‘Valley does not need this’

HAZELWOOD North community members were “surprised and disappointed” the Victorian Planning Minister approved Chunxing’s application to build a used lead acid battery recycling plant ahead of an impending VCAT hearing.

More than 50 people turned up to protest the decision outside of the Hazelwood North Primary School on Thursday morning, with some locals renewing their promises to leave the area.

Hazelwood North Action Group spokesman Andy Tegart said he had “no idea” the application was before the Planning Minister Richard Wynne, when it was approved in the new year.

“We respectfully disagree with the Minister, but we were surprised and disappointed by these choices,” Mr Tegart said.

“To have the Minister intervene while this matter is being contested by VCAT seems very strange, given there was opportunity for both sides to have this matter contested.”

It comes as the Minister intervened to approve the application which met the criteria for the state government’s Development Facilitation Program to green light shovel-ready projects.

However, the matter was waiting to be heard at the Victorian Civil Appeals Tribunal in April after it was refused by Latrobe City Council at a special council meeting in September.

It means that the project can go ahead without going to VCAT. “All along the government asked the community to have trust in the processes, but at the 11th hour these processes were totally over-ridden, including a VCAT hearing at foot,” Mr Tegart said.

The community protested the application with fears the battery recycling plant could expose the local environment to potential lead emissions.

Local business owner Rebecca Whelan said her family was considering pulling her three children out of Hazelwood North Primary School and leaving the area.

“Due to the lead smelter we will probably pick and move because I don’t feel that the health of my children is worth staying here,” Ms Whelan said.

“I’m confused as to why the government would go ahead with this when it’s so close to a primary school and so many kids. The Valley doesn’t need this.”

Angus and Sally Fraser had iced plans to build their dream home on a Mulga Road block while

waiting to see if the battery plant would go ahead.

The family was planning to send their tot to the local primary school, but was concerned about the prevailing winds from the plant.

“We now face a facility that could pose more health complications into the future, we are concerned about the outcome of this facility,” Ms Fraser said.

“It does have me concerned. We might be faced with an option of, instead of building that dream home, but now we may build something that’s a bit less of a dream and then look elsewhere.”

Voices of the Valley convenor Wendy Farmer had applied to represent the community at VCAT, but said she was upset the Minister did not make any local consultations before making his decision.

“This is not a shovel-ready project. The community do not want this.There will be a continued fight to ensure this project doesn’t happen,” Ms Farmer said.

“The government thinks this is the end of the matter, they are fooled. This is not the end of the matter, this is the beginning of the matter again.”

Proponents welcome new industry

LATROBE Valley business groups are circling to attract more recycling industries to the Latrobe Valley upon news the Hazelwood North battery plant has been approved.

Latrobe City councillor Dale Harriman said he had been contacted by industry groups stating that a range of plastics and metal recyclers were now keen to invest about $500 million in the Valley.

“There are a lot of closed-cycle economy industries looking to come here because we have an engineering and manufacturing background, there is a push to re-attract these industries here,” Cr Harriman said.

“Obviously, there was a large group in the community against the battery plant but also a large range of groups supporting it as it’s being seen as a positive investment in the area.”

Traralgon business advocate and safety advisor Claudio Marino has come out swinging in support of Chunxing, saying the project “ticked the boxes”.

“If this industry doesn’t come then the Valley will have nothing, no one will invest in us, it needs to be sensibly looked at.

“We will never have an SEC again that provides thousands of jobs, the Planning Minister recognised this was a depressed area and this is why he gave it the tick of approval.”

The battery plant was also supported by Latrobe Sustainability Group president Lorraine Bull, who made a submission in favour of the planning application to Latrobe City Council.

Ms Bull said she thought approving the plant was a “vote of common sense” as it would open up opportunities for more recycling industries, with jobs and training avenues.

“Australia needs to look after its own waste, and this means less mining and distrurbances to get the resources to produce the type of batteries that the vast majority of people have in their cars,” Ms Bull said.

“I understand the community’s concerns, but I feel these concerns are unfounded. The EPA approved it and the emissions will be well below EPA levels.”

A letter to the local community

Dr Jayaweera plans to make more comment once the decision is formally gazetted, which is expected this week.

LATROBE City Council is waiting to see a list of conditions attached to the ministerial approval of the Chunxing battery plant.

Meanwhile, some Latrobe City councillors have contacted Chunxing privately to ask the company to voluntarily adopt a list of extra conditions in the planning permit.

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said she was “shocked and saddened”

the Minister overrode council’s decision to knock back the battery plant without any consultation.

