the occupant, a woman aged in her 70s, that his Jack Russell dog had squeezed into the victim’s garden.

The victim went to check her garden and when she returned and said she could not find the dog, the man left in a black Audi car.

It was reported that she subsequently discovered that a vanity mirror and jewellery box had been stolen from her bedroom.

Some items of jewellery were later found on the ground near a gate on her property.

Following enquiries, a 38-year-old local man was arrested in Woodmead Road on suspicion of burglary. He was released under investigation as detectives continued to carry out enquiries.

Detective Constable Jacqui Gravenor, of Weymouth CID, said: “Our investigation into this incident is still ongoing and we have now obtained an image of a man we would like to speak to as part of our enquiries.

“I would urge anyone with information as to his identity to please contact us.”

AFTER months of deliberations, Lyme Regis Town Council has agreed it will operate a park and ride service this summer.

The council delayed making a decision on the park and ride facility in Charmouth Road for as long as possible, in the hope it would have a better idea on how coronavirus restrictions would affect the service.

Deputy town clerk Mark Green previously warned that running the service could result in a loss of tens of thousands of pounds for the council, if visitors were not willing to travel on packed double decker buses in light of the pandemic.

However, with restrictions expected to ease further on June 21, councillors decided this week to operate the service during the school summer holidays, from July 24 to September 5.

The decision will alleviate some concerns that Lyme Regis was set for its most difficult year in terms of parking and traffic issues, with a bumper season expected as visitors make the most of ‘staycations’ rather than international travel.

Lyme Regis Football Club has also decided to open its pitch for one more summer of parking, having previously said it would not do so, which will help to alleviate the issue.

Thieves target car park ticket machines THIEVES broke into and stole money from car parking machines in Lyme Regis in an overnight raid.

Two machines at Monmouth Beach car park were targeted on Thursday, May 20 with about £1,600 stolen.

It is believed the incident happened at about 9.55pm.

The car park is owned by Lyme

Regis Town Council.

The council’s operations manager, Matt Adamson-Drage, said: “Two of our ticket machines were drilled and the cash boxes stolen at Monmouth Beach car park.

“They knew what they were doing – they drilled with accuracy at the right spot to release the vault doors.”

WITH the hospitality and tourism industries having been hit hard by national lockdowns over the past year, Dorset House in Lyme Regis has had plenty to celebrate since reopening its doors.

The boutique bed and breakfast opened in 2014 under the ownership of Jason and Lyn Martin and has since gone on to win a number of awards.

Town Mill welcoming visitors again for tours THE Town Mill in Lyme Regis has opened its doors to visitors for the first time of the year. Millers are welcoming visitors to book on to tours via the website www.townmill.org.uk following the easing of lockdown restrictions. Tours, lasting 45 minutes, are restricted to a maximum of six people and masks must be worn inside. Viewing areas are also open to view the water wheel if passing. The Town Mill has continued to produce flour for the local community throughout the coronavirus pandemic, offering deliveries and using local shops to support the charity.

New commissioner Local MP welcomes outlines priorities railways reform DORSET’S newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick, has outlined his priorities, saying he wants to make the county the safety in the UK. Conservative Mr Sidwick was elected earlier this month and said he was humbled and grateful to the people of Dorset for electing him as their Police and Crime Commissioner.

WEST Dorset MP Chris Loder has welcomed the plan to entirely reform and improve the railways across the country. After a 20 year career on the railways, Mr Loder has enthusiastically welcomed the Williams-Shapps Plan, which will see Great British Railways replace Network Rail, own the infrastructure and set fairs.

AS I write today’s column the sun has finally decided to make an appearance after what felt like an endless deluge of rain, and with the town hosting Jazz Jurassica this weekend, it feels like summer is on the way.

As we gear up for the busy season, LymeOnline is preparing to put a greater focus on multi-media news coverage, especially our video coverage of Lyme’s major events which you’ll be able to view on our website and social media channels.

We’re starting this weekend and will be working alongside the team from Lyme Bay Radio at Jazz Jurassica to bring you video, radio and our traditional photo coverage of the festival – we really have all angles covered and you won’t find such comprehensive coverage of local events anywhere else!

In my last column I wrote about the re-launch of the printed LymeOnline newspaper, which had to be put on hiatus during the three national lockdowns. This week we marked another momentous occasion in our office; this time it was not LymeOnline that we were celebrating, but our two other local websites - Axminster and Seaton Nub News.

The LymeOnline team were invited by Nub News chief executive Karl Hancock to provide editorial content for the Axminster in Seaton sites back in May 2020. The additional work has helped to keep us afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, and this week we celebrated our first anniversary (any excuse for cake!).

Nub News is a national network of hyperlocal websites which is now covering more than 60 towns across the country. The company shares many of LymeOnline’s values – foremost, putting the community at the heart of everything it does – so it was a natural fit for us to expand our cover-

age across the East Devon border.

For me, this has meant increasing the number of town and parish councils I cover from two to five, which can be tricky to keep up with at times.

During lockdown I was helped by meetings being held virtually so I could cover them from the comfort of my own home.

But over the past two weeks local councils have returned to face-to-face meetings – so I have had to ditch the pyjama bottoms for now!

This week I attended an in-person meeting of Axminster Town Council for the first time in years and I have to comment on what a pleasant experience it was. The councillors even thanked me for attending when I left and, trust me, that does not happen everywhere!

Axminster council is a varied bunch of experienced and newer members; two women at the helm as mayor and deputy, and their youngest member just 18 years old. I’m sure they have many differing opinions but they always speak politely and with courtesy for one another.

Sadly, the same cannot always be said in Lyme Regis and it was another meeting of awkward and uncomfortable moments on Wednesday night, leaving one councillor saying she feels “unsafe” at meetings (see front page).

If the pandemic has taught us anything, I’d hope it’s that now is a time to pull together and put personal differences and pointscoring aside.

BRACE YOURSELVES: THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY! LYME GETS READY FOR BUMPER BANK HOLIDAY WITH the weather forecasters saying it will be a sunny weekend, Lyme Regis traders are expecting a bumper Bank Holiday weekend.

It’s been a long time coming.

Actually, I’ve been told that since the relaxation of the COVID restrictions, allowing outdoor hospitality, trade has been was much better than many expected.

And since May 17 when pubs, cafes and restaurants have been allowed to welcome customers inside their premises, the response has been very positive.

In fact, one trader told me that last Saturday had been busier than a usual Saturday in August and that forward bookings had been very encouraging.

Most places serving food and drink, however, are all looking for staff. It seems that many of those working in hospitality who were furloughed don’t want to return to their former jobs. The lack of staff has been a serious issue, especially as this coming weekend is likely to be manic.

Parking is also going to be a major issue, not just the loss of a few spaces in Broad Street, which affects locals more than visitors, but the hike in fees to park in the Dorset Council run car parks, now £8 per day. There were also fears that the park and ride scheme, operated by Lyme Regis Town Council, might be under threat.

The news here is that the town council has decided top operate the Charmouth Road

park and ride from July 24 to September 5.

So why did they leave that decision for so long? The answer is simple and sensible. They wanted to leave it as long as possible to see how the COVID restrictions would pan out before committing the council to a considerable outlay.

There was also some concern about whether people visiting the town would want to travel on packed double-decker buses in the light of the pandemic.

The council is talking of laying on two to three double-deckers, on a daily basis, but it’s a costly operation and I understand they have to underwrite any loss the bus company incurs.

The town council has recovered well from the losses incurred through the pandemic and they are well placed to rebuild their reserves. especially with a bumper summer ahead.

This weekend sees the first of Lyme’s summer festivals - Jazz Jurassica - which this year will be based in and around the Marine Theatre and not along the seafront due to COVID restrictions.

The Lifeboat Guild and the Regatta & Carnival Committee are already at work planning their annual fun weeks and providing there are no further setbacks caused by COVID, there is every reason for us to believe that Lyme will be very much back to normal this summer.

Give thanks that we live in an area where COVID has not wreaked such despair as in many parts of this country. And let’s all vow to enjoy our summer.

A FEW words to say thank you to those of you who contacted us to say how pleased you were to see LymeOnline back in print.

One reader even wrote to us saying they thought it was our best issue to date.

We had to up the number of pages from 24 to 32 to accommodate all the news, features, photographs and advertisements and we were very excited to be back on the streets.

I would also like to thank our team of volunteers who deliver the newspaper to many of the streets in Lyme.

We had to abandon our door-to-door service before lockdown due to rising costs and appealed for volunteers to deliver to the areas in which they live.

LymeOnline is a unique concept, it being a 24/7 website and a free community newspaper. Coupled with our digital edition, which allows ex-pats to keep in touch with their home town, and our Friday video news bulletin, I think it’s very doubtful whether any other town with such a small population has a better or more comprehensive news service.

Stan’s service record will never be beaten I WAS pleased that Lyme Regis Town Council (see page 15) has decided to make their longest serving member, Cllr Stan Williams, an Honourary Freeman of the Town.

This is a rare and much deserved honour for someone who has served this town for no less than 52 years. It is a record unlikely ever to be beaten.

