LATROBE City is kicking goals in tourism with latest statistics reporting increases across the board in visitor numbers for the year ending 2019.

According to Tourism Australia data, Gippsland recorded its highest-ever visitation numbers, placing Latrobe City in an ideal spot to recover from the COVID-19 economic downturn.

Destination Gippsland chief executive Terry Robinson said the figures represented a “silver lining”among the dark clouds of drought, bushfires and coronavirus lockdowns.

Mr Robinson said Latrobe City’s visitor economy was “very strong”and “well-ahead” of Gippsland’s average growth with a 12 per cent increase in visitor numbers and a 39 per cent increase in spending.

Latrobe City reported the third highest growth across Gippsland’s local government areas, behind Bass Coast and Wellington shires.

Overall, Gippsland had an 11 per cent increase in visitation and a 15 per cent increase in spending, and was the second highest performer in regional Victoria behind the Great Ocean Road.

A BUDGEREE woman and her sister are pleading for the federal government to bring them home from Morocco as the nation has halted commercial flights due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Kelly Van Den Burg and her sister Tracy Lewis, who lives in Korumburra, have been holed up inside an apartment in the north African nation for nearly a month while waiting for a flight home.

“The problem is that we have no way to get out of Morocco. It may take months to get out,” Ms Van Den Burg said.

Ms Van Den Burg was one of this year’s Boolarra Australia Day citizens of the year for her role in organising fodder drops for livestock in bushfires.

She began planning her international adventure with her sister two years ago to visit Spain and Morocco, leaving in midFebruary well before COVID-19 hit the world headlines.

They arrived in Morocco on March 4 and were following Australian travel advice, but later heard whispers that Morocco was closing its airspace so attempted to cut their trip short.

The sisters tried to get a flight out but had just missed the last plane to Australia by hours, so decided to book an apartment in a small coastal village to ride out the situation.

“We heard there were Aussies camping at Marrakesh airport and queuing up for four hours trying to get on flights going to the UK,” Ms Van Den Burg said.

“We heard the flights were being overbooked and there were fights breaking out at the airport.”

She said people now needed a permit to leave their home to either visit a doctor or go shopping, and it was compulsory to wear a mask outside.

The two sisters had been staying motivated by posting a daily YouTube cooking video and occasionally heading out for fresh produce.

“The community here is amazing, they are kind and generous and we’ve been treated really well, the hospitality is amazing,” she said.

Ms Van Den Burg said she was keen to head back to her Budgeree farm and get stuck into some gardening.

“We have a permaculture set-up and grow our own food.

I’ve been planning things from here and ordering seeds and discussing winter crops with my partner,” she said.

Federal Member for Monash Russell Broadbent said he had been passing on his constituent’s situation to the Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne.

“She has been wonderful in her response to people’s needs. The difficulty is governments on the ground based in other countries we have no control over,” Mr Broadbent said.

“We are organising repatriation flights all over the world, we are having these situations all over the world, we are doing the very best we can in every situation.”

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said the Australian Embassy had helped around 250 Australians “identify commercial flight options to leave the country”.

She said the embassy was continuing to provide support and information on local conditions.

“The Australian Ambassador in Rabat is working with the government of Morocco,commercial airlines and other governments to identify special commercial options for those Australians seeking to leave,” she said.

“Australian consular officials around the world are doing all they can to assist Australians overseas impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Region’s tourist numbers on the rise “Visitors who came to Latrobe City tended to spend more than the average Gippsland visitor, this is a sign that there are good things to spend money on the Latrobe Valley,” Mr Robinson told The Express.

Mr Robinson said this was testament to big ticket sporting and cultural events driven by the Latrobe Valley Authority and Latrobe City Council.

He pointed to key drawcards such as the Morwell International Rose Garden Festival, Latrobe Regional Gallery exhibitions and sporting blockbusters such as the Big Bash Leagure.

“People are coming to Latrobe for events, business travel as

well as holidays and leisure,” he said.

“Visiting friends and relatives is a strong part of the market, they come for things like weddings and stay in commercial accommodation and then visit things like local wineries.”

Mr Robinson said that infrastructure projects such as bike and rail trails will be a key factor in helping the region lure visitors once lockdowns are lifted.

“Road trips and regional tourism will be the first thing people will be able to do after lockdown, we expect regional Victoria to be quickest to recover,” he said.

“Latrobe is well-positioned to bounce back quickly, people will come to the Valley and visit Mount Baw Baw,Walhalla or the Morwell National Park.”

A Latrobe City spokesman said

council was “proud of the growth we have experienced in visitor numbers to the region primarily based around the attraction of high profile major events”.

He said this was made possible through infrastructure improvements and “world-class facilities” to attract these events and building strong relationships with government and sporting bodies.

