MEMBER for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath is calling on the state government to clarify the difference between active and recovered COVID-19 cases as part its daily reporting in Victoria.

Ms Bath said she wanted to see more clarification about the data across Victoria’s local government areas.

There has been seven cases of COVID-19 recorded in Latrobe City.

The Department of Health and Human Services website provided statewide data on total cases, hospitalisations, deaths, testing and the number of recovered cases.

However, the department is not providing data on recovery rates in local government areas. “Many people have asked me about how many active cases there are in the Latrobe Valley,�

Ms Bath said. “Out of these seven cases, there would be a proportion of recovered cases, and this is a good news story about those who have recovered.�

MELINA BATH Ms Bath said there should be better reporting around cumulative case numbers and recovered cases.

She said this would provide a more comprehensive understanding and provide a more accurate picture of COVID-19 in Gippslanders’ “own backyards�. “The community needs to see positives in the fight against

COVID-19 regionally, and not just receive the big picture,� she said. “They want to better understand the path to recovery, see the light at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic tunnel and be reassured their actions are making a difference during these uncertain times,� she said. “Importantly it would provide our communities with a greater sense of worth that sacrifices made, the self-isolation and social distancing practices have been and continue to be worthwhile.�

A government spokeswoman said the government was focusing on saving lives from coronavirus. “And we have over 1000 disease detectives working around the clock for that purpose,� she told The Express. “Tracing teams are reporting on data that normally takes days and weeks to present. They are to be commended for their work as they provide the best, most accurate data as soon as it is available.�

New centre is taking shape

WORK is well underway on the $35.5 million redevelopment of TAFE Gippsland’s Morwell campus, with the delivery of a new purpose-built Health and Early Childhood Centre (HECTC).

The fit-for-purpose modular building was designed by architects GHDWoodhead and built

by Modscape.

It was shipped to the Morwell site on April 14 and April 16 in 16 pre-fabricated modules.

A six-week fitout will see the building completed by the end of May 2020.

The new HECTC building will accommodate all health studies staff and students, including nursing, allied health, individual support and early childhood education and care, along with specialised nursing and individual support labs, specialised early childhood learning spaces and general-purpose classrooms.

The first staff and students were expected to move into the building mid-year although the current COVID-19 pandemic will see teachers delivering mainly remote and on-line training with very little face to face course delivery for the foreseeable future. “The Victorian Government is investing in state-of-the-art facilities at our Morwell campus to

A NARRACAN man has pushed through the pain barrier to successfully complete a 100-mile marathon in 24 hours non-stop by running laps around his neighbour’s cow paddock.

Jason Rantall completed 162 kilometres on the weekend to raise more than $7000 for homeless charity Christmas on the Streets, where he volunteers with his family reaching out to vulnerable people.

Mr Rantall had originally aimed to take part in a 60km marathon in May, but COVID-19 meant the run was postponed, so he decided to take part in his own challenge at home.

He put up some lights and a caravan in the neighbour’s paddock and ended up running 320 laps around a 500-metre circuit on a mowed grass track watching out for potholes.

“It tested me mentally and physically as this was going on throughout the night and I was on my own isolated and running. There was no walking, I ran every step,” Mr Rantall told The Express.

“I envisioned myself finishing it, not once did I fail in my own head, if your mind finds a way to do it then your brain never says you can’t.”

Mr Rantall ate while he ran, allowing himself small portions following a ketogenic diet and only stopped to go to the toilet, or have the occasional one-minute massage at the tail end of the run.

He was even joined by his seven-year-old daughter Willow for 47 laps and was back-up by a small support crew of family and mates.

“The furthest I had run was 60 kilometres. After this run, I

The former self-described “raging alcoholic” and chain smoker took up drinking at 14 and put down the bottle only two years ago at 44 when he decided to start running and has shed 30 kilograms.

He was diagnosed with bipolar, psychosis and obsessive

compulsive disorder and at one point he had tried to end his own life, but said he found exercise to be an important tool to recovery.

Mr Rantall now runs mental health first aid training and convenes a support group in Trafalgar.

The distance runner hopes to run another hundred miles in 24 hours to raise awareness for farmer mental health.

Yinnar sisters continuing a family’s navy legacy

WO sisters are carrying on a Yinnar family’s Australian Defence Force tradition and have followed on from their father’s navy career to become high-ranking officers.

She said both her dad and sister - who had been in the Navy for about 20 years - helped to give her first-hand experience of what it would be like in the service.

Lieutenant Erika Peters and Commander Cindy Jenkins are second generation Navy recruits, taking after dad Gareth Peters, who was a maritime technician for 10 years.

Commander Jenkins has intercepted suspected drug traffickers and pirate ships in the middle east and taken part in counter terrorism as part of Operation Slipper on board the HMAS Melbourne.