“We had no idea he was considering it until we got word he approved it last week. We made the decision not to support it after a great deal of community consultation,” Cr Gibson said.

“We’ve been trying to find out what the conditions are, but we’ve got nothing, I don’t know if any of the stronger conditions have been adopted by the state government.”

Latrobe City planning officers originally recommended Chunxing’s application to build the plant on Fourth Road, before councillors voted it down at a five-hour special meeting in September.

Cr Graeme Middlemiss put forward an alternative motion with a list of extra conditions attached to the application, including a community reference group, real time air monitoring and independent soil testing.

However, councillors rejected the

application after deciding it did not meet the planning scheme, would provide negative amenity impacts and overwhelming community opposition to the project.

Cr Dale Harriman said it was important for Latrobe City to work with Chunxing now that it had been given the green light to go ahead.

He asked other councillors to email the company last week asking it to adopt these extra conditions as an act of “good faith” with the community, despite it

being under no legal obligation to do so.

“We need to work with them in a conciliatory manner not an antagonistic manner. Latrobe needs to accept the minister’s decision as it’s final,” Cr Harriman said.

“We need to reach out an olive branch and work with Chunxing, as they will be ratepayers with our council now.

We need them to accept these extra conditions as an act of goodwill for the community.”

“Rather than conveying the decision to council and for the sake of transparency, the Minister must now provide a statement to our local community as to why he called in and approved this project without community consultation and without the opportunity for it to be contested at VCAT.” Last week, Mr Wynne approved an

The project also gained an Environment Protection Authority works approval and is planned to be built in a heavy industry precinct.

A state government spokeswoman said the state-of-the art facility will create jobs, provide $50 million in stimulus to the local economy and divert 50,000 tonnes of car batteries from landfill each year.

The Council have control over the Latrobe Planning Scheme which governs land use planning and provides decision guidelines for planning applications such as this. The planning scheme gives businesses and investors surety as to what can and cannot occur on a site and encourages investment. If Council, or by extension the community) did not want a specific use in a specific area then they should have amended the scheme or the zoning of the land. Council were wrong to refuse the application as it was compliant with the scheme. The state government have done the right thing here. This was a waste of everyone’s time and money.

Traralgon business hung out to dry

THE owners of Traralgon Dry Cleaners received an unexpected and disheartening letter days before Christmas.

The letter, from Fire Rescue Victoria received on December 21, informed owners Nathan and Sharlene Theissling that their dry cleaning services for fire stations in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon would no longer be required. “From January 1, 2021 all personal protective clothing (PPC) used in FRV’s firefighting operations that contains fire rated materials will be laundered through a certified provider,� the letter read.

The FRV’s certified provider is located in Melbourne.

Traralgon Dry Cleaners has been laundering station uniforms for Traralgon fire station for four years, and in September took on the same services at Moe and Morwell.

Nathan Theissling said the local laundry service was not warned their contract would be terminated and was shocked when it received the letter. “We called FRV when we received the letter because we thought it was a mistake, we have never cleaned PPE for the stations,� he said. “We were told we can’t touch any laundry for the stations. “FRV are just continuing to look after Melbourne ... their letter to us did not pass the sniff test. “We are qualified, we had to do schooling and are very regulated in the work that we do.�

It just defies logic. “It is incumbent on the government to intervene.�

An FRV spokesperson said “from January 1, 2021 all personal protective clothing (PPC) used in FRV’s firefighting operations that contains fire rated materials will be laundered through a certified provider�. “This ensures the protective capabilities of the garments are properly maintained, and that all contaminants FRV firefighters may be exposed to during emergency response are removed safely,� the spokesperson said. “A centralised and certified service will ensure consistency, and provide the highest level of safety for the community who handle PPC, and our firefighters who rely on these garments to keep them safe.�

First COVID-19 vaccines to be rolled out next month in Australia

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison has flagged mid-February as a date for the roll-out of the first coronavirus vaccines in Australia.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, Mr Morrison said the federal government would aim to have four million Australians vaccinated by the end of March.

The first round of vaccinations will be reserved for priority groups including frontline health workers, those in hotel quarantine, and aged care and disability workers and residents.

Mr Morrison said the vaccine approval process for COVID-19 was “moving considerably faster than normal vaccination processes”.

But the mid-February delivery target is dependent on approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration and delivery from suppliers.

It’s expected the Pfizer vaccine will be the first to gain the TGA stamp of approval, likely by the end of January.

“The vaccine is only release post-approval,” Mr Morrison said.

Health authorities have outlined a five-tier list for vaccination priority, with children the last to be immunised.

