Firefighter speaks out on fuel loads Angela Crawford Andrew Avent knows a thing or two about wildfire and has a controversial idea for rural roadside management across the Macedon Ranges.

The Newham resident, firefighter and air attack supervisor fought both

the 2003 and 2015 'planned burns' that escaped control in the Cobaws; the first from the ground and the second from the air.

He has witnessed the carnage when the fuel load on a roadside verge is so high it explodes.

"I've watched houses burn and I've

saved a house within two minutes just this very season from roadside verge fuel loads," he says.

"I was the air attack supervisor on the Cobaw fire in 2015 and I watched a house go on Three Chain Road that was set alight because embers got into the verge and the fuel loadings were so high

that it just exploded and took the house out.

"I was sitting on top of it in an aircraft and watched it happen.

"That whole road there just lit up on the verge, but the grass wasn't burning, it was still green."

Mr Avent says that when the roads were built, the verges were a clearway and were never designed to be a tourist attraction with flora and fauna.

"What we really need to do is take what's on the verges and plant it over the other side of the fence instead, and clear all the verges," he says.

"If the verge is clear you're reducing the fire risk, drivers can see animals more readily and there will be fewer accidents and injuries to people who panic and swerve when they see a roo and hit a tree.

"It's the finer fuels that make a bigger fire, but if your grass is cut, there are no twigs and leaves and all the bark is cleared away, a quick 'grassy' is less likely to get hold in a big tree."

Mr Avent acknowledges the significant cost of such a huge undertaking but suggests landowners could be asked to take responsibility for the verges along their fencelines.

"I don't think, as a landowner myself, it's unreasonable to say 'we want to clean

out the verges and make them a clearway again over time, but we want you, that equivalent distance, to now plant up in the front of your property'," he says.

"We're not losing the conservation values, we're just moving them.

"Ten, 15 years ago, all of our shires in this state had what was called primary and secondary fire breaks.

"We used certain main roads to act as a fire break.

"That's been thrown out the window because nothing can be compliant any more because the fuel loadings are so high it's pointless.

"We need to treat the roadside verges from fenceline to fenceline where possible."

Mr Avent is urging locals to read the council's draft Roadside Conservation Management Plan and program of roadside slashing for fire mitigation, and also contribute feedback about the management of rural roadsides.

Yapeen beekeeper Noel Taylor with what’s left of his $100,000 shed and contents.

A devastating shed fire at Yapeen in recent days spotlights a wider issue of dogs attacking livestock in the area.

Late afternoon, April 25 just gone, beekeeper and honey producer Noel Taylor was using gas to melt hive wax in his big honey production shed when his neighbour across the road phoned with the shocking news that two dogs were attacking his expensive dorper ewes and lambs.

Mr Taylor, 75, immediately jumped in his car and went to stop the dogs, managing to catch and secure them both.

Mr Taylor said he then delivered both dogs to their owner and it was while all this was happening that his large honey production shed containing valuable honey, tools and equipment - all together valued at about $100,000– went up in flames.

By the time fire crews arrived on site, the shed and contents were fully alight.

While firefighters fought to stop the blaze spreading to the Taylors’ nearby house, the shed was completely destroyed, and with it the uninsured contents including $18,000 worth of honey and machinery ranging from a forklift to extracting equipment worth many tens of thousands of dollars.

“When I took the dogs back to the owner, the owner asked which one was the killer and I said 'they’ve both got blood on their mouths. They’re both killers',” Mr Taylor said.

As a result of the attack, Mr Taylor lost two ewes valued at $400 each and three lambs, with another six sheep injured, some so badly they may not survive either.

He now fears the dogs may return to attack again at any time.

“The council officer told me that if any dogs come back on the property I have legal rights to shoot them. But you can’t be in the paddock all night,” he said.

Like several other livestock owners in the immediate area and beyond, Mr Taylor told the Express the problem of dogs attacking livestock was increasing as more lifestyle residences filled the landscape, bringing people who may not realise their family pet has another side.

“People think their dog doesn’t ever leave home and it wouldn’t ever do that sort of thing if it did. But we’ve had examples of it. It’s usually two dogs on the job and once they get the taste of blood there’s no stopping them after that,” Mr Taylor said.

Not far across the paddocks at Guildford, farmer Bob Forde said about two months ago a dog attack on his property left four sheep dead and another badly injured, with memories of another shocking dog attack not likely to fade any time soon.

“In 2015 we lost 40 sheep in two attacks but when it went to court the only one they’d convict for was the one that was captured getting mauled to death right in front of the CCTV up at the house,” Mr Forde said.

“Because of the CCTV you could see the dog killing this sheep - but all the others were considered circumstantial even though there was a trail of dead sheep for about a kilometre from the house to the boundary fence. The owner had let the dog roam.

“My brother-in-law nearby has also lost 69 sheep in three attacks.”

Now beekeeper Mr Taylor, who also sustained burns to his head as his shed burnt down, has been left to battle for any hope of an insurance pay-out on the decimated shed structure.

“They’ve told me it’s not insured because it’s a commercial shed – and the contents definitely aren’t insured,” he said.

His pleas for dog owners to keep their pets properly secured at all times comes as the magistrates court in Castlemaine two Fridays back convicted an Irishtown man over a dog attack in February that left 12 sheep dead and 17 others injured at the property of Glenluce farmer Lance McDonald.

The court directed the owner of the two dogs involved in that attack to pay $4000 in fines, $2540 in costs, and compensation of $7116 to Mr McDonald. Both dogs involved in that attack have been destroyed.

“If the dog is put down people say 'oh poor dog'," Guildford's Mr Forde said.

"But nobody thinks about the terror and trauma of the sheep that are defenceless."

Take the bowelscan test

May is Rotary Bowelscan Month and the Castlemaine Rotary Club is once again distributing their bowelscan test kits to local pharmacies.

The initiative was kick started by the service organisation in 1982 and aims to encourage Aussies to pick up a test kit and undertake the test, which could save their life.

In Australia 80 people die from bowel cancer every week. This simple test could prevent you becoming a statistic.

You can pick up a bowel test kit from one of the three Castlemaine pharmacies or the Maldon Pharmacy for just $20. The kits will be available throughout the month of May. Castlemaine Rotary Club president Christine Barkla thanked the local pharmacies for their support of the important initiative.

"Many lives have been saved by detecting early bowel cancer using these kits," she said.

‘Suicide is preventable’

According to coronial data, the Mount Alexander region has a rate of suicide much higher than the Victorian average.

Research shows us that suicide is preventable if communities have appropriate services and information available and people know the signs to watch out for.

