Two teenagers have been charged over a fire that caused extensive damage to the historic Malmsbury Railway Station last Wednesday.

The blaze broke out about 5.30pm in the original station and station master's residence, quickly spreading into the roof of the 1862 bluestone building. No one was in the building at the time.

Firefighters had to smash their way through the aged

slate roof to attack the flames, the presence of asbestos requiring crews to undergo extensive decontamination.

A Fire Rescue Victoria ladder platform was rushed from Bendigo to assist local CFA brigades battling the blaze.

V/Line services on the Bendigo Line were interrupted for several hours and with power was cut to the station as a result of the fire, late night trains arrived in darkness.

V/Line set up a generator on Thursday to temporarily power the pedestrian crossing gates.

On Sunday Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged a 17-year-old Bendigo girl and 16-year-old Bendigo boy with burglary and criminal damage by fire.

Both have been bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Hepburn Shire mayor, Brian Hood, is perplexed by lack of action by Parks Victoria.

“I have enquired on numerous times about the timing of replacement facilities,” the mayor said last week.

The latest update is that there may be construction in the coming months.

Cr Hood described the delay as “extraordinary, given the popularity of the Falls and their importance to tourism.”

“It seems we may have to hang on for a wee bit longer,” he added.

With temperatures soaring over the weekend, fire crews in Mount Alexander Shire were kept busy battling fires in Chewton, Campbells Creek and a large fire to the south of the Leanganook Campground at Mount Alexander.

At 9.50pm on Saturday night, Campbells Creek CFA was called to the site of a small grassfire on Chapel Street, Campbells Creek, where suspects were seen fleeing the scene.

"There was evidence of illegal fireworks being used at the site, which is a timely reminder that fireworks can lead to serious problems and possible injury," Campbells Creek CFA captain Stewart Hand told the Express.

Later that evening, at 11.30pm, CFA, police, SES, Ambulance Victoria and Powercor were called to attend an out-of-control house fire in Chewton.

This followed a call to emergency services at the same address about 9.30pm the same evening.

Chewton CFA 3rd lieutenant, Steve Womersley, said units from Chewton, Castlemaine, Elphinstone, Harcourt and Campbells Creek attended the property in Chewton, including a specialist Rehab Unit from Golden Square to assist with decontamination associated with asbestos.

Sports precinct cost increase

Additional intersection works have resulted in additional costs for the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct now under way in Gisborne.

Macedon Ranges Shire councillors last week voted to approve budget transfers between stages one and two of the project to balance the costs.

The unbudgeted works required moving Telstra and NBN infrastructure, which also increased consultation costs.

Additionally, as stage one of the project progressed, stage two works were identified that should be paid for from the stage two budget, according to a council report. The cost of these works was in the stage one accounts.

Tendering of stage two design consultation is under review, however, council officers have identified the amount set aside for the contract and contingencies was higher than needed.

A report to council identified the stage two budget could be reduced and the stage one budget can be increased, thereby balancing the budget.

The Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct is the largest project undertaken by the council and is split into several stages.

According to the latest council report on the project in January, stage one is on track to deliver a three-court stadium in April this year and a single oval and pavilion in May. The intersection upgrade is the one remaining component requiring construction.

Activists take on NAB A Castlemaine climate activists Bernard Tonkin, Laura Levantan and Dean Bridgfoot are set to appear at Bendigo Magistrates Court tomorrow to defend their trespass charges.

The trio were charged following their protest in March 2023 at Bendigo's National Australia Bank branch against NAB’s refusal to rule out funding for coal mine expansions.

Tonkin, Levantan and Bridgfoot plan to argue for the relevance of their Expert Witness Statements to their defence of Duress under S 320 S of the Victorian Crimes Act. Bernard Tonkin said they would be filing Expert Witness Statements that were relevant to their defence.

"Australian climate scientist and IPCC lead author Lesley Hughes will be providing one of these statements," he said.

"Other Expert Witness Statements will include Dr Debra Parkinson whose doctoral research links climate related disasters to increases in Family Violence; Dr Susie Burke, a psychologist and researcher working in Climate Change; and Dr Marty Branagan, expert on the use of Nonviolent Direct Action as a response to injustice,” he said.

“A three-day hearing is then scheduled to start on March 6, where we hope to be able to have our expert witnesses testifying," the activist said.

The triplets were born by natural process and unaided at the Rodello property on January 25 about 4pm.

The bull calf weighed in at 27kg and two heifer calves were 21kg and 23kg.

"For us, it's a bit of a novelty to see twins because we've been (breeding Angus) for a short time – but triplets? I have

spoken to seventh generation farmers who have never experienced this," Lorelle said.

The bull, a five-year-old named Nitro, has proven to be a strong breeder. He has sired four sets of twins so far and now triplets. One set of those twins was born just last week.

Rodello has seen 26 new calves this season.

The mother of the triplets has calved every year for the 10 years she has been at the property. This is the first time she has had more than one calf in a pregnancy.

Olivia assured that Mumma, as she is known, is getting "the queen treatment" as she continues to care for her healthy offspring.

An Angus cow in Riddells Creek has given birth to triplets, defying odds of one in 105,000.

Rodello property farmer Rodney Kane made the rare discovery when checking on what he believed to be twins.

