Jobs lost at historic Axminster Carpets THE historic Axminster Carpets has collapsed into administration, with almost all staff made redundant.

After weeks trying to secure a rescue deal, the 265-year-old company called in Duff & Phelps as administrators on Wednesday.

Its underlay-manufacturing division, Axfelt, and shop has been sold to rival companies, but it has not found a backer for the main carpet-making business.

Most of the 90 remaining staff have now been made redundant, with just a handful remaining to fulfil the company’s existing orders.

Dogs in cemetery causing concern

REGULATIONS surrounding dogs on Lyme Regis beaches has become one of the most contentious local issues of recent years, but concerns have now been raised about dogs in the cemetery.

Recent incidents of dogs fouling on or around graves in the cemetery have been described as “vile” and “disgusting”, with one resident calling for the town council to take action.

The Cobb was battered by huge waves, high winds and heavy rain as Storm Dennis struck last weekend, but that didn’t put everyone off.

New rector to take up position next week A NEW team rector for the 12 Golden Cap parishes, which include Lyme Regis and Charmouth, will shortly take up his position.

The post has been vacant for well over a year since the Reverend Stephen Skinner retired, and it was announced in November last year that the Reverend Chris Martin (pictured) would be his successor.

The Bishop of Sherborne, the Right Reverend Karen Gorham, will be conducting a special licensing service at St Andrew’s Church in Charmouth on Monday, February 24 at 7pm, when the Reverend Martin will officially take up his post.

The service will be attended by church leaders from across the Salisbury Diocese, together with representatives of local councils, schools and many other organisations. The Golden Cap Team has also said that anyone in the area is welcome to attend.

The Reverend Martin and his wife Tina will live in Charmouth, together with their labrador puppy Welly. They also have three grown up daughters.

The couple are moving from East Devon where the Reverend Martin has been vicar of four rural parishes since 2012.

He said: “We are very much looking forward to taking up residence in this beautiful part of the world and have a strong sense that this is the right place for us to be for this next chapter of our lives and we look forward to finding out exactly why.”

The Reverend Martin originally worked as a chartered accountant for six years and then spent another nine years in financial training be-

fore being ordained in 2009.

He also admits to being a passionate Welshman and, as a result, says that a love of rugby union, singing and real ale appear to flow in his bloodstream.

He added: “I won’t be coming with ‘solutions’. I’ve no real idea what church will look like in 20 years time or how we will get there.

But change is obviously necessary and, as any good pilgrim knows, the journey is more important than the destination.

“I’m glad to be walking that journey and look forward to walking it with you too.”

The position of vicar at St Michael’s Parish Church in Lyme Regis has also been vacant for well over a year, as the Reverend Jane Skinner took up a position with a new benefice in North Devon at the same time as her husband’s retirement.

The Reverend Martin will now oversee the appointment of a vicar for St Michael’s.

Forget dogs on beaches - cemetery is a ‘bigger concern’, says resident REGULATIONS surrounding dogs on Lyme Regis beaches has become one of the most contentious local issues of recent years, but one member of the public said she was more concerned about dogs in the cemetery at this week’s council meeting.

Speaking in the public forum at Wednesday night’s meeting, King’s Way resident Diana Hunt said recent incidents of dogs fouling on or around graves in the cemetery were “vile” and “disgusting”.

She commented: “If you’re there early in the morning, honestly it looks like Crufts. This is a burial ground and it’s no place for dogs.

“Please spare a thought for mourners, undertakers and council workers who cut the grass.”

Mrs Hunt also expressed concerns about dog faeces in St Michael’s churchyard and the war memorial park in George’s Square, known locally as Cats’ Park.

She commented: “When I approached a member of the council to request some fencing in the cemetery, I was fobbed off with the excuse that there was no available money, and judging by the variety of causes this council chucks money at I found that hard to believe.

“This town is seriously lacking in its own dog warden, not someone who has to do a variety of other tasks or someone who comes from Weymouth.”

Mrs Hunt went on to praise the town’s former dog warden Derek Hallett, commenting: “He was marvellous; he was everywhere, missed nothing and was never

francesca@lyme-online.co.uk afraid to tackle anyone. He got loads of abuse but always stuck to his guns.

“Now this problem is in the limelight can we ask for more than a few signs and address the problem for what it really is, as it’s only going to get worse?

“Is it not time the council thought about the good of the town longterm instead of funding bottomlespit projects?”

Mrs Hunt said she “was not bothered” about dogs on the beach, but felt dogs in the cemetery was a much bigger concern.

The Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, said the council was acitvely looking at this issue and it was not true that there was no money to deal with it.

He added that members were “appalled” by any defecation on graves and said that they were in the process of installing a sprung gate at the Elizabeth Close entrance to the cemetery, as it had been reported that some residents let their dogs off lead to run around the cemetery.

The council was also looking into low-level fencing to line the paths of the cemetery.

Councillor Larcombe said the town council could not ban dogs from the cemetery unless Dorset Council’s Public Spaces Protection Order, which also covers dogs on beaches, was changed.

A public consultation is currently underway to determine whether changes should be made to current regulations.

Jobs lost as Axminster Carpets collapses into administration THE historic Axminster Carpets has collapsed into administration, with almost all staff made redundant.

After weeks trying to secure a rescue deal, the 265-year-old company called in Duff & Phelps as administrators on Wednesday.

Once one of the largest employers in the area, about 300 of 400 jobs were lost when the company previously went into administration in 2013. It was then bought out by a consortium led by the private investor Stephen Boyd.

A controlling stake in the historic carpet maker was bought by a Yorkshire-based wool supplier in 2016, and further staff were invited to take voluntary redundancy in September 2019.

Most of the 90 remaining staff have now been made redundant, with just a handful remaining to fulfil the company’s existing orders.

Administrators said they were continuing to explore all potential options for all or part of the remaining business and assets, including the historic brand name itself.

Axminster is famous for its carpetmaking industry with Axminster Carpets designing and making carpets and rugs in the town since 1755, founded by Thomas Witty.

In 2012 it was awarded a Royal Warrant for the supply of goods and services to the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace. Its other major clients have included Clarence House, the US Congress and Wetherspoon pubs across the country.

A statement from Ulster Carpets said: “We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Axfelt, manufacturers of high quality and fully sustainable underlay. The purchase of this successful brand further demonstrates Ulster’s commitment to developing complementary products to enhance its customer offering.

“Ulster’s ethos and future plans very much revolve around quality and service excellence, and these standards will be brought to bear at Axfelt ensuring the existing product is fully supported and developed at the existing Axminster Carpets base.”

David Acheson, Ulster’s head of strategic operations, added: “We are delighted to be playing a part in the immediate retention of one part of the facility at the Axminster Carpets site. Working with the current employees, Ulster is committed to growing and developing this highly successful product in Devon.

“Ulster Carpets are already developing a number of related businesses in the locality with a view to further increasing employment opportunities as it continues to expand its wider brand portfolio.”

