Coronavirus concern results in great-grandfather’s release

A “RECKLESS” great-grandfather who shot his daughter in the forehead at close range will be freed after a Victorian judge said his age made him vulnerable to coronavirus in jail.

Rodney Madex, 69, shot his daughter Tammy, then 44, at his Glengarry North home in January 2019.

He had been drinking beer at the pub

and when he returned home, they drank alcohol together and got into minor disagreements.

“There’s only one big problem and it’s me. Get a gun and a bullet to fix it,” she had said.

Madex replied: “If you want it so bad, I’ll do it for you,” and fired a sawn-off rifle from one-to-two metres away, hitting the right side of her forehead.

His daughter needed surgery to

remove 30 pellets from her skull and suffers scarring and numbness.

Madex explained he wanted to scare his daughter and stop her self-harming.

Supreme Court Justice Rita Incerti described his actions as “extraordinarily reckless”.

“You had the capacity to kill your daughter with the slightest move of the gun,” she said on Thursday.

“It is remarkable Tammy did not

sustain a serious permanent injury or death.”

Afterwards, a distressed Madex contacted other family members, telling them he had shot Tammy and to call an ambulance.

The court heard the father-of-four had been dealing with unresolved grief from the death of his wife of over 40 years and drank more to cope.

Three-car collision Police Beat

with Gregor Mactaggart MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a multi car collision left a person with life threatening injuries in Traralgon on Saturday.

Police said the three-car nose to tail collision occurred at the intersection of Church and Grey Streets at 1.18pm.

The driver of a black Range Rover Evoque, a 59-year-old woman from Traralgon was taken to hospital with serious injuries while the front seat passenger, a 20-year-old man from Traralgon, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of a white Jeep Cherokee, a 61-year-old man from Traralgon was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

A 67-year-old woman from Traralgon, who was the only other occupant of the Jeep, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of a white Nissan Navara, a 23-year-old man from Traralgon, and his passenger, a 22-year-old woman from Traralgon were not injured.

POLICE are seeking information following a break-in at the St James Anglican Church in Traralgon.

A Panasonic television valued at $800 was stolen, and several rooms were ransacked overnight on March 20.

Tammy did not make a victim statement and has forgiven her father. Justice Incerti accepted Madex’s remorse, but lashed his disregard for the law given it was his second time in court for firearm offences.

Madex pleaded guilty to possessing an unregistered general category handgun and reckless conduct endangering life.

He has already spent more than 400 days in custody awaiting sentence and the judge said his age and risk of contracting coronavirus in jail were significant factors.

He was sentenced on Thursday to time already served and a two-year community corrections order so he can self isolate at his large rural property.

Paramedics issue call for public’s help on COVID-19

Youth Space goes virtual LATROBE Youth Space has temporarily closed its Mid Valley centre in response to the coronavirus pandemic and will offer young people online activities instead.

Manager Kylie Dubrich-McLoughlin made the announcement on Friday adding that a new online platform would be launched by the organisation today.

“The team is doing a brilliant job to create content to keep young people engaged and supported,” she said.

“We have even started private groups for our most vulnerable young people and are in constant phone (and) Zoom contact with them to make sure they are not feeling isolated and can call upon us as they need.”

LYS’ new online platform consists of a raft of video activities to keep young people busy such as footy tutorials, life skills, podcasting and car pool karaoke to name a few.

“This is very new territory for us so please be patient,” Ms Dubrich-McLoughlin said.

Latrobe Youth Space moved a number of its regular programs such as its young parents program to continue engaging young people.

“This is a precautionary measure and does not mean the patient has COVID-19. This is our standard procedure for all infectious diseases and it means our paramedics are doing the right thing and ensuring the community and our people remain safe.”

Victorian Ambulance Union secretary Danny Hill said people can thank paramedics for their work by simply staying home.

“Paramedics are out on the road saving lives every day,” he said.

“Now all Victorians have the chance to be a lifesaver by sitting down at home and putting their feet up.”

GIPPSLAND Emergency Relief Fund has announced the end of its bushfire appeal after raising a record $10.4 million.

“This is by far the biggest response we’ve ever seen to a GERF appeal,” GERF president John Mitchell said.

Mr Mitchell thanked everyone including those from overseas who responded to the appeal following the bushfires that ravaged East Gippsland during the festive period “The 2020 GERF appeal has received outstanding support within the region, all states and indeed from many countries from around the globe,” he told The Express.

“We’d like to sincerely thank all of the businesses, ethnic and community groups, organisations, families and individuals who have so generously given their time, money and extraordinary support to help our East Gippsland communities in their time of need.”