"I was surprised to see three calves.

Two were already with their mum," he said.

A third calf was lost in the grass and, with rain and cold setting in, Rodney knew he had to help the calf reunite with its mum and siblings.

Upon approach the calf was spooked and ran deeper into the paddock, launching a more challenging rescue mission.

Riddell units approved Plans for a 10-unit development at Riddells Creek will progress after appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

VCAT determined the application for single-storey units on the 3535m2 site at 3 Somerville Lane was an acceptable planning outcome despite community and council push-back.

The plans attracted eight objections with concerns relating to neighbourhood character, density, traffic/safety, waste management, amenity and increased fire risk.

Last year, Macedon Ranges Shire Council adopted the position that it would not have granted a permit had it determined a decision. This position went against the council officer recommendation.

At the VCAT hearing, council argued the application was an overdevelopment of the site and would negatively alter the area's existing character.

The council also argued that the application was relying on the precedent set by the approval of 1 Somerville Lane.

VCAT member Nick Wimbush said there were two clear and competing policy imperatives in this case being: to provide additional housing, and protecting neighbourhood character.

"In the planning scheme, Riddells Creek is clearly identified as one of the settlements that will need to accommodate the shire’s growth," Wimbush said.

"The town is undergoing significant change already. In many parts of the town

recent multi-unit developments are apparent and new subdivisions at more contemporary urban densities near the town centre stand in contrast to the large allotments with single dwellings, or vacant allotments, that occur in many older parts of the settlement.

"The subject site is well located being only 700 metres from the railway station and town centre services and appears suitable for more intensive development."

Wimbush said this was supported by the council’s own strategic planning, which included the land in a zone suitable for urban densities but also identified it in its own structure planning as suitable for development.

The VCAT member found density of the development was not a significant factor in this case.

"The proposal is clearly denser than the immediate surrounding area, but in my view there are other similar developments within the Town Centre Residential Area that have successfully been incorporated into the settlement without fundamentally adversely affecting its character," Wimbush said.

"The application is clearly infill within the settlement boundary in an area identified for residential development."

Wimbush found the application’s response to neighbourhood character resulted in an acceptable planning outcome.

The application has been approved with several conditions.

He was known as Kyneton's friendly local newsagent and now Tim Collins is one of the town's newly celebrated centenarians.

Tim was the first baby delivered at the Kyneton hospital in 1924 and decades later, his wife Patricia gave birth to the hospital’s first set of triplets.

After finishing school, Tim got a job at the bank but, when war was declared, he joined the Navy and was trained as a paramedic.

He spent four years in the Navy with two years and three months at sea on Corvettes.

Tim was at sea in Choiseul Bay, off the Solomon Islands, when news came through that the war was over.

He had started studying commerce during his downtime on the ship and when he was demobilised, he went to Melbourne University to continue the course but didn't complete it.

Instead, he took over his father's role as a newsagent after he died unexpectedly in 1947. Tim ended up buying the other two newsagencies in Kyneton.

He has no regrets about staying in the small town that rallied around him after an electrical fire destroyed his newsagency.

Kyneton was also where he met and fell for a nurse named Patricia who became the hospital’s matron and the mother of his seven children.

The third biannual Maldon Classic Bike Show, celebrating classic steel bicycles, built and ridden throughout history, is set to return to Maldon this March.

Fatal crash in Gisborne

Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Gisborne early last Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Campbell Road and Kilmore Road about 3.40am after reports a car had left the road and rolled.

On arrival services located the male driver deceased in the vehicle.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

A living living w wake ake ffor or Barry Barr y Beloved Newstead resident, avid gardener and bonsai fanatic, Barry Lacey, was recently told he only has months to live.

Barry, being Barry, has decided to take this news in his stride and is inviting neighbours, colleagues, friends and family to the 'Festival of Barry's Life' in his picturesque garden.

The event will be held three days before Barry's 75th birthday and his wife of 54 years, Jen, says if people don't want to come to the 'living wake', they can simply come and celebrate Barry's birthday.

Volunteer-run charity organisation Shannon's Bridge, which helps connect patients to palliative care services and supports, is supporting Barry with his end-oflife care and his desire to end life at home. The organisation has given the gardener an enormous bonsai that now takes pride of place in his sprawling Newstead garden.

"The wonderful people from Shannon's Bridge came out and told me that I don't have days and I don't have years, I have somewhere between three and six months. I asked them if they could set up a tent in amongst my bonsai where I can enjoy my final days!" Barry said.

Barry has been living with Parkinson's disease for 15 years now but says other health issues have led to the latest diagnosis.

"I'm not dying from the Parkinson's. I have a huge list of other health issues. I have two artificial hips, a pacemaker and an artificial metal aorta. I've struggled with infections in one of my artificial hips for the past four years and now I have a carotid artery that is 95 per cent closed, is paper thin and can't be operated on."

Despite his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2009, Barry has continued to live life to the fullest teaching tai chi to the local community, running regular bonsai workshops, and being active member of the Newstead Men's Shed.

He has also provided support to others experiencing the debilitating disease, giving a moving speech at the Castlemaine and District Parkinson's Support Group's 'Parky Pals' meeting at the Castlemaine Golf Club in January.