The Mount Alexander Suicide Response Group is encouraging people to attend a community forum on May 26 at the Castlemaine Town Hall to contribute to a growing conversation about how best to address priorities concerning mental health and suicide prevention.

Central Victorian Primary Care Partnership CEO Shelly Lavery said she was pleased the organisation could assist in providing a platform for the forum.

"We know that suicide is preventable, but to make a real difference we need people to tell us what they see as the priorities for their community," Ms Lavery said.

The event will open with a lived-experience speaker from local grassroots organisation ELM (Every Life Matters), who will share their own story and how they were able to get the support they needed. This will be followed by some brainstorming and discussion regarding the current issues and risk factors for suicidality or poor mental health in the

The interesting mix of people who make up the Kyneton community fascinates local artist Adam Lee. Lee is among 11 artists exploring their creative views of Kyneton in preparation for this year's Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial in October.

The nine-day event has commissioned the artists to present context-sensitive artwork in a variety of media across multiple sites throughout the town.

Its theme, 'Holding the Circle', represents a consideration of connection between people and holding together to create a safe space for sharing experiences.

Lee will share his personal reflections on Kyneton in works to be presented in the Kyneton Town Hall.

"I've lived in the Macedon Ranges most of my life and have always had a really strong connection with Kyneton through friends," he says.

"I think the community is a really interesting mix because you've got those generational families within Kyneton - farming families that have been there for a long, long time - and then you've got all these artists who've moved there because it's such a beautiful area and it's so much easier to work outside of Melbourne now."

Mid last year during the height of lockdown, Lee began working on five large paintings that will be installed in the town hall, which will be transformed into a very different space.

"I wanted to create a contemplative space," Lee says.

"There's many religious examples, temples, alters etc., but I didn't want it to have a religious connotation, I wanted it to be a space that you enter and become immediately aware of your body and your interaction with that space."

Lee has commissioned the talent of five local crafters who crochet, quilt and loom, and each will create a blanket to accompany the paintings.

"I call them prayer blankets, which function as objects that draw us into another way of seeing the paintings and interacting with them," he says.

"After the experience of last year and the lockdowns, it feels like the world is changing, the ground under our feet is changing, and in order to deal with that tension and make sense of it, I think we're all becoming more aware of the need for stillness and a slowing down.

"I'm interested in how art can function as a conduit for those types of questions."

Power of the pen

Local members of Amnesty International Castlemaine are inviting others to come and join them for a special 60th anniversary letter-writing event this Thursday evening.

Eve Lamb It's been said the pen is mightier than the sword and local members of Amnesty International have reason to believe it's a maxim that holds true.

To mark the 60th anniversary of Amnesty International, the local group have a special letter-writing event planned for this Thursday evening and they're inviting others to join them.

Castlemaine co-convener Bill Wiglesworth says the group will be getting together at the Five Flags Hotel this Thursday, May 13, at 6pm to celebrate the anniversary with a solid bout of letter writing advocacy against human rights abuses in locations world-wide.

"We're welcoming all members of the

community to come and join us," says Bill who's been writing letters to advocate against human rights abuses for many years.

"I began my involvement with Amnesty as a mentor for a student group at Mirboo North High School in 1976, and I’ve been active ever since," he says.

"Amnesty International has campaigned for human rights globally since 1961 and has over 10 million supporters from more than 150 countries.

"One of their most successful strategies in combating human rights abuses around the world is to write letters to the authorities responsible for the abuses.

"Thousands of political prisoners have been freed as a direct result of this advocacy."

Mr Wiglesworth says the Castlemaine group has been active for more than two decades and is still going strong.

"We have 25 people in our local group," he says.

"Every week from the Victorian office we get a list of Urgent Action Appeals and every second Thursday of the month we write direct letters on behalf of specific individuals. We have a track record of some success."

He says anyone wanting to join the group for some letter writing this Thursday evening should just bring a biro and an innate sense of justice.

Love to sing?

The Pollyphonics Choir has found its voice again after a year-long COVID-19 hiatus and is regrouping this Thursday in Woodend.

Conducted by vibrant choral conductor Polly Christie, this mixed voice choir sings a blend of soul, global folk, African rhythms and delicious harmonies.

Polly says the choir meets fortnightly and is open to all lovers of singing, especially those who have had some previous experience.

"Everyone who's been wanting and ready to sing can now do it, we're open to anyone just coming along for a sing for the first couple of weeks," Polly says.

"We'll be singing some of our easy songs that we've done - an Archie Roach song, an old '60s soul number that everyone get into and a Crowded House song - so it will be easy to get back into singing after not singing for such a long time."

Once up and running the choir will then begin rehearsing for performances later in the year including for the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival and another in partnership with a small classical ensemble in November.

"The first will be more of a cabaret style performance and then the next one is more serious performance," Polly says.

"It's not a beginner choir, so it is about people who have already sung in a choir before or have had some music training.

"We've been going for 12 years now, and this is the biggest break that we've ever had, but we've still got a really lovely core group that are beautiful singers together."

Agri-sector better prepared

Farmers will be better able to prepare for and respond to climate change through state government investment of almost $20 million to reduce emissions.

The Agriculture Sector Pledge has been developed by the government to work in partnership with industry over the next four years, to create a shared vision about the sector’s role in a net-zero emissions economy.

“Victoria is well positioned to be a leader in low-emissions agriculture and we have shown it is possible to include this critical sector in an emissions reduction plan, without compromising its growth or profitability,” Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas said.

A Victorian Agriculture and Climate Change Statement will be shaped by the Victorian Agriculture and Climate Change Council – an independent advisory council comprising farmers, industry leaders and climate change experts.

Funding will accelerate a range of projects, including $3.9 million for research into agriculture emissions reduction technologies and practices.

This includes flagship trials to reduce methane on dairy cow farms with feed additives like 3-NOP and seaweed, as well as collaborating on a national scale to enhance research and innovation.

A $15.4 million investment will provide information, tools and serv rvices v to support adaptation and climate risk management across the agriculture sector so farmers and growers can measure and reduce on-farm emissions.

This will include updating the Victorian Land Use Information System and building an Agriculture Climate Spatial Tool to assist farmers make tailored decisions based on different climate scenarios.

Direct grants from a $5 million pool will support up to 250 farmers to assess their climate risk and emissions profile and take action to reduce emissions and adapt to the changing climate.

“The Agriculture Sector Pledge unlocks opportunities for cross-sector coordination and tangible on-farm action,” VACCC chair Alexandra Gartmann said.