Only one other person holds such an honour - former town crier Phil Street.

Stan, 86, born and bred in the town, first joined the old Borough Council in May 1969 in one of the most hotly contested local elections when more than half of the electorate in Lyme turned out to vote.

Today, that figure is rarely about 40 per cent.

Stan came second to former Broad Street businessman Alec Richards, who topped the poll with 893 votes compared to Stan’s 637.

Elected alongside him were Margaret Sykes, Henry Chessell and Squadron Leader L.A. Childs, who owned the Mariners Hotel.

Henry Chessell, who wrote a history book on Lyme, went on to become mayor on four occasions.

One unsuccessful candidate in that election was no other than Lyme’s most popular publican, Joe O’Donnell, who polled 339 votes.

Among Stan’s most treasured personal effects is a letter from the then town clerk, Harry Williams, offering him his “most sincere” congratulations on his election and

expressing the hope that he would “enjoy the work”.

I think it’s fare to say that Stan has certainly enjoyed his 52 years as a councillor, and especially the two years he was mayor (1997 and 1998).

During all those years Stan has never courted popularity, either inside the Guildhall or in the community.

He has always been a combative debater in the council chamber, but few can deny his passion for his hometown.

I understand that the decision to confer the Freedom of the Town on him was unanimously backed by all councillors. I am pleased to hear that because Stan will readily admit he has few friends among his fellow councillors.

When I was mayor in 1984 the town council had very little money. We could not even afford to pay for staff over a Bank Holiday. I remember going down to Monmouth Beach early on a Good Friday Morning and Stan was on his hands and knees painting the white lines in the car park.

His greatest contribution will be his focus on building revenues from Lyme’s seafront undertakings as chairman of the old Recreations Committee for many years.

When Stan heard this week he was receiving the honour, he said it was the best thing that had happened to him in his life. When the mayor turned up to tell him, he automatically thought he was “in trouble”.

Trouble? Stanley? Never!

COVID-19: The latest on local coronavirus figures

Coronavirus cases remain very low across Dorset CORONAVIRUS case numbers remain very low across Dorset with no COVID-19 patients in hospital across the county.

As of May 21 there were 20 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Dorset Council area, compared to 30 on May 14, and 35 in the Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (BCP) Council area, compared to 47.

This means the case rate per 100,000 people is 5.3 in the Dorset Council area, compared to 7.9 last week, and 8.9 in the BCP area, compared to 11.9.

There are currently no COVID-19 patients in hospitals across Dorset, compared to two patients listed in the last update on May 14.

Up to 16 May, 772,958 doses of the COVID vaccinations had been administered to people in Dorset.

A spokesperson for Public Health Dorset said: “Local case rates remain at low levels, with a further small decrease in both Dorset Council and BCP Council areas again this week. Across Dorset, we now have zero COVID-19 patients in hospital.

“We encourage all adults to take part in

twice-weekly rapid testing. This will help us keep cases low in Dorset by identifying and isolating people who have COVID-19 but aren’t showing any symptoms.

“As life opens back up, this will prevent people from unknowingly spreading the virus to those they come into contact with.

“You can get assisted tests or collect kits at one of our community sites, pick kits up from a participating pharmacy, or order them online.

“Rapid testing is for anyone without COVID19 symptoms. If you have a new, continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss or change in your sense of taste or smell, you must selfisolate with your household and book a PCR test.

“We also encourage everyone to take up the offer of a vaccine when it’s your turn.

We are seeing increasing evidence on the effectiveness of the vaccine, and it is

one of the best ways you can protect yourself and others.

“Over three quarters of a million doses have been given in Dorset already, so make sure you book yours when it’s your turn and don’t forget to attend your second appointment for maximum protection.”

COVID case numbers in the local area continue to remain very low, with fewer than three cases recorded across Lyme Regis, Charmouth and the Marshwood Vale in the seven-day period up until May 21.

In small areas where there are fewer three cases, full data is not given as to protect the identity of individuals.

Case numbers have remained ‘fewer than

three’ since early March.

There were also fewer than three cases in every surrounding area as of May 21, including Uplyme, Kilmington & Colyton; Axminster; Seaton; Burton Bradstock & Chideock; Bridport North; and Bridport South & West Bay. In fact, the closest areas where three or more cases were recorded were Ogwell, Mile End & Teigngrace, near Newton Abbot, to the west (3 cases); Taunton Rowbarton & Kingston to the north (4); and Hamworthy West, near Poole, to the east (4).

Rapid coronavirus testing now available at mobile unit in Lyme

RAPID coronavirus testing is now available in Lyme Regis for those showing no symptoms.

Since April, all adults who show no symptoms of COVID-19 have been able to access free lateral flow device (LFD) tests, which give a result in 30 minutes.

These have been available at community testing sites across Dorset, or you can order tests online and do them yourself at home.

Now a new testing unit has been set up in Lyme Regis, and will be open in Charmouth Road car park in Lyme Regis, on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

Free, twice-weekly testing is available to Dorset Council area residents over the age of 16 who show no symptoms of COVID19. Children aged 12-15 can access assisted testing if supervised by a parent or guardian.

LFD testing was first introduced for local authority staff and those in the community who couldn’t work from home. The government announced free asymptomatic testing was available to everyone from April 9 so Dorset’s LFD test sites are now open access.

Cllr Laura Miller, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “It’s great to see more coverage of asymptomatic testing in the county for those residents who show no symptoms of COVID19. I would really urge people to keep testing regularly.

“It’s great so many people are being vaccinated but the vaccine alone will not stop the spread of COVID-19. We need to keep following all government measures.

“We will continue to work closely with our local and national partners to provide community testing where needed.”

Helicopter rescues couple cut off by tide at Black Ven THE emergency services were scrambled following reports of people cut off by the tide at the notorious Black Ven landslip, east of Lyme Regis, on Monday afternoon.

Lyme Regis and West Bay coastguards were called at 4.40pm to reports of two people cut off by the tide between Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

The lifeboat crew was then called to assist at 5pm.

On arrival at scene, the two casualties were quickly identified and located. One member of the lifeboat crew swam ashore to check on the couple’s welfare, but as the lifeboat could not get close inshore to rescue them due to the sea conditions.

With at least two hours until the tide would have fallen sufficiently to allow access on foot, the coastguard helicopter from St Athan in south Wales was requested.

The two casualties and the lifeboat crewman were winched off the landslip and landed at Lyme Regis Football Club in Charmouth Road.

The casualties were cold but safe and well.

Biography of Sea Venture passenger published after years of family history FAMILY research has led to a biography being published on a figure previously lost to history, who was among the first settlers of Bermuda with former Mayor of Lyme Regis, Admiral Sir George Somers.

Ten years ago, Margaret Rice set out to research the history into the Chappell family, who were merchants and mayors of Exeter, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Thomas Chappell was mayor of Exeter in 1588, and is Margaret’s direct ancestor. One of Thomas’s grandsons, Henry Bagwell, born in 1589, was a passenger in 1609 on a ship called the Sea Venture, part of a fleet of ships led by Admiral Sir George Somers, a former Mayor of Lyme Regis.

The fleet were bringing supplies and colonists to the struggling settlement, known as James Fort, later Jamestown – England’s first permanent colony in the New World.

The Sea Venture was wrecked in a storm on the reefs of Bermuda but all 250 crew and passengers survived and were marooned for nine months on the islands, eventually reaching Jamestown on May 21 1610.

The shipwreck was supposedly the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play ‘The Tempest’ and has led to ongoing links between Lyme Regis and Bermuda, with the town now formally twinned with St George’s in Bermuda and ‘tripled’ with Jamestown, Virginia.

Along with Admiral Sir George Somers, other officials on board the Sea Venture included Sir Thomas Gates, from Colyford, the appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Jamestown Colony, and a young man from Lyme Regis called Silvester Jourdaine, who along with William Strachey, wrote and published eye-witness accounts of the voyage.

across Chesapeake Bay to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he became a substantial landowner and family man.

In 1629 he was elected as a burgess to represent the Eastern Shore at the General Assembly, held in Jamestown. The General Assembly had been established in July 1619 with a Council of State and two burgesses elected to represent their community.

Henry’s claim to fame was his role in 1632, as the first Clerk of Accomack-Northampton County Court, the first judicial court established in what is now the USA. Henry’s signature is on the very first minutes of the court meetings, and they still exist today.

The result of Margaret’s research into her ancestors is the first biography of Henry – a 220page book that sets out what is known about him, a figure previously lost to history, though important in his time.

Records in Devon and Virginia provided the clues and Margaret has made the most of them,

principally from archives in the Devon Heritage Centre, in Exeter, and other local Heritage Centres in Devon, as well as the Eastern Shore Public Library, the Library of Virginia, among others.

Mike Sampson, honorary editor of ‘Devon Historian’, published by the Devon History Society, said: “This is how history should be written and this volume is a fitting memorial to Henry and the determination which he and others showed in finally establishing permanent settlements in Virginia.”