"As my symptoms are progressing, I don't try to hide them.

I drink out of a straw where I have to, wear special underwear and I don't hide myself away...." Barry said at the meeting.

"Stand up, if you have a tremor in your hand, your feet freeze, bladder problems, act out your dreams... Remember, you are a unique person each with your own different set of symptoms and never let Mr Parkinsons stop you from enjoying your wonderful life."

Even though Barry is incredibly unwell, he still spends about six hours a day in his garden. He is incredibly proud of his bonsai collection, particularly this one that the wonderful team at Shannon’s Bridge gave him.

In true Newstead style, the community has rallied around the much-loved local identity, helping to make his living wake a truly incredible weekend-long event.

Locals Peter Skilbeck, Graham Lees and Ron Archer will help with set up and pack up. Jerry, a former tai chi pupil of Barry's, will be giving tai chi demonstrations, and a karate student of Barry's

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards, who helped the Newstead Men's Shed get off the ground, will also be attending on Saturday to show her support for Barry.

Local musicians from Melinda's Band will perform and Enda Kenny will play the harp and violin. There will even be a film crew from the Marvel Stadium, filming at the event.

There will be roving musicians, a free barbecue and drinks on hand and a chance for neighbours, friends and ex-workmates to 'roast' Barry.

Community members are urged to get along and help Barry celebrate his amazingly diverse life journey on Saturday February 17 from 11am to 8pm and on Sunday February 18 from 11am to 4pm at Lacey's Hidden Garden 6 Canrobert Street, Newstead.

New CEO at Cobaw

The start of the new year has seen the arrival of a new CEO at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health.

David Wild, who has moved from South Australia to take up the position, started at the organisation last week.

With a clinical background in mental health, David has experience in the education, health and community sectors and has worked with young people, refugees, asylum seekers, indigenous communities and survivors of torture.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s board chair Peter Donlon said that with it being three years since the organisation went through a merger, staff were excited for this new chapter.

“We look forward to this new era in the organisation’s proud 50-year history of supporting the people of Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges,” Mr Donlon said.

David will split his time between the health service’s two main sites at Sunbury and Kyneton.

“I am excited about getting to know the various communities across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges,” Mr Wild said.

In this week's Compost Conversation, the team from YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard) bid farewell to their very first YIMBY composter.

Melinda Jane took a leap of faith and joined YIMBY at the beginning of 2021. During this time, 2834 kgs of food scraps were processed in her backyard. She collected 919 buckets from her neighbours over this time!

We asked Melinda Jane to reflect on her experience as a YIMBY composter: “I will really miss the compost; it’s been a significant part of building a reasonable scale food garden in my backyard. I will miss creating soil and the reciprocity of it all. It was a lot of physical work, but I loved the making, the observing, the spreading in the garden, the deep, earthy smells of the plants being nourished.

It’s not just me in the garden. When I've put all the compost layers together…there's all the other beings doing their stuff, breaking it down, creating the heat, making magic happen – it blows my mind!

One of the things that YIMBY gave me was to become a significant part of the cycle of my garden. I enjoyed the rhythm of making compost, which then has become the rich, living soil of my garden.

The wonder of the compost making process is incredible, it’s been such a privilege to be part of this ‘world’, this was my impetus for being part of YIMBY, and it's the bit I have enjoyed the most. It's become a significant part of my relationship to my own garden and to the natural world; deepening my connection to the cycles of life, it’s fed my creativity and nurtured my wellbeing.

I also love being purposeful in this way. Most people have been so grateful, to have somewhere useful to put their food scraps; to feel part of something in our town. I’m very glad I could help out; to contribute to the community by taking action in this way.

YIMBY has given me an opportunity to do something against the ‘norm’, not everyone is in a position to do it, it’s felt very empowering to be doing something that is actually quite simple, but in effect radical, it’s backyard activism and it feels good.

Topical talks

U3A Kyneton opens the year with more than 400 members and an ever-growing range of courses and activities.

The popular Friday@U3A begins on February 9 with a presentation from Peter Wilson (ex NGV) – what the art and lives of 19th Century artist John Glover and 20th Century artist, Margaret Preston, can reveal about our history – good, bad and unexpected.

On February 16, Keith Altmann, retired civil engineer and town planner, will present the first of four monthly talks about economic growth and a sustainable future. And, on February 23, author and winner of the 2021 Patrick White Award for Literature, Carmel Bird, will be guest speaker at the new members welcome, talking about her book the The Stolen Children.

Friday@U3A happens at the newly renovated Redbrick Hall, 23 Yaldwyn Street West, on Fridays during school term time. Presentations are at 2pm and finish up with a cup of tea.

This program is open to the public – you don't have to be a member of U3A Kyneton to attend – go along, enjoy a topical presentation and find out more about U3A. You might decide to join.

Coliban Water is offering high-water using landowners, farmers, vineyard operators and businesses a new opportunity to receive a sustainable recycled water supply from the Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant.

An Expressions of Interest period opened on February 1 and closes on February 29 for those keen to learn more.

Coliban Water's general manager of operations Julian Bull said those within 10km of the plant who were interested in a long-term recycled water supply should apply.