“From an events perspective, Latrobe City Council is well placed to hit the ground running with officers continuing planning on key major events including rescheduling postponed events,” the spokesperson said.

“We are having ongoing communication with event stakeholders to ensure events are ready to be delivered when the time comes.”

Gippsland musicians put on a virtual show

MORE than 150 mainly Gippsland-bases musicians are imbibing the spirit of classic Oz rockers INXS by taking part in a mass online rendition of Never Tear Us Apart.

Musicians kept time with a basic prerecorded track to play along at home for a collective recording that was mixed down and uploaded to YouTube.

The idea was coined by Sale-based muso Brett Glover, who was looking for a way to keep musicians connected during COVID-19 lockdowns. “There had been a lot of stuff online of people playing on their own, I began sharing this with my friends as a way to play together, then one thing led to another and it began to build,� Mr Glover said. “A few days into the project we saw others doing similar things, such as symphony orchestras or pub choirs.�

Mr Glover said the project snowballed with musos joining in from Canada and Germany and even some high profile names jumped on board including Grace Knight from Aussie band Eurogliders.

He said Never Tear Us Apart was a classic

Aussie tune song that most people knew, with opportunities for different instruments to be involved. “It starts with strings, there is a sax solo and there are great harmonies,� he said. “We have had people adding guitar, bass, drum and vocals, and people are putting in parts not in the original track. We even had a kazoo solo and some dance. “Some are playing basic chords and others are seasoned musicians adding something kooky.�

Mr Glover recruited the expertise of South Gippsland sound engineer Andy Steward to mix the track and local visual producer Brett Tippet to get a video clip together. “I heard the mix this morning and it sounds like we spent a million dollars on it. Putting it together was huge, we’ve been working on this for three weeks,� Mr Glover said. “I’ve learnt so much in the past three weeks, the benefits of lockdown is I have enforced time to get to know the technology on hand and sit and spend lots of hours with the software.�

A NEW case of coronavirus in the Latrobe Valley was recorded yesterday.

The case takes the total of cases in the region to seven, although Latrobe Regional Hospital has confirmed four of its diagnosed cases have recovered.

The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 1328 - an increase of nine from Saturday.

This increase included three people diagnosed in mandatory quarantine in city hotels, who have recently arrived from overseas.

There was one new death reported, a man in his eighties who died in a Melbourne hospital on Friday.

Fifteen people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

The total number of cases is made up of 689 men and 639 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 134 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

Two cases attributed to community transmission have now been attributed to a known source after further investigation.

A total of 1188 people have recovered.

More than 82,000 tests have been completed.

Health fears raised

A 67-year-old Traralgon woman is fearing for her health amid concerns over state government recommendations that allow people to inspect occupied rental properties.

Christine Smith-Stephens is six months into a one-year lease in a one-bedroom unit that is listed for sale.

Ms Smith-Stephens said she is concerned that strangers entering her house to inspect the property flies in the face of COVID-19 hygiene directives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Under normal circumstances this would not be an issue, but during the coronavirus pandemic itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a licence to kill,â&#x20AC;? Ms SmithStephens said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very concerned as I live in a really tiny unit and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want people coming through as they will be on top of me. Ms Smith-Stephens is accusing the state government of caving in to real estate industry groups to allow inspections of occupied properties. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing all the right things, I only go out when I have to. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unfair to ask people to isolate and then have this situation that puts me at risk,â&#x20AC;? she said.

A government spokeswoman said property inspections were allowed, as long as it was through a private appointment, including on tenanted properties.

the naming of the vessels represented a “significant milestone” for the new ships.

“The names encapsulate the importance of these littoral regions around Australia and mark their significance to the nation’s security and prosperity,” Vice Admiral Noonan said.

“Furthermore, the naming of each vessel is the beginning of a longstanding bond between the named region, communities and centres and that of the Royal Australian Navy, our Navy people and the men and women who will ultimately serve in each of these ships.”

Vice Admiral Noonan formally thanked industry partners Luerssen Australia and ASC which collectively built and consolidated the keel blocks for what will be a 1600 tonne vessel.

The HMAS Gippsland was named in honour of the “highly productive farming area, providing Melbourne with most of its vegetables

and dairy produce” in a Navy description.

“Brown coal has been mined in the area for many decades, and there are numerous offshore oil and gas deposits in nearby Bass Strait.”

The new Arafura Class ships will be bigger than the Armidale Class patrol boats in service with the Royal Australian Navy.

The shipbuilding program is creating 600 jobs involving more than 300 small and medium businesses.

Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said the new ships would offer greater endurance and capability for patrolling Australia’s maritime borders.

“Defence and industry are working closely to support our sovereign shipbuilding programs and Australian jobs in these challenging times, in a way that is safe for employees and the community,” Ms Reynolds said.