Following the announcement that Axminster Carpets had entered ad-

ministration, East Devon District Council announced it would be facilitating a range of support options from partner organisations to assist staff facing redundancy.

The council is reconvening a support network, which will give staff the opportunity to access direct support, advice and guidance to help them through this difficult period.

East Devon is bringing together a group of relevant organisations, who will be available at the Axminster Job Club at Pippins, Lyme Road, Axminster on Thursday, February 27. This session will be repeated over the following weeks as many times as is necessary to ensure that the needs of all redundant staff are met.

Affected staff will be offered the opportunity to come and speak oneto-one with representatives from organisations to find out about universal credit/benefits, council tax, options for retraining and skills development, finding alternative work, support for self-employment.

Organisations offering support will include the council itself, as well as Business Information Point, Job Centre Plus, Citizens Advice, the National Careers Service, Education + Training Skills, Learn Devon, Axminster Job Club, and Community (trade union).

The council wants to encourage all staff, including those unable to at-

tend the event, to speak to the right people and organisations who will understand their individual situations and who are best placed to offer advice and valuable practical support.

Councillor Kevin Blakey, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for economy, said: “We are deeply saddened at the news of further redundancies at Axminster Carpets.

“East Devon District Council responded in October 2019 with a programme of support for employees affected by redundancy at that time. We are now working with a range of partner organisations to widen our support via a series of redundancy support events at Axminster Job Club for as long as the support is required.

“We recognise that finding alternative employment is a daunting task for those facing redundancy, but we are keen that the skills and expertise of the highly trained workforce are recognised by other prospective employers who undoubtedly can benefit from this pool of talent.”

Charity pizza night almost sold out ONLY a few tickets remain for a pizza night to be hosted by the Pilot Boat in Lyme Regis, in aid of Cancer Research UK. The event will be held at the popular pub and restaurant on Tuesday, February 25 from 6.30pm, with all proceeds going to the Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK. Tickets cost £15, including a glass of wine and a choice of two full-size pizzas. There will also be a raffle.

The Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK is hoping to organise one event per month this year, in a bid to raise £10,000 during 2020.

If successful, this will take the branch’s total raised since forming in 2008 to about £180,000.

Its next event will be the popular annual BIG Breakfast, to be held at the Woodmead Halls on Friday, March 27, open from 8am to 1pm.

There is no need to book tickets for this event - just turn up and enjoy a full English breakfast or vegetarian option for £7, or breakfast baps for £4.

Articulated lorry smashes wall in Woodmead Road THE top of Woodmead Road in Lyme Regis was closed to traffic on Wednesday after an articulated lorry smashed a stone wall. The wall outside Springfield House at the junction of Woodmead Road and Silver Street partially collapsed after it was hit by the heavy goods vehicle. Police said the driver reportedly failed to stop at the scene. They cordoned off the top section of Woodmead Road for safety reasons, as the wall was at risk of further collapse, but this was reopened on Thursday.

Last time for Guitars On The Beach ORGANISERS of the popular Guitars On The Beach have announced that this year’s event on Saturday, June 27 will be the last ever.

The announcement came after organisers’ £6,000 grant request from Lyme Regis Town Council was turned down.

Chairman and musical director Brian Street said they now had no choice but to pull the plug after this summer’s show, due to lack of funding.

There has since been an outpouring of support for the event, from both residents and visitors, and an on-

line fundraising page has been set up at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/guitarsonthebeach to ensure that the event goes out with a bang.

Following the announcement, town clerk John Wright commented: “The council is disappointed to hear this year will be the last Guitars on the Beach and would like to thank the organisers for all the efforts they have put in over the years.”

Guitars On The Beach was first launched in 2013 and brings thousands of guitarists of all ages and abilities to play together on the sand.

RNLI mascot to run London Marathon Scouts celebrate Chinese New Year RNLI mascot Stormy Stan, whose ‘home’ is a cupboard at Lyme Regis lifeboat station, is running in this year’s London Marathon… with a little help from a former Penarth crew member. Simon Marchant, a 41-year-old lorry driver who previously served with the Welsh crew, will complete the 26-mile race in the costume.

AS part of their Creative Challenge, members of the 1st Charmouth Scout Group celebrated Chinese New Year by making their own dragon costumes. The Scouts were given basic materials from which to make their costumes, and just 60 minutes later the results were truly outstanding.

Lyme Morris donate to charity DONATIONS collected at recent performances by Lyme Morris have been donated to Axe Valley and West Dorset Ring & Ride. The charity provides a transport service for the elderly and disabled who have difficulties getting out in the Lyme Regis and Axe Valley area. It enables them to access such things as hospital appointments, shopping and to have regular trips out in the local area. Lyme Morris presented a cheque to the charity’s chairman Sandra Ward on February 17 following successful collections at recent performances.

Plans for new classroom building at Woodroffe THE Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis has submitted a planning application for a new twostorey teaching block. The new block would be built on the sloping bank between the school’s playing courts and sports hall, and would include a library resource centre, three classrooms, small group room, toilets, offices and storage space. Lifeboat crew rescue to feature on BBC next week LYME Regis lifeboat crew’s dramatic rescue of two teenage boys who were being swept out to sea will feature on the BBC 2 series ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ at 8pm on Wednesday, February 26. The rescue was filmed by crew members and shows how two 14 year old boys were found clinging to each other after being swept out to sea 200 metres from the River Axe.

LYME Regis has been packed this week for the first school holiday of the year, underlining its growing appeal as a resort for all seasons.

Whether it’s sunbathing or storm watching, you just can’t beat a trip to the British seaside!

The town has been hit by back-toback storms over the past two weekends, fortunately with no major incidents or problems reported, unlike many other areas of the country suffering from terrible flooding.

Our ‘wet weather’ attractions have certainly been pulling in the crowds, with Lyme Regis Museum reportedly extra busy over the half term break and the Marine Theatre hosting a children’s disco.

But it’s the spectacular sight of the Cobb on a stormy day that will always be the main attraction.

Lyme’s historic harbour has become the go-to spot for photographers keen to capture dramatic shots of waves crashing over the Cobb, so often seen in the national press.

Luckily, we have one of the South West’s top snappers among our ranks in Richard Austin, and we can always rely on him for a great shot.

Some of his latest photos feature on today’s front page and page 7.

But Richard and other photographers familiar with Lyme know to keep their distance when capturing the waves, unlike many who take the risky decision to walk along the Cobb in sometimes trencherous conditions.

Over the past few weeks it’s felt like the rain will never end, but fortunately the first signs of spring have started to appear. Many have taken to social media this week to post photos of daffodils and other spring flowers that are suddenly popping up all over the town.

And as we finally reach the end of February, LymeOnline is celebrating its second anniversary this week.

NE of the great pleasures of editing a newspaper in such a lively community as Lyme Regis is that you get to attend virtually every social event in town.

On occasions that has meant being out virtually every night of the week. But you can’t call it work, can you?

