GRANITE HILLS WINERY Granite Hills Winery will be open on both Saturday and Sunday of the Budburst weekend offering their renowned wine for tasting and sales plus truly delicious food and fab entertainment. It certainly will tick all boxes!

Catering will be by Parachute Landing who will prepare a slow-cooked grill with beef and pulled pork plus there will be freshly shucked oysters, barbecued chicken and a vegetarian dish as well, all served with salads.

People can visit for wine tastings and order as you go but large groups are asked to book ahead. Phone 5423 7273.

Depending on the weather there will be food served from a marquee or if inclement weather persists, guests will be dry and comfy in an undercover area in the barrel room.

Entertainment on the Saturday will be by local musicians Marty McKenna and Bec playing folk style music while on Sunday Heathcote singer/songwriter Mariah McCarthy will perform.

THE KYNETON HOTEL

The Kyneton Hotel on the corner of Mollison and Market Streets is the Budburst weekend's Kyneton Wine Hub. Visit here to enjoy tasting a variety of Macedon Ranges wines presented by six wineries: Bald Hill Estate (it's their inaugural tasting), Metcalfe Valley, Rowanston on the Track, Cold Acre, North Wine and Zig Zag Road. It's a great way to experience a number of wine offerings without travelling between properties if you are going to be a little short on time. It's also the ideal way to end your day or enjoy lunch because The Kyneton Hotel is also taking part in the Budburst Wine and Dine experience across the weekend. Enjoy a main meal paired with a glass of selected Macedon Ranges wine for the set price of $45 per person. To take advantage of this, detach the offer found within your Budburst Festival Passport and present it at the venue.

KYNETON RIDGE Kyneton Ridge was established in the 1990s and was purchased by the Wood family in 2019. Since that time, the facilities have undergone major renovations to provide a contemporary, casual café with changing art space exhibitions and cellar door experience.

The pinot noir and chardonnay blocks were planted in 1997, and fruit harvested from these vineyards is used to make signature wines. Vines are hand pruned and the fruit is handpicked which ensures quality control. Kyneton Ridge is a cool climate vineyard with granitic soil and good rainfall, which is ideal for pinot noir growth. They also produce Macedon Sparkling pinot noir chardonnay, sparkling heathcote shiraz, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, rosé and chardonnay. All wines are available for tasting and sales at the cellar door.

Open for wine tasting, wine sales and meals on weekends from 11am-5pm, and most public holidays.

From November 1 the cellar door will be open on Fridays as well from 11am-5pm for wine tasting and sales only.

Kyneton Ridge is a dog and horse friend winery in outdoor areas too.

It's a not-to-be-missed weekend showcasing the very best the region has to offer on November 19 and 20 plus the inaugural Budburst Blooms from 5pm-7pm on November 18 at pop-up hubs in Kyneton, Woodend and Lancefield showcasing selected wineries off the beaten path.

Visit a host of wineries – some open just for Budburst – and explore and experience the diversity of wine styles grown and vinified across this outstanding winemaking region.

As most wineries in the Macedon Ranges district are small and family owned, the festival offers a personalised experience to learn first-hand from some of Victoria’s best wine artisans.

Located less than an hour from Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges is one of the most geographically diverse and beautiful wine regions in Australia. This sprawling, hilly and windswept area extends from Gisborne in the south, over the Great Divide to Malmsbury and Baynton in the north, from Daylesford in the west, and across to Lancefield in the east.

Vineyard altitudes range from 300 to 800 metres above sea level, which makes the Macedon Ranges the coldest grape-growing region on mainland Australia. In addition to the classic regional pillars of high-quality sparkling wine, chardonnay and pinot noir, you'll encounter other emerging and exciting varieties including gamay, gewürztraminer, grüner veltliner, lagrein, pinot gris, riesling, syrah and tempranillo. The wines reflect the climate and topography. There is diversity, but the predominant characters are a natural acidity and a steely backbone. You'll also find fine, intense but delicate fruit characters and soft tannins in the red wines.

THE REGION The Macedon Ranges wine region is less than an hour from Melbourne’s CBD. It extends from Baynton, Romsey and Lancefield in the northeast; across to Woodend; up to Kyneton and Malmsbury in the north; then west towards Denver, Glenlyon and the Daylesford and Hepburn Springs area.

Double Oaks Estate is a family owned and run business consisting of a boutique winery, cellar door and truffle plantation. Located in Lancefield, the estate’s elegant wines are made only from the finest handpicked grapes. The cool climate allows the intensity and flavour to develop slowly, creating a higher acidity that gives the wine a freshness perfectly suited to a wide range of foods.

Last year the estate also finished planting 917 french oak trees. A 10-year plan to complete and develop a truffiere (truffle plantation). They're excitedly hoping for their first harvest of black truffles in winter 2024.

“We’ve all found, through doing this exhibition that there’s something about your mother’s passing and our own role as mothers, discovering the matrilineal,” Urquhart said.

“It’s a way to explore their legacies, both the good and the bad.”

Man charged Small projects on sex offences win funding

Police charged a Sunbury man on Friday with historical sex offences in Woodend dating back to the early 1980s.

The 72-year-old, who previously resided in Woodend, was charged following a lengthy investigation into allegations made by five victims in Woodend between 1982 and 1988. The victims were known to the man. Police charged the man with a total of 45 offences including gross indecency with a child under 16, indecent assault of a child under 16 and sexual penetration of a child under 10.

The man faced Bendigo Magistrates Court on Saturday and was remanded to reappear at the same court yesterday.

Three community projects will benefit from $1500 each in Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Small Project Grants.

Sunbury Cobaw Community Health will put the funds toward its 16 Days of Activism Film Project for production and editing.

The project aims to campaign against gender-based violence.

Romsey Playgroup’s outdoor cubby upgrade project will also gain funds to cover paint and outdoor play furniture to enhance the outdoor area for children and families using this space. Lancefield Football Netball Club will use the funding for its 150-year History Book Project.

The Small Project Grants budget for 2022/23 is $30,000 and not-for-profit groups can apply for a maximum of $1500 per application.

Postpartum is an exhibition dedicated to honouring the dead mothers of artists Melissa Clark, Melissa Urquhart and Hayley West.

Through art and ritual, they explore the nature of the relationships and memories they hold of their mothers, and how they have changed over time.

The opening of the exhibition on Saturday night included a wake complete with music, dancing, drinks, canapés, and visitors bringing tokens of remembrance of their own mothers to place at the communal altar.

Artist Melissa Urquhart has found the exhibition has provided catharsis and a way of processing her complex relationship with her mother who died almost seven years ago.

“When someone passes away there’s nothing tangible to hold and embrace. What is left is the stuff, especially the things you have a particular fondness for,” Urquhart said.

“I particularly love her plants, which were passed on to her by my granny. I propagate them and give them to my friends as gifts, a living thing that is passed on.”

“Doing this....” Urquhart gestures to her work, “it’s like I’ve had a chance to commune with mum. Like she’s embodied in the objects.

“My other work is what the French call bricolage, a collection of assorted things, like college, but it also includes stitching and little bird bones. I call it Mothers Bone. It’s the essence of her, with music and recipes, photos, and text.”

Urquhart told the Express that fellow artist, Hayley West’s mum died quite a long time ago. One of her pieces in the exhibition is numbered balls, to symbolise an experience where West went to a counsellor after her mum died and they kept asking her to rate her feelings on a scale of 10.