EXPLORING 100 YEARS AT LYME REGIS MUSEUM

Lyme’s Kindest Citizen WITH the understandable emphasis that Lyme Regis Museum puts on the ground-breaking contribution to science made by Mary Anning, it’s easy to overlook the mark left on the world

by Thomas Coram, the driving force behind England’s first charity, The Foundlings Hospital. As the museum approaches its centenary, it’s worth reminding people of this exceptional Lymer.

Thomas Coram was born somewhere in Coombe Street in 1668. His mother died when he was three years old and at eleven, he went to sea. He spent much of his early life in the American colonies including operating a successful ship-building business in Massachusetts.

In 1720 he returned to England where he was appalled by the many abandoned children living on the streets of London. After a 19-year battle, he was rewarded when in 1739 George II gave Thomas Coram a Royal Charter to create the Foundlings Hospital.

The Charter aimed to establish a “hospital for the maintenance and education of exposed and destitute young children”. Although no longer a wealthy man, Coram managed to persuade many influential and wealthy people to support his cause.

The Foundlings Hospital opened in 1745 and Handel allowed the second concert performance of ‘The Messiah’ to benefit the foundation, raising £7,000. Clearly a very early and successful ‘benefit gig’.

Coram’s Hospital organised for foster families to care for the babies and young children until the age of five, when they were then brought to live and be educated in the Foundling Hospital until the age of 16, many being trained for domestic or military service.

Thomas Coram was not an easy man to work with. He was excluded from the hospital’s committees, but remained a governor. He was allowed to attend Christenings and became godfather to twenty children. In later years he could occasionally be found sitting in the garden, feeding the children raisins.

He died on the 29th March 1751 and was buried in the vaults beneath the hospital chapel.

The organisation Thomas Coram of Lyme Regis created is still active today. Known simply as Coram it offers emotional and practical support to more than a million children and young people a year.

The site of the Foundlings Hospital in Bloomsbury is now a seven-acre playground called Coram Fields. Adults are only permitted if accompanied by a child.

As John Fowles, author and honorary curator of Lyme Regis Museum wrote in his ‘Short History of Lyme Regis’: “Dear old Coram died in 1751, a complete pauper. Every penny of his fortune had been ‘lost’ in the hospital. Lyme has more famous names attached to it, but none of kinder memory.”

Museum presents gifts to St Michael’s pupils as it marks double celebration CHILDREN from St Michael’s Primary School in Lyme Regis received gifts from the town’s museum as it celebrated both its 100th anniversary and the birthday of famous fossil hunter Mary Anning last week.

Lyme Regis Museum is holding special events throughout the year to mark its centenary and combined this with what would have been Mary Anning’s 222nd birthday to present gifts to the children.

Rather than a traditional commemorative mug which may have been presented in years gone by, the children each received a sustainable aluminium water bottle with the museum logo.

They also received free annual passes to the attraction for them, their parents, siblings and guardians.

Museum director David Tucker said: “We’re committed to doing all we can for local people of all ages – and this is a lovely way of marking our 100th birthday.

“We especially like to support St Michael’s, as Lyme’s primary school and our neighbours.”

Mary Anning statue designed is revealed FOSSIL hunting fans were given their first glimpse of what the much-anticipated statue of Mary Anning will look like over the weekend.

A day after what would have been the famous fossil hunter’s 222nd birthday, a maquette of the Mary Anning statue went on display at the Marine Theatre on Saturday.

The statue has been designed by artist Denise Dutton following a successful £100,000 fundraising appeal by the Mary Anning Rocks campaign.

Many Mary fans and residents

admired the model on Saturday, commenting on its fine detail and the movement in the statue.

Among those attending was the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, and mayoress Wendy Larcombe.

Denise will now be working on the full size statue, which is hoped will be erected on the square on Gun Cliff Walk, below the Marine Theatre, although planning permission has not yet been submitted.

Guitars event called off for second year

IN 2014, Guitars On The Beach broke the UK record for the most guitarists playing simultaneously in one place – will we ever see scenes like this again?

GUITARS On The Beach has been called off for the second year running due to the difficulties of staging the event in line with COVID restrictions.

The one-day music festival – which has seen thousands of guitarists gather on Lyme Regis beach to play simultaneously in previous years – was set to take place on Saturday, June 19, just two days before the government’s target date to lift all restrictions on social interaction.

But organisers have now called off the event and said they will instead be putting all their efforts into staging it next year. They had hoped to stage the event on the flat roof area above Marine Parade, instead of on the beach, so those attending could logged via Track and Trace, but the town council did not support this proposal.

Last year’s Guitars On The Beach – initially billed as the “last ever” – was also called off due to the pandemic.

Announcing this year’s cancellation on social media, organisers said: “It is with the deepest regret that we are writing this post to inform you that Guitars on the Beach 2021 will not be taking place.

“We have tried our hardest to accommodate all the extra precautions that COVID has thrown at us but unfortunately Lyme Regis Town Council have made it very difficult for us to proceed with the event.

“With the time left we have been unable to find a different suitable venue, therefore we will be putting our effort and time into next years event, venue and date to be confirmed later in the year.

“Please keep your comments clean and respectful, we are deeply saddened already and don’t require any further upset or anger. We understand many will be disappointed and we are sorry this is not the news you wanted to hear.”

Responding to the statement, Cllr Cheryl Reynolds, vice-chairman of the town council’s Tourism, Community and Publicity Committee, said: “The council has always been involved in the management of events which take place on council-owned land to help ensure they run smoothly and successfully.

“Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and the need to balance the interests of residents, local businesses, visitors and event organisers, the council is applying greater scrutiny to major events this

year. Several other events have already been cancelled this year due to the difficulties in managing large-scale crowds while restrictions remain in place and it is a shame Guitars On The Beach felt they were unable to go ahead.

“The organisers were proposing to hold the event on the flat roof area above the seafront, calling it ‘Guitars on the Roof’, which we expressed some concerns about and felt we couldn’t support.

“We suggested the event could be held a week later, when it was anticipated COVID restrictions would be lifted, but the organisers rejected this.

“We acknowledge the effort the organisers have put in to make the event happen and hope they will be able to return in 2022.”

Royal British Legion marks 100th anniversary LYME Regis commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion with a wreath laying service on Saturday, May 15.

Although the Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion was not formed until 10 years later, members marked the 100 years since formation of the national organisation in 1921.

Branch president Philip Evans MBE welcomed a small gathering at the war memorial in George’s Square, including the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian

Larcombe MBE, and mayoress Wendy Larcombe.

Mr Evans then laid a wreath and delivered the Exhortation.

There was then a two-minute’s silence during which standard bearer Jon Hunt lowered the branch standard, followed by the Kohima Epitaph delivered by vice-chairman Daniel Buckley.

Branch chairman Ian Marshal was unable to attend as he was taking part in a virtual version of the Royal British Legion national conference.

AS the warmth of summer grows closer, the coast seems to be coming back to life more and more with each passing day.

Bridport, for example, where I visited last Saturday, put on the first live music performance at Buckydoo Square for months and proved well and truly that West Dorset is back open for business.

I visited the Loders and Uploders scarecrow festival on Saturday afternoon and stopped off at the Spyway Inn, Askerswell for lunch.

It was great to see hospitality businesses in West Dorset such as the Spyway rise to the challenge of COVID with innovations such as their ‘Spypods’. Kudos to landlords Mark and Laura for their hard work. The food was great so do go and visit.

I was pleased to have been invited onto Lyme Bay Radio earlier this month as part of their ‘Bay Lives’ with Neil Charleton, and was also in Lyme Regis a short while before that, meeting Lyme fishermen again to put forward my commitment to supporting them with the long term.

I will continue to push for a better deal for our fishermen, ensure the government treats our small tidal fleet as fairly as large vessels in other areas, and explore ways of encouraging young people into the industry.

Last week, I heard the church bells of Westminster Abbey ring from my office. As a bellringer myself, I always love the wonderful sound of bells.

The Tower Captain of Sherborne Abbey tells me they’ve started ringing again last Sunday as are many other churches. If you ring too and are ever in need of a bell ringer, I’m always happy to help!

Our parish churches should be reopening now. I know many feel coronavirus has driven a distance between them and church life.

To do my bit to help, on Monday, I was elected churchwarden at Bishops Caundle, the church where I was christened in 1982! I’ll do all that I can to support parish churches in West Dorset fully recover and met with the Heritage Minister yesterday about it.

People could soon see food miles on food labels if my amendment to the Environment Bill is successful. I put forward this amendment last week to allow consumers to make food choices that align with their environmental values.

This would allow us as environmentally conscious consumers to more easily decide between an avocado flown in from thousands of miles away and British meat or veg produced round the corner, literally here in West Dorset.

Something for everyone in Lyme branch of U3A THE Lyme Regis branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) will be taking part in a National U3A Day on June 2.

The U3A is an international movement with the aim of educating and stimulating mainly retired members of the community – those no longer in full-time employment and in the ‘third age' of life.

There are now 1,000 groups around the country with a total of 450,000 members.

The Lyme Regis U3A was established in 2005 and has nearly 600 members from the town and surrounding areas.

