Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone as the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation hosts its 2019 Empire Ball.

Nothing is more important to our administration than protecting the health and wellness of all our residents. As the largest and most comprehensive research center devoted to finding a cure for diabetes, DRI is a terrific partner in our efforts to ensure the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The Institute has already made great progress in achieving its mission, developing a groundbreaking cell-based therapy to combat this disease and continuing to persevere in its endeavors to produce even more cutting-edge treatments. I applaud the Foundation and its Real Estate Division for their significant contributions to the field of diabetes research and for their inspiring philosophy of teamwork and collaboration. I join together with all those gathered in celebrating this organization, whose commitment to improving health and helping those in need resonates so deeply with New Yorkers.

Welcome to the 2019 Empire Ball. This signature event, organized and attended by New York City’s real estate, finance and construction industries, has been going strong for 36 years. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. To date, thanks to your generosity and dedication, we have raised more than $38 million for diabetes research!

Tonight, we recognize three outstanding individuals – our honorees Simon Wasserberger, Robert Scheinman and Mark Gregorio – as well as our event co-chairs, committee, and sponsors, who have gone above and beyond to support the mission of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) and the Foundation.

This evening, many buildings along the NYC skyline were illuminated in sparkling blue to celebrate our collective efforts to “Unlock the Cure.” Special thanks to our lighting partners for being involved in this one-of-a-kind celebration.

Another special component (and tradition) of the Ball found many amongst this group traveling to the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami to get a firsthand look at how your contributions are being invested. They learned how DRI scientists have been able to advance a number of promising initiatives to the clinical phase of testing and that the DRI is gearing up for several new patient studies that will address the unique challenges posed by the immune system.

As one of the largest and most comprehensive research centers dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks.

Simon Wasserberger runs the New York region for EQ Office. He is responsible for all leasing, operations, and value creation efforts, and works with Blackstone to pursue future investments in the region.

Prior to joining Equity Office, Wasserberger served as managing director at L&L Holding Co. in New York, where he led several successful redevelopment projects including 390 Madison Ave. in midtown Manhattan, 150 Fifth Ave. in the Flatiron district and 222 Broadway in lower Manhattan. His track record also includes positions with CBRE and Tishman Speyer properties.

Bobby has been active in the construction industry for over 35 years. He started his career working together with his father in their family business.

As a Principal of J.T. Magen & Company, Inc. since 2007 he has strived to make the firm one of the preeminent privately owned construction companies in the United States. He sits on the executive committee and acts as the Principal in Charge for the company’s most important clients.

His primary focus is maintaining industry relationships, ensuring that the firm’s clients receive the best possible service and result for their construction projects.

He has had the privilege to service and oversee projects for some of the nation’s most influential and well-known organizations in the legal services, finance and banking, institutional, not-for-profit, TAMI, hospitality, education, and retail sectors.

Bobby is equally enthusiastic about his philanthropic duties as his career.

He is dedicated to a diverse selection of charities. He is a member of the Executive Board for the American Friends of Rabin Medical Center and is a Chair of their golf fundraiser. He sits on the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Greater New York. He is a committee member for the AHRC golf event and the North Shore Autism Circle’s Holes for Hope annual day of golf, hosted at Engineers Country Club where Bobby served as President for three years.

In addition to serving on the above Boards, through his corporate affiliation with J.T. Magen, Bobby generously supports the following organizations – AFRMC, Alzheimer’s Association of NY, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Bowery Residents Committee, Cooke Center, Creative Art Works, Education Through Music, Hope & Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund, Melanoma Research Foundation, North Shore Autism Circle, St. Francis Food Pantry, Association of Real Estate Women, National Tourette Syndrome Association, Boy Scouts of America and United Jewish Federation.

In his personal life, Bobby is married to his wife Susan for 39 years. They have two terrific daughters- Taylor, who is married to Luke and Claudia, who is married to Jason. Sports have always been a big part of his life. He is an avid golfer, tennis and pickle ball player.

MARK GREGORIO President TEI Group

Mark graduated with honors from William E. Grady High School, a technical school serving the New York region’s power and service companies.

Finding the undergraduate curriculum a repeat of what he had already been exposed to in high school, Mark left college and went to work for the New York City Transit Authority’s Power Division where, at the age of 22, he became the youngest foreman in the Authority’s history.

In 1985, Mark joined Millar Elevator Industries as an apprentice, and, within three years, had attained the rank of foreman. He was responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining over 300 elevators between 59th Street and 42nd Street, east of Fifth Avenue.

In 1994, after Millar Industries was acquired by Schindler Elevator, Mark left to take a minority partnership with Transel Elevator, a small elevator service company which, at the time, had 15 employees and 120 elevators under contract.

