nual Santa Run around the town when the club raised the alarm. Mr Smith assumed the role of incident controller. Other brigade members, SES volunteers from Woodend and Gisborne also attended, along with police and Powercor emergency personnel. Water extraction machines have been continuously utilised inside the building, with 300 litres soaked up on the first night. The bowling club expressed gratitude to all who came to help on the day of the storm and since that time. The adjacent Kyneton Library building also sustained some flooding and floodwaters entered the Woolworths, The Reject Shop and some other nearby stores. Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre, and Kyneton Mechanics Institute also had minor impact from the storm activity. Macedon Ranges Shire Council Acting CEO Shane Walden said assessments of the damage and clean-up continued at the bowling club last week.
"The prompt response and clean-up efforts of emergency services, council staff, building tenants and contractors minimised the impact on public-facing services at most buildings," he said. "There was no impact to operating hours at KTSAC and only a short two-day closure of Kyneton Library." "The Kyneton Library received water damage to the carpet and ceiling tiles. A small amount of water entered the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, causing a power failure. "The council has insurance to cover damage to its buildings and is continuing to work through the extent of the damage, required repairs and potential costs to determine whether a claim needs to be lodged." Some rainfall estimates were about 40 millimetres in the centre of Kyneton in about 20 minutes. Farmonline Weather recorded Kyneton receiving 55 millimetres in the 24 hours on December 24/25.

Tourism boost for ranges
Local tourism has been boosted as organisations look to develop innovative ways to encourage people to stay longer in the region. The Victorian Government has awarded $50,000 to Daylesford Macedon Tourism and a $625,000 to Goldfield Gateways from its Visitor Servicing Fund. Daylesford Macedon Tourism will use the funds to deliver the DMT Regional Visitor Servicing Strategy working with Hepburn and Macedon Ranges sire councils to optimise investment in visitor servicing through physical and digital channels. The scope of the project will include: new visitor and community research, industry workshops and interviews; clarity on what visitor services should be delivering; and delivery of a visitor servicing strategy. Goldfields Gateway will use its funding to present a world-class integrated physical and digital wayfinding system that captures and informs the visitor, inviting them to explore the Victorian Goldfields. The project covers six local government areas and the tourism regions of Tourism Midwest Victoria, Daylesford Macedon Ranges Tourism and Bendigo Regional Tourism. This project will identify key visitation sites, develop compelling and beautiful wayfinding and physical storytelling that links to existing digital platforms.

Theme set for dawn service Planning is now under way for the Mount Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service themed ‘Honouring Every Role, Every Sacrifice’. The event will showcase the different ways Australians have served, and continue to serve, in wartime, conflict or peacekeeping. Mount Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service Committee President Leona Latcham said the roles that constitute ‘service’ are so varied. “Our minds often jump to the commonly represented images of those who served, such as soldiers on the ground at the frontline at the most familiar places of conflict throughout history, like Vietnam and Gallipoli,” Leona said. “We want to acknowledge the many ways that Australians work to serve and protect our country, from the mechanics who maintained the army’s fleet of vehicles to the peacekeepers in Rwanda. The stories, sacrifices and contributions of all who served are powerful, important and deserving of our thanks and attention.” Leona said the committee is keen to hear from any residents who may want to assist
and encouraged people to make contact. “We’re calling out for anyone interested in volunteering on the day. The event now attracts about 2000 attendees from the Central Victorian region and also Melbourne and broader Victoria," Leona said. "Many people don’t realise that the Mount Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service is put together by a small, dedicated group of volunteers with the generous financial support from our sponsors. “On the day of the service, we have wonderful assistance from community groups including CFA, SES and scouts, but we are always in need of additional hands to help coordinate on the morning and ensure it flows smoothly and safely. To contact the committee about volunteering on the day, email: mtmacedondawnservice@gmail.com MMADDS thanks its sponsors including the Victorian Government through Victorian Veterans Council, Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Bendigo Community Bank Gisborne and Region, Public Transport Victoria, Gisborne Region Events Activities and Tourism and KGMG Creative.

Advocates renew calls for exclusion
KYNETON
Local advocates are also deeply concerned about the controversial new plan expanding the KHMP into public lands, state and national parks with these sites being kangaroos' last remaining safe haven due to rampant urban expansion. They say this ill-conceived concept would only push kangaroos onto roads and into neighbouring farms and properties. An outcome the government no doubt wants to avoid. "Community members and tourists want to see roos in our parks. Providing more water sources in our parks and not shooting at these animals in our parks - would deter them from entering private properties. It's a win, win," one advocate said. The proposed WTMP has been prepared by the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action for consideration as an approved WTMP under section 303FO of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The plan aims to ensure the commercial harvest of Macropus giganteus (eastern grey kangaroo) and Macropus fuliginosus (western grey kangaroo) in Victoria is ecologically sustainable. It provides a framework for the application of available scientific information, best management practice and monitoring outcomes to ensure the viability and welfare of wild populations is not compromised by any action undertaken in accordance with the proposed WTMP. Comments on the proposed WTMP closed on December 11. If approved, the proposed new WTMP will remain in force for up to five years from the day after the date of its declaration. Local advocates reiterate that no safety risk assessments have been conducted, and no cost benefit analysis has been performed. "The Victorian KHMP imposes unacceptably negative impacts on our environment and ecosystems, on biodiversity, landowners, tourists, amenity and health. "Importantly, it is not evidence based, reliant on 'flimsy' data and it is impossible to monitor the humane treatment of animals," one advocate said. "We hope the federal government will take our concerns on board."