Under normal circumstances, monthly meetings are held at the Woodmead Halls with talks on a wide range of topics. However, during lockdown these have been held online.

Recent topics have included the Three Whistlers of Lyme Regis, the life of Admiral Sir George Somers and the Ice Age in West Dorset.

Whether you’re interested in languages, gardening, science and technology, rare books, board games, reading, current affairs, tennis, archaeology, walking or photography – there should be something to interest everyone.

Members can join any of the 40-plus groups on different subjects to meet people with like-minded interests and learn from one another in enjoyable and social settings.

Social events have included Sunday lunches in pubs, breakfasts and informal drop-in sessions at The Pilot Boat, regular tips to concerts, theatre performances and gardens.

More recently, members have held some virtual coffee and chat sessions.

Dorset Coastal Connections launches celebration video A NEW video has been launched to showcase a portfolio of 18 projects across the county, co-ordinated by Dorset Coast Connections.

The projects are aimed at connecting communities with the spectacular Dorset coast, spanning from Lyme Regis to Christchurch, by improving physical, digital and emotional connection.

The projects aimed to improve the public places we use and cherish by making them more attractive, functional and providing a sense of place using artistic interpretation to enhance these special coastal places.

Locally, this included revitalising the River Lim pathway between Lyme Regis and Uplyme and new signposting along the West Dorset coast path, based on the history and landscape of each area.

The portfolio of projects also included an unusual art sculpture erected on Lyme Regis beach in 2019 to encourage visitors to take their litter home.

The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government awarded £5.6million of Coastal Community Funding in May 2017 to the projects, following a successful partnership portfolio bid which was coordinated by Dorset Coast Forum (DCF).

Together, with match funding from many partner organisations, this collaboration of projects has overall invested £18.5million to connect our urban and rural coastal areas and has worked with communities to promote the Dorset coast.

The project was driven by four key themes: ● Sustaining and developing the tourism economy

Youth club sessions return to The Hub LYME Regis Development Trust are pleased to announce that James and Jess are getting ready to welcome back youth club members to The Hub in Church Street from tonight (Friday) onwards, at the usual time of 7pm until 9.30pm.

After being closed for over a year due to the COVID pandemic, the trust is taking a sensible and cautious approach to re-opening the youth club to ensure both the members and the youth leaders are able to do this safely.

They will therefore be starting with the 13plus age group only, but are working on bringing back the Wednesday night session for 8-13 year olds and will be close to opening the doors to them in the next few weeks.

The trust will be introducing new checks, including notification of any positive lateral flow tests, and masks must be worn in some situations.

They will be following the current National Youth Association guidance which may mean having to suspend or curtail some activities, or the club itself, for a temporary period in order to safeguard all those who attend.

The development trust and the youth leaders would like to thank everyone who completed the Youth Services questionnaire.

A spokesperson said: “Although at the time of writing the survey has not completed, the response has already been amazing with some fantastic ideas which we will look to try and implement, and also the high number of parents who are looking to volunteer to help us do this.”

Lym Valley Scout Group welcomes 14 new Beavers

IN the first investiture in over a year, the 1st Lym Valley Scout Group welcomed 14 new Beavers, as it continues to resume face-to-face Scouting.

As a result of not being able to meet face-to-face for a while and with many of the Beavers moving onto Cubs, a large proportion of the current Beaver Colony are new to Scouting.

“Investitures are really important in Scouting,” said Beaver leader Karen Yelland.

“It’s the moment when they become part of the group, and part of the worldwide family of Scouting - it’s also really exciting for them because they get their badges as well!”

As part of the investiture, the new Beavers make their promise, and receive their neckerchief, badges and a certificate.

Fellow Beaver leader Heidi Merrett said: “It was a wonderful evening with the sun shining, after the awful weather we’ve been having recently. It was great to have the investiture outside - all socially distanced and with parents watching.”

It’s proving to be a busy term for the Beavers at 1st Lym Valley, based in Uplyme. Grass sledging, rafting, indoor archery, local knowledge and a campfire just some of the activities the Beavers are up to this term.

The skills for life that the Scout group offer continue to be very popular, with the group reporting “unprecedented” demand for places and as a result the group has a waiting list for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Can you help Charmouth Scouts by taking on the ‘Four Week Challenge’ NO one likes disappointing a young person, but nearly every week, one of the leaders in 1st Charmouth Scout Group has to do just that.

The reason? No, it's nothing to do with a knot that's been tied incorrectly or a lashing that has come loose, but all to do with a lack of scope to take on any new members.

Karen Southcott, joint Group Scout Leader (GSL), said: “It's really gratifying for our section leaders to know that the activities they run are so well received by their members that they cannot stop telling their school friends about them.

“However, it's disappointing when they have to respond to a joining enquiry by telling the parent that unless we can find more adults to support our current leaders, we cannot accept anyone else.

“Across the UK, there are young people who want to join the Scout movement, but cannot because of a shortage of extra adult help. Here in Charmouth, the picture is the same.

“We have a number of six year olds who cannot join our Beaver colony, and eight and nine year olds who have been waiting over six months to join our Cub pack.

“Furthermore, our Scout troop is bursting at the seams and the Charmouth Seagulls Explorer Unit, with which we are linked, will soon top 20 members.

“If we had a bit more help, we could take on a few extra members and offer our current ones a far greater range of activities.”

Melanie Harvey, joint GSL, realises that working with young people can be a bit off-putting for some, but insists it's really great fun and there's scope to 'try before you buy'.

“We invite adults to take the 'Four Week Challenge' - come along for four weeks so you can take part in a variety of different activities and get a feel for how the section works,” she said.

“Then make a decision regarding whether you want to stay or not, with no pressure or obligation. But, so far, everyone has decided to stay!

We just need a few more to take up the challenge.”

The Scout Group recently asked its current helpers why they volunteered and what they got out of it, and here are some of the answers.

Mary Saunders, who is retired and has just started helping with the Cub pack, said: “I missed children, so I tried it and loved it. It's so much fun!”

Harry Pearce, aged 24, said: “Volunteering to

work with the Beaver colony has given me the chance for new experiences, to help out and get involved with the local community, and have fun while I’m at it!”

Karen volunteered because she had seen the opportunities it created for her own daughter.

“When she was an Explorer Scout, she was selected to go to the World Scout Jamboree in the USA,” she said.

“Over three weeks, she was able to meet up with Scouts from over 200 countries around the world creating a lifetime of memories.”

Anyone aged 18 years or older can become an adult helper in the Scout movement; the only criterion is a desire to help young people develop skills for life and reach their full potential.

Volunteers can choose the age range they work with: Beaver aged 6-8; Cubs aged 8 -11 years; Scouts aged 11-14; and Explorers aged 14-18, and they do not have to become uniformed leaders or commit to helping out every week.

Furthermore, with so many badges to work towards, most adults will be able to pass on a skill or kindle an interest.

Melanie added: “And don't be scared about helping at a large group. During weekly meetings, we always split our sections into groups of five or six, and ensure the current rota of adult helpers work alongside an experienced uniformed leader.

“Working with small groups has gone down well with current parents who have volunteered to help, and we send out the programme in advance so they can select an activity that appeals to them.

“If you are recently retired, currently looking for work or found you have more time on your hands and have thought about volunteering as a way to meet other people in your area following lock-down, this is an ideal opportunity.

“It's the chance to make a real difference to our local youth community, so why not come along, try our 'Four Week Challenge' and see if you would like to join our friendly, sociable Scout group.”

LYME REGIS TOWN COUNCIL Stan made Freeman of the Town for ‘exceptional service’

ETERAN councillor and deputy mayor Stan Williams has been honoured for more than half a century of service to the town and the council.

Cllr Williams was this week granted the Honorary Freedom of the Town of Lyme Regis, an honour enshrined in a 19th century Act to recognise persons of distinction and those who have delivered eminent service.

The status may only be awarded by the mayor but must be supported by the council and was officially approved at a meeting this week.

Cllr Williams, 86, said he was “amazed and delighted” to be granted the honour.

He said: “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I can’t believe it, I’m only a local lad.

“When the mayor came to tell me I thought I had done something wrong and he was coming to sort it out! I had no idea, it had never entered my mind that I would get this.”

Cllr Williams was first elected in 1969 and has since served as mayor, deputy mayor and chairman of several committees.

He was instrumental in ensuring valuable assets remained with the town council during local government reorganisation in 1974.

Cllr Williams has also played a significant part in the local community, including the development of the Woodmead Halls, as a player for Lyme Regis Football Club, and a member of Lyme Regis Sailing Club and the Royal British Legion.

The mayor, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, has paid a personal tribute to Cllr Williams.

He said: "Stan's service to Lyme Regis has been truly exceptional and it is a privilege for me as mayor to advocate the Freedom of the Town to a Lyme person; council colleague; former mayor, and someone so deserving of this very special honour.

“Stan has been a councillor since 1969; a remarkable length of service that represents a substantial personal commitment to Lyme.