“Recycled water is wastewater that is treated so it is safe to be sustainably re-used for many different purposes and is a highly reliable water source in a changing climate,” Mr Bull said.

The Castlemaine Water Reclamation Plant produces Class B and C recycled water, which can be used for irrigating farms, vineyards, golf courses, sports grounds and many other types of agricultural irrigation as outlined in the Environment Protection Authority Victorian guideline for water recycling.

The expanded recycled water program is part of a suite of upgrades earmarked for the Castlemaine plant over the next five years, which include the construction of a new water reclamation facility and a new biosolids handling treatment facility at the site.

“This will ensure the plant can support the continued growth in population and help us contribute to a circular economy,” Mr Bull said.

“An increase in population means an increase in the volume of wastewater received by our plant. This means as we treat the wastewater, there will be more recycled water available in the future. Approximately 50 ML of recycled water is already supplied to the Castlemaine Golf Club. Recycled water is also released into Campbells Creek as part of the plant’s EPA operating licence and this supports a platypus population in the waterway as well as other flora and fauna.

Forum to reduce wildlife road toll Macedon Ranges Shire Council is hosting a community forum to discuss strategies to reduce the rising wildlife road toll across the region.

The forum will include a series of guest speakers including Wildlife Victoria CEO Lisa Palma, The University of Melbourne wildlife ecologist Dr Kylie Soanes, Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network, and Macedon Ranges Shire Council's manager of engineering and resource recovery Eng Lim. Your January 30 edition of the Express carries a warning to Trentham residents of Telstra works.

A 'regional general manager' is quoted, assuring customers Telstra is executing the works efficiently.

Similar works commenced in the Mount Alexander area on November 20, 2023.

Mobile internet service since then has never recovered. I have written to you in that time.

In the intervening period we have contacted Telstra weekly in exchanges that have not been fruitful or pleasant.

Last week Telstra admitted in an email that it has a problem with mobile internet in the area and that the organisation does not know how to fix it. We were advised to seek another service. Our current bill is withdrawn.

During that 12-week period a 'regional general manager' did not appear, did not contact us or any of our neighbours.

Incidentally, prior to this we were described by Telstra as 'premium customers'.

The people of Trentham should seek alternative service now.

Can we resolve the impasse?

In truth, when Captain Cook planted the British flag in the sand of this continent it was a totally hypocritical and antithetical act according to the professed values of the British Empire of their Western Enlightenment and our so-called Christian ethics.

At the time this continent was conveniently declared "Terra Nullius" and its people effectively regarded a sub-human in a supreme act of brutal hypocrisy!

This was an act of pure avarice. Captain Cook was figuratively and literally standing on sand with his moral pants down, and has been rightly regarded as so, by the

original people of this land, ever since. Until we, the foreign invaders, acknowledge the systemic hypocrisy of those times, nothing will be resolved for either side of the cultural divide.

January 26 should not be regarded as a day of cultural victory according to our own Western cultural and historical values.

Granted, if the British had not invaded another empire would have in time. The world was inevitably getting smaller; the writing was on the wall for indigenous peoples around the world. However, since the abrupt colonisation of this land many deplorable things have happened. But, on the other hand, many admirable things have happened that all Australians should celebrate. Perhaps a way to resolve this impasse is to find a day when the invaders can finally acknowledge this land was never "Terra Nullius" at all and we were seen to regard the Indigenous people as fully valued humans by reverting back to our professed Enlightenment and Christian values. Perhaps when we gave Indigenous peoples the vote as a starting point?

Huge thanks to those residents who put in initial objections, those who spoke at the council hearing and those who followed the process right though the three tribunal hearings.

In reading through VCAT Member Slattery’s rulings, it is clear the community’s arguments helped influence the decision.

Big thanks to everyone who turned up for the community photos at the Wesley Hill Market and Leanganook Trail on a rainy day in winter 2022 – those images of community resistance were powerful.

Thanks also to our council for initially knocking back the application and continuing to resource the fight though VCAT. An enormous new billboard dominating the landscape from the Chewton Servo to the crest of Wesley Hill would have ruined the beautiful, tree-lined street scape of our town entrance, blared out advertising that none of us need and all for the benefit of one club and its members only.

It is a great victory for our community who overwhelmingly didn’t want another billboard in our town and still don’t.

Often modern architecture seems to look like this, grey and severe like a prison, utilitarian. I would call it just plain ugly.

The council is ensuring environmental and sustainable design elements – at the expense of some beauty?

I wonder if they're aluminium window frames, which are thermally hopeless. It should have extensive insulation against severe heat and cold so no heavy reliance on heating and cooling.

Missing man’s car found in Woodend Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Western Australian man Matthew, reported missing since November.

It is believed the 35-year-old left Western Australia on November 12 and drove through South Australia, before arriving in Victoria on November 15.

Matthew was travelling in a white 2012 Mazda BT-50 utility, registration 1GPP301.

Police hold concerns for the safety and welfare of Matthew after his car was located in Davy

Street, Woodend on November 29.

He is described as being about 185cms tall, is of slim build and has light brown hair.

Investigators have released an image of Matthew and his vehicle in the hope that someone can provide information on his current whereabouts.

School speed zones have resumed operation for the year with students returning to the classroom after the summer holidays.

Motorists are reminded to take extra care around schools.