Lieut Peters has only been in the service of four years and has already been Maritime Warfare Officer on Australia’s biggest ship RAN flagship HMAS Canberra.

She is now commanding officer at the RAN recruit school based at the HMAS Cerberus, overseeing new recruits in their 11 weeks of training to become sailors.

She is is now in the highly selective and prestigious role of flag lieutenant for the Commander of the Australian fleet.

“I suffer from sea sickness quite badly, this is funny as I joined the Navy, but I can manage it,” Lieut Peters said.

“I’ve had a short career and I’m still in my early stages, and I’m in a lucky situation to have experienced what I have.”

“It’s pretty full on. Sometimes I take a step back on the bridge go wow! Holey Moley! I’m in the middle of the ocean in charge on behalf of the captain of the biggest ship in the fleet,” she said.

She said driving a ship was a “massive team effort”, with a range of people on the lookout to make sure everything was on track.

Lieut Peters was “adamant” she would not join the Navy, but decided to sign up after spending a few days at sea on the HMAS

“At the end of the 11 weeks it’s amazing to see the transformation from when they arrive with long hair in civilian clothes, to at the end when they are marching in navy uniform. It’s very special,” she said.

Comm Jenkins said she originally signed-up to travel and get an education - and has achieved both of these goals in spades, with a map on her wall marked with all the countries she’s visited.

“When I grew up, my mum never gave me the impression that there was nothing I could never do. I’ve

never noticed being a female in a male-dominated environment, we have equal opportunities,” Comm Jenkins said.

Both sisters said the challenges in the Navy included being months away from family at sea and living in close quarters for long periods, but the rewards were plenty.

Both spruiked the merits of team work, self-discipline, meticulous training, preparation, leadership skills, making new mates and becoming a member of the Navy family.

“This is why Anzac Day is so important to us, it’s a reflection of this bigger family you are part of,” Comm Jenkins said.

Proud dad Mr Peters recommended the defence force as a pathway for young people, but acknowledged it was not a lifestyle for everyone.

“I’m very proud of my daughters, they’ve aspired a lot higher than I did as officers,” the Morwell RSL member and former Hazelwood Power Station sparky said.

Mr Peters would usually be at the Yinnar RSL sub-branch Anzac Day dawn service on Saturday, but will be standing at his front gate instead, just like his two daughters at their respective bases.

2020 has shocked us all and it started with bushfires raging across the country with thousands of people isolated on the beach in Mallacoota.

Defence personnel were deployed to assist residents and rescue stranded holiday makers of this tiny beachside town. As a nation we witnessed these skilled professionals do what they do best.

What they do best is to serve our great country in its time of need. Time and time again our Defence Force personnel come into assist through floods, fires, droughts and cyclones. They are trained, disciplined, dedicated and organised, and they manage calculated risk to make things happen.

Today, as a war of a different kind, a war on COVID-19, rages around the world, our Defence Force personnel are again there at the frontline. They

Dawn services have for many years continued to grow in numbers as many young families join in the tradition by paying their respects and ‘remembering them’ at cenotaphs across the region.

But this year will not be the case due to restrictions put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

RSL Victorian branch president Robert Webster is calling on people to light a candle or put on a porch light for the dawn service and stand in their driveways.

“We’re asking Australians to stand at 6am,” Mr Webster said.

“A candle out the front, a light out the front, stand to and remember.

“We can all do it, it’s not that hard.”

Gippsland FM (104.7 FM) will broadcast a dawn service from 6am, which includes The Ode, The Last Post and a minute silence.

VEN more than a century after it began, Anzac Day touches people of all ages.

go where we need them. Whether that is to work alongside medical staff, setting up and staffing an emergency hospital in Tasmania or assisting with the production of personal protective equipment in Shepparton.

They do this service without question, they do it in the Spirit of Service. Just as those we salute on ANZAC Day did when they left our shores to fight overseas.

This coming ANZAC Day is different to those of the past. We cannot attend our dawn services this year. We cannot stand and watch or join in the march, we can though remember them, we can give a silent thanks.

So, this ANZAC Day go out to your letterbox at dawn, go out to your driveway and stand as one.

Let us embrace the stillness and reflect.

Let us demonstrate our respect in honouring those who have served and continue to serve our country with this simple act of solidarity.

People who may be strangers standing as one. Just as they stood as strangers on foreign soil. It’s both a private and public statement of unity. The things that unite us are stronger than those that divide us.

We owe them this much at least.

Let us honour them.

That is exemplified by the children at the Kylie Early Learning Centre in Morwell.

Youngsters aged between one and 10 have been busy as part of a project leading up to April 25.

Education leader Natalie Gordon said the children had played a key role in making a giant sign that reads Lest we forget, as well as working on poppies which will adorn the fence outside the school on Holmes Rd. “We haven’t made a big thing about Anzac Day in the past, but we came up with the idea and the response has been great,” she told The Express.