“But this award is not simply about duration, it's importantly about the personal contribution and influence Stan

■ SECURITY patrols have once again started on the seafront to help prevent anti-social behaviour late at night.

Last year we employed security guards to patrol the seafront, gardens and Monmouth Beach area to help prevent groups of people gathering and causing a nuisance to nearby residents.

The security guards helped reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour when police officers were not available and provided a reassuring presence in the town.

Unfortunately, we have recently seen the return of this disturbing behaviour, particularly at weekends, with large gatherings in the gardens and on Monmouth Beach and some of our plastic barriers and cones being burned on an

open fire.

To tackle this, we have once again employed security guards to patrol trouble areas seven nights a week and they’re already on patrol.

One-off funding from the government, via Dorset Council, has helped pay for the patrols, in a year when we expect Lyme Regis to be busier than ever with many people opting for UK staycations.

With lots of families likely to be staying on the beach later into the evening and the number of complaints from local residents on the rise, we hope this increased security will help people feel safer.

In the meantime, we will continue pressing the Dorset police and crime commissioner for the police resources we believe a busy town like Lyme Regis needs.

■ IN a bid to address loneliness and encourage community interaction, several ‘Happy to Chat’ benches will be introduced on the seafront.

New signs will be placed on three public benches in the gardens and on Marine Parade with the words ‘Please have a seat here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say hello’.

They are designed to help break down the barriers of social isolation and get people talking.

Some people may go days, or even weeks, without human contact and as pandemic restrictions

ease, many people may be leaving their homes for the first time in a while and feeling anxious about mixing with other people.

The Happy to Chat benches provide a safe and friendly space to interact and communicate with others, while spending time outdoors and taking in the view.

If you see one of the benches, take a seat and let others know you’re open to a friendly chat. Or if you see someone sitting on one, consider approaching them and starting a conversation.

Who knows, it could make all the difference to someone.

“The most important thing, however, is the sense and perception he has brought to the council and the town's needs; the 'knowing of the town' and the tireless commitment which has produced significant results and had a real and beneficial impact on Lyme and its residents; it is this that makes this special honour so truly merited.

New councillor hopes to make a difference NEW councillor Tara Webb is hoping change is possible following her recent election.

Cllr Webb was voted onto the council earlier this month, beating the three other candidates to win the seat.

She was officially installed as a councillor at a Full Council meeting this week and already has ambitions in mind.

Cllr Webb said she was ‘stunned and shocked’ when she was elected.

She said: “I was so pleased. I only won by 11 votes but I was so chuffed that 320 people actually voted for me. I thought it was either going to be a landslide or I’d scrape through going by what people were telling me.

“I stood for council because I wanted to set the cat amongst the pigeons, I want to see if change is possible. And I had done so much work for Lyme Garden Growers and Lyme Regis Community Support, which I enjoyed.”

The new councillor is interested

in youth and environmental issues and says she isn’t afraid of hard work.

“It’s as hard as you make the job,” she said. “I have not had many people in the community messaging me or requiring anything so far.

“I’d like to get the youth club set up again to really support the youth and I’m interested in the eco side of things.”

Cllr Webb isn’t looking to take on any chairmanships just yet but hasn’t ruled it out in the future.

She said: “I would rather sit back and watch in my first year, but maybe in future.”

■ THE relaxing of COVID restrictions means the council has now returned to physical meetings after almost a year of virtual gatherings.

Emergency legislation introduced by the government last year made it possible for councils to meet virtually, using video conferencing facilities.

Although sometimes challenging, we got to grips with virtual meetings and it meant we could continue business as usual.

While the restrictions mean only six people or two households can currently meet indoors, the legislation ended on May 6 2021 and virtual meetings are no longer lawful.

This was despite high court battles to extend the legislation.

As such, we’re now holding face-to-face meetings in the Pine Hall at Lyme Regis Baptist Church as the Guildhall isn’t big enough to meet safely. We will continue holding meetings at the Pine Hall until June 21, when it is anticipated all restrictions will be lifted and we can return to our usual venue.

■ AS the summer approaches and the school holidays beckon, we can expect to see families flocking to enjoy our beach, bringing with them plastic buckets and spades.

Many of the beach toys often get discarded or lost at the end of the day and unless picked up, are left to drift into the sea.

To help tackle this problem, we have installed a wooden toy box next to the sandy beach where previously owned beach toys can be left for other families to make use of and return at the end of the day.

Not only will this help clear up our beach, but if a family arrives for a beach day and finds they’ve forgotten their beach toys, they can save their money and borrow something from the box.

And the best part is, it’s free, so you can save your pennies for an ice-cream or bag of chips instead. Following our climate emergency declaration in 2019, this initiative is just one of the ways we’re pursuing our ambition and promoting the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ message.

Local creatives taking part in Dorset Art Weeks THE biennial Dorset Art Weeks has returned, having been postponed last year due to the national lockdowns.

With almost 300 artist studios and venues opening to the public across the county, this is the first time in month many of the participants have been able to show their work.

The event is being held until June 6 and opening days and times for each venue will be advertised digitally on the website at www.dorsetartweeks.co.uk and on the new Dorset Art Weeks app.

Visitors should check in advance whether they need to make a booking, follow all COVID regulations and ensure you take a mask with you.

This year, as well as visits in person, art fans can experience and enjoy virtual events from the comfort of their own home.

Among the local artists taking part this year is Julie Oldfield, who will be displaying her landscape painting using pioneering mixedmedia techniques on copper and brass sheets, inspired by the Jurassic Coast and travels over six continents.

Julie’s garden and her new home is Rousdon is her studio, and her tools include bonfires, various acids and alkalis, grinders, scrapers, brushes, pastels, sprays, nature and natural weathering. You can visit

Pieces are individually handcrafted using a variety of techniques and materials to enhance the wood, including resin and hand forged metalwork.

Alex uses locally and sustainably sourced wind fallen trees, giving provenance to the furniture. As the trees used dictate the character, a limited edition batch can be taken from one tree, all unique but connected through the life story of the tree – the end result being stunning feature pieces of furniture and art for home or commercial space.

Dorset a ‘national leader’ in climate change but public action needed to meet targets DORSET is a national leader in council climate change and ecological policies – according to the senior councillor heading up the response.

“We are market leaders on what we have done and what we plan to do…we are held in very high regard, nationally,” said Cllr Ray Bryan at at Dorset Council Cabinet meeting.

His comments followed a protest in Dorchester during which climate campaigners accused the authority of taking two years to achieve next to nothing.

Although Cllr Bryan admits it will take £130million just to deal with Dorset Council’s carbon by 2040, he says the authority has made a good start.

The amount of carbon generated by council activities equates to just one per cent of the problem in the county.

Councillors were told of how Dorset Council is to spend a £19million government grant to reduce its carbon footprint – initially with 35 projects, which could be expanded to 50, mainly involving council buildings, schools and other assets.

Cllr Bryan said the grant equates to more than £50 per head for Dorset’s population, well ahead of the amounts given to other councils on a per capita basis.

He said in Greater Manchester, where the government grant was highest overall, it worked out at £28 per head, and in Kent £14.

“It’s a fantastic result for Dorset Council who, let me add, is only two years old, and we’ve had a pandemic in the middle,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic success story.”

He again called on Dorset residents to back the policies and do what they can, individually – warning that without the public taking action, climate targets would not be met.

Cabinet members were told that Dorset Council had rejected the route of some other councils, to buy carbon credits, and was working to make real-life reductions with a planned 40 per cent dip in the council’s carbon use by 2025; 71 per cent by 2030, 95 per cent by 2035, and becoming carbon neutral in 2040 – ten years ahead of the government target.

By Local Democracy Reporter Trevor Bevins Cllr Bryan said the climate and ecological plan was “achievable and realistic”, although it was now two months behind schedule because of the pandemic and extending the consultation period on the council’s proposals.

It is expected to be approved at full council by the end of July.

He added: “We said we would place this at the centre of what we do. When it is adopted, it will change a lot of the ways in which we work.”

Weymouth councillor Brian Heatley said, although he welcomed the proposals on fossil fuels, the weakness of the plan was not enough emphasis on other greenhouse gases and ecology.

He said he would like to see faster progress, although conceded most of those consulted were happy with the targets.

Cllr Bryan said that design work was now underway on decarbonisation work for 35 council sites, including County Hall in Dorchester, education, and leisure centres, with another 15 sites likely to be included later.

The work was based mainly around heating systems and would include a move towards ‘greener’ methods including air and ground source systems, improving building efficiency through insulation and generating local energy where that was possible.

He said the council was working hard to spend the record £19million government grant to improve the council’s own buildings, something which had to be achieved by September, or the money would be lost.

All will be evaluated as they progress and the council will have to spend the money by January 2022.

The portfolio holder for climate and ecological change, who also holds the highways brief, said the council had already started to replace tools and other equipment to run off batteries and was working on a replacement programme for some its vehicle fleet, together with installing electric vehicle charge points and working on low carbon road repair methods with partners Hanson.

Despite his positive message about Dorset Council’s ‘green’ plans, Cllr Bryan has warned that the estimated total £130million cost of climate change policies could result in a five per cent increase in council tax, which could force a public referendum.