Separately, the government is supporting farmers through the $15.3 million Victorian Carbon Farming Program, which will provide incentives for landowners to sequester carbon by planting agroforestry and shelterbelt trees on their land while also increasing productivity and providing income.

Concert fundraiser

Friends of South Kyneton are holding a classical and contemporary concert on May 16.

The concert will be held at the Masonic Centre, Yaldwyn Street West with doors opening at 2pm for a 2.30pm start.

Tickets are on sale at the door.

Macedon Ranges Council has been overruled in a judgement on a three-lot subdivision with two attached double-storey houses in Gisborne.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has granted the permit for the 930 square metre lot at 11 Sansom Street.

The council had refused the permit on the grounds that it was supported by local policy and did not respect the neighbourhood’s character.

The VCAT member was satisfied that policy allowed for the development, and said the proposal can be modified to respect the character of Fersfield Road and its surrounds.

Tylden local Anthony Bonello will be running for late mate Matty alongside some of Matty’s closest friends and family at the Great Ocean Road Running Festival this May in a sea of purple.

Following 12 months of chemotherapy, surgery and ongoing treatments, the Lancefield local died in September 2018 at the age of 29.

Since his death, Matty’s closest friends and family have taken part in various running events around Australia to help raise money for testicular cancer research, and to support the hospital ward that supported Matty and his family during that time.

The night kicks off at 6.45pm and will include a Q&A with the film's creators and the launch of an exhibition of works by animal photographer Tamara Kenneally.

Kenneally, who also runs an animal shelter at Lancefield, has very generously donated her beautiful works to be sold to assist Redbox Wildlife Shelter with their care of the region's local injured wildlife.

Redbox is also currently facing a VCAT battle to prevent a music festival going ahead on a neighbouring property, with fears the event could spook the shelter's resident wildlife and lead to disastrous results.

Each donated canvas is 20 x 30 inches and is a limited edition one-of-a-kind. All are printed with archival, high-quality pigment inks on a cotton artist canvas and finished with a protective varnish. The canvas is stretched around a high-quality frame and wire hung.

The unique works will be selling for $350 each on the night.

Climate to be better considered in tenders?

Environmental benefit could be heavily weighted in Macedon Ranges’ future tender evaluations as the council reviews its procurement policy.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson is pushing for environmental benefit to carry a mandatory 15 per cent minimum weighting in selection criteria for tenders.

Urging councillors to open the discussion at April's ordinary meeting, Cr Anderson said it was a chance to prove commitment to reducing environmental impact.

“We have just passed a climate emergency as a council, so I think we need to show the community that we are serious about everything that we do that can impact on that climate emergency – and this is one of those things,” she said.

“We managed to get environmental benefit from an optional inclusion to a compulsory inclusion in the tender evaluation but our tender evaluations don’t have specific

weighting.

“I want the environment to definitely be part of the discussion and I want the starting point to be a 15 per cent minimum weighting.

“There are many things to look at within our procurement policy - but this is something that is really important.”

In March, Macedon Ranges became the latest council to join the Climate Emergency Declaration movement, which now incorporates more than 40 per cent of Australia's local councils.

One of the first of those councils was Darebin, which Cr Janet Pearce considered in her debate, concerned about the suggested heavy weighting for the Ranges.

She said Darebin's policy had weighted environmental benefit at five per cent while social benefit was 10 per cent, and highlighted there were many factors to consider.

“My concern is the 15 per cent,” she said. "At the mo-

ment we don’t have any weighting – so that, to me, is a discussion in itself.

“I want to have a really robust holistic discussion in a briefing, I want to hear what other councils are doing… there’s a lot we can learn from others.”

Cr Rob Guthrie said the motion would ensure environmental benefit was part of the discussion when councillors undertook their annual review of the policy.

“What we’re saying through this motion is that we’re fair dinkum about environmental benefits and we want it considered in all tender evaluations,” he said.

“We put a lot of tenders out there so I think it’s important that we demonstrate our continuing support for environmental benefits to the community.”

All Victorian councils must review their procurement policy every year. Macedon Ranges must endorse its policy by the end of June, along with the council’s annual budget.

The fake emails claim to be from 'myGov' and include screen shots of the myGovID app.

The email asks people to click a link to verify their identity using a 'secure form' that takes them to a fake myGov page requesting personal identifying information and banking details. myGovID is an app that can be used to prove who you are when accessing government online services. ATO systems, myGov and myGovID have not been compromised.

Launched over the weekend, Someone to Watch Over Me is subtitled The Better Angels of Our Nature and features photographic artwork by Castlemaine's Michael Wolfe in a collaboration with writer Kirsten Krauth.

Castlemaine-based Krauth has written poetry in response to Wolfe's photographs that capture images of sculptural angels in public locations ranging from St Arnaud to St Kilda.

"These really are about optimism, hope and a triumph over death," Wolfe says.

"It seems like a vain hope but it's a hope nonetheless."

Wolfe says the project, which saw him photographing imposing angels in locations including Ballarat, Bendigo, Melbourne, Chewton and Castlemaine, came about partly as a response to the troubles and turmoil witnessed in the United States under the former Trump administration last year - and the social division that involved.

"It's definitely also a COVID project and comes out of my belief that humans are fundamentally good to each other and care about each other," the artist says.

He concedes that while he personally does not belief in elegant winged and haloed beings that transport human souls to glorious, musical post-life hereafters, he certainly appreciates the values angels represent.

The feed-in tariff (FiT) is the rate paid by your electricity retailer for energy fed back into the grid from your solar power system.

It is set annually by the Essential Services Commission with any changes coming into effect on July 1.

Financial impact

For a 6.6kW solar power system – the most popular size through MASH – you will get around $156 less a year for your solar exports when the FiT drops to 6.7 cents.

This assumes you use 50 per cent of the solar power you generate in your home and export the rest to the grid.

So that's the downside.

But how much are the total savings with a solar power system at the lower FiT? There's two parts to working this out.

First is calculating the amount you save by using your solar power rather than buying it from the grid. That's a saving of about $1114 a year. (Worked out by calculating what it would have cost if you had to buy 50 per cent of the power you use from the grid at 25 cents per kilowatt hour).

The second part of the calculation is working out the money you make by exporting your excess solar to the grid and getting paid the feed-in tariff. This is about $299 assuming you export 50 per cent of your solar power at 6.7 cents per kilowatt hour.

So the total savings you'll make will be about $1413 a year ($1114 + $299) with a

That compares to total savings of about $1569 a year at the 10.2 cent feed-in tariff for a 6.6kW system and same assumptions.

Payback The good news is that the payback on a new solar power system is only marginally affected by the drop in the feed-in tariff.

