HOLLYWOOD star Kate Winslet has left town after the filming of ‘Ammonite’, the story of Lyme’s famous fossiler Mary Anning, and so, with the excitement over, we look forward to another bumper season in Dorset’s most popular resort.

In this first issue of Lyme Life in 2019, Kate and co-star Saoirse Ronan feature prominently pictorially with the town wondering whether the film will result in an influx of visitors to our resort after it hits the silver screen in the same manner as ‘The French Lieutenant’s Women’ did in the 1980s.

We also review the early season events, including the Easter Bonnet Parade, the May Fete, Fossil Festival and Jazz Jurassica, alongside a number of editorial features such as the 125th anniversary of the Marine Theatre and a rare insight into the world of Freemasonry in Lyme Regis.

Lyme’s ever-increasing reputation as a foodies’ paradise is emphasised with a sevenpage feature on the wide variety of eating and drinking establishments in the town, and there’s a round-up of all the main events in Lyme up until the end of July.

Celebrate Easter in Lyme Regis

EASTER marks the beginning of the busy tourism season in Lyme Regis, and the colourful Easter Bonnet Parade kicks events off each year.

The parade – with eggs, bunnies and spring flowers galore – was first established in the late 1990s by the late sixtimes Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Barbara Austin MBE, whose smile always beamed from ear to ear as she led the procession down Broad Street.

ally by Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Committee, generously sponsored by local resident Judith Pothecary and businesses who ensure everyone taking part goes home with an Easter treat.

The parade is preceded by a competition for the best bonnets in a range of age categories (even the grown-ups can join in!) and each year sees a growing number of homemade creations of all shapes and sizes competing for the winners’ trophies.

WHAT’S ON AT THE TOWN MILL...

FROM beer to bunnies, there is something for everyone at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis this Easter.

Enjoy a locally-brewed pint in Lyme’s trendiest new bar, Lyme Regis Brewery, based at the mill, including their limited edition beer Curious Mary IPA, named after the town’s famous fossil hunter Mary Anning.

WHAT’S ON AT THE MUSEUM...

LYME Regis Museum will be hosting a number of special events in the run up to Easter.

Children can enjoy a variety of craft events, including Paint a Dinosaur on Monday, April 15th for a small charge, or Jurassic Printing Design on Thursday, April 18th which is a free drop-in event.

The whole family can take part in rockpooling led by museum scientist Chris Andrew on Wednesday, April 17th, when book reading and writing events on the theme ‘Do You Dream of Dinosaurs?’ will be led by Sally Gordon throughout the day inside the museum.

Celebrating 125 years!

Topping off the celebrations, Morgan & West’s Utterly Spiffing Magic Show for Kids and Childish Grown Ups will be held on Sunday, June 23 - a jaw-dropping magic extravaganza to entertain the whole family.

THE Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a special programme of events this spring.

Celebrations will begin when theatre patron and acclaimed chef and restaurateur, Mark Hix MBE, launches is new book ‘Hooked’ at the Marine on Monday, May 20.

For its 125th anniversary year, the Marine Theatre is asking supporters to ‘Adopt a Year’ for £125. Those who take part in the scheme will have their name included on a plaque on the theatre wall and on the website, and will receive a certificate, an anniversary enamel badge, a thank you on social media and an invite to an exclusive anniversary party to be held later this year.

Mark will hold an in-conversation fundraiser in aid of the historic theatre’s ongoing renovation project, along with Mariella Frostrup from BBC Radio 4’s ‘Open Book’.

In June, the Marine is hoping to host a ‘review’ show, bringing back some of the favourite songs and scenes that have been performed on its stage, with the help of local organisations such as Lyme Regis Musical Theatre, Lyme Regis Pantomime Society, the Marine Players, the town band, Lyme School of Ballet and B Sharp.

Local organisations will also be invited to take part in a celebratory parade through the town centre on Fri-

day, June 21 at 6.30pm.

A spokesperson for the Marine Theatre said: “By Adopting A Year, you will help us secure a legacy for the next 125 years to help us continue to deliver a rich programme for the whole community – and become part of our future with your name on our wall!”

