Call for Lyme to declare climate emergency BROAD Street resident Simon West has called for Lyme Regis Town Council to declare a climate emergency.

Speaking at last week’s meeting Mr West, a keen supporter of the Turn Lyme Green organisation, said councillors would already be aware that the world was heating and suggested a number of ways in which the council could reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and be more eco-friendly, including installing solar panels on the flat roof area above SWIM and the Amusement Arcade on the seafront.

Remembering D-Day heroes A WREATH laying service was held at Lyme Regis war memorial on Thursday morning to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Led by the Reverend Rosemary Bragg, the service remembered those from Lyme who fought in the Second World War, as well as the American GIs from the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st US Infantry Division who were stationed in the town in the run up to D-Day. Harbourmaster to leave after 10 years

HARBOURMASTER Grahame Forshaw MBE will leave Lyme Regis next month after 10 years in the post.

He will be taking up a new post as Exeter harbourmaster in July, responsible for the canal and estuary from one mile south of Exmouth right into the city centre.

Eagles won’t be used to scare gulls LYME Regis Town Council will not be employing the service of eagles to frighten away seagulls – but it took the casting vote of new mayor Brian Larcombe to reject the idea.

Councillors were split after a trial using birds of prey to scare off gulls in April caused a media frenzy.

Among those attending were many of Councillor Larcombe’s family, as well as fellow councillors and representatives from local organisations.

Councillor Belinda Bawden - one of six new members of the council - as deputy mayoress.

Councillor Graham Turner proposed a toast to the new mayor, saying he brought a wealth of experience in business and local government to the role.

Guildhall packed for mayor making CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE cent local elections, all councillors must now be given the chance to perform in roles important to the town and to themselves.

He thanked Councillor Ellis and her husband Alan for their two years as mayor and consort, and said he would do his best to do justice to the position.

Local resident Nigel Ball proposed the toast to the town council, thanking members and staff for their hard work and added: “We will all work together to make Lyme a happier and more positive place.”

In his response, Councillor John Broom said it was heartening to hear that the work of the council was appreciated. He recognised that there had been some “colourful episodes” in the Guildhall in recent years, but said this was inevitable when a group of passionate people came together.

Despite these difficulties, Councillor Broom said that the council had achieved a great deal and he hoped business would continue to be carried out with “courtesy and respect” in the future.

Councillor Richard Doney proposed a toast to the council’s officers and staff, asking councillors to help them by being clear, consistent and thinking about the consequences of their decisions.

He added that he hoped for a more cohesive relationship between councillors and staff in the future and they should work as a team.

His comments were reflected in town clerk John Wright’s response, in which he emphasised that the councillors and staff were “one or-

ganisation”.

He added that the council was in a very healthy financial position and it needed to use these recourses to make the best decisions on behalf of the town.

Local journalist Philip Evans MBE then proposed the toast to the town of Lyme Regis. He asked residents to take time to appreciate the beauty of the town and, addressing councillors, added: “You are the guardians of that beauty and we trust you to look after it.”

Mr Evans also praised the passion of volunteers from Lyme’s numerous organisations and called for more young people to step up and support local clubs and associations.

He praised the two new young members of the town council - 19year-old Kelsey Ellis and 20-yearold Leon Howe - describing them as “the beacon of our future”.

On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Mr Evans also asked those attending to remember the men from Lyme who fought in the Second World War, and the American GIs that were stationed in the town in the run up to D-Day. In his response, local resident Ken Gollop said: “We are lucky to live in a place like Lyme but it’s the people who make a town, and we are very lucky to have the people who run all our organisations.”

He added that Lyme did have its problems - including traffic, housing and the pressure the large number of visitors to the town placed on local infrastructure - but he wished the council the best of luck in trying to overcome these.

Closing the ceremony, Councillor Larcombe commented: “Lyme has to respect its past but recognise its future, and we need to hold those two things in balance and under-

stand the consequences of what we do.”

The mayor making ceremony was followed by a reception at Lyme Regis Football Club.

Public recognise spirit of newly-elected council MORE attention will be given to matters raised by the residents of Lyme Regis at the town council’s public forum sessions.

This was a commitment made by newly-elected mayor, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, chairing his first full council meeting.

At the start of the meeting, Councillor Larcombe also announced that all proceedings in the Guildhall would now be audio recorded and kept for one year.

During the public forum Ken Gollop, a former councillor, asked for an update on the traffic survey the council had commissioned and also enquired on the situation concerning disturbance compensation being made to the council by the company which made the Mary Anning film, ‘Ammonite’, staring Kate Winslet.

At a previous meeting Mr Gollop said the money should not go into council funds but should be used to benefit young people and be given to an organisation like the Rotary Club to distribute.

Town clerk John Wright said the council had set a deadline for the traffic report and they were still waiting for it to be completed.

Wright said the council had produced a draft press release which had been sent to the film company to approve but had not had a response yet.

Nigel Ball, a regular attender at council meetings, said how nice it was to see the new council starting on such a positive note.

“This is fantastic and I really look forward to coming to these meetings so we can all work together,” he said.

“I feel that we now we have a council that is starting to understand already how people feel.”

Mr Ball, an experienced horticulturalist, also offered the council free advice and help with regards to planting in the seafront gardens and around the town.

At the end of the public forum, Councillor Larcombe gave an assurance that, in future, any matters raised by the public at council meetings would get a response from staff within ten days.

This follows a number of complaints over the years from members of the public who had raised matters in the public forum but had received no answer to their questions.

Calls for Lyme to declare climate emergency BROAD Street resident Simon West has called for Lyme Regis Town Council to declare a climate emergency.

During the public forum at last week’s full council meeting, Mr West, a keen supporter of the Turn Lyme Green organisation, told councillors that they have all been hearing for years that the world is heating and that if we don’t change our ways, we are “headed for trouble”.

Mr West continued: “More recently, the full extent of this problem has been better understood and we have seen the rise of groups such as Extinction Rebellion and individuals like Greta Thunberg and, of course, David Attenborough, all telling us that we are headed for disaster on an unprecedented scale.

“The United Nations IPCC has told us all, in no uncertain terms, that we have (now less than) 12 years to halt irreversible climate change.

“Organisations across the world, including Dorset, Somerset and Devon councils, and more locally Bridport and Chard councils, and even our UK government, have heeded the call and declared a climate emergency; Lyme Regis needs to do so too.

“It has become very clear that we can only pull back from the brink of climate disaster if every individual, every business and every organisation takes environmental responsibility for everything they do.

“From switching to renewable energy, to reducing the number of flights we take, from drastically curbing rampant consumerism, to reducing the amount of animal agriculture that is decimating trop-

“Here in Lyme Regis, our council needs to declare a climate emergency and make a plan to change.”

Mr West gave examples of how this change could be effected, saying: “First, with an immediate environmental impact audit of all the areas of its work and its influence.

“Second, establish a plan to change its activities to low or zero greenhouse gas emission well before the danger date of 2030. Chard Town Council have set 2028 as their goal; there is no reason why Lyme Regis could not achieve the same or better.

“Third, as soon as practical, Lyme Regis Town Council could easily offset its current level of greenhouse gas emissions. There are many ways to do this and it would be a temporary measure until the actions of the council are all fully environmentally friendly.”

Mr West concluded by offering a couple of ideas, including offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from visitors travelling into town, which he said would cost just 16 pence per 16kg for cardon dioxide; and installing solar panels on the flat roof above SWIM and the Amusement Arcade on Marine Parade.

He added: “I implore our town council to declare a climate emergency with immediate effect, and make a plan to do its part.”

Newly-elected town mayor Brian Larcombe said the council needed to see what it could do, adding: “Yes, I sympathise with the situation and I think there are things that we as a council can do and

these need to be on our short term consideration. I do not think there is a quick solution, but there are things we can look at.”

Town clerk John Wright said the matter could be referred to the next cycle of council meetings to think through ideas of where the council wanted to be in terms of climate change.

After the meeting Mr West said he had been contacted by Mr Wright asking for a meeting to discuss his thoughts.

He added that several councillors had already said they fully supported the proposal, including newly-elected Belinda Bawden who had been “instrumental in bringing this about”.