Now I am no longer the editor - having passed my green eyeshade to my daughter Francesca many moons ago - she is now the one with an hectic social life.

But as president of three local organisations, I still try to get out and about as often as I can and being slightly more detached from the movers and shakers of Lyme I can take a more relaxed

SO sad to hear this week that Axminster Carpets has fallen into administration with the loss of jobs for 90 members of staff, some of whom had been with the firm all their working life.

I got to know Harry Dutfield, the founder of Axminster Carpets, well when I was a young reporter. To be truthful I was a bit scared of him. He was a big man in every sense of the word, but I quickly warmed to him when I helped him write his life story and soon came to realise what an incredible character he was.

Harry was a tough taskmaster but a generous and sympathetic boss and hundreds of his employees down the years had cause to witness his many acts of kindness.

The manufacture of quality carpets has been in decline for many years and its ultimate demise was probably inevitable, despite recent monumental efforts to stay in business.

Axminster Carpets put the town of Axminster on the world map and. the town is all the poorer for its demise.

I found it particularly distressing to read some of the comments on Facebook last week following the allocation of council grants and the insulting nature of many of the comments on dogs on the beach.

I have written many times in this column on the unbelievable amount of time and effort people of Lyme willingly give to the many charities and good causes in the town. To quote a much used phrase on these pages, “Lyme never stops giving”.

But it’s not just about charity. I don’t know the exact figure of the number of local groups there are in the town but it must be somewhere between 60 and 80, all striving to raise money to keep their clubs and societies going.

As generous as Lyme Regis Town Council has been in recent times, they cannot continue to give financial help to everyone who seeks it.

And we should not forget that there are many in the town, certainly a majority, that do not belong to any group or ever intend to be. One of them stopped me recently as posed the question: “Why should I - through my council tax payments - give money so people can enjoy an activity that I have no interest in and which does not benefit me in any way?” He had a point.

There has also been a few caustic comments around about the town council putting their council tax precept up by four per cent (around £12,000), affecting all householders in Lyme, and then giving away £80,000 in grants.

One other issue which is causing concern is maintaining the voluntary effort for some of the town’s long serving organisations. In many cases, the main officers in such groups have been doing the job for decades and are looking to step down. The big question is - are there enough willing volunteers to step up to the plate and take over?

‘Amazing’ - the only word for Dexter IN sports journalism there’s a tendancy to overdo the superlatives when describing outstanding physical achievements.

In describing seven-year-old Dexter Weldin, who lives in Uplyme, having won a gold medal in the recent Taekwondo Championships in London, we settled for “amazing” (see page 23).

I don’t think too many who know this inspirational young man would argue.

His success at such a tender age in

this most disciplined of sports has won him an invitation to train with the GB Taekwondo team in Manchester next month.

Dexter’s parents, Sophie and Paul Weldin, are justifiably proud of their son and there was no one with a bigger smile on her face when Dexter was presented with his gold medal than Sharon Ward (see above) who runs Lyme’s Taekwondo Club with such passion and enthusiasm. A day for all to savour.

ONE of football’s greatest characters and deadliest goalscorers, Jimmy Greaves, celebrated his 80th birthday this week.

To mark this milestone, his many admirers, especially in Fleet Street, are campaigning for him to be knighted.

Jimmy is not in good health these days and there are few football afficionados who would deny him this honour - especially me.

Whilst working in London I spent five very enjoyable years as a vice-president at Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club and bumped into Jimmy on a number of occasions.

Jimmy, of course, was Spurs’ highest ever goalscorer with 266 strikes to his credit as well as

I first met Jimmy when I was one of the organisers of a summer sporting festival in the 1980s to raise money to build a new pavilion at the King George V playing field in Uplyme for the cricket club.

One of the events we organised was a Soccer Symposium with Jimmy as the main guest. He

spoke with passion about the game he loved and also emotionally on his struggles with alcohol.

I chaired the gathering and I remember when a question was put to Jimmy by a well-known local football manager about some technical coaching issue.

Jimmy was obviously irked by this. He took a big sigh and then whispered in my ear: “I hate bloody coaches. They are ruining this game.”

Jimmy, of course, was brimming with natural talent and I doubt whether he learned anything from coaching sessions.

He went on to have a glittering career in television and football punditry and remains to this day one of the most idolised characters in the football world - and that’s why they are queuing up for him to be become Sir Jimmy Greaves.

‘It could be fatal’ ■ CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE Lyme Regis lifeboat operations manager Nick Marks has warned that walking along the Cobb’s high wall in such conditions could have “fatal results”, and the local lifeboat would not be able to launch in such weather.

He commented: “These videos and stills [pictured right and on front page] once again highlight the dangers of walking on the Cobb high wall in strong winds and heavy seas. It would be very easy for someone to be blown off the wall or swept into the sea with potentially fatal results.

“At this time of year sea water temperature is low such that survival times will be just a few minutes. The recent high winds and heavy seas are also well outside the safe operating limits of our inshore lifeboat so we would unable to launch.

“All weather boats capable of launching in these conditions are

based along the coast at Weymouth and Exmouth but would take over an hour to come to the aid of anyone in the sea off Lyme Regis.”

Bridport and Lyme Regis harbourmaster James Radcliffe added: “The Cobb high wall can be dangerous in high winds and heavy seas, it can also be slippery when wet, and there are no handrails. Please obey the warning signs placed on the steps leading up to wall and keep off the wall in high winds.”

Last month, emergency services were called out to two people who fell from the high wall on the same day in far more clement weather conditions, due to a build up of algae making the surface particularly slippery.

One man fell off the wall into the shallow sea and was picked up by two paddleboarders, while a second casualty fell onto the lower wall and was taken to hospital with back injuries.

Health Champion volunteers to ease pressure on GP surgeries A GROUP of Lyme Bay Medical Practice patients are some of the first in the county signing up to help their community as Health Champions.

The volunteers are working with the Lyme Bay Medical Practice to help ease the burden placed on GP surgeries by giving advice to fellow patients, in cases where a doctor or nurse is not needed.

The Health Champions, as NHS England has dubbed the new scheme, support service improvement, run groups for patients and help connect the practice with local voluntary groups.

In turn, Lyme Bay Medical Practice works with them in a collaborative way, with much of the champions’ work arising from their own ideas. They also provide a source of additional capacity to assist the practice in its health promotion and outreach work.

The scheme fits into the government’s plans of Universal Personalised Care with an emphasis on ‘Social Prescribing’.

Social Prescribing is a way for local agencies to refer people to a groups like the Health Champions who can then connect people to community groups and statutory services for practical and emotional support.

One of the volunteers at Lyme Bay Medical Practice is Vanessa Plana, who said she “leapt at the chance to help fellow patients”.

“You hear so much about the NHS needing help and we were offered the chance to help to which I was happy to do my bit,” she commented.

