Low key events commemorate VJ Day anniversary

Woodroffe School students celebrate amid results mayhem DESPITE national confusion and protest amid the release of A-level and GCSE results, following disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis celebrated another set of outstanding results. Headteacher Dan Watts - at the end of his first year in the position - said he was “immensely proud” of his students. See pages 8 and 9 for full report and more photos.

We need more police

latest incident saw a violent altercation break out in front of dozens of shocked residents and visitors in Broad Street. The incident took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, August

12 and was described by one eyewitness as “truly horrifying”. Police said the altercation involved two men and a woman and it is reported that one of the offenders threw a metal crowbar at a man before attempting to drive at him. No serious injuries were sus-

tained and no arrests have been made. Police Constable Mike Rumsby, of Bridport Police, said: “A full investigation is underway into this incident and I would urge anyone who witnessed what happened CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

LYME Regis marked the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day last Saturday with low-key commemorations. A full programme of events to mark both Victory in Europe Day in May and VJ Day had been planned in Lyme Regis but was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. To keep in line with restrictions, a private wreath-laying ceremony was held at the war memorial on Saturday morning, followed by the lighting of a beacon on the North Wall in the evening. Busy month for our emergency services

WITH record-breaking temperatures and more people enjoying a ‘staycation’ on the south coast rather than going abroad, August has proved a hugely busy month for Lyme Regis’ emergency services. Volunteers from Lyme Regis lifeboat crew and coastguards have been particularly busy as residents and visitors have made the most of the warm weather. REPORT, PAGE 7

Local football to return