Harbourmaster leaving Lyme for new challenge in Exeter HARBOURMASTER Grahame Forshaw MBE will leave Lyme Regis next month after 10 years in the post.

Mr Forshaw served with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines for 30 years before taking over as harbourmaster from Mike Poupard in 2009.

He will be taking up a new post as Exeter harbourmaster in July, responsible for the canal and estuary from one mile south of Exmouth right into the city centre.

Mr Forshaw said he had thought “long and hard” about whether to apply for the job, because Lyme Regis was such a nice place to work and everything at the harbour was now in place.

“It will be a bit of a wrench to leave but this opportunity with Exeter City Council came up and I felt it was time for a new challenge,” he said.

During his 10 years in Lyme Regis, Mr Forshaw has overseen the installation of the floating pontoons and increased the number of moorings in the harbour. A new dredging plan is now also in place to increase the depth of the harbour and an enlarged and improved office on the Cobb is about to be opened.

Police appeal for witnesses after ‘indecent act’ on beach

POLICE investigating a suspicious incident on Lyme Regis beach are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

A woman reported that a man had performed an indecent act on the beach, near to the clock tower at Marine Parade, at about 9.40am on Saturday, May 25.

The man is described as aged in his late 40s to early 50s, bald and wearing a dark T-shirt and dark tracksuit bottoms.

Police Constable Neil Gauden of Bridport Police said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and I am appealing for anyone who saw a man matching the description given acting in a suspicious manner on the morning of Saturday, May 25 2019 to contact us.

“I am also keen to hear from anyone with further information that can assist our investigation.”

Rotary golf day raises £4,000 deputy Mike Higgs, a harbour engineer and two seasonal staff added that the harbour is now financially more secure, is receiving more support from the new Dorset Council and is attracting visiting vessels from all over the world.

He commented: “It’s an incredibly busy job; you’re on call all the time, seven days a week, but it’s very varied and you get to meet all kinds of people that come to the harbour.

“It’s been an experience working here; hard work but very enjoyable and now everything is in good shape to hand over to someone new who can take it forward.”

Dorset Council has not yet issued an announcement on Mr Forshaw’s replacement.

A CHARITY golf day organised jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Lyme Regis and Axminster raised £4,000 for Cancer Research UK. The format was a four-ball stableford with 29 teams taking part and the best two scores to count. A great score of 96 was achieved by a men’s four-ball from Lyme Regis.

Both Lyme Regis and Axminster Rotary Clubs would like to thank Lyme Regis Golf Club for their help and co-operation in a successful day.

The proceeds were to be split 50/50 between the two clubs for good causes but it was later decided to donate 100 per cent to the Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK.

Supper event supports domestic abuse victims Recycling tubes to clean up harbour A BRING and share supper was held at The Hub in Lyme Regis last week, primarily raising awareness of the Dorset Women’s Refuge and related services that help those suffering at the hands of domestic abuse perpetrators.

The event included the opportunity to learn more about the refuge, as well as a presentation about the work of charity You First, which supports vulnerable people including those suffering domestic abuse.

NEW recycling tubes has have been installed around the Cobb and North Wall in Lyme Regis to improve the health of our marine environment.

The tubes can be used for discarding fishing lines, which will be collected to be re-used.

The initiative was set up be keen sailor and former Mayor of Lyme Regis, Sally Holman, to show that harbour users and the Cobb community care about plastic pollution.

RNLI launches water safety campaign Attend your cervical screening THE RNLI is launching its national drowning prevention campaign, ‘Respect the Water’, for 2019 and is urging the public to follow its potentially lifesaving advice if they find themselves in trouble in cold water: fight your instinct to swim hard or thrash about and instead relax and float on your back until you have regained control of your breathing.

AS part of this year’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Week from June 10 to 16, Dorset-based charity GO Girls, which supports women with gynaecological cancers, is urging women to attend screening tests, as figures reveal the uptake for smear test appointments is at a 20-year low.

Sally was distressed by the amount of micro-plastic washed up on the beach and slipway following south east gales in the winter and spring, which prompted her to seek sponsorship from local businesses for the recycling tubes.

She also met with and harbourmaster Grahame Forshaw, Dorset councillor Daryl Turner and Dorset Waste Partnership and the project has been met with great enthusiasm from the harbour community.

Tackling crisis in special education LEADER of Dorset Council, Councillor Spencer Flower, has written to the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds MP, asking for the government to take urgent action to address the national crisis around funding for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Showcase for newly-formed Lyme Bay Arts LYME Bay Arts - an independent, members-based, not-for-profit community interest company - has recently been formed with the aim of building sustainable platforms on which artists working in every medium and community arts organisations in the South West can collaborate on exhibitions, workshops and other art, educational and social events. East Devon projects receives £75,000 MORE than £75,000 has been given to a wide variety of East Devon community projects by Devon County Council and East Devon District Council through the Communities Together Fund. This includes £3,000 towards two projects to provide night landing sites for the Devon Air Ambulance, including in Uplyme. However, the fund has now closed and will not be running again.

They will be holding a coffee morning in the Lister Room on Marine Parade on Sunday, June 16 to raise funds.

HAVING spent most Saturdays at Lyme Regis Football Club since I was just eight years old, I always wonder what I’ll do with my weekends when the season finishes.. but then it never really quietens down at the Davey Fort!

Last Friday the club celebrated another successful season at its annual dinner and presentation night and, having proudly taken home the Clubman of the Year trophy last year, I handed it over to my fellow fundraising committee member and club treasurer Nicky Levan - that means the girls have won it three years running!

It was a real family affair with Nicky’s two sons, Ben and Cody, both taking home awards and brothers Toby and Robbie Fowler also winning top prizes (see page 18). Needless to say, celebrations went on late into the night... well, early the next morning actually!

And there’s more to come this weekend as the Seasiders welcome members from their twin club US Creully Commes in Normandy - a friendship that has spanned 39 years - for their annual match on Saturday afternoon.

If you fancy a full sporting weekend, head over to Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club on Sunday for their T20 cricket festival, with a programme of three matches and barbecue all day.

When our French visitors head home on Sunday, attention at the Davey Fort will turn to our annual Sausage & Cider Festival - our biggest fundraiser of the year - which will be held on Saturday, July 6 from 2pm. Preparations are in full swing and we even had a cider tasting this week (someone’s got to do it!) to decide which brands we’ll be serving at the bar.

The free event will also include live music all day, a selection of sizzling sausages on the barbecue and fullystocked indoor and outdoor bars, so don’t be put off if you’re not partial to a pint of scrumpy!

Last week I was given a break from my council reporting duties so I could go to a production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by cycling theatre company The Handlebards at the Marine.

Unfortunately the weather meant the outdoor production had to be moved inside but the show was still absolutely brilliant. Simple, clever and ridiculously silly all at once, it was Shakespeare like I’ve never seen it. If you get the chance to catch the touring theatre company this summer, I’d highly recommend.

Meanwhile, Dad was next door covering the first full council meeting since the election of our new members and mayor. I’m not sure how pleased he was about that, but the next day he reported on high spirits in the Guildhall.

That was definitely the case at this week’s mayor making ceremony, where Councillor Brian Larcombe was officially installed as First Citizen.

The positive speeches focussed on unity, respect and moving forward together.

Then it was time for more celebrations... so it was back to the Davey Fort of course!

M I hearing things? Was that laughter I heard in the Guildhall.

After many years when the atmosphere in the council chamber has been, shall we say, a little sombre, there was an air of excitement, anticipation and, yes, enjoyment, when our new town council met for their first full meeting.

No barbed comments. No disparaging allegations. No histrionics or childish squabbling.

Simply, it was the most enjoyable council meeting I had been to for eight years and I went home feeling that - at last - we now have a happy council.

I hope my euphoria will not be ruined in the coming weeks. For months I’ve been saying that Lyme deserves better - and this was it.

In the recent election Lyme voted for change and it very much looked like change was definitely on its way when it was announced that in future, when residents raise matters in the public forum they will get a response within ten days, in writing I presume.