“We all went to find out more about being a Health Champion and during a talk we heard that 45 per cent of appointments in GP surgeries are non-medical. We are hoping to be a non-medical arm of the practice to help signpost people to the help they need.”

The Health Champions will run groups for patients and help put others in touch with groups than can best help them.

Vanessa said that success would come by taking some of the strain from the practice.

“I think success for this scheme will be to

help as many people as possible and if, because of our work, the practice feels a slight drop in the number of medical appointments and a reduction in waiting times as well, that would be satisfying,” she added.

The champions will split their time between Kent House and medical centre and provide drop-in sessions at both sites.

Another familiar face in the volunteer ranks is Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) volunteer Charles King.

He said: “I was already involved at the medical centre with CAB and doing my bit for the Health Champions seemed a delightful addon.”

Charles said the champions have already had two referrals from doctors and they can then signpost the patient to the right area of help they need.

“The GPs do a job in identifying issues, sometimes the issues are mental health problems ranging from loneliness to money troubles,” he said.

“That’s when we can step in and show the patients groups in the local area that can help them.”

Kerina Toates is another local patient who was happy to give up her time in order to help others.

She said: “I had been thinking about volunteering for some time and, with my background in health care, I know the pressures that are involved in local health care and I wanted to see what it was all about.

“People come to us with needs that aren’t medical, but often social and it’s up for us to provide a good support network for them. I have used voluntary services like this in the past and it helped me, so if I can help someone in the same way, then that’s all well and good.

LYME REGIS TOWN COUNCIL Plans to preserve Guildhall take step forward HOPES of preserving the ancient Guildhall have been raised as our proposals to protect it from large vehicles have won vital support.

The window of the Grade II listed building is struck on a regular basis by large vehicles and there have been 12 collisions, we know of, since March 2017.

Having repaired the window in January, it has been hit twice since then.

Due to concerns the structure of the entire building is being put at risk by these collisions, we have been trying to find a solution for many years.

These measures have included installing bollards, which have proved ineffective, requesting further signage to prevent large vehicles driving through the town, requesting a traffic regulation order to restrict vehicles of a certain size, and requesting amendments to

satellite navigation systems.

As these measures have failed, we are now progressing proposals to reduce the projection of the window to give large vehicles more room to negotiate the turn.

This is a drastic solution but it’s the only option we have left and we have employed a heritage consultant to put a case together to support the alterations, in order to preserve and protect the rest of the building.

A statement of significance and heritage has been produced by the consultants, which outlines several options, including reducing the projection of the window, the removal of the window, or the relocation of the window further to the east.

The experts believe reducing the projection is the best option as it retains the window insitu and preserves the intrinsic character and

appearance of the listed building.

We recently met at the Guildhall with Historic England and listed buildings officers from Dorset Council, who understood our concerns and were supportive of the proposals.

With their backing, we are now progressing to make a full planning application to alter the projection of the window by nine inches.

It is vital this planning application has the support of the local community to demonstrate the importance of this historic building to the town.

When the planning application is submitted, we would urge everyone in the community to submit a supporting comment to the planners and these details will be publicised when the time comes.

Share your ideas on how council Interactive map to replace holiday guide can engage with the community HOW do you think the council could better engage with the local community and be more open and accountable?

We’re beginning to formulate a community engagement strategy with the aim of getting local people more involved, to ensure residents are better informed, to help develop stronger relationships with the public and local organisations, and to help inform council decision-making.

The council has its own ideas about how these aims could be achieved but we’d also like to know how the public would like us to involve the community more.

The ways we currently connect with the community include via our social media pages, our new website, the local survey group Lyme Voice, and even this monthly newspaper column.

We recently held a public consultation about

our objectives over the next five years, which included an open day, and the public is welcome to attend meetings of the council and its committees, which take place almost every week.

The council recognises the community has a central role to play in influencing and shaping what it does and councillors are mindful that it is the local residents who elected them to their positions.

It’s therefore important residents understand and trust the work of the council and there is a mutual relationship between the two, so we’re all working together for one aim – to make Lyme Regis a better place to live, work and visit.

Mini golf course given a revamp

THE mini golf course has been given a much-needed revamp – although wet weather this half term has prevented much play.

The worn and uneven felt carpet at the Lister Gardens course has been replaced with astro turf.

It runs slower than the old course and keen mini golfers may like to try their hand at beating the course record.

The refurbishment has been paid for by section 106 funding from the former West Dorset District Council, which was ringfenced specifically for play areas.

We’ve made good use of this funding, having spent the majority on refurbishing Henry’s Way play area, with enough money left to put an extra piece of play equipment in the toddler area at Anning Road play park in the near future.

Our thanks to Dorset Artificial Grass for completing the work on the mini golf course for the half term, despite rain calling off play most days.

WE’RE about to launch an exciting new town map and interactive discovery trail around Lyme Regis.

The council decided to no longer produce a traditional holiday guide for the town and to replace it with this new map and trail.

Local artist Keith Robinson has designed the beautifully illustrated map, which can also be found on a much larger scale at Bell Cliff.

The map has been updated and will also include a walking trail around Lyme Regis, taking in 10 key areas of the town and adverts from local businesses.

A website – and later an app – will accompany the trail, so visitors can watch a video and find out more information about the main attractions and historical and cultural sites.

Community grant applications now open THE council is now inviting applications for community grants of up to £1,000.

We have up to £20,000 available in 2020/21 to award to local organisations for capital projects that help and support the community.

Grants can be used for the purchase of materials and equipment, or the provision of a service that is of benefit to Lyme Regis.

The grants fall into two further categories: projects up to £500 and projects up to £1,000.

Projects over £500 require 50 per cent match

funding of the total project cost and more supporting documents.

THE next 11 beach huts will be sold off in March to make way for new ones on the seafront.

The council is replacing the Cart Road beach huts over three years and is selling the old ones at a discounted rate.

Last year we sold the first 12 for £50 each and the response was overwhelming, with all 12 gone within eight minutes.

This year we’re offering 11 huts for the same price and they will be available to view at Woodmead car park from Tuesday, March 10 to Sunday, March 15.

The huts will then go on sale from 10am on Tuesday, March 17, either at the council office or by calling 01297 445175. But be quick, we’re expecting them to sell as quickly as last year!

Lyme Regis couple celebrate Lyme Bay Ladies members prove diamond wedding anniversary they’re ‘Stronger Than Thought’ WELL-KNOWN Lyme Regis couple John and Jill Chase celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this week.

John and Jill first met in 1959 when they were both working for the Da Havilland Aircraft Company in Christchurch, John as a designer and Jill as a secretary to earn money for her ballet training.

They were married the following year, aged 20 and 24, at the Peartree Church in Southampton, and the couple moved to Lyme Regis in 1962.

Jill continued to work as a secretary for many local doctors but, as an accomplished dancer, she is best known locally for having founded the Lyme Regis School of Ballet in 1976.