Stage two will include three additional courts, change rooms, cricket nets, a function room, additional car parking, a practise oval, outdoor multi-sport courts, additional sports pavilion amenities and further landscaping.

Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub campaigner, Tamara Collins, said the commitment was "really welcome news" with hopes alive to complete the project ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

"There's some excitement that the sports precinct will be completed by 2026 in time for the Commonwealth Games – it would be unreal for us to be able to host an event like this," she said.

"As a group, we feel we've had such great support from both major parties. We're really hopeful that Labor is able to come to the party and support the sports precinct too.

"It's important, with current rising costs, that we lock in costings now and get stage two rolling so it's all delivered in a timely manner."

The community welcomed the $9.5 million pledge to complete stage two of the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct.

“With many of our stadium facilities already at, or nearing capacity, having a brand new sports precinct based in the Macedon Ranges will mean so many of our residents won’t have to travel outside of the shire to enjoy community sport.

The MRRSP will encompass a 15-hectare regional park providing facilities for a range of sport and recreation activities.

It will be delivered over two stages, with stage one including a three-court sports hub, a natural turf oval and sports pavilion, passive recreation facilities, landscaping and associated infrastructure.

While stage one of the project is fully funded, with works beginning back in May, council has been continuing its advocacy effort to secure the final funding for stage two.

Pledge for precinct The state Liberal National coalition has pledged $9.5 million to complete stage two of the much-anticipated Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct if elected this November.

Liberal candidate for Macedon Dominic Bonanno announced the funds at Sankey Reserve in Gisborne last week with Shadow Sports Minister Cindy McLeish and Northern Victoria candidate Amanda Millar.

"It has been a community-led project from the beginning and will be a great if we can get it done," he said.

"We know our communities are growing and the need for the infrastructure grows with it so we want to see the sports precinct complete and we're committed to doing that."

The coalition's pledge would complement the federal government's $15 million commitment for Stage 2. Macedon Ranges mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson, said the funding was exciting news that brought the full project a step closer to reality.

Flood fund opens for Darraweit Guim

Romsey Neighbourhood House is throwing its support behind Darraweit Guim's flood recovery.

RNH is taking donations of goods and has also set up a GoFundMe with a target on $40,000 for the town that was one of the hardest hit in the Ranges.

It's believed nine houses were inundated and are now no longer habitable. A further four properties were partially inundated causing damage to sheds and infrastructure like water pumps and fencing. The town's primary school and tennis club were also impacted.

Funds grow projects

Foodbank storage, a permaculture kitchen garden and a Men's Shed project are among the local projects to benefit from the state government's Living Local Fund.

Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House will receive $161, 809 for the design and construction of open space precincts for programs and events.

Some the ideas include a permaculture kitchen garden, food forest, sensory garden, 'meet and greet' gathering space as well as start-up appliances, furnishings, storage and minor building modifications required to meet user group needs.

Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre Inc will receive $20,000 to purchase a new pottery kiln to replace a 37-year-old kiln. Community based pottery classes have been running at the centre since the 1970s.

Romsey Neighbourhood House will receive $14,450 for two storage containers with lighting and refrigeration/freezer capacity to assist with its community

Foodbank project.

Lyonville Community Planning Group will receive $7057 to purchase and install a generator to provide power for the community during our frequent power outages.

Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House will receive $6885 for a monitoring and alarm system for improved security and allow after hours access.

Woodend Men's Shed will receive $5035 for a program that responds to the isolated or struggling families with broken and damaged household items and local organisations seeking help to deliver increased services and activities to their various constituencies.

Requests involve making and refurbishing items but requires equipment that can cut, shape and sand to achieve a quality finish.

Lancefield Neighbourhood House will receive $3345 for expansion of its dining room area involving moving an adjoining wall into the timber storage area.

The Melbourne Water Corporation and the Blampied Kooroocherang Land Care Group are two of 45 projects across Victoria chosen to accelerate the state’s transformation towards a circular economy.

Melbourne Water Corporation received a $15,019 grant and the Blampied Kooroocherang Land Care Group received a $46,500 grant as part of the Victorian Government's Circular Economy Markets Fund.

The government is supporting Melbourne Water Corporation’s project in Romsey – an on-farm trial to demonstrate the use of composted urban green waste under vine in the Macedon Ranges Shire.

Blampied Kooroocherang Land Care Group aims to establish on-farm trials to demonstrate the benefits of compost application in broad-acre grazing and cropping systems.

Kyneton's Chevette Muir has a need for speed.

The 14-year-old is revved up for her second season racing Formula 500 in the juniors starting this month.

Chevy's move into 500s follows years as a dominating speedway driver racing quarter midgets since the age of seven.

"I really just wanted to step up to something bigger with more power and speed," she said.

The race meets have seen her compete across Victoria including Warrnambool, Portland, Avalon, Swan Hill and Simpson.

"I'm still a rookie and learning new things but when I'm racing I'm very excited and pumped about it," Chevy said.

"I pump up myself with some music before the race meets. I always have a look at the track to see how it is, walk around the outside of it, while I'm waiting to get out there I always think about what I can do to improve on last time."

Chevy experienced her first podium finish placing third at Swan Hill earlier this year.

Last season she finished midfield

(eighth overall) after missing a race meet.

This season she's aiming for top five.

Preparing for a race meet is a family affair, with father Jason, and brothers Jett, 16, and Chase, 12, all helping with vehicle checks and maintenance.

Her brothers too with their own racing pursuits.

The family become known around the tracks as 'Team Green' with their signature green vehicles.

Chevy encouraged young people interested to give the sport a try and young females not to be discouraged entering the male-dominated sport. She is one of five females in a field of 16.

"They should just go for it," she said.

"There's no point holding back on what you want to do. It's definitely a male dominated sport but there are definitely a few females that get to the podium."

Chevy's first race for the new season is in Portland this weekend.

The old dilapidated nurses' quarters in Halford Street Castlemaine are set to be demolished by June 2023.

The building, unoccupied since the site was decommissioned in the 1990s, is in near-condemned condition and subject to regular damage, vandalism and misuse.

The adjacent building and offices on the Halford Street site, which is currently leased

by Workspace, will remain intact.

Local MP Maree Edwards, who had earlier in the day announced $3 million to relocate Workspace to its new site in Etty Street, announced three funding streams for Dhelkaya Health, with $418,000 for the demolition.

Dhelkyaya Health representatives indicated they had not yet agreed on plans for the Halford Street site's future purpose although the demolition of the unoccupied nurses’ quarters would open up options for future accommodation and use.

“While we have lots of ideas, we don’t yet know what Halford Street will look like in the future. But we do know it will be safer and

more secure for those who work and live nearby thanks to this funding," said Dhelkaya board chair Vanessa Healy.

Ms Edwards announced a further $494,860 for a three-part, fire safety and risk management works at Dhelkaya Health.

Part one will include infrastructure upgrades at Castlemaine and Maldon, part two will be a study at Castlemaine in relation to the ageing fire panel and emergency systems and a bushfire management report. Part three of the program will include improving Maldon Hospital's Bushfire Resistance Project.

The health service will also receive a further $318,000 from the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund to re-purpose its front reception for use as a dedicated sterile stock facility and design a new reception area at the Odgers Road entrance.