The five tiers are: ■ Phase 1a - up to 1.4m doses: Quarantine and border workers, frontline healthcare workers, aged care and disability care staff and residents.

■ Phase 1b - up to 14.8m doses: Adults aged over 70, other healthcare workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged over 55, younger adults with underlying medical conditions, including a disability, high-risk workers including police, fire, defence, emergency services and meat processing.

■ Phase 2a - up to 15.8m doses: Adults aged over 50, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged over 18, other critical and high-risk workers.

■ Phase 2b - up to 16m doses: Rest of adult population and any unvaccinated Australians from previous phases.

■ Phase 3 - up to 16m doses: Children aged under 18, if recommended.

Rehab centre build to get underway

Plans for a 20-bed facility were initially announced as part of a 2018 election promise, and a plot of land on the Princes Highway near Latrobe Regional Hospital was secured in March of 2019.

But a lack of progress, paired with a 33 per cent increase in drug-related crime across Gippsland, prompted the state opposition to call for construction of the Traralgon facility as a matter of urgency last month.

Plans released today confirm construction will begin “in early 2021” and the centre fully operational by the end of the year.

Another two youth rehab facilities will open Corio and Wangaratta, with all three to be built

by Melbourne-based Modscape.

They will cater for people aged between 16 and 21 and address underlying issues leading to alcohol and other drug use, in a structured residential setting.

Young people will also engage in a live-in program that includes around-the-clock clinical care, social and life skills development activities, relapse prevention education, individual counselling and group work.

The youth-specific facility will also support young people to reintegrate back into the community and access educational and vocational training and employment skills.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the new facilities would “save lives and help people get back on track close to home” “These plans have been ... finalised following extensive consultation with the community and service providers, ensuring members of our community on their recovery journey receive better treatment,” she said.

It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology released the national annual climate statement, which revealed maximum and minimum temperatures were above average for all states and the Northern Territory.

Rainfall for 2020 was close to average overall, easing drought conditions in many areas, while some regions received below average rainfall.

In Victoria, total rainfall overall was close to average but above average in others, mostly in central and southern parts of the state.

Victoria also had its third-wettest April on record, but most other months during the year were drier than average.

The state’s mean temperature was close to average in most months, but November was the state’s second-warmest on record, while May bucked the trend and was the coolest on record since 2996.

In the Murray-Darling Basin, southern water storages saw significant increases during 2020 - rising from 36.8 per cent in March 2020 to 68.8 per cent at the end of November.

In the northern Basin water storage levels also increased from a record low of 5.4 per cent to around 25 per cent at the end of December.

“The mean temperature for the 10 years from 2011 to 2020 was the highest on record, at 0.94 degrees above average, and 0.33 degreeswarmer than the previous 10 years,” Senior Climatologist Dr Lynette Bettio said “Rainfall for Australia was close to average for the nation as a whole at 483.4 mm: 4 per cent above the 1961-1990 average of 466.0 mm.”

All of the capital cities, except Adelaide, observed warmer than average annual mean minimum temperatures. Nights were especially warm in Sydney, Darwin, Hobart, Canberra, and Brisbane.

“Globally, every year from 2013 onwards has been among the ten warmest on record,” Dr Bettio said.

“2016 and 2019 (were) the hottest and 2020 was among the top three, despite the onset of La Nina which has a suppressing effect on global temperatures.”

Australia also had its warmest spring on record in 2020.

Harriers’ cheer THE Traralgon Harriers recently held their annual Christmas breakup and social event, celebrating a difficult year with a novelty run and presentations at their upgraded clubrooms.

The novelty run included a few extra challenges along the way such as walking a tightrope, a sack race, a boot camp, puzzles and skill tests, as well as passing through the drink station, with fun and teamwork being the focus.

“Considering the year we’ve had, the social connections and the fun were the prime concerns for the evening, with the 1.5km looped run being a secondary aspect to the night,” Harriers president Phill Mayer said.

“We had 10 teams of seven members, plus the leaders of the novelty events and helpers, with over 80 members in attendance, adhering to COVID regulations of course, but the atmosphere and social features of the evening were the main ingredients.”

Despite COVID-19, the Harriers membership base has continued to grow.

“We’ve had an influx of some really solid runners of course, but the main cohort has been recreational and social runners, wanting to have the support of a club to help motivate them,” Mayer said.

“There is nothing like group running to inspire and push you along to reach your own goals.

The club also held its presentations for season championships.

“Due to COVID, we had three seasons of championships to catch up on,” Mayer said.

“It was a real celebration of achievements and the club getting back together despite the tough year.

“We also presented medals to the 2020 Marathon winners and the 5km Track Champions.