She taught many local children over 40 years - up to three generations of some families - and was involved in many local productions by Lyme Regis Pantomime Society and Lyme Regis Musical Theatre with her dancers, before retiring as principal and handing over the reigns to former student Freya Lovett in 2018.

Meanwhile, John worked for tool and steel manufacturer J.F. Shand Ltd, in Axminster, working his way up to production director, and later became a civil servant for the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas, working across Dorset, Devon and the Isles of Scilly.

He sat on Lyme Regis Town Council during the 1970s and 80s, serving as deputy mayor under the late Dennis Applebee.

A keen sailor, John has also been involved in Lyme Regis Sailing Club and volunteered with the lifeboat crew in his younger days.

The couple have two children - son Paul is a marine pilot and daughter Tanya is an intensive care nurse living in New Zealand - and three grandchildren.

LymeOnline: celebrating two years in print!

THIS week LymeOnline marks its second anniversary with its 52nd printed issue.

Following the launch of the LymeOnline community website in January 2018, the first printed issue of the newspaper was released just a month later, on February 23 2018.

With more than 245 local titles closing across the country over the past 15 years, we were bucking the trend, taking on board Lyme Regis residents’ strong desire for local news to be presented in the traditional format, as well as online embracing more modern technologies.

That’s a concept we continue to focus on today, bringing you a packed printed newspaper every fortnight, often including more than 50 local stories, as well as continuing to develop our popular website, which has recently seen the launch of our weekly video news bulletins.

To celebrate our second anniversary, over this three-page special we’ve picked out some of the top stories and recurring themes that have featured in LymeOnline since launching in 2018.

It may be said that ‘bad news sells’, but 90 per cent of the stories featured in LymeOnline are positive, celebrating the achievements and communityminded spirit of local residents, and the abundantly varied programme of events we enjoy each year.

We have been overwhelmed with your support since we launched. While the newspaper industry may be in decline, we feel hyperlocal ventures such as LymeOnline have a bright future, as readers recognise their importance within the community.

Simon Kelner, former editor in chief of The Independent and Independent on Sunday, recalled fond memories of his first job in the local press in a recent column for the i, in which he also spoke about the importance of the local newspaper industry: “Local papers matter. They are immediately and directly accountable to their public in a way that national papers aren’t. They act as a cohesive force.

They provide an essential oversight of local politics.

They are a powerful instrument of a town’s identity.”

MARY’S LEGACY STILL MAKING NEWS By far one of the biggest stories since launching LymeOnline has been the filming of Mary Anning biopic ‘Ammonite’, which brought award-winning actresses Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan to Lyme Regis in March 2019.

The arrival of the stars saw a huge spike in traffic to the LymeOnline website, with one story about the filming being read more than 11,100 times.

And it’s not just films about fossils that have made the headlines. In September 2019 local fossil collector Chris Moore revealed one of his most significant finds, thought to be the finest block of ammonites ever discovered along the Jurassic Coast.

This story is also among the top 10 most read articles on the LymeOnline website.

Five-year-old Helena Ashley - a modern day Mary Anning - made the news in June 2018, after discovering the amazing imprint of a fish 190 million years old, named a pholidophoru, inside an ordinary looking pebble.

Helena discovered the pebble on Charmouth beach and insisted to her mum that there was something special inside.

Stonemason Archie Stoke Faiers made his impressive fossil discovery in January 2018 while out walking his dogs on Monmouth Beach. He had been inspired to keep his eyes peeled by BBC documentary ‘Attenborough and the Sea Dragon’, filmed in the same location.

The large ammonite discovered by Archie was an 190-million-year-old microderoceras birchi.

THE TOWN THAT KEEPS ON GIVING We’re not sure how much Lyme Regis raises for charity every year, but it must run into many thousands of pounds.

Whenever there’s a good cause or campaign to support, you can be sure Lyme Regis residents will get behind it!

Since launching LymeOnline two years ago, some of the most well-supported fundraisers have included the annual Lifeboat Week, which raised a record £40,000 for the RNLI in 2019, and organisers of Regatta & Carnival Week continues to dish out several thousands of pounds to local good causes every year.

Candles on the Cobb was taken over by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis in 2018, raising more than £10,000 for Rotary charities and the Royal British Legion despite being hit by poor weather.

Golf club captain Lee Caddy and his partner Lynnette Ravenscroft made great efforts to raise more than £20,000 for the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust in 2019. The annual appeal for the town’s Christmas lights and events for the Lyme Regis branch of Cancer Research UK, as well as many other charities, have also been very well supported.

In 2019, the town also showed its community spirit by backing a fundraising campaign to support local resident Matthew Webb in his fight against a rare form of cancer, as well as an appeal to save Lyme Regis pre-school from closure.

ALWAYS EXCELLING ON LAND & SEA As if walking up and down those hills doesn’t keep us fit enough, there’s plenty of sports clubs to join in with in Lyme Regis.

Sailing, gig rowing, football, cricket, golf, bowls, skittles and darts - there’s never a shortage of news for LymeOnline’s sport section. And there’s also no shortage of celebrations, as Lyme’s sporting fraternity continues to excel.

In May 2019, Lyme Regis Gig Club saw its best ever results at the world championships in the Isles of Scilly and Lyme Regis Sailing Club continues to thrive with a popular youth section.

On dry land, last year’s successful fundraising campaign saw the community get behind Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club and save the 132-year-old organisation from closure. The appeal was so successful the club was even able to make some improvements to its clubhouse for the 2019 season.

Lyme Regis has also seen success on and off the pitch, with its First Team proving they can hold their own in the Premier Division of the Devon & Exeter League, while its fundraising team continues to work hard behind the scenes to improve facilities at the Davey Fort.

From beautiful sunsets to breathtaking storms, we’ve had it all... and who can forget the spring snowfall of March 2018?

Warmer weather has also brought some more unusual wildlife to Lyme Regis. A seal was regularly seen basking in the sunshine on the harbour pontoons last year, and dolphins caused a stir in August 2019 with everyone keen to catch a glimpse!

Local charity helping the planet to recover from devastating bush fires LAST October, Lyme Regis-based reforestation charity The Word Forest Organisation hosted its first community screening of its documentary ‘#TreesAreTheKey’, narrated by award-winning actress Kate Winslet.

The premiere took place at the Marine Theatre and it played to a packed auditorium, raising about £2,000 which enabled 800 trees to be planted and building materials to be bought for a classroom the charity will be building in rural Kenya.

The Word Forest CEO Tracey West said: “The planet is in dire need of more trees. Putting aside for a moment deforestation from greedy corporates and thoughtless actions from governments who should be hell bent on protecting their existing canopy cover. Over in Australia, 12 million hectares have been decimated by forest fires, some of which are still burning.

“They've claimed the lives of at least one billion animals too. How does our planet even begin to recover from that magnitude of biodiversity loss?

“A good start would be masses of planting in the tropical zones, where trees grow up to 10 times faster than anywhere else on the planet.”

