Center’s transition to an emergency response center, meeting the basic human need of providing meals to our community quickly became a priority. The logistics of producing, pack-

ing, storing and distributing over 10,000 meals each week is no easy task and we could not have pulled it off without the support of community partners who are willing to do whatever it takes, partners like Mike and Karla Rompel. Within a

few days of being asked to help, Mike secured and delivered a 30’ freezer container and various kitchen supplies from his

own stores and local hotels for food production and storage.

Mike and Karla truly honor God by the way they live and give their lives away in service to Him. Their partnership enables

us to work tirelessly to provide programs that strengthen the

physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness of our most vulner-

able community residents. Together, we are beacons of light and hope in the community.

What started as a Grade 5 design project in sustainability and gardening evolved to include ALL of the Elementary grades and resulted in the beautiful rainbow of container gardens hanging along the campus fence in the school garden.

“The students created a design that made the best use of the water available,” explained Jones. “The cartons have pour

spouts, so their design staggered the cartons in a way that

when you pour water in the top row of containers, the water drips down and waters the rows below.” Ingenious!

They also selected plants that were hearty and edible, and for

which seeds could be easily obtained in the middle of a global pandemic. They selected green onions, cucumbers, peas, and hearty varieties of lettuce, all of which also have

short roots making them ideal for growing in a container.

It became a very large project that was a lot of work for one

grade, especially with changes in class scheduling because of the pandemic. It soon became an Elementary school project that produced a beautiful, sustainable, rainbow garden that they can all be proud of.

I first met Mike Rompel when he contacted our organization to offer his help with our Hotels for Heroes program which provided free hotel rooms for frontline workers like doctors, nurses, police and fire, among others. These rooms were given to these workers as a place to safely isolate away from their families during the height of the pandemic and, for each room night, Heroes were provided with the option to order a free pizza courtesy of

Domino’s- a special mahalo that demonstrated Mike’s willingness to help and desire to serve his community.

That singular act of aloha drove me to recruit him for HLTA’s Board of Directors, and he has been a blessing for us ever since. HLTA is the largest visitor industry trade organization in Hawai‘i.

In the time since joining HLTA, Mike has been a key member of our government affairs and membership

committees and has strongly supported HLTA-sponsored food drives, scholarship efforts, and our Visitor Public

Safety Conferences. He has shown time and again, through his work with HLTA and as a member of Island Pacific Academy’s Board of Directors, that he is deeply committed to improving the wellbeing of our community and nothing can stop him from making significant and lasting impacts in this regard.

Aloha — The great thing about aloha is, you can’t fake it.

When I was traveling back and forth from San Francisco, I

rented a car at Alamo. I had been renting so many cars for me and others, I lost track of what fuel option I chose. I returned my car with a full tank of gas and the girl told me that I had prepaid. I had said to her, oh, I didn’t realize that, but she

could just refund me. She told me how they couldn’t do that and asked me if I didn’t understand the contract I signed. Of course I walked away pissed, and she just smirked and said

“Aloha.” Of course I ended up finding out that in Hawaii it is illegal for rental car companies to charge you for gas you don’t use… Did she really mean “Aloha?”

Aloha — It means more than hello and goodbye. It is both

those words, but transferred with loving kindness from one

person to the next. It is why you won’t see a business hand-

shake in Hawai’i as often as you see an embrace (Pre Covid).

For our company, we should treat each other with Aloha, and expect our customers to treat our team with the same loving kindness.

This was a Quonset Hut store we built to feed military troops training atop

Mauna Kea on Hawai`i Island in 2015. We made

deliveries on a four-wheeler for a couple years and hit a

couple weeks of 50k.

Our Waikiki store inside the Hyatt Place. The potential for additional stores inside other storefronts, where we have a captive audience, is unlimited. Here, 400 hotel rooms produce a minimum of 10k each week.
