Hampton House to Welcome
Parent Handbook

Welcome
Boarding life is not just about the relationship between staff and pupils; parents and guardians play a key role in the development of their children. It is essential that they work in partnership with the Boarding Housemaster (BHM) and the House team to ensure that their son/ward gains the maximum possible from their Boarding experience here at LVS Ascot.
Familiarity of parents and guardians with House procedures is crucial in helping to establish and reinforce important structures. These relationships, built between home and House, are the necessary foundation for the smooth running of the Boarding community. Similarly, when pupils have a clear knowledge of the expectations and standards required, they can both actively contribute more positively and gain more from the opportunities available
This handbook explains how Hampton House systems meet the highest requirements laid down by the Government through the National Minimum Standards for Boarding schools (September 2022)[1].
This handbook will be of particular use to students, parents, and guardians as it outlines key features in the day-to-day life of Hampton House, as well as providing contact details of key House staff
In September 2018, the Pastoral community at LVS Ascot changed the names of the Houses to distance us from the alcohol brands that we were previously linked to, in our case, Guinness.
Situated in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, Hampton Court Palace is now known as one of the secondary British Royal Palaces and draws a strong connection to our Royal Patronage at LVS Ascot. It was the favourite residence of King Henry VIII in the 16th Century and much beloved by all British monarchs for the next 200 years; King George II was the last British monarch to reside at Hampton Court Palace.
The beautiful Tudor and Baroque styled building along with its famous Chapel Royal, gardens, and maze is now a major tourist attraction and well worth a visit!

House Ethos
(Play the Game!)

The above are words the boys themselves have used to describe Hampton House

Welcome from the House Master of Hampton House
Welcome to Hampton House! Hampton House is a Boarding House for boys in Years 5-11. It provides accommodation for up to 55 boys, often from over 20 different countries, together with the Boarding Housemaster’s (BHM) House attached and flats for the Senior House Assistant (SHA) and Graduate Boarding Assistant (GBA) or Resident Tutor (RT). Our aim is to make the House as homely as we can; with every effort made to create a happy, relaxed, family atmosphere in a shared community. Our friendly and experienced resident staff are assisted by non-resident staff and a Prefect team who help everyone to settle into the House quickly and with the smooth day-to-day running of Hampton House.
I will save more from me for the final words at the end of this handbook. I look forward to meeting you for the first time or welcoming you back if you are already a part of the Hampton family!

Prefects
Hampton House has a group of up to eight Senir Boys that act as Prefects. Their duties are to aid in the day-to-day running of the House, especially regarding waking up the House and putting the boys to bed. They also head up committees and organise inter-House events as well as activities afterschool and at the weekend. The Prefects are not allowed to give out sanctions, but they are expected to inform duty staff of who is not meeting the House’s expectations. However, they can give out rewards as long as cleared and logged by a member of staff.

Introduction to Boarding
Boarding at LVS Ascot is based on the following principles:
• The development of the whole person, physically, spiritually, intellectually, morally, socially, and emotionally in a conducive atmosphere of positive praise and reinforcement
• The promotion of mutual respect and the right to be treated as an individual.
• The right of the individual to not suffer any form of abuse.
• An equality of opportunities provided to all, regardless of socio-economic or cultural background.
• The right to privacy.
• Fostering supportive links with parents and guardians
In addition to addressing physical needs and a sense of security and safety, Hampton House seeks to contribute to its Boarders’development in their sense of belonging, their self-esteem, self-respect, sense of belonging and self-realisation. House staff are and should be advocates for the boarders in their care.
Pupil voice is taken seriously, and the House also promotes leadership qualities.
Aims, objectives and expectations
The aims and objectives of each Boarding House will differ in practice depending on the age range and circumstance of the House, but all will seek to:
• Create a safe, secure, and comfortable environment for all Boarders.
• Provide a range of experiences and opportunities and conditions that will encourage self-development: physically, spiritually, intellectually, morally, socially, and emotionally.
• Develop an open and trusting ethos in which Boarders are confident that they will be treated with respect as an individual.
• Create an atmosphere which is non-conducive to any form of bullying and where it would have difficulty flourishing.
• Develop a sense of responsibility for self, others, and the environment.
• Develop Boarders’qualities of leadership and the ability to work as part of a team.
• Encourage supportive relationships between Boarders, staff, parents, and guardians.