The Word Forest trustees decided to put the 45-minute film ‘#TreesAreTheKey’ on general release with a free screening licence to raise awareness of the urgent need for more tropical forests.

They hoped it would encourage eco-friendly groups and schools to put on fundraising screenings, and it has worked. Film showings are taking place as far away as New Zealand and Toronto, as well as closer to home in Charmouth, Axminster and Thorncombe.

The charity is now looking for more help to spread the message even further.

Tracey said: ‘#TreesAreTheKey’ is spreading the word about the vital role trees play in stabilising the planet's weather systems. It tells the story of why we need to plant more trees in the tropics too, and why we absolutely have to support the amazing people who are tending the forests. They're quite literally living on the front-

line of climate change.

“By hosting a screening and having a donations bucket and offering delicious refreshments, these film showings are raising vital funds and getting more trees in the ground, whilst giving people an enlightening night out."

Rikey Austin of Alice's Bear Shop in Lyme Regis is the ethics trustee of The Word Forest.

She commented: "Please share news of ‘#TreesAreTheKey’ on your social media feeds and ask, 'could you put on a screening?' If it's nearby, our team will come along and give a Q&A at the end.

The film will be followed by a question and answer session, refreshments and raffle. The Scouts will also help you calculate your carbon off setting for travel or holidays.

Lyme to host pre-release screening of Dorset-based film

T

HE Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis will host a special pre-release screening of ‘Lawrence: After Arabia’, an independent movie telling the story of the last year of T.E. Lawrence’s life.

The film tells the story of the last year of the life of T.E. Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia - a scholar, writer, soldier and reluctant hero.

Retiring to his cottage in Dorset he hopes to escape his past but is pulled into political intrigue.

While he has powerful friends, with his uncompromising manner he has also made dangerous enemies. As they plot against him, he dies in a tragic motorcycle accident. However, with such enemies, was his untimely death really an assassination and cover up by the British Secret Service?

‘Lawrence: After Arabia’ is the final act in the T.E. Lawrence story, chronologically following David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962), which starred Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence, and ‘Lawrence: A Dangerous Man’ (1996), which starred Ralph Fiennes in the lead role.

The third in the trilogy was filmed on location across Dorset with a local cast and crew.

A special pre-release screening will be held at the Marine Theatre, followed by a question and answer session with writer and director Mark J.T. Griffin, on Sunday, May 3 at 7.30pm.

Ahead of the event, LymeOnline caught up with Mark in the editing suite in the last few weeks of post production with the theatrical cut of the movie nearing completion, and here he talks about the project and his life-long interest in T.E. Lawrence: ● We understand this is a project that you’ve been working on for some years?

Yes, I became interested in T.E. Lawrence when I was very young – I read about him and visited the places he was connected to around Dorset. Of

course, I saw David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ with Peter O’Toole and some years later ‘Dangerous Man’ with Ralph Fiennes. I always felt the mystery of his death had never been explored. ● The mystery of his death?

Yes, he was involved in a motorcycle accident on his Brough Superior and died six days later. At the inquest a witness described seeing a black car just before Lawrence lost control of his bike which then careered into two boys on bikes. The more I researched this incident it seemed to me there had been a cover up – a conspiracy to get rid of Lawrence.

He had been involved in infiltrating Moseley and the black-shirts, was in contact with King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan about an Arab uprising, and was possibly being groomed for a job to reinvigorate the Secret Service. ● And this is your directorial debut?

Yes, my first film, though I’ve had directorial experience in the theatre. It was the technical side of filming I was most worried about so I began to search for a director of photography to help and guide me. I wanted someone who was interested in the subject and the period vision I had.

● Was that a challenge?

Yes, most were not in tune with project. Eventually I found Simon Lawrence who had worked mainly in TV and is also a very talented still photographer.

He has been awesome in guiding me through the process. ● What was your budget?

Tiny! Shall we say in six figures but not much more than five figures. If you think a Marvel movie costs $350million, we couldn’t have afforded their coffee bill! ● Did that mean compromise?

Of course, in some areas. But all projects have an element of compromise. We tried to get the money on the screen and cut our cloth to suit our budget.

We planned the locations we needed and got them by and large. We knew we couldn’t afford big names for leads but used the big names for stronger cameo lead parts.

Nicole Ansari Cox played Sarah Lawrence, Lawrence’s mother; Brian Cox is our voice over for Epilogue and for Lawrence’s father; Michael Maloney plays George Brough; and Hugh Fraser plays Lord Allenby. Lawrence is played by Bournemouth actor Tom Barber Duffy, who’s been in ‘The Imitation Game’ and ‘Downton Abbey’. By and large the rest of the cast and the crew were Dorset-based and there was great buy-in from them. ● With previous actors like Peter O’Toole and Ralph Fiennes playing Lawrence, the choice for an actor to play him must have been a hard one?

I decided at the start not to cast an actor with the same stature and looks. T.E. was only 5ft 6in but I wanted the intensity from the actor, a heroism but sensitivity in the actor and Tom has that in spades. ● Was filming a learning experience for you?

Oh yes! Of course we had to a plan and arrange locations, props, sets, accommodation, catering, not to mention cast and crew! I was lucky enough to

have a great team and a fantastic crew. Everyone doubled up on roles as production assistants, boom operators, setups and so on, what was needed when it was needed. We all ‘mucked in’. ● What were the most difficult days?

Probably the funeral scenes. We had 20 actors, 70 extras, period costume and hair, makeup, hymns to sing and dodgy weather, which fortunately passed by lunchtime. The scenes were filmed at Moreton Church where Lawrence’s funeral was held and, due to access to the church, we had to film the service, procession and dialogue scene in a whole day which we did. ● What about the accident?

The accident/assassination was filmed over two days. We were very concerned about the choreography of the whole thing so not only had storyboards but also created the ‘Lawrence Accident Lego Movie’ so we could try out things to get the scenes right when we got on set. We found a section of road, which we closed, which was perfect – very similar to the original location.

Over the two days we had a vintage bike and a Wolsley car, a Brough Superior (worth about £250k) which needed to be ‘crashed’ without damaging it, a drone, GoPro and of course camera, sound, cast and crew all without direct power with a generator 200 yards away from the action! Great fun! ● Where was it shot?

The whole movie with one exception was filmed in Dorset and where possible at the original locations, for example Clouds Hill Cottage where Lawrence lived, the church where his funeral was held, at his grave, St Martin’s in Wareham where they have his effigy. It was often a moving experience. Lawrence is a character which is still very close to the people’s hearts in Dorset.

Royal Voluntary Service helping to tackle loneliness and isolation

MANY older people in Dorset can have their lives changed through contact with befriending schemes.

Loneliness and isolation are common among older people who maybe living alone, without friends or relatives, or lack confidence to walk outside of their own home.

The Royal Voluntary Service’s Community Companions provide volunteers to people who require additional support to remain independent and active in their own community, also if required to provide a break for family carers.

The Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) was originally known as the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service and is now one of the largest volunteer organisations in the country, with over than 40,000 volunteers.

Its befriending group works under the umbrella of RVS and covers the Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Bridport area. It is currently in the rare position of having sufficient befriending volunteers but needing more clients to visit.

The UK’s older population is growing as people start to live longer, and more and more people require support to tackle loneliness and isolation. There are also many family carers

who also need a break from caring for their loved ones. This is where Royal Voluntary Service Community Companions can assist.

Volunteers visit clients once a week or once a fortnight, depending on the client’s wishes.

They can keep the same volunteer, which can often result in a good friendship being formed.

All our volunteers are DBS checked, their ages vary from 45 to 65 and they are male and female.

This home visit befriending service is free.

Most clients simply enjoy a cup of tea and chat, but volunteers also help with jigsaw puzzles, read newspapers or books to those who are visually impaired, teach them to Skype their grandchildren, assist with correspondence, sit to relieve a family carer or carry out shopping - the list is endless.

Volunteers can accompany clients on short walks or take them out on short trips (in this case the client pays a nominal sum for fuel).

They do not provide any form of personal care.

This iconic image came about at the first Guitars On The Beach event in 2013 when I asked organiser Geoff Baker to use his mic and ask the musicians to hold up their guitars. They did, and it became a ‘must do’ at all future Guitars On The Beach events. Now it seems that this year’s event in June will be the last time guitars in abundance will be on the beach, due to a lack of funding. I’m sure that other seaside towns may have their eye on the situation at Lyme and wouldn’t that be a heart breaker if we did loose out to another resort?

■ I AM a 71-year-old resident of Lyme Regis and have recently been made aware that the town council is looking into issues regarding noise late at night and the locals’ inability to get a proper night’s sleep.

I notice that the current complaints seem to centre around Marine Parade. I wish to inform you that I live further along the river at Jericho and the situation here is also very bad.

People use the river walkway either to walk home after a night out or to congregate in the small hours ‘out of sight’. This leads to a constant problem of noise, anti-social behaviour and wanton vandalism for residents.

I personally did not get one full night’s sleep last summer and I still, in February, do not have a week go by without some disruption late at night.

For example, at 2am on February 7 I was woken up by drunk people walking up the river path.

There are half term holiday drunks, Easter drunks, Christmas drunks - it is a year-round problem.

On one occasion after a high-profile football match, at 5am some people started smashing the render off the wall of a nearby property, which smashed to pieces and has since been vandalised further. I have also had my wheelie bins thrown into the river and some chap regularly drives his amphibious truck along the river itself.

Nothing has ever been achieved by reporting

these matters to the police. I have called them and to my knowledge not one police officer has ever looked into it.

The problem is exacerbated by people being allowed to rent out semi-detached or terraced properties and make handsome profits by letting their houses as ‘Butlins holiday camps’.

Obviously, if you’ve paid £1,500 to stay in a holiday let for a week, you don’t want to be bothered by the fact that an elderly, vulnerable person lives on the other side of the thin, wooden dividing wall. You’ll be too busy having parties into the early hours and allowing your brood of children to scream their heads off from dusk til dawn.

The law regarding the disruption caused by holiday properties seriously needs looking into. We already have anti-social behaviour legislation could this not be used to reign in these rogue holiday lets I fully understand that the town thrives on tourism and we should do all we can to make our visitors feel welcome. However, the rampant exploitation by holiday letters at the expense of local people’s sanity and quality of life has gone too far, and is neither fair on the holidaymakers or the long-suffering residents.

I hope this letters brings to light and helps you to understand some of the pressing issues being faced by local people on a daily basis.

■ I’VE read with interest LymeOnline’s letters both for and against allowing dogs on the beach.

Those against naturally focus on a small minority of owners who do not pick up after their dog fouls. Well I agree, shame on them. However, this generalisation is overlooking a lesser known benefit that the majority of dogs and their owners are providing the town…

This afternoon I was on the beach with my dog, named Luna - a mini schnauzer (other local dog owners will know who we are). I watched her use her extraordinary sense of smell to track down, and then use her equally extraordinary appetite, to greedily devour half a bag of chips that someone had tossed away, all before I could stop her.

Then 10 minutes later I was picking up poo, as you do, bagging and binning it, and it suddenly struck me that actually we dog/owner teams are providing a pretty damn good beach clean-up service.

Anything edible is detected, hoovered up, internally processed (heaven knows what goes on in a dog’s stomach), to later emerge neatly compacted, packaged and deposited for the human owner to dispose of.

This is just one example of Luna’s devotion to duty. In recent weeks, as well as other discarded

food (there have been similar chips incidents and even chewing gum – yuk!), she retrieved a dead fish from the water’s edge in the harbour (a dog fish, of course!). That one she was particularly proud of, being nearly as big as her, and it took a very great deal of chasing, shouting and arm-waving to get it from her and place it out of harms way, in a bin.

All these tasty morsels would otherwise be seagull fodder. Luna not only removes their food source, but also chases them off if they’re daft enough to land anywhere close.

It’s not the just edible stuff though – bottles, food trays and other single-use plastics all get her attention and have to be confiscated, in exchange for a dog biscuit. I’m sure many other dog owners have similar stories they could share.

So as well as an escalating seagull problem can you imagine how much Council Tax could increase if dogs are banned from the beach?

Wouldn’t we have to fund an army of litter pickers to do the job, or else face drowning in a rising tide of human waste?

Great interest in keepers’ roll of honour

New look for the Uplyme pavilion THE new committee at Uplyme and Lyme Regis Cricket Club, led by chairman Steve Batey, have been working hard behind the scenes during the close season to develop their pavilion to benefit members and the local community.

They are ripping out the old and bringing in the new by fitting a new and improved bar, kitchen and social area across the back wall.

The clubhouse was built by voluntary labour in the 1980s and this is the first major internal refurbishment since then.

The club is hoping to hire out the space for small events and parties, available from May onwards.

philip@lyme-online.co.hb LYMEOnline Sport’s roll of honour for Lyme Regis FC goalkeepers over the last 50 years attracted a great deal of interest with more than 400 people reading the story online.

Inevitably, we missed out a few names and we are indebted to those who have submitted the ones we forgot.

It was also remiss of me to not have mentioned my great sporting pal John Stamp who played most of his football with his home club, Charmouth. Stomper played at least one game between the sticks for Lyme Regis Reserves when they were managed by Terry White. Apparently, they found difficulty in finding a keeper’s jersey big enough for him!

The feature has also sparked a great deal of discussion among players and ex-players about the best keepers who have played for Lyme.

There was general agreement among my generation that Robert ‘Jock’ McLennan, Grant Northover and Chris Higgs (still playing for the Rovers) were at the top of the tree.

There was also strong support for Nick Tregale and Ashley Caddy to be included in the Seasiders’ Hall of Goalkeeping Fame.