Also in June, the Marine will be hosting a free community screening of the 1949 classic film ‘All Over The Town’, which was filmed in Lyme Regis.

Philip Evans shares his favourite memories from the Marine Theatre as it celebrates its 125th anniversary

HE Marine Theatre has been the centre of entertainment for 125 years and for half of that time it has featured prominently in my life.

more and council looked for a tenant to take over the running of the Marine Theatre - none of them with any great success.

My first recollection of our little theatre by the sea is being taken to the Marine for the annual summer shows during the 1950s. With television still very much in its infancy, every year a touring company would descend on the town and present a seaside review with high-kicking dancers, illusionists, magicians and musical acts.

A few years later after the town council came into being and I became a councillor in the early 1980s, I was made chairman of the Marine Theatre Management Committee. As I was still in my early 30s, and there was much discussion at the time that there was nothing for young people to do in the town, I got the council to agree to starting up the discos once again.

On one occasion I can remember a group of us kicking around a football on the Anning Road playing field when suddenly a white stallion galloped into the field with a gun-slinging cowboy on its back. Hi Ho Silver!

It didn’t end well. On one occasion I received a call from the police warning me that there was a group of bikers coming over from Chard (that town again!) to cause mayhem at the Marine. Accompanied by a baseball bat, I met them at the Church Street entrance but was soon overpowered and, as former publican Martin Butler came round the corner in his Bentley, he was forced to pull up. He got up and dragged one of them off me and laid out two others.

The rest of them scarpered as Martin got back into his car muttering: “This is no way for the deputy mayor to act!”

The cowboy act was the main attraction at that week’s show at the Marine and we ran home to make sure our mum and dad got tickets. The poor horse was kept backstage. I don’t know whether any of our readers have been backstage at the Marine. Let’s say it’s cosy to say the least, so where they kept the horse I have no idea!

I can also remember a particularly good hypnotist who managed to get the late Ivor Curtis, who went on to be Mayor of Lyme Regis, out of the audience and on stage. He sent Ivor into a trance and got him shadow boxing and pretending to eat an onion with tears pouring down his face.

It was hilarious and brought the house down. Before bringing him around with a click of his fingers, the hypnotist told Ivor that as he was walking out of the theatre that night he would shout at the top of his voice “three ripe bananas”. And what do you know?

That’s exactly what happened and Ivor never lived it down.

The Marine was purely a theatre in those days with the bar area being the upper circle. But fast forward ten years and it was a different place altogether. With the advance of television programmes, seaside summer shows in small town theatres struggled to survive and, before long, the professional shows at the Marine disappeared and it became a glorified dance hall as the swinging sixties were heralded in.

For those of us in our late teens this was far more exciting, especially when London music promoter Bob Alexander took over the premises to stage his infamous ‘Big Beat Nights’ on a Saturday and a jazz night on a Sunday. An even bigger attraction was the chance to see some of the top beat groups in the country – and to meet a pretty girl. A great number of my generation did most of their courting at the Marine.

Among the big names to appear on the Marine Theatre stage were The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Geno Washington, Dave Dee, Dozey, Beaky, Mick and Titch, The Troggs (pictured above) and

many more. At the same time I was writing a music column in the Express & Echo where I trained as a reporter, getting all the new releases from the recording companies.

The Big Beat nights attracted hundreds of youngsters, many of whom were bussed in from Weymouth, Chard and even Yeovil.

On occasions there would be 600-700 people in the hall and the secret to getting a dance with the girl of your dreams was timing, i.e. to tap her on the shoulder just before the interval and, as she turned around, with her handbag at her feet, just start jiggling, the nearest any of us got to dancing. When the lights went on, you would then ask if she would like to go to the Pilot Boat for an interval drink.

I had fancied this pretty little blonde for weeks and on one rare occasion I managed to get my timing right and, to my amazement, she agreed to accompany me to Jack Vincent’s back bar.