"Through the RHIF, we're supporting health services like Dhelkaya Health to deliver tailored solutions that are best suited to their patients and staff," Ms Edwards said.

A bloomin’ good weekend There’s a rare opportunity to view professionally designed private gardens in the Macedon Ranges during Garden DesignFest over the weekend of November 19-20.

Five gardens will open the event across Kyneton, Tylden and Gisborne – all differing in design and features.

They range from designers Kate and Kendall Monk’s Aperture Garden in a residential area in Kyneton to Bruce Honey’s nine-acre ‘Verdicus’ in Tylden, where the garden’s overall design is a fusion of picturesque and formal design.

During the weekend, visitors will be able to talk to the designers who will generously give their time to be present at gardens.

Bruce Honey, the owner/designer of Verdicus, will host tours at 11.30am and 2pm. All gardens are open 10am to 5pm. Entry fees range from $5 to $12 (depending on the size of the garden).

Garden DesignFest is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Kew, Central Melbourne and Brighton North and has raised more than $600,000 since 2004. The main charity for this year’s event will be Youth Suicide Awareness.

Plans for a Kyneton special needs family refuge have been approved in a VCAT appeal despite its Farm Zone location.

Mark's Country Place proposes an outdoor recreation facility with activity rooms and offices for 3.9ha of Farm Zone land at Deep Lead Lane.

The proposal also includes car parking for two buses and 22 vehicles and a service dog area as well as sensory gardens, orchards, vegetable gardens and woodland area and a maze.

Mark's Country Place co-founders and directors, Sue and Stuart Colvin, said the VCAT decision was "great news following many months of uncertainty and anxiety".

"At last we can look to the future and begin the work of developing the site as we have planned and visualised for so long," they told supporters via a blog last week.

The vision for the facility is described as "a place where people with special needs and their families can go to seek refuge, relax, learn and enjoy activities not often available in normal domestic settings".

Applicants say the rural setting is vital to ensure peace and tranquility for clients who are from a broad base and catchment including schools, aged care facilities, community groups and families.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council refused plans earlier this year on six grounds relating to relating to the facility location.

They argued the proposal fragments and removes productive farmland, adversely affects nearby land uses, and was contrary to the Farm Zone.

The proposal also builds a community facility outside the established built up area, the council said.

But VCAT senior member Laurie Hewet said the proposed use was discretionary for the zone, had limited impacts and, on balance, found the proposal acceptable.

"The planning scheme encourages integrated decision making, with responsible authorities required to integrate relevant planning policies and balance conflicting objectives in favour of net community benefit and sustainable development," Hewet said.

"In this case the proposal does not lead to any significant loss of productive agricultural land and it does not adversely affect the operation of productive agricultural land in the area more generally."

VCAT also ruled that the additional vehicle movements generated by the proposal do not warrant a condition requiring the applicant to carry out road improvements sought by the council.

From humble beginnings in a suburban backyard five years ago, Backyard Fest will officially launch this weekend at Castlemaine's unique art space – Lot 19.

Backyard Fest is the brainchild of mates Alex Kavenagh and Blake Van Leeuwen, who have spent almost three years planning the event, experiencing multiple setbacks and venue changes along the way.

Launching on the first day of Australian Music Week, Backyard Fest will present a diverse variety of music to tickle everyone’s taste buds: folk, punk/garage, indie rock, psychedelic rock, afrofunk, jazz, house, groove, electronica, all performed by Australian artists, with a locals stage showcasing the incredible talent found in our own backyard.

The hardworking members of the Harcourt Progress Association shed tears of joy last Wednesday at MP Maree Edwards' election promise of a $50,000 grant towards transforming the historic railway station into a community house.

Hepburn Shire Council is calling on the community to nominate a worthy local citizen or group who has made a significant contribution to the shire as part of the Community Awards.

Award categories are: Citizen of the Year, Young Person of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

Museum spruce up Kyneton Museum is getting a spruce up!

The museum will close temporarily on December 12 to prepare for restoration works planned from mid-January 2023.

Kyneton Museum is in the former Bank of New South Wales building in Piper Street, built in 1856.

It houses changing exhibitions in the original banking chamber downstairs, while upstairs the bank manager’s residence is preserved in time, with antique furniture, ornaments and art throughout the old-time bedrooms and living areas.

Outdoor exhibits include original bluestone stables, servant's kitchen, laundry and Theaden Cottage. The museum is also home to a variety of carriages and historical agricultural equipment.

Restoration works will be undertaken on the roof of the building in line with heritage specifications, as well as internal floor maintenance.

During the closure period, museum staff will review and care for items in various collections held by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, including the heritage collection, art collection and public art collection.

Upon completion of the restoration works, the museum will open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a new exhibition called Stitch in Time.

The exhibition uncovers the innovations of local craft hobbies throughout the years and includes items from the council’s inhouse collection and the Kyneton Historical Society.

A new program of museum events and exhibitions for 2023 will be released on December 15 as part of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council Arts and Culture Event Program Launch.

Commemorating Beersheba Kyneton RSL commemorated the Battle of Beersheba with a service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Light Horse Monument last week.

The ceremony was supported by members of the 4th/8th Light Horse Troop mounted on their horses and dressed in the original uniforms of the Australian Light Horsemen.

Victory at Beersheba fell to one of the last great charges of mounted troops in history.

As Australian Light Horse Divisions captured the town and secured crucial water wells, their success also marked the beginning of the end of the war in the Middle East, which came to an end exactly a year to the day after success at Beersheba.

Kyneton has had a long history of military involvement. As

early as 1859 there was enthusiastic support for the formation of a Mounted Rifles troop.

At about this time other country towns in the vicinity formed their own troops and all eventually trained together.

It was inevitable for the economy of scale that these would all join together, and thus the detachments of Kyneton Light Horse and Kyneton Infantry Rifles came into being.

These became part of the amalgamated Victorian Volunteer Light Horse and Victorian Volunteer Rifle Corps and following the approval of the Prince of Wales the newly created units came under the umbrella of the Prince of Wales Light Horse, a regiment (the 4th/19th) that still exists and has regularly participated in Anzac Day ceremonies in Kyneton.

Economy boost for Romsey An exciting project is afoot to boost business and tourism in Macedon Ranges' east.

Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association is leading the Eastern Ranges Business and Visitor Economy Showcase Project, which will create a social media and marketing campaign.

Spring Wingding fun

Prepare for fun and entertainment at a Spring Wingding in Macedon on November 19.

The day will include a music program with local musicians, market stalls, sausage sizzle, devonshire teas and food trucks, a cake and plant stall, children’s activities including face painter, and roving entertainment.

The Spring Wingding will be held at Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House and grounds at 47 Victoria Street, Macedon, on Saturday, November 19, from 11am to 3pm.

This event is supported by Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

Free waste disposal

Residents and property owners in Hepburn can dispose of green waste for free at transfer stations in Daylesford, Creswick and Trentham throughout November.

Green waste includes tree branches, grass and leaf litter. Noxious weeds are not accepted.

“While we have experienced extreme weather conditions and flooding, we still anticipate a fire season which will approach quickly,” Hepburn Shire mayor Cr Tim Drylie said.

“We want to support our community to be as prepared as possible for summer."