“It was a great night with catering and a DJ, and members really enjoyed being back together.”

The club will kick off the new year on Thursday, January 14 and resume normal Thursday runs starting from 6pm.

“We’ll once again welcome new runners to join the club,” Mayer said.

“Everyone will be ready to run off the Christmas pudding and get moving again, or maybe new members will want to start their fitness journey and fulfil some New Year’s resolutions. “Whatever the case, the club welcome runners of all abilities.

“The club has a COVID policy in place, adhering to social distancing, and providing everything goes right and the planets align, we’re aiming to run the Community Fun Run on March 14 and the Traralgon Marathon in June.”

AN unlikely relationship between a Scottish school and Hazelwood North Volunteer Fire Brigade has resulted in the station’s purchase of a new defibrillator.

Edinburgh Academy Junior School held a ‘come to school as your hero’ day to raise money for the station after hearing about the horrific Australian bushfires early last year.

The day was set up by Traralgon-born Marika Komori, who created prints to be sold on the day and dressed up as her personal hero - a CFA firefighter.

The students also came to school dressed as firefighters, nurses and doctors.

Hazelwood North CFA volunteer Maria Harkins said the fundraising efforts “impacted firefighters greatly” at the station.

“When they heard about the bushfires in East Gippsland (the students) wanted to help.The school raised more than $2000 and wanted to donate that to us,” she said.

“We told them that East Gippsland really needed the money at that time so they donated most of

the funds to GERF and sent us some money for equipment.

“We recently received the money and put it towards the purchase of a new defibrillator for Hazelwood North Volunteer Fire Brigade.

“We sent the school a photo of some firefighters with the defibrillator, a certificate of appreciation and some facts and figures about the fires for them.”

Hazelwood North Volunteer Fire Brigade and Edinburgh Academy Junior School have been in contact since, sharing photos and information.

Ms Harkins said the station wanted to show their appreciation to the school because “without their donation we could not have done it”.

“It’s a funny thing the hero tag ... people who get things done are the real heroes and in this instance the children are the heroes,” she said.

“To have our name on the wall of a school on the other side of the world and students dressed up as firefighters was just amazing ... we are just a small station here.

“What those children were able to do was amazing.”

Care for your pets in the heat AS the weather heats up across the state, the RSPCA is reminding pet owners to ensure their animals are included in their holiday plans this summer.

RSPCA received 1401 reports of abandoned animals last financial year, with 468 of these reports during last summer alone.

The reminder comes as part of a new state-wide campaign targeting three of the most commonly reported cruelty concerns during the hotter months; abandonment, dogs in hot cars, and insufficient access to water and shade.

Reports relating to abandoned animals routinely spike in January, with many reports coming from concerned neighbours.

As such, RSPCA Victoria is encouraging pet owners to advise their neighbours of plans they put in place for care of any animals remaining at home.

The fact none of them could go on was a testament to the disciplined line and length of the Latrobe attack.

Spearhead Jack Gay has found his rhythm as a Shark, claiming 5/21 during an impressive 16-over spell.

He was ably supported by Chris Johnson, who bowled eight maidens in 13 overs for figures of 1/13,Tyron Gamage (2/17 from 12 overs) and Hiran Rajapakse (2/17 from 13 overs).

Latrobe lost Brett Duncan early doors in their chase, but Anthony Bloomfield and Ronnie Chokununga settled proceedings.

Bloomfield was unbeaten on 46 and Chokununga 34 not out at stumps, with Latrobe only needing two runs to claim first innings points next Saturday.

A BRILLIANT century from skipper Brendan Mason has Churchill in the box seat after day one of their clash with Trafalgar.

Mason produced a four-hour batting masterclass to score 147 as the Cobras posted a formidable score of 260 at George Cain Oval.

The stylish right-hander hit 12 fours and four towering sixes in what was his new highest score in the top-flight, surpassing the unbeaten 124 he scored against Morwell earlier in the season.

Adding great value to the 215-ball knock was the fact it came when Churchill were on the back foot at 3/41 following the departure of Paul Metlikovec for a duck.

Metlikovec was the second victim of Riley White, who earlier claimed the wicket of opener Matt Harvey (7).

Mason needed an ally and found one in Steve Warr to halt Trafalgar’s momentum.

The pair put on 162 for the fourth wicket.

Warr was resolute in defence as Mason punished anything from the Ships’ bowlers which strayed in length.

Churchill passed the 200, but shortly after the captain’s fine hand came to an end when Ryan Bishop had him caught by Daniel Heathcote.