He said that while the climate consultation was well supported, a general residents’ survey only placed climate change and carbon reduction as the ninth priority for Dorset Council.

There is no money in the current council budget for climate change, other than government grant funding for changes to council buildings.

‘Not somebody’s else’s problem’

Cllr Bryan said that the council now needed to persuade undecided residents that climate change was not somebody else’s problem – but would affect everyone.

“People are not as concerned as they should be going forward,” he said.

“It’s very important to get residents on side with us because there’s a lot they can do.”

He defended criticism that the Dorset carbon neutral target of 2040 was not ambitious enough. Although it is ten years ahead of the government target he said it was “realistic and achievable.”

Weymouth councillor Gill Taylor said she was disappointed by the climate tar-

get, commenting: “It’s a really good piece of work, but it’s ‘realistic’, which I find a sad indictment. I want it to be inspirational, so we are pushing ourselves.”

Cllr Taylor said she also saw the cost and public support as a potential obstacle, adding: “The finance is going to be a real challenge, a lot of the public don’t get what we are trying to do... a lot of people suggest they think it is someone else’s problem and there are people who say it’s important but their actions don’t suggest that.”

She said one issue she would like to see included was hydrogen to heat houses which should be encouraged.

The meeting heard that current government planning policy did not support new houses being fitted with solar panels or heat exchangers – and that retro-fitting existing houses to be greener would be a significant cost to individuals.

Policy and Resources Scrutiny chair Shane Bartlett said lobbying government for policy change and further funding for the county would need the support of Dorset MPs. The committee welcomed the suggestion from Cllr Bryan that, following future full council elections, the new authority should be given the chance to review climate related policies for

achievability and cost.

The surveys on the council’s climate change proposals attracted 3,400 responses – less than one per cent of the population, with most respondents over 65.

The authority has previously said it was disappointed by the low response from younger people and is exploring methods to improve engagement.

Almost 90 per cent who responded to the climate consultation felt that it was vital or important to tackle climate change and welcomed the council’s aim of becoming carbon neutral.

Recurring themes in the responses included meeting targets sooner; the language for change needing to be more positive and the need for clear monitoring and reporting on progress.

There was also support for offshore wind power, tidal and wave power, and the need to encourage zero-carbon homes as well as for the adoption of more sustainable practices for the food and drink industry, including moving away from meat, re-wilding some areas and planting species which were better for the environment. Local producers are also being encouraged to explore ways to reduce ‘food miles’.

The policy document is expected to be decided at the July Cabinet meeting.

Marine Theatre to host talks to shine a light on climate change A NEW West Dorset initiative to encourage residents and communities to reduce their carbon footprint has launched.

‘Help Our Planet’ will include a series of monthly lectures from acknowledged specialists.

The speakers include journalists, marine biologists, ecologists, climatologists, botanists and geologists of international standing.

They will explain all the causes of climate change and the adverse impact it is having on the local environment and on the health of the planet.

They will also highlight some of the many things that as individuals and local communities can do to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

These talks will be held on the first week of every month at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis and will cover topics ranging from the impact of climate change on marine life in the English Channel, marine reserves, butterfly conservation, rewilding, the preservation of tropical

rain forests, saving the coral reefs in the Caribbean, monitoring extinctions, management of protected sites and reserves, citizen science projects and more.

Some of the talks will be live by the speaker and where the chosen expert is living away it will be prerecorded and screened in the theatre.

All events will include a panel discussion with well-known experts and an open discussion. There will be a downloadable free filmed version later.

Over the coming months, those attending will be able to share expertise and their own enthusiasm with others in West Dorset.

All the lecturers in this series have agreed to waive their usual fee and donate the money to a charity of their choosing.

The first lecture will be ‘Tropical rain forest destruction, a major cause of climate change’, by Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS, and will be screened on Tuesday, June 1 at the Marine Theatre at 7pm.

It will be presented by Helen Stiles, the editor of Dorset Magazine, and followed by a panel discussion and audience question and answer session.

‘No evidence’ to back up claims of victimisation, says monitoring officer

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE turnover of volunteers, staff and directors at LymeForward, which manages the foodbank and is involved in many other projects with the aim of improving local services and the wellbeing of the community.

In response, Ms Davies said she had been the subject of an “unremitting campaign of serious victimisation, intimidation and persecution” by Cllr Bawden since taking over as chair in March 2020.

In April she commented: “This has not only affected my reputation but her actions have also had a grave effect on LymeForward CIC and its ability to function as a Local Area Partnership.

“I have evidence that clearly demonstrates that her actions and behaviour fall well below the standards cited in the Lyme Regis Town Council Code of Conduct for members.”

Mrs Davies then submitted a formal complaint against Cllr Bawden to Dorset Council’s monitoring officer, Jonathan Mair.

Mr Mair said that both he and the independent person appointed to look at the case had agreed there was “no evidence” of a campaign of victimisation and he would not be referring the complaint for further investigation.

However, Mr Mair did agree with Ms Davies’ concerns that Cllr Bawden should not be the council’s representatives on both LymeForward and Lyme Regis Development Trust, as the independent person had described the two organisations as “appearing to be in competition with each other”, and this could create a conflict of interests.

Speaking during the public forum of this week’s council meeting, Ms Davies read this second part of Mr Mair’s findings, and called for a new council representative for LymeForward, adding: “We have no confidence whatsoever in our nominated representative.”

Cllr Bawden asked Ms Davies to also read the first part of the monitoring officer’s response, which said there was no evidence of victimisation.

Ms Davies refused, saying she had submitted a further complaint to the monitoring officer with regards to this.

The town clerk John Wright said that the monitoring officer could only make recommendations

to the town council but it was up to members whether to act on these or not.

He added that he did not think there was a conflict of interests in representing both LymeForward and Lyme Regis Development Trust.

Cllr Cheryl Reynolds argued that the monitoring officer was a well-paid senior officer at Dorset Council and “we should listen to exactly what they say”.

She was supported by new councillor Tara Webb, who added: “It should be paid attention to and not just swept under the carpet because it will just get worse and make this council look bad.”

The town clerk said he was not trying to sweep anything under the carpet, but reiterated his view that he did not believe there was a conflict of interest.

Cllr Webb asked: “How can you not when the monitoring officer thinks there is?”

Cllr Bawden said she had no intention of further representing either LymeForward or Lyme Regis Development Trust.

Cllrs Michaela Ellis and Tara Webb were elected to be the council’s representatives for LymeForward, and Cllr Ellis also as the representative of the separate LymeForward Steering Group. Cllrs Cheryl Reynolds and David Sarson were chosen as representatives for Lyme Regis Development Trust.

Speaking after this week’s meeting, Cllr Bawden said she had been made to feel “distressed, embarrassed and unsafe” at meetings and had asked for urgent attention to be paid to members’ behaviour.

She added: “In the meantime, I have told the mayor and town clerk that I will not be attending council meetings until I have assurance that this will be dealt with quickly and I can attend meetings without being insulted and threatened.”

Cllr Bawden added that she had compiled a detailed report about concerns from LymeForward volunteers, former members of staff and directors, as well as from residents in Lyme who had “heard about the difficulties there”.

This information has been sent to the monitoring officer in light of a second complaint being raised against her.

Where should we take lost property?

■ ABOUT a month ago I lost a valuable hearing aid somewhere on a walk along the seafront, up Broad street and down through the gardens.

Obviously I retraced my steps and asked everywhere, but with no luck.

What bothers me is that if I had been a visitor and found it, I wouldn't have known what to do with it.

The obvious place would have been to take it to the tourist office but sadly that has gone.

The Jubilee Pavilion is permanently closed, the police station is very hard to find.

Also, there was no concensus among the

shopkeepers as to what they would do with valuable lost property.

Can I suggest that the Jubilee Pavilion is opened as a tourist hub / information point / lost propery centre? It seems such a waste that this centrally located, visible building should have no role. Why is it shut?

Unwelcome surprise on early morning walk ■ WALKING along sea defence pathway early morning in Lyme Regis on Sunday, May 9 I found fresh dog mess in the middle of the pathway, at approximately 6.45am.

Two separate dogs and owners were observed around that time, one off leash and an unwelcome dog came bounding towards me and I needed to tell the owner to control his dog!

What this observation does is raise awareness that owners and dogs out early in order that they are not seen leaving dog mess in the middle of a pathway.

WERE you the teacher’s pet? I wasn’t, except maybe with the biology teacher when I was an excessively-innocent 15 year old who knew nothing about anything and had to confide in her following an incident.

But I digress, how’s the latest lockdown-lift been for you? Just as well we can now drink a pint indoors given it looks like we are going to skip summer altogether and head straight for winter, as I discovered on Saturday night when I joined my niece at her socially-distanced hen night in Newquay (yes, that is a thing).

We should have heeded the signs when the locals turned up wrapped and ready for the Arctic conditions.

Anyway, there’s one thing about bad weather, it drives everyone into the bookshops in search of a literary gem to while away the time, so Lyme Regis Bookshop has been very busy.