The drink very much in vogue at the time was vodka and lime and I politely asked the pretty blonde if she would like a drink. “Yes please,” she replied, “a pint of Palmer’s IPA.” Four pints later she left me slumped in a corner and returned to the hall. The end of what I thought could be a wonderful relationship. Later I found out that the pretty blonde came from Chard, so I made a pact with myself I would never, ever date a girl from Chard again.

As well as Big Beat Nights, Mr Alexander brought all the top jazz bands to the Marine, including Acker Bilk, Chris Barber and Kenny Ball and there was an occasional disco with DJ Mr Kazoon, who came over from Weymouth, and, of course, Lyme’s very own Dr Psycho (Dougie Emmett).

But with so many coming to Lyme for these events the inevitable happened and there was a great deal of trouble in the streets, with additional police having to be drafted in at closing time. After one disturbing knife incident the old borough council decided to stop the Big Beat Nights, Mr Alexander was seen no

Once again, the discos were plagued by bad behaviour and rowdiness at turning-out time and the council, much to my relief, decided to ban all discos again. At least I tried.

The council offered the Marine to a number of wouldbe impresarios, the most successful being John Rodd, who also ran the White Hart in Colyford. But stability never really came to the Marine until, after a town referendum, it was decided to hand it over to a trust with financial backing from the council. In the intervening years I’ve stood at the stage and compered dozens of events including the annual town band Christmas concert, at which I was often criticised for my jokes being a bit too near the mark.

The Marine has gone through some difficult times since but now, in my opinion, it is more successful than it’s ever been under the superb direction of Gabby Rabbitts and with a wide-ranging programme of entertainment to suit all tastes. It’s filled the gap left by the temporary (hopefully) closure of the Regent Cinema following the devastating fire three years ago, it even streams live shows at a fraction of the price you would pay in the West End together with a number of live productions and tribute acts.

With a team of willing and enthusiastic volunteers , the fabric of the theatre has been improved measurably after decades of neglect by the council.

So good luck to the Marine. I hope its 125th anniversary will be a rampaging success and, whilst I won’t be tapping any Chard girls on the shoulder ever again, I hope to be tapping my feet in this charming seaside theatre, one of the few still operating in the West Country, for many years to come.

LYME Regis Regatta & Carnival Committee is looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors to its annual May Fete at the Anning Road playing field on Sunday, May 12th.

The fete has become a firm favourite on the Lyme Regis events calendar over the years, especially with residents from the surrounding housing estate.

Gates will open at 1pm and the event will include more than 60 stalls from local organisations, craft stalls, hot food, a bouncy castle, attractions and competitions for all the family!

Entertainment will be provided by local youth organisations, including a display from Lyme Regis Majorettes, and a steel band will also feature on this year’s programme.

Movie magic comes to Lyme to tell story of town’s most famous daughter

NOT since Meryl Streep stood on the end of the Cobb and starred wistfully out to sea in ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ has there been such a buzz of excitement in Lyme Regis.

The camera crews were back in town during March for the filming of ‘Ammonite’, the story of Lyme’s famous fossil hunter Mary Anning and her relationship with a young woman from London, Frances Bell, directed by the acclaimed Francis Lee (‘God’s Own Country’).

Film buffs and celebrity watchers descended on the town to catch a glimpse of Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet (‘Titanic’, ‘The Reader’, ‘The Holiday’), taking the lead role of Anning, and her co-star Saoirse Ronan (‘Lady Bird’, ‘On Chesil Beach’, ‘Mary Queen of Scots’) who plays Frances Bell.

Well known actress Fiona Shaw, who starred in he BBC series ‘Killing Eve’ and ‘Mrs Wilson’, as well as the ‘Harry Potter’ films, will also star in the film.

Lyme stepped back in time for the filming, with 1840s street scenes cleverly created at Bell Cliff and in Coombe Street, complete with Mary Anning’s own fossil shop and a horse and cart. The town’s historic Cobb was given a makeover and welcomed the arrival of tall ship ‘Irene’ (see front cover), with some scenes also being shot out at sea and on local beaches.

Some local residents are also hoping to have their moment in the spotlight after donning period costumes and featuring as extras.

A release date for ‘Ammonite’ has not yet been announced but the film is expected to come out in 2020 and producers are hoping it will be a box office hit.