Council’s fire prevention officers will begin property inspections shortly as per the council’s legislative obligations and notices may be issued to those properties with high fuel loads.

The council urges all property owners to reduce fuel on their property and to maintain this level throughout the fire season.

To make the most of the free green waste disposal during November don’t forget to take along proof of residency in Hepburn Shire. Commercial businesses disposing of green waste will still be liable for the standard gate fees.

Kyneton in Glonek’s regional tour

Violinist Jonathon Glonek will perform in Kyneton as part of a special tour to bring classical performances to regional audiences.

“Classical music is a great gift to everyone, but there are not that many opportunities to hear it in the bush,” Glonek said.

“I am trying to change that by bringing work that is not often played even in the cities to rural and regional audiences.”

He will play a series of programs featuring the 24 Caprices of Paganini in Bordertown in South Australia, and the Victorian towns of Nhill, Horsham, Stawell, Kyneton and Heathcote between November 15-20.

"Bach and Paganini, diametrically opposed, are the cornerstones of the violin repertoire,” he said.

“These works were always the source of obsessive focus and attendant angst as students but they were indispensable and, as I have found in performance, totally engaging entertainment.

“You don't need to know anything about music to enjoy these pieces."

As a performer Jonathon Glonek enjoys an unusually broad and flexible repertoire. He is recognised for his intense personal style in presenting dramatic and impactful accounts of these works. Jonathan Glonek will be performing at St Paul's Anglican Church, Kyneton, on November 19 from 2.30pm.

Well-known Kyneton stonemason Huntly Barton is running as an independent candidate for the seat of Macedon in the upcoming state election.

Mr Barton said he nominated as an independent community candidate out of "frustration and disappointment in the standard of representation that exists in our electorate of Macedon".

"We are experiencing massive changes to our region due to unplanned growth," he said.

"There is enormous pressure being forced on our infrastructure due to poor planning and this is impacting on our rural culture and the environment.

"The seat of Macedon sits astride of the Dividing Range and is the source of important north-and-south flowing rivers.

"Our waterways are the veins of the land, they require immediate attention.

"Past development has already put great pressure on the capacity of the land to support healthy biodiversity, landscape, productive agriculture and the character of our towns. Further damage from inappropriate development can only

make things worse."

Mr Barton said former Victorian Premier Dick Hamer introduced legislation to protect the uplands in the 1970s but it had been "trashed" over the past 50 years by successive governments.

"This government has introduced a Statement of Planning Policy that local government must comply to, but the state government seems to be exempt from this through VCAT (Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal)," Mr Barton said.

"An inquiry needs to be held into VCAT so the requirements of the SPP can be upheld."

Mr Barton said our farmland had been diminished by poor planning with no account for soil types.

"As global warming diminishes the viability of low rainfall areas, areas such as ours will be required to produce more food," he said.

"It is essential that fertile soils are protected from over capitalisation and our river arteries remain unpolluted for the sake of the environment and mankind."

Plans for a new kindergarten with maternal child health centre in Lancefield to ease service pressures will now become a reality.

MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced $1.8 million in Victorian Government Building Blocks funding last week following Macedon Ranges Shire Council's strong advocacy.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the muchneeded project would make a big difference to children and families in Lancefield.

“Lancefield and Romsey are experiencing growth, which is expected to continue into the future. Current services in the area are operating at capacity," she said.

In 2021, the council identified early years services in Lancefield were likely to see future strain due to increased pressure for services.

Population growth, the roll-out of funded kindergarten for three-year-olds, and the increase in hours of pre-prep for four-year-olds have increased demand for services.

Without a dedicated MCH centre in Lancefield, residents also currently travel to Romsey for services, which are also experiencing high demand due to growth in the area.

The new centre is expected to alleviate these pressures and the facility will have capacity to be utilised by the current community-based Lancefield Playgroup.

The new centre is expected to be completed and operational for the 2024 school year.

Young readers in Macedon are set to benefit from an added $16,632 in funding for local libraries from the 2022-23 Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund.

The funding will enable libraries to purchase books on the suggested reading list for the reading challenge, which encourages youth to read and record their efforts online.

Public libraries play an important role during the challenge, with many young readers visiting their local library to access the books included on the list.

The Paddock on the home stretch The Paddock eco village in Reckleben Street Castlemaine is fast taking shape, despite the pandemic and great instability in the building industry.

“We’ve managed to keep going through it all,” developer Neil Barrett said. “15 houses plus a community centre are now happily occupied.”

Work on the final stage of 11 houses began in May this year and are due to be completed in September next year. So far, eight of these have been sold off the plan, allowing the project to proceed with confidence.

“Right now there are 22 people living here. Fortunately, it’s attracted a pretty diverse group of people, young and old, male and female, from various backgrounds including medicine, childcare, law, cycle touring, and teaching,” Mr Barrett said.

“One of the guys is currently in New Zealand for a month to run several bike tours, another has resigned from a good job with the Melbourne City Council to work with the Castlemaine Institute and another is soon to complete his PhD on fast rail.

“The comfort level in the houses designed by Crosby Architects has been greatly appreciated by residents.

“The 8.5-star rating and the 4kW of solar on the roofs have also resulted in incredibly low energy bills.

“Residents are now considering an investment in batteries to make better use of the solar output and to help avoid blackouts of the sort we suffered recently.”

Residents say they are often asked how the community is governed. They respond that they do the work themselves, instead of hiring a manager, gardeners and a bookkeeper. Time will tell if this will work in the long run as some special skills are often needed.

Residents also meet informally on Friday nights and Sunday mornings to enjoy a cuppa or a glass, exchange tips on gardening, hear about events coming up in Castlemaine, and simply enjoy each other’s company. It’s a good social life.

“The food growing gardens, including about 25 wicking beds, are at their peak now while the growth in the large number of native plants surrounding the houses has been little short of phenomenal,” Mr Barrett said.

“Ultimately we hope that by providing a model of sustainable living, the idea will spread and make a contribution to emissions reduction around the world.”

Truck show returns bigger and better Tickets are on sale now for the 2022 HHA & Larsen’s Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show.

Now in its 34th year the show will be returning bigger and better than ever with a full program of events at the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve on November 26 and 27.

The long running event is a popular attraction for the community and trucking industry while also raising valuable funds to support community projects and charity.

Truck owners from all over Australia will have the chance to win trophies across 10 categories plus Saturday Best on Ground and Rig of the Show with a $1000 cash prize.

I have been approached by a couple of local senior citizens who are in their 90s to let people know that Macedon Ranges Shire Council seems to have forgotten about our seniors.

Kyneton seniors are worried about their weekly lunch held at a local pub that is subsidised by the MRSC on behalf of the Commonwealth Government – $10 subsidised and $10 paid by the seniors – is going to stop because the MRSC is stopping their involvement in home care provided to pensioners and now taken over by My Aged Care.

This lunch might be the only highlight of the week they look forward to so they can catch up with friends. I contacted the local federal member and was told the money is still available if the MRSC wants to apply for it.

Kyneton Senior Citizens was formed in 1961 and now looks like closing its doors as they have no permanent place to hold meetings and other social events because the MRSC seems uninterested in helping them to find a place. MRSC seems to be able to find plenty of funding for arts and culture, sporting organisations and for the younger generation.