Concerned local residents and wildlife advocates have renewed calls for an end to commercial kangaroo shooting in the Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges Shires and beyond. They have called on the federal government to step in regarding the Victorian Government's Kangaroo Harvesting Management Plan. Mount Alexander Shire Council’s request to be excluded from commercial kangaroo killing, has been snubbed by the state government, while other local government areas have been granted exclusion from the plan which has recently closed for comment. Residents are urging Federal Minister for Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek to step in and stop kangaroo killing, at least until due diligence can be performed. They have also appealed to Mount Alexander Shire Council to continue to speak up for them and demand exclusion from the KHMP. The latest submissions to the federal government's Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Wildlife Trade Assessments team regarding the 'Proposed Wildlife Trade Management Plan: Victorian Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan 2024-2028' coincided with the report of another act of animal cruelty involving a joey on the outskirts of Maldon. In the latest incident just prior to Christmas the joey was left to die a painful death after its arm was blown off. Residents believe a commercial shooter was responsible as they say the shooting lasted several hours into the night, but the single joey was the only animal discovered in the aftermath, suggesting other killed roos were removed, as commercial shooters are required to do. This roo was partially obscured by a log and was likely missed. A local wildlife advocate told the Express the small roo was a mere 20 metres from the property boundary and clearly trying to escape when it was shot. "If it was shot under an Authority to Control Wildlife it's just as disappointing. The property owner has made no attempts at non-lethal control. There has clearly been no effort to maintain the fences to keep roos out. Naturally at this time of year they are going to enter properties in search of water when none can be found in our local parks," they said.

You’ll never guess You’d be surprised at the number of famous people living just down the road, in hidden little valleys, tucked away in the bush, or living in plain sight. From the super famous to the somewhat famous, and even the famous adjacent, we’re going to bring you their stories in this monthly column. Jade Jungwirth
This month features renowned author Carmel Bird who has written 11 novels, nine collections, seven anthologies, seven non-fiction works and four children’s books. Her books on writing are widely used in universities and three of her novels have been short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award, and in 2021 Carmel won the Patrick White Award for Literature. Carmel talks to the Express about her studies, her incredible writing and teaching career, and her travels.
Carmel in her cosy writing nook at her home in Castlemaine.
Carmel, an avid reader and writer since she was a young child living in Launceston, had her first foray into the limelight via her school and university magazines, but when she moved to Melbourne in the early 60s, she ventured a little further, sending her short story ‘The Scream at Midnight’ to the Women’s Weekly. “That was when I was around 22 years old. I didn’t know anything about literary magazines or anything like that, all I knew was, you could get a story in the Women’s Weekly,” Carmel said. “I didn’t expect them to say anything and then they came back and said they would buy it, which was sort of stunning.” That moment was a strange turning point that filled Carmel with the confidence to send her work out and get it published in various publications. “Then a funny thing happened, it was 1982 and a friend of mine, who was teaching French at the Council of Adult Education, was going overseas and asked me to take his class while he was away- which I did.
“When my friend came back the director said to me, ‘We can’t have you teaching French anymore, do you teach anything else because you’re a good teacher,’ and I suggested teaching how to write short stories. “He responded with the quote of the century which was, ‘Nobody would be interested in that!’ I told him we should maybe give it a go and see what happens and well, the rest is history. “This was a time when Elizabeth Jolley was teaching a bit of fiction writing in Western Australia and Gerald Murnane was doing it a little bit in Toorak and I was doing this little bit in Melbourne. Of course, before too long, fiction writing took off in universities all over the place!” Carmel, who had completed her arts degree in Hobart, was recently awarded an honorary PhD in literature by the university. She has worked as a guest lecturer at universities across Australia and world-wide, while also pursuing her writing career. continued next page

who lives
down the road d “I’ve lived in Victoria most of my life, but I did live in California for a year in the early 60s. I had married an academic, who later become a professor of law, who went to work at UCLA. “While we were living there, I wrote short stories and worked in a big fancy department store called Bullocks Westward, selling swimming costumes. Some of the customers were movie stars and I met Mia Farrow. “Then we caught the Queen Mary and went to England. We got a car and roamed all over England and wound up in Paris. My husband was still studying and I was an au pair for two little boys. “I was very keen on French in high school and I studied it at university, so while we were living in France I got a foreigner’s degree at the Sorbonne, while also learning a huge amount of colloquial French while looking after the little boys.” Carmel’s first published work was a collection of short stories in 1983 which she privately published on a friend’s printing press in his garage, and after privately publishing a novel in 1986, various large publishing companies commercially printed the body of her work. “One of the books I’m most proud of is called The Stolen Children which was published in 1998 after the government had released a report called Bringing Them Home. “I’d always been very interested in the position of indigenous people in this country, so as soon as the report came out, I bought a copy. A photo of Carmel dressed as ‘Jack Power’ her pen name for the novel Crisis.

