Rifles to march for WWI anniversary THE Rifles will march with pride through Lyme Regis this year as part of the First World War centenary commemorations.

The former Devon & Dorset regiment will exercise its Freedom of the Town on Saturday, September 22, when the town will salute the county regiment and honour the special relationship it has with Lyme Regis, the first town in Dorset to give the county regiment the Freedom of the Borough.

Park and ride refused APPLICATION FOR SIDMOUTH ROAD SITE TURNED DOWN BY DISTRICT

LYME Regis Town Council may launch an appeal after East Devon rejected its application to continue operating a park and ride in Sidmouth Road.

The town council submitted the application for continued temporary use of the site, which lies just across the county border in Uplyme, in March.

East Devon District Council announced last week it had refused the plans due to lack of evidence submitted with the application to justify the need for the facility, and that as a result it would have a

Both Uplyme Parish Council and Uplyme’s district councillor Ian Thomas also opposed the application, resulting in an acrimonious dispute between Uplyme and Lyme councils.

A statement from the district council said: “East Devon’s planning department had previously granted temporary consents for a park and ride use to support businesses in Lyme Regis and visitors to the town, but despite ample time

being given to Lyme Regis Town Council to justify the park and ride’s continued use, the required information has not been received.

“Since 2014, the district’s planning authority has consistently asked Lyme Regis Town Council to gather evidence to justify the need for a park and ride in this location.

Despite the town council having four years in which to do this, the work has still not been carried out.

“In addition, East Devon is not convinced that the proposed site is the best location for a park and ride facility, or that a further park and ride site is required, given that the majority of the traffic does not enter the town from the west on the

A3052 where the site is located, and that the park and ride on Charmouth Road, to the east of Lyme Regis, has very recently been granted planning permission to operate 400 spaces over a longer seasonal period.

“East Devon is happy to entertain a future planning application for the site, but it needs to be supported by justification for the use of the site. In addition, robust evidence of the need for the facility and justification that the proposed site is the most appropriate location to serve visitors to the town must be provided.”

LYME Regis will host a free interactive art installation to raise awareness of the increasing amount of plastic waste found in our oceans.

The ‘Plastic Ocean’ exhibition will be held in the Jubilee Pavilion on Marine Parade between Saturday, June 9 and Friday 15, open daily from 11am to 5pm, and closing at 2pm on the last day.

Eva Fahle-Clouts, a local artist, created the exhibition and invites all to “see beyond the surface of water” with this thought-provoking display.

Council to consider all options after park and ride application refused CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE East Devon District Council and ward member for Trinity, which includes Uplyme, said: “East Devon planners, Uplyme Parish Council and I have worked for several years, in the interest of Lyme Regis traders, residents and visitors, in what has become a uniquely frustrating process.

“Last summer, contrary to planning guidelines, I was able to secure a further last minute temporary consent.

I was only able to do so ‘….to allow the newly formed working group, including representatives from Devon and Dorset County Councils, East Devon and West Dorset District Councils. Lyme Regis Town Council and Uplyme Parish Council, to use such information in the development of a strategic approach to the management of traffic and parking requirements’.

“Sadly, this group has never met. It is disappointing that another planning application (validated on March 19 2018) was submitted by Lyme Regis Town Council, seeking further temporary consent from March 30 2018. The application is essentially a copy of that submitted in 2017, so it again neither offers supporting evidence requested following the 2014 application, nor demonstrates any significant progress in that direction.

“This lack of progress makes it impossible for me to intervene again on the grounds I used in 2017.

“Despite several instances of ‘factual inaccuracy’ by the applicant, I commend both East Devon planners and Uplyme Parish Council on their rigorous adherence to dealing professionally with each successive application, according to planning policy and guidelines.

“Notwithstanding difficulties experienced to date, I am confident that East Devon District Council, Uplyme Parish Council, other local authority neighbours and I, remain willing to work with Lyme Regis Town Council to develop the best possible long-term solution to the management of

traffic and associated parking requirements in and around Lyme Regis and Uplyme.”

Lyme Regis Town Council has announced that it will be spending £25,000 on a traffic survey to be carried out this summer to support the park and ride and help solve traffic congestion issues.

Deputy Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Steve Miller, has responded to East Devon’s decision, saying the council will now look at all options available, including the possibility of appealing the decision.

He said: “Lyme Regis Town Council was extremely disappointed to learn, immediately prior to a busy bank holiday and the school half term, that East Devon District Council refused the application for continued temporary use of the Sidmouth Road park and ride site.

“We are surprised by the tone and content of the press release issued by East Devon District Council, a copy of which was not supplied to the town council. We believe such a release is not normal practice on refusal of a planning application.

“The town council will obviously review available options before deciding how to proceed, which may involve appealing the planning authority’s decision.

“In the meantime, the work to obtain the evidence previously requested by East Devon District Council has already been commissioned via independent experts Hydrock and will continue. However, this has been made more difficult by the refusal of the Sidmouth Road application.

“This work will ascertain the best parking, transport and signage strategies for the town and will be pursued by the town council in the best longterm interests of the residents and businesses of Lyme Regis and those visiting the town we all love.”

It was announced last week that an annual site licence fee had been paid to the landowner of the Sidmouth Road site, in the event planning permission was granted. This will not be refunded, as the council “wants to maintain an interest in the site

It was also announced just a few days before East Devon’s decision that the town council should “concentrate its efforts on running the Charmouth Road park and ride”. They also agreed that this facility would open for all weekends in June, including for Guitars On The Beach.

Councillor Miller added: “The 400-space Charmouth Road Park and ride site will continue to operate throughout the peak summer periods. In addition, the town council has just agreed to extend the bus service to include all June weekends.

“The town council is grateful for the help and support it received from West Dorset District Council, its local representative and the landowner in achieving the permanent permission for the use of the Charmouth Road facility, which is also in an area of outstanding natural beauty.”

Ticketing options at the Charmouth Road park and ride include a £6 return fare to cover up to five people of any combination of ages. Bus pass holders travel free-of-charge. The service runs frequently from 10am to 7.30pm, utilising two double-deck buses.

The Rifles to march through Lyme for Great War commemorations FORMER DEVON & DORSET REGIMENT TO BRING BAND AND BUGLES TO TOWN THE Rifles will march with pride through Lyme Regis this year as part of the First World War centenary commemorations.

The former Devon & Dorset Regiment will exercise its Freedom of the Town on Saturday, September 22, when the town will salute the county regiment and honour the special relationship it has with Lyme Regis, the first town in Dorset to give the county regiment the Freedom of the Borough.

On the same day, the enhanced town war memorial in George’s Square will be officially unveiled ahead of Armistice Day in November.

Both events feature in a programme of local events during 2018 to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War in 1918.

The Devonshire Regiment and the Dorset Regiment were amalgamated to form the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment in 1958, and in 2007 the regiment was merged into The Rifles.

Lyme Regis granted the Freedom of the Borough to the Dorset Regiment in 1945, and today is one of 12 towns in Dorset which has granted Freedom to The Rifles.

The honour can be bestowed on a military unit in recognition of their exceptional service to a town, allowing troops to march through the town with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Trelawny, Rifles regional secretary for the South West, said: “We are all very much looking forward to the event in September.

“Lyme Regis is one of 12 towns in Dorset that have granted The Rifles the great honour of Freedom, but since the Regiment formed in 2007 we have not had the opportunity to march through this beautiful seaside town.

“We plan to bring our Band and Bugles and a marching detachment comprising regular and reserve Riflemen, Army Cadets and veterans of both The Rifles and our predecessors, the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment.

“We very much hope that the occasion will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and we believe that it will underline the close and highly valued connection between The Rifles and the town of Lyme Regis.”

The Rifles were invited to march through the town by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, who was eager to involve the regiment in the town’s centenary commemorations.

Cllr Ellis said: “I am thrilled The Rifles accepted my invitation. It will be a privilege and an honour for the regiment to march through Lyme Regis on this ceremonial occasion.