John Keighran continued the momentum in his return to action with an explosive 28 from 17 deliveries, as he and Warr put on 40.

But disaster would strike for Churchill on 243 as Bishop produced a spell that put Trafalgar back in the contest.

In 20 minutes, the Cobras lost 4/0 with Bishop collecting three wickets and White one as Churchill’s hopes of posting 300 evaporated.

Warr was the first to go for a valuable 41, having batted for a little more than three and a half hours, facing 153 deliveries.

Then came Keighran’s departure and he was shortly followed by Harry Van Rossum, bowled by White for a duck.

Bernie McLeod became Bishop’s fourth victim when he too was bowled for a duck to leave Churchill 8/243.

Sharks right on top

LATROBE has all but wrapped up first innings points against league leaders Raiders at Yinnar.

Morwell Tigers-Yinnar went into the contest without key trio Brad Knowles, Tim Darby and Jason MacFarlane and the Sharks took full advantage.

Raiders could only muster a moderate score of 92 from 64 overs of batting. Five batsmen reached double-figures, but none surpassed 20.

In just his fifth top-flight appearance, teenage talent Ben Burrows top-scored with 18.

Fellow next generation talents Tim Hutchinson (17) and Harry McColl (13) put on 27 for the ninth

MIRBOO North will go into day two needing 130 runs to defeat Morwell.

Morwell was bowled out for 162 in 59.1 overs at Mirboo North Recreation Reserve.

Mark Cukier top-scored with 37, while openers Robert Semmler (32) and Sam Mooney (31) also got off to good starts.

But Morwell, who were at one stage 3/104, paid the price for nobody going on to make a big score as Mirboo North forced their way back into the contest.

Dale Banks (3/25) and Damien Turner (3/33) turned the momentum in the home side’s favour as Morwell lost 7/58.

Will Cheatley (2/30) and Josh Taylor (2/30) also played their part as the league’s leading wickettaker Madura Perera went wicketless for only the second time this season.

Morwell has the recipe to blunt the Sri Lankan ace, having kept him out successfully in the previous game between the two clubs earlier in the season.

Mirboo North openers Callum Polo and Turner followed up the good work by the bowlers.

The pair survived the 25 overs bowled, reaching 0/33 at stumps, with Polo on 11 and Turner on 19, despite some tight bowling from Brendan Brincat and Travis Pickering.

Pelicans power into the top four CRICKET TDCA

THE final round of One Day Cricket saw the ladder change considerably as the race for finals spots took some interesting twists on a big Saturday.

Yarram & District have jumped from sixth to fourth after recording a convincing win over Toongabbie at Roger Ries Oval.

Toongabbie won the toss and decided to bat on their home deck which certainly was no surprise but when Michael Dunn was removed for a duck Toongabbie needed to build a partnership to make sure they would be set up to bat their full allotment of overs.

Captain Rob Wheildon promoted himself to number 3 and with Zak Russell were able to put on 46 for the second wicket before Russell was adjudged lbw for 27.

Wheildon held up an end for the Rams, but some quick wickets were lost until Tom Shippen then came to the crease and help out his skipper.

Unfortunately Wheildon was then removed for 40, but with the tail wagging Shippen was able to make a nice 43 not out as the Rams were able to take the score up to 8/164 which was more than competitive.

Young Pelicans & District paceman Jack Collins again was best for the Pelicans claiming 4/47 while the other wickets were shared around.

Yarram then made the most of the fielding restrictions early as Brett Pedlow (27 from 39), Dylan Rash (33 from 22) and Ant Scott (35 from 25) got off to an absolute flyer which then set up Jarryd Swift and Daniel O’Keefe to guide the Pelicans home, earning themselves a bonus point in the process.

Scott’s 35 included four fours and two towering sixes which is a feat in itself on the huge Roger Ries Oval while Shippen was the best for the Rams claiming 2/32.

Cricket back at Catterick Crescent

CRICKET returned to Catterick Crescent for the first time in 686 days as Imperials proudly hosted Glengarry at what is truly a brilliant new sporting complex in the West End of Traralgon.

Glengarry won the toss and would have been nervous about facing the pace of Joel Randall on a brand new wicket but Al Jenkin took the honours of scoring the first runs on the new deck with a towering six to open his account.

The new ball was coming onto the bat nicely as the openers put on 74 before Jenkin was dismissed on 49

Glengarry’s top order all got starts but Imperials kept chipping away and eventually got to a point where they snared a few quick wickets of Glengarry’s lower order which stopped the Magpies from having a late flurry and taking their score up to a big 250 but still 212 was a very good score.

batsman followed by Nat Freitag who got 41 then Hamish Busk with a handy 34.