“The kids have been loving the activities, not just the younger ones, but the kinder kids and also the few that aren’t at school due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Two uncles who served Australia with distinction

When Ron received significant shrapnel wounds to both his legs and groin he was taken to a stable and had the shrapnel dug out with a pen knife.

His convalescence was spent in the attic of a Partisan fighter named Guido.

Food must have been very scarce because during this time Ron ate cat.

Ron kept in touch with Guido after the war and sent him money to buy an artificial leg.

Ron and another Aussie were holed up in a safe house when they were told by locals that another group of five Australians were in a safe house nearby tragically they had been caught by the fascists who shot them all.

By night, Ron and his mate Frank unearthed the bodies and marked the spot with a stone marker.

The bodies were

ON McIntyre and Charlie Mills were both 20 when they enlisted in the 2/32nd Battalion of the 9th Division better known as “The Rats of Tobruk.”

Their first taste of action was the ‘Siege of Tobruk’ where the Australians were keen to prove themselves and uphold the Anzac spirit.

The Australian defence was heroic and Rommel ‘The Desert Rat’ was furious at his first taste of defeat.

My uncles along with the 9th were withdrawn from Tobruk in September 1941 and deployed with the British 8th Army.

It was a blow to the Rats when in June 1942 Rommel, finally succeeded and took Tobruk in just two days.

Blazing hot days, freezing nights, mates gone forever and Tobruk lost.

Both of my uncles were captured on July 17, 1942 in the first Battle of El Alamein.

Their ‘A’ Company was ordered to advance 1000 yards on the right flank but their calculations were well out and they advanced 3000 yards.

Dawn broke and a message was sent “have captured our objective, but have overshot the mark and considering pulling back”.

Unfortunately pulling back was not an option, wireless communication had broken down and a runner had been unsuccessful in getting through - they were isolated.

It was getting light fast when the huge grey shapes of German tanks appeared.

The German Commander said “right Aussies, you have 10 seconds to lay down your arms - for you the war is over”.

They were handed over to the Italians and after six months were shipped across

Finally the pair were transported in cattle wagons to Camp PG57 Gruppignano near Venice.

The Commander Colonel Calcaterra was a fanatical fascist.

He encouraged cruelty and the sign over his door read ‘The English are cursed, but more cursed are the Italians who treat them well’.

Calcaterra reign of terror ended in 1943 when he was killed by the Partisans.

In September 1943, Italy capitulated and Ron, Charlie and others escaped from the camp.

Unfortunately, Ron and Charlie became separated.

Ron and his group joined the Italian resistance or Partisans who were very active in fighting against the Germans and Charlie and his mate Nick decided to walk over the Alps to neutral Switzerland.

Ron and his group joined the “Cherokee Mission” whose prime objective was sabotage, destroy bridges and anything else that would cut German supply lines.

and equipment had been parachuted in at night.

This mission was vital but extremely dangerous.

The Nazis had offered a bounty of 1 million lira dead or alive for any member of the Cherokee Mission - the level of danger had dramatically increased.

Special: A brooch Ron sent home from Tobruk. unidentifiable but Ron and Frank knew their names.

When they got home they made a Statutory Declaration in order that the families could be informed that their POW’s were deceased. The bodies were exhumed and they now rest in the Milan War Cemetery.

Ron stayed fighting with the Partisans until March 1945 when he was picked up by the 5th US Army. The family were advised in May that he was a recovered POW safe in Allied hands when he was repatriated to England before arriving home in September.

Ron was a senior technician with the then PMG Telephone Exchange in Margaret Street, Morwell and lived with his wife and son Malcolm in McDonald Street until his sudden death at 49.

Those years had taken their toll.

While Ron had been busy with the Partisans, Charlie and Nick began their trek across the Alps to Switzerland and were in the hills north of Coggiola heading north west. They ditched their battle dress and replaced it with whatever they could find.

Nick crossed the Alps in the pair of ladies’ shoes kept on with a bandage wrapped around his foot.

Charlie had by now picked

Finally they began their climb toward the mountain pass knowing that they could be spotted and aware of the dangers of the deep crevasses and on October 2, 1943 they passed the Swiss border.

Charlie’s first letter home to the family was sent from Zurich before being transferred to Adelboden.

Charlie was also repatriated home through the UK and was discharged in July 1945.

And now Charlie’s story takes a special twist.

I was contacted by a POW researcher/author who was interested POW escapees.

It seems Nick who had walked over the Alps with Charlie had been trying for many years to find him.

Nick had died at the age of 93 and had always regretted that he had never been able to make contact with Charlie after the war.

I was blown away when the researcher asked if I would talk to Nick’s widow Enid - would I ever!!

I had an amazing conversation with a very sweet 91-year-old lady who was still as sharp as a tack and so excited that I could fill in some blanks.