“I hope many people will line the streets on the day to show their gratitude to the regiment and show their ongoing support for the armed forces.

“Not only will it be quite a spectacle, but also a highly emotional and poignant tribute to men and women who have served, and continue to serve, their county and their country with the utmost distinction.

Precision Waterjet Ltd. has submitted a planning application to West Dorset District Council, to construct a unit comprising of ground floor storage and industrial space, a mezzanine floor with offices and first floor residential accommodation, on land behind Uplyme Business Park on Uplyme Road.

The company is currently based in two units at the business park, providing a high tolerance waterjet cutting service, but the application says it has “outgrown” the buildings and needs a larger premises to secure its future expansion.

The application reads: “The services offered by Precision Waterjet are in high demand and their clients vary from international businesses (such as Rolls Royce, the MoD, Jaguar Landrover, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Biomet and Tetra-

Residents object to takeaway PLANS for a takeaway in Silver Street, Lyme Regis, have been met with strong objection from neighbouring residents.

A planning application has been submitted to West Dorset District Council to change the use of the former Creative Interiors shop at 4 Silver Street from retail to hot food takeaway open until 11pm, and to install an extraction fan.

But neighbouring residents have expressed concerns over the plans, saying it is the “wrong

plans for a workshop and manager’s flat approved in 1996, and for a workshop and offices approved in both 2001 and 2006, but no scheme has been taken forward.

Plans to build 14 residential apartments on the site were withdrawn in 2009 following local objections.

The current application would see the ground floor used to house the waterjet cutters, plus an office, reception area, storage and workshop.The mezzanine level would also be for commercial use and the first floor would comprise the general office, meeting room and welfare facilities.

In addition, a separate pedestrian access is proposed, by means of a bridge structure from Uplyme Business Park giving direct access to the accommodation section of the building on the first floor.

The applications adds: “The first floor is in effect a flat over the commercial space providing accommodation for Mr Bisson and his family.

“The layout of this has been designed so that it benefits from the views over Lyme Regis to Portland Bill whilst not impacting on the amenity of the dwellings in Haye Close and St George’s Hill.

“External works include landscaping, parking and vehicle off loading and on-site turning areas together with refuse and recycling storage areas.

■ THE sides of a Ford Transit Tipper were stolen from Uplyme Industrial Estate in Lyme Regis at about 11pm on Tuesday, May 29.

A dark hatchback car was seen entering the yard of Keeley Windows on the industrial estate. Three sides of the vehicle were taken and the car left with them “hanging out the back”.

Lyme’s new affordable housing to star on BBC Trip of a lifetime for young footballers A NEW affordable housing development in Lyme Regis is set to feature on the BBC. Lyme Regis Community Land Trust’s (CLT) first scheme, which saw 15 affordable rented houses built at Garmans Field, off Timber Hill, was recommended by the National CLT Network to the BBC, which is producing a national news item relating to a forthcoming government announcement on housing. CLT members and residents of the new houses were interviewed for the piece.

YOUNG footballers from Lyme Regis will be given the opportunity of a lifetime – to play at the FA National Football Centre at St George’s Park.

Boys and girls from Lyme Regis Football Club’s Under 12s team are being offered the opportunity thanks to the Rotary Club’s 5-a-side football competition, to be held at the National Football Centre in Burton-Upon-Trent, Staffordshire, on June 16.

This £105million facility, opened in 2012, is the home to England’s 28 national teams, with 13 outdoor pitches, including a replica of the Wembley surface.

The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis has arranged for local youngsters to take part, with a generous grant towards expenses and a new strip especially for the event.

Jurassic Coast captured in museum art exhibition A NEW art exhibition at Lyme Regis Museum will capture the beauty and drama of the Jurassic Coast, spanning 95 miles from East Devon to East Dorset. The exhibition ‘95 Miles in Paint’

by Colin Bentley, will be held at the museum from June 1 to August 31. Museum director David Tucker described the exhibition as “wonderful”, adding that the museum was the perfect location for it.

Jurassic Mule to return as public offers support THE open-top Jurassic Mule bus will return to Lyme Regis following an “outpouring of support” after its sudden closure last year.

Having announced its closure in September 2017, following complaints and issues arising in East Devon, the company received more than 1,000 emails of support and financial sponsorship, meaning it will be up and running again during summer.

AN excellent end to Lyme Regis Football Club’s season was celebrated at our annual presentation night and dinner last Saturday.

Having not been able to play at the Davey Fort for 19 weeks due to wet weather, the Seasiders certainly made up for it in recent days, with the First Team finishing third in the Devon & Exeter League’s Division 1 with hopes of promotion to the premiership, which will be the highest standard of football the club has ever played at.

The Reserves also retained the Football Express Cup and, this week, the Firsts won the Grandisson Cup for the first time - so there has been plenty to celebrate.

I also had an extra reasons to celebrate myself, after being awarded the Jack Loveridge Trophy for clubperson of the year at last weekend’s dinner.

I was beyond proud to pick up the award. My dad served as chairman of the club for 10 years, while I was between the ages of eight and 18, so I practically grew up at the Davey Fort.

As a kid I’m not sure I paid much attention to matters on the pitch, but instead spent Saturdays running around the ground and playing games with the other children - my older sister far too cool to join in, of course.

As we grew up, Zoe and I would decorate the club for the many theme nights and fundraisers dad would concoct (Millenium Ball comes to mind - it took us hours to spray paint those stars!) and we both played for a while in the now-defunct ladies

squad, the Lyme Lazers.

We’d paint our faces to cheer on the Seasiders in cup finals, join in with songs on the minibus home (I’m not sure I was quite old enough for that) and dance the night away in celebration. I even had my first drink at the club.

And things have pretty much stayed that way ever since (minus the face paint). After dad retired as chairman, he was made a life-member and now serves as president, and I joined the committee as minutes secretary and fundraiser. We still go and watch as many Saturday games as possible together.

When I think back to my childhood days at the Davey Fort, the clubhouse is practically unrecognisable today extended social facilities, changing rooms, kitchen and more changes to come this summer, plus we painted it that nice mint colour!

Players, too, have come and gone but the club itself always remains the same. I know I can always rely on others to help at events and look out for one another. The same spirit, the same atmosphere, the same sense of community. Once a Seasider, always a Seasider!

The town was left with just one cash point, outside Tesco Express, after all three local banks closed down, meaning it regularly ran out of money during busy periods.

Lyme’s rising music star releases third EP ‘ Some Say’ RISING music star Joanna Cooke, who hails from Lyme Regis, releases her third EP ‘Some Say’ today (June 1).

‘Some Say’ follows Joanna’s well-received previous EPs, ‘Remember Me’ in 2015 and ‘Wound Up’ 2016 plus the earlier single ‘Last June’, all of which sold out on CD. Lead track for radio airplay on her latest EP is its opening song ‘Black Keys’.

Former Woodroffe School student Joanna Cooke has already seen some success in the music industry, performing 131 live shows in 2017, including 15 festivals. She has also supported British singersongwriter sensation Rag’n’Bone Man on his handpicked bill and The James Taylor Quartet.

Joanna has featured on local radio shows with strong support from both BBC Introducing in Devon and Cornwall, and was named BBC Introducing Artist of the Week on a show aired last November on all 40 BBC local radio stations nationally.

HEY said they would get it right - and they certainly did this Bank Holiday.

I refer, of course, to the town council’s assurance that there would be no repeat of the awful mess left on the Marine Parade, and other associated problems, after the early May Bank Holiday.

Town clerk John Wright put his hand up and admitted the council had failed on that occasion after taking a battering at the annual town meeting and subsequent gathering of the council.

Those of us who are quick to criticise our council should also be prepared to congratulate them with equal speed.

So here goes (deep breath): “Well done Lyme Regis Town Council, its officers, outside staff and members.”

Congratulations also to the Dorset Waste Partnership who played their part in collecting rubbish and emptying bins through the weekend.