It is also hoped that the film will shine a light on one of Lyme’s unsung heroes. Mary Anning’s discoveries contributed to important changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth, but she received little acknowledgement during her lifetime, because she was a woman from a working class family.

Lyme Regis Museum, based on the site of Anning’s home, showcases the paleontologist’s amazing life story, and opened the new Mary Anning Wing in July 2017.

MARY Anning was born on May 21st 1799 in Lyme Regis and lived on the site now occupied by Lyme Regis Museum. She was a fossil collector, dealer and paleontologist who has become known around the world for important finds she made in the Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs around Lyme Regis.

Her findings, including the first ichthyosaur skeleton correctly identified, contributed to important changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth.

In the 19th century, many believed Mary’s curiosity and intelligence was the result of an incident in which she miraculously survived being struck by lightning at just 15 months old.

However, she received very little acknowledgment during her lifetime because she was a woman. Mary was not eligible to join the Geological Society of London and did not always receive credit for her work, instead financially struggling and living in poverty for much of her life.

Mary died in 1847, aged 47, from breast cancer. She has since inspired generations of keen fossil hunters and paleontologists, who flock to Lyme Regis and neighbouring Charmouth in their vast numbers every year to seek out their own Jurassic souvenirs.

In 2010 - 163 years after her death - she was finally recognised by the Royal Society as one of the most influential women scientists in British history.

Lyme Regis Museum opened the Mary Anning Wing in her honour in 2017, and houses a vast collection of local fossils. The Mary Anning Rocks campaign was recently launched to honour Lyme’s most famous daughter with a statue in her hometown, as her grave at St Michael’s Parish Church - where many leave fossils and flowers - currently acts as her only memorial.

Lyme Regis Freemasons

Not a secret society but a society with secrets

Guest writer Sophia Moseley offers a rare glimpse inside Lyme’s mysterious Masonic Lodge THE Masons: steeped in symbolic ceremony; it is time to demystify one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies.

When I went along to the Lyme Regis Masonic Temple, there wasn’t even so much as a funny handshake, but I wondered what the history was behind this organisation. There are some who believe there is a link with the world prior to the great flood when Noah built his Ark. Jabal, inventor of geometry and allegedly the first person to build houses with stone and timber, was instructed to inscribe the ‘seven sciences’ onto two stones; one that would not burn (marble) and one that would not sink (lacerus). Following the flood, the marble stone was discovered by Hermes and the craft of masonry flourished from then on.

In the Charter of Freemasonry “the seven liberal sciences are all but one science – that is to say geometry” so given the secular philosophy of the masons, perhaps this pre-Christian link is not so tenuous after all.

The overriding opinion however is that Masonry has descended from the skilled craft of medieval stonemasons to help preserve the reputation of those who had trained and were experts in their field. At a time when the great cathedrals and castles were being built, it was important to prove your credentials when you arrived on site and membership of a recognised group was the simplest method.

The 17th century architect and construction guru Sir Christopher Wren was ‘adopted as a brother’ on Monday 18 May 1691.

The world’s first Grand Lodge was established in London in 1717 and the Book of Constitutions was first published in 1723. In December 1813 the United Grand Lodge of England formed and standardised the group’s rituals and procedures and the 19th century saw a huge expansion of Freemasonry throughout the world.

So what do the 21st century Freemasons stand for today?

The Shakespearean scholar James Halliwell-Phillipps (1820–1889) wrote a detailed account of Freemasonry using the first known Masonic text, the Regius Poem; written by a 14th century west of England priest, it listed the 15 moral duties for masons to follow.

Their philosophy is based on the Three Great Principles of ‘brotherly love’ (showing tolerance and respect for others); ‘relief’ (showing charity and care for all); and ‘truth’ (making the effort to achieve and maintain high moral standards).

The article became known as the Halliwell Manuscript and it claims freemasonry was brought to England during the Dark Ages of the early 10th century during the reign of King Athelstan.