‘Amazing’ Dexter wins place in GB squad SEVEN-year-old Dexter Weldin, of Uplyme, has been invited to be a part of the GB TKD Para Poomsae squad in the GB Open Competition in London, after competing in his first two-day event.

Dexter was accompanied by his parents and siblings and Sharon Ward, who runs Lyme Regis Taekwondo Club, at the event.

This is Sharon’s account of the day: “We arrived at the venue at 9am on the Saturday with a very excited and sometimes nervous

seven-year old. This was his first ever competition. So we had no idea how he was going to do - but the main thing was for it to be fun.

“I took him to meet the GB coaches, have a look around the venue, meet the rest of the GB Para team, chatted to one of my friends who was also competing that day, and then spent the next seven hours keeping Dexter entertained.

“There was much excitement at seeing a T-shirt with all the competitors name on and then finding

his name, and practicing with others in the practice room.

“In the competition Dexter had to perform two poomsae (TKD patterns) of his choice in front of five judges along with other TKD competitors and spectators from other countries and clubs.

“When it came to his turn I was a nervous wreck, hoping he would be fine and not getting stage fright.

He, on the other hand, seemed to take it all in his stride. He told me where I could stand to video him, while he walked off with the GB coach to the edge of the mat (arena).

“He bows, walks on very confidently, bows to the judges and then off he goes - performed his two poomsae amazingly well. He gets a huge cheer from the crowd, his family and myself and he comes off so excited.

“It was a very proud moment for myself, the Lyme club and his family.

“There is then a wait to watch other competitors before the medals. Finally at 7.30pm, Dexter walks up onto the podium to be presented with his gold medal by Grandmaster T. W Shin (a Korean 9th Dan Black Belt) - another amazingly proud moment.

“We then had a long drive home.

I expected Dexter to fall asleep not long after getting in the car - (how wrong was I), the adrenalin and diet Coke finally wore off at 10pm!

Although it was a long day, he enjoyed it.

“On the Sunday our sister club Dorset Taekwondo - had two students competing in the Pairs Freestyle Poomsae, and came away with a bronze, which was a great achievement.

“I would like to say a big thank you to Dexter’s parents, Sophie and Paul Weldin, for driving, his siblings for supporting him, and to the GB coaches for allowing him to be a part of the team.

“He has now been invited to Manchester on March 15 to the Taekwondo GB Academy training centre to train with the GB Para Poomsae squad (this is where all the GB Olympic TKD team train including Jade Jones, Bianca Walkden, Lauren Williams and Amy Truesdale). I think I might be as excited as him about this. This is an incredible experience and opportunity for him and for the club.

“The Lyme club has been running for 15 years - and I never thought that my little club would have a student who has been asked to be part of the GB squad.

“For anyone interested in joining the club, we have spaces for all ages from five years old to 105! We meet Tuesdays at the Scout Hut in Rhode Lane.”

Park run for the kids PARK running is all the rage throughout the country and Lyme Regis will soon have its own event especially for junior runners.

It wil be part of the Park Run UK network and will be aimed at youngsters between the ages of four and 14 with a free weekly two-kilometre course along Gun Cliff Walk, subject to the route being checked

by Dorset Council.

The initiative is being set up by a group of enthusiasts, led by keen local runner Mark Jenkin and his wife Karen, and it is expected to be launched over the Easter weekend.

Mr Jenkin commented: “These events take place in pleasant, safe surroundings and we will encourage kids of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running through to confident runners. We will welcome all.

“The runners will congregate by the anchor at the side of the Rock Point pub. The run will start on the new eastern access towards Church Cliff Beach, all the way to the end of the new walkway and back (twice). The finish funnel will be in the area below the Marine Theatre windows.”

The Junior Park Run will take place every Sunday, starting at 9am, from the Easter weekend.

Seasiders heading for a fixture backlog if poor weather persists PHILIP EVANS

LYME Regis could be heading for another end-of-season fixture backlog if the stormy weather continues.

The whole of the Devon & Exeter League programme was washed out over the weekend even before Storm Dennis hit the South West.

The Seasiders’ Davey Fort pitch is notoriously prone to flooding with the water cascading down over the cliffs onto the playing surface.

Saturday’s postponed home fixture with Beer Albion was the fifth washed-out weekend since the end of November and the 1st team is left with another 15 league games with just 11 weeks of the season left.

And they still have East Devon Cup fixtures to add to their hectic end-ofseason run that will finish on May 9 unless it is extended by league officials.

But a crowded fixture list at the end

of the season is nothing new for Lyme.

Three winters ago the Seasiders went 19 weeks without a home game and back in the day when the Davey Fort ground was very often like a bog, they had to play five nights on the trot to complete their Perry Street fixtures.

Other Premier clubs are in a more precarious position than Lyme, however. Bampton, who could well be in the running for a top three place, have only played ten of their 30 league games and the much-fancied Exeter Cronies also face a backlog, having played just 11 league matches with a number of cup games still to fulfill.

Lyme Reserves have just ten games left to play so they should complete their season in Division Three with ease. And the Rovers, who compete in Perry Street Division Three, play all their homes games on the top pitch at the Woodroffe School which drains well.

The Lyme 1st team have been in indifferent form of late and they have another tough nut to crack tomorrow (Saturday) when the much improved Beer Albion visit the Davey Fort.

Lyme have slumped to fifth place in the Premier table, their lowest position of the season. Beer are trailing four points behind them in sixth place but have a game in hand.

But with heavy rain forecasted again at the end of this week, there is already some doubt about whether the game will go ahead.

Lyme Reserves, having hit form in their last two games with a 6-0 win over Division Three leaders North Tawton, followed by a 5-0 victory over second placed Hawill 2nds, are away to Dunkeswell Rovers in third place.

Uplyme will be hoping to maintain their recent good form at home to Waytown Hounds in Division One whilst Charmouth are away to Crewkerne Rangers in the Arthur Gage Cup.

New 15-year lease for bowling club AFTER many years of negotiations with Lyme Regis Town Council, Lyme Regis Bowling Club has announced that it has secured a future at its iconic site on the Monmouth Beach.

Club spokesman Paul Moffitt commented: “We have negotiated a 15-year lease with favourable terms for the car park which was the main bone of contention.

“Now that we have secured our future, we want to update our clubhouse, something we have been loathe to do because of the uncertainty. A new kitchen is planned for later in the year, with the seating also needing updating at a later date.

“With this in mind the club have been holding ‘soup & coffee’ mornings at the club throughout the winter. If anyone feels like supporting us the next date is February 22 at 11.30am.

New chief exec at Somerset SOMERSET County Cricket Club have announced the appointment of Gordon Hollins as Chief Executive Officer.

He will take up the role on March 16.

For the last 18 years Gordon has held a number of senior positions in cricket, following a successful commercial career in Scotland and the North East of England.

Most recently Gordon was the Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director of County Cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and led the development of county cricket at professional and recreational level across the country in close collaboration with the First Class Counties, National Counties and the recreational game.