Deputy town clerk Mark Green was on duty in Lyme over the weekend, despite the fact he lives many miles from Lyme, and on Monday I saw him checking every waste bin along the seafront

where many extra were placed.

Council staff were also on duty to see that things ran smoothly and there was no one bin which was overflowing.

Bank Holiday Monday was particularly crowded, although Saturday and Sunday not so, thanks to yet another inaccurate weather forecast by the meteorologists which probably resulted in many hundreds of people staying at home.

Lyme will have many busy days in the weeks to come and one more bank holiday at the end of August.

It’s important that the plans put in place for last weekend are extended throughout the rest of the summer if Lyme is to keep it’s reputation as one of the South West’s most beautiful towns.

And that is what really brings people to our town. The festivals and food fairs add to the atmosphere but it is the sheer beauty of the town which is our greatest asset.

That is why the majority of people come here.

We should never underestimate that - or let them down.

Up for the cup - 17 times in ten years!

IT must have been the longest football season in living memory but it ground to a halt on Wednesday when Lyme Regis 1st team completed their fixtures with a 2-1 victory over Heavitree Reserves to lift the Grandisson Cup for the first time in the club’s 133 years of history.

It followed a very gutsy victory for the Reserves who retained the Football Express Cup the previous week, which means the club has won 17 trophies in the last ten years. Incredible for such a small town.

This was followed by the club’s usual rowdy but enjoyable presentation night

in a marquee at the club where an excellent dinner was provided by top scorer, Steve Batey, and his girlfriend, Kirsty Roberts, who have started a new catering company Fossil Food.

We were able to use our new £60,000 kitchen to its full capacity for the first time and I am sure there will be many more such occasions in the future.

Work will now start shortly on the construction of a covered stand for spectators as the second phase of the club’s three-year development programme so generously supported by Lyme Regis Town Council.

FOOD stands on top of the Marine Parade shelters - but none of them were local

Is it time to say ‘enough is enough’?

ON the face of it the clashing of the street food festival and the jazz weekend didn’t seem to cause too much trouble but it was a mistake. I think most councillors agree with this.

It was exacerbated because it was a bank holiday and on the Monday it was gloriously hot. The town was rammed.

Accepting a company from Wales to run the street food festival on top of the Marine Parade shelters has prompted much criticism from local traders who were not given the chance to take part.

The Food Rocks Festival (to be held in September), run by Mark Hix, always gives local businesses the choice to be part of it and the finger has been pointed firmly at the town council for damaging local trade.

The clash of events clearly had some impact on those

food and drink stands which the jazz organisers engage to help defray the cost of bands.

It would be interesting to know how much the company paid to occupy the top of the shelters. Is their fee accepted as a fundraising exercise or just to provide additional attraction for visitors?

If the council allow this to happen again, it may be a good idea to insist that at least a third of the stalls are made available to local traders.

A few eyebrows were also raised when it was learned that the council allowed vehicles access to the top of the shelters by driving down over the steep Lister Gardens, surely a dangerous exercise.

I’m not aware of this happening before.

Permission was granted for this to happen but a number of councillors said they knew

nothing about it and would have opposed the idea.

Some have also questioned the advisability of running any large event on a bank holiday. The only way to establish whether the festivals bring in additional people would be to ban all events on a bank holiday, even if it was for one year only.

The argument is that it’s the only way we will find out whether the festivals bring in extra people.

Such an idea, of course, would not be popular with the festival organisers who will know that Lyme is always packed over a bank holiday and their events benefit from this.

But sometimes I wonder if we have lost site of the fact that at some time we have to draw the line and stop cramming more people into our town which in itself may well start to drive people away.

THE concerns expressed about the advisability and safety of erecting marquees on top of the Marine Parade shelters in Lyme Regis got me thinking about the first time this occurred.

I put my hand up. I was the culprit. It was back in the 1970s when I was secretary of the Regatta & Carnival Committee and we were planning to stage a number of events in the Marine Theatre.

But the running of the theatre had just been handed over to John Rodd, licensee of the White Hart pub at Colyford and a colourful character around the Lyme area.

Much to our annoyance, he didn’t want to host the regatta because he intended to organise his own events and

Those were the days... therefore refused our request.

It put us in a bit of a quandary as there was no other venue close to the seafront, where all regatta events traditionally took place.

At the time I had a girlfriend in London and as a treat I took her to the London Fashion Show which was held in the grounds of the Natural History Museum. It was the first time I had seen free standing marquees, those without a main pole in the middle and guide ropes.

I took the name and tele-

phone number of the company which erected them and contacted them on my return to Lyme.

So I orderered the biggest marquee they could provide which became the headquarters for the regatta week events that year.

Our treasurer at the time was town clerk Harry Williams who gave permission for us to do so. I can’t remember whether he asked for council approval or not. So you see, delegating decisions to officers about the use of the Marine Parade, a bit of a hot potato, at the moment, is nothing new.

The marquee was a great success, although soon after it was erected it poured with rain for a couple of days and we had to concoct some sort of way of diverting the deluge.

We ended up buying some guttering from Bradfords and my as-

sistant secretary Jack Caddy, who had all the difficult and dangerous jobs, had to edge his way along the front of the marquee, standing on top the railings, to erect it.

We held several events in the marquee, ranging from Bernard Glover and His Organ, which we had to manually lift onto the top of the shelters, and a disco at which Radio One DJ “Diddy” David Hamilton appeared before crowning Miss Lyme Regis the following day.

When he saw how many people were in the marquee he said there was no way he would make his way through the crowd. So Jack and I picked him up under the arms and frogmarched him to the stage, with his girlfriend, model Kathy Mckinnon scurrying behind us.

Plastic free campaign steps forward with thought-provoking exhibition LYME Regis will host a free interactive art installation to raise awareness of the increasing amount of plastic waste found in our oceans.

The ‘Plastic Ocean’ exhibition will be held in the Jubilee Pavilion on Marine Parade between Saturday, June 9 and Friday 15, open daily from 11am to 5pm, and closing at 2pm on the last day.

Eva Fahle-Clouts, a local artist, has been inspired by water, the beauty of it, all of its qualities and the sheer amount of it on this planet, in creating the exhibition and she invites all to “see beyond the surface of water” with this thought-provoking display.

Plastic Free Lyme Regis, a campaign initiated by ecogroup Turn Lyme Green, invited Eva to show her exhibition to support the town’s plans to achieve Surfers Against Sewage accredited plastic free status by the end of 2018.

Eva said: “My installation expresses my environmental concerns and my love for water. I have used photography, poems, text and the plastic I collected at the beach in Lyme Regis as well as old lobster pots.”

On Sunday, June 10 at 2pm the exhibition will be formally launched by Anne Baker, with a talk on her experiences sailing around Britain as part of the ‘RoundBritain2017’ yacht team. The team sampled water all around the British coastline to test how much pollution, including plastic, it contained.

Plastic Free Lyme Regis will also be participating in Eva’s exhibition with an information stand alongside her display. There will also be tips to take away on reducing the plastic that we use and how to be kinder to the environment.

The campaign is a major project affiliated with Turn Lyme Green and supported by Lyme Regis Town Council.

It follows guidelines set out by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches, waves and wildlife.

Lyme Regis aims to gain the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Award by the end of 2018 by reducing the

amount of single-use plastic items used in the town and cleaning up the local coastal environment.

There are five steps necessary to achieve ‘plastic free’ status, as follows: ● Support from the local council, ● Businesses working to reduce the amount of plastic that they use ● The community supporting plastic free living initiatives, such as beach cleans to reduce waste in the environment ● Ongoing support and events to promote the plastic free message.

Fun for all the family at annual village fete

Tractors trundle into Uplyme

FINAL preparations are being made for Uplyme Village Fete, which will be held from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, June 9.

The annual event, to be held on the King George V playing field, will include a number of varied stalls and traditional fete games, including plate smashing, roll a coin, wet sponge throwing, table football and the human one arm bandit.