Some notable include Sir Winston Churchill, King George VI, Geoffrey Fisher (Archbishop of Canterbury), Sir Alexander Fleming, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Peter Sellers, Walt Disney, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and William ‘Jack’ Dempsey.

There is however more in the way of documentary evidence from the medieval era with a Lodge of Freemasons being formed in Canterbury in 1429 and an Act being passed in 1548 allowing Freemasons “to practice their craft in any town in England”. This is one of

ending with the Master (Worshipful Master); and 11 ‘non progressive officers’ to ensure the protocol and ceremonies run smoothly and are adhered to.

Then there are the Aprons of Three Degrees; another symbol of their link to the medieval stonemasons. Whilst the original aprons were full length leather garbs, since the mid 19th century they have been made of linen or cotton.

Yes, there is a certain amount of mysticism as to what goes on behind closed doors, but then the ritual dramas carried out are part of the allegorical process that symbolises the importance of the trust and respect that was paid to the organisation when it was first set up centuries ago.

It is also this level of ceremony that sets the organisation apart from any other.

The special hand shake is another sign of their allegiance to the brethren that to a non mason is an inconsequential and unnoticed event, but Mason to Mason it is an instantly recognised gesture of solidarity, trust and friendship.

So when I visited the Montagu Lodge in Lyme Regis I wasn’t sure if there would

be a special password or sign I had to give but far from being secretive, they welcomed me to visit the Temple.

Established by Lord Montagu, Lodge number 665 had its first meeting in the Royal Lion in 1863 but its early years were blighted with financial irregularities and dwindling numbers. Then in 1896 the core group of members got together and built the Masonic Temple at the rear of what is now the Galley Café on Broad Street.

It has gone through a number of upheavals and since World War 1 it was only in 2018 that they were allowed to wear full regalia at the remembrance ceremony. It was the austerity of the Great War that stopped them displaying the grandeur of their ceremonies and then with World War 2 when Freemasons were persecuted by Hitler, over 1 million were killed in concentration camps, their books and regalia were hidden in bank vaults so had Hitler invaded, their identity would have been hidden. Since then the myths grew.

In 2018, following accusations by the police federation of female and ethnic prejudice, there was a national campaign ‘Enough is Enough’ to bring to an

end the suspicions surrounding the Masons refuting all that was being said.

Over the past five years they have tried to become more open, including joining Facebook and Twitter and talking openly about their fundraising efforts. In 2018 LymeOnline reported that they gave £300 to the Lyme Regis Angling Club Youth Section; this was the first time some people had heard about the Lodge, which is surprising given the amount of money they hand out every year, about £2,000 to local good causes and anyone can apply.

Following the closure of the Combined Cadet Force at the Woodroffe School. several members wanted to help and Daniel Buckley, one of the new Army Cadet instructors asked if they would support it. They donated £500.

But now, despite some new members coming through, they are struggling with numbers and their membership is aging. The average age of their members is 70 with the oldest being 96 and the youngest 35.

They are keen for people to join but there is a process applicants must go through and existing members have to be in agreement before they are invited to join. They can then progress through the ranks, learning the rituals for each level, none of which they would divulge to me.

But times are changing and the stonemasons of yesterday are the bookkeepers and shop workers of today. They are making efforts to adapt. including themed Lodges e.g. footballing and hospitality.

So with a more open door policy and a long standing desire to help those in need, whilst they are determined to maintain a certain mystique and retain the secrets of lodge practices, they are also keen to dispel the myths that suggest there is something sinister about the organisation.

They are actively encouraging new membership whilst at the same time protecting their core purpose and principles. Some might say this will lead to a dilution of the beliefs and integrity of the institute but without new members, the society is unlikely to survive which would be a shame given the good they do through fundraising for local causes.

GUITARS On The Beach is the UK’s largest guitar festival, where hundreds of guitarists of all ages and abilities come together to simultaneously play together a selection of well-known songs and form Britain’s biggest band, performing on the beach in Lyme Regis in Dorset.

An all-day programme of entertainment is being planned for the 2019 event, from 10am to 10pm on Saturday, June 15th.

For the highlight of the day, guitarists will be taken back to the 1960s for a beach party, with the main play-along song being Cliff Richard’s 1964 hit ‘On The Beach’.