“It was very thick and very government reporty (surprise, surprise) and I thought ‘gee, kids in school need to know about this!’ So, I contacted my publisher at the time, which was Random House, and said ‘What I’d like to do is extract from the report the oral histories of the indigenous people and put them in a book with an introduction and some comment by politicians and people’, and so we did. We made something that was inaccessible, accessible. “I’ve always found the (what I call) invasion, of the British people to be shocking. It wasn’t only the way they treated the indigenous people; it was the way they treated the convicts as well; they were slaves. Horrible!” Carmel has recently started a publishing company called ‘Treasure Street Press’ and has just published her fourth children’s book, Arabella. She is currently working on her first historical novel about Louis XIV and wakes up every day at six o’clock to start working on her manuscript. So, what’s Carmel’s advice for aspiring writers? “If you really want to write, you will write.”
Carmel is pictured with Dr Stephen Fitzgerald at Hobart University Student Review in 1959. Dr Fitzgerald later became the first ambassador to China in 1976

While the images themselves may not depict sexual activity, each painting captures the essence of these events through abstract illustration. to Wine, Skeletons and Dangerous Love, the duo explores the light and dark that exists in the world. Clare, the charismatic actress who played Scarlett O’Connor on the popular show Nashville, is known as a ray of sunshine around the world. She is an empath who leads with her heart, able to communicate and translate emotions whether on stage or screen. Born in rural Australia, she moved to Music City in 2012 for the Nashville role and immediately earned respect from the city’s musical leaders. Brandon, who began singing at age five under the gentle guidance of his mother, had a vastly different path to Nashville. In 2000, he moved from Enfield, CT, to Music City, where he taught himself to play guitar. He worked as a courier during

He spent a decade touring with music legend John Hiatt, first as percussionist and background vocalist and eventually becoming one third of The John Hiatt Trio. He worked on three of the famed artist’s albums, the last of which was nominated for a Grammy. Brandon has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Colin Linden, and Mikky Ekko. Young was also invited by John Carter Cash to finish one of his father’s unpublished works for Johnny Cash Forever Words. Tanck on the rise
Tanck has been honoured for its excellence in Australian government engagement, winning the On the Rise award at the 2023 Pause Awards for Business last week. Business co-founder and Kyneton resident Neil Pharaoh was thrilled to celebrate the win with the team. “This is a real honour for all of us and the team, which reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence and the ways in which we like to value our clients and team,” he said. Tanck saw tough competition from two-time 2023 winner Upstock and prebiotic soft drink maker bobby, to win the On the Rise category – which celebrates start-ups that have demonstrated significant success in their first three years of operation. Tanck amplifies the impact of social purpose organisations by teaching clients how to talk directly with government, to achieve the funding and policy change they need to further their mission. The brainchild of founders Neil Pharaoh and Angus Crowther, Tanck transforms more than 20 years of political knowledge and experience into systems, tools and advice that help organisations develop their own government engagement skills and networks.
Growing garden pride The Woodend Primary School Community Children’s Garden is thriving thanks to a new irrigation system. In partnership with Woodend Landcare, Greater Western Water contributed $3780 towards the installation of a new irrigation system with timer – helping the garden while saving precious time. The project has been delivered as part of Greater Western Water’s Thriving Communities Grants and Sponsorship Program. Before the irrigation system was installed, students and volunteers had a roster to hand water the plants – often taking more than an hour to complete.
The irrigation system is programmed to water the garden consistently and efficiently year-round, adjusted to meet the needs of healthy plants and produce. The garden offers a weekly outdoor learning experience for students to learn about plant sciences, gardening techniques and develop a greater appreciation of all aspects of our fragile ecosystem. Food grown at the school is offered for fundraising or taken home by students and volunteers, with excess produce to be donated to the Woodend Neighbourhood House food bank and community lunches.

Long time friends and owners of BlackJack Wines in Harcourt, Ian McKenzie and Ken Pollock, took out the number one spot for Victorian Shiraz in the 2023 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. “It’s a national competition so we were competing against the big boys,” Ian said. “Competing against the best in the country and we only missed out on the national prize by one,” Ken said. The delicious, slowly matured shiraz was Ken and Ian’s first shiraz planting on the granite soils of the Harcourt Valley. The 34-year-old vines have produced a wine that has volume, structure and a good mouth feel. The velvety tastes of sweet plums and dark berry flavours with chocolate and liquorice in the background are long lingering and worth savouring. So how did these two friends come together to manage such a successful business for the past 35 years? Back in ‘88 the two men, living in Bendigo at the time, led by their mutual love of wine and their desire to get out of the ‘big smoke’, decided to leave their respective careers to study at Roseworthy Ag College before buying the 32 hectare property on the main highway in Harcourt. “We’ve developed some very good loyal customers which is fortunate because China has had a big impact on the market. “It’s definitely a buyer’s market,” Ken said. “But the little guys like us stick to the locals in Victoria.”