GIPPSLAND is in the spotlight with new Arafura Class navy boats named in honour of Australia’s regions as part of the federal government’s $90 billion National Shipbuilding Program.

The HMAS Gippsland is the fourth of the nation’s fleet of brand-new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels being built in Adelaide and Western Australia.

The navy has announced the names of the next five new boats the HMAS Pilbara, HMAS Gippsland, HMAS Illawarra, and HMAS Carpentaria, with the first two being the HMAS Arafura and HMAS Eyre.

Navy chief, Vice Admiral Michael Noonan, revealed the names in an official keel laying ceremony for the HMAS Eyre earlier this month, as part of a naval tradition that brings good luck to the vessel by placing a coin under the keel.

Vice Admiral Noonan said

GIPPSLAND regional Aussie Disposals outlets are remaining open despite news that the Melbourne parent company is going into voluntary administration and closing some city stores.

Aussie Disposals Traralgon franchise owner Steve Asmussen said he had been assuring customers that it would be “business as usual” for the Traralgon, Moe, Bairnsdale, Sale and Warragul stores.

“We are staying open because we are an independently-owned franchise store,” Ms Asmussen said.

“Aussie Disposals in the city is our parent company and anything that happens at the Dandenong [head office] won’t affect us.”

Coronavirus restrictions prohibiting camping, fishing and hunting in Victoria had a big impact on the back of droughts and bushfires, sparking the parent company into voluntary administration.

Mr Asmussen said he closed the shop for 10 days when the COVID-19 restrictions were put into place, but reopened about a fortnight ago in time to sell winter woollies and work gear.

“We are selling a lot of hiking boots, rain jackets and gumboots.

Winter is usually strong as we sell more warm clothing such as thermals and woolly socks,” he said.

“The only thing that may change is some supply of stock as some wholesalers close doors or restrict their hours which means restricted stock.”

Aussie Disposals managing sales director Mark Purvis said the Moe outlet would remain open even though it was operated by the head office.

The Purvis family opened the first Aussie Disposals store in in Moe 1962.

“We are working extremely hard to keep Moe open along with our other stores, as Moe is where it all started,” Mr Purvis told The Express.

“We are very strong in Gippsland and have strong patronage down there, we need the support more than ever from our customers.”

Mr Purvis said they had closed 11 stores mainly inside metro shopping centres, but country and outdoor shopping strip outlets were “trading okay even though sales are down”.

You can have your say in Youth Survey MISSION Australia’s Youth Survey 2020 is now open, with the charity extending the opening period to encourage many Latrobe Valley young people aged between 15 and 19 to have their say.

Now in its 19th year, the Mission Australia Youth Survey is the largest online survey of its kind in Australia and provides an important annual snapshot into the experiences and views of young people across Australia.

This year in the midst of the COVID-19 public health challenge, Mission Australia state leader Michele Leonard said the Youth Survey continues to be an important platform for young people to have their voices heard.

“In this rapidly changing world, young voices matter,” Ms Leonard said.

“Now more than ever, we need to hear from Latrobe young people about the issues that are affecting them.

“During this period where many young people are adapting to change, it’s important that they have meaningful opportunities like the Youth Survey to share their thoughts, concerns and aspirations. Their responses are important in shaping policy and service changes that affect them.

“In times of increasing uncertainty it is crucial we take the time to listen to what young people have to say on issues that affect them, their networks and our nation.

“We hope that during a time when so many young people will be self-isolating, that they could spare 15 minutes of their time to participate in our Youth Survey.”

The Youth Survey 2019 was completed by more than 25,000 young people, including 4,445 aged 15-19 in Victoria.

Young Victorians nominated mental health, the environment and equity and discrimination as the most important issues facing Australia today.

It also found that only around one in 15 young Victorians feel they have a voice all of the time in public affairs.

“In a climate where young people are actively seeking out opportunities to make their views known, the Youth Survey 2020 offers a safe and reliable platform to speak up. Their valuable insights provide up-to-date evidence to inform advocacy and policy change on the issues that affect their lives,” Ms Leonard said.

FLEXIBLE and remote learning is underway at schools right across the Latrobe Valley.

Trafalgar High School staff have been working with education authorities and teams to ensure the transition for Term 2 has been as smooth as possible.

“With the planning that has occurred we do feel as though we are well prepared in supporting our students and families with the delivery of learning and teaching online,” principal Jane Mersey said.

“We appreciate how unsettling the last few weeks have been for students, in particular for our senior students, our families and our community.”

Compass, an online student management tool used by many schools including Trafalgar High.

A range of software is supporting the school’s VCE students with their Unit One and Unit Three studies.