Organisers commented: “It’s such an obvious song for such a fun day that it has only taken us seven years to realise it!”

Those taking part can play along to the songs performed by a house band of local musicians, performing on a stage on the beach, with numbers also set to include Guitars On The Beach’s signature track, Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’, which this year marks its the 60th anniversary of the singer’s death.

JAZZ Jurassica launches this year’s bumper festival programme with gutsy gospel, blistering blues, bad ass brass and sassy swing.

Organisers say it is their most ambitious and diverse programme yet, bringing topnotch music to the town over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

For the very first time, the festival includes gospel in the form of the Powerhouse Gospel Choir for a dazzling finale at Marine Theatre. They bring a powerful brand of gutsy gospel singing for a foot-stomping exuberant performance.

Dubbed the new Eric Clapton, blues wizard Laurence Jones promises another electrifying live show. With his killer riffs and scorching solos, his new band is set to ignite the British blues circuit.

Meanwhile Kick Ass Brass rips it up with hot horns in honour of funk legends Tower of Power, James Brown and Earth Wind and Fire.

Starting in the morning 10am, there will be a laid back atmosphere with local and young performers demonstrating their talents.

In their only UK appearance, Norwegian big band, Equinor, celebrate the king of jazz, Duke Ellington, in a concert devoted to his sparky brand of swing.

The programme will build up to the play-along section at 4pm, followed by a headline set by popular local band DeltaTango7.

Festival favourites, Matt Carter and Leigh Coleman, will this year make their big stage debut for “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” their jazzy re-interpretation of the Stevie Wonder songbook.

EATING OUT The Harbour Inn S ITTING on the veranda as the sun goes down, sipping a chilled Chablis with the sea lapping over the sandy beach just a few steps away, you could be in any trendy bar in some exotic holiday location.

But this is the Harbour Inn in Lyme Regis - trendy in its own right with a plethora of new eating out venues opening in recent times -where owners Sue Steward and Mark Oldfield are preparing to celebrate their 15th year in the resort and whose reputation has done much to establish Lyme as a must-go-to food destination.

Before flying off for a two-week break in Sri Lanka, ahead of another hectic summer season, Sue and her staff have been giving Lyme’s most popular seafront restaurant and bar a refreshed look.

Adding a very special touch, the bar and restaurant walls are adorned with an array of spectacular mixed media works and paintings by Sue’s artist daughter, Julie Oldfield.

Before acquiring The Harbour, after moving to the West Country from Derbyshire in the 1990s, Sue bought the Honiton Wine Bar, which was run by son Mark, as well as taking over the Awliscombe Inn. The Harbour was a pretty tired seaside pub when they took it over in 2004 and, over the years, they have extended the premises, adding a restaurant, maximising

the attractive veranda and securing a sitting out area on the beach which is literally just a few steps from the bar.

Sue and Mark soon recognised that their position so close to the sea was their greatest asset and set about building their restaurant trade, gaining a reputation over the years for good quality cuisine at reasonable prices, using local ingredients, especially fresh fish right off the harbour trawlers.

That reputation is still as strong today despite the increase in competition from new food outlets in Lyme in recent years.

For many, The Harbour is still the favoured location for celebrating big occasions and events and some of their dishes, especially Sue’s very own fish pie, have near iconic status.

Separate lunchtime and evening a la carte menus are available with chief chef Daryl Moss and his kitchen staff - Andy Bensen, Ben Jones and Cameron Moss preparing daily specials using local produce where possible.

Occasional music nights at The Harbour are always popular with its close proximity to the beach and the bar is a regular haunt for the seafaring fraternity, including the unofficial watering hole for Lyme Regis Gig Club.

Special menus are also prepared for specific events such as Valentine’s Day

and Burns’ Night but Sue and her staff consider those who just want to take in the seaside atmosphere and enjoy a drink on the veranda, or in the sitting out area, just as important as those enjoying their meals in the restaurant.