Bendigo’s golden heart Located in the heart of the city, the Golden Dragon Museum showcases the vibrant history and traditions of the Chinese community in Bendigo. The museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts, artworks, and historical relics that tell the story of the Chinese migrants who played a crucial role in shaping the Bendigo goldfields during the 19th century. Greater Bendigo
The city with the Midas touch Bendigo’s Victorian streetscapes are considered unique in Australia. The unusual combination of grand gold rush-era public buildings, an intact 19th century commercial district and a century old park ranks Bendigo as one of Australia’s most impressive reg gional centres,, according to the National Trust of Victoria. The triangle formed by the Post Office and Law Courts in Pall Mall, Rosalind Park and the commercial buildings of Charing Cross is particularly noteworthy, according to the National Trust. Bendigo’s streetscapes are extraordinary; their unusual arrangement is of as much importance as the buildings themselves. The grandeur of the city’s heritage buildings is testimony to the incredible wealth of Bendigo’s quartz reefs which stretch 3600 hectares underground. Gold was discovered in Bendigo in 1851 and tens of thousands of people flocked here to seek their fortune. It didn’t take long for the sea of miner’s canvas tents to be replaced by more substantial buildings. Within a decade skilled miners were sinking shafts to tap the rich gold-bearing quartz reefs that were the source of the city’s true wealth. The 1880s and 90s were major periods of building activity, as it became clear that there were substantial deposits of gold yet to be tapped. The city was transformed. Fine public buildings such as the Bendigo Town Hall (1885) which is pictured here, The School of Mines (1887), The Art Gallery (1887) and the Law Courts (1896) were built. They were ornate and fanciful combinations often combining many architectural styles. The culture of extravagance was strong: the Shamrock hotel (1897) was rebuilt three times, each more lavish than the last. The Sacred Heart Cathedral (1896) and the Bendigo Joss House (1860s) are on opposite ends the architectural spectrum. Both are well worth a visit, and remain poignant reminders of Bendigo’s diverse religious heritage.
With its rich history and dedication to craftsmanship, Bendigo Hat Shop has become a beloved destination for hat enthusiasts and fashion connoisseurs alike. As you step inside this boutique store, you are immediately greeted by a display of exquisite hats adorning the walls and shelves. Each hat is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistry that goes into its creation. Trentham’s wombat ramble Trentham is a delightful town so close to everything but it could be a world away. On the edge of the acclaimed Wombat Forest, it’s the perfect place to do a little summer rambling. One of the nicest walks is the Wombat Walking Trail. It is around nine kilometres in length or a two-hour loop. There are interpretive signs along the way so you can find a little about the district’s history as you walk along – much of it is covered over now so an explanation explaining the secrets from the past adds interest as you go along. Parking is available by the town’s Quarry Street Reserve where the trail begins. Cross the High Street and you’ll enter Stoney Creek Reserve. After you leave that go along Park Street until you reach Trentham Cemetery where you’ll follow a grassy track along the fenceline of the graveyard before going under a canopy of trees. Cross over the Trentham-Blackwood Road to enter the forest where a path will take you down to the Trentham Racecourse Reserve. The last racehorse did a gallop here 110 years ago along what is now a path hugged by trees. An interpretive sign mark the spot where the grandstand and finishing post once were. The Wombat Walking Trail is signed all the way so you will know where you are and where you are going. It’s an easy walk and lovely to take on a spring day.

Maldon is still gold A visit to historic Maldon is just like stepping back in time. There is so much to do there that you might need a long weekend to explore all that you possibly can. Just a wander along the streets is quite an experience. Because of its intact, historic nature, largely unchanged since the Goldrush days, Maldon was declared Australia’s first Notable Town by the National Trust in 1965. And the good news is that development isn’t allowed to impinge on what makes Maldon so unique. Today it’s the town’s 19th century atmosphere that draws people to it. In the 1850s it was something else - gold - and the rush was on! Gold was discovered in the area in 1853 and Maldon became one of Victoria’ richest quartz-mining centres, but its alluvial gold resources were not as good as other areas such as Castlemaine or Ballarat. These days Maldon offers plenty for visitors to do and see, and lots of great shopping to be had.
Must-visits in Maldon Maldon Neighbourhood Centre runs the Maldon Market, which is held on the second Sunday of the month on Church Street. From soap to soup, fruit to furniture, plants to pants, jewellery to jumpers, the Maldon Market has something for everyone.
Explore from here The Inglewood Motel and Caravan Park is a charming and inviting accommodation option nestled in the heart of a picturesque countryside setting. The country motel boasts a range of well-appointed rooms, each meticulously designed to ensure comfort for guests. From cosy single rooms for solo adventurers to spacious family suites, the country-style rooms cater to the diverse needs of visitors. Clean and modern amenities, including ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and complimentary Wi-Fi, create a home-away-from-home experience. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the caravan park offers a scenic outdoor setting with ample space for caravans, campers, and tents. Surrounded by lush greenery, the park provides a peaceful retreat where guests can connect with nature. The motel and park’s proximity to Inglewood ensures that guests have easy access to a range of dining options, vintage and collectable shops and other essential services.
Maldon State Battery One of six remaining state batteries in Victoria, the Maldon battery was opened in 1915 and was last used in the 1990s. The site contains the former State Battery buildings and machinery, the Alliance Shaft and mining machinery foundations, sand heaps, and the site of the Welsh Swagman Joe Jenkins’ house. The battery can be accessed via Adair Street or via walking tracks between the Union Hill Gold Mine Lookout and the Beehive Mine and Chimney Ruins. Beehive Mine The 30-metre high Beehive Mine Chimney is an iconic part of the Maldon skyline. Completed in 1863, it’s the only chimney of its age and size remaining in Victoria. Visitors can walk through the mine site of the Beehive Gold Company to get a closer look at the chimney and a fenced mine shaft. Alongside the chimney are the fascinating remains of the brick and stone substructures for the boilers and steam engine that powered the mine. Parking is available on the Bendigo-Maldon Road. Anzac Hill looks out over Maldon and features an Avenue of Honour, war memorial, restored Turkish gun and a scenic walking track. It can be accessed by car from Anzac Hill Road or by walking track from Spring Street. There is also a 2km loop walk to enjoy, which climbs Anzac Hill from Spring Street, down Anzac Hill Road and returns to the starting point along Parkins Reef Road and High Street. Along the way you will pass the lookout, WWI Turkish gun, WWII air observation station, Anzac Memorial Avenue, Mount Tarrengower Tunnelling Co tunnel, small-bore rifle range, remains of Long Gully Bridge and the Caledonian kilns.