Sharandys Birds of Prey and Munchkins Miniature Shetland Ponies will be on display, and Punch & Judy shows will keep the youngsters entertained.

A music tent will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon and visitors will be serenaded by classical guitar in the village hall, where cream teas will be served.

Other attractions will include a bouncy castle, carousel roundabout and free train rides on the miniature railway. There will also be a selection of food stalls, and the cricket club bar will be open, as well as the fete’s popular cocktail bar.

Gates open at 1.30pm for the official opening and 2pm and entry costs £2 per person or is free for under 16s.

Funds raised at the fete will go towards next year’s event and local good causes.

MORE than 100 vintage tractors made their way through Lyme Regis and into Uplyme on Bank Holiday Monday. The spectacle formed the finishing leg of the annual Colyton Vintage Tractor Run, which this year finished at Uplyme Village Hall with lunch and refreshments for participants.

The tractors set off from Colyton at 10.30am in the morning and made their way through the East Devon countryside before touring around Lyme Regis and coming down the lanes into Uplyme. The event was this year raising funds for Axminster League of Friends supporting Hospice Care at Home and the RNLI, with representatives from Lyme Regis lifeboat crew greeting participants as they arrived in Uplyme.

School football team finish in third place in national finals THE children from Charmouth Primary School enjoyed an exciting and nerve wracking day at the national football finals.

Playing at Coventry’s Rioch Arena, the children did the school and the area proud.

As Dorset champions in the small schools category, Charmouth went to Bristol for the south west finals and were one of two teams to qualify for the nationals from the nine counties which were represented.

And so, on Saturday, May 20 there were two leagues of four and Charmouth were first off against Cambridgeshire representing the south east. They won the game 2-0 with goals from captain Mattie Loader and from George Chapman.

Next up was the Midlands and having gone a goal down, Charmouth came back to draw with another well-taken goal from George Chapman.

Their league was very tight and going into their last match, Charmouth needed a draw to qualify for the semis and Cheshire, from the North, needed a win to qualify. Inspired by Djibril Cisse's (ex Liverpool) son, the North went into a 1-0 lead and with two minutes to go, Charmouth looked as though they were heading home. However, a well-taken goal by

Theo Whitely along with a fine save by Adam Rowe in the dying seconds meant that Charmouth topped their group which was a fantastic achievement.

In the semi-final against Hampshire, the other team representing the south west, we went behind to an early goal and despite hitting the post and forcing a very good save from their keeper, Charmouth could not find a way back in to the game, exiting to the eventual winners. This ended a 37-match unbeaten run for the school and, at the end, each of the children from Charmouth wished Hampshire well for the final.

Manager Ian Mouland said: “I’d like to thank Rich Tilley, my joint manager, and Ross Travill, my joint manager for the previous four years, for all of their hard work and dedication.

“And I’d like to thank the children and the parents for all of their efforts. We had a fabulous day and one I am sure that the children will remember throughout their lives.

“I am coming to the end of my role and I'd like to thank the school for the chance that we have had of working with the children over the past five years. It has been an absolute privilege for the three of us.”

Crowds turn out for Party in the Park Exhibition of local art for church appeal

RESIDENTS and visitors to Charmouth enjoyed glorious sunshine at the village’s biannual Party in the Park on Sunday evening. Organisers from the Charmouth Events Committee couldn’t have asked for better weather, with families arriving at the Barrs Lane playing field with camping chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the evening’s entertainment. Live music was provided by young, local band Dream Phaser, followed by headliners The IOUs, from Somerset. The party also included a barbecue, plus chilli and curry prepared by The White House, and a bar, topped off with a fireworks display. The second Party in the Park of the year will be held on Sunday, August 26.

SEVEN local artists exhibited their work in St Andrew’s Parish Church in Charmouth over the Bank Holiday weekend to raise for the Changing Spaces project.

The artists (pictured) whose work went on show were Geoff Townson, Ernie Godden, Paddy Sullivan, Russell Coulson, Philip Winstone and Wendy Lowis Bates.

Their work was much admired by dozens of people who attended the exhibition to boost funds, with refreshments also being on sale, for the project to convert the church into a meeting place for wider community use.

The church has already been granted £370,000 from the Diocese and are working hard on securing a significant Lottery grant to complete the work.

Disappointed no local ‘Hello, Dolly!’ show was traders at food festival special for many reasons ■ I WENT to the food festival yesterday (Saturday), but was very disappointed that Lyme Regis council allowed a company that brought outside traders to do this, rather than local businesses.

It is well known that Lyme Regis high street struggles and takes less when there are events on the seafront and this would have been a perfect opportunity to support the local businesses.

This was blatantly obvious by the lack of people in the main shopping area and chatting with people who have businesses in town, who expressed that they were having a quiet day.

Lyme Regis has a wonderful wealth of great eating places.

Surely it would have been better to support them rather than bring in other non-local businesses. It is really not sustainable and not supporting of the local food movement.

This area has a massive wealth of producers and eateries and it would have been a perfect opportunity for them.

I think it is appalling that the council did this to them and I made a point of not eating or drinking at the food festival, but

did enjoy the local busking festival.

I am very disappointed and sad for the lack of support for businesses in Lyme from the town council. I am sure, and in fact I know, that one local business person would have arranged the whole food festival in return for having a stall, and they would have still had revenue from local businesses paying to have a stall.

Yet another amazing missed opportunity from the town council.

Also there is no park and ride in Sidmouth Road, which is very unsupportive of local businesses again this year. I really do think the school could profit from running one from the school grounds in holidays and earn some muchneeded revenue too.

■ MY husband and I enjoyed a very special performance of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ from Lyme Regis Musical Theatre at the Woodmead Halls in May. It was special for several reasons.

As it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2020/2021 the group has evolved with the years as things change, but still has the core of local family names in each production using their particular skills and talents.

Now we see the wider community of our area joining together as each production, under excellent direction, becomes more professional and is supported by audiences from the wider area too, and those who joined as children are now adult performers.

The Woodmead Halls offered a splendid venue with excellent acoustic and vision of the wider stage.

Above all, for we older folk, very easy and good parking. And many of us are older and are only able to come if we have easy parking.

On a personal note the ice creams were delicious and the bar easily accessible. We are so fortunate in our small town to have two such venues, and we have in our theatre, too, a vital and buzzing place with amazing talent performing most nights and adapting to the needs of the community as they arise. For instance showing films which our cinema would normally have.

We must not forget too the amazing music from the church, again serving a wider and different audience.

We are only 3,500 approx. in population, we are so lucky to have all this and need to support what we have. Time passes and though change is sometimes hard to get used to, it quickly becomes part of life. For these reasons we thank all of those involved in the performance we saw, special for so many reasons.

Pedestrian crossing proposal ‘absurd’ ■ THE decision to place a pedestrian crossing in Broad Street is absurd.

Firstly, the drastic loss of shoppers’ parking spaces, and I am amazed that business owners haven't created more of a furore about it.

Secondly, it will create more congestion especially in summer.

Thirdly, who will bother to walk up or down the street to use it when Broad Street is narrow enough to go across with a break in the traffic?

Fourthly, how on Earth have we survived so long in the town without a crossing?

Fifthly, it is unnecessary expense. If there is money in the budget it would be far better spent on a professional survey of the town's overall traffic problem.

LYME REGIS TOWN COUNCIL Working hard to ensure we get it right OVERFLOWING bins and the litter-strewn seafront came under the spotlight over the early-May bank holiday weekend.

Hands up – both the town council and Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) were caught out and hadn’t put in place the necessary resources to deal with the extra waste.

The council was under pressure to make sure there was no repeat of this over the Spring bank holiday, and with three major events taking place in the town at the same time, we had our work cut out.

Jazz Jurassica, B Sharp’s Busking Festival and the Dorset Street Food Festival, together with the hot weather and school holidays, meant it was probably the busiest weekend of the year so far.