The aims work towards the School Aim –
“Inspiring Independence”.
We are a modern, inclusive, and self-determining school, driven by essential behaviours, sharing knowledge and skills in a culture of trust within an adaptive environment.
Hampton House provides accommodation for up to 55 boys, together with resident staff. Accommodation for boys is in the form of shared dormitories. To ensure our aim of creating a happy and relaxed atmosphere, a lot of careful consideration goes into allocating boys into dormitories and there are changes to whom boys share a dorm with, within their Year group as we move through the academic year Year 11 Prefects share their own flat Since they make up the Prefect cohort; it has facilities for cooking, making refreshments and relaxing. In addition to the flat, there are two large and one small common rooms. One has a pool table, working area and a printer; whilst the other large common room provides facilities for making hot drinks or snacks and watching television. The smaller common area acts as a private study area and a place where the older students in the House can have some peace and quiet if they wish.

As in any such community, certain basic rules and routines are necessary, to ensure the freedom and security of every boy within the House These may be different or greater in number than boys are used to at home but are essential to live as one large community. These may be summarised but are in no way exhausted by the list below:
Every Boy is expected:
o To be polite and courteous to other members of the House, to other members of the School and to members of staff.
o To be tolerant of others and to respect the feelings of others.
o To be clean at all times and smartly dressed at the times that require it.
o To be punctual, both in physical attendance and in handing in work.
o To take pride in belonging to Hampton House, accepting responsibility for helping to keep it clean, tidy, and welcoming to visitors.
o To participate in everything to the best of their ability
o To challenge themselves to fulfil their potential.
o To work hard for the best of the House.
o To put others first and ensure they are selfless in their thoughts and actions.

Celebrating BritishValues within Hampton House
Hampton House seeks to promote an all-inclusive community whereby all our Boarders can live and develop in a safe and nurturing environment, regardless of their culture or religious beliefs. We actively encourage our Boarders to embrace British Values, through our range of exciting House trips and events. Boarders are asked to adopt and follow the clear expectations and customs that British citizens are expected to embrace and incorporate into their own daily lives. We wish to instil a sense of pride and respect within the House, by offering our Boarders a range of opportunities for self-enrichment and fulfilment, through visits to local and national places of cultural importance. Boarders will learn what‘good citizens’are by following and respecting the rules of the House. They should work with the House in its ambition towards living in a fair, democratic, and a homely environment Boarders are given the opportunity to develop into caring and confident citizens, who are educated in the modern British way of life. Hampton House welcomes cultural diversity while taking pride in its strong sense of Britishness. Our Boarders learn to live together respectfully and peacefully. They are given the chance to become confident and well-informed leaders, through our Prefect system. They are given every equal opportunity to celebrate their cultural backgrounds and to take full advantage of what is on offer regardless of their race or religion

Parental/Guardian Permission forWeekend Leave
Boarders will be asked to confirm their plans for the weekend on a Wednesday by bedtime. Parents/Guardians are then required to inform us via a leave request on Orah that their son/ward will be out for the coming weekend.
There will be a weekly weekend email sent on either a Thursday or Friday. This email will also include any notices for the coming week, updates on events that have happened since the last email If parents wish to allow their son to leave the school site to stay with a friend, or in the care of adults other than themselves, their guardian, or the staff of the school, they are asked to inform House staff via email at least 48 hrs beforehand. The House staff will then also require a confirmation email and contact details of the person they are planning to stay with. It must be understood, that for the duration of the period between the time the child leaves the Boarding House and their return, the parent/guardian requesting the leave is fully responsible for the welfare and whereabouts of the child.
Boarding Activities
In addition to the co-curricular activities organised by the school, there are many organised activities provided after school during the week from 16:00-17:40, after prep and at weekends. The House stresses that this is each student’s responsibility to participate in the wider life of the school and not the responsibility of House staff to constantly remind All activities will be displayed on one of the House noticeboards.
Weekend Outings/Activities
Throughout the year we participate in many activities or outings, many of which are instigated by what the boys want to do or provided by staff. Below are some recent trip examples