Nestled on a historic rural property in the Macedon Ranges, the Trio Art Studio and Gallery began its life as The Kyneton School of Art in 1990 as a centre for art training. Now, Trio Art Studio and Gallery provides space and inspiration for artists to create and make handmade original contemporary artworks. Keeping up the tradition
Kyneton Ridge Estate has a tradition of making fine pinot noir, chardonnay, shiraz and sparkling wine. In fact, for the third year in a row, the Kyneton Ridge Heathcote Shiraz has proven to be gold ... their Heathcote Shiraz 2022 topped the 2022 shiraz class at the Sydney Royal Wine Show. The estate offers a contemporary but casual cafe dining and cellar door experience, and the addition of an artspace within the cafe allows emerging and established artists to showcase their work. The Ridge Café offers a contemporary, seasonal menu designed to complement the estate’s fine table wines. Relax and enjoy the magnificent views over Blackhill Reserve with your family and friends on their sunny deck in summer or inside around their cosy woodfire in winter. Kyneton Ridge’s focus is on homemade, fresh food that can be shared. They source much of their produce locally and proudly serve Olives Olives, Kyneton Town Roaster coffee and Dough Si Dough sourdough bread. Look out for live music events or make a booking for your next special event. They can cater for up to 50 people in their café or 35 people on the deck. Ridge Café is open on weekends and public holidays from noon-4pm.
Your Kyneton checklist ... Whether it’s the vibrant art scene, local wineries, famous Piper Street eateries or the stunning old buildings, Kyneton has plenty to offer for a summer escape. Here’s a summer checklist to get you started ...
Sunshine and beer...
is there anything better? If you’re visiting the Macedon Ranges this summer, stopping by Holgate Brewhouse is a must. With freshly-brewed local beer on tap (and to take away), delicious gourmet pub meals, brewery tours, live music, accommodation and so much more, it’s the perfect place for lunch, dinner or a relaxing drink. There’s loads of outdoor seating, including their hotel beer garden and shaded Taproom patio. Or grab a quiet table under an umbrella by the olive trees on Anslow Street – locals call it the ‘West End’ and it’s Woodend’s best-kept secret. Why not stay for the weekend and book accommodation in one of their 10 boutique rooms right above the pub, in their historic hotel? Then book a table for lunch or dinner and enjoy pub classics or specialty dishes like ‘Chargrilled Lamb Tenderloins with ancient grain salad, roasted beetroot and creamy feta in pomegranate molasses’. Make sure you drop in to their Taproom too and get a tasting paddle featuring some of the 16 limited and special release beers on tap – and don’t forget to grab a few beers to take away while you’re at it. The entire Holgate range is available cold and ready to go. And, for the true beer lovers, they also run Brewery Tours every Saturday and Sunday at 3pm (go to holgate.beer/taproom to book). Summer is a great time in the Ranges – and an even better time to visit Holgate.
Make a day of touring the local wineries Macedon Ranges is known for its cool climate wines and the Kyneton area is certainly home to some wonderful wineries. Why not treat yourself to a wine tasting trip and experience them all? Eat on the famous foodie strip Piper Street is Kyneton’s proud foodie destination promising a concentration of delightful dining experiences. Whether you’re seeking a hatted establishment, a fusion of flavours or to kick back in a trendy cocktail bar, you can follow your taste-buds in comfort here. Enjoy fresh produce and unique finds With an abundance of local producers across the region, there’s every reason to sample the best locally grown and made. Offering a fine selection is Kyneton Farmers Market, which operates on the second Saturday of the month from St Paul’s Park in Piper Street. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favours, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. 2020, contemporary romance fiction, 400 pages Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. The only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they’re living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer’s block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. Everyone will finish a book and no-one will fall in love. Really.

Kyneton Football Netball Club is seeking a junior netball coordinator and team managers to join their dedicated team. This is an opportunity for individuals passionate about netball and youth development to contribute to the growth and success of the club with the support from the junior sub-committee. "We are excited to be able to provide a pathway for our junior netballers and bring on board individuals who are passionate about netball and youth development," said Netball Director Loryn Savoia. "The junior netball coordinator and team managers will play a crucial role in nurturing our young talent which is pivotal this year. We are lucky to have overwhelming interest and getting the right people will ensure the success of our junior teams as it is important, we go into 2024 with a strong focus on player development.” The junior netball coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the develop-
ment and management of the club's junior netball program. This includes coordinating umpires and overseeing administrative items such as player allocation, registration and VNA via Netball Connect. The successful candidate will also provide guidance and support to junior players and coaches. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of netball rules and regulations, excellent communication skills, and experience working with young people. In addition, the club is also looking for enthusiastic and organised individuals to fill the role of team managers. Team managers will be responsible for coordinating team logistics and ensuring the smooth running of game days. They will also act as a liaison between the club, players, and parents. Interested people are encouraged to submit their applications to: kfnc.netball@gmail.com
Stewart is back
The return of super star defender Maddy Stewart will bolster Gisborne’s powerful Agrade netball team this season. Stewart, a dual Betty Thompson Medal winner in the Bendigo League, took a break from the sport in 2023. Her return to the Bulldogs’ line-up was announced over the festive season. Gisborne won the Bendigo League premiership last season in an incredible grand final against Sandhurst, chasing five in a row. Scoring the last five goals of the match, Gisborne clinched the title 40-39 after the club’s 17 & Under side had won the grand final earlier in the day. Stewart is likely to fill the defending role occupied by Zoe Davies last season. Davies is now playing professionally in England. Knowing the pressure will be right on in 2024, the Bulldogs are keen to make a bid for another premiership. The majority of last season’s line-up will be lining up again. Stewart will also coach Gisborne’s A-Reserve side.
Jnr coaching workshop
Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club is holding a Junior Coaching Workshop for current, new and interested junior soccer coaches on Saturday February 3. The workshop will take place at Chewton Soldiers Memorial Park from 8.30am11.30am. This will be a practical, hands-on ses-
sion for current and new coaches. To register your interest visit the Castlemaine Goldfields FC Facebook page. The Castlemaine Goldfields FC's 'Kicks and Shakes' social events are also continuing every Friday until early February, from 5pm onwards. $2 Shakes and a chance to enjoy a kick with friends.
Big matches in cricket
Romsey will be at home to Gisborne in the highlight match is this Saturday’s McIntyre Cup 1st cricket round. Both sides are unbeaten this season, and the Redbacks will be looking for ways to curtail the Dragons’ key batters in opener Warren Kelly, and Riley and Jarryd Vernon. Romsey’s multi-pronged attack and fielders will need to be on the ball in the match where each side is restricted to 45 overs batting. The other key match is at Gilbert Gordon Oval, with Woodend taking on last season’s runner-up Sunbury United. The Woodsmen will be hoping to field their strongest side, as United are building towards another crack at a premiership flag. In the other two McIntyre Cup 1sts matches, Diggers Rest/Bulla is at home to Macedon, and Rupertswood take on Sunbury Kangaroos with rivalry sure to be keen.