Clearly they had never given up trying to find Charlie and she was overjoyed to hear from me.

She would have lots to tell Nick when it was eventually her turn.

Anzac Day is more important than ever

RIGHT now we are facing the most significant challenge and threat to our way of life since the Second World War. The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we live, and it will change how we observe one of our nation’s most sacred days this year Anzac Day. There will be no marches, no parades and no gunfire breakfasts or games of two-up at your local RSL, but Anzac Day has not been cancelled and we will continue to pause this year to honour our servicemen and women.

Australians are at their best when we come together to support one another and while we cannot physically gather to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our Defence personnel, we can show them our respect.

Whether it’s a solitary driveway tribute, baking Anzac biscuits, a small ceremony with your household, sharing a message for our service personnel, or watching the televised service from the Australian War Memorial on the morning of April 25, I encourage everyone to pause, reflect and say a simple ‘thank you for your service’.

Teach your children about the importance of the day and the service of the original Anzacs as well as the service of the almost two million Australians who have served over more than a century.

Think of those who are currently serving, both in Australia and abroad.

And reflect on the more than 102,000 who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations whose names are inscribed on the walls of the Australian War Memorial.

Anzac Day is now more important than ever and we will remember them.

Petrol prices too high

I, LIKE many motorists in Gippsland, am furious about the petrol prices at several petrol stations in Traralgon and Morwell.

Where’s the competition?

Why are we being slugged when the price of a barrel of oil has dropped to just $20?

We remember them: We may not be able to gather at the Dawn Service, but we can still pay our respects this Anzac Day.

Melbourne petrol prices have dropped to well under $1 per litre.

In my opinion, there is not enough pressure being applied in Gippsland to bring the price down, which it seems is being controlled by the headquarters in Melbourne.

Motorists should let our politicians know that there should be an inquiry into why we are not getting the same benefits at the petrol pump that other areas are.

Panel delivers consensus

FOR the past three years I have chaired the independent Stakeholder Advisory Panel overseeing the Victorian Gas Program’s onshore conventional gas studies.

After fracking was banned in 2017, the Victorian Government wanted to understand two things about onshore conventional gas (which doesn’t need fracking): what’s the potential for new discoveries and what are the risks, benefits and impacts of allowing it to be developed.

The panel includes diverse and passionate representatives from farming, environmental, industry, community and local government backgrounds.

The eight panel members care deeply about their role and about advocating strongly for the people they represent.

The panel and I took a close and careful look into the geoscientific, technical and environmental research to better understand Victoria’s

undiscovered onshore conventional gas resources.

We found a high likelihood of conventional gas onshore in South West Victoria and to a lesser extent in Gippsland.

If developed, this gas would improve energy security while Victoria transitions to a low carbon economy. The science told us that a responsible and well-regulated onshore conventional gas industry would not risk Victoria’s groundwater supplies or agricultural production.

It could create a boost to regional jobs, economies and communities.

Panel members did not always agree with each other or arrive at a consensus.

But they agreed with the science and the integrity of the processes followed.

The panel provided its advice to the Minister for Resources in early 2020.

The Victorian government announced on March 17, 2020 its intention for an orderly restart of the onshore conventional gas industry in Victoria.

ON Monday, my husband and I were walking our little dog for our daily exercise, in the Moe Botanic Gardens.

Almost everyone was being very careful about social distancing, but as we were returning home (about 5.30pm) we had to cross the rather narrow bridge over the river.

A young woman (maybe late

teens, early 20s at most) came running towards us with a primary school aged girl.

I called out to them, as I was already on the bridge, to please stop and wait (my husband and I both fall into one or two of the vulnerable groups, including the fact that we are clearly elderly!).

Neither she nor the little girl in her care hesitated in their running to and onto the bridge, and I had to run, as fast as I could, with the dog, back along the bridge to get out of her way.

If anyone knows these two youngsters, could you please explain to them the possible consequences to us of risking infection?

Take time to reflect this Anzac Day

ANZAC Day and its commemoration is as important this year as it has ever been.

While we can’t gather together as one at our local shrines and RSLs to pay our respects, we can still take the time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices that were made some 105 years ago.

Like many people across our communities, I will rise before the sun this Anzac Day and at 6am will stand at the end of my driveway for a moment’s silence to remember and honour those who fought for us.

Many Australian families have direct family members who proudly served Australia during war time; greatgrandparents, grandparents, parents, siblings.

While for others, they have a loved one who is following in the footsteps of past Anzacs and dedicating their career to serving our country to protect our freedoms, uphold democracy and provide humanitarian efforts both in Australia and throughout the world.

This year has been like no other.

Our armed forces have touched us deeply in Gippsland, actively assisting the response and recovery efforts during summer’s devastating bushfires.

It also won’t be first time that Australians have been unable to gather for Anzac Day ceremonies.