School speed zones will be in operation from 8am-9.30am and from 2.30pm-4pm on weekdays now until the end of term one on Thursday, March 28.

Motorists will now see an increase in road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic around schools and near bus stops, at drop-off and pick-up times. Drivers have a responsibility to be especially cautious when travelling near schools, as younger children don’t have the same awareness of road safety as adults do and their behaviour may be unpredictable near the roads.

School speed zones across the state operate in line with the Victorian government school calendar – some permanently – while others operate during the times mentioned.

School speed zones are designed to keep pedestrians safe by lowering the speed limit at peak times when children are travelling to and from school. Regardless of whether a school is open or closed, or has a student-free day, all sign-posted speed reductions will still apply during the school term.

With the seasonal increase in bike riding under way, cyclists are reminded to adopt a ‘safety mindset’. Last summer, the arevo app

by RACV recorded a 33 per cent increase in bike trips.

“This is a great time for cyclists who are enjoying the great outdoor conditions, but it’s also a time of heightened risk,” an RACV spokesperson said.

“Our advice for all motorists and cyclists is to take things a little slower, make sure you’re aware of the road rules, exercise patience and plan ahead.

RACV also encourages e-scooter riders to make sure they are aware of e-scooter laws.

Swap keeps clothes from landfill

The Trentham Fashion Swap team is hosting the first of four clothing swaps for 2024 on Sunday February 18, in a great new location at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre.

The event is sure to be a fabulous day out to feel good, connect with the community, save money and help protect the planet.

The amount of clothing being thrown away has been skyrocketing globally, especially since clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014. In Australia alone, more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in landfills annually.

Unsustainable quantities of water, energy and resources are required to produce these clothes, and their production often involves harmful pesticides, damaging mining processes, toxic dyes and poor worker conditions.

Clothing swaps are a great way to reduce this waste and help find loving new owners for unwanted apparel and accessories.

So do your part by taking along up to eight clean and wearable items to the Trentham Summer Swap, which will focus on women’s clothing of all sizes, formalwear and maternity clothing, shoes, jewellery and accessories.

Snappy Tycoon is a galloper on the improve, local trainer Danielle Chapman declared after the four-year-old won at Kyneton on Saturday.

Ridden by Neil Farley, Snappy Tycoon firmed in betting to start as a $2.15 favourite, and never looked like losing in the bet365 0-58 Handicap over 1203 metres.

The Chapman family from North Woodend include ‘Snappy’ in the name of all their gallopers, and they were especially pleased to win a race on Woodend Cup Day. Snappy Tycoon was having his 10th start on Saturday, and two starts back, on January 5, he broke his Maiden status by

winning over 1100m at Stawell.

On Saturday, Farley had the favourite well positioned in the run, and shot clear in the straight, holding on to win by half a length from second favourite City Escape.

Snappy Tycoon was accompanied to the races by 25-year-old companion pony Bronson, who has a fine docile temperament.

Earlier in the meeting, another Chapman owned and trained galloper, Snappy Pierro, led but finished unplaced in a maiden race.

100-year 1 00-year celebration celebration

Mia Mia Cricket Club is celebrating 100 years this year (although we suspect a little older). The club will be playing Axe Creek at the Flat (Mia Mia Recreation Reserve) from 1pm on Saturday February 24.

An official opening of new training nets will be held at afternoon tea break, 3pm, with a reunion and dinner celebration at 6.30pm at the Mechanics Institute Hall.

Local folk group, Valley Road, will be performing. Club president Tony Leahy said the club probably existed in the 1880s but there weren’t any records to prove it.

“It re-formed in 1923 but didn’t start competitive cricket until 1928 and then they played until the war,” he said “After the war it reformed again and played in the Castlemaine association before moving to the Emu Valley association.” Tony said that over the past 10 years the club had played in four grand finals, winning two.

“It’s about friendship and fun ... winning is good but it’s not the reason for its existence,” he said.

“From back when I played to now, the afternoon teas are always something to be prized by both the local players and visitors.

“It always has been a club that I have been proud to be associated with.”

Free camping is available at Recreation Reserve.

GOLF results CASTLEMAINE Low marker Daniel Pollard included four birdies and an eagle on the 8th to return 70-2-68 on Saturday, taking out the February medal and A-grade by a stroke from James Vosti’s 75-6-69.

Megan Carroll 87-14-73 was the B-grade winner, and Sam Grimes 88-18-70 topped C-grade.

Jacqui Phiddian (46) won the mixed nine-hole stableford with 22 points, from Kevin Adams (19) on 17.

The day’s NTPs went to Malcolm McKellar and Les Prendergast.

GISBORNE The 12 monthly cup winners from 2023 competed for the prestigious Geord Rich Trophy on Saturday.

Block camera man Matty Laing, a local celebrity, won with a nett 73.

Beau Stanic put a feather in his bow, winning the monthly cup with a nett 64. Don’t think his handicap will be 34 for too long.

Son of a Gun, John Griffiths, took out A-grade with a nett 67, and Mark Conroy won B-grade with 68.

The women’s co-captains reinstated Opening Day on Wednesday, with 44 players competing in a Canadian foursomes.

Tales of success and disasters were shared at lunch, with overall winners Gail Hicks and Kathy Richards with a score of 73.