I am also wondering if MRSC continues with this attitude, they might stop the Christmas lunch they provide for pensioners and people who live by themselves.

I think it is time the MRSC started to think of all the members of the Macedon Ranges community.

Re. The letter from the Australian Platypus Conservancy ('Trees are not to blame', Opinions, November 1).

Firstly I would like reiterate the sentiments sent to all who have suffered loss and/or heartbreak from these floods.

But I totally disagree with your opinion.

May I suggest you get off the waste of money and resources walking track, (which was cleared of all vegetation in the first instance) and go for a leisurely stroll with your knees up around your chins just downstream of Alexander Bridge to the absolute disgrace of overgrown gum suckers and vegetation that you will find impossible to penetrate, that causes a damming effect on the creek in high and flood waters, then tell me that these trees in this area did not have any impact on the severity of the flooding to the township.

But that’s okay if you disagree, because this disgrace is also a haven to vermin (how many foxes did you scare out of there on your trek) but don’t worry about these foxes, they don’t eat Campbells Creek wildlife.

One more point, do you actually know where the junction of Campbells Creek/ Loddon River is?

FYI it’s over 2kms 'downstream' of Guildford, so how is clearing trees from this creek going to flood Guildford?

All rivers and streams need urgent attention and have done so for years.

P.S. When you go for your leisurely stroll as mentioned above, take particular attention to the devastation and destruction at the rear of the fourth property from the bridge…it's mine.

MAB now proposes a staged approach by fast tracking the anaerobic digester through regulatory approvals before proceeding with the biomass plant.

MAB continues to claim that the project is community-led when it has been developed in secret over several years and the site selected with no public consultation.

MAB has grossly inflated the emissions reductions basing them on the false premise that all waste is destined for landfill rather than recycling or composting and has ignored emissions from constructing, operating and decommissioning the proposed facility, transport, methane emissions from the wastewater lagoon etc.

MAB has promoted the dubious benefits of the proposal without substantiation but ignored all the risks such as fire, explosion, odour, noise, toxic emissions, impact on threatened species etc.

The proposal has been promoted as generating clean energy but intends to process quarantine waste from imported pig meat including plastics and cardboard packaging which may contain pathogens.

MAB seems oblivious to the corporate regulator’s focus on greenwashing and has already been rebuked by Peg Putt of the world-wide Environmental Paper Network for falsely claiming it was a signatory to the Biomass Delusion Statement.

How charitable of MASG to reveal in its newly released Annual Report 2021/22 that the chair of MAB (who is also a committee member of MASG) is set to receive a $50,000 reward if and when the project reaches financial close.

Complex planning ...

Robert Green, Lancefield I haven't been formally notified yet but Macedon Ranges Shire Council staff have not been successful in receiving a Victorian Planning Authority grant to fix their perceived complexities with the Lancefield Development Plan Overlay (DPO 24).

Residents had no knowledge of staff or council's intentions until after the fact and had not given consent to have our properties interfered with again by the shire or VPA (state government) again.

If these complexities are indeed perceived, why can't landowners have further use to improve or develop their properties without select restriction and financial burden? I think perception is long a past tense in this situation.

I myself couldn't accept the advantage proposed when my neighbours in the DPO area had been denied access to these monies.

I won't take that advantage, I just want my existing rights returned so I can use my land productively as I desire – a right most other people in our town have. People in the DPO area are not afforded these luxuries.

Help us please... we don't need the monies, just good governance, unbiased decision making with a coating of integrity while losing the disdain from this public office.

But not Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, which has just released updated plans for its Mount Alexander Bioenergy waste facility in Castlemaine, a proposal that has been discredited by experts in the field such as Dr Duncan Rouch and with similar plans rejected by City of Greater Bendigo Council.

PETCARE It’s grass seeds season It’s that time of year when dogs start running around in long grass. While they are having a great time, they may be picking up grass seeds in their coat, which can pierce and enter the dog’s skin and burrow into tissues very easily, becoming trapped due to their shape.

Grass seeds can become lodged in any area of the body.

Common areas include in between the paws, in the ears, nose, and underneath eyelids. Signs that your dog may be affected by a grass seed include licking constantly at paws, limping, shaking head/sore ears, continued sneezing or drooling, red or swollen eyes, or constant licking at other areas of the body.

Complications arise due to the fact that grass seeds can carry bacteria and cause infections, and they can continue to migrate within the body causing abscesses or issues far from the entry site.

During this season it pays to be vigilant for grass seeds – get in the habit of running your hands over your pet’s coat and feet after they’ve been running outside, and check their ears and eyes. Keep their coats clean and clipped short, especially around the feet.

Grass seeds can be removed, however this sometimes needs to be done under sedation to avoid pain and stress to your pet.

If you suspect a grass seed it is best to get your pet seen to by a veterinarian straight away. Call Maldon Vet Clinic on 5475 1751 for appointments.

Anti-toxin stocks low

Police are urging people to be alert to scammers following reports of widespread scam activity linked to the sale of puppies.

Scammers are advertising puppies for sale on websites that appear to be professional and are advertised through online marketplaces.

Once a buyer makes an enquiry with the seller, they are sent a photo of a puppy. Victims are generally asked to make cash deposits into a bank account for a puppy, which often includes costs for interstate transport, insurance and registration fees.

Victims don’t receive the puppy and lose their money, with losses between $700 and $10,000 reported.

Brigade members thanked for service

Kyneton Fire Brigade members celebrated 136 years of voluntary service to the community at the brigade's annual awards event last month.

In his introduction, brigade captain Greg McIntyre acknowledged the work of firefighters and non-operational brigade members over the past 12 months, and thanked family members who play a vital role in supporting our firefighters in their service to the community.

Coliban group officer Andrew Jan presented CFA awards recognising years of service.

A medal recognising 60 years of dedicated service was awarded to Enid Fielding, president of the Brigade Auxiliary.

Past president Beverley Lynch received the 30-year medal. Three members of the brigade received 20-year awards, including brigade treasurer Emma Magrath, who is also a leader of the junior brigade program.

Medals were also awarded to members who have served as CFA volunteers for 15 and 20 years. Certificates acknowledging five years of service to CFA were presented to four newer members.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation to ex-captain Brett Magrath, of life membership of Kyneton Fire Brigade.

Brett began his CFA service as a junior member, graduating to senior ranks at the age of 16. Brett was an active member of the brigade’s competition team for many years and is now training the next generation of competitors, as leader of the junior brigade program. Brett has been a valued member of the brigade for 37 years and served as captain of the brigade for eight years.

Mr McIntyre invited ex-captain Neil Magrath to present the life member jewel to Brett.

"It's rare for father and son to serve as captain; now both names will be listed on the life members’ honour board as well as on the board listing brigade captains," Mr McIntyre said.

Four brigade awards were also presented to members in recognition of outstanding service over the past 12 months.

Recipients were firefighters Adrian Mulraney, Jason Scheepers, Harriet Foard and Tristian Smith.

A fifth trophy, the Bent Branch Award, is for the most notable, non-operational, mistake. This is usually received by an active member, who does a lot of work to support the brigade. The 2022 winner was Lt Andrew Twomey.

Investing in property has always been a popular way to build wealth but data on investor lending is now showing that investors are pulling back. After hitting a record high in March 2022 of $11.6 billion, investor lending has now declined by 20 per cent. With prices softening and rates rising, is now a good time to invest?