Sue said: “We have a loyal clientele but we are conscious that there is increasing competition in the hospitality trade in Lyme Regis and to celebrate our 15th year in the town we have redecorated the bar and restaurant and will be launching a new menu as Easter and the summer approaches.

NTONIO’S Trattoria in Lyme Regis has recently opened for its 25th season - surely one of the longest-running restaurants in town and certainly one of the most popular!

The Church Street restaurant is Italian charm personified, right down to the chequered red and green tablecloths. EATING OUT The Pilot Boat

F

OLLOWING a near £2million investment by the owners, Palmers Brewery of Bridport, The Pilot Boat, one of Lyme’s traditional public houses, has been transformed into one of the most popular and expansive eating-out venues in the area.

With a 100-seat air-conditioned restaurant, spacious bar and attractive terrace, the new-look Pilot Boat is approaching its first anniversary, having already established a reputation as a must-visit destination for those looking for a little bit more than run-of-the-mill pub grub and lively entertainment.

The Pilot Boat is being run as a family business by licensees Robin and Angela Collyns with son Ben as general manager. Robin and Angela are highly experienced in the hospitality trade, having trained with Berni Inns in the 1980s and having managed a number of successful pubs and restaurants in the past.

Reflecting on their first year at the Pilot, Robin said they were “delighted” with the support they had received, especially from local people who were regulars of the old-style pub and had been slightly sceptical about the extent of the refurbishment.

He said: “The new Pilot is very different from the old one but we hope we have retained some of the values and traditions that made it one of Lyme’s most popular pubs over the years. We have listened to what local people want and have tried to create a community venue as well as a great place to eat and have a drink.”

To that end, Robin has introduced a weekly quiz night with a £100 jackpot, proving to be very popular with the locals, as well as allowing the bar area to be used for a craft market on Sunday mornings and a venue for other local events.

Robin’s team has also organised a programme of music nights on Wednesdays and Fridays featuring many of the most popular bands and acts in the area, including house acts Grace (Gillan) & Jake and Adam Sweet on alternate Wednesday evenings, with guests bands on Fridays, alongside special bar promotions.

For those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, the Pilot is also staging classic music nights on a Sunday, starting with all-round entertainer Simon Hawkins.

Adding in the bar areas and the terrace, the Pilot has more than 180 covers which makes it one of the biggest eating-out venues for many miles and there have been times, especially during the summer, when every seat has been taken.

The California-style service has proved popular but Robin is keen to stress that daily specials are always available and local, fresh produce is always sourced where possible.

The Pilot opens at 8am seven days a week for traditional breakfasts and has also recently introduced American-style breakfasts with a choice of juice, three fried eggs, three rashers of bason and three hash browns or a stack of American pancakes, two rashers of crispy bacon and maple syrup with unlimited coffee or tea, all for £10.

SCAPE the hustle and bustle of the town centre and enjoy a hearty homecooked meal at Uplyme’s hidden gem, the Black Dog Tea Room, where customers come back time and time again for owner Rod and Sonia’s generous homemade fayre and loose leaf tea.

Coffee roasters have been carefully selected to provide the highest quality blends and there is also a large range of organic teas. The bar also stocks superb wines, West Country produced artisan gins and vodka, quality beers and local ales.

The Black Dog Tea Room is dog-friendly so a walk up the River Lim with your furry friend can end with a lovely cup of tea and a cake, snack or a filling lunch with Rod and Sonia serving up generous helpings, all lovingly made by hand and excellently presented.

Nearly everything is made on the premises - bread, rolls, cakes and scones - and they use locally-sourced produce where possible. The bacon for the Somerset brie and bacon rolls comes from Colyton Butchers, the eggs used in the roasted pepper, mushroom and cherry tomato quiche are free range and come from just up the road, and the toast used in Rod's Rustic Rarebit is made on site using flour hand-milled at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis.

With need for more space, Rod and Sonia have built a summerhouse as an extension to the light and airy tea room, with the idea that it can be hired out for meetings or private lunches. It looks out over the landscaped garden, where you can also enjoy lunch on those warmer days, and has a lovely view of the Lym Valley.