All House activities are paid for by the House. Should any activities incur a charge parents and guardians will be told in advance and the activity will be optional.
Across the year we also offer trips as a whole boarding community, some of these are sign up and some are compulsory The first weekend of the academic year is a closed weekend, meaning we would prefer it if all boarders stayed in. This is to ensure that we can bond as a team as well as get to know all the new boys to the House.
Expectations
To be polite and courteous to other members of the house, to other members of the school and to members of staff.
To be tolerant of others and to respect the feelings of others.
To be clean and smartly dressed at all times.
To be punctual, both in attending lessons and handing in work
To take pride in belonging to Hampton House, accepting responsibility for helping to keep it clean, tidy and welcoming to visitors
To participate in everything to the best of their ability.
School Bounds
LVS Ascot has a 26-acre site, most of which is accessible to all students and it is important that the boarders at LVS are allowed to explore the campus. However, it is also important (particularly during the evening and winter hours) that boarders understand the safe parameters within which they must operate

Out of bounds to all except Kew borders

Signing in & out of the house
When leaving Hampton House Boarders must sign out on Orah (even if they remain onsite). On returning to the House, they must sign back in. This forms a legal document and provides a record of the location of members of the House in the event of a fire or other emergency and should be conscientiously completed by the individual for their own safety.
Pupils are not permitted to sign others in or out, nor are they to ask someone else to sign in or out on their behalf.
ORAH
All students need to use our boarding electronic registration system Orah Each student has to download the app, register by clicking on the link sent by Orah to their school email and use the same log in details as for accessing school email or the Internet . Students must sign in and out via Orah. There are tap devices in house to make the process easier. Parents must use Orah to submit all leave requests.

Visitors
to the House
All visitors to the House must report to the duty member of staff before entering the House Once permission has been granted for them to come in the visitor must sign in using Orah in the main downstairs common room. At no point do visitors enter student dorms. They are welcome in the common area downstairs
Any student visitor who has not sought permission from the duty member of staff will not be welcomed back in the House
Fire Procedures
o The evacuation procedure in case of fire is displayed in each dormitory

o In the case of a fire, the Hampton meeting point is the covered area between DT and Science Blocks.
o A Fire Drill will take place at least once a term.
o The Housemaster will walk through the procedure with all students within the first 48 hours of the start of each term
o If a fire alarm has been wilfully set off, the cost of the call out will be passed on to the student(s) responsible.

Buddying System
The Prefects help to look after and settle the new boys into the House and School. The Prefects will take the new Boarders around the School site for a‘site familiarisation’tour House staff will then conduct a local area (Ascot/ Martins Heron) site tour, which is needed before Boarders are granted any town leave. Boys should be encouraged to get to know the Prefects well and to feel free to ask them any questions or mention any issues they may have. They have all been here for a long time and should be able to offer advice from more student friendly perspective (age wise).
Hampton Boys Roles
Everyone in the House is on a weekly chore rota for their respective duties. It is the expectation that your son fulfils his roles when requested to do so by a member of staff or Prefect. The duties are not too strenuous and may include (although not a definitive list): hoovering; cleaning the kitchen; sweeping up outside; cleaning the windows; loading/emptying the dishwasher; distributing clean laundry; and collecting rations It gives the boys a sense of ownership and helps to instil pride in the House by carrying out these tasks, as well as preparing them for independent living in the future
Dorm Tidiness
Dorm checks are carried out by duty prefects and staff each morning during the school week. It is expected that the boys will neatly fold their duvet back each morning, open their curtains and windows, remove their laundry box from their rooms and empty it and leave the floor tidy for the cleaners, who come in each weekday. If dorms were scored out of 5 here are some examples of the standards that are expected. Rooms not reaching the required standards will be issued with a House sanction