We met with the organisers of the jazz and street food festivals, joined by the police and fire and rescue service, and fine-tuned plans for the weekend, discussing everything from vehicle movements and security, to waste management and first aid.

We drafted in staff to work extra hours, allowing us to provide cleaning, waste management, and enforcement cover between 6am and 10pm for the whole weekend.

Several members of staff went above and beyond the call of duty and deserve the council’s thanks – they know who they are.

We bought two extra-large rubbish bins to store excess waste, the street food festival had hired dozens of extra bins to cope with demand, and Dorset Waste Partnership’s operatives had switched to summer hours.

A lot of work went on behind the scenes in the run-up to and during the long weekend and on reflection, we think things worked pretty well. To the thousands of people who descended on Lyme Regis, we hope the town came across as well-organised and efficient.

The challenge now is to make sure we keep up the good work and don’t let things slip for the rest of the season and into the future.

Early starts to keep beach clean and tidy

IF you’ve ever taken an early morning walk along the seafront, you would have seen the freshly-raked sand and may take great pleasure in making the first footprints of the day.

During the spring and summer, our external works’ team is out bright and early in the mornings getting the town ready for the day ahead.

The tractor is out several times a week to comb the beach and remove debris, the cleansing operative is litter-picking and emptying bins from the crack of dawn, the seafront attendant is making the parade look presentable, the gardeners have an early start to water the hanging baskets, and enforcement officers work an early shift to patrol the car parks and check people are abiding by local dog controls.

There are times when we get caught out and there’s more rubbish than we expected or someone on the early morning shift has called in sick, but for the most part, these jobs take

place day in, day out.

Let’s not focus on the odd occasion when things don’t go according to plan, but the many days when things do.

Our beach is for everyone!

WE believe our beautiful sandy beach should be available for everyone to enjoy.

That’s why we bought two beach wheelchairs last year, making the sand and shore accessible to everyone.

The all-terrain wheelchairs can be hired for free by anyone who has difficulty getting onto the beach and there are two different types to suit various needs.

When we bought the wheelchairs last year, two local residents – Oli Apps, then aged seven (pictured), and Vicci Stocqueler, then aged 49 – were the first to try them out.

Each of them had very different needs – Oli has been in specialist buggies or a wheelchair since he was born, while Vicci can walk a little but has limited mobility.

We took them down to the shore and the pleasure they got from the experience was worth every penny of the £6,000 the council spent on the wheelchairs.

Although there’s not much the council can do about the hills in the town or the old buildings with steps and narrow entrances, where possible, the council is aiming to make Lyme more accessible to people with disabilities and impairments.

We have recently installed signs showing the step-free route from the top of town at the Langmoor Garden gates to the seafront, and the reverse route.

The route may be 550 metres long, but the fabulous views help to make it less onerous.

vance through the tourist information centre and collected from the Jubilee Pavilion information point on the seafront.

They can also be hired on the day if they have not been pre-booked.

Disappointment over park and ride WE finally had the news late last week that planning permission had been refused for the Sidmouth Road park and ride.

It’s disappointing, although not entirely unexpected, and we remain committed to finding a real solution to the town’s wider traffic and parking problems.

On a positive note, Charmouth Road park and ride is proving to be a huge success, with almost 2,600 passengers using the service

over the early-May bank holiday weekend.

Given the high demand on the service, the council has decided to run the park and ride every weekend in June.

This, of course, comes at a cost to the council. If the weather is bad or there are no major events to attract visitors, demand on the service may drop off, but that’s a risk the council is willing to take in the best interests of the town.

WE’RE aware there have been some problems with the beach showers recently, but we are trialling a few solutions to resolve the issues.

Although the showers are specially made for a beach environment, sand is causing the buttons to stick, resulting in either constantlyflowing water or no running water at all.

New buttons were made by the suppliers last year and improved the situation, but now the showers have been turned back on for the main season, the problem has returned.

We think a more regular programme of maintenance to clear out the sand will help and we’re trying out a new silicone cover over the buttons.

Seasiders celebrate successful season

LYME Regis Football Club celebrated another successful season at its annual presentation night last Saturday.

Making the most of its improved facilities, the club opted to host the event at its own clubhouse this year, with about 80 guests enjoying a sumptuous three-course dinner in a marquee on the pitch, prepared by Fossil Food Catering in the club’s new kitchen extension.

Speeches were made by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, who congratulated the Seasiders on their season’s successes, club chairman Howard Larcombe; Richard White, secretary of the Perry Street League; and retired referee Bob Hall.

Trophies were then presented, with minutes secretary and fundraiser Francesca Evans receiving the Jack Loveridge Trophy for Clubperson of the Year, presented by life-member Les Loveridge.

Cody Bowditch received the Young Player of the Year award and Steve Batey, who was heading up the kitchen staff preparing the dinner, was named Top Scorer.

Other awards were as follows: First Team Manager’s Player - Kingsley Wellman; First Team Players’ Player - Fred Parsons; Reserves Manager’s Player - Will Meech; Reserves Players’ Player - Jake Bearpark; Rovers Manager’s Player - Matt Preece; Rovers Players’ Player - Darius Pickering.

Bouquets of flowers were also presented to special guests, including the mayor, Ruth Sommerville representing Tesco Express in Lyme Regis, which regularly donates food to the club, and Louise White from the Perry Street League, as well as club committee members and helpers - Heather Larcombe, Andrea Budden, Nicky Levan, Francesca Evans, Jackie Evans, Fiona Blackmore, Patsy Neale and Lin Paterson.

LYME JOINS THE NATION IN CELEBRATING THE WEDDING OF THE YEAR LYME Regis joined the nation in celebrating the much-anticipated royal wedding on Saturday, May 19.

Events were held across the town with live screenings of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Lyme Regis Football Club combined its royal wedding party with FA Cup Final celebrations, with screenings of both events on the big screen TVs at the Davey Fort clubhouse, as well as a mini beer festival, Pimm’s and prosecco to toast the happy couple, an all-day barbecue and other attractions.

The Seasiders had plenty to celebrate on the day, finishing their season with a 4-2 win over Wellington Reserves during the festivities, claiming them third place in Devon & Exeter Division 1 with hopes of promotion.

The event raised £2,000 for the football club, which is currently raising funds to further improve facilities by building a grandstand for its supporters.

Celebrations were also held at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis, where guests were encouraged to dress in wedding attire. The Marine had been decked out in bunting, flags and flowers on the table, with guests enjoying cucumber sandwiches and homemade cakes as they watched Harry and Meghan say their ‘I Dos’ at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Theatre director Gabby Rabbitts said she was “delighted with the community event”, with the guests applauding, singing and even shedding a tear during the romantic event.

She went on to praise her team, commenting: “The theatre staff and volunteers have worked incredibly hard to make today happen. Many arrived at the theatre at 7.30am this morning to make sure everything went perfectly.

“Without their hard work and commitment, today couldn’t have been possible.”

A live screening event of the wedding was also held in Peek Chapel next to the Alexandra Hotel, and the Talbot Arms in Uplyme held a royal wedding party with guests bringing their own food to share.

The ceremony took place at St Michael’s Parish Church, followed by a reception at Lyme Regis Golf Club. The couple live and work in Plymouth and will be enjoying a honeymoon in Mauritius.

A Bank Holiday brimming with music

MUSIC filled the streets of Lyme Regis over the Bank Holiday weekend, as performers of all ages and genres took part in Jazz Jurassica and B Sharp’s Busking Festival.

Jazz Jurassica - the new name for Lyme’s annual jazz and blues festival - was held from Thursday to Monday, with headline acts performing at the Marine Theatre, including Georgie Fame, the Fliss Gorst Band, the James Taylor Quarter and the Liane Carroll Trio.

Free musical performances were held on Marine Parade throughout the weekend, with crowds dancing on the seafront to the varied programme.