On many occasions in the past queries from the council taxpayers were aired and noted. And that was the end of it.

It was refreshing at the first meeting to see that all councillors particpated in debate, not just a few whose strong views and aggressive delivery prevented others joining the affray. It was particularly heartening to see that both new young councillors, Kelsey Ellis and Leon Howe, made positive contributions and anyone who thinks that Kelsey, daughter of outgoing mayor Michaela Ellis, will always be on her mother’s side clearly doesn’t know Kelsey.

A similar air of expecatation and joie de vivre prevailed at Wednesday’s mayor-making ceremony when Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE was officially installed as the town’s first citizen.

It was one of the most enjoyable mayor-making ceremonies I can remember and that air of comradeship continued when the mayor invited all those present to join him and his wife for the after-match party at the football club.

Councillor Larcombe seems to be relishing his new role but, as always in local governemnt, the

honeymoon end will come around soon enough and he knows he has some meaty issues to get his teeth into. High on his agenda will be urgent consideration of Lyme’s parking issues with many asking whether the failed attempt to get the park and ride in Sidmouth Road will be reignited and also the traffic issues with the much awaited arrival of the report by a firm of consultants due for publication.

There also seem to be important planning issues to be aired, including the development of the bungalow on the seafront which has caused so much angst, and the development of the Rock Point which, I understand, has caught the eye of the conservation officer with a possible recommendation of refusal because an old fireplace has been discovered in the cellar and needs to be preserved. Why? One issue I know the mayor wants to gets to grips with is the balance of managing Lyme’s visiting population who make it such a popular holiday destination, with that of the needs of those who live and work in the town.There has been increasing concern expressed, especially on social media that the council is only interested in cramming in more visitors and is not interested in doing anything much for the locals.

There is also talk of having a thorough review of the number of meetings the council holds and the reduction of gatherings behind closed doors.

Does Lyme really need 60 or more council meetings a year? Does the committee system need streamlining or abolishing altogether and replaced, perhaps with two full council meetings a month? With all councillors being able to serve on all committees, it means that every matter often gets discussed twice. I have heard councillors say on a number of occasions, if a motion they favour gets rejected at committee, “Don’t worry, we will get that changed at full council.”

These, and many more issues, will no doubt make good copy for this newspaper and we look forward to reporting on them in detail.

There will be differing opinions but it is to be hoped that the friendly spirit that has emerged so early with this new council will continue no matter how strongly the competing views are expressed.

BROAD Street resident Simon West made an impassioned plea at last week’s meeting for the Town Council to follow other councils in Bridport and Chard, and at the new Dorset unitary authority, to declare a climate emergency in Lyme.

Not so long ago such a request, no matter how eloquently presented, would have been given little, if any consideration. “What’s that got to do with us”, might have been the response. But those days are long gone. No local authority can ignore the increasing realisation that unless we take climate change seriously, and act now, our planet is in mortal danger.

Not only did Mr West outline the case with clarity, he also came up with some ideas of what action the council can take.

His plea was well received by our new mayor Brian Larcombe and Mr West has already had a productive meeting with town clerk John Wright.

And I hear that Mr West is hoping he can help the council accelerate a response by becoming a member and is seeking a place on the council in the coming by-election, should there be one.

Spare a thought for those brave young American GIs AS I started to write this column World War Two veterans were gathering at the French resort of Ver-sur-Mer to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and to watch Teresa May and the French President, Emmanuel Macron unveil a bronze statue featuring three Tommies racing up the beaches. It was a highly emotional gathering.

Four hours later, as president of the Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion, I was among a number of people who gathered in George’s Square for Lyme to pay its own tribute to those men who made the supreme sacrifice in liberating Europe.

The mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, laid a wreath on behalf of the town and I did likewise from the Royal British Legion. It was a much more simple ceremony than the one on Gold Beach, but no less significant.

Nine men of Lyme died in the Battle for Normandy with soldiers of the Dorset Regiment being among the first to go ashore on D-Day at Juno Beach. Among them was a young man named Alan Larcombe, the father of our new mayor, who kept a detailed log of his journey across occupied Europe until the ceasefire was announced.

The service was conducted by the Reverend Rosemary Bragg who told the gathering that C Company of the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st US Infantry Division were based in Lyme, with the company headquarters at the top of Woodmead Road under the command of Captain Victor Briggs, prior to the invasion.

These men were transferred to Weymouth from where they sailed on USS Samuel Chase for Normandy. At 7.40 am on June 6th they landed at Omaha Beach at one of the most fiercely defended assault points along the 30 miles of coast. Many of them were slaughtered.

There were many great kindnesses exchanged whilst the GIs were billeted in town, many of whom were housed under canvas in camps across Lyme. The soldiers delighted local children by dispensing candy. Many of them were invited into local homes to share a meal to which they often brought exotic fruits such as pineapples that the people of Lyme had not seen for many years.

It’s a sobering thought that hundreds of those brave young men, thousands of miles from home, never made it back to the USA, but their last experience of kindness between allies was here in Lyme.

Morris dancers take over seafront

UPLYME Morris raised £260 for local charities at their second annual Lyme Regis Day of Morris Dancing. Joining Uplyme Morris were The Belles of London, Sidmouth Steppers and the Pigsty dance group from Bristol, who entertained crowds with performances on Marine Parade all day Saturday, alongside penny farthing riders Alistair and Sebastian Cope from Velo Vintage. The event, sponsored by SWIM and Lyme Regis Brewery, was topped off with songs from the Chantry Buoys shanty singing group in the evening.

In 2007 they bought the Fairwater Head Hotel, having been charmed by the Edwardian house and its stunning countryside location overlooking the Axe Valley.

They have since won AA 1 and 2 rosettes, a Taste of the West Gold award and have been named Devon Food runners up for the Best Restaurant.

Church appeals for help to raise tower repair funds

ST Michael’s Parish Church in Lyme Regis is turning to the local community to help raise more than £121,000 for essential repairs to its bell tower.

The tower is suffering from water ingress and architects have given an estimated cost of £121,400 for the repairs, but this may increase when the render is removed to reveal the full extent of any damage caused.

The tower’s clock is also currently not working and will not be repaired until the tower is refurbished.

The church congregation and Parochial Church Council (PCC) have been holding events to raise funds, including the ‘Tower Trundle’ sponsored walk last year which raised £3,300, and regular coffee mornings and lunches.

The former Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, chose St Michael’s Parish Church as her charity of the year for 2018/19 and raised £4,400 towards the project.

The PCC has also submitted two grant applications but with little success, and has struggled to find the time and manpower needed for fundraising as St Michael’s currently does not have a vicar or churchwarden.

Now the church is appealing for help from the local community to really get its fundraising efforts off the ground Dawn Baker, treasurer of the PCC, said: “It’s a huge task to raise this sort of money. It’s the community’s church so we want them to know what we’re doing and what we need,

and we would be most grateful to anyone who can help with fundraising.”

As well as weekly services on Sundays and Wednesdays, the church is well-used by the local community for weddings, christenings and funerals, and town events such as Remembrance Sunday and the annual Civic Service.

St Michael’s Primary School also regularly uses the church and it often hosts concerts showing off its impressive Skrabl organ, which was installed after a fundraising campaign well-supported by the town raised £375,000.

Heidi Merrett, lay-chairman of the PCC, said: “St Michael’s is very well used by the community and also is also visited by many tourists, especially because of its connections with Mary Anning and Thomas Coram.

“There has been a church on this site for 1,000 years and the tower is the oldest part of the existing church, so it would be sad to think we can’t look after it properly in this day and age.

“The church is there for people to take comfort in and help them through crisis. It’s open everyday but we have to keep it safe, we’d hate to see it closed.”

Carers don’t just care for a week Mill visitors take part in

ID you know that next week (June 10) is National Carers Week? Its purpose is highlighting the work done by the nearly five-and-a-half million unpaid carers in the UK, appreciating what they give to families and communities, and encouraging people who may not think of themselves as carers to recognise their role and to use the support that’s available.