She was at heart a cat person and owned a series of cats, the last one was her favorite called Sylvestor. She wrote several articles for the Castlemaine Mail using Sylvestor to promote MAAWS, the animal shelter, and ended up with quite a following. She continued to write until ill health prevented her from doing so. To the e nd she remained the same sweet, gentle person that so many people were drawn to. Our thanks to Arcare and Doctor Tom Dewar for their care and compassion. No flowers by request. Please make a donation if you wish to MAAWS, in memory of Cherie.

Run outs at right time Bill West
Run outs at the right time helped unbeaten McIntyre Cup 1sts leader Gisborne hold off a strong challenge from Rupertswood on Saturday. On a day when the cricket world was awash with Australian opening bat supremo David Warner playing his last Test match, the one-day encounter at Gardiner Reserve turned into the best contest in the GDCA. Only McIntyre Cup and Johnstone Shield 1sts matches were played, with the competition back in full swing this Saturday. Gisborne could not have anticipated such a strong showing from Rupertswood, thrashed by the Dragons earlier in the season. Batting first, Gisborne compiled a healthy 264 from 44.4 overs, with the irrepressible Riley Vernon leading the way with 82 (109 balls). Jarryd Vernon knocked up a quick 48, Will Mackay 42 and opener Warren Kelly 24. The visitors did not appear a danger when the first run out occurred to reduce them to 3/79. Captain Nathan Shoesmith produced a fine 81 but he was the second run out victim with the score on 164. Rupo needed 100 runs off the last 20 overs to cause a boilover. Riley Vernon proved his versatility to secure four wickets, and danger man Sam
Dennis was the third run out after making a quick 39. Rupertswood was out for 229 in 40.4 overs, in a performance which indicates no team can take them lightly. WOODEND STUMBLE Needing to win, a below full strength Woodend was outplayed by a very competitive Sunbury Kangaroos at Gilbert Gordon Reserve. Losing captain and ace opener Marcus Stewart for 1 was a major setback, and it was left to co-opener Harry Lawson to lift the scoring rate. He contributed 82 (103 balls), Hayden Ingleton made an unbeaten 39 and Andrew Cullen 35 in a score of 6/185 from 45 overs. The Kangaroos rotated eight bowlers to good effect, and despite losing an early wicket to Lawson, the visitors set their sights on victory. A second wicket stand of 108 between Shane Stuart 75 not out and Jordan Ballinger 64 was decisive and the Kangaroos finished on 4/182 in 37.1 overs, lifting their finals hopes. Stewart claimed 3-23 but it was all too late. Woodend now face a tough match against third-placed Sunbury United this Saturday. Second-placed Romsey always had the match against Macedon at Tony Clarke Reserve under control. Chris Marienfield removed both openers with the new ball and also secured an early
run out. Macedon struggled to reach 6/135 c.c. (Ed Ferguson 36, Tim Berzins 26.) Romsey’s batters failed to build big scores but coach Ben Way arrived at the crease to compile an unbeaten 35 as the visitors won in just 36.5 overs. In the remaining match, bottom side Diggers Rest was restricted to 8/156 c.c. by Sunbury United. United lost two class batters early, but opener Damien Edwards 68 not out and skipper Upul Fernando 58 scored freely as United chalked up 3/158 in 29 overs. TOP TEAM DOWN In Johnstone Shield, unbeaten ladder leader Wallan suffered a 14-run defeat against down the ladder Eynesbury. Eynesbury rattled up 4/197 c.c. from 40 overs, with Cameron Price unbeaten on 73 and Shane Collins contributing 47. The Magpies were shocked when dynamic openers Kieran Atkin and Jack Mifsud were back in the pavilion within two overs. Wallan captain Bryan Vance, the hardest man to dismiss in Johnstone Shield, scored 72 and Beau Fowler 44 but 7/185 was not enough with Collins collecting 4-29 from his eight overs. Riddell batters struggled on the Kilmore turf, being bundled out for 98 (C. Woolley 32, B. Stancombe 24). Kilmore replied with 3/99 in 29 overs (Leon Zelyvs 54). In the closest match of the day Broad-

ford compiled 140 (Gareth Sharp 63) then bowled East Sunbury out for 125 (James Jones 3-13). Current ladder: Wallan 49.6, Broadford 45.7, Aintree 41.1, East Sunbury 31.5, Kilmore 30.9, Eynesbury 30.5, Riddell 15.0.