In 1919, some towns cancelled Anzac Day ceremonies due to the risks posed by the Spanish flu.

This only tells us that the ceremonies and commemorative events will return next year with strength and unity, as they did in 1920 and as they have continued to do for over a century. On Saturday, we remember those who served, those who lost their lives, those who serve today and the families who support them in the line of duty.

The freedoms we enjoy today as a nation are due to the extraordinary sacrifice of our past generations.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we

will remember them. Lest we forget.

Autumn flows flush the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rivers

WATER will be released from water storages in the Macalister and Thomson rivers to help support the spawning of migratory fish and flush the estuaries in our river systems.

West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority environmental water resource officer Dr Steph Suter said after recent bushfires in other parts of Gippsland and dry conditions in 2019, this autumnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s freshes were more important than ever. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the Macalister and Thomson rivers,

weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re releasing a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;freshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of water, which means a small pulse of water released over several days, creating a peak in river flows that will help trigger the downstream migration and spawning of Australian grayling,â&#x20AC;? Dr Suter said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will be followed by a baseflow in both rivers.The purpose of the baseflow following the freshes is to provide what we call â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;longitudinal connectivityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which essentially means providing enough depth in the river to allow fish and other animals to move up and down the river.â&#x20AC;?

In the Latrobe River, two â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;freshesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; will be released which will provide beneficial flows in the river and down to the estuary and wetlands, timed either side of the Macalister and Thomson river flows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We carefully time our releases of environmental water to try to get great results for plants, animals and fish,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year, our water release encouraged the rare and endangered Australasian bittern to visit Sale Common. This was the first confirmed

sighting of a bittern in almost 30 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The flows in all three major rivers will also coincide to help flush salt and improve water quality in the lower Latrobe estuary and wetlands.â&#x20AC;?

Dr Suter explained that people may notice a slight increase in river height during the peak flow periods. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very careful not to cause flooding with our water releases, but people will notice that the rivers are slightly higher.â&#x20AC;?

Many rivers have been modified to

provide water for towns, industry and food production.

This means that about half of the natural flow in the rivers is removed each year. As a result, it is difficult for these rivers to support the animals and plants that depend on them.

Water is set aside in the Blue Rock Reservoir,Thomson Reservoir and Lake Glenmaggie to be used to support the animals and plants of our rivers to live, feed and breed and to improve the resilience of these waterways.

Farmers urged to conduct hazard reduction burns

ENVIRONMENT Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) says with weather easing and fire restrictions lifted in some areas, farmers conducting hazard reduction burns should also consider removing any stacks of old tyres on their land.

EPA Gippsland acting region manager Zachary Dornom says a pile of waste tyres is a fire hazard and a threat to the environment.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can stockpile up to 40 tonnes or 5000 standard passenger tyres without needing a permit from EPA, but there are common sense reasons for most property owners to get rid of old tyres,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dornom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A stack of waste tyres is a pile of chemicals waiting to burn; it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t catch fire easily but if it is overrun by

fire it will generate toxic smoke, and burning tyres can be very difficult to extinguish.â&#x20AC;?

Any abandoned stockpile of waste tyres is also an environmental hazard; providing a breeding ground for vermin while the tyres begin to decay and contaminate the soil and groundwater. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Past practices of using old tyres to

contain soil erosion or around newly planted trees are no longer accepted, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s illegal to burn or just dump them,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dornom said.

EPA urged landholders to inspect any tyre stockpile and make a decision to either manage it properly for the good of your farm and your community or send the tyres for recycling or legal disposal in landfill.

Support for local media welcomed THE state government’s support to help regional print media survive has been applauded.

A $4.7 million package was announced on Tuesday following consultation with the Victorian Country Press Association.

The state government has confirmed it will book one page of print advertising and digital advertising in more than

100 outlets each week for six months.

The support for locally-produced and independent public interest journalism was welcomed by Bruce Ellen, publisher of The Express and Gippsland Times.

“I congratulate the Andrews’ Government on this important initiative. Not only does it keep our local community informed in a time of great uncertainty and need for trusted news,

it contributes to sustaining The Express and Gippsland Times to continue to provide our community with their primary source of local news,” Mr Ellen said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the immediate and reliable source of income would help newspapers, the public record of towns and regions throughout the state, get through the

AFTER several months of hot and dry weather, cooler months are just around the corner as more Victorians are retrieving their heaters from hibernation, increasing the risk of house fires.

Deputy Chief Officer Trevor Owen said autumn and winter are the highest risk period for residential fires due to the increased use of heating equipment.

Heating equipment includes fixed electrical and gas powered appliances, an open fire, wood heater and portable electrical heaters or those which use gas or kerosene.

“Having your heaters checked and in good working condition, together with careful and correct use, will greatly reduce the danger these appliances present,” he said.