Laundry Numbers & Lost Property
All clothing (including underwear) needs to be clearly labelled with your son’s laundry number, name labels can be used but their given laundry number MUST be on their clothes.
Each morning, Boarders empty their laundry boxes inside the laundry trolley on the ground floor and place their box by their name label before breakfast. Our Laundry Lady is responsible for ensuring that your son’s clothes are maintained in a clean and tidy condition. Laundry boxes are returned to the boys through the ‘Chores Rota’when boys return to the House at 4pm; and clothes should be placed neatly away in wardrobes before prep On bedding days, beds are expected to be remade before the formal evening roll call
All laundry is machine washed and tumble-dried. Parents should ensure that all clothes provided are suitable for this process. For health reasons, no wet washing is to be hung in the Boarding House.
Safety and Security
The Boarding House has an intruder alarm system which is set every night between 22:00 and 07:00 the next morning. There are also several roll calls (registrations) to check all the boys are accounted for. Boys must enter and exit the House via the main front door signing in and out on Orah as they do. The other exits are fire exits and will trigger an alarm if opened. The main door has a fitted security‘punch’lock (for pupils’ usage) and an electronic keypad (for staff usage at times when the House is locked to Boarders) Boarders are not permitted to return to the House during the School day, apart from at lunchtime.
Town Leave
Permission must be received from the duty member of staff before students leave the school site Visits to the local area shops can be made between the hours of 16:00 and 17:40 Monday-Friday and at agreed times (with duty staff) during the weekends and with prior consent.
All of this will only be put in place once students have had a guided tour of the area by Boarding Staff. At the weekends, Boarders will be able to make the following visits at agreed times with the Duty Staff:
Year 8 Boarders: Ascot High Street and Martins Heron Tesco.
Year 9 Boarders: As above and including, Lilly Hill Park, and Bracknell.
Year 10 Boarders: As above and including Windsor.
Year 11 Boarders: As above and including Oxford and Reading
For the above to be granted permission the following guidelines are expected to be adhered to:
· Parents/Guardians must have signed the boarding permissions form.
· Boarders are to go off site in groups of no less than 3.
· Boarders must sign out and then back into Hampton House.
· Hampton House holds the mobile phone numbers for all boys in the House. It is expected that this phone is taken and is switched on with plenty of charge Boys are expected to inform House staff when their mobile number changes.
· Boys will have the House’s numbers programmed into their phone.
· Boys must carry the House contact card with them when leaving site.
EmergencyTelephone Numbers –All boys should have these stored in their mobile phones.

Pocket Money & Personal Property
Pocket money can be logged with any member of resident staff at any convenient times. It is then distributed when needed unless parents/guardians request otherwise Any large quantities of monies should be stored within the House safe upon arrival to the House. It is strongly advised that if Boarders have cash that exceeds the equivalent of £50 GBP (in any currency) that this is logged with the House to prevent any financial loss. Neither the House nor the School can be responsible for any monies that are not logged with House. It is expected that any monies the Boarders do not log with the House (no matter how small) will be stored in their personal safes that are provided. It is suggested that all boys have pre-paid debit cards such as GoHenry rather than cash.
The House cannot provide lending or overdraft facilities to the boys.
No Boarder should be in possession of large amounts of money (of any currency), either on his person or in the House, as it can encourage theft. Gifts of money in the post should be handed in to a member of staff for safe keeping.
Please be aware that neither the School nor the House accept any responsibility for loss or damage to personal property.
Parents are strongly advised to check that their household insurance covers their son’s property outside the home
Parents are strongly advised to ensure that their son has a debit card rather than cash for pocket money.
Bank accounts

We highly recommend that boys have a British bank account during their time in Hampton House. Please be aware that there are some restrictions where bank accounts are concerned For an international student to open a bank account you will need their passport and a letter from the school indicating that they are enrolled at the School. We recommend UK guardians ideally doing this before arrival or during the first half term break in October.
Health & Wellbeing Centre
The Health & Wellbeing Centre (HWBC) is run by nursing staff and pupils have access to facilities such as doctors and counsellors through the Centre. If boarders feel unwell for any reason –physical or mental – they should speak either with house staff or directly with the HWBC. Further information can be obtained from the house notice board, duty member of staff or from the LVS Senior School Handbook Surgery times:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday - 08:00 - 20:00 Thursday – 8:30am – 4:30pm Saturday – 8:30am -13:30
Counselling
Confidential Counselling Services are available to all students at LVS Ascot Counselling is a safe space for young people to explore whatever is bothering them. Boarders can arrange to see a counsellor by emailing the counselling service directly at counsellor@lvs.ascot.sch.uk or by speaking in confidence to the House Staff.

Medication
Every Boarder is required to register with the School Doctor and, should you require treatment during School holidays, you should register as a temporary resident with your local Doctor. Pupils may not possess any prescribed medication unless these have been approved by the Medical Centre and a self-administration form has been completed. Any medication prescribed or otherwise, including vitamins, supplements and indeed protein shakes or powders for shakes, must be declared on arrival and must be approved by our Health and Wellbeing Centre staff before being used. If students are found with any medication of any sort it will be confiscated and may be clinically destroyed for safety reasons.