Mt Macedon The final Saturday event for 2023 produced an overall win for C-grader Rob Taylor (27) with 40 points. Gisborne’s Daniel Gray (9) topped A-grade with 37 points, and Marcus Ward (12) led in the B-graders with 36 points. Jim Hynes eagled the 5th. Final mid-week: Ward (13) had 41 points to finish one ahead of Brian Freestone. Saurabh Singh (37) was the C-grade winner, and Trevor Atkins (11) topped A-grade. The ‘Ladies Get into Golf@MMGC’ program recommences in February – check the club’s website and Facebook page for starting date and registration details. Everything fell into place for the annual John Lowe Memorial 4BBB stableford at Mt Macedon on Saturday. Tremendous weather, course conditions, strong support and a full field --- plus a very tight finish -- were all pluses. Darcy Doyle and Nathan Fairley were the winners with 47 points. Runners-up were Hayden Phillips and Nick Victory on 46, from Steve Hohmann and Paul Stewart (Bacchus Marsh GC). A special mention for Terry ‘T-bone’ Bonella who was deserted by his intended partner pre-competition, yet still managed 39 points on his lonesome! Despite the threat of more rain, an excellent field turned out for the Gisborne Tyre and Auto Care January Mug o’ the Month stableford last week. Rob Taylor (C-grade) starred with 41 points from a handicap of 25 to land the overall prize. Tony Carter (13) had 38 points to win A-grade from
Richard Payne (6) on 37, while Sean Bassett (19) took out B-grade with 34, on a countback from Luke Robinson. Romsey Dean Kohler shot an outstanding round to win Romsey’s December medal against a strong field. Kohler returned 79-15-64 to finish well clear of Mick Nicholls Jnr 85-15-70 and Craig Sandy 94-22-72. Dylan Harris had the least putts (25) and NTPs went to Steve Wilkins, Mick Sadler, Simon Donovan and Luke Lyons. Astounding golf on one hole, less than impressive on the next summed up New Year’s Day stableford for plenty of players. The exception was Ben Owen (20) who came in a clear winner with 40 points, with Mitch Atlas (6) runner-up on 36. NTPs went to Owen (2), Atlas and Andrew Clement. Last Saturday was another top summer’s day, and teams took to the course with gusto for the four ball multiplier stableford, which can be a cruel game. Victory went to Simon Donovan (10) and Ben Owen (19) with 79 points. Rob McLennan (14) and Luke Lyons (9) came in with 68 to edge out Mitch Atlas (7) and Mick Nicholls Snr on a countback for runner-up. Lyons played an exceptional shot to almost eagle the third, and Michael McCarten and John Moody were the NTPs. Woodend Hard to believe, but it’s true! Three keen Woodend golfers wrapped up 2023 with hole-in ones. Captain Neville “Nifty” Bottams set the ball rolling by scoring an ace on the tough 14th on Boxing Day. Not to be outdone, Dalhousie Player of the Year Barney Hearnden and Wayne Sliwinski both holed out in the final Saturday stableford of the year. Superb conditions prevailed for the January medal on Saturday, with talented youngster Joel Zoch claiming his first medal and C-grade with 88-26-62. Hot on his heels was A-grade winner Wazza Else with 69-6-63, with Pup Bowen and Daniel Sipthorpe next best with nett 64s. Maurie Rintala 86-20-66 led in the C-graders. In the first mid-week event for 2024 Mark Hutchison (10) romped in with 42 stableford points. Lancefield Close scores were plentiful in the January monthly medal event on Saturday, with David Morgan 90-21-69 the winner by two strokes.
John Leefe 86-15-71 took second place on a countback from Gary Dudderidge 83-12-71 and Mark Andrews 90-19-71. Jenni Vennell took out the women’s medal last week with 97-25-72 with Kaylene Cruise 103-26-77 and Bev Beaumont 123-42-81. Tuesday Legends: Stewart Stevens (25) had 40 points, from Barry Flentjar (22) 38 and Ross Farrar (15) 37. Kyneton Louis Thompson was in hot form in the Palmer, Stevens and Rennick sponsored January medal on Saturday. He fired a fine 79-15-64 to top B-grade and edge out A-grade winner Pete Robbins 73-8-65 for the medal. Col O’Sullivan 87-19-68 pipped Paul Moore 98-29-69 in C-grade. Julie Harris led in the ladies with 97-20-77, and NTPs went to Tien Ho (2) plus super pin, Robbins, Harris, Harrison Huntley and Denise Murphy. The Members’ Draw jackpotted to $200 for February, and Glenn Cook won the Sizzlin Sensations monthly raffle. A good field played stableford last Wednesday, with Troy Magnussen (9) topping A-grade with 42 points, and back in form David Pilcher (15) shone with 43 in B-grade. Joan Gibbs (23) had 31 points to edge out Rob MacRae (26) on a countback. NTPs went to Damian Summers, Breaden Cottingham, Tom May and Tracey Bramich. Castlemaine More than 50 players competed for the January monthly medal on Saturday. Scoring was tight, and ultimate medal and B-grade winner Orry Cross returned a fine 83-12-71 to edge out Agrade winner Leigh Campbell 77-6-71 on a countback. Malcolm McKellar 96-24-72 finished a shot clear of Tony Olsson (19) in C-grade. From the 23 birdies recorded, only Jeremy Bottomley and Matthew O’Brien recorded two. Nic Simpson and Megan Carroll were NTPs. Trentham Saturday’s monthly medal produced a congested finish, with a stroke between the top seven players. Scott Batty 86-16-70 made a good start to the New Year with the medal and B-grade, and Marc Merrigan 8211-71 won the countback in A-grade. Blake Quarrier 93-22-71 took out the C-grade award. In the women’s stableford the best score came from B-grade winner Julie Hanson with 38 points, while Sally Kirkright topped A-grade with 35.