“CFA attend a large number of preventable house fires. These fires can have devastating consequences, significant injuries and tragically, some fires result in deaths.”

Mr Owen said poorly maintained gas fires could cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We have seen the tragic consequences of this in the past,” he said.

“There can be no greater reason to have your gas heater inspected and serviced than to ensure the safety of loved ones.

“Another common mistake is people drying clothes indoors near heaters and fireplaces, which can be dangerous. Clothes should be kept at least one metre from the heat source.

“Every household should consider their fire safety practices and examine the potential risks around their home.”

PREPARE FOR WINTER Turn off all portable heating and extinguish open fires before leaving home.

Ensure heaters are installed, maintained and operated according to manufacturers’ instructions.

Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire.

Chimneys and flues should be cleaned annually.

Keep wood and other combustibles at least one metre from fire.

Children must be supervised near all types of heating. Maintain a safe distance between children and heating.

College’s remote learning

TRARALGON College students and staff have been embracing remote learning in the first week of term two as the state government told students to learn from home.

Traralgon College acting senior campus principal Narelle Loechel said she was “proud” of how her students had embraced the concept, describing them as proactive, focussed and hard working.

“We are also pretty humbled by the work our teachers are doing, they are going above expectations with the resources to engage with their

classes,” Ms Loechel told The Express.

“It’s unbelievable the way the students are responding, the teachers are creating dynamic lessons for the students, they are learning a heap.”

She said students were required to be at their computers at 9am each morning to meet with their form teachers before splitting off into lessons and take part in interactive sessions.

“Teachers are commenting they are noticing students are chatting more with each other and asking questions,” Ms Loechel said.

understand and not just relying on the teacher to come up with the answer.”

Ms Loechel said she was impressed at the proactive approach from her teachers, with some preparing videos the night before to show kids how to kids understand ideas and concepts.

She said the student leaders were also lending a hand to their classmates by posting handy tips on Facebook and checking-in with those missing the school environment.

Ms Loechel said they were still figuring out how to go about delivering practical subjects such as art, wood and metal or food technology.

She added staff were also encouraging kids to get out for 30 minutes a day for physical exercise.

“The thing that jumps out for me is that our schools provide an element of stability to our community in a time of crisis and that school staff, students and their families are incredibly adaptable when put in new and challenging situations,” she said.

“There is not a rule book to follow to lead learning in a crisis, but with a strong sense of purpose we are making it work for the students in our care.”

THE GIPPSLAND line ranked eighth in the state for reliability and second-last for punctuality for the month of March.

Gippsland V/Line trains ran 96.2 per cent of the time, just above the 96 per cent target.

That figure places us ahead of just Geelong (95.4 per cent), Bendigo (95 per cent) and Albury-Wodonga (87 per cent) on the list of 11 regional rail lines across Victoria.

Our trains ran on time 78.2 per cent of the time, well outside the punctuality target of 92 per cent (within six minutes).

Only Albury-Wodonga (7.9 per cent) ranks lower when it comes to punctuality than Gippsland.

“We identified strengths of our team along with ideas we had heard along the way from participants for instance dance and fitness programs which formed the first iteration of our Sunday-Friday program with a range of different themes.”

Ms Lim said after its first week, Latrobe Streetgames Virtual private group on Facebook gained more than 40 members.

“We wanted to bring as much of the actual Streetgames experience online as possible that includes everyone feeling welcome, that we created a fun and safe space and that we had a timetable in place to ensure teenagers and young adults had some form of routine and something they can look forward to on a regular basis,” she said.

Ms Lim said for social connectedness, new members are welcomed and encouraged to introduce themselves by telling the group

what sport of physical activity they love, what they’ve done in the past or what they’d like to do in future and what they want to get out of the virtual group.

“I play soccer, basketball and footy mostly and looking for fun content and a few laughs and want to help create content,” crew member TJ said.

“I love to be active... I am down to being connected with you all and excited to see what this platform can turn out to be,” crew member Monte said.

Uniting Victoria/Tasmania’s Gippsland acting executive officer Linde Coggan said more than ever in these uncertain times, vulnerable children and young people needed a safe and secure home.

“In Gippsland, we currently have a number of children and young people who are in desperate need of long term, stable homes,” she said.

“In particular, we’re urgently looking for a carer in the Latrobe Valley who can provide long term care for a seven-yearold girl who has disability support needs and attends school fulltime.

“For this child, it would be wonderful if we could find carers who’ve had experience with disability, however we would very much like to hear from people who have a compassionate understanding nature and are considering becoming a foster carer.”

Ms Coggan said foster carers were provided with specialist training and ongoing support, including measures to deal with the current COVID-19 pandemic, so they can best support the children and young people in care.

“Although these are volunteer positions, there is a carer’s allowance to help cover the costs of caring for a child and regular respite care is available,” Ms Coggan said.