There are a number of considerations that need to be made whether it’s a good time.

1. Can you afford rising interest rates?

Rates have been rising quickly and at this point, it’s too early to say when they’ll start to stabilise. Since last year, banks have been required to factor in your ability to pay a loan three per cent higher than the current rate.

Regardless, it makes sense to budget in more rate rises when looking at buying an investment property.

2. Can you get a loan?

The largest fall in house prices in recent history was in Sydney following the start of the Global Financial Crisis. A large driver of the decline was that banks were restricted as to how much they could lend. This isn’t the case now and with rising interest rates, providing mortgages is even more profitable for banks, making them keen to lend. Provided you can pay back the loan, you’re likely to be able to get a loan relatively easily.

3. Where are you looking to buy?

Not everywhere is seeing declines in prices and even in areas where prices have declined, these declines will end at some point. Meanwhile rents are still rising pretty much everywhere. Where and what you buy right now can lead to dramatically different investment outcomes even in the short term.

4. Are you looking for capital growth or rental yield?

It’s very rare to be able to get high capital growth and high rental yield.

Suburbs that have high rental yields generally do not see much capital growth while high growth suburbs have low rental yields. Investors typically concentrate on capital growth, however, rental yield is equally as important, particularly if you’re looking to hold long term.

Right now, we’re seeing low capital growth overall but strong growth in rents.

5. How long do you want to keep it?

Now is not a great time to house flip. During the pandemic, strong price growth meant it was profitable to buy and then sell quickly, even with transaction costs such as stamp duty factored in. With price increases slowing, and in some cases falling, it’s far less likely you

Romsey’s narrow escape Back to his best Bill West

Winning the close matches is a key to Romsey’s unbeaten run in Highlands division one pennant bowls this season.

In the match of the day on Saturday, Romsey had just one rink up, but this was sufficient to keep Kyneton Golf at bay by three shots.

Golf is certainly used to tight finishes – a two-shot loss at Kilmore, a one shot victory over arch rival Kyneton, and now another cliffhanger against Romsey.

It was the 13-shot victory by the quartet of Rod Schwarzenberg, John Beaumont, Greg Taylor and Matt Brundell (s) that gave Romsey a buffer to hold off the efforts of the Barry Godbolt and Toby Barker rinks.

Kilmore’s confidence at home grew again with a 20-shot victory over Kyneton, with Mark Smoljo the only winner for the visitors.

At home, Gisborne excelled by more than doubling Broadford’s tally, with David Beardmore’s four cruising to a 25-shot victory.

At home, Lancefield had all rinks up by narrow margins against Trentham, and the Tigers moved to second spot with a crucial sixth round match against Kyneton this Saturday.

Other matches are Broadford v Romsey, Trentham v Kyneton Golf, and Kilmore v Gisborne.

Current ladder: Romsey 72 points, Lancefield 50, Kilmore 44, Kyneton Golf 43, Gisborne 37, Trentham 27, Kyneton 34, Broadford 23.

The closest match of the day occurred in second division at Romsey with a fortuitous last bowl of the day tie for the home side against ladder leader Gisborne.

Kyneton Golf had a tremendous tussle against Diggers Rest, and these two sides are now level on points, well behind runaway leaders Gisborne.

Macedon stayed in contention by knocking Woodend out of the top four with a five-shot victory, and bottom side Kyneton broke through for its first win this season at Kilmore’s expense.

In division three, all matches were decided by big margins as Macedon leapfrogged Woodend into fourth

Kyneton galloper Snappy Magnus, trained by Danielle Chapman, broke though for his third win last week. The five-year-old raced by the Chapman family fought on strongly in a BM64 event over 1100 metres on the Ballarat Synthetic.

Ridden by Jarrod Fry, Snappy Magnus started as an $11 chance, and came in up fresh after a break of four weeks. The bargain buy has now taken his stake earnings to $54,805 from 17 starts.

Support Movember Romsey Bowling Club is throwing its weight behind Gerry Kirwan’s Movember charitable fundraising.

Gerry (pictured) is a loyal bowling club member who has raised thousands of dollars since 2018 to assist men’s health, whether it be suicide prevention, battling prostrate or testicular cancer, or other afflictions.

The club says Gerry needs its support – and the support of anyone willing to donate – to raise funds for a great cause.

Gerry’s motivation: "I’m raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives. I need your help.

GOLF results Kyneton Terry Gamble was a triple winner with a fine round of 78-10 68 at Kyneton on Saturday.

He landed the November monthly medal, the Medal of Medallists title, and the A-grade award.

David Pilcher took out B-grade with 8413-71 from Tien Ho 84-12-72, and David Austin 100-24-76 as a stroke ahead of Billy McKee in C-grade.

Gamble was also a NTP (2) and super pin winner, with Pilcher, Kylie Munro, Barry Murphy and Neil Watts the other NTPs. The two-person Ambrose went to Ross Martin – Pat Clohesy with 67.75 nett from Ross Foreman – Bill McKee 69. Martin, McKee and Glen Harris were NTPs. Lancefield Starved of regular competition, three grades of Lancefield golfers turned out in good conditions for the monthly medal event on Saturday.

The medal and B-grade went to Matthew Darby with 82-14-68.

Todd Lambert topped A-grade with 828-74, and Cyril Anderson 104-29-75 was best in C-grade.

Hopefully the ladies will get a chance to clear the cobwebs with their monthly medal

on tomorrow (Wednesday).

There’s a big charity golf day at Lancefield on Sunday, November 20, with proceeds to ‘The Amigos’ Relay for Life Team – raising funds for the Cancer Council.

It’s a four-person Ambrose ($100 entry) with a barbecue lunch and prizes for the winners and runners-up, and all NTPs on the par 3 holes.

Mount Macedon Prolific winner Jim Hynes added the 27hole Mount Macedon Open to his record on Sunday.

On his home course, Hynes finished with a scratch tally of 110, two shots clear of Matt Willis (Mount Macedon).

Sun bathing the course over the past week allowed the course team to attack the prodigious growth in preparation for the Open weekend.

Winners of Saturday’s four-person Ambrose were Mick Doyle, Graeme Hogg, Jim Hynes and Tate Kemp with a tremendous 51.5 tally.

Romsey A strong field took part in the delayed October medal in sunny conditions at Romsey on Saturday.

Steve Wilkins spent 12 hours mowing all the fairway on Friday, but there was trouble for errant shots.

Fluctuating fortunes resulted in the

medal going to Andrew Clement with 817-73, from Mick Squire 78-4-74 runner-up, two clear of Luke Lyons and Pat Chisholm.

Squire had the least putts (27) and was NTP along with Lyons.

The John Laing Shield qualifiers were Clement, Squire, Lyons, Chisholm, Dean Kohler, Mal Mottram, Bob McLennan and Shannon Wright.

Woodend Talented junior Jack Roberts took out Woodend’s monthly medal on Saturday with a fine round of 84-21-63.

Hot on his heels were the consistent Ken Turley 72-8-64 and Jade Nolan 9530-65.

The course was transformed in a few days with an abundance of hard work.

Woodend’s 2022 club championships have been postponed to next year.

The club encourages players who would like to take part in the Drummond Tri-Series grudge match between Woodend, Trentham and Kyneton to get their entries in quickly.