Premier Daniel Andrews’ message of “students who can learn from home, must learn from home” has been emphasised by Trafalgar High staff to the school community.

The majority of Trafalgar High’s staff are working remotely, but Ms Mersey confirmed a select group of staff were still based on campus.

“The principal team and a skeleton staff will remain at school for the purpose of ongoing leadership and coordination of our learning and teaching online program,” she said.

Community events focus of program THE final round of Baw Baw Shire’s Community Sponsorship Program this financial year is open for applications until May 3.

The program provides funding support to local community events as well as to ambassadors that positively promote the Baw Baw Shire region.

Community groups are encouraged to apply for funding through the program, which has supported a number of events including those hosted by the Drouin Ficifolia Festival, the Trafalgar Holden Museum and the Baw Baw Arts Alliance.

Eligible events may receive up to $5000 in sponsorship funding.

Eligible Baw Baw ambassadors may receive up to $500 for individuals or $1500 for groups or teams.

Community events may still be 12 months away, but can still be planned for and are eligible to receive funding.

“We acknowledge that events and activities aren’t taking place now, however, this program gives community groups extra time to plan for a great event when we get to the other side of this situation,” Mayor Danny Goss said.

“Community events and activities are some of the best things about living in Baw Baw Shire, and this program is a great way to take your event to the next level.”

Get poems in for our competition WE’VE received a stack of entries for The Express’ poetry competition.

Budding poets from across the Latrobe Valley have submitted their finest work in a bid to win.

The competition is split into three categories - juniors (12 years and under), teenagers (13-19 years) and adults (19 years plus).

The poems will be judged by a threemember panel, with $100 cash prize for each category winner.

Submitted entries must have the entrant’s name, contact details and the category they are eligible for.

Entries can be submitted via email to news@lvexpress.com.au with the subject line Poetry Competition or via post to The Express, 21 George Street, Morwell, Victoria, 3840.

The competition closes on Thursday, May 7 and winners announced in The Express following that date.

Don’t ignore your own health AUSTRALIANS, including those in the Latrobe Valley, are being warned not to play down or ignore medical emergencies or existing conditions during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (ACDPA) is concerned some people are overlooking their existing chronic conditions and even failing to call triple zero (000) for an ambulance in an immediate life-threatening emergency.

This delay could put them or their loved ones at risk of disastrous consequences, lengthier hospital stays and even death.

ACDPA chair Sharon McGowan said it was vital people sought urgent medical help when it was needed.

“If you, or someone with you, requires urgent medical help, do not hesitate to call triple zero (000),” Ms McGowan said.

“I understand some Australians may be concerned about being a burden on our doctors and nurses at this busy time or be worried about contracting coronavirus in hospitals.

“But essential services are still running in our hospitals and every precaution is being taken to protect patients and their families throughout the entire health system.”

Many patients with chronic conditions, like diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and cancer need ongoing treatment and care to manage their health. Other conditions like heart attack and stroke require immediate medical attention.

Ms McGowan added the health system is still available for medical emergencies, life-sustaining treatments like dialysis and transplant care, as well as ongoing care for those with existing medical conditions.

“I am hearing heart-breaking stories of people who are risking their lives unnecessarily by not calling an ambulance in a medical emergency,” she said.

“This includes two patients with stroke who stayed at home where their conditions worsened, instead of presenting to hospital.

Reasons to call triple zero (000) for an ambulance include: ■ Chest pain or chest tightness.

■ Sudden onset of weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg.

■ Breathing difficulties.

■ Unconsciousness.

■ Uncontrollable bleeding.

■ A sudden collapse or unexplained fall.

■ Unexplained fitting in adults.

■ Injury from a major car accident.

■ A fall from a great height.

■ Serious assault, including stabbing or shooting.

■ Severe burns, particularly in young children and infants who are fitting or have an ongoing fever.

“Stroke is a time-critical medical emergency and as each minute passed, their brain cells died.

“This is incredibly distressing because these patients could have received time-critical treatment, but are enduring much more serious disabilities as a result of the delay.”

Ms McGowan said hospitals across the country have taken a raft of precautions to maximise safety in COVID and non-COVID areas.

She added they are also minimising the length of stay for patients, with Telehealth consultations (phone or video appointments) available for follow-up care.

Ms McGowan reiterated people must always call triple zero immediately in a medical emergency, no matter where you live or what age you may be.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late,” she said.

Scouts are prepared with new technology WITH schools across the state using remote learning in Term 2, 1st Newborough, as a local group of Scouts Victoria, has made plans on what that means for the scouting program.

Volunteer group leader Andrew Corrigan conducted a meeting with the adult volunteers of each age section to ensure young people still benefit from the social connection membership of the scouts offers.