Joel Randall charged in hard for Imperials and claimed 3/47 in the process while Connor Hughes and Brad Sizeland both took two wicket each.

Chasing over 200 is never easy so skipper Brett Chapman threw caution to the wind and elevated Nat Campbell to the opening position and it looked like a masterstroke as the hard hitting bat whacked 37 in quick time, including two big sixes.

At 1/69, Chapman then came to the crease and kept going with the aggressive mindset as he smashed three sixes himself on his way to 45 while Ryan Morley made a good 27.

Imperials lack of depth was on display though as the middle order struggled after a good foundation was set by the top order but still Imps fought hard until finally being bowled out for 167 in the 45th over.

Al Jenkin capped off a good all round game claiming three wickets which would surely earn him man of the match honours as Frank Marks and Nat Freitag both claimed two wickets each.

Tigers shake off dogged Rovers

GORMANDALE headed to Duncan Cameron Park to take on Rovers knowing that a win would guarantee them a spot in the One Day Final to be played on January 24.

After winning the toss, in form opener Paul Roberts was out in the first over which then meant Matt Hibbs joined other opener Chris Lehner and built a solid foundation before Lehner departed for 26 with the score on 62.

The Duncan Cameron wicket wasn’t like a regular Duncan Cameron wicket though as Matt Hibbs scratched around and rode his luck early while wickets fell around him.

out massively though with James Jacobsen and Shaun Barbour lifting the run rate before Adam Brady (15 not out) helped guide the score to a very good 7/198.

Hibbs held the innings together brilliantly, finishing 87 not out after batting 49.3 overs.

Simon Duff for Rovers was very good as he claimed 3/18 while Justin Little took 2/35.

Rovers bowlers didn’t help themselves out too much as the extras column read 39 at the close of innings with 25 of those being wides.

Take even half of that off Gormandale’s total and it’s a completely different ball game.

Rovers didn’t start the best in their run chase losing Justin and Conner Little to the bowling of Shaun Barbour in the first couple of overs.

Dougal Williams then followed suit, also dismissed by Barbour and the Tigers certainly had their tail up.

Mitch Floyd then joined Ewan Williams in the middle and they were able to counter Gormandale’s attack and put on a very good partnership 48, but with the wicket playing a few tricks and being hard to score on eventually Williams was dismissed for a well made 36 which then opened the flood gates as Rovers lost regular wicket after that.

Mitch Floyd and Tyron Bramwell did their best as they both got starts and Jack Lynch was left stranded on 12 not out, but it was just too much work for Rovers to chase down against quality opposition, all out for 128.

Shaun Barbour is in some serious form as he claimed 3/5 from his seven overs to now lead the league for wickets and bowling average,Yohan Soyza took a nice little 2/25 with the other wickets shared between the rest.

Gormandale now slide into second spot before their bye next week.

They won’’t miss too much cricket though as they will need to prepare for the One Day Final against Ex Students on January 24.

CRICKET LVDCL A GRADE

CATS wrapped up first innings points after an action-packed opening day of play against Centrals at John Black Oval.

Centrals skipper Robert Webber elected to bat when he won the toss, a decision which appeared the right one as he and Rob Wilkie put on an opening stand of 49.

Wilkie was the first batsman to fall, bowled by Callum Stewart, having scored 13.

Sam Gray and Webber then moved the score to 67 before disaster struck for the Lions, who lost 4/1 in seemingly the blink of an eye.

Stewart trapped Gray (5) lbw and Tyler Brown claimed the prized wicket of Tye Hourigan for a second ball duck.

The carnage continued when Stewart dismissed Webber for a well-made 45 in the next over.

Webber had looked in good touch, hitting five fours and two sixes during his 80-ball stay.

Ben Doble went two balls later as Centrals slumped from 1/67 to 5/68.

From there, the Lions attempted something of a recovery job.

Four batsmen reached double-figures in Ethan Foley (10),Tom Webster (12), Lachlan Patterson (15) and Bryce Williamson (17 not out), but it was not enough to stop Centrals from being bowled out in the 51st over for 128.

Stewart thrives with the longer spells on offer in two-day cricket and returned the brilliant figures of 5/30 from his 19.2 overs.

Captain Ben Julin conjured 2/23 and Tinashe Panyangara enjoyed success in his second spell to finish with 2/36.

CATS lost in-form opener Jamie Cochrane for a duck, but recovered from that setback to seal the first innings points in quite comfortable fashion.

Josh Keyhoe and Julin put on 133 for the second wicket before Keyhoe was undone by Foley for 61.