He said a decision to end the appeal was made after confirmation that property impact assessments had been completed by the East Gippsland Shire Council.

Of the $10.4 million raised, close to $9 million has been distributed to more than 2060 families or residents of East Gippsland.

Mr Mitchell said at least $1 million had also been allocated for fencing and fodder support to impacted farmers in the area.

He said GERF would continue to distribute the remaining funds in the coming weeks and expressed confidence that

everyone who had been impacted by the bushfires and referred to them had been supported.

“We’re confident that all affected residents who have been referred for GERF support and met the criteria have received emergency financial assistance,” Mr Mitchell said.

He said the huge response to the appeal enabled GERF to make supplementary payments of $17,500 to people whose principal place of residence was totally damaged during the bushfire.

Valley has five cases

FIVE cases of coronavirus have been identified in the Latrobe Valley.

The figure climbed from three on Friday to five at the weekend.

The quintet feature among the state’s total of 769 as of yesterday, an increase of 84 from Saturday.

Victoria has now recorded four deaths related to COVID-19, with one death recorded at the weekend, a man in his 80’s in a Melbourne hospital.

The total number of cases includes 419 men and 346 women, with people aged from 3 to 88.

There are 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

More than 39,000 Victorians have been tested to date.

Currently 26 people are in hospital, including four patients in intensive care, 193 people have recovered.

Of the total 769 cases, there have been 611 in metropolitan Melbourne and 139 in regional Victoria.

A number of cases remain under investigation.

The Department of Health and Human Services follows up and monitors all close contacts of confirmed cases and provides them with information and support.

All close contacts must self-isolate for 14 days.

All people arriving from any international destination must also self-isolate for 14 days following a direction of the federal government.

While most Victorians are

voluntarily complying with requests to quarantine and selfisolate, Police have strong powers to enforce the direction if it’s required.

Police can now issue on the spot fines for anyone who is not following the directions of the Chief Health Officer including up to $1652 for individuals and up to $9913 for businesses.

Under the State of Emergency people who don’t comply could also be taken to court and receive a fine of up to $20,000.

Companies face fines of up to $100,000.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said these are unprecedented times, stressing the threat of coronavirus to public health is real and everyone must take social distancing seriously.

“Everyone who’s unwell must isolate themselves and everyone who’s been told they’re in quarantine either as a returned traveller or close contact must do so,” Professor Sutton said.

“Social distancing will save lives. Everyone needs to comply with restrictions in place to keep yourself, your loved ones and the whole community safe.

“We urge everyone to stay 1.5 metres away from everyone else, wash your hands often with soap and water and cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow.”

Video consulting enhanced GIPPSLAND Primary Health Network (Gippsland PHN) has partnered with Healthdirect Australia to support general practices in Gippsland to deliver enhanced video consulting capability in a bid to help contain the rapid spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Healthdirect Video Call platform provides a single, consistent entry point on the health services’ webpage for all patients.

From here, patients enter an online waiting area for their appointment, reducing the need for administrative staff to generate a separate link, code or dial-in information for each patient.

Gippsland PHN staff have been trained to remotely assist general practices to connect with and use the Video Call platform in a coordinated approach.

Gippsland PHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch said this was one of the most significant changes we’ve seen in Australian general practice.

Previously, eligibility criteria for bulk-billed telehealth and video consultations have only included suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.

“Now that telephone and videoconferencing will be bulk billed for all patients from March 30, it is an important step in ensuring we continue providing

quality care so we can protect patients, general practices and their teams,” Ms Proposch said.

“Video conferencing is a critical component to ramp up capacity to combat coronavirus while keeping health care facilities safe and video conferencing is an effective alternative to in-person visits for patients with other health care needs, helping preserve critical provider capacity for those in greatest need of in-person care.”

Public gatherings now cut to just two people PRIME Minister Scott Morrison last night announced further restrictions in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Following a meeting with the National Cabinet on Sunday, federal and state governments have restricted public gatherings of people from 10 to two.

The states and territories, including Victoria, are deciding how to enforce the new rule.

The limit will not apply in households, employment or education, while skate parks

and public playgrounds will also be closed.

But Mr Morrison said parents and their children could go for a walk together even if there were more than two people.

The PM announced all people aged 70 and over should stay at home and self-isolate for their own protection. “They are not self-isolating for the purpose that people, but this is for their own protection to limit their interaction with others in the community,� he said. “They can go outside and be

accompanied by a support person for the purposes of getting fresh air and recreation but should limit contact with others as much as possible.�

People aged 60 years and over with chronic illness and indigenous people aged 50 or over should self-isolate as much as possible.