“Leaders and supporting adults from all across the state have poured all their spare energies into developing resources for a ‘Scouting from Home’ program and our volunteers will use these ideas as well as their own contributions to give our youth an online replacement for Scouting,” he said.

“Our leaders will start virtual meetings with our youth members in all sections from next week, with the Rovers, young adults aged 18 to 25, already having run four weeks of online programs.

“1st Newborough are making some fantastic plans for delivering the Scouting program to our members.

Siddle hoping to stay with Victoria

PETER Siddle is optimistic his playing future will be decided in the ‘next couple of weeks’.

The Latrobe Valley export has been the subject of interstate interest, although stressed his desire is to remain in Victorian colours.

“I still want to play for Victoria and be at Victoria, but a few states have shown interest and that’s not bad when you’re going to be 36, 37 (years of age),” Siddle said on The Unplayable Podcast.

“It’s nice to be wanted.

“We’ve got no idea at the minute where things are going to head, where contracts are going to be

Siddle, who retired from international cricket last December, took 32 wickets in the Sheffield Shield last summer.

COMMUNITY football clubs are against the idea of playing games without crowds, casting further doubt on local leagues kicking off this year.

While the AFL needs to push ahead with a shortened homeand-away season, country and metropolitan leagues appear likely to sit out 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Holding games behind closed doors has been deemed unrealistic by local clubs, who rely heavily on matchday gate, food and bar takings for survival.

The cost of staging games without spectators would be too much of a burden on volunteer-run clubs

when money can’t be recouped through regular means.

Some league officials across Victoria have told AAP they would consider commencing their seasons if federal government restrictions on mass gatherings are relaxed back to 500 or less.

But complications would still arise, with up to four football games and eight netball matches sometimes played at the same sporting complex.

It would leave little room for supporters to enter grounds.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed last week there will be no change to current stage three restrictions for at least another four weeks.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, said even when restrictions are first eased, which could happen in mid-May

at the earliest, it would unlikely to involve allow large gatherings of people.

Still, various leagues remain optimistic of shortened seasons, starting in mid-to-late June.

Like the AFL at a professional level, all community football has been halted until at least May 31.

The Eastern Football Netball League surveyed its 45 clubs, with almost half voting to abandon the season now.

Ovens and Murray Football Netball League chairman David Sinclair said the border competition’s latest possible start period is early August.

“If a grand final will be beyond the 31st of October then we’ll just put the cue in the rack and start planning for 2021,” he told AAP. “Unfortunately you need people at games; you need a gate, bar

MOE trainer John Pascoe engineered a boilover success when Vainstream won the $200,000 Spendthrift Australia VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Much of the talk prerace was centred around Oakleigh Plate winner Pippie, who started an even-money favourite, but she could only muster sixth behind the Latrobe Valley-trained speedster.

Under the urgings of jockey Noel Callow, Vainstream ($12) rattled home to beat Street Icon by a length, with Teleplay rounding out the trifecta.

“He absolutely deserved to win that race,” a delighted Pascoe told Racing.com post-race.

The victory continued what has been a top preparation for

Vainstream, clearly the headline act of Pascoe’s boutique stable.

He belied his bolter’s odds of 200-1 to run an excellent fifth in the Oakleigh Plate at Group 1 level and was fourth in the Listed Hareeba Stakes at Mornington.

“We’ve had to work him out, it’s taken a long time,” Pascoe said.

“Now we’ve got him under control and he loves racing.”

A son of Bel Esprit out of the bonny mare Yasey San, who was raced by Pascoe, Vainstream earned his connections $127,850 following the 1.09.30 run.

Pascoe said it was likely that the five-year-old gelding had done enough to earn a spell. “(He’ll) probably head to the paddock,” he said.

“I’ll talk to the owners and see what they think.

“He’s had a few starts this time in and he deserves a well-earned break.”

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

Royal Snack’s Moe Cups on the menu NO horse has captivated the Latrobe Valley quite like Royal Snack.

Even now, more than two decades after he won four consecutive Moe Cups, the son of Lunchtime still evokes rich memories.

Royal Snack is in an exclusive club alongside the Western District legend Puramaka as horses to win four country cups.

Puramaka had a mortgage on the Hamilton Cup during the 1970s and Royal Snack produced a similar stranglehold when it came to the Valley’s best-known race.

So let’s rewind to 1993, a time when Kevin Sheedy’s Baby Bombers won the AFL flag, Sale of the Century was still dominating TV screens and Eric Bana proved the headline act of a comedy night at the Royal Exchange Hotel in Traralgon.

Little did anyone know that the first chapter of a remarkable story would be penned when the 1993 Moe Cup rolled around.

Royal Snack certainly attracted attention in the lead-up, having won seven of his 32 career starts, including metropolitan victories at Caulfield, Moonee Valley and Sandown.