Today, doing business as TEI Group, and headquartered in Long Island City, the company is one of the largest independent vertical transportation companies in New York City, employing over 250 employees, many of whom Mark has worked side-by-side with since he was a mechanic at Millar and Schindler.

TEI clients now include the most respected developers, property owners and management companies, whose portfolios carry some of the most prestigious commercial and residential addresses in New York City.

Mark believes in, and promotes within TEI, a work ethic that sometimes gets lost amid present culture’s distractions. He has stated that he gets up every day, intent on leading his firm to be the best at what it does, building and servicing New York’s vertical transportation industry.

In 2010, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation bestowed its 2010 Camillo Ricordi Humanitarian Award on Mark Gregorio for his efforts on their behalf. Fun fact, Mark is a registered “46’er”, having climbed all 46 mountain peaks in NYS over 4,000 feet.

FACTS ABOUT DIABETES

Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. According to the CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control) National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2014, cases of diabetes have increased almost 13% over the last four years (29.1 million in 2012 vs. 25.8 million in 2010). Below is a summary of the latest diabetes statistics included in the CDC’s report. You can view the full report at http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pubs/statsreport14/national-diabetes-report-web.pdf.

How Many People Have Diabetes?

• Amputations • In 2010, about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes.

• About 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations among people aged 20 years or older occur in people with diagnosed diabetes.

New Cases of Diabetes in Adults and Children

• Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemic Crisis • In 2011, about 282,000 emergency room visits for adults aged 18 years or older had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) as the first-listed diagnosis and diabetes as another diagnosis.

• In 2011, about 175,000 emergency room visits for people of all ages had hyperglycemic (high blood sugar levels) crisis as the first-listed diagnosis.

• 29.1 million people, or 9.3% of the U.S. population, have diabetes, including 8.1 million people who have diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed (All ages, 2012).

• Diabetes impacts all social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.

• Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, affecting approximately 1.5 million people.

• Among people 20 years or older, 1.7 million were newly-diagnosed with diabetes (2012) – approximately 4,657 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each day.

• About 208,000 people younger than 20 years of age have been diagnosed with diabetes (type 1 or type 2). This represents 0.25% of all people in this age group (2012).

• The incidence of type 1 diabetes is significantly higher in people under age 20. According to a 2008-2009 study of 23,525 youths with diabetes, 78% were newly-diagnosed with type 1 diabetes vs.

22% who were newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.*

Incidence of Diabetes Complications

• Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputation, among other conditions.

• Heart Disease, Heart Attack and Stroke • In 2003-2006, after adjusting for population age differences, cardiovascular disease death rates were about 1.7 times higher among adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes.

• In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for heart attack were 1.8 times higher among adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes than among adults without diagnosed diabetes.

• In 2010, after adjusting for population age differences, hospitalization rates for stroke were 1.5 times higher among adults with diagnosed diabetes aged 20 years or older compared to those without diagnosed diabetes.

• Blindness and Eye Problems • In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 4.2 million (28.5%) people had diabetic retinopathy, damage to the small blood vessels in the retina that may result in loss of vision.

• In 2005-2008, of adults with diabetes aged 40 years or older, 655,000 (4.4%) had advanced diabetes retinopathy that could lead to severe vision loss.

• Kidney Disease • Diabetes was listed as the primary cause of kidney failure in 44% of all new cases in 2011.

• In 2011, 49,677 people of all ages began treatment for kidney failure due to diabetes; and a total of 228,924 people of all ages with kidney failure were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant.

Diabetes is a Deadly Disease

• Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. In 2010, diabetes was mentioned as a cause of death in a total of 234,051 death certificates.

• Diabetes may be underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.

The Cost of Diabetes

• In 2012, the total cost of diabetes in the U.S. was $245 billion.

•O f that, $176 billion accounted for direct medical costs.

After adjusting for age and sex differences, average medical expenditures among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than people without diabetes.

• $69 billion was attributed to indirect costs (disability, work loss, premature death).

More About Diabetes

• Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to create or effectively use its own insulin, which is produced by islet cells found in the pancreas. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels – providing energy to body cells and tissues.

• Without insulin, the body’s cells would be starved, causing dehydration and destruction of body tissue.

• People with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump to survive.

• Many people with type 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose by following a healthy meal plan and a program of regular physical activity, losing excess weight, and taking medications.

Medications for each individual with diabetes will often change during the course of the disease. Insulin also is commonly used to control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.

The DRI is now building upon these promising outcomes through its BioHub strategy, a multidisciplinary, three-pronged approach for addressing the major challenges that stand in the way of a cure: eliminate the need for anti-rejection drugs, reset the immune system to block autoimmunity, and develop an unlimited supply of insulin-producing cells.