“Foster care can sometimes be challenging, but our carers tell us the rewards far outweigh the tough times.”

Recalling a big day for the Harriers

ATHLETICS

WITH the Traralgon Harriers out of action due to coronavirus, we have taken a look back to a significant moment in the club’s history on April 12-13, 1997.

The Traralgon Harriers open relay team created a new world record in winning its event at the 24-hour ultra marathon championships at the Coburg athletics track.

The Harriers veteran relay team also won the veterans section, in a weekend of highlights at the Harold Stevens track where a number of Australian and world records were broken, despite blistering temperatures on both days.

Ultra runners and walkers, together with the relay runners, endured extremes of heat and cold.

Competitors were drained by Saturday’s 30-degree heat.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, when the previous day’s heat had radiated out through the clear night sky, runners shivered as they jogged warm-up laps in jumpers, beanies and gloves. Ironically, by mid-morning competitors again grabbed water from drink stations to pour over their heads in an attempt to cool down.

With team members coming from throughout the Valley and Gippsland, and an age range across both teams spanning fifty years, the Harriers runners were thrilled with their double victory.

The team set a new Australian and world 24-hour track relay record for

this event, subject to official ratification, in winning the open relay, sprinting a total distance of 385.2 kilometres from midday Saturday to noon Sunday, at an average distance run of over 38km for each runner.

Competitors run half hour legs every five hours throughout the 24-hour period, with little or no sleep between runs.

The team of Ian Cornthwaite, Birgit Schuckmann-Wilson, Darrell Cross, Brett Franklin, Steve Postlethwaite, Michael Lancaster, Gavin Jarvis, Steve Gilbert, Bruce Salisbury and Neil Griffiths set a blistering pace, which it maintained to the finish.

Team anchor Ian Cornthwaite finished his final relay leg fresh enough to compete in, and win, the 8km fun run on Sunday morning.

Teenagers Brett Franklin and Michael Lancaster pushed the team to an early lead that was never challenged.

The sole woman runner in the team, former Olympic marathon runner and new Harriers coach, Birgit SchuckmannWilson, eclipsed her male opponents on the track.

With the team approaching a final winning margin of 62km, last leg runner Gavin Jarvis battled illness and heat in the final half hour of the championships.

Showing great mental strength he ran hard to overtake the world record distance and set a new team mark of 385.2km, less than a kilometre beyond the old record of 384.4km set in 1996 by the Yan Yean Road Runners.

The veteran’s team won the Relay Challenge for the third year in a row, demolishing its target distance of 300 km to finish ahead of a number of the open teams.

The team of Glenn Fisher, Steve Eagle, Lee Graham, Belinda Issell, Chester Goulter, Frank Ward, Peter Grixti, Mick Bridle, David Graham and Barry Higgins maintained its speed throughout the 24 hours, slowing slightly only during the first and last stages which

were both run in the energy sapping heat.

In the individual 24-hour ultra marathon, winners Helen Stanger and Yiannis Kouros repeated their 1996 wins, but the sweet taste of victory was, for each, soured by misfortune.

Kouros completed his first marathon distance in three hours, and completed over six marathons on end, not stopping even for minor calls of nature.

BONDED TOGETHER AT MORWELL

NEW RECORD AT TRAFALGAR

WHEN Morwell played Warragul in a Central Gippsland FL match in 1933, one third of the team were Bonds.

The six were Harry, Lou, Ted, Vic, Tom and Jock.

All were recruited from district club Yinnar.

On July 23, 2016, Trafalgar ruckman Chris De Haas broke Brian Sim’s 330 games record with Trafalgar.

FIRST TO 100 SEAN Cattanach became the first player to play 100 games with Toongabbie in the North Gippsland FL. The club only lasted ten years 1987-1997.

TWO OF A KIND

TWO players of the same name were opposed to each other in a thirds match between Boolarra and Maryvale.

They were both named Paul Williams and both wore number five.

ALONG CAME JONES

THE Morwell team to play Traralgon in 1887 comprised seven players named Jones (five were brothers) and the other two were not related.

The captain was Jack Jones.

FIVE BROTHERES AT ALLAMBEE

AT one stage the Allambee Football Club had five brothers playing in the one season.

They were Jim, Cecil, Arthur, Bert and James Dyke.

300 UP FOR JOHN

ON May 24 1986, John Birmingham played his 300th game for Nambrok in the North Gippsland FL, only a few weeks later Neville Salmon played his 400th game for Stratford.

His total of 266.18 km was disappointingly short of his own world record and well under his target of the magical 300km, to which he has come so close, so often.

A member of the Harriers veteran team who ran the final relay leg in the last 30 minutes of the race realised, to his horror, that he could not keep up with Kouros, who had already run non-stop for 23 and a half hours!

In outright second place was women’s winner Helen Stanger, who ran 206km, again short of her 220km Australian record, in a race that for her was marred by illness in the first few hours.