Trained by George Hanlon, Royal Snack was sent out by punters as the 9-2 favourite and duly delivered as Garry Howe reported in The Express on October 15, 1993.

It was a case of third time lucky for owner Keith Robinson when Royal Snack stormed home from a seemingly impossible position to win yesterday’s CUB Moe Cup (2050m).

Robinson, a Dandenong businessman, had run second in the cup with Ima Red Man in 1987 and 1989, the latter to legendary American jockey Willie Shoemaker on Cosign.

He and trainer George Hanlon had considered a third crack at the prize as far back as August when approached by Moe committeeman Mick Johnson at the Darwin Cup meeting.

Royal Snack, a half-brother to AJC Derby winner Innocent King, will now contest either the Kyneton or Ballarat Cups.

The cup win was a triumph for former Adelaide jockey Alf Matthews in only his second trip to the course and his first ride on the horse.

Royal Snack returned 12 months later to defend his crown.

His form since the 1993 triumph was mixed, unplaced in eight starts before combining with jockey Paddy Payne to win the Healthy Diet - Try It Cup at Bendigo, just 10 days out from his Moe Cup defence.

As a result, local bookmaker Gerry Geilman installed Royal Snack the 7-2 favourite ahead of Ride The Tide (4-1) and Main Strike (6-1).

This time Royal Snack received the front page treatment from The Express on October 14, 1994.

Epsom stayer Royal Snack yesterday overcame a career threatening injury to become only the fourth horse in 47 years to win successive CUB Moe Cups.

Royal Snack was seriously hurt soon after winning last year’s Cup and veteran trainer George Hanlon conceded he was lucky to get another run out of it.

Yet the six-year-old showed no signs of the injury yesterday, when, patiently ridden by Paddy Payne, careered past Hi Solid to win the cup by one-and-a-half lengths.

Royal Snack’s legend was growing and such was his upswing in form that trainer Hanlon headed on an international adventure.

Royal Snack contested the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Sha Tin in April 1995, running a game fourth in a race worth more than AUD$650,000.

By comparison, the Group 2 assignments he was contesting on home soil such as the Blamey Stakes and Carlyon Cup were worth $100,000.

Following his Hong Kong odyssey, Royal Snack had a four-month break as connections targeted a third straight Moe Cup. “He’s not going quite as well (as in the past two years), but he hasn’t slipped much,” trainer Hanlon said in a pre-race interview with The Express.

The biggest Moe race crowd in six years witnessed history in the making yesterday when Royal Snack won his third successive Moe Cup in course record time.

Connections are already talking a return trip next year for an unprecedented fourth straight cup win.

The only other horse to achieve a Moe Cup hat-trick was gallant mare Hardway from 1953 to 1955.

Ironically, she and Royal Snack both carried three different jockeys to victory.

Hardway was ridden by Alan Burton, Dan Laskey and Les Whittle and Royal Snack was partnered in the first year by Alf Matthews, in the second by Patrick Payne and this year by apprentice Brett Prebble.

Payne had the opportunity to ride Royal Snack but instead opted for the unplaced Change of Fortune.

In running, Prebble settled Royal Snack back in the field and peeled five wide at the turn to make a winning run.

He overhauled tearaway leader Red Pax in the straight to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

Clicko and Cessna ran on from back in the field to fill the minor placings.

The cracking early pace set by Red Pax set up a course record winning time of 2:03.9, shaving one-tenth of a second off the record set by 1992 cup winner Ahora.

The win also built on the impressive race record of master trainer George Hanlon.

He has now won the cup six times with Drummond in 1967, Tipping Time in 1972, Flying Gem and Royal Snack in the past three years.

Hanlon, who won at Caulfield the previous day with Cyclone Watch, did not make it to Moe yesterday, but sent his deputy Bruce Jenkins, who also has a long history with the race.

Jenkins rode two Moe Cup winners in the 1950s, Liberal King and Lady Replica and also saddled up Royal Snack for his first win.

“What a champion this bloke is,” Jenkins said after the race.

“I don’t think we’ll have much trouble talking the owner into coming back again next year.”

The owner Keith Robinson did not rule out a fourth cup start, saying “there’s no reason why he can’t come again and win again.”

Robinson’s words would prove prophetic.

In 1996, Royal Snack was eight years of age, and it appeared to many that his best days may have been behind him.

If Royal Snack wins, he will surpass the record of smart mare Hardway that has stood ffor over 40 years.

Hardway achieved the only other cup hat-trick back in the 1950s.

Royal Snack drifted from 8-1 to 12-1 with bookmakers as the likes of Station Hand, prepared by Peter Hayes (9-4) and the Clarry Conners-trained Deja Slew (7-1), took up the lion share of market percentage.