In fact, there was one customer order that arrived that was so heavy, it took all my strength to lift it out of the box. Well alright, that’s a slight exaggeration but it’s definitely not a coffee table book, unless you have an exceptionally large coffee table.

Apparently, it was very difficult to get a hold of and Angela tells me she has an original version that is now worth thousands.

It was great to catch up with Paddy Magrane, he of Lyme Crime Fest, and having originally talked about his festival back in the day, I’m very pleased he is going to hold his June 26 author soirée in the bookshop garden and, yes, there is a garden – it makes the perfect venue for all kinds of literary fests.

Let’s just hope the weather improves so the only thing being chilled is a glass of fizz.

Anyway, I rather like solving mysteries, I have quite an inquisitive nature so there is nothing I like more than having a friendly chat with the lovely people who come into the Combe Street Gallery, or to those in the know, the ‘CSG’.

There was the bride-to-be who found the exact earrings she needed to complement her dress, then there was the lady who lost the top of her finger in an accident when she was at school but now wants to start wearing rings and our green fish light pull is just perfect to go with the colour scheme in a new bathroom; we are all keeping our fingers crossed the loo has been installed by the time they go home.

They might need to cross more than their fingers if it isn’t.

What I really need to work on is remembering names so when they return to the shop, I can ask them how the wedding went, if the ring was the first of many or if they have a functioning loo.

I’m not very good with names, but it just so happens not only is Sue (owner of the CSG) an ex-teacher but turns out Michelle in the bookshop is as well, so despite me not being a teachers’ pet, maybe they have some top teacher tips to help me remember.

Mind you, Angela tells me she keeps wanting to call me Saskia for some reason. I rather like that and am planning to use it as a nom de plume for my steamy rom coms I have yet to write.

‘Axminster will be a focus for coming year’ says East Devon leader as he is re-elected COUNCILLOR Paul Arnott said Axminster was "so full of potential" and would be a focus for the coming year as he was re-elected East Devon District Council leader last night.

Cllr Paul Arnott, from the Independent East Devon Alliance, first took on the role in May 2020. He was re-elected at the council’s annual meeting last night (Tuesday) by 29 votes to 21 over Conservative candidate, Cllr Colin Brown.

The meeting was held in-person at Westpoint in Exeter due to social distancing guidance, meaning it could not be held at Blackdown House in Honiton, and lasted just 46 minutes as councillors sped through the ceremonial business.

Cllr Arnott will now continue to lead the council, which is run by a coalition of the Independent East Devon Alliance, Liberal Democrats, Greens and some Independents.

Nominating him to continue in the role, Cllr Eileen Wragg said: “It is with pleasure and pride that I nominate Cllr Paul Arnott for the next year.

“The past year has been uniquely challenging to adapt to new systems and ways of working and continue with projects started by previous administrations like Queen’s Drive and Cranbrook.

“Bold decisions have been made like withdrawal from the GESP and granting consent for the Lower Otter Restoration Project.

“Under Cllr Arnott, huge strides forward have been made, with a willingness to listen and engage, and relationships have improved. He has steered the council through choppy waters with his hand at the helm.

“I hope you support the nomination and we will work together for the people of East Devon and our outstanding environment and put it ahead of political differences.

“We are being led by a caring councillor who does that and leads by example.”

Seconding the nomination, Cllr Olly Davey added: “As a Green, I welcome the commitment to climate change and sustainability and make it a guiding principle of the council.

“He has steered us through a difficult year and he has assembled a great team around him and he will take us forward in the way we need to go.”

But putting forward an alternative candidate, Cllr Bruce de Saram proposed on behalf of the Conservative Group that Colin Brown should be the leader.

He said: “He is the chair of the scrutiny so we know he plays a positive and ganging role in the life of the council, and he would make an outstanding leader off the council.”

Seconding the nomination, Cllr Philip Skinner added: “Colin Brown would bring a marked difference to the authority and I would like to think other members would get behind him as well.”

Councillors voted by 29 votes to 21 in favour of Cllr Arnott, with eight members abstaining and not voting for either candidate.

Cllr Arnott reappointed Cllr Paul Hayward as the deputy leader of the council, and named an unchanged Cabinet.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Arnott, who also serves on Colyton Parish Council, said: “I have spent a quarter of a century now living in East Devon and am very fortunate to have been everything from a student in Topsham to the parent of a now grown-up family in Colyton.

“I love this area, and it is a great honour to have been elected by the council to serve for a second term as Leader, not something I will ever take for granted.

“I believe that the majority of people in East Devon, of all ages, are progressive, forward-

“We have put much in place to achieve this and I wish to thank the very many officers at the council who have joined us on this mission. The work goes on.”

Cllr Arnott said his entire first term of office as leader was conducted on Zoom, and the extra burden of the pandemic on councillors and officers alike, was considerable.

He added: “Now, we are hoping for more capacity to make progress with our key aims.

“The town of Cranbrook needs much attention to help it emerge from some tangled knots remaining from its first ten years.

“Axminster, so full of potential, will be another focus of the coming year, as Exmouth has been in the past year, and will continue to be.

“I stand ready to help in whatever way I can for Honiton, where the green shoots of a revitalised town council are now emerging.

“Across the district, from Seaton to Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary to the Blackdown Hills, we want to engage with and help in the culture, leisure, sport and tourism economies.

“East Devon has so much talent and potential in this, and we want to help this sector thrive.

“There will be financial challenges too. The government said it would cover losses from the pandemic, and unfortunately it has not, in particular leaving us with more than a million pounds in losses with LED. “We also have to take on challenges ducked by previous administrations. What to do with our ageing public lavatory provision, or with our car parks?

“In climate change issues, we now have a new dedicated officer to help us guide this process, and all emerging policy will need to pass through this filter.

“We have a new Poverty Action policy, and we will be working with county to help us realise this.

“And finally, as an absolute priority, we need to put into action challenging ideas for more social and attainable homes for local people. I can’t wait to get on with all this over the next year with colleagues of every political colour.”

East Devon elects new chair

The meeting also saw Independent Trinity ward representative and former leader of East Devon, Cllr Ian Thomas, elected as the new council chair, winning the vote 36-20 over Axminster’s Conservative councillor Andrew Moulding.

Proposing him to be the new chairman, Cllr Geoff Pook said that as East Devon is a polarised council of near equal number of opposing views, and the chair had to be independent of party and of political bias, and give every councillor the voice that they represent.

As Cllr Thomas was the leader of the Independents, Cllr Pook said: “He will bring intellect and skill and total independence and integrity and ensure the reputation of the council is both enriched and enhanced.”

Seconding the nomination, Cllr Susie Bond added: “He has a decade long experience and during his leadership gained the trust of all sides, and this offers an ideal opportunity and era of collaborative working.”

On accepting the office of chair of the council, Cllr Thomas said: “I thank you for the endorsement and it is a great honour to serve the council.”

He takes over from Cllr Cathy Gardner who did not seek re-election to the post.

Cllr Val Ranger was re-elected to her role as vice-chair of the council, by 31 votes to 23 over the Conservative Cllr Mike Howe.

Axminster's mayor and deputy to continue in office COUNCILLOR Jill Farrow has been re-elected the Mayor of Axminster.

Cllr Farrow was first elected just four months ago in January, following the sudden death of her predecessor Anni Young in December.

At the annual meeting of Axminster Town Council on Monday night – one of the first meetings to be held face-to-face in the Guildhall for over a year – she was re-elected for the full 2021/22 year.

In nominating Cllr Farrow, former mayor Cllr Jeremy Waldon said: “She has taken over under very difficult circumstances that none of us were expecting and she has done a sterling job so she should be allowed to continue.”

With no other nominations, Cllr Farrow was elected unanimously.

She then nominated her deputy, Cllr Andrea Sedgewick, to continue in the role, commenting: “Without her sterling efforts I would not have been able to achieve anything as mayor.”

With no other nominations, Cllr Sedgewick was re-elected as deputy mayor unanimously.

Cllr Farrow then paid tribute to three former mayors who had been lost over the past year – Anni Young, Barrie Draper and Douglas Hull – the meeting being held a year to the day since Mr Hull’s death.

“They were all magnificent servants to this community,” she said.

Councillors and members of the public attending took part in a minute’s silence in their memory.

Comparing cameras with the Chancellor of the Exchequer HAVING a chat and chuckle with political legend, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Denis Healy, was a privilege and a great opportunity to talk cameras.

I knew Lord Healy was a very keen photographer and we chatted for a while comparing cameras. He asked how much my camera cost and he nearly dropped his when I told him.

This was at a literary festival at Dartington Hall in Dartington near Totnes.

Lord Healy was a former Labour party Chancellor of the Exchequer, his career as a politician is almost second to none.

Lord Healey stood a second time for the leadership of the Labour Party in November 1980 but narrowly lost to Michael Foot.

philip@lyme-online.co.uk taste of football management at grassroots level are Matt Preece and Dec Ellis, who took over running Lyme Regis Reserves during this most difficult of seasons.