Holidays
Boarders are expected to leave the House as close to 16:00 on the last day of term and half-term (unless term ends earlier) and no later than 18:00. Boarders are expected to return from 18:00 and before 20:00 on the night of their return, including weekends (apart from the first and last night of the academic year where other arrangements will be put in place).
The House will be closed over the holidays between the above times.
Parents/guardians should aid in the removal of personal possessions during breaks/holidays when the House will be closed. Rarely will boys be expected to remove all their belongings from the House, and international students are always able to leave some possessions in boxes over the summer holiday. However, it is recommended that as many possessions are removed as possible during holiday periods. This tends to ensure boarders do not hoard items they no longer need or use.
If Boarders are due to arrive or depart on flights very early in the morning/late at night, outside the 07:00 to 22:00 timeframe, it is expected that they will be collected by their guardians either from the House in advance or from the airport, and looked after by them until a more suitable time.
The House is required to have received an address and contact number, if different to Home address or Guardian’s home address for over the Holiday period, in case there is the need to contact a student in an emergency and for immigration regulations
All early departures/late returns from holidays, should be confirmed in writing to the House (Hampton@lvs.ascot.sch.uk) at the earliest opportunity, for permission to be sought from the Principal. However, students should not be taken out of School during term time, term dates are published a year in advance.
For safeguarding, Parents must email the Boarding Housemaster if anyone other than the parents/guardian is collecting the student from the Boarding House.
Guardians
If Boarders’parents live overseas, they MUST have a legal UK guardian (UK National or holding settled status) aged 25 or over residing in the UK Parents should consult the School’s Guardian Agreement Policy for further information regarding pre-requisites for guardianship.
Parents must inform the school of any changes to the (UK) emergency contact details as soon as they occur and ensure that an updated guardian agreement form has been completed.
Rewards
In Hampton House we run two rewards schemes.
A raffle ticket reward scheme. Each half term (at least) we will have a raffle draw and there will be prizes for those drawn. Raffle tickets are awarded as a general pat on the back for something the boys have done
A tokens scheme, these are in the form of physical tokens for the younger boys and points for the older boys. These can be saved and redeemed for rewards such as a soft drink or extra trip.
Rewards are given for a range of activities, which can include, but are not restricted to the following:
Volunteering
Taking part in activities
Winning an in-house competition
Supporting or participating in a House event
Helping/ buddying a new student
Outstanding help to your tutor over a term
Maintained improvement in behaviour
Commitment to co-curricular activities
Participating in representative sport for a term

Setting a good example in terms of commitment or behaviour in the house
Taking part in productions
Completing D of E section to meet requirements.
Maintaining status in gold prep group
Anything a boy may do around the House or for the House (or indeed that shows impeccable manners and camaraderie) by House Staff and by prefects.
Suggestion Box
The house suggestion box is located in the TV room All boarders who wish to make a suggestion about the running of the house or to raise a concern of any kind may write it down and place it in the suggestion box (either with or without their name). The box is checked regularly by the house staff.

Sanctions

Term Dates

and finally..
I am proud that the boys who call Hampton House their home are happy, safe and can grow and develop independently, whilst still understanding and adopting correct morals and behaviour A sensible, common-sense approach is used by House staff to fulfil their roles in the House and the boys appreciate knowing and understanding the boundaries that are in place whilst living in a close-knit community.
We work hard to treat all the boys in our care fairly and ensure that everyone is dealt with equally; however, we also understand that adolescence for boys is a difficult time, especially when some of them are thousands of miles away from home. Therefore, we try to make allowances for that when issues do occur. We adopt an holistic approach where we expect boys to take responsibility for their own actions and accept where mistakes have been made. They will then serve an appropriate sanction(s) if required and then hopefully learn from their mistakes.
We hope you are supportive of this approach and that you try to be involved with your son’s experiences whilst at LVS Ascot, as far as possible. Please feel free to visit the House and school as often as possible; a member of House Staff will normally be available from 15:00 on a Friday to meet and chat with you should you wish. We welcome feedback from parents and hope that you feel that you can bring any issues or queries to our attention should you need to
We hope that you have found the handbook helpful and informative, and it has helped in preparing your family for becoming part of the Hampton House family if you are not already part of it. If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me via email, j wilder@lvs ascot sch uk or via the office phone, 01344 898543 I look forward to seeing you all soon.