Assuming you qualify for the current Solar Victoria Rebate of $1850, the payback for the above example changes from about 2.8 years (at the 10.2 cent FiT) to 3.1 years (at the 6.7 cent FiT), based on the price of a standard solar system through MASH. That’s still an attractive payback figure in anyone's book!

Solar makes sense There’s no doubt that a well-sized solar system can make financial sense but there are a number of variables to consider that can affect your payback and the above results may not be achievable in your circumstances.

Tree register needed B Phillips, MULGA Maldon Urban Landcare (MULGA) agrees with the concerns expressed by BJ Read from Newstead ('A terrible shame', Opinions, May 5) about protecting our old trees, native or non-native, and the need for a Significant Tree Register for the Mount Alexander Shire Council area.

Starting in 2017, MULGA has undertaken a major project to survey indigenous eucalypts that have been growing in the Maldon area from before European settlement, pre 1852.

Given that the vast majority of the original forest in our area was cut down during gold-mining times, these remnant eucalypts are indeed ‘living treasures’. We have surveyed 274 trees on private (9%) or public (18%) land and roadsides managed

by MASC (73%).

We provided the survey data (species, GPS location, estimated age) for the first 97 trees to council officers in 2017 and this data has been included on the council’s mapping system, thus enabling council staff to check if there are any significant trees in an area when planning work.

In three meetings with council officers over the last two years, we have provided them with data for the additional trees for inclusion on the mapping system, however we are unsure if this has occurred. We have also been advocating for greater protection for the pre-1852 eucalypts, and have been told that there is no need for a Significant Tree Register to be established, though the reasons for this decision are not clear to us.

We urge the council to establish a Significant Tree Register for native and non-native old trees and to provide greater protection for them, as they are such an important part of our cultural and natural environment.

Hypocrisy in the air Blair Fraser, Kyneton In light of the recent news that Bapcor (a multi-million dollar international conglomerate, listed on the stock exchange) purchased the local Autopro store in Kyneton and is turning it into a Burson auto parts franchise, my question is this... Where are all of the people now that were opposed

to businesses like McDonalds coming to town?

Will they boycott the new parts store and continue to support the locally owned and operated Kyneton auto spares in High Street or do they only care when a smashed avo sandwich is on the menu?

I am personally not against such a business coming to town. Competition is great but I can smell a bit of hypocrisy in the air.

Hearing that our neighbour’s peach tree is infested with Queensland fruit fly that never frequented this area before may seem like just a nuisance rather than another threat to our food supply.

The excellent series screening on ABC TV at present, Greta Thunberg: A year to change the world, gives a sobering picture of how climate change is affecting regions globally as well as providing insight into this extraordinarily courageous and articulate young woman. What can we as individuals living in country Victoria do to make a positive difference?

As well as making changes in our own lives to reduce our carbon footprint, we can call on our state and federal governments to enact strong measures to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. The climate has already reached 1.1 degrees of warm-

ing and is expected to reach 1.5 degrees in the 2030s, so we don’t have much time.

Australia must stop burning and exporting fossil fuels and transition to renewable energies. Deforestation must cease to preserve our wildlife and water supply and keep carbon in the ground. COVID-19 has shown us that governments can take drastic and decisive actions when necessary.

One way to make our voices heard is to join the school students' Strike for Climate on Friday May 21. Events will be held in Melbourne and regional towns like Bendigo and Castlemaine. Ignoring global warming will not make it go away: climate inaction is costing us the Earth.

May 8 marks Victory in Europe Day, an opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all who served during the Second World War in defence of our nation in Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

On September 3, 1939, Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced that Australia was at war. This began five years and eight months of Australian involvement in fighting in the European theatre and on May 7, 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender on all fronts, ending the conflict in Europe.

The following day, May 8, 1945, the day the surrender came into effect, was declared VE Day. Australians, including recently released prisoners of war, began to return home. Although celebrations were buoyant overseas, in Australia they were more subdued as the war against Japan continued with no end yet in sight.

Almost one million Australians served in the Second World War. In the war against Germany and her European allies, some 10,000 died, around 10,000 were wounded and almost 8000 became prisoners of war.

On Saturday we remembered the courage shown by our service men and women throughout the war in Europe. Lest we forget.

New strain of deadly virus detected The Australian veterinarian-led research project, Horses as Sentinels, has identified a new strain of the deadly Hendra virus as the cause of a previously unexplained horse death in September 2015.

Hendra virus is highly lethal in both horses and humans, with mortality rates approximately 79 per cent and 60 per cent respectively. The originally recognised strain of Hendra virus has resulted in the deaths of four humans and more than 100 horses in Australia since 1994.

The newly recognised variant has not been detected previously by routine biosecurity testing in horses. In addition, the new strain has been detected in grey-headed flying fox samples from Adelaide in 2013. Partial sequences of the variant have also been detected in flying foxes in other states. Greyheaded flying foxes migrate and their range includes parts of southern Australia, which previous advice classed as low risk – with some interpreting this to mean negligible risk of Hendra virus spill over. Up until now, the original strain of Hendra virus has only been known to occur within the range of black flying foxes and spectacled flying foxes.

The Horses as Sentinels research team has developed updated diagnostic laboratory techniques capable of identifying the new

strain, and will be sharing them with relevant laboratories. They have also established that the current Hendra virus horse vaccine is expected to be equally effective against the new strain.

The research team have alerted chief veterinary officers and the chief health officers are being informed. All members of the Australian Veterinary Association have also been alerted to the implications of this discovery for both human and animal health.

Significance for Veterinarians and Horse Owners The finding indicates that HeV should be considered as a differential diagnosis in unvaccinated horses anywhere in Australia that flying foxes are present, and that unwell, suspect horses which return an initial negative Hendra virus test should continue to be treated with the same caution as a Hendra virus positive case, until testing for the new variant is performed.

There are a number of measures that people who work closely with horses can take to reduce the risk of infection with HeV and other viruses, such as vaccination, good biosecurity, use of personal protective equipment and good hygiene.

Stan Nicholls has been remembered by friends as family as a quiet achiever and a gentle man.

He was one of the original members of the Hesket-Kerrie Fire Brigade when it was formed in September 1966, with much help from the Woodend Fire Brigade at the time, and 30-year-old Stan immediately volunteered as second lieutenant.

He became first lieutenant in 1973 and captain in 1983, and held these roles again 1986 and 1988 to 1996, respectively.

Stan served as a lieutenant for 19 years and as captain for 11 years and remained an active member until 2011, when he was 75 years old, and in 2016 received his 50 Year Medal.