Hourigan then engineered a late fightback for the Lions with a spell of 3/19 from five overs.

He bowled Julin for a well-made 69, which included 14 boundaries, then dismissed Brown and Harry Cooper in quick succession.

CATS finished the day at 5/154, a lead of 26 runs, with Panyangara and Josh Moore each two not out.

Panthers in the box seat JEERALANG-BOOLARRA needs 44 runs for victory on day two with seven wickets in hand against Traralgon West.

Electing to bat first on home soil, the decision backfired on the Eagles, who were 3/5 in the blink of an eye with Nilantha Thillekarathna, Josh Monacella and Tim Fitch all back in the pavillion.

Ihraam Zafar attempted to get the innings back on track, although his departure for 26 proved a hammer blow for Traralgon West.

Ben Edebohls added some respectability to the innings with an unbeaten 24, but the Eagles were bowled out in 61 overs for just 93.

Jacob Carnes was the pick of the JeeralangBoolarra bowlers, finishing with 3/15 from his 11 overs.

The emerging talent has now taken 12 wickets at 25 in the top-flight this season.

Ben McCormack (2/11), Ossy Brennan (2/15 from 15 overs) and Matt McGrath (2/20 from 18 overs) all bowled well for the Panthers.

Jeeralang-Boolarra’s reply got off to a poor start when Lachlan Smith fell to Salman Rasool for one.

But McCormack and Leon Risdon steadied the ship until McCormack was dismissed by Adam Thow for 13.

The Panthers finished three down after skipper Ben Heath was bowled by Eagles spinner Luke Sumner for three.

Risdon finished unbeaten on 30 and will lead Jeeralang-Boolarra’s push for first innings points next week.

Rasool (1/10 from seven overs) was the leading light of the Traralgon West attack, with both Sumner (1/7) and Thow (1/13) also posing a serious threat.

THE 2021 EnergyAustralia Classic Singles was won by 2020 runner-up Thor Shannon from Brighton, who defeated Australian representative Aaron Wilson in Thursday’s decider 25-19.

Wilson started well in the final, going to an early 5-0 lead before Shannon with three shots on the fifth end trailed 4-5.

Both bowlers were drawing well as Wilson consolidated with an 8-4 lead, but not to be denied, Shannon drew level at 9-9.

Wilson then drew two shots on the next end before Shannon draw three shots in reply to lead 12-11.

Shannon began to show his supremacy as he gradually won ends with Wilson battling to stay close.

With the score 18-19, Wilson was now only one shot behind.

Shannon led 24-18 with Wilson needing to win every end to stay in the match and Shannon needing that elusive last shot that often takes a number of ends to attain.

Wilson survived to go 19-24, however Shannon gained the next end to gain the much-needed shot to the applause of an appreciative crowd.

Spectators were treated to a spectacular of draw shot bowling from two very accomplished players on an excellent free-running green, prepared by new Newborough greenkeeper Scott Jones.

In the morning semi-finals,Wilson played Nathan Murray (Bundoora RSL), who got away to a good start leading 6-2.

After 10 ends the game was tight with Wilson leading 9-8 and won the next five ends to lead 17-8.

25-19. In the other semi-final, South Australian champion Craig Mills trailed 2-3 before winning five ends straight to lead Shannon 8-3.

Both players were drawing well, however Mills appeared to have the edge as he gained a 15-8 lead.

Shannon got on a roll and drew level at 19-19 before Mills nudged ahead 21-19 before Shannon won the next four ends to win 25-21.

Shannon said he was anxious in the lead-up, but was delighted to again reach the final.

“I am still trying to pinch myself and thinking did that just happen? I am just stoked,” he said.

“To play another final in this competition was huge and to play someone like Aaron was just fantastic.

“The conditions were a bit tricky with the wind, but its not about how well you play as much as it is how well you handle the conditions at the time and I felt that maybe the green gods were on my side.”

Shannon said the EnergyAustralia Classic Singles was his favourite event.

“This competition is fantastic, it’s by far the best, it’s something that you want to be part of and if you’re not you are just gutted that you aren’t there,” he said.

“With all the rains we have had most greens are pretty slow, but these were just outstanding, so full credit to the greenkeeper.

“I want to thank Aaron he is a great clubmate, it was great to have the opportunity to play against someone like that.”

Wilson said the game “was always going to be a tight one”.

“The final was obviously tricky with the wind, but it was a solid game,” he said.

“This is one of my favourite competitions, at the start of the year it sort of starts things off and it was good to stretch the legs and get out there again.

“I have been staying locally for the last couple of days and enjoying the hospitality of Moe and Newborough, which has been nice.”