“I care for my mother because she’s family – it’s natural.” “I look after Jim because he’s a neighbour – why wouldn’t I?” Such human compassion sometimes stops people realising that, more than ‘someone who helps’, they’re carers who deserve their own share of assistance. After all, unpaid carers contribute about £60 billion a year of free services, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Every unpaid carer can, and should, make sure their GP practice knows they’re a carer and has officially registered that fact.

With all its staff aware of your caring role, the practice should be as concerned for your own welfare as for that of the person you care for. You should be offered appointments most convenient for you and that person, be involved in their care planning, be notified of useful information and support, and be entitled to a free annual health check.

Most GP practices have a specified member of staff as the key contact with carers, whether paid or unpaid.

Often this person will arrange informal social events for local carers: these get-togethers can offer mutual support when caring may become a bit isolating, as well as sharing practical advice on the range of financial,

emotional and practical demands on carers.

And that’s important. Research for Carers Week, carried out by Carers UK and eight national charities, concludes that 72 per cent of carers in England experience mental ill health, and 61 per cent physical ill health, as a result of caring. It’s worse for young carers.

Recognising how important carers are, NHS England this month starts a ‘Carer-friendly GP practices’ initiative, encouraging GPs to be as effective as possible in supporting carers.

GPs will be able to use evidence of how they do this when inspected by the Care Quality Commission. (It would, of course, be better if NHS England provided GPs with appropriate funding as well as encouragement … and better still if professional caring services weren’t nationally so scandalously under-resourced.)

Many charities support carers. Carers UK (www.carersuk.org) and the Carers Trust (www.carers.org), for example, have information about financial help, legal issues, ways of keeping healthy as a carer, or equipment in the home and for mobility.

Locally, Dorset Council (www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/carers) and Age UK in Dorchester (01305 269444) have similar information, while the

Leonardo Trust (www.leonardotrust.org) can make grants to individual carers for a surprisingly wide range of help, from respite breaks and short holidays, to home improvements, to counselling.

Unpaid carers in Dorset can use the Carers Card: showing this to any business signed up to the scheme will obtain a discount, concession or preferential service. To apply, phone the Dorset Adult Access Team on 01305 221016.

A BUSY printmaking workshop was held at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis over the recent Bank Holiday weekend.

Karen Bowskill of 10 by 8 Print Studio in Uplyme hosted ‘INK A celebration of Printmaking’ in the mill’s Courtyard Gallery, displaying her own work and information about techniques, as well as inviting visitors to join in by helping to create a giant, geometric lino print.

The workshop proved popular, especially with children, and Karen will now be holding regular events at the Town Mill.

Karen studied Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough University and worked for many years as a Life Skills tutor in London and Bristol.

Her work reflects the space, energy and movement found in the local area.

She predominately produces monoprints and drypoints, but has recently become interested in block printing with lino onto fabrics.

Birds of prey will not be used to scare off seagulls

LYME Regis Town Council will not be employing the service of eagles to frighten away seagulls – but it took the casting vote of new mayor Brian Larcombe to reject the idea.

A report on a successful trial using two American eagles in April went before the full council at last week’s meeting. Operations manager Matt Adamson-Drage reported that the eagles were not flown but their presence produced an immediate response from seagulls. They took to the air and ascended to a height of safety.

Mr Adamson-Drage said the interest from the public was overwhelming and the event also attracted significant interest from the media, including television, radio and national newspapers.

The demonstration was staged by Xtreme Falconry but Mr Adamson-Drage said it would be very expensive to employ them throughout the summer, as they charged £95 an hour.

A more pragmatic approach would be to employ Xtreme Falconry periodically throughout the school summer holidays and align their presence to the council’s campaign not to feed seagulls. As on the April demonstration, the eagles would not be flown but perched.

The cost of using the eagles from 12noon to 4pm on six separate occasions would be £2,280, expenditure that was not included in the 2019/20 budget but could be met by drawing down reserves.

Town clerk John Wright re-emphasised the interest in the trial, saying: “I have never known us to be inundated by organisations across the world – Norway, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany. We were getting calls from television with daily coverage of what was going on.”

Councillor Larcombe said the issue should be considered in terms of the effectiveness of chasing birds away. He thought they should concentrate on encouraging people not to feed the seagulls.

He said: “It was very successful, lots of enjoyment for people who came out and saw them. I would like to think of these six days as a prolonged trial and I would like to think that if this goes well we could extend it next year and maybe look at Easter as well.

“I am all in favour of this and I think it worked terrifically.”

Councillor Richard Doney commented: “Personally I don’t think this is good value for money. I have made the point several times when we discussed this before and I notice the word ‘trial’ has been used again. By my standards, no way was this a trial, it was a demonstration.

“Different people have different views on the outcome. I’m not going to vote against having them because of £2,000 worth of publicity but I don’t want us to kid ourselves that it’s going to make much different to the seagulls.”

Councillor David Ruffle said it was a “win-win situation” from a publicity point of view but it was a temporary solution and seagulls were not stupid.

He commented: “At the May fete last year they were flying falcons. As soon as they put the falcon up the seagulls dispersed but within 30 seconds they descended on the falcon and mobbed him. The instant reaction of the seagull is one of fright and the first thing they do is mess everywhere.”

The council was split on whether to proceed with the recommendation to use the eagles for six days in the summer, but it was rejected on the casting vote of the mayor.

THE headteacher and deputy head of Mrs Ethelston’s Primary School in Uplyme will be raising funds for Cancer Research UK by taking part in the Jurassic Coast Challenge this weekend.

Michaela Kite and Katy Lyons (pictured left) will be walking 50km of the Jurassic Coast in memory of David Williams, a parent from Mrs Ethelston’s who was heavily involved in the school community and died of a brain tumour at the start of the 2018 school year.

They hosted a coffee morning at Uplyme Village Hall on Saturday, May 25 to boost their funds, which was well supported by the schoolchildren and parents, and included a performance by the school choir.

Horticultural society to stage 90th Summer Show UPLYME & Lyme Regis Horticultural Society will host its 90th Summer Show on Saturday, July 13, from 1pm to 5pm at Uplyme Village Hall and the King George V playing fields.

The show is focused on family entertainment and attracts up to 1,000 visitors. Stallholders are now being invited to take part in the event, with stalls costing just £7 for local organisations, charities and those holding demonstrations, and £15 for trade stands.

Among the many attractions at this year’s event will be a circus skills workshop by Higher Beings. For anyone inspired by the film ‘The Greatest Showman’ there will be an opportunity to try out all sorts of circus skills, so whether you have a toddler who would like the balance track, or you’re an 80 year old who’s keen to master the unicycle, there’s something for everyone.

The family dog show is also a big draw for visitors. In seven classes there will be plenty of fun for participants and spectators alike. Sharon Foxhall, local dog trainer and breeder of Great Danes, will act as judge for all the dog show classes.

Music also features on the show programme, with sessions by HiDDeN, a blues, folk and popular soft-rock band, and by Lyme Regis Town Band.

Other attractions include free train rides and demonstrations with alpacas, spinning and quilting, and wildlife and butterfly conserva-

tion.

Refreshments will be available all afternoon with cream teas and light snacks in the village hall, the cricket club bar and ice creams on the playing field.

And of course everyone is invited to participate in the show competitions for horticulture and home produce, with 148 categories to enter and 27 cups plus rosettes and special prizes up for grabs.

Church hosting flower festival UPLYME Church is hosting a flower festival this weekend, open until Sunday, June 9.

Beach sculptures to tackle littering TOWN councillors are considering the erection of temporary sculptures on Lyme Regis beach for six weeks in the summer to encourage people not to litter.

The sculptures will take the form of an eight-feet high plastic drinks bottle, two pieces of cutlery six-feet tall and a styro-foam chip/burger box measuring four feet by four feet.

The proposal from Litter Free Coast & Sea was presented to the council last week. Whist the idea was generally accepted, members did not think the main sandy beach was a suitable location but have agreed to have further talks to find a more acceptable location.

Mr Wright reported that the sculpture would be funded by Litter Free Coast and Sea and The Arts Development Company. Applications for similar installations are being made in West Bay, Weymouth and Swanage.