Well done to Dick Barker for organising another tremendous Rotary Club Golf Charity Day on Friday, with over 100 competing in perfect conditions.

A visiting team from Bendigo won the day.

KYNETON There was a very tight finish in Kyneton’s stroke event for the February monthly medal on Saturday.

A-grade and medal winner Jesper Hansen returned 78-12-66, one ahead of the other two grade winners.

David Ryan 82-15-67 topped B-grade from Louis Thompson 81-13-68; Jing Biscocho 90-123-67 claimed C-grade ahead of Col O’Sullivan 86-18-68.

NTPs went to David Moore, Terry Gamble, Col Hudgson,, Harrison Huntley, Noel Alldis and Kylie Munro (also super pin).

Paul Moore (29) was Wednesday’s stableford winner with 40 points, from Louis Thompson (14) 38. The ladies section went to Julie Harris (19) with 35 points on a

LANCEFIELD Last Wednesday was devoted to training sessions for the newer ladies.

Kaylene Cruise took a group of 2024 newcomers onto the course proper to help them hone the art of swinging and hitting a ball in the long and short game.

Several other members each tutored the late 2022 club members into what is involved in match play.

The club hopes these players will be ready for pennant in the near future.

Pleasing to see a 50 per cent increase in competition for Tuesday Legends over the past six months.

MOUNT MACEDON The Wednesday gentlemen welcome two new (returning) members for their end-of-month team competition on Wednesday.

Teams of four set out with the best three scores to count. The best combined score was 100 stableford points from M. Ward, B. Walsh, P. Semmens and L. Robinson, with the runners-up on 93 being T. Littman, D. Scott, M. Gorman and R. Tylor.

Mike Hoiles had the best individual tally of 35 points, on a countback from Luke Robinson and Marcus Ward.

The club is excited to again be holding a four-week clinic for ladies new to golf.

This brings the total number of participants across the clinics to over 150 novice golfers.

ROMSEY The first round of the Summer Cup on Saturday saw umbrellas and sunscreen both in play.

Just about all players had a few good holes followed by lesser performances. Over the 18 holes two players

held their nerve, with six birdies going a long way to a good tally, but not quite good enough.

Zac Scales (39) was the par event winner with +3, on a countback from Mick Squire (7). Mitch Atlas (7) finished third on +1.

NTPs went to Squire, Atlas, Tony Lakey and Luke Lyons.

Well presented fairways and great greens contributed to good scores on Wednesday.

With just 11 putts on the first nine holes, Jenny Hartley made a flying start to the January medal.

A consistent second nine saw Hartley emerge as the day’s medal and overall winner with 92-24-68, from David Jones 93-22-71 and Rob McDonald 95-17-78.

TRENTHAM Jim Dickson took out the monthly medal and B-grade with a fine 80-16-64 on Saturday.

Chris Campbell topped A-grade with 77-11-66, and Ben Norman 106-40-66 was best in C-grade.

The women’s first monthly medal for the year went to Jan Stephenson with a brilliant nett 64.

Caroline Johnson won A-grade with a nett 65, and Veronica Mahar was best I B-grade with a nett 66.

Trentham’s Get-Together Day kicked off the women’s season last week, attracting 27 players.

Bev Crowley – Irene Kocicz had an astonishing 50 points in the 4BBB, with Sally Kirkright – Irene Brierly runners-up on 45.

A lovely lunch at the Pig & Whistle Hoel at East Trentham wound-up proceedings.

WOODEND A big field contested Saturday’s monthly medal event, and there was a tie between Wayne Stott and Jarryd Kilty, both carding 74-12-62.

They will play-off for the medal next month.

Well done to Anne Roberts (handicap 50) who won B-grade with a nett 63.

In the midweek stableford Jim Lappin (21) returned 41 points, with youngsters and Will McLean and Sam Barker hot on his heels with 39.

Nyssa Payne won the inaugural nine-hole ‘Intro into Golf’ competition on Tuesday with 21 points from a 37 handicap.

The annual Maurie Armstrong 4BBB summer tournament is on this Saturday.

Sammy bound for World Cup Lisa Dennis

Harcourt teen and Bendigo BMX Club talent Sammy O’Grady has made the trek across the Tasman to Rotorua in New Zealand where he will contest first two rounds of the 2024 UCI World Cup BMX series this weekend.

The 17-year-old says he plans to give BMX his all in 2024 in a bid to really make his mark in the sport.

Sammy started out in BMX when he was just three years old and has had some incredible success on a local, state and national level over the last decade.

He has also battled his fair share of injuries during that time, but his passion for the sport and determination to succeed has seen him climb back on the bike time and again.

In 2023 he made some solid progression and in his last big race at the Australian Titles in November he was sitting in second place in the final of the Junior Elite Under 19 Class, before his front wheel washed out on one of the corners, which sent him off the bike.

Despite the setback, Sammy has teamed up with a new coach and is travelling to compete at the World Cup event under his own steam as an individual rider and, as there is no Under 19 division, will step up to compete in the Under 23 age group against some of the best riders from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Sammy then plans to jet back to Brisbane where he will contest the Oceania Championships – a World Championship qualifying event – on February 18 and the second two rounds of the World Cup series on February 24 and 25.