Unforgettable win Bill West
Irish jockey Luke Dempsey achieved his first winner in Australia by riding Fighting Sweet to victory in the Midland Express BM52 Handicap at Hanging Rock races on New Year’s Day. The two long established Hanging Rock race meetings each January often throw up stories with a difference, and the January 1 meeting was no exception. Apart from Dempsey’s first winning ride in Australia, the six-event meeting also produced two new track records on a ‘soft 5’ rated track, and a Kyneton-trained galloper purchased a couple of months ago for a ‘bargain basement’ $1000 broke his maiden status. Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club’s meeting was favoured by fine weather conditions to assist in attracting local and visiting racegoers. ‘The Rock’ proved once again to be a fine location for a picnic, with Kelly Sports giveaways appreciated by many of the younger generation. Efforts to maximise attendance was not helped with an incorrect morning announcement by a betting agency that the meeting had been cancelled. This may have occurred due to confusion over New Year’s Day being a non-TAB meeting, unlike the Australia Day Hanging Rock Cup meeting later this month. 100th FOR STABLE The win by six-year-old mare Fighting Sweet in the Midland Express Handicap over 1800m was special for Irish jockey Dempsey, and also the successful Grampians Racing and trainer Andrew Bobbin. It was the 100th win for Grampians Racing, based at Lake Fyans, between Halls Gap and Stawell, and Bobbin said the mare had been one of two gallopers he had in work initially. “Three years on and almost to the day, its fitting she gives us our 100th race win.” Bobbin praised Dempsey for his determination to succeed in Australia. “He’s had plenty of success riding over jumps in strong company in Europe, and he’s an accomplished rider and a hard worker.” Bobbin said Dempsey had been largely riding “slow horses” in jumps races in Victoria, and the win at Hanging Rock was a welcome breakthrough. It was the six-year-old mare’s 30th start, and she ‘backed up” on January 1 after finishing fourth at Kerang two days earlier. Dempsey settled Fighting Sweet, a $3.50 chance, near the rear of the field after the leaders had set a hot pace, and timed his run to perfection to win by nearly two lengths in the final race of the day. The district racing club is now concentrating on preparing for its Australia Day meeting on Friday, January 26.
Missed Victory salutes Missed Victory sounds like a name that would have to defy the odds to end up being a winner on the race track. And so it was at Hanging Rock races on New Year’s Day. Carrying the gold and blue colours of long time Kyneton trainer Neil Dyer, Missed Victory chalked up his first win after being unplaced at his previous six starts. Ridden by John Keating, the five-year-old came from last in the 1800m Carlton Draught Maiden Plate to win well. Missed Victory is raced by stable foreman James Dyer (Neil’s son) and racing enthusiast Brendan Fraser . James is a keen student of form and breeding, and said he reached the conclusion that Missed Victory could be a useful middle distance performer. Previously the galloper was trained by Saab Hussan without impressing , and James managed to purchase the galloper for just $1000. His first runs for the Dyer stable earned prizemoney, and January 1 was the day Missed Victory produced his best , starting as a $7.50 chance. Neil Dyer is building up a sizeable team for his annual pilgrimage north for the Darwin Cup, and other races, later this year.
Breakthrough victory: a very happy Luke Dempsey after winning aboard Fighting Sweet.

Support appreciated
The loyal support of owners, trainers, jockeys, sponsors those in attendance at Hanging Rock races on January 1 was emphasised throughout the day. Current Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club president, Gary O’Meara, is the principal of nearby Miranda Park Stud, where the breeding season recently concluded. The Miranda Park Stan Nicholls Sprint BM58 Handicap produced a close finish, with the Cranbourne trained Arroance, ridden by Ross O’Sullivan, the winner. Trainer Mick Bell said he had been keen to be in attendance as he had won a race at ‘The Rock’ last year, but had been unable to be present. Six-year-old Arroance took her earnings from 23 starts to almost $100,000 for a large contingent of owners. At his previous outing the mare had finished third over the same distance at a Healesville Picnic meeting. Long time KHRRC committeeman Brian Johnson praised O’Meara and Miranda Park Stud for backing the meeting, recalling
the tremendous contribution the late Stan Nicholls had made to racing at ‘The Rock’ over an extended period. Connections of Irish Consort, trained at Wangaratta by Dan O’Sullivan, are keen to be back on Australia Day. Ridden by Laura Lafferty, the topweight earlier streaked away to win by five lengths in a Maiden over 1000m, in a time of 57.01 seconds. The previous record of 58.24 seconds had been set by the Neil Dyer trained Limorhan on January 1, 2001. Lafferty took the day’s riding honours with a double, also winning on Vegas On Fire in the Bruce Jones Memorial Handicap. The other track record was set over 2400m in the Tony McMahon BM58 Handicap by Vic Reel, trained at Ballarat by Lucinda Boyd. Jake Duffy used successful tearaway tactics and his initiative paid off as Vic Reel covered the distance in 2:31.92, also a new track record.
A happy occasion: (from left) Brian Johnson, Gary O’Meara and trainer Mick Bell.