Architectural designer Jack Raisey has been commissioned to produce the sculptures. He says they will create a “striking silhouette” against the beachscape that will encourage closer inspection, where beach-goers will find short illustrated facts and statistics outlining why it is important to eradicate single-use plastics.

Deputy mayor Councillor Jeff Scowen said it was a “great and interesting feature” but pointed out that Lyme had a tidal beach and wondered where the sculptures would go.

He said: “The beach is very small and very packed at times, so that’s my reservation. I think they are great and a super tourist attraction.”

Councillor David Ruffle said he agreed with Councillor Scowen’s reservations but he thought it was a tremendous idea.

“I think people will appreciate them and if it stops people littering the beach, all well and good,” he added.

Councillor Gill Stammers was in favour of the proposal thought it would attract media attention and further engage young people who were already taking note of environmental issues.

Councillor Michaela Ellis said it was a good idea but also expressed concerns about where the sculptures would be sited. She said the size of the installation could block a lot of the beach and people were already crying out for space.

The mayor, Councillor Brian Larcombe, offered an alternative view, commenting: “A drinks bottle, a knife and fork and a food box is the type of thing you see as you drive by a motorway service station. It doesn’t tell me to take my rubbish home, it tells me this is an eating place.

“Personally. I would not like to see it on the beach. If we put it on the beach it’s adding litter.

This size, I don’t think it is appropriate.”

Councillor Larcombe said he was unsure whether Lyme had a litter problem, adding that many visitors already respected the beach but the problem was with overflowing bins on the seafront.

“I think this is a measure for a different kind of resort and I think Lyme is not one of them,” he added.

AN outline sketch of the proposed beach sculptures Councillor Scowen pointed out that the sculptures would only be in place for six weeks and the exact location had not been finalised. He suggested they look for an appropriate site for rejecting the idea.

Councillor John Broom admitted he could understand the message but said he was hate to see it on the sandy beach, instead suggesting the pebble beach near Cobb Gate.

Councillor Larcombe agreed this would be a better location but his main concerns were the size of the sculptures and sending out a message that was not necessary.

“We are almost insulting them by saying ‘come on, take your rubbish home’. They are already doing that,” he added.

“I definitely don’t think the main beach is right.

We have enough clutter on the front, we have got signs all over the place, we have all sorts of stuff on the beach.

“There must be a point where we stop doing so much of this because it’s starting to change the nature of what is a very beautiful front beach and we have got to be very careful particularly something of this size.

“The message is not entirely obvious. It seems

to advertise that we are an eating place.”

Councillor Graham Turner said he did not agree with the proposal, describing it as a waste of time and money. Councillor Stan Williams also expressed concerns about the seafront already being overcrowded.

Councillor Scowen said they needed to think “outside the box, in this case the chip/burger box”.

“I can see real merit in this and it will be a great talking point and good PR for the town,” he added.

The council agreed to go ahead with the project in principle if a suitable location for the sculptures could be found.

In the meantime, Councillor Belinda Bawden questioned what could be done about the overflowing bins and Councillor Kelsey Ellis suggested they needed more, as people left rubbish next to overflowing bins.

Town clerk John Wright assured members that the council was working very hard with Dorset Waste Partnership to ensure that the bins were regularly collected. The council also employed someone to sweep up the seafront.

West Dorset MP Sir Oliver Letwin came to Lyme Regis to meet with the new council as part of the members’ induction programme.

Top of the agenda was the impact the new Dorset Council would have on the town council and how public services were likely to be delivered in future.

Speaking to councillors, Sir Oliver said: “I think the new unitary is going to want, if it can, to devolve certain powers and responsibilities to town and parish councils.

“There is a commercial negotiation between you and them, which is effectively between the tax payers of Lyme Regis and the tax payers of Dorset and I’m sure that will be quite a complicated thing.

“There will be some pressure on Dorset Council to deliver things by leaving them to town and parish councils, or else to close those. There will be some things they would think the tax payers of Dorset as a whole shouldn’t be sustaining.”

Sir Oliver said this wouldn’t happen overnight, as the unitary authority had much higher priorities to address first, including housing, social care and children’s services.

He said Dorset Council would also be considering which services could be better managed locally.

“Where there’s a service or activity that costs X amount, they don’t expect to save a single penny but they think it will be better managed locally,” he said.

“I suspect there will be issues of capacity. There are things Lyme Regis Town Council can very well manage without disrupting operation that couldn’t be

managed at a smaller parish council.

“It’s quite important to sort out what you do feel comfortable you can do well and not end up accepting responsibility and find you are a completely different organisation to before.”

Councillors also asked the MP if more funding would come from central government for the police and ambulance service.

Sir Oliver said he anticipated more funding for the ambulance service, which he admitted was ‘too thinly stretched’, but he doubted there would be any notable increase in police funding.

He said: “There will be more money in the ambulance service and that should have a significant effect on the South Western Ambulance Service on the whole over the next two years.”

However, he acknowledged that as more calls came from heavily populated areas, ambulances had to travel from those areas to less populated places, resulting in longer waiting times.

The MP said he didn’t believe the pressure on national police resources were specifically related to the problems in Lyme Regis.

He said: “The Chief Constable has to put the resources where the crime needs to be prevented. The complaints we have been getting from people say there are not enough police in Lyme Regis, but it’s not a crime-ridden environment.

“It’s getting some anti-social behaviour but even if you doubled police resources you would still get that problem.

“I think there’s a deal to be struck where when there is an issue of lowlevel disturbance, which I think is what we’re mainly talking about, the town council works with the police and co-

operates in funding and organising more PCSO activity.

“I doubt you actually need a largescale police force. What you need is more police presence, which isn’t going to do anything about serious crime but makes people feel the police are being attentive.”

Councillors also discussed planning matters with Sir Oliver and asked how the town council could have a greater say on developments within Lyme Regis.

“If you want to have a decisive impact on planning you need a neighbourhood plan,” said Sir Oliver. “That then gives you some serious control over what happens in Lyme Regis.”

However, he said formulating a neighbourhood plan would be a ‘serious undertaking’ and he acknowledged the town’s ‘geographical complexities’, including land stability, sharing a border with another county, the limited availability of land and the high number of listed buildings, would present a challenge.

Members also spoke to the MP about the proposed Dorset National Park, which the town council has yet to adopt a formal position on.

Sir Oliver said: “I’m not personally persuaded it’s a good idea.”

The councillors also took the opportunity to enlist his help in getting traffic signs on the A35, which must be approved by Highways England.

The town council requested signs to help with traffic flow in the town over a year ago but is still waiting for approval, which Sir Oliver said he would ‘take up with Highways England’.

UNITY, friendship and respect were the main themes of mayor-making this week.

Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE was formally installed as the town’s first citizen at the traditional ceremony in the Guildhall.

Former mayor, Cllr Michaela Ellis passed the chains of office to Cllr Larcombe, who will be supported by his wife Wendy as mayoress, Cllr Jeff Scowen as deputy mayor, and Cllr Belinda Bawden as deputy mayoress.

Those who made speeches shared their hopes for a united council, a closer link between the council and community,

and mutual respect.

There was also praise for the town’s many organisations and volunteers and recognition of the beauty of Lyme Regis.

Special mention was given to the 75th anniversary of the DDay landings and the American GIs who were based in Lyme Regis awaiting the start of the operation.

In closing the evening, the mayor Cllr Brian Larcombe said: “Lyme has to respect the past but it has to recognise the future. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate Lyme Regis.”

Planning application for cash point rejected DORSET Council has thrown out plans for a cash machine in Lyme Regis.

The town council was disappointed to learn last week the planning application for an ATM at the top of Bell Cliff had been rejected.

We have been trying hard since June 2017 to address the lack of ATMs in the town following the closure of all the banks and have worked with CashZone to install a machine.

The project has moved slowly

as a power supply and phone line had to be installed and CashZone changed the design of its machine.

A planning application was finally submitted in March this year, with the hope of having an ATM in place by the summer.

Dorset Council rejected the application due to the proposed site being in front of a listed building.

We’re now exploring with CashZone whether a different location is possible.