He was also a Life Member of the Brigade.

Stan was a regular attendee at dances for the Woodend Fire Brigade and also at the Kerrie Hall.

He was proud to see the HesketKerrie Brigade grow over the years and of the new facility that was opened in 2015.

Stan was also remembered as a strong and active local sportsman. He was a life member of the Hanging Rock Tennis Club and of Hanging Rock Racing Club where he spent many years performing volunteer work at the track.

He joined the Woodend Bowling Club in 1990 and was a keen and active member for the next 30 years and

formed part of several grand final and premiership teams.

He played a total of 349 games for the club, and would have played more if his health had allowed him.

He was a regular attendee at working bees, and served as a selector and on the match committee.

Stan was also a keen footballer, playing more than 400 games for the Hesket Football Club, having made his debut in the senior side at the age of 14 starting on the wing, and during his time he played in virtually every position on the field.

He played on the half-back flank in their one and only premiership in 1960, when Hesket defeated Lancefield 10.14 (64) to 6.19 (55). He also had a reputation for hardly ever missing a training session.

His 300th game came during the 1971 season, which was a club record, and it was reported in all major papers at the time.

The club presented him with a gold medal inscribed to Stan Nicholls and on the reverse side ‘300th game H.F.C.’. To top off his excellent 1971 season, he took out the Most Consistent Player Award.

When Hesket and Woodend merged in 1988, Stan played a few more games and also coached the Under 15 team for more than 100 games, including a premiership victory in 1980.

Stan was celebrated for his fantastic contribution to the community for more than 60 years as a valued member of the fire brigade, keen sportsman and leader.

Wombat Forest Vineyard celebrated its locals with a dedicated event of fun and relaxation at the end of last month.

The vineyard hosts a Locals Day each year to show appreciation for everyone who has supported the locally owned family business throughout the year.

Guests had the chance to enjoy the boutique in a spectacular bush setting with Trentham musician Jared Brentnall providing acoustic tunes and a special duet with his young daughter which captured hearts.

There's been a noticeable wave of regional migration after COVID-19 in 2020 according to Castlemaine legal firm Robertson Hyetts.

They have found a 67 per cent rise in property transactions over summer in central Victoria, in comparison to the same time last year. First home buyers, families and retiring baby boomers are part of the noticeable wave of regional migration after COVID-19.

Robertson Hyetts director Janelle Brown said last spring and summer were some of the firm’s busiest.

“We saw a big increase in buyers purchasing vacant land in spring and that didn’t slow down over the summer," Janelle said.

“They’re plotting a move to Bendigo and Castlemaine, where they can split their working week between home and office.

“The lockdowns appear to be prompting people to reassess their living and working lifestyle, whether that be a desire to continue working from home for part of the week, or wanting a larger garden for their children to play in,” she said.

The property market in Bendigo and Castlemaine has gone ahead really fast in recent years. It has great proximity to Melbourne, regional Victoria, and to the New South Wales border.

“Regional Victoria has plenty to offer in terms of work and lifestyle benefits for those dreaming of more space, while still being close to Melbourne.

Five key stamp duty facts Every property purchase comes with costs beyond the deposit and mortgage. But, it’s the amount of land transfer duty (often referred to as stamp duty) payable that’s likely to surprise you. To complicate things, there’s no standard rate of stamp duty in Australia. Instead, each state has its own rates, and the money collected goes directly to the state for reinvesting in various sectors.

Here Robertson Hyetts lawyer Greta Sabatino shares the five key things you need to know about stamp duty when purchasing a property in Victoria.

1. Payment of stamp duty Stamp duty is a one-off payment, with a due date that varies state by state. In Victoria, you are required to pay the stamp duty within 30 days of the transfer and before the title is transferred to your name. In most cases this means payment must be made at the time of settlement.

2. The amount of stamp duty payable The stamp duty you pay on the purchase of a property will be calculated as a percentage of the total cost of that property. The exact percentage you pay is a sliding scale that calculates the percentage rate depending on which threshold your ‘property value’ falls into. You can use the State Revenue Office stamp duty calculator to obtain the basic estimate of what you might have to pay.

3. Stamp duty concessions in Victoria Some property purchasers may be eligible for an exemption or discount on stamp duty. In Victoria, that includes first home buyers, pensioners, principal place of residence buyers, farmers, regional commercial or industrial property buyers and charities.

4. Stamp duty in 2021 In Victoria, purchasers of residential property after 25 November 2020 and before 1 July 2021 have another reason to smile. To stimulate the economy, the government has introduced a 50 per cent reduction in stamp duty for new residential property purchases, and 25 per cent for existing residential properties and vacant land, where the dutiable value is less than $1 million. Purchasers may benefit from the waiver more than once if multiple contracts are entered into before 1 July.

5. Stamp duty concession for off-the-plan purchases The Victorian government does offer off-the-plan concessions to some who are buying their principal place of residence. However, there are a number of requirements that are outlined on the Victorian State Revenue Office Off-the-plan duty concession page that you need to be aware of, such as date of contract, start of construction and place of residence.

Aptly, the last of eight races on the program was taken out by local galloper Magnum Bullet, much to the delight of trainer Mick Sell and his large group of owners.

Magnum Bullet made it two wins in succession at Kyneton, having also won there on April 17 when he scored by nearly two lengths in a Maiden, first-up from a four months spell.

The three-year-old thrived after the run, and was in fine fettle for the Prendergast Earthmoving BM58 Handicap over 1200m last week.

Again ridden by Craig Robertson, Magnum Bullet was sent out a $6 chance against tougher company, and came through the test well to hang on and beat favourite Fortune Follows.

Sell, whose stables are close to the racecourse, said it was likely Magnum Bullet would have his next outing in a race at Ballarat on May 19. The galloper has now earned $37,785 from eight career starts. His two wins have come on Kyneton tracks rated good and soft.

Riding honours at Kyneton went to the in-form John Allen with four winners – Tread Softly, The Spaniard, Handful and Saint of Katowice. Allen is a hot favourite to take out the Victorian jockeys’ premiership.

BREAK FROM RACING With the colder months approaching, K&HRRC takes a break from racing until the new season in September.

The club thanks all its members, sponsors, trainers, industry participants and patrons for support during the 2020-2021 season, when racing was able to continue in Victoria despite the impact of the COVID pandemic.

It’s certainly been different – no crowds at the Kyneton Cup in November, and the two iconic New Year’s Day and Australia Day meetings traditionally held at Hanging Rock having to be transferred to at Kyneton A wet start and heavy track at Kyneton resulted in a modified jump out program on Tuesday.