Sammy said he was grateful to have the

support of experienced World Titles campaigner and coach James Lautier, and has also recently gained a new sponsor CTD Industries/RIFT Factory Team, which has provided him with a high-performance RIFT frame and club jerseys.

Sammy has been on a strict diet, exercise and training regime in the lead up to the World Cup and Oceania events to ensure he will be a peak fitness and hitting his ‘speed phase’ for the competitions.

“I’ve been working out in the gym, undertaking sprints and daily track sessions,” he said.

“James has provided a wealth of knowledge and has really encouraged me and its also amazing to have the backing from the team at CTD Industries and my family.

“We’ve also been working hard to have my bike running smoothly and organising spare parts to plan for every possible issue we may face along the way.

“I am really looking forward to the competition. This is my first time competing in New Zealand since I raced at the World Championships when I was seven.

“It will be really challenging. Unlike regular competitions where you compete in numerous motos and earn points to make the finals, these competitions are really cut throat. You have to treat every race like its a final. If you don’t finish in the top four you won’t progress.”

The talented rider hopes to achieve some great results and impress selectors to win a spot in the Australian Junior Elite Under 19 team for the World Championships in the US later this year.

“My goal is to be able to compete in the final two rounds of the World Cup and the World Championships in the US if all goes well,” he said.

Station One all the way in Woodend Cup Bill West Macedon Ranges trained galloper Station One jumped out of the widest barrier quickly, surged to the front, and was never headed in the 2024 Massey Ferguson Woodend Cup on Saturday.

The five-year-old has now won four Country Cups, including three this season.

Trainer Liam Howley said it was a last minute decision to run the five-year-old at the Kyneton meeting after he had finished third in the Great Western Cup six days earlier.

A large contingent of Station One’s ownership group was present to see the fiveyear-old go round in the 1856-metre feature race. The win probably assures Station One of a place in the $500,000 Victorian Country Cups Final to be run at Caulfield in November.

Howley put 23-year-old stable apprentice Danika Munro on the topweight, with the 4kg claim reducing his weight to 60.5kg.

Munro’s first win was on Bainbridge in the Elmore Cup last year, at only her second race ride.

The young rider grew up in northern New South Wales, and now resides in Kilmore.

Munro said she was excited to win the Woodend Cup, stating Station One “had done all the work”.

There were several well supported runners in the Cup, with Hanging Rock Cup winner Friday At Five sent out favourite, just ahead of Station One and The Cunning Fox. On the home turn, Friday At Five and Bolshoi Princess – Howley’s second runner in the race – were within striking distance of Station One but the leader accelerated and with plenty of cheers from racegoers held on to win by 0.2 lengths from the fast finishing The Cunning Fox, with outsider Char third just in front of Bolshoi Princess.

The win took Station One’s earnings to $300,000.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club committee, with president Gary O’Meara at the helm, was pleased a local galloper could take out the Woodend Cup. The 10-event program saw training honours go to James Cummings, with Rhapzodise and Dios, both ridden by Teo Nugent.

The Brian Sheppard Memorial 0-58 Handicap was one of the feature events at Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club’s 10-event meeting on Saturday.

Brian passed away last year, and was a life member of the racing club, having been on the committee from the time the initial amalgamated committee of the Woodend and Kyneton-Hanging Rock clubs was formed.

Members of the Sheppard family, and friends, were present, with tributes paid to the support the racing club had received through the Sheppard family business for many years; Brian’s expertise and meticulous approach was elaborated on.

The Brian Sheppard Memorial Handicap was won by Zadar Sunset, ridden by Alana Kelly and trained by Paul Koumis at Geelong.

Guessing game on bowls spots In top form: Evergreen Kyneton skipper Mark Smoljo delivers another precise bowl on Saturday, seemingly inspired by yet another championship success on Friday evening.

Bill West Division one Highlands pennant bowls saw the top four sides chalk up victories, but speculation continues over which teams will eventually gain the double chance with three rounds remaining before the semi-finals.

It’s a real guessing game on where flag contenders will finish up come finals time.

My analysis of where sides are likely to finish up came to the conclusion that Romsey is most likely to end up on top, earning a home second semi-final.

The Redbacks have successive matches against Trentham, Diggers Rest and Broadford over the next three weekends, and should win all three – the big danger to the Redbacks could be occur at Broadford in the final round.

Kyneton leads the ladder by one point from Romsey, but faces a danger game at Broadford this Saturday, then another tough encounter against arch rival and reigning premier Kyneton Golf. A last round bye doesn’t help Kyneton either.

Golf is third, 18 points behind Kyneton at present, and face fourth-placed Kilmore, then Kyneton and Lancefield.

Three wins would most likely secure the double chance.

Kilmore, looking to make history with a finals spot in its second season in Highlands, face Golf, a bye, and Gisborne in the final round.

Fifth-placed Broadford play Kyneton Golf, Lancefield and Romsey – a tough ask with this Saturday’s clash with Kyneton a possible decider.

Mathematically sixth-placed Gisborne still has a remote outside chance, with the bye, Trentham and Gisborne ahead.