Kyneton will host the event on Sunday, November 20, with a shotgun start for the men’s and women’s stableford. Lifeline Australia is the charity to benefit.

Kyneton Cup to Station One Bill West

A big jump in class made no difference as lightly raced Station One set a strong pace to lead all the way in the $125,000 Kyneton Cup last Wednesday.

“The Cup might have been moved to Bendigo but it was great to win our first Kyneton Cup with Station One,” local trainer Liam Howley said.

“He was is one of the first horses we bought under the Liam Howley Racing banner, and has now earned more than $200,000.

“There’s no fun like winning Cups.”

Howley becomes the second Kyneton trainer to win his home town Cup, the previous one being Neil Dyer with the popular Mrs Bently in 2002.

Station One led all the way to win a 0-64 event at the Ballarat Synthetic, and Howley was not worried about tackling much stronger company with the very promising galloper.

“It’s really exciting, great for my team and a great bunch of owners,” the trainer said.

Only to see Station One knuckle right down and go to the line strongly, with topweight Dark Dream finishing well to take second place a length behind the winner.

Newitt predicted a bright future for Station One, having beaten much more seasoned gallopers.

Hit hard by flooding and follow-up rains, efforts to have the Kyneton course fit for racing were to no avail, and the decision

to transfer to Bendigo was announced by Racing Victoria on the Sunday before Melbourne Cup week.

The nine-event program was conducted

by Bendigo Jockey Club on a track rated as a heavy 9.

Station One has shown he can handle all track conditions, and jockey Craig Newitt made it two Kyneton Cups in succession, winning in a photo aboard Indiana Lilly 2021.

While only six runners lined up for the Kyneton Cup over 2100 metres, Station One was an $8 chance with four runners well fancied in the market before him.

The Chris Waller trained Rousseau started as a $3.10 favourite and loomed up in the straight, only to see Station One find plenty and hold on strongly, with topweight Dark Dream finishing well to take second place a length behind the winner.

Newitt predicted a bright future for Station One, having beaten more seasoned and much higher rated gallopers.

Howley’s modern training complex at Pipers Creek gives him easy access to the Kyneton race track, and his team of gallopers is headed by super star Virtuous Circle, who is in the paddock awaiting a preparation for the big autumn races.

The stable will welcome inquiries from potential owners.

Meech spoke highly of Osborne’s contribution to racing, and the opportunities he has given young riders on the way up.

After flooding devastation, Malmsbury cricketers finally played matches at the weekend.

The Berries fielded three senior sides in one-day fixtures on Saturday.

The club’s top side began well but dropped catches enabled Diggers Rest/Bulla to score 8/143, with Jack Brazsell 2-16 and Nikola Cox the most successful bowlers.

Opener Brazsell scored an unbeaten 65 to keep Malmsbury in the game but they fell eight runs short of their target and look forward to making amends against Rupertswood this Saturay.

The division 2 side rattled up 6/205 c.c .with Paul Moulday 73 on debut, Guy Nelson 48 and Justin Murphy 43. All bowlers played their role as the Marsh failed to fire. Bayden Ganim and Bruce McCutcheon each claimed two wickets.

Looking forward to the match against Kyneton.

In Club Grade North the Berries went to Lancefield, and the Tigers’ star allrounder Matt Bowden was the difference between the sides.

Dan Turner and Steve Taukas began well, but the side collapsed to be out for 71 (Turner 21 – Bowden 4-6, Harry Cusack a hat-trick).

Malmsbury bowled tightly with Simon Rogers taking 2-13, then Bowden compiled 42 to take the game away.

Malmsbury look forward to tackling Kilmore on Saturday.

FIRST VICTORY The Malmsbury U18 girls gained their first-ever victory in the last over of their Friday night match Bacchus Marsh.

The Marsh girls compiled 92, and Malmsbury scored 34 runs in the run chase.

Sammy Brasher, Nikola Cox and Aaliyah Terbeeke all retired and the match tightened up.

Brasher returned to the crease and with Alexis Taylor, scored the necessary 10 runs for victory from the final over.

Legends build emerging talent Woodend Masters Football Club is supporting a new initiative of the Woodend Junior Football Netball Club called the Tackle Club.

The Tackle Club by WJFNC is a specially designed development program for U15 and U17 boys to provide local youth footballers with specific coaching and game development during the off season.

This intensive program will provide Woodend’s youth footballers with access to experienced youth and development coaching with weekly guest coaches who have extensive backgrounds in AFL Youth Pathways programs, NAB League, AFL/ VFL and other youth football programs to aid in their growth.

The Woodend Masters Football Club,

through its partnership with ICON Sports, has supported the production of new reversible training singlets to assist in the program’s implementation.

“Community engagement and support of local initiatives like this one is core to our philosophies as a club and we are so pleased to be involved. It allows us past legends help our local emerging talent grow and develop,” said Jason Koliba, outgoing Woodend Masters Football Club president.

The Tackle Club aims to engage with local youth footballs during the offseason to help develop a “growth mindset” and to provide access to a program not traditionally available to them during the off-season.

“The Woodend Junior Football Netball Club is thrilled to have the support of the Masters to help us with some of the programs essentials and we are excited to have them on board, anything that bring the Junior, Senior and Masters programs together is a wonderful outcome for the clubs and community,” said Steve Morrison, Woodend Junior Football Club president.

New changerooms and courts pledged New netball changerooms and courts for Kyneton Football Netball Club have been pledged by the Andrews Labor Government if returned at this month's state election.

Local MP Mary-Anne Thomas said Labor would invest up to $1.5 million towards new changerooms and courts for the Kyneton club, delivering spaces that the whole community could be proud of.

"Local sport is the lifeblood of Kyneton, bringing communities and families together," Ms Thomas announced on site on Sunday.

"This announcement will encourage more local women and girls into community sport, knowing they can access brand new changeroom facilities and a fantastic new playing surface.

"The Kyneton Tigers have been instrumental in fighting for new female facilities for their netballers, to ensure women and girls have everything they need to play the sport they love.”

Talented Gisborne skipper Jarryd Vernon, back from a stint in turf competition, hit an unbeaten 75 at a run-a-ball pace, and his Romsey counterpart Ben Way carried his side to victory in just 31 overs against Woodend.

As Gisborne District Cricket Association operations manager Rob McIntyre said, it was tremendous to see cricket finally under way after the first four rounds were decimated by waterlogged grounds. Players were hungry for action, but there were a minority of 'match abandoned' matches across some of the lower grades due to grounds being below par.

Reigning premier Gisborne methodically outplayed Rupertswood with quality recruit Leigh Brennan making an impact.

Rupertswood struggled to compile 136 (Mick Allen 4-10, Brennan 3-35).

The Dragons lost both openers cheaply, then Vernon and Breenan put on a match-winning partnership with the latter out for 50. Gisborne ended up with 3/139 on the board.

At Gilbert Gordon Oval, Woodend opener Marcus Stewart scored 47, Finn Hannegraff 27 and Warren Else 25 in a moderate tally of 162. Paceman Louis Moor

4-32 and Jamie Tayor 3-34 did the damage.

Romsey received a good start from Chris Burkett 34, but the match was in the balance at 5/93 after spinner Tom Robson claimed three wickets and coach Greg Matthews two.