ROUND OF EIGHT

THE round of eight late on Wednesday afternoon is often played by tiring bowlers after a day of bowls in the heat.

The mild conditions allowed spectators to view four exciting matches.

Inaugural winner Neville Brown, a regular player at the Classic Singles, did battle with Mills.

After leading Mills 8-6, Brown gradually fell behind and relinquished a 17-14 lead with Mills taking the last three ends to win 25-14.

Shannon played Brendan McCallum (Hampton) and started well leading 7-0 after three ends.

McCallum fought back to lead 12-10 before Shannon won four ends in a row to lead 15-12, McCallum shared ends to trail 17-19 before Shannon went on to a 25-17 victory.

Murray and defending champion Nathan Bush played a cracking match with Bush jumping to an early 6-1 lead.

Murray fought back to 11-11, they went end for end until tied 22-22 Bush got two and led 24-22 before Murray drew three shots for a 25-24 win.

The match of the round though was between Wilson and Bob Watt (Whittlesea).

This was the longest match of the tournament with Watt well positioned for a major upset after leading 14-10 before Wilson drew level at 15-15.

They were level again at 18-18 and again at 20-20 and 22-22 before Wilson managed to win 25-23.

Mention must be made of the last match played on Tuesday.

Players had played in inclement conditions throughout the day and the rain intensified as Glen Birt (Wonthaggi) and Giora Pomerantz (Caulfield Park-Alma) played a thrilling match.

Despite the rain, the green was drawing extremely well and the match got very tense as if Pomerantz won it was possible that the marker Brett Harle would win the section. With the score 24-24, Birt drew shot and won the section.

In action: Thor Shannon came back from a 5-0 start against Aaron WIlson to win the decider.

AN invitation by the Latrobe Valley and District Cricket League to formally discuss the “establishment of a single, united cricket competition across the greater Latrobe Valley catchment” with the Traralgon and District Cricket Association was recently declined by the TDCA. The invitation from the LVDCL continued overtures to convince the seven TDCA clubs to combine into one competition, after a mergerof-sorts with the old Central Gippsland Cricket Association in 2018 saw five TDCA clubs join the new league.

The TDCA board and member clubs held two meetings in December, with clubs presenting their firm position on the matter at the second meeting.

At that meeting, it was agreed by all TDCA member clubs to decline the invitation.

In response to the LVDCL invitation, the TDCA cited concerns surrounding the promotion-relegation structure of the LVDCL and the playing of matches at neutral venues.

The TDCA also raised concerns about increased travel for juniors and the possibility a combined league would divide clubs perceived to be stronger or weaker.

In a letter distributed to LVDCL board members and clubs, the TDCA signalled a number of intentions - including the creation and finalisation of a strategic plan to expand the association to eight clubs by 2023.

“We are excited by this challenge and know that we present a great opportunity for nonparticipating clubs to join the TDCA in coming years,” the letter reads.

“The TDCA member clubs wish to stay fully united and not enter into any such discussion (with the LVDCL) within the next five years.”

The letter, signed off by all TDCA clubs and the umpires association, acknowledged the growth of the association from its current seven clubs to eight would be challenging, but said it was something it was willing to take on.

With the TDCA looking to expand, a number of Gippsland clubs currently affiliated elsewhere will no doubt be identified as prospective partners.

Sale-Maffra club Rosedale-Kilmany appears a logical choice based on location, and would have all TDCA clubs except Yarram covered within a 20-minute drive.

The Warriors do however have strong historical ties with the SMCA, dating back further to when the two clubs amalgamated in 1977.

For the next five years at least, it appears the only time the LVDCL and TDCA will meet will be in Gippsland Cricket League clashes.

With this in mind, the upcoming GCL semi-final between the two associations on January 17 is sure to carry even more spice.

IN BRIEF HORSE RACING: Moe trainer Peter Gelagotis celebrated success at Cranbourne on Friday night after Miss Five Hundred made light work of her rivals.

The five-year-old daughter of Dundeel scored a dominant four and three-quarter length success in the Tricodes March 12 Benchmark 64 Handicap (3000m).

Ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil, Miss Five Hundred sat handier in the run after some luckless runs earlier this preparation.

Miss Five Hundred, backed in from $3.30 into $2.30 on the Victorian Official Price, swept around her rivals coming into the home straight and raced away to score in a time of 3:12.68.

Field Of Lights finished second, while fellow Moe galloper Heartland Raider finished a good third.

Heartland Raider, prepared by Charlie Gafa, franked the form of her good third at Caulfield on January 2, with another consistent showing.