With its old-school charm and superb service, the Royal Lion Oak Room excels DINING OUT SPECIAL

W

HEN I first started out as a reporter, at the tender age of 17, local newspapers covered virtually every event that took place.

And in those days that meant attending every annual dinner and dance which necessitated me having to buy my first dinner jacket whilst still a teenager, which all my mates thought was a bit odd.

I also took ballroom dancing lessons so I didn’t look totally out of place as the evenings wore on - and that was looked upon as even odder by my pals. One of them always referred to me with much glee as “twinkle toes”. He still does sometimes. It’s surprising we’re still friends 50 years later.

In Lyme Regis such events were invariably held at the Royal Lion which was really the social centre of the town. These were the days when the Lion was run by Bob Dunne, a much respected licensee who also ran the Volunteer Arms just up the road.

Rarely a Saturday night passed during the winter when there wasn’t some sort of function at the Lion, with the dinner being served upstairs in the hotel restaurant and ballroom. All the men wore Penguin suits and the ladies were in ballgowns. Quaintly, the ticket always informed you that there would be “carriages at 1am”. Never did see those carriages.

The Lion was also the most popular venue for weddings and if I remember correctly there was a Hampshire motor club that came to Lyme every year for a weekend to hold their annual bash at Lyme’s premier hotel.

Virtually, every organisation in town held a dinner-dance, including the Rotary Club, Round Table, Freemasons, Sailing Club, Chamber of Trade and Skittles League, the latter being a male-only event, so no dancing afterwards but the scene of quite a few punch-ups.

There was one classic occasion when two brothers went to fight and knocked over the grandfather clock in the bar.

I can remember the late Mike Leeming being the chief chef at the

Lion, to be followed many years later by his son, Jon, now cheffing at The Volunteer, and our favourite barman was Jim Hayball. Jim only took the barman’s job to help out but ended up staying 40 years. His son, Brian, also became a publican/hotelier, at one time running the Mariners Hotel and the Rock Point Inn with his wife Julie before retiring to Lanzarote.

The Lion continued as a Bass Charrington house after Bob Dunn’s retirement. The next door New Inn was acquired and run as the Long Bar, managed by the late Bert Cable, and later turned into rooms. There was a number of managers who came and went before the Lion was sold in the 1970s to Uplyme butcher Bob Irish and his wife Margaret and their friend Jack Cross. I remember going to the auction in Crewkerne as there was much conjecture over who was going to buy it and was gobsmacked with how much it went for. I can’t remember the exact sum but it was certainly in six figures, a princely sum in those days.

Bob, Margaret and Jack were popular mine hosts and rebuilt what was a dwindling hotel and bar trade and also built an indoor bowls facility at the back.

In the 1980s the hotel was acquired by Brian and Judy Sineisi who invested heavily in the building, turning the bowls area into a swimming pool and adding bedrooms at the back with views over the old town.

The current owner, Miss Lesley Stone, acquired the Royal Lion in 2002, having gained extensive experience in the hotel trade running establishments in Bournemouth, Southampton and the New Forest.

Since then she has invested significantly in improving facilities at the hotel, refurbishing the 33 bedrooms on a number of occasions in the last 17 years. Miss Stone has also been a huge supporter of local events and organisations in the town and is keen to maintain the Lion’s reputation as the principal locations for the town’s big social occasions.

After many years of improvements, the Royal Lion is probably more successful than it has ever

been. The bar has a fine reputation for its food and the ground floor Monmouth Room is well used by residents and locals who want a more quiet and leisurely atmosphere. The upstairs restaurant, now the Oak Room, is still the dining room for guests but is available for non-residents, weddings and family celebrations and dinner-dances with a menu fitting a hotel of this standard. Oak beams, wood panelling and an open fire help to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

Next year Lyme Regis Musical Theatre (formerly the operatic society) has chosen the Oak Room as the venue for their 100th anniversary dinner with some members attending having their wedding reception at the Lion many years ago. It promises to be a sparkling occasion.

To sample the delights of the Lion’s blend of classic and modern cuisine, masterminded by head chef David Burns, Miss Stone invited my wife and I and two friends, Danny and Jo Hopkins, to dine in the Oak Room. We had spent the early evening listening to a 32-piece Norwegian big band at the Marine Theatre, part of the Jazz Jurassica weekend, so it turned out to be a delightful bank holiday treat.

The Oak Room operates just as you would expect in an hotel with the Lion’s reputation – crisp white tablecloths, silver service and smartly dressed waiting

staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.

The presence of resident pianist Chris Magarth playing throughout the evening added a touch of old-world class to the evening.

I’m a sucker for soup and chose to start with a piping hot bowl of cream of leak and potato with croutons. Jackie and Jo chose the wine poached pear with crumbled blue cheese, candied walnuts and honey mustard dressing whilst Danny selected Lyme Bay scallops with beetroot and horseradish puree, pickled cucumber and strawberry vinaigrette. We were all pleased with our first course choice.

For mains, I plumped for the corn fed breast of chicken with an unusual accompaniment - sage and onion bread and butter pudding with aubergine fritters in a white wine a chive velouté. It was the first time I’ve had bread and butter pudding as a first course, but it was delicious if not a bit filling, but very unusual. I’m not great fan of aubergine but served as a fritter it was an unexpected but delightful touch.

Jackie and Jo both ordered the grilled fillet of salmon with samphire, roasted new potatoes and saffron in a tomato concasse cream which looked very appetising. Danny chose the oven baked rump of lamb, sautéed spring greens in a rosemary and recurrent jus. Again no complaints all round.

The vegetarian option on the menu was an asparagus and minted pea risotto and for the less adventurous pan fried ribeye steak was available with cherry tomatoes, field mushroom and hand-cut chips in a peppercorn sauce.

There were five options on the sweet menu but all four of us could not resist the mandarin and stem ginger tart with passionfruit sorbet. None of us were disappointed.

For the record, the other sweets were sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice-cream, lemon posset with berry compote and homemade shortbread, fresh fruit salad and a section of Dorset cheeses with quince jelly, celery and grapes, followed by tea or coffee with homemade petit fours.

The Lion has a well-stocked and varied cellar and Danny picked out a very acceptable South African red Stollenbosh which accompanied our meal very well.

Price-wise, our choices were well within the expectation of an up-market hotel, particularly taking into consideration the standard of service. The starters were priced between £6 and £9, main courses £17 to £20 pounds and desserts £6 and £8.

Non-residents can also enjoy a full English breakfast in The Oak Room and there is an extensive bar menu downstairs with daily specials.

Record crowds enjoy Jazz Jurassica THIS year’s Jazz Jurassica, held over the Bank Holiday weekend, attracted record crowds to Lyme Regis with a diverse mix of music involving scores of musicians playing around the town.

Audiences packed venues and the seafront for the festival’s four day musical extravaganza which organisers say was their most successful to date.

The festival featured a 23-piece big band from Norway, a ten-piece brass funk band and a 13strong gospel choir in a roof-raising finale at the Marine Theatre.

Saturday’s headliner, blues guitarist Laurence Jones, attracted a massive crowd for his first UK gig of the year. In an electrifying performance he proved why people are calling him the new Eric Clapton.

Free music was also enjoyed by large crowds on the seafront throughout the weekend, incorporating B Sharp’s annual Busking Festival on Saturday (see below).

This year organisers also included new venues to cater for an increased number of events and anchoring it more firmly into the town.

“We wanted to get more venues involved so the town becomes the musical destination of choice over the Bank Holiday weekend,” said festival organiser Julie Sheppard.

“It meant we could offer a greater range of music – from cool jazz, through blistering blues to sizzling soul, attracting people who wouldn’t normally go near a “jazz” festival. We’ve had over-

whelmingly positive feedback from audiences which suggests we’re getting there.

“We’d like to thank all the fantastic musicians who performed over the weekend, the technicians on the seafront and in the theatre, our small army of volunteers, the venues for staging our events, the wonderfully supportive staff in the Tourist Information Centre, Lyme Regis Town Council and last but not least, our animated and committed audiences.”

Organisers are already planning next year’s festival and vow to keep it local and community based.

