A WARM seaside welcome to the players and supporters of Clyst Val ley who visit the Davey Fort today top of the Stitch2Print Devon and Exeter League Premier Division following their 5-1 opening home victory over Dawlish United.

Following the difculty experienced during the Covid-19, we were forced to withdraw our third eleven, Lyme Rovers, from the Perry Street League. We hope we will be in a position to revive the Rovers next year. I am pleased to report, however, that our youth section is thriving again with three age groups competing in the East Devon League and an Under 8s side. See our report on page 10. And fnally, those of you who like to look at teams from the past take a peek on page 9 to see if you can name all the players. Te frst one to bring the correct answers to me during today’s match will win a £20 bar voucher.

Having dropped down from the Devon League, Clyst are among the favourites to win the Premier title this year. Tey will provide stif opposition for our frst team who opened their account on Monday with a disappointing 3-0 defeat against neighbours Colyton. Although we hit the woodwork four times and missed a couple of golden chances, we were well beaten by the Tan ners who looked by far the fter team and are also likely to be among the front-runners this season on this display, Te Ressies also made an inauspicious start on Saturday when they were thrashed 8-0 by Broadclyst 1sts who sit on top the Division Tree table. Today, the Reserves are away to Seaton Town, always a game to savour afer some massive tussles in years past. Before the game on Saturday the club marked the frst day of the new season by ofcially opening their new 63-seater grandstand by naming it afer Kenneth “Cooey” Hitchcock , a club stalwart for more than 60 years whose untimely death earlier this year has brought great sadness to the Davey Fort. In recent months the club has experi enced and increasing amount of anti-so cial behavior and criminal damage at the Davey Fort. Incidents have included drug taking, skateboarding on the club house roof and defecating in the bank between the club and the Charmouth Road car park. We also sufered a minor break-in where a sum of money was sto len and three charity boxes emptied. The matter was reported to the police who are keeping a regular eye on our premises as part of their regular patrols. The club has also been forced to install a sophisticated CCTV system with eight cameras covering the whole site.

The kitchen extension has proved to be a real boom for the club as we are now able to cater for functions as well as our own needs. It’s a far cry from the old tea hut!

The project to improve social and play ing facilities at the Davey Fort took four years and concluded with the resurfac ing of the car park. Other improvements included: A new kitchen extension A 63-seater grandstand Widening of the pitch area by 2 metres Improved drainage Renovation of the changing facilities

The club now has some of the best facili ties in the area at our level in the football pyramid and further improvements to the playing surface is planned for the near future.

COSTLY BUT NECESSARY

Davey Fort Development Project Fortify – the club’s £140,000 development programme – is all but complete

The grandstand means our supporters no longer don’t have brace the inclem ent weather that blows in from the sea. Built into a side of a clif, the Davey Fort has been subjected to serious drainage issues over the years but these have been reduced, leading to less games being postponed due to the pitch being waterlogged. Further improvements to the drainage system are planned the future. These improvements were made possi ble by a generous £100,000 grant from Lyme Regis Town Council for which we are extremely grateful. We are especially grateful for the help and co-operation of town clerk John Wright and Cllr Richard Doney, the council’s liaison member, who has now become a keen supporter of the Seasiders, attending most first team home games. The club had to raise £36,000 as our contribution to the joint funding which we managed to achieve despite our finances being severely afected by Covid. It costs £30,000 a year to run LRFC and adding £12,000 to this every year put a strain on our finances but increased fundraising and opening up the club for car parking in the summer enabled us to meet our target.

Afer retiring from his job as part of the works team at Lyme Regis Town Council, Ken visited the club virtually every day of his life. Ken, a life-member, also played a crucial role in Lyme’s twinning arrangement with the Normandy Club, US Creully, with reciprocal visits having been going on for 40 years, and was much respected by our French counterparts. Before unveiling ceremony, club president Philip Evans MBE paid tribute to Ken’s con tribution over such a long time, saying that no one embodied the club’s moto – “Once A Seasider …Always a Seasider” – more than Cooey. Pip also spoke about the fnancial difculties caused by the loss of revenue due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Ken’s eforts in manning car parking at the Davey Fort during the

PLAYERS past and present gathered at the Davey Fort on the morning of Saturday, August 20 to honour one of our greatest servants, Kenneth “Cooey” Hitchcock, by naming our new grandstand afer him. Ken started playing for the Seasiders as a teenager and over the years became one of the biggest characters in local football. Some of his antics - on and of the pitch - have gone down in the folklore of Lyme Regis Football Club. Te father of three foot ball-mad boys - Andrew, Gerard and Mathew – who all played for the Seasiders at one point, Ken served on the commitee and then took over as unofcial caretaker, a role he fulflled for decades, helping behind the bar when needed and keeping the Davey Fort clubhouse shipshape. He was also an avid supporter and at tended most of Lyme’s match es, home and away, never shy of ofering advice to referees!

Special guests at the unveiling ceremony were the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Michaela Ellis, accompanied by her consort, husband Alan, and Neil Anthony, secretary of the Devon and Exeter League. Life members David Cozens MBE and Les Loveridge were also present as well as a number of former players. A portrait of Ken has also been erected in the clubhouse at “Cooey’s Corner”, his regular place at the bar where many tales of past matches were deliberated over. Te players have also paid for a seat outside the clubhouse in Ken’s memory, an indication of how much he was respect by all who knew him.

summer, virtually single-hand ed, kept the club solvent. Last summer he raised £17,000. He said the Hitchcock family was synonymous with the Lyme Regis Football Club and he paid tribute to the years of service given to the club by Ken’s wife Bety As well as a nameplate on the grandstand, Ken’s family unveiled a plaque on the rear of the stand acknowledging his 60 years of service to the club. Bety helped to run the kitchen at the Davey Fort for many years and now organises monthly bingo sessions as well as matchday rafes. She has also taken on the role of organising volunteers to man the car park this summer.

Son Gerard played for Lyme for many years before taking over as manager of the Reserves and then the frst team. Gerard also served as club vice-chairman for several years and has now succeeded Howard Larcombe, who held the post for a record 14 years.

THIS is only the second visit by Clyst Valley 1st team to the Davey Fort. Te previous encounter in February 2019 saw Lyme run out 3-1 winners in the Devon & Exeter Premier with goals from Cody Bowditch, Fred Parsons and Ben Vine (pen).