Here’s how the now legendary 1996 Moe Cup transpired, as reported by Garry Howe in The Express.

Veteran trainer George Hanlon is not one to get carried away, but he was clearly taken by the moment at Moe last Thursday when Royal Snack won his record-breaking fourth successive Moe Cup. Hanlon, learning up against the winner’s stall, was transfixed on Royal Snack’s ample fframe as he was being paraded after the race.

“Didn’t he run good?” he asked no-one in particular, before answering his own question with: “Gee the horse ran good!”

It was new ground for Hanlon, who has won almost every major race in Australia, but has never produced a horse to win the same race in four successive years. Few have.

It is believed Puramaka - trained by the late Kevin Lafferty - is the only horse to mirror the feat by winning the Hamilton Cup from 1977-80.

The previous record of three straight Moe Cup wins by gallant mare Hardway (1953-55) had stood for more than 40 years.

Many believe the feat of Royal Snack will not be bettered.

Four to the floor: Paddy Payne was back in the saddle to win the 1996 Moe Cup aboard Royal Snack, who equalled Puramaka as gallopers to win the same country cup four times.

Cup win, had been looming as Royal Snack’s last great performance.

He finished no better than sixth in four runs during the autumn of 1996 and spring hadn’t been looking a whole lot better.

In three of his five starts before Moe, Royal Snack ran last and while Hanlon used the same lead-up as 12 months previously at Bendigo, this time he was beaten 14.7 lengths.

But the true believers remained and nothing was going to stop Royal Snack from chasing history at Moe. The build-up was massive as Garry Howe reported in The Express.

Royal Snack can carve his name into racing history by winning his fourth successive CUB Moe Cup (2050m) on Thursday.

The George Hanlon-trained stayer will join a select few horses to have won a major race four yyears running.

If Royal Snack does manage it, few will be as thrilled as Moe Racing Club life member Mick Johnson.

He had a big part in attracting the horse to Moe in the first place.

Johnson is a regular visitor to the Darwin Cup Carnival and it was there in 1993 that he bumped into Royal Snack’s owner Keith Robinson.

He remembers sharing a drink with Gary Marchmant from the Darnum Hotel, and Robinson poolside at the Travelodge in Darwin when the conversation got around to Royal Snack.

Johnson, never afraid to expound the virtues of the race club on his travels, seized on the opportunity and suggested the Moe Cup would be an ideal race for the horse.

By the time they had said their farewells in

Remarkably the wins have got better by the year.

In 1993, Royal Snack got up in the last stride after jockey Alf Matthews had ducked and weaved his way through the field from a near impossible position.

In the following two years, jockeys Patrick Payne and Brett Prebble increased the margin and the race was over halfway up the straight.

It was a similar story on Thursday, with Payne - back on board after refusing the mount last year - getting a dream inside run to establish a break rounding the turn.

On the line, Royal Snack (12-1) still had a length to spare over Sydney visitor Seto Bridge (33-1) with the locally-trained Past Master (25-1) one and three quarter lengths back third.

The crowd this year was the biggest since 1989, which can be attributed to the unexpected fine weather and interest generated by Royal Snack.

Winning jockey Payne was pleased to be back aboard the Moe Cup champion.

“I knew his form wasn’t as bad as it looked because he had been on wet tracks,” Payne said.

“And I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again.”

Payne became the first jockey to ride three Moe Cup winners, having partnered Ahora to victory as a young apprentice in 1992 and Royal Snack in 1994.

It was a fairytale result, but this would not prove final chapter of the Royal Snack story as the evergreen stayer’s career continued to race on.

A month after his Moe victory, Royal Snack won the Group 2 Sandown Cup (2400m) and headed back to Hong Kong for a third time.

NORMALLY there is plenty of water close by when Alex Vuillermin trains.

But due to the restrictions in place to stop the spread of coronavirus, the Morwell para-rower has been confined to dry land.

For the 20-year-old that has meant a return to the family farm and setting up her ergo (rowing machine), resulting in a change of backdrop from the Melbourne skyline to lush green paddocks.

“It has definitely been a nice change of scenery to train from home on the farm,” Vuillermin told The Express.

“I’m loving being back home with mum and dad.

“Normally I’m based in Melbourne as a full scholarship holder at the Victorian Institute of Sport, but we’ve all been sent to our home environments.”

“I’ve been training a lot on the ergo, as well as the watt bike and also doing road cycling, which ensures we’re keeping up our cardio and fitness.”

Vuillermin said the VIS has catered for all their athletes during this time of isolation.

“They have done so well catering for all their athletes and made sure we are all well equipped with a home gym and weights equipment,” she said.

“The coaches check in regularly with us, we have regular Zoom meetings, HR monitoring and testing.”