Events were also held in the gardens of the Mariners Hotel and at new seafront restaurant SWIM, where the weekend was topped off on Monday evening with Slinky Machine’s ‘Guestival’ with surprise guest, R&B and soul star Kieran Alleyne, a former X Factor finalist who is about to set off on his world tour.

Julie Sheppard, Jazz Jurassica organiser, said: “The sun shone, the bands played and the audiences partied hard - that's how we'll remember this year's Jazz Jurassica. Our performers spanned both musical genres and the generations. From funk to gypsy jazz, from swing to soul, from jazz reggae to R&B. “We were proud to host the fabulous Georgie Fame, still going strong at 75, after a musical career spanning decades. And Kieran Alleyne, 23, the young R&B, soul star and former X Factor finalist, just starting out on his solo career and first world tour.

“The breadth of music continues to attract new audiences to the festival and perhaps convinces those who say ‘we don't like jazz’ to come along and give it a try.

“The headline acts at Marine Theatre exceeded our expectations - there's something about the Marine which seems to bring out the best in performers and audiences alike.

“Liane Carroll who played the festival finale delivered a stunning performance there which had the audience laughing one minute and crying the next - it was one of the most remarkable performances we'd ever seen at the festival.

“We'd like to thank everyone who performed and helped. And Lyme Regis Town Council and their staff who worked so hard over the weekend to keep everything looking so spic and span despite the crowds. We were truly blessed by the good weather fairy too.

“Finally, thank you to everyone who came to listen, watch and enjoy themselves - without your support it wouldn't mean a thing.”

Youth music charity B Sharp added to the entertainment on Saturday with its annual Busking Festival, which saw enthusiasts of all ages and abilities taking to the mic and trying out the ‘Play Me Piano’ and ‘Play Me Drums’.

Entertainment varied from young bands and singer-songwriters, drummers and saxophonists to a school choir, pianists, music producers and even beat boxers.

B Sharp’s music leaders and young trainees were on hand to support and jam with them, as well as offer the technical support needed.

To help with the cost of running B Sharp’s ongoing music programme for young people over the whole year, buskers happily donated 40 per cent of their collection to the charity and many donated all their takings.

Guitars On The Beach to showcase young talent THE record-breaking Guitars On The Beach returns to Lyme Regis on Saturday, June 16, when local young talent will take centre stage.

This year, there will be three new, teenage members of the GOTB House Band -Ella Foxhall [vocals], Jake Causley [sax] and Tyler Street [guitar] - which will be leading crowds in an attempt to break the record for Britain’s Biggest Band, set at the event in 2014 when thousands played along with Deep Purple’s frontman Ian Gillan to ‘Smoke On The Water’.

Lyme’s new, young band Dream Phaser will also take to the stage at this month’s event, and young Chard-based band The IOUs will be headlining.

Music on the beach stage will start at 10am, with colourful town councillor Jeff Scowen acting as MC for the day. The programme includes at least 11 bands, mostly from the local area, performing a variety of pop, rock, reggae, ska, blues, folk and jazz.

The line-up also includes Delta Tango 7, Funkin’ Skunks, The G Men, Grace Gillan & Jake Miller, Hot Sausage, The Little Streets, Perfect Strangers and Slinky Machine.

The record attempt will be at 4pm when the crowd will be invited to play along with the GOTB House Band to a set dedicated to legendary guitarists who died last year, including Chuck Berry, Glen Campbell, AC/DC’s Malcolm

Young and Tom Petty.

Songs that will be performed are: ‘Free Fallin’’ [Petty], ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ [Young], ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ [Campbell], ‘You Never Can Tell’ [Berry], along with nods to the late Joe Strummer of The Clash [‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’], the late Rory Gallagher, who would have been 70 this year, [‘Bullfrog Blues’], Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and John Mellencamp’s ‘Small Town’.

The play along session will climax with GOTB’s signature tune, Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’, which was first released 60 years ago this year.

Busy weekend at Lyme’s historic Town Mill THE Town Mill in Lyme Regis recently hosted a weekend packed with live music, baking, art and craft activities to celebration National Mills Weekend.

As well as biscuit-making, live music from local bands HiDDeN and The Natterjax, open art studios and the regular tours of the working water mill, the MillFest celebrations also coincided with the completion of the latest restoration project at the historic attraction, the recommissioning of a set of French burr stones.

Having a second set of millstones in operation will mean the mill can improve its flour production process to meet the ever-increasing demand for Town Mill Flour, and millers can demonstrate an interesting additional historic milling process to visitors.

Join Uplyme Morris for day of seafront dancing

UPLYME Morris will host the first Lyme Regis Day of Morris Dancing on Saturday, June 9.

The event will include a whole day of displays by the popular Uplyme Morris, as well as visiting sides, musicians and schoolchildren starting at 11am on the seafront, topped off with a beach barbecue.

Annual general meetings ■ LYME Regis Development Trust will host its annual general meeting on Thursday, June 7 and all are welcome to attend.

The meeting will take place at The Hub on Church Street, starting at 7pm, and an update on the trust’s work over the past year will be given.

■ LYME Regis Football Club will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday, June 5.

The meeting will be held at the Davey Fort clubhouse on Charmouth Road, starting at 7.30pm, where chairman Howard Larcombe will give a report on the year, club accounts will be presented and committee members and officers elected.

Management teams for the cub’s three senior teams is also expected to be discussed.

Rotary clubs host annual golf day

THE 12th annual charity golf day organised joining by the Rotary Clubs of Axminster and Lyme Regis was deemed a resounding success.

The event was held on Wednesday, May 10 at Lyme Regis Golf Club, with 100 competitors from all over Dorset, Devon and Somerset taking part.

The president of the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis, Les Baker, commented: “Thanks to our sponsors this event maintains its appeal. Without them it would not have been the success it is.

“This year we are donating half of the proceeds to two splendid charities, namely the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and the Devon Air Ambulance.

The remainder will be distributed to other Lyme Regis and Axminster local charities and organisations.

“We sincerely appreciate the support of our main sponsor Axminster Recycling Shop and of the host of other companies, local organisations and people whose support through sponsorship, raffle prizes or silent auction prizes helped make this event the success it is.”

The format was Stableford, with 23 teams each of four golfers and excellent prizes awarded to those with the highest joint scores.

A team headed up by Lyme Regis Rotary stalwart Jim Moseley with Douglas Moseley, Neil and Sarah Hampton-Rumbold took first prize with 91 points.

Mr Baker added: “The Rotary Clubs of Lyme Regis and Axminster would like to thank the Lyme Regis Golf Club for the huge assistance they gave us in running the event on their excellent golf course.

“As usual they did a great job for us, many of those who played have come year after year and remarked, yet again, on how well the course was prepared and what a great reception they had been given.”

Prizes handed out at art exhibition LYME Regis Art Society opened its annual exhibition with a preview evening and prizegiving last Friday.

Hosted at the Malthouse Gallery at the Town Mill, the annual exhibition gives members the chance to show off their work from the year.

Chairman Sue Wells welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Steve Miller, who officially opened the exhibition, accompanied by his wife Heather.

Councillor Miller commented on how impressed he had been by the overall standard of the work on display, and that he hoped the town would continue to encourage all local talent.

This year, just three prizes were up for grabs, but judge Barbara Green said members had given her a very difficult task.

Before going through a list of paintings that she felt could easily have been winners, Barbara said that 50 different judges would have come up with 50 different titles and that judging was always a matter of one person’s personal opinion.

Barbara mentioned about 12 pieces of work, explaining what it was that attracted her to each of them, but finally announced the over-

all winner to be Robert Hinton with his unusual and very striking work entitled ‘Totems’.

Second prize went to Moya Paul for her depiction of ‘Jurassic Cliffs’ and third to Anne Cator for her beautiful image called ‘Autumn Glow over Lewesdon Hill’.

Mrs Wells then gave a vote of thanks to Phil Clayton, artistic director of the Malthouse, who had personally organised and hung all of the 103 paintings, and to Denise Powell who helped him.

Society secretary Sheila Stratton was also thanked for all her hard work on behalf of all members.