Way revels in rescue operations with the bat, and the sixth wicket produced 74 runs as the Redbacks finished on 5/167 – Aaron Paterson 26 did well to support his captain.

In an absolute thriller that came down to the last ball, Diggers Rest/Bulla reached 5/170 (captain Rasika Batepola 100 not out) in response to Wallan’s 6/169 c.c.

KILMORE WINS ON DEBUT Joining the GDCA after many years in the Seymour District competition, Kilmore won its first match by 11 runs against Eynesbury in second tier Johnstone Shield.

Batting first, Kilmore compiled 151 (J. Buttler 43 – G. Singh 4-10) then bowled the opposition out for 140 (T. Francis 78 – T. Manuel 3-15).

Chris Axton, a Macedon stalwart, excelled with bat and ball for the Cats.

late in the innings of 7/193 c.c.

(Brendon Scott 41 not out) and shone with the ball to collect 4-21 as Sunbury United battled to score 153.

Romsey batsmen scored quickly to make 9/212 cc (Nathan Huy 49, Paul Brady 36, Corey Day 35) and Riddell collapsed to be all out for 67 in 25.4 overs (Day 3-15, Jake Patton 3-21).

NICHOLLS 112 NOT OUT Hanging Rock's Bruce Nicholls scored an unbeaten 112 (10 fours, two sixes) to enable his side to reach 6/176 c.c. at Wallan.

The Magpies were restricted to 9/123 in reply.

At the Kyneton Showgrounds, Malmsbury fought hard before going down to Diggers Rest/Bulla by seven runs.

Diggers Rest/Bulla scored 8/143 c.c. and flood ravaged Malmsbury was bowled out for 136.

In the remaining game, Bacchus Marsh 5/247 c.c. outclassed Lancefield all out for 41.

An explosive 96 not out from Kyneton allrounder Hayden Ingleton (pictured) highlighted Gisborne District Cricket Association’s fifth round of one-day matches on Saturday.

Ingleton dominated play at Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve, slamming 12 fours and six sixes. He came to the crease with the Tigers on 3/102 after captain Tom Boyer 57 (nine fours) and Kyle Cordy 30 shared an opening stand of 90.

Ingleton took the long handle to the bowling, in his short stint at the wicket, and 40 overs expired with Kyneton having a formidable 4/241 c.c. on the board in the Johnstone Shield encounter.

The 24-year-old scored 84 of his 96 runs in boundaries. Not one six came from any other player in the match.

“I had a chance to get my maiden century but the overs ran out,” he ruefully said.

Gisborne faced a huge uphill task to be competitive, and the first three wickets to deadly accurate Ben Stokes ensured the home side struggled, eventually being out for 127 (Peter Nichols 28, Danny Prendergast 25) in 35.1 overs.

Stokes claimed 3-9 from eight overs and Ingleton 3-21 from nine – all clean bowled.

Ingleton played all his junior cricket at Kyneton and – apart from a couple of seasons at Macedon – is a Tiger through and through in both cricket and football.

Kyneton Cricket Club would like to play finals at the end of the season, but realises one big win can count for little unless consistency is maintained.

MOUNT TOWRONG VINEYARD Memories and dreams of Italy are conjured up for those who travel along the winding driveway to the Mount Towrong Vineyard cellar door.

No trip to 'Italy' would be complete without a leisurely lunch of simple, home-style rustic fare matched with regional wine.

This small, family owned and operated vineyard specialising in Italian wine varietals has been a labour of love for more than 25 years.

Owners George and Deirdre Cremasco and their young family set out on a bush block to build their dream of bringing their northern Italian heritage to the Macedon Ranges.

Bottles of prosecco, vermentino, fiano, nebbiolo rosa, sangiovese, negroamaro, lagrein and their own creative blends of vivace and giovanni line the walls of this breathtakingly unique venue. The vineyard is farmed with the use of organic compost and kelp extracts with no pesticides or herbicides used.

The wines are made with low intervention where fining and filtration is kept to a minimum. Small amounts of Hungarian and French oak are used to complement the wines and sulphide additions are kept to a minimum.

PARKSIDE WINERY AND FARM If it's sparkling wine you love, then Parkside Winery and Farm is for you at Budburst 2022. The Parkside 2015 Chardonnay Pinot Noir Sparkling was awarded the trophy for Best Sparkling Wine at the Australia and NZ Boutique Wine Show in Sydney last year.

This accolade adds to other awards received for other vintages, some of which will be on tasting during the festival.

Parkside Winery and Farm are makers of handcrafted cool climate wines. Producing sparkling, pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, all wines are estate grown and vinified in the winery at Parkside using traditional techniques.

During the festival their family-friendly venue will offer tastings in the restored 1890’s horse stables. Enjoy a glass of wine with some slow cooked roast lamb on the deck or surrounding lawn area while enjoying the acoustic music from the sensational Dan Ferguson.

This historical and relaxed venue is well worth a visit.

MIDHILL VINEYARD Midhill Vineyard is a family owned vineyard just west of Romsey in the Macedon Ranges wine region. They produce true cool climate premium grapes. The wine is made by some of the best Macedon Ranges wine makers and represent the uniqueness of this coolest of regions. Midhill's cellar door opens just once a year at Budburst and is in a relaxing, rural setting with unique views of the Romsey creek valley. Visitors can expect to taste serious youthful wines from a high altitude cool climate location.

The blanc de blancs is the signature wine and has won trophies, medals and people’s choice awards consistently for the past decade. It has a fresh grape fruity style, is dry with yeasty overtones.

Midhill gewürztraminer is back. The 2022 vintage will be available for tasting and purchase.

The Midhill rosé pinot noir will also be available. Chardonnay and pinot noir are both matured in French oak barrels and display good varietal flavours and balance, typical of the region.

LANE’S END VINEYARD

COBAW RIDGE Cobaw Ridge has been part of the annual Budburst Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival since the first open wineries weekend in October 1991.

This year, plan a day to celebrate Budburst on the sunny warmer northern slopes of the Macedon Ranges in some of the most picturesque surrounds.

Certified organic/biodynamic, Cobaw Ridge’s commitment to sustainable and natural production ensures their wines are truly unique of place and time; singular and full of vitality and character.

Over the weekend taste their new releases. On Saturday enjoy with cheese platters, while on Sunday Pietro Barbagallo of Kaprica Carlton fame will be firing up the wood-fired oven to create his traditional home style pizza.

The Yugotones will be performing on Sunday, giving visitors a taste of traditional and popular folk music from the era and area of former Yugoslavia.

Established in the mid 1980s, Lane’s End Vineyard continues to deliver small quantities of concentrated, complex wines that are a product of the single vineyard they are from as well as the fortunate cool climate of the Macedon Ranges.

Located at 580 metres above sea level on the southern slopes of the Great Divide, the vineyard is perfectly suited for the growing of chardonnay and pinot noir in which Lane's End specialises.

There are two styles of pinot noir and chardonnay that allow the ability of each variety to shine in different ways.

Very limited amounts of the barrel chardonnay are left, so get in early. Lane's End's very popular rosé is back displaying a lovely savoury edge and the hallmark aromatic aromas of strawberries, musk, orange

and citrus.

Cheese kranskies will be back on the grill for Budburst and The Skerricks will be live on the lawn on Sunday afternoon.