Despite the rare chance to spend more time in the Latrobe Valley as a result of COVID19, the pandemic has played havoc with what was looming

as a hectic 2020 campaign for Vuillermin.

“Last year our boat finished fourth at the World Rowing Championships in Linz,Austria and successfully qualified the PR3 four plus boat for the Tokyo Paralympics,” she said.

“Our 2020 selection trials were to be held in the first week of April and then we were going to set off for our international campaign three weeks after that where we would compete in the Gavirate International Regatta and World Cup.” Vuillermin praised the International Olympic Committee for the recent move to reschedule Tokyo until 2021.

“It’s the best decision they could have made, what it does is gives us another whole year to get better,” she said.

Rowing Australia is trying to ensure its national team members remain sharp during this time of uncertainty.

“Rowing Australia is running our interstate regatta online, so you get on your ergo and log your own kilometres onto the website,” she said.

Lenny lands boilover success HORSE RACING

MOE trainer Lenny Xuereb engineered a boilover that stunned punters when 250-1 pop Without Excuse broke her maiden status at Pakenham on Thursday night.

Without Excuse had been beaten 12.3 lengths first-up on April 2, but the addition of blinkers proved a decisive move.

The daughter of Delightful Choice jumped straight to the

front for jockey Carleen Hefel and was never headed, saluting by a length from Exact Replica in the Ultrasigns Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate (1400m).

Xuereb paid tribute to the apprentice jockey, saying her ride was pivotal in the surprise victory.

“Full credit to Carleen, she jumped the horse out and put her right on the bunny,” he told Racing.com.

“The blinkers have made a big diifference, she is just a horse who is so lazy.

“She didn’t put in at all last

start, so I decided to step her up and put the shades on.”

Xuereb was asked post-race whether he had a bet at the $251 odds.

“No, I’m not a betting man,” he said.

Xuereb’s other runner on the card, One For Rocky, finished last in a 1400m Benchmark 64 Handicap.

Fellow Moe trainer Peter Gelagotis saddled up three contenders, all of whom were unplaced, with the best effort coming from Oneforthebrothers, who ran fifth.

Snack ran second in the AUD$1 million Hong Kong Vase.

On returning home, Royal Snack’s form again went off the boil.

He was unplaced in 13 races ahead of yet another Moe odyssey.

Champion galloper Royal Snack can carve his way into Australian racing annals on Thursday afternoon by winning his fifth successive CUB Moe Cup. And there could be no better way for the club to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the big race than a Royal Snack win.

If he were to win again on Thursday, Royal Snack would become arguably the most successful country cups horse in Australian racing history.

Trainer George Hanlon, who has won the race a record seven times, had declared Royal Snack ‘cherry ripe’ for the race.

But sadly for the giant crowd, Royal Snack could not produce another Moe Miracle.

This is how Garry Howe captured the events in The Express on October 20, 1997 in a story headlined ‘Vita Man makes a meal of Snack’s record bid’.

The crowd came, but saw Royal Snack conquered.

They wore their hearts on their sleeves, their T-shirts, their lapels, anywhere they could be seen really.

The sentiment was clear.

Mick Johnson, self-declared president of the Royal Snack Fan Club, led the way with a badge proudly willing his favourite horse to ‘Go Snack Go’ in his quest for a fifth successive CUB Moe Cup. There was no doubt the evergreen nine-yearold was a favourite everywhere, except the betting ring.

That’s where the romance gave way to reality and suggested emerging New Zealand stayer Vita Man was the horse to beat, being sent out a warm 7-4 favourite.

Had Royal Snack won, he would have surpassed the feat of Puramaka in winning the Hamilton Cup four times in the 1970s.

But this year he was never in the race.

Jockey Rodney Griffiths had trouble finding cover from a wide barrier and was forced three-wide for most of the 2050m journey.

His mount found nothing in the run home and finished second last.

Trainer George Hanlon and owner Keith Robinson were disappointed.

Hanlon described the run as being “out of character” and Robinson gave the horse little hope at the winning post the first time around when he was wide and on the pace. “’He just wasn’t himself today, but he pulled up all right,” Hanlon said.

“He didn’t really settle at all.”

The future of Royal Snack, is still unclear.

What about another crack at his most favourite race as a 10-year-old?

“You never know, he might be back,” Hanlon said.

“That’s the great uncertainty that keeps us going.”

History would record that 1997 was Royal Snack’s final bow at Moe. He would later run third in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, but it was his final top performance.

By May 1998, Royal Snack had run his 98th and final race.

He won 15 races from 1200m up to 2400m and was minor placed 12 times, earning $867,098 in prizemoney.

Moe Racing Club named a race in his honour, the Royal Snack Plate, and his feats remain on display in the foyer of the Turfside Function Centre.