With formalities over, guests and artists were able to enjoy wine and nibbles whilst appreciating the varied and exiting pieces of art around them.

The society now looks forward to exhibiting on Marine Parade as part of Lifeboat Week, on July 28 and 29. Regular meetings will resume in the Woodmead Halls in September.

A memorable day on Portreath beach

HOW many people have taken a phone call from Cornwall asking if they wanted to photograph heavy horses taking a swim in the Atlantic Ocean? That was the beginning of a fantastic morning in Portreath.

The horses were from Harry Gotts Shire Horse farm and carriage museum in Treskillard. I immediately said yes and met them on the beach at Portreath.

The bonus was the light and the huge waves rolling in behind the horses.

The bravest of the horses was High Point William, a massive Suffolk Punch stallion, and not just any old stallion; he is the most fertile stallion in the country with 100 per cent record of covering mares, he has fathered over 40 foals.

Photographing those wonderful horses with that amazing backdrop of the ocean was memorable to say the least.

At one point, William broke free from his minder and could have galloped for two miles along the beach. He didn’t, he just rolled in the sand.

Fantastic memories of a great occasion.

IN our regular series commemorating the 100th anniversaries of the deaths of all men from Lyme Regis and the surrounding area who died in the First World War, this week we remember Frederick Alfred Gale and Frederick Hodges.

Lance Bombardier, 120th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery Service No. 60108 Born 1882 in Bridport and died June 6 1918 in Pas de Calais, France Frederick Gale married Marian Bisson in Jersey on Christmas Day 1914 and arrived in France with 120th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, on July 14 1916.

Frederick died of wounds. The son of Frederick and Elizabeth Anna Gale, of Eveleigh Cottage, Uplyme, and husband of Marian Gale (nee Bisson) of 3 South View, Chertsey Lane, Staines, he is buried in Bacdu-Sud British Cemetery, Baileulville, France, grave I.E.27 and is commemorated on the Uplyme war memorial as well on the Jersey Roll of Honour.

FREDERICK HODGES Company Sergeant Major, 4th Battalion, Canadian Medical Corps Service No. 63422

Born June 8 1888 in Lyme Regis and died October 11 1918 in Quebec, Canada A groom by trade, Frederick served in the 1st Dorset Garrison Artillery Volunteers in Lyme Regis before emigrating to Canada.

He emigrated on May 29 1912 from Bristol; aboard SS Royal Edward for Quebec with his brother Charles. With the outbreak of war he enlisted at Quebec on November 14 1914.

He was the son of Charles Hodges, of Stratfield Saye, Reading, Berkshire, and the late Harriet Hodges, formerly of Lyme Regis, and husband of Ada Hodges, of Grand Mere, Quebec, Canada.

He died of influenza and is buried in Quebec City (Mount Hermon) Cemetery. He is commemorated in the Canadian First World War Book of Remembrance, page 430.

Youth regatta at sailing club A FINE sunny day, flat sea and light northerly breeze made encouraging conditions for Lyme Regis Sailing Club’s Youth Regatta, though a little disappointing for the more experienced who prefer stronger winds.

The Youth Regatta was brought into the club programme recently

by Cameron Moss, now assistant sailing secretary and a keen RS 800 sailor, who has helped coach younger members to sail the P course over previous weeks.

A range of 14 classes from Optimists to the RS 800, mostly single handers crewed by a total of 37 young sailors, took part in two fleets, Silver and Gold, all racing on handicap. There were visitors from Axe YC. The first three in the Silver Fleet were separated by 12 seconds only in race one, the two leaders in the Gold by one minute in an hour of racing.

Race Officer Jerry Rook made every effort to include all, and 27 completed race one while fading breezes and increasing tidal effects made it harder for the slower dinghies. Sixteen made the distance competed in race two.

Racing was followed by a BBQ and prize giving, with club engraved keepers’ trophies and CoastWaterSports vouchers for the winners, presented by the Commodore’s wife, Pauline Rook.

Cameron thanked the race officer and team, organisers and chefs on behalf of the sailors and families who spectated.

YME Regis Gig Club is looking to have its best year yet in the fiercely contested series of regattas that are being staged in the beautiful coastal towns and villages across the South West over the coming summer months and culminating at the Championships in Newquay in September.

That old Lyme spirit rekindled as Reserves win penalty shoot-out CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 Batey and Wallace Blackmore in superb form against a very lively Elmore attack.

Lyme thought they had a good case for a penalty when Rowe was wrestled to the ground in another dangerous attack but the referee was having none of it.

It was stalemate after 90 minutes and it was clear a number of Lyme players were suffering from cramp from their efforts on one of the biggest pitches in Devon football.

But they came out of the traps with renewed vigour and took the lead just four minutes into the first half of extra time when Jake Bearpark poked the ball home in a goalmouth scramble.

Elmore were not going to lay down and they hit back with an equaliser within minutes.

Rowe, who was much more effective in the second half, was causing the Elmore defence all sorts of problems, shooting wide from close

range and forcing the Elmore keeper into another diving save.

Elmore pressed hard for the winner, full of running, but they found Meech in sparkling form and a resolute defence in which Batey and Blackmore were impregnable.

The Seasiders looked pretty well spent when the final whistle of extra time signalled the penalty shoot out. Steve Batey, Bradley Rowe, Jake Bearpark and Cam Fowler all converted their spot kicks with ease before an Elmore player missed, leaving Wallace Blackmore the pressure of taking their last penalty to retain the cup which Lyme won for a first time last season.

Blackmore did not falter, cooly slamming the ball home to win the man-of-the-match award.

This was a gutsy, brave performance by the Reserves, a real team effort with a spirit Lyme show so often in these big matches.

Lyme’s crews are working to build on the rankings gained at the World Championships at the beginning of May when 158 gigs fought hard for the Men’s and Women’s trophies. The racing in the Isles of Scilly saw Lyme Regis three men’s crews in the first 40 gigs across the line and the Men’s A Crew coming a good 22nd. The Ladies A Crew came 67th against challenging competition especially our local rivals Bridport Gig Club, who performed well and are going to be hard to beat.

Lyme Regis Gig Club is a charity launched in 2007 to offer local people the opportunity to participate in Cornish Pilot Gig Racing as a way of having fun at sea, to keep fit, to be part of a team, gain confidence, learn seamanship skills, and to compete in the regions fastest growing sport.

Sea rowing is also a great way of building fitness, stamina and as a non-impact, aerobic sport makes for a good all body work out that burns the calories and reduces weight. The Club also has a gym where we run dry land training sessions out of season and when sea rowing is cancelled.

The town’s Gig Club offers rowing programmes for all those who like a physical and mental challenge and want to push themselves a little or a lot. We are delighted to be running a regular column in LymeOnline to keep you posted on events and results over the summer.

UPLYME & Lyme Regis 1st X1 won their first game of the 2018 cricket season in the Devon League at the King George V playing field on Saturday with stumps being drawn before 6pm.

Uplyme won the toss and elected to field, bowling out North Devon for 124 runs.

Pick of the bowlers was Ewan Peddar, who took 3-17 off just four overs. Tyler Wellman also claimed three wickets at a cost of 20 runs.

Opener Jedd Whittington gave Uplyme a good start with a swashbuckling 44, including three sixes and six fours.

Uplyme then lost five quick wickets with just six runs being added before Laurie Thomas and Charlie Moss came together to see Uplyme through on 126-5 in 27.3 overs.

Moss carried his bat for 38 and Thomas finished on 25 not out.

● UPLYME & Lyme Regis 1st X1 had a hot afternoon in the sun when they travelled to Heathcoat in Tiverton where the home team, batting first, ran up a massive 336-6 off their allotted 40 overs.

In a difficult afternoon for the bowlers, the best figures for Uplyme were returned for Tyler Wellman (2-58).

In reply, Uplyme were 195-7 when stumps were drawn with James Whetlor top scoring on 49.