Dec was one of Lyme’s most promising front-line scorers until a serious knee injury interrupted his playing days.

And Matt, a hard-working midfielder, has sacrificed his place to see the Ressies through the last few difficult months.

When they took over the reigns, the Reserves were languishing somewhere near the bottom of the Devon and Exeter Division One East which comprised of just eight teams after local teams were given the chance to return to playing when lockdown restrictions were eased.

Managing a reserve side is always challenging because the club’s first X1 comes first in team selection, with tactical plans often having to be abandoned at the last moment.

After a sticky start, they saw their team go on a run of gaining 13 points out of 15 with a string of great results as well as building a great team spirit.

Unfortunately, they finished the season with a couple of defeats but in a much more respectable place than when they started.

Both Matt and Dec are hoping to be part of the Seasiders’ management team next season with a full campaign in the offing.

STRONG winds and heavy showers have made it difficult for Lyme Regis Sailing Club to hold races as programmed, but May 12 and 16 saw keen competitors having a go and Race Officers adjusting courses. Seven sailors set out in torrential rain on Wednesday evening, among them three youth crews, facing rising winds and seas.

Just leave it to the Batey boys UPLYME and Lyme Regis have stormed to the top of the Devon Cricket D Division East with another brilliant performance, beating Barnstaple and Pilton by ten wickets at the King George V playing field on Saturday.

In week four of the new season, Uplyme have opened up a 12-point lead at the top of the table and have established themselves as early favourites for the title.

Uplyme started the season with a 20-point victory against the Sidmouth 3rd X1, followed by two abandoned games due to the rain where they added 12 points.

The home game against the North Devon side saw Uplyme’s total point-tally rise to 52, opening up a comfortable lead over second placed Clyst

Valley 1st X1.

Having lost the toss, Barnstaple and Pilton were put into bat and the visitors struggled against Uplyme’s lively six-man attack.

The bowling honours were shared by Steve Batey with figures of 4 for 20 off nine overs and Andrew Harrison (3 for 6 off three overs) with Barnstaple being dismissed for 120 runs in the allotted 35 overs.

Openers Steve and Mark Batey took just 16 overs to knock off the required runs with Steve hitting 91 not out, including nine fours and six sixes, whilst Mark carried his bat for 23 runs to give the villagers a 20-pointer.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Uplyme are at home to Kentisbeare who are third in the D Division East table with 41 points (1pm

start). On Wednesday, Uplyme switched their tie match with Sidmouth 2nds, to the Fortfield because the wicket at the King George V playing field was too wet to play on.

Sidmouth 2nds play in a higher division that Uplyme and are the current holders the Corinthian Cup, a T-20 format competition run by the Devon League.

But Uplyme fear very few opponents these day and put in a brilliant performance to knock Sidmouth out in the first round (see back page).

The Uplyme supporters are looking forward to the following Wednesday (June 2nd) when they play their first game in the newly-formed East Devon Bash T-20 competition with an away game at Ottery St Mary.

Northerlies were swinging 20 degrees. An early lead by Darrol and Cameron Moss in their new Albacore was soon overhauled by Jerry Rook and Jake Stow. Youth sailors Ed Stubbs and Simon Law in a 420 (pictured left) were doing well until an inverted capsize caused problems needing the attention of the patrol boat. Young Tom Rawlings kept well up with the other dinghies.

Worsening conditions saw all return safely to harbour. The race officer was Dave Stubbs.

Sunday's sailing forecast promised a force 4 gusting up to 25 knots with bands of heavy showers tracking along the coast from the south west. The start of the first race was delayed as 12 sailors and the race team, led by race officer Joss Kent, all sheltered from a torrential shower. A lull saw them all take to the water. A good length course was set not too far off shore.

After the first lap, which saw a gaggle of Albacores and a well sailed Solo crossing the line together, the next heavy rain band could be seen rapidly moving in from Beer Head.

The wind picked up to a good force 5 with a corresponding increase in wave height. Visibility was also reduced, so with the situation deteriorating, the race officer finished the fleet after the second lap.

Ed Stubbs, crewed this time by his father Dave, came first on handicap, while the battle between the Albacores saw Cameron Moss and Jack Young narrowly beat Jerry and Jake by six seconds in the 22 minute race.

Chris Turner in his Solo beat the Albacores and took second place. Using a 4.7 rig, Tom Rawlings again finished the race, though Josh Connelly, with a bigger Radial rig, didn't quite make it.

Full credit to all the youth crews again, coping with the conditions. Race officer Joss Kent said: “Even with the wind nearing normal sailing limits, the sailors enjoyed an exciting race with plenty of opportunity to get up onto the plane and surf down those impressive waves for which Lyme Regis is famous.”

The racing programme continues on Wednesdays and either Saturdays or Sundays. Limited use of the clubhouse is available with pre-booked catering for members.

Youth members who will soon be joining in club racing, train in exacting conditions on Tuesday 18 May, under DI Jack Young and SI Jim Thomas.

SEASIDERS NOW IN PREMIER PLAY-OFF

By PHILIP EVANS THIS is the season we shall never forget - and Lyme Regis 1st team could make it even more unforgettable if they beat Lapford in the play-off between the top two Premier divisions.

As winners of the Devon and Exeter league Premier East division, the Seasiders are now due to meet the winners of the Premier West division for the overall title.

The game will take place at Topsham’s ground on Saturday, June 5 (kick-off 3pm).

Supporters should be aware that limited parking will be available inside Topsham’s ground.

Lyme finally won the right to meet Lapford in the play-off after meeting Chard Town Reserves 3-0 in their last league game of the season.

But it was a nail-biting affair as the referee abandoned the game at halftime after a heavy downplay which left surface water on the Davey Fort pitch, leading the ref to call the game off because he considered the pitch to be dangerous.

It was originally thought that the game would have to be replayed, but the Devon and Exeter league decided in the end that the result would stand.

The Lyme players, of course, urged the referee to continue the game being so close to their biggest prize ever, but the Chard boys were more than willing to escape the rain.

Lyme had already beaten Chard at Zembard Lane 3-0 and it very much looked like they would net a hatful in the return fixture at the Davey Fort, as they were coasting it when the heavens opened up.

Lyme were well in charge throughout the first 45 minutes, playing fast, flowing football, with goals from Rob Fellingham, Brad Rowe and Tom Bastin.

There are those who will argue that winning the Premier East Division in this most extraordinary season has little worth as the division ended up with just five teams.

When recreation football was finally given the green light to continue after the easing of lockdown, the league gave the clubs the opportunity to continue or to pull out because of the backlog of fixtures and the difficulty with adhering to the COVID-19 regulations.

Lyme were one of the five who de-

cided to finish their season.

Feniton were the favourites for the title but Beer Albion and Colyton pulled out and they may well have had some influence on who would finally top the division.

The Lyme players were keen to get out on that pitch again and, under the new management of coach Julien Simier, in the run-in to the end of the season they have played some of their most entertaining football for some time.

They have also signed a few new faces just for the end of this season, but it looks like Lyme will have a strong squad when they will be going all out to prove that they are

worthy winners of the Premier East and they can’t wait for the new campaign to start again.

The play-off at Topsham will be conducted under strict COVID rules but it will be as near as we have got to proper football for some time.

If it is all square after 90 minutes, the game will be decided on penalties.

There will be no medals for the competing teams, but the winning club will receive a new set of kit and the runners-up T-shirts provided by the league sponsors, Joma. There will also be a man-of-the-match award, selected by Joma.

Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club Saturday, May 29 Home to Kentisbeare Start 1pm

cricket Uplyme pull off first shock of the season in T-20 cup competition UPLYME and Lyme Regis demonstrated what a force they will be this season when they knocked out holders Sidmouth 2nds in the Devon League Corinthian Cup on Wednesday evening.

Sidmouth 2nd X1 play in a division higher than Uplyme, but the villagers put in a superb performance at the Fortfield.

Uplyme batted first, hitting 135-9 in the 20-over format with Steve Batey in brilliant form yet again, hitting 52 off 21 balls, and then taking five wickets for the loss of only 19 runs.

New singing Andrew Harrison gave good support, scoring 32 runs, and then returning bowling figures of 323 as Sidmouth were bowled out for 101.

This result augurs well for Uplyme’s forthcoming games in the newlyformed East Devon T-20 Bash which starts next month, sponsored by LymeOnline and the local Nub News websites.

Batey, whose aggressive battingstyle is well suited to the T-20 format, has started the season in impressive form, hitting 91 not out in Uplyme’s ten-wicket victory over Barnstaple and Pilton at the King George V playing field on Saturday.

Uplyme kick-off their East Devon Bash fixtures next Wednesday (June 2) with an away game at Ottery St Mary (6.15pm start).

Tomorrow (Saturday) Uplyme are at home to Kentisbeare in D Division East, which they currently lead with a 12-point lead over their nearest rivals (1pm start).

With sunny weather forecasted and no football, a large crowd is expected at the King George V playing field.

Uplyme have built a loyal following after their success last season with more than 200 turning up to watch their tier 5 play-off, which is unheard of in local cricketing circles.