Julie added: “There’s enormous pressure to get bigger and bigger but we want to retain the intimacy of being part of the town. We’re not Glastonbury. This is all about putting on great music for discerning audiences in a stunning seaside setting.”

Busking success for B Sharp

LYME Regis youth music charity B Sharp showed off a fantastic range of talent at its annual Busking Festival.

The one-day festival was held on Saturday, May 25, tying in with Jazz Jurassica, and saw many residents and visitors enjoying and joining in with musical performances on the seafront.

The programme included were young bands, drummers, jazz duos, solo pianists, a ukulele orchestra, DJs and singer-songwriters from the local area and across the UK. B Sharp’s music leaders and young trainees were on hand to support all the musicians when needed, and even opened the festival with their own performance.

To help with its costs of running B Sharp’s on-going music programme for young people

over the whole year, buskers donated 40 per cent of their collection to B Sharp and many donated all their takings.

Kelly Osborne one of the event organisers said: “As well as the great performers, we had lots of interactive activities for visitors this year – with a ukulele workshop run by the Lyme Luggers, a recycled sounds instrument making workshop run by Plastic Free Lyme Regis, a beach hut jam, and a pop-up choir too” B Sharp is open for young musicians to sign up to now for a variety of weekly music-making projects on offer. Celebrations for theatre that’s been at heart of community for 125 years IN 1894 the Marine Theatre was born on the water’s edge in Lyme Regis and this year a whole array of events and fundraising is being held for the beloved arts venue that has been at the centre of the town’s cultural and social life for 125 years.

Celebrations have already got underway and this month the Marine will stage ‘The Lyme Regis Revue’, in which cultural groups from the community are joining forces for a variety show like none other.

Four performances of the show will be held from Thursday, June 20 to Saturday, June 22.

Also this month, on June 16, there will be a free community screening of the 1949 classic film ;All Over The Town’, which was filmed in Lyme Regis and features the Marine Theatre several times.

In July, Sir Ian McKellen will appear in a soldout fundraiser at the Marine for a youth theatre project and to refurbish the dressing rooms, and in December theatre patron Andrew Rattenbury the Lyme-born screenwriter for many of television’s greatest hits such as ‘Eastenders’ and ‘Doc Martin’ - is writing a special play focussing on the Marine Theatre as at the heart of the community.

Other theatre patrons are also supporting the fundraising efforts, with chef Mark Hix MBE having already held his recent book launch at the Marine and Deep Purple rock star Ian Gillan funding the venue’s new website.

Supporters are also being asked to contribute by ‘adopting a year’ from the Marine’s 125-year history for £125, for which they’ll receive a number of benefits include an invite to an anniversary party to be staged later in the year.

In 1894 the Marine opened as the Drill Hall. Primarily it was a place of entertainment and training

for the military, such as the Lyme Regis Musical and Literary Society’s monthly entertainments.

In the 1930s it was a cinema and the art deco front was built, which remains an iconic landmark for the Dorset coast today.

During the war American troops used the Marine as a place to eat and entertain, with James Cagney and Joe Louis believed to have performed here.

Later in the 1940s and 50s, it was used by professional theatre companies for ‘Seaside Summer Seasons’. Posters from the time describe family entertainment, comedian, cabaret, and soprano singing - the entertainment was varied.

The Marine Theatre was bought by the then Lyme Regis Borough Council and refurbished in 1962, with the upper circle replaced with a bar.

The swinging 60s reached Dorset as the Marine became a dance hall and London promoter Bob Alexander brought acts down every Saturday for his popular ‘Big Beat’ nights.

Acts included The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, and The Troggs. The Marine was also the destination for huge jazz acts such as Acker Bilk, Chris Barber, and Kenny Ball.

In the 1970s Fleetwood Mac and Status Quo performed at the Marine.

In 2001 the people of Lyme Regis voted in a referendum for the Marine to be taken over by an independent charity, and today the Marine is run by the LymeArts Community Trust. Recent years have seen a resurgence with acts such as This Is The Kit, Tom Allen, Jethro and Alabama3 all appearing at the venue.

Lyme honours its seafaring heritage LYME Regis honoured its lifeboat crew and seafaring organisations in a poignant and moving ceremony on Rogation Sunday (May 25).

The annual Blessing of the Boats service was held outside the lifeboat station on the Cobb, to remember all those lost at sea and pray for good fortune for those who work, volunteer or enjoy leisure activities on the water.

The interdenominational service was led by the Reverend Rosemary Bragg of St Michael’s Parish Church with prayers from the Revered Eric Holstock of Lyme Regis Baptist Church.

A large crowd gathered as volunteer members of the lifeboat crew lined the slipway, along with the new Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe; mayoress Wendy Larcombe; deputy mayor Councillor Jeff Scowen; Dorset councillor Daryl Turner; members of the Royal British Legion and Lyme’s seafaring organisations, including the sailing club and sea school, gig club and power boat club.

Hymns were accompanied by Lyme Regis Town Band and musical entertainment also came from the Harbour Voices choir.

The mayor read the lesson and Lorcan Finn of Lyme Regis Sailing Club read a poem.

The blessing itself was carried out by the Reverend Bragg, who said how proud Lyme was of its lifeboat crew and maritime heritage.

Floral wreaths were then passed down the slipway by members of the seafaring organisations and Royal British Legion, and handed to members of the lifeboat crew who placed them on the water’s edge for a short silence, before taking them out to sea on the lifeboat, accompanied by one of the town’s gigs.

Blessing of the Boats this year coincided with an open day at the lifeboat station, where crew members and supporting volunteers welcomed an estimated 250 visitors, including many children.

Family celebrations at football club dinner LYME Regis Football Club lived up to its reputation of being a family-led organisation at its annual presentation night and dinner on Saturday.

The event marked the end of another successful season for the Seasiders, with the First Team finishing fifth after its first season in the Devon & Exeter Premier Division; the Reserves also coming fifth in Division 5; and the Rovers winning the Perry Street & District League’s Division 3 and the John Fowler Cup. It was a particularly proud occasion for club treasurer and fundraiser Nicky Levan, who received the Jack Loveridge Trophy for Clubperson of the Year - the third consecutive year the award has gone to a female member of the club.

The night was made extra special for Nicky as she presented her father Dave Roberts’ trophy for the Rovers Player’s Player to her eldest son Ben Bowditch, and watched younger son Cody Bowditch named Young Player

Brothers Toby Fowler and Robbie Fowler also celebrated, with Toby named Rovers Manager’s Player and Robbie taking home the Philip Evans Trophy for Reserves Manager’s Player.

For the First Team awards, manager Gerard Hitchcock selected Gary Knight as his player of the year, while Kingsley Wellman took home the Robert Broome Trophy for Players’ Player.

The Reserves Players’ Player was Nicky Land and Rovers player Pete Peacock was named the club’s top scorer this season.

The Rovers were also presented medals for winning the league and the John Fowler Cup, which they won on Easter Monday.

Spanish player Jaime Rodriguez, who is returning to Mallorca after a

year working in Lyme Regis but delayed his flight home to attend the annual dinner, was presented with a canvas photo of the First Team with the words ‘Once a Seasider.. always a Seasider’, by club president Philip Evans MBE. Players also gave bouquets of flowers to several of the club’s female supporters and special guests.

A four-course dinner, prepared by local caterers Ray and Diane Carrington, was enjoyed by 77 players, supporters and guests in a marquee at the Davey Fort ground.

Speeches were made by club chairman Howard Larcombe, the new Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, Richard White of the Perry Street & District League, and Neil Anthony from the Devon & Exeter League.

The presentations and speeches were followed by celebrations inside the clubhouse, with live music from local band DeltaTango7.

Tales from behind the lens of our award-winning photographer ONE of the great things about being a press photographer is that you get to meet famous and extraordinary people, such as Second World War hero Bill Millins.

Bill played his bagpipes whilst under fire on DDay 1944 when the allied forces invaded the beaches in northern France.

He began his apparently suicidal serenade immediately upon jumping from the ramp of the landing craft into the icy water on Sword beach.

He struck up with 'Heiland Laddie' and continued even as the man behind him was hit and dropped into the sea and sank.