ON the 25th occasion competing for the Centenary Sword at Lyme Regis Golf Club, it was fitting that it was a very close finish as both Barry Ebdon and Tony Johnstone both scored 43 points.

With each scoring 23 points on the front nine and 20 on the back, it came down to truly tight finish as Ebdon just emerged the worthy winner.

Both players had memorable holes, each scoring a four-point hole with a number of threepointers.

spectacular third.

The Ladies Ping 4BBB competition also saw high scores as Judith Ellard and Sarah Kilcoyne had a dream start as they took 12 points from the first three holes on their way to a staggering 46 points.

With this winning score it may see them go forward to play in the national final in Lincolnshire.

Melissa McMahon and Jenny Scott started well and continued playing in the same vein as they were consistently steady on all holes to finish with a highly respectable 45 points.

Julie Duke and Debbie Shinners came third with a good score of 40 points.

Uplyme used seven bowlers with Sam Sims (2 for 16 off 5) and Jason Maltby (2-21 off 5) the most successful. Gabriel Maltby also bowled tightly, conceding just 14 runs from his seven overs for the loss of one wicket.

In reply, Uplyme lost three quick wickets before brothers Gabriel and Jason Maltby steadied the ship. Gabriel put up gritty

opposition, carrying his bat for 64, while Jason weighed in with 18 useful runs.

But the tail failed to wag and Uplyme were all out for 160, just four runs short of victory with just four balls left to bowl. ● THE Rattenbury family are synonymous with Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club.

Brian Rattenbury is president of the club and still turns out occasionally for the 1st X1.

His younger brother Stuart was a good all-rounder for the club for many years and his elder brother Steve also turned his arm in past years, as well as umpiring.

Youngest brother Simon is following in the family tradition, having taken four wickets on three successive occasions for the

2nd X1 this season.

And now another Rattenbury is making his mark. Simon’s son, 14-year-old Jack, was star man in the 2nds X1’s defeat at Exmouth 2nd X1 last Saturday, taking two smart catches and claiming four victims for the loss of 30 runs off eight overs.

Uplyme won the toss and elected to bat. Eddie Clarke (28) and Jerry Sims (35) gave them a good start and Neil Price weighed in with 30 useful runs in a score of 147-6 off their allotted 40 overs.

The highest score of the innings came from extras at 44.

Uplyme bowled well with Gabriel Maltby sharing honours with young Rattenbury, taking 316 off six overs.

Not one boundary was scored during the game.

Lyme men topple strongest team in league

PRIDE of place at Lyme Regis Bowls Club this week goes to the men from Lyme 2 who managed a terrific 8-2 win against, arguably, the strongest team in the 1st division, Bridport.

On the other hand, Lyme 1 lost all 10 points away to Wellworthy and were glad the match was rained off at 15 ends.

The ladies only managed three points away to Bridport, Nola Stephen’s rink having a real stinker. They fared much better in the Top Club competition at Sherborne, winning by 82-71.

Only one frendly, against Honiton, this time last week’s loss to them was reversed.

played in very warm and humid conditions.

Sadly, only 18 members made themselves available on the day for what was a very enjoyable event.

The eventual winners were: Jasmine Bishop, Pauline Knight and Jim Moseley on plus 22, well ahead of their nearest rivals. The trophy was presented to the winners by president Pat Cole.

Seasiders end the season with promotion hopes and a trophy LYME Regis Football Club crowned a successful season on Wednesday evening when the first team lifted the Grandisson Cup for the very first time.

The trophy was first played for 60 years ago and this was the first time it had been won by a Dorset-based side with the Seasiders now playing in the Devon & Exeter League.

It maintained Lyme’s magnificent record in cup football, the club having won 17 trophies in the last ten years.

They also lost their management trio of Robin Townsend, Mark Lock and Steve Crabb in the New Year when Lyme’s chances of promotion to the Premier Division looked unlikely.

over as caretaker manager, assisted by club ecretary Rob Thom, the team spirit improved immensley and the First Team went 12 games with only one defeat to finish in third place in Division One and a possible promotion place.

Lyme now has an axious wait to see if the league management committee will pass its ground as being suitable for premier football. If it is, this will be the highest standard in which Lyme has ever played in during its 133 years of history.

Having beaten Heavitree United twice in the league, Lyme started Wednesday’s final as favourites, but the Exeter side gave a good account of themselves and at one time looked capable of pulling off a shock result.

There was little between the two sides in the opening exchanges but Lyme’s attractive one-touch passing game, with Mark Bailey and Robbie Fellingham bossing in it midfield, the Seasiders started to dominate proceedings.

Up front, youngster Bradley Rowe was making a nuisance of himself and semi-final hat-trick hero Ben Vine was causing all sorts of trouble when he ran at the Heavitree defence.

The two combined in the 24th minute to give Lyme a 1-0 lead when a dangerous curling cross from the

left flank from Vine was steered home from close range by Rowe.

Lyme sat back a bit after taking this advantage and Heavitree quickened their pace to force themselves back in the game. Captain Harry Slack found himself unmarked on the far post and made no mistake with a strong header

But Lyme held firm to the interval and after the break regained the initiative with their defence standing firm.

Gutsy Reserves end season on a high LYME Regis Reserves finished their season on a high note when they retained the Football Express Cup in a penalty shoot-out, writes Philip Evans.

The Seasiders faced Devon & Exeter Division 5 champions Elmore 2nds in the final at Budleigh Salterton FC .

With Lyme finishing in fourth place in the same division, the Devon side were clear favourites to snatch the trophy from the Seasiders’, although the Ressies did beat them at home in the league.

There ws very little between the two sides in 120 minutes of fierce competition which saw the referee hand out nine yellow cards in all – five to Lyme players and four to Elmore.

There were chances at both ends in a lack-lustre first half in which Steven Batey and Alistair Rattenbury both picked up cautions for dangerous tackles which prompted scuffles between the players as the referee struggled to keep the peace.

Pace quickened

Lyme’s best scoring chance came in the 40th minutes when, after some good work by Jake Bearpark beating several defenders, the ball was scrambled clear to deny the Seasiders the chance of going in at half-time with a 1-0 lead.

The pace quickened considerably after the break with skipper Alex Rowe’s rasping drive from 25 yards forcing the Elmore keeper to pull off a spec-

tacular diving save.

Not long after it was Lyme keeper Will Meech’s turn to impress the crowd when he dived full length to turn a 25-yard free kick from Elmore around the post.

Front-runner Bradley Rowe exacted another impressive save from the Elmore glove man with a rasping drive and the best scoring chance of the half fell to the industrious Ryan Turner whose unchallenged header from a fine Fred Thomson cross flashed across the goalmouth Lyme weathered a period of unabated pressure as the second half wore on with centre backs Mark

Chris Herbst at left full-back was particulatly impressive in dealing with a livewire winger and his fellow defenders, skipper Dominic Rowe and centre backs Kingsley Wellman and the ever reliable Gary Knight were uncompromising in the tackle.

Rowe suffered a nasty cut in a clash of heads and had to be treated off the pitch, returning with a bandaged head, aka Terry Butcher.

The winner came in the 82nd minute when Lyme’s Spanish signing Ruben Rogel latched onto a superb through ball from Ben Vine to snatch the winner from close range.

In true continental style, Rogel celebrated by taking off his shirt and twirling it around is head and got a red card for his trouble.

The league’s referee secretary Terry Atkins was given the unenviable task of choosing the man of the match and he plumped for Ben Vine who always looked dangerous with the ball at his feet. A close second must have been Chris Herbst for his valiant efforts in defence.

And so another season draws to a close, a little later than usual because of the weather, but the Lyme faithful, who yet again turned out in great numbers to follow their side at this final, have been treated to a real roller-coaster.

Fingers crossed that next year the Seasiders will be playing premier football with local derbies against Seaton and Beer.

It is expected that successful Reserve team manager and the club’s vice-chairman, Gerard Hitchcock, will be managing then first team next season.