Impressive at Wodonga Bill West

Long-time trainer and clerk of the course Bob Challis was pleased with the convincing win by three-year-old filly Rose Of Bordeaux at Wodonga on Friday.

Having her eighth race start, Rose Of Bordeaux has been lightly raced and broke through in the 1590m Wodonga Jewellers Maiden Plate.

The filly’s previous placings had been at Benalla and Corowa, and Challis and partner Liz Irwin hope the effort at Wodonga is a sign of better things to come.

They operate Challis Racing, a breeding and racing complex on a property along the Bolinda-Darraweit Road, an area perhaps better known for trotting establishments.

Their horses gallop on the Kyneton track several times a week.

Rose Of Bordeaux started at odds of $9.50, and was midfield before rider Jack Hill made his move.

Irwin said the filly was bred on strong staying lines, and it was hoped she could cover more distance in the future.

“She’s pulled up well, and is out in the paddock now,” Irwin said at the weekend.

The filly seems to prefer racing on a light preparation, and a decision is yet to be made on when she will have her next start.

Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley won the last race on a nineevent program at Donald on Saturday.

Draiochta, ridden by Craig Robertson, took out the 0-58 Handicap by a narrow margin from Conconi.

Starting at $8.50, Draiochta was Stanley’s 20th winner for the current racing season.

Historic day for Rangers Kyneton District Soccer Club kicked off its first round of the 2021 season at home on Saturday in perfect sunny conditions.

It was a historic day for the Rangers, as they fielded two Under 9 girls teams for the first time.

They ended up playing each other in the non-competitive division with an exciting 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, the Under 14 Mixed team won its competitive match against Spring Gully in an 11-0 landslide. On Sunday, the senior men and women's teams played at home. Unfortunately they couldn't secure a win for Mother's Day. This Saturday all of the games will be at Barkly Square again with the Under 13 girls team kicking off at 12.20pm.

The games will run all afternoon with the club switching on their new lights about

5.30pm during the senior men's match.

President Ron Cole said the club was extremely happy to have received a long overdue lighting upgrade at Barkly Square.

"The new lighting will not only make training a lot better but will also improve safety for players while they train," Cole said.

"The upgrade also gives the club the opportunity to be able to host night fixtures in both seniors and juniors."

According to several long term members, fairways “were in the best ever condition”.

Surprisingly some of the club’s best golfers played some very ordinary shots, before concentration returned and better scores eventuated on the back nine.

Grade championship leaders after two rounds: A – Mick Squire 76, 78 – 154.

B – Scott Williams 89, 91 – 180; C – John Freestone 99, 97 – 196.

Mick Nicholls Jnr was the day’s winner with 89-20-69, from Mal Mottram 79-7-72 and Mitch Atlas 83-10-73. Nicholls, Williams and Andrew Clement were NTP. The women’s championship began on Wednesday, with Darlene Baker taking an early lead with a 92 off the stick.

Elaine Scanlon’s great form continues with her 102-32-70 the day’s best nett score (and best putter with 31) , from Baker 92-17-75 and Chris Manktelow 11433-81.

IN PENNANT FINAL Romsey has reached the DDGA division 3 handicap pennant final with a vital final round 5/2 victory over Trentham at Kilmore.

The big, old trees caught out players out who took risks rather than chip back onto the fairways.

Individual winners for Romsey were Mottram, Williams, SteveWilkins, Keith Hocking and Chris vanDerVliet.

In round two of the women’s division 2 at Lancefield last week, Romsey had a strong 4/1 victory over Trentham, as well as enjoying the hospitality of the home club which had the bye.

Trentham There were some excellent scores in the four-ball event at Trentham on Saturday.

Winners were Liam Murray (handicap 11) and Adrian Sisk (22) with a fine 58 nett; runners-up were Leif LouwenSkovdam (4) and Chris Linton (25) with 60, and Colin Wilson and Simon Overden finished third on 62.

The event served as a qualifier for the doubles knockout.

The women played for the monthly medal, with a tie between respective A and B grade winners Terri Callaghan and Alex Evered with nett 74. They will play-off for the medal.

Jan Stephenson topped C-grade with 76.

Woodend Woodend ladies played for the May medal last Wednesday in cold and windy conditions.

The medal winner was Maureen Warrender with 106-35-71.

Veronica Sullivan won the play-off in the final of the Silver Spoon, and is now eligible to play in the Victorian final in Melbourne later in the year.

GOLF results Kyneton A prolific winner of many events at Kyneton Golf Club over the years, Denise Murphy can still steal the limelight.

On Friday, Murphy took out the A-grade prize at the Yvonne Boyd Bowl event at Neangar Park, aided by a hole-in-one on the long par 3 16th.

Murphy (handicap 14) followed up with a winning 38 points at Kyneton on Saturday. Robyn MacRae (25) was runner-up with 36.

Men’s stableford: Jason McClure (9) blitzed the A-grade field with 41 points, from Terry Gamble 34, and William Dodd (20) took out B-grade with 39, from Chris Kanaris 37.

Quarter-finals of the RSL singles knockout on Saturday: Bar yr Keane d David Austin 4/3, David Ryan d Paul Law 3/2, Glenn Cook d Terry Kot 1-up. Mark Sciberas v Jonathan Beachey on Friday.

Captain Marg Scoble was in fine form in the women’s May medal last Tuesday, with 94-23-71 from Julie McKellar and Lois Scott both nett 73. Scoble and McKellar were also NTPs.

The second round of the Dr Groves Trophy will be played next Tuesday when his granddaughter, Rosemary Dowling, will present the trophy.

Women’s pennant last week saw two Kyneton teams keen to beat one another: The result was an overall tie with Jenny Kerr and Lorraine Ryan halving their match.

Michelle Werner lost to Julie Harris 1 down, Teaota Davies lost to Robyn MacRae 2/1, Marian Orr d Joan Gibbs 3/2, Liz Turang d Jenny McSwain 2/1.

Lancefield Low-marker Denis Davenport stole the show with a one over par round in Saturday’s stableford.

Davenport’s 40 stableford points from a 5 handicap was the best of the day. B – Ed Godek (15) 38; C—Ron McLeod (19) 37.

Anne Robinson 110-37-73 won the women’s monthly medal on Wednesday, from Di Brennan 98-21-77 (also NTP and least putts).

Mighty Macedon, Bombers’ blitz Bill West After four rounds of Riddell League football, Riddell and Macedon are the only unbeaten senior teams – with victories in entirely different fashion on Saturday.

The Bombers were rampant at Romsey, restricting the shellshocked previously high-scoring Redbacks to just ONE goal in the first three quarters.