Bill lived out his life in the Devon town of Dawlish where I caught up with him and set up a photograph on the shoreline at Teignmouth.

He was a hero for a special reason; quotes from his colleagues tell of the inspiration he instilled in the soldiers as they ran up the beach to the tune of bills pipes. “I shall never forget hearing the skirl of Bill Millin’s pipes,” said one.

When Bill and his soldiers came to the crossing which later became known as Pegasus Bridge, troops on the other side signalled frantically that it was under sniper fire. Bill was ordered to shoulder his bagpipes and play the commandos over. “It seemed like a very long bridge,” Bill said afterwards.

Bill was surprised not to have been shot, and he mentioned this to some Germans who had been taken prisoner.

They said that they had not shot at him because they thought he had gone off his head.

A feat not forgotten in the 1962 Hollywood movie ‘The Longest Day’ starring John Wayne and a host of famous actors.

Bill died in 2010 but the story of his bravery will live on for ever.

Crossing will ruin wonderful views ■ I HAVE just seen for the first time the excellent 2019 guide to Lyme Regis.

The wonderful views are so memorable which I remember so well having been brought up here and my family being residents for several generations.

What a terrible shame therefore that one of the most iconic views of the town immortalised by Richard Austin and the late great artist Ivor Wilson and others is about to be ruined.

The proposal to build a pedestrian crossing half way down Broad Street with its 24 hour flashing amber lights is not only absurd but a complete waste of public money.

This is presumably for the use of a tiny minority who may or may not use it.

We have survived for about a hundred years of motor traffic without this need, but now we will have to put up with a loss of valuable car parking spaces, extra congestion and a blight on the town.

The street is narrow enough for anyone to cross at any point when there is a break in the traffic so who at the top or bottom of Broad Street will bother to walk up or down to wait another boring few minutes to get across ?

Whoever processed this ridiculous scheme should be ashamed of themselves.

Just wait until it is installed and see!

Unforgettable experience for Lyme greenkeeper

Sailing club hosts youth regatta VERY light winds on Saturday saw a good turn out of young sailors, including invited visitors from Axe, for Lyme Regis Sailing Club's Youth Regatta.

Many were towed or paddled to the vicinity of the start, where Race Officer Jerry Rook was waiting on the committee boat to be able to get them underway.

The calm waters made it safe for crews to raft up and enjoy water activities and games, monitored by safety leader Jim Thomas and team in their Ribs.

Eventually, a sea breeze filled in, just strong enough to allow Jerry to call competitors to the start for one race, three groups having separate starts , for experienced racers, novice racers and Optimist dinghies.

The more skilled made two rounds of a larger course, while all crews completed one round to get a finishing placing in their group.

They came ashore to enjoy a sunny barbecue cooked by Jo Law and her parent helpers, a friendly social occasion for youth members and parents.

This was followed by a prizegiving by the Commodore, presenting engraved club glasses and vouchers.

Of his experience, Jamie said: “Overall I feel this trip to the U.S has really opened my eyes to expanding my own personal development as a greenkeeper and encouraged me to go further with my education which I can therefore use to enhance my own club.

“It was truly a pleasure to have worked with such a professional group of guys who I can call friends for life. I would love to get the chance to do more volunteer work in the future if the opportunity arises. Lyme Regis Golf Club have supported me throughout the trip, as have my colleagues by putting in the extra hours whilst I’ve been away. This has kept Lyme Regis looking at its best and I’m very grateful to everyone involved.”

Jibu claims six victims to steer Uplyme into third place UPLYME & Lyme Regis Cricket Club jumped into third place in the Devon League Division E East after a 20-point victory at the King George 5 playing field over Ottery St Mary 2nd X1 on Saturday.

Ottery won the toss and put and understrength Uplyme into bat and they got off to a good start with openers Robert Thom (21) and Tom Daniel (43), scoring steadily.

LYME Regis greenkeeper Jamie Hughes returned from his trip abroad working at the second major championship of the golfing year at Bethpage Black golf course in Farmingdale, New York. His morning shift started at 3:30 am, lasting five hours, and the evening one began at 4:30 pm, lasting as long as it took to get the work done.

This unforgettable experience gave him an invaluable insight into how a major championship golf course is set up to the very highest level. Many of the tasks are similar to any other golf course except for the extensive man power and unlimited budget offered in the weeks leading up to the event.

The 95 strong greenstaff supplied a standard of course which can only be seen to be believed, going to extensive measures to produce a type of course only suitable for the best in the business. For example. on championship days 20 greenstaff were given the job of fluffing up the rough that had any tyre marks or footprints from the previous day’s play.

Lyme ladies lead the way

By Paul Moffatt ONCE again it was the Lyme Regis Bowling Club ladies leading the way in the leagues. They had a very fine 10-0 win over Sherborne playing at home.

The men from the championship were not so fortunate when they played Sherborne away, losing 3-7.

The men in Lyme 2 were even less fortunate, being whitewashed away to Melcombe Regis on what I am led to believe was a very challenging green.

Better success for the men when they played Dorchester in the Top Club, winning four of the five disciplines.

The ladies lost three disciplines to one in their Top Club encounter with Greenhill, not losing by more than five shots in any discipline. The only success came in the pairs, with Chris Barber and Lesley Broom overcoming the Greenhill pair.

In the only friendly played this week, Lyme went down heavily to the South Dorset BA. Paul Pomeroy and Paul Moffitt threw away a 16-shot lead in the quarter final of the County

ROVERS CELEBRATE!

LYME Regis Football Club celebrated another good season, both on and off the field of play at their annual presentation night at the Davey Fort last Friday.

The guests included the newly-elected Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian

Larcombe MBE, and his wife Wendy.

Councillor Larcombe’s brother Howard is club chairman, serving for a record 12 years, and his nephew Rob Larcombe is joint manager of the successful Lyme Rovers team who pulled off the double this year, winning the

Uplyme hosting cricket festival UPLYME and Lyme Regis Club Cricket Club are hosting a three-team 20 over tournament at the King George V playing field on Sunday with the winning team gaining a place in the knock-out stages of the Devon Cricket League Cup. The T20 tournament will start at 10am and will feature the village team, Sidbury CC and Woodbury CC. The club will open at 10am with the first game - Uplyme v Sidbury, starting at 10.30am. The Sidbury v Woodbury game

will start at 1.45pm.

During the tea break the club’s new roller, paid for by fundraising from current and former members and community organisations, will be unveiled and dedicated to former club chairman, the late Paul Messer. A plaque wil also unveiled.

The final game, Uplyme v Woodbury, will start at 5pm. There will also be a bar and barbecue all day.

Perry Street Division Three title and the John Fowler Cup. Councillor Larcombe highlighted some of the key events in the club’s history and congratulated all three teams on the standard of football in the past season.

Other guests included the secretary of the Devon and Exeter League, Neil Anthony, who intimated that Lyme Regis Reserves, despite finishing in fifth place in Division Four, may go up a division next season due to reorganisation of the league following the formation of the new Devon League.

Lyme’s First Team also finished in fifth place in the Premier Division, the highest standard the club has played in its 134 years of history.

With a number of top teams going up to the new Devon

League, the Seasiders are considered to be one of the favourites for Premier honours next year.

Lyme’s reputation for being a family-oriented cub was underlined with one family winning three trophies - treasurer Nicky Levan won the Jack Loveridge Trophy for clubperson of the year and her two sons - Cody Bowditch (young player of the year) and Ben Bowditch (Rovers players’ player) were also honoured.

Two brothers - Toby and Robbie Fowler - also won trophies.

Club President Philip Evans MBE presented a photo canvas of the First Team to Jaime Rodriguez who is returning to Spain after playing two seasons for the Seasiders.

Initially Fee was second woman out of the water, and held onto third at the final run, but she was placed fourth overall as an experienced competitor snatched the third place whilst running in a later heat.

Fee experienced the added excitement of being filmed and interviewed as the youngest competitor in the top four and being new to the highly competitive series.

She is now training hard back in Lyme, supervised by Malcom Greenslade and is looking forward to a busy schedule of British and Welsh races over the summer.