Taken from the course on a stretcher, Stanger recovered to finish ahead of race walker Carmella Carrassi, who broke her own Australian and world 24-hour track and all time best records.

COL METCALF FINALLY RETIRES

COLIN Metcalf (Traralgon Tyers United) finally retired after playing 534 games of football with various clubs.

He called it a day on May 15, 1993.

NORTH GIPPSLAND’S LONG HISTORY THE North Gippsland Football League has a long history stretching back to 1923 when the Cowwarr FA merged with the Traralgon District FA to form the Cowwarr FL, then in 1955 the league merged again, this time with the Sale District FL to form the Sale-Cowwarr FL. In 1965 the name changed to the North Gippsland FL.

UMPIRE OUT THE first semi-final of the Morwell/ Trafalgar match (CGFL) in 1951 was held up for several minutes in the first quarter when umpire Male was knocked over when the ball, kicked off the ground by a Morwell player, hit him on the side of the face.

Play stopped immediately and players of both sides supported him until trainers arrived. He received quite a deal of attention before he was able to continue.

TOWN SPLITS IN TWO IN 1925 at the Meeting of the Morwell-Mirboo FA held in Yinnar, the Mirboo North delegates argued that Yinnar was not suitable for a meeting.

In protest they withdrew their team and joined the South Gippsland FA. A newly-formed team called North Mirboo replaced them.

The town of Mirboo North was split with one team (Mirboo North) playing in the South Gippsland FA and the other North Mirboo in the Morwell-Mirboo FA. Both clubs shared the same facilities at Mirboo North.

Noah is running with a purpose

A NINE-year-old Trafalgar boy has found a way to stay active during COVID-19 lockdowns while raising several thousands of dollars for sick kids.

Noah Keltie is in the midst of clocking up 100 kilometres by running in between five and seven-and-a-half kilometres a day.

His mum Melissa said the “super fit” primary school student was well over the half way mark and had so far raised more than $3,700 for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Ms Keltie said the keen basketball and tennis player was looking for a way to keep active when his sports were put on ice due to coronavirus restrictions.

“He was starting to get a bit anxious so he began running to keep himself active, he is an active and super fit kid and was missing that high intensity outlet,” Ms Keltie said.

“One of my friends suggested he could put

his running to a good use and he thought this was a good idea, so set himself a 100 kilometre target.”

Ms Keltie said she was impressed at Noah’s self-motivation and discipline and he has stuck at it with no prompting from his parents.

She said he gives himself two rest days a week and has the use of a treadmill just in case he can’t get outside for a run.

Ms Keltie said Noah’s dad Jim has also been upping his own physical fitness by going out with his son, and his principal even wants to join him for a leg around the school oval.

“Noah is too little to do it on his own, so him and his dad do it together, but dad can’t keep up with him, Noah will keep going,” Ms Keltie said.

“Dad is getting fitter, he was impressed he ran more than seven kilometres with Noah, and the dog also gets a nice workout every day.”

Innovative approach a winner for archers

ONE sport which has been able to keep competition going during these uncertain times as a result of coronavirus is archery.

Morwell-based club Twin City Archers Gippsland is staging the COV Medal Win in Isolation Series.

The brainchild of club member David Gaze, the series features weekly events where competitors can set up at home.

The ideal length of space is 18m, but the beauty of the competition is if you have a smaller area to work with, the face (target) is scaled to suit your requirements.

Club member Peter Bennett has been among the nearly 200 people to compete in the series.

“My set-up is on the back deck at home and I’ve got a five-metre space,” he said.

“Even though the face is smaller because it has been scaled to cater

to my distance, it looks exactly the same in the scope.

“My scores so far have been around their normal average and as a competitor, it looks and feels no different.

“I think that is what it is proving so popular.”

The reach of the series is spreading by the week, with those in Australia joined by fellow archers in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States, Indonesia and Canada.

Gaze has been delighted with the response to his concept.

“We had 100 the first week and it has grown every week since which has not surprised me,” he said.

“It allows people to compete against one another regardless of where they live on an equal playing field.”

Competitors put their scores into an app developed by the Europeanbased company Rcherz.com, which tracks their progress in real time and ranks them against the worldwide rivals.

Gaze, who oversees the running of the competition, said the biggest workload came in the development phase.

“We had to develop and produce about 1500 faces on PDF, either as A4 landscape/portrait or A3 landscape/ portrait for people to print out and set up at home,” he said.

“There was some user misunderstanding in the early stages, but that is not an issue now.

“We run each of the rounds over a 24-hour window which takes out the problems with different time zones.

Another positive aspect of the competition is the engagement by archers to display photos of themselves at home and share them, with the backyard, hallway and farm paddocks popular spots to set up.

“It is wonderful to see archers connecting together during this time of isolation,” he said.