On Saturday night, under new lights at Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon again found a way to win narrowly, this time shocking the highly rated Wallan by four points in a low-scoring struggle for supremacy.

For the second week in succession at Romsey there was an ugly melee, this time triggered when the tallest player on the field in Nathan Hoy crashed into a Riddell opponent with the ball near a large congregation of spectators well into the second quarter.

Angry skirmishes broke out next to and over the boundary line, with ruckman Hoy eventually red carded.

The melee was close to where there was a similar flare-up against Lancefield on May 1. Romsey’s Cameron Dawson was not reported at the time, but under later scrutiny on video checking, he eventually ended up with a five-match suspension for striking Tigers’ playing coach Tom Waters.

All senior matches in the RDFNL are videoed and players can get ‘pinged’ even if umpires do not see (or report) them involved in reportable action.

Riddell has had 'the wood' on Romsey for several seasons, and so it proved to be the case again.

Both have relatively young sides, but Riddell made sure the Romsey slick ball movers were kept under control, with heavy pressure applied.

players at half time, when Riddell held a match-winning lead and Romsey had just one goal (a long kick from Hoy in the first term) on the board.

From the time Callum Williamson slotted the first goal for the Bombers, the Redbacks’ defence was under pressure.

Romsey did not resemble the previous free-flowing combination that had overwhelmed Woodend-Hesket and Lancefield with goal-scoring sprees.

Understandably Riddell supporters and players were elated at the long break. The Bombers kicked another three goals to nil in the third term.

“It’s embarrassing ... there’s no way they’re a 10-goal better side than us,” Kennedy told his players, calling on them to lift and win the last quarter.

The Bombers appeared to take the foot off the pedal, and Romsey produced a face-saving five goals in the last term.

Riddell coach Justin Belleville had every reason to be elated, and he said the Bombers had a game plan to apply plenty of pressure, and players had risen to the occasion.

“We’re a young side, and we will continue to improve,” the coach predicted.

Armed with plenty of pace, and led by speedy Matt Panuccio on-field, the Bombers can’t wait for their next big test against Wallan at Magpieland on May 29.

Riddell’s new players have assimilated well, and Romsey can only take stock.

The Bombers kicked 23 goals and kept an undermanned Romsey scoreless in the reserves match. Selectors have plenty of options.

“Credit to Riddell. We were completely outplayed for three quarters,” Kennedy said after the match.

He saw the bye this weekend as a positive, allowing his players the opportunity to freshen up.

MACEDON RESILIENT On Saturday, night football and netball came to Macedon, and the Cats were ready for the challenge from Wallan.

Coach Al Meldrum (pictured) has the Cats playing good team football, with their ability to shut down opponents vital.

President Andrew Dick said there was a great attendance from spectators far and wide, with some great games played.

Macedon is proving very hard to beat in tight games, with a draw against Riddell, and wins by less than a goal against Diggers Rest and now Wallan.

Three goals straight in the last term against Wallan got the Cats home, and there were scenes of jubilation as the Cats sang their club song after the match.

Match of the round

Saturday’s drawcard match in the fifth round of Riddell League football takes place at Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend.

The Hawks are coming off the bye, following a much-needed victory over Melton Centrals that put their season back on track.

Opponents Macedon are unbeaten, with a draw against Riddell in the opening round followed by epic low-scoring victories by less than a goal against strong finals contenders in Diggers Rest and Macedon.

Woodend-Hesket sustained an absolute drubbing when Romsey kicked a remarkable 27.4 at Gilbert Gordon Oval in round two on April 24.

Coach Ben Tankard, formerly in charge of Macedon before crossing to the Hawks, will have to ensure his side thinks positively against the Cats, who have the ability to reduce matches against any quality opponents to low-scoring contests.

Macedon coach Al Meldrum has his team playing good football, and they will be expecting to combat whatever the Hawks can offer.

The other three matches should be won by the favourites; it would be a boilover if there was an upset.

Lancefield won against Western Rams on Saturday, and the Tigers will try and be competitive at home to Diggers Rest; ladder leader Riddell will be looking for a percentage booster against Western Rams, and Wallan need to bounce back against Melton Centrals after their four-point defeat in the night match at Macedon.

Romsey has the bye, something welcomed by coach Paul Kennedy.

Current ladder positions after four rounds are: Riddell 14 pts (155.43%), Macedon 14 (105.20), Wallan 12 (374.19), Diggers Rest 8 (147.71), Romsey 8 (115.02), Woodend-Hesket 8 (68.71), Lancefield8 59.23, Melton Centrals 4 (68.66), Western Rams 4 (14.16).

Meldrum and his players are not getting carried away, knowing there is another big clash ahead at Woodend this Saturday.

A WIN AT LAST While Lancefield may have been off target up forward, kicking 7.16, it was enough for the Tigers to win their first game for the season by seven goals against Western Rams (formerly known as Rockbank).

The Rams face an uphill battle on current form, and would appear to have the wooden spoon already wrapped up.

Diggers Rest finally found the ability to kick a big score, beating Melton Centrals by 101-points.

SPORTS wrap Dominant performances in MCDFNL There were some dominant displays and big wins in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League last Saturday.

Harcourt travelled to Dunolly determined to see if all their sides could make a clean sweep for the second time.

They did just that with the top-of-the-table seniors leading the way with a 40-goal haul against the Hawks.

Harcourt kicked four goals to three in the opening term and went on to add another 26 goals to win by 231 points.

Zachary Denahy and Alex Code led from the front with six goals each. Best on ground Jack Douglass kicked five along Thomas Walters. Ben Leech, Tomas Stefaniw, Kristian Bruce and Paul Chaplin kicked three each. Darby Semmens chipped in two in another top performance, as did Sam Gale. Other standouts were Michael Pilcher, Kayne Davidson with a goal each and Kaleb McBride and Lachlan Mitchell who were among the best on ground.

Maldon also triumphed over Talbot at Talbot Recreation Reserve.

Talbot led at the first change but Maldon put their foot on the throttle in the second term booting six goals to one to grab a 29 point lead at half time.

Talbot lifted in the third term kicking two goals to Maldon's one but the damage had been done and the Dons' went on with the job in the final term to win by 30 points.

The Under 11.5s saw Maldon defeated Talbot by 59 points. Harcourt defeated Dunolly by 78 points and Newstead had a solid win over Rovers by 54 points.

NETBALL On the netball court Harcourt had a clean sweep with wins in all grades. In A Grade Harcourt 74 d Dunolly 27.

Saints stay on winning streak Sainter

Trentham’s footballers were excited to be able to test themselves against the MCDFNL elite when they faced Carisbrook on Saturday.