Ladder positions: Kyneton 159, Romsey 158, Kyneton Golf 148, Kilmore 121, Broadford 103, Gisborne 94, Lancefield 81, Diggers Rest 55, Trentham 48.

MAXIMUM POINTS Playing at home, Kyneton never gave Diggers Rest a look-in, winning by 29 shots on a very pleasant afternoon.

Maybe inspired by another club singles championship victory on Friday night, evergreen Mark Smoljo led the way with a 16-shot margin.

Romsey also secured maximum points, with a 39-shot win up he road at Lancefield.

Over the next fortnight or so, the Redbacks will be trying to work out the side most likely to yield the club first-ever top division premiership.

The club’s depth is apparent with teams in top spot in divisions 1 and 2, and the other side in fourth spot.

Kilmore kept Broadford at bay by seven shots in a vital encounter, and Kyneton Golf was pleased to win at Gisborne by 11 shots despite Adrian Plowman’s crew going to to Allan Higgins.

In division 2 Kyneton Golf sent out an ominous warn-

ing to other contenders by demolishing second-placed Gisborne by 44 shots.

John Trouce lived up to his name with a 27-shot margin.

Bottom side Broadford shocked fourth-placed Kilmore with a 75-44 results.

In division 3, fifth-placed Macedon kept its hopes alive with a six-shot victory over Gisborne (4), and third-placed Kilmore jolted Romsey with a 30-shot victory.

District bowling clubs have been asked to take prompt action on poor behavior at pennant matches.

Ballarat Highlands Region board secretary, Wayne Morgan, drew attention to the situation yesterday.

“The board and pennant committee have had a number of complaints recently in regard to poor player behavior during pennant competition.

“These complaints have been related to verbal abuse, bullying of other players, and in general, behavior that has no place in our sport,” Morgan stated.

He said that while the board and pennant committee has followed ussues up where requested, clubs should note that any issues relating to player behavior should be immediately reported to the team manager, and then the umpire of the day, so they can be dealt with on the day of the match,” he advised.

Woodend Cricket Club is holding a girls cricket ‘Come and Try’ Day on Sunday February 18 at Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend.

It’s a free event for girls of all ages who want to give cricket a go. Equipment provided.

All ages welcome, from 10am, with a free barbecue on offer too!

Girls (up to 10 years) are also encouraged to go along to the club’s Cricket Blast on Friday nights, where girls can play for free!

Woodend’s 18-year-old all-rounder Harry Lawson is the youngest player in the club’s McIntyre Cup side, and he was pleased to capture 3-35 on Saturday. Lawson is very impressed with the batting of skipper Marcus Stewart, and predicts he is in for a really large score in the current match.

Centuries flow – run chase on Bill West The sun shone and runs flowed freely in three of the four McIntyre Cup 1sts matches on Saturday – Romsey had two centurions with skipper Ben Way hitting a blistering 128 and opener Matthew Milne compiling 119 as the Redbacks piled on a formidable 9/444 c.c. against Rupertswood.

Unbeaten Gisborne used eight bowlers as third-placed Sunbury United set the Dragons 304 for victory at Salesian College.

Gisborne batting stars Jarryd and Riley Vernon in particular will be welcoming the challenge to put together big scores and retain top place.

In perfect batting conditions, century makers in McIntyre Cup were Way and Milne for Romsey, opener Fabian Fernando with 128 for Sunbury United, and Jason King with 122 for Sunbury Kangaroos.

Across the grades other century makers were Ali Asquar (Aintree) with 109 in Johnstone 1sts, Romsey’s Josh Wallace with 105, United’s Lance Watts 113 and Diggers Rest’s captain Andrew Knight 122 in McIntyre 2nds, and Aintree’s Charandeep Kalsi with 111 in Johnstone 2nds.

Way’s 128 (seven sixes, nine fours) from 81 balls at the Salesian College oval against Rupertswood came on top of his

match-winning 141 against Woodend.

Milne hit 15 boundaries in a more sedate century from 197 balls after Sean Day 40 and Chris Burkett 39 had scored quickly to indicate Romsey’s intent.

At Gilbert Gordon Reserve, Woodend ended up in a very strong position against Diggers Rest by bowling out for 159 in 54.4 overs, and ending the day on 2/77 in reply.

Woodend skipper Marcus Stewart was happy with the bowling brigade headed by Harry Lawson, and said his side would be making sure of first innings points and keeping the pressure on Diggers Rest this Saturday.

Macedon batters face an uphill battle chasing the formidable 8/351c.c. scored by fourth-placed Sunbury Kangaroos. Chris Ingleton claimed four wickets for the Cats.

While Gisborne, Romsey and Sunbury United have McIntyre 1sts finals position wrapped up, fourth place is still up for grabs.

Lancefield coach Alan Sinclair was very pleased with his side’s effort in Jensen 1sts against Malmsbury, in particular praising Nathan Malone for his effort with bat and ball, and Andrew Richardt for his bowling.

The Tigers bundled Malmsbury out for 58, and the match finished very early with the annual Pink Stumps Day arranged

by Lancefield CC attracting about 80 people, with proceeds going to the McGrath Foundation.

The club will also induct Jamie Walker as a Life Member, after 20+ years of service to WCC. The selection criteria require the player to have either made 3500 runs, taken 200 wickets or played 200 games.