The Black Dog Tea Room is on Lyme Road heading towards Lyme Regis and is open every day except Wednesdays, when Rod and Sonia can instead be found walking their two dogs, Martha and Jorge, along the east beach towards Charmouth, Martha chasing the seagulls and Jorge meeting new friends to play with, and Rod and Sonia enjoying the walk and sea air.

UCKED away at the historic Town Mill - the ‘artisan’ quarter of Lyme Regis - The Courtyard Café offers a variety of cooked breakfasts and wholesome lunches, homemade cakes and afternoons teas, alongside morning leaf teas and fresh coffee.

Owned by chef Laura, who has 25-plus years experience, all food served at The Courtyard Café is freshly made, honest and locally sourced, Fair Trade and organic where possible. Everything is cooked on the premises with love, care, attention to detail and nutrition in mind.

Meat is supplied from Colyton Butchers or local farms, vegetables and salad are seasonal and local when possible from Trill Farm or the owners’ own gardens, and fish is caught in Lyme Bay. The coffee served is locally roasted and carefully sourced from The Coffee Factory at Seaton Junction, and the tea is hand-blended, organic and Fair Trade from Teas Me in Exeter. The Town Mill’s own flour is also put to good use to make bread, cakes, pastries and scones.

The Courtyard Café can also cater for special dietary requirements and offers catering for private functions, with space for up to 26 people in the cosy café which overlooks the River Lim. The environmentally-conscious café recycles 80 per cent of its waste. Bottles, tins, plastic, paper and cardboard go back to The Bottle Man, and raw food waste, coffee grout and tea leaves go to Trill Farm Organics to grow vegetables, herbs and salad.

The menu changes seasonally with plenty to choose from for vegetarians, vegans and gluten free. Check out the fish specials, such as Lyme Bay gurnard fillet, chive mash, Trill Farm chard and wild garlic pesto. With so many good suppliers on their doorstep, The Millside prides itself on a good quality Sunday roast, which is very popular, so booking is advised.

There’s also a selection of aperitifs, including Dorset Gin Fizz made with local gin, elderflower cordial and prosecco, and the local award-winning Lyme Bay Grapefruit Gin served with Fever Tree Tonic, and a fabulous wine list to complement your meal.

ENNY Black Cafe is situated in what was once the town's mail sorting room.

Tucked behind the Post Office on Broad Street, this vintage-inspired tearoom and courtyard garden is named after the world's first adhesive postage stamp.

The friendly family-run eatery is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4.30pm, serving breakfasts, light lunches, cakes and bakes, cream teas, fresh soup and delicious homemade special dishes.

Using wholesome, locally sourced ingredients, meals are made from scratch on the premises, and owners Ben and Nicky are happy to make tweaks to suit different diets.

Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are available, including soya versions of the cafe's wide range of popular milkshakes, and new on the menu this spring, yummy vegan and vegetarian breakfasts.

O seaside resort is complete without fish and chips and there is certainly no lacking in places where you can buy England’s signature dish in Lyme Regis. One of the most popular in Lyme is The Fisherman’s Wife, situated just a few steps from the resort’s famous Cobb harbour.

For first-time visitors to Lyme, buying their fish and chips and then sitting on the Cobb to eat them and watching all the boating activity in the harbour is very often the highlight of their stay.

On TripAdvisor, The Fisherman’s Wife has an 86 per cent rating for very good or excellent and a number of reviews refer to it as serving “the best fish and chips in Lyme”.

But The Fisherman’s Wife is no run-of-the-mill fish and chip shop, as alongside the cod and chips, fish cakes and burgers, one of its best sellers is hand-dived Lyme Bay scallops served with garlic butter. They also offer a large range of gluten free options.

The Fisherman’s Wife is run by husband and wife Anthony Shuttleworth and Rachel Forsey, who are very keen fundraisers for a number of charities, especially the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, their premises being just a stone’s throw from the lifeboat station.

Their children Keiran, 12, Harry, 6, and three-year-old Bella also support the cause by handing out scallop shells for a donation for the RNLI, raising £650 over the past year.

The family also plans to host a charity event for still birth charity SANDS over the Easter weekend.