Both Trentham sides passed the test with flying colours, and look forwarded to away matches against Newstead and Talbot over the next two weekends.

The senior Saints were the better side throughout. Their quick ball movement and hard running proved too much for the visiting Redbacks.

At half time it was 6.5 to 0.5, and the final tally was 13.9 (87) to 3.8 (26).

Trentham has won all four matches, and has a healthy percentage of 262.57% in third spot on the ladder.

Joel Cowan led the with three goals, and Luke Whitehouse, Jeremy Steen, and Alister Ferrier scored two, with one each from Jake Keogh, Joel Dovaston, Dylan Holden and Lewis Bruton.

Best for the Saints were Taylor Ford, Ferrier, Jack Mighell, Cowan, Dylan Holden and Tom Walker.

The Reserves had to battle hard before running over the Redbacks in the second half for a 13.14 to 3.6 victory.

Goals came from Joshua Murphy 4, Trent Davey and Tristan Newman 2, J. Gray, M. Steen, Quinn Kinnell, Mitch Quarrier and Brian Cole.

Davey, Tom Boyer, Newham, Cole, Kinnell and Quarrier were among the best.

All Trentham’s junior sides suffered tough defeats.

GAME ABANDONED The A-grade netball game was abandoned in the second quarter due to a Trentham player sustaining a serious injury.

Each side gains two points.

After a close battle throughout, the Bgraders ended in a 29-29 tie, with Jade Cass and Stacey Parks named as best.

After scores were tied at the first change, the Trentham C-graders ‘ran out of legs’ with Carisbrook winning 34-25. Sophie Sutherland and Maddy Matheson were named in the best list.

The Saints’ junior netballers struggled against stronger opposition, with Carisbrook taking the points in all junior matches.

Bulldogs dominate P Pies ies

Gisborne footballers and netballers were absolutely dominant in a percentageboosting performance across all seven matches played at Gardiner Reserve against Castlemaine on Saturday.

But the Bulldogs know they will face a different calibre of opposition in the round six clash at Eaglehawk this weekend.

Determined to bounce back after their loss to South Bendigo, the senior footballers were dominant from the onset.

Having ace forward Paddy McKenna back lifted the confidence level of the whole side, and he finished with 12 goals and topped an impressive best player list.

The Magpies were clearly shell shocked as the home side rattled on nine first-quarter goals – the margin rocketed out to 100 points by half time after the Magpies lost a couple of players through injury.

The same trend continued in the second half, and a 33.27 (225) to 2.1 (13) final tally boosted Gisborne’s percentage to 193.73% and fourth spot on the ladder.

The match against second-placed Eaglehawk is ultra important on Saturday.

In the earlier Under 18s and Reserves matches, the Bulldogs also reigned supreme, irrespective of how had the Magpies tried to stem the tide.

Plenty of possessions but squandered shots for goals produced 4.10 for the first term, but improved accuracy as the coach swung some changes enabled a final score of 24.26 to 0.2.

Wary of Castlemaine U18s who have shown some good form, the Gisborne U18s also faced the challenge of maintaining the high standards set against South Bendigo. Luke Ellings and Harry Thomas dominated early, and Gisborne grew in confidence as the match progressed.

Ryder Blizzard had his best game for the club. Sam Wilson and Thomas each finished with five goals, and D. Lockens and C. Flynn three in a final tally of 21.15 to Castlemaine 1.1.

Best for Gisborne were Ellings, Blizzard, Flynn, J. Hammerling, Thomas and J. Normington.

NETBALL POWER AND TENACITY Gisborne’s netball teams showed their power and tenacity, coming away with all four wins for the second week in a row.

While Castlemaine battled hard, the Bulldogs delivered four quarters of overwhelming pressure, with scoreboard margins being absolute blowouts.

Highlights included a 109-19 win for the 17&U side and a 99-15 margin for the B Reserve girls.

Too strong for Tigers Tiger Talk

Kyneton had high hopes of positive showings against Eaglehawk on Saturday, but the visitors proved too strong in the main football and netball matched.

It was the Pride Cup round at the Showgrounds, backed strongly by both clubs.

The one redeeming feature for the Tigers was the excellent 46 points win by their Under 18s footballers.

In the senior and reserves football, Eaglehawk seized the early initiative and displayed their great depth as a club.

The damage in the senior match as done in the second quarter, with the home side goalless and trailing by 39 points at the half time interval.

The Tigers fought very hard in the second half, showing greater commitment and eventually going down by 41 points -- 15.19 to 9.14.

The outcome leaves Eaglehawk in second place on the ladder, and Kyneton seventh.

Maryborough at the Showgrounds this Saturday.

In the reserves, the skilful Hawks had far too much depth, and ran out winners by 82 points -- 13.13 to 1.1.

Earlier, the lads in the U18s continued their good form, and played some great football to achieve a 11.10 to 4.6 victory.

SENIOR WOMEN Eaglehawk kicked a couple of early goals before the Tigers settled in the CVFLW Pride Cup match.

The local girls fought hard in the second term, with the ball in the forward line for long periods, but goals proving elusive. With great support from the home crowd, the Tigers fought the match right out, Eaglehawk winning 9.7 (61) to 4.5 (29).

Best players were U. Van Dyk, T. Ainslie, N. Korinfsky and J. Savoia.

NETBALL ROUND-UP The Eaglehawk netballers were strong and talented across the board, with Kyneton A-graders doing best for the locals with a 58-43 defeat.

New combinations in A Reserve were promising with good defensive play and turnovers until the visitors took control.

A strong last term cut the winning margin to 48-25. Determined goalkeeper Naveah Brown was outstanding and secured the incentive award.

Although the B-graders went down 45-15 there were some promising performances. Dynamic defensive duo Loryn Savoia and Miriam McIntyre shard the incentive award.

A special mention to star wing defence Annie Dodgshun as well, and Ash O’Gara’s versatility shone through in several positions due to captain Teghan sustaining calf niggles.

B Reserve captain Alisha was a notable ‘out’ with a major injury, and the girls rallied with Darby Kelly a jet in midcourt, and tall board star recruit Alayne Burns came up with 14 defensive rebounds to claim the incentive award.

Potential and talent across the 17 and Under side is apparent, and they should be formidable as the season progresses.

The Hawks prevailed 47-29, but there was plenty to like about the Tigers after their slow start.

A-grade game was not played, with Castlemaine unable to field a team at this level this season.

The Bulldogs hope to bring this momentum forward against Eaglehawk, which usually proves to be a blockbuster round.