LATROBE City Council has suspended some of its services including domestic assistance which supports people with home cleaning in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mayor Dan Clancey said council suspended all activities that require physical contact and close proximity to people in a bid to protect their staff and members of the community from COVID-19. “We have suspended home cleaning services but not for vulnerable people,� Cr Clancey said, adding that elderly clients and people with disability would still receive this service. “We’re still doing what we can for the vulnerable members of our community.�

He said this service was stopped last week in keeping with the federal and state governments guidelines in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Cr Clancey added clients impacted had been contacted via phone and understood the reason behind the move. “If they are in a position where they are vulnerable they should give us a call,� he said.

Cr Clancey said council staff providing home cleaning have been transferred to other services such as its Meals on Wheels service where pre-cooked food is delivered to people’s homes. “We have a total of 101 staff working in community home care, 14 daily staff have been redeployed to other services like Meals on Wheels,� he said.

He added demands to deliver food to vulnerable people have significantly increased with clients normally receiving two

meals per week now requiring seven meals. “A number of clients have transferred to supported accommodation and we are assisting with that,� Cr Clancey told The Express.

Spreading kindness

THE Yinnar General Store is encouraging the community to “spread kindness and not the virus” with a range of initiatives to look out for the most vulnerable in trying times.

Yinnar General Store owner Merrin Dennis has ramped up a community swap and share pantry which now includes hard to get sanitary items such as toilet paper and tissues.

The shop is also donating care bags to those who can’t get out of the house and rolling out health protocols, such as installing a touch-free push door.

Ms Dennis said more than eight people had dropped off toilet paper donations during the past week after supermarket shortages began.

“The swap box began as an

unofficial thing for people to swap their extra veggies, now they are adding extra grocery items because of the shortages,” Ms Dennis said.

“We’ve been humbled at the amount of donations. It’s a trust system, this community is very trustworthy, we’ve had no problems with greediness as it’s such a lovely country town.”

Ms Dennis was also making up care bags including hygiene products and non-perishable goods out of the shop’s own supplies and donated goods for home delivery.

“We have a lot of elderly people in the community and I’m wary about them leaving the house.

We want to keep people safe, we want to look after them so we encourage them to give us a call,” Ms Dennis said.

“People have been really supportive and just this morning four people dropped off donations for the care packages.”

Ms Dennis said the general store was regarded as an essential service and remaining open, but was ensuring public safety through minimising cash handling and distancing from customers.

“Some customers are immunity suppressed, we’ve had a fair few customers wearing gloves,” she said.

“And we’ve had more trouble getting supplies we usually stock, such as flour, sugar, toilet paper and tissues.”

Ms Dennis said many of the other town businesses have had to modify their services such as offering takeaways or reducing operating hours.

THE annual Mother’s Day Classic is going virtual in repose to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event gathers people in more than 100 locations around Australia to run or walk four or eight kilometres to raise money for breast cancer research.

The Mother’s Day Classic Virtual 2020 will allow people to register online and receive access to the online

community while continuing to raise funds for breast cancer.

Ms Hoppner said there are many people who have lost someone to breast cancer and use the event as a way of honouring their loved ones.

“We know that many people use the event to raise money but also honour those they have lost and they may chose to do something special for their loved ones in a different way this year,” Ms Hoppner said.

Ms Hoppner said registration for the event is still open and people can purchase T-Shirts online, she said organisers will also find a way to send medallions to every participant.

A GLENGARRY winemaker has transferred his skills to create an innovative cider which is becoming a hit with Gippsland drinkers.

Narkoojee winemaker Axel Friend has teamed up with Glengarry publican David Barnes to create a not-too-sweet cider with more savoury and complex flavours than the usual offerings.

Mr Friend sources West Gippsland cider apples and uses a unique wild fermenting method with indigenous yeasts rather than commercially-added yeasts.

The maturing process then

takes place inside French oak barrels, instead of stainless steel tanks.

Mr Friend said the indigenous yeast meant the cider picked up the characteristics unique to the site it was sourced, and the barrels gave the drink an oak flavour.

Both Mr Friend and Mr Barnes believed they were the only people to be using this method in Victoria.

“It took a couple of batches to get it right. I wanted to make a cider that I would drink.We were surprised to see wider range of people enjoy it,” Mr Friend said.

“We wanted a more dry savoury cider than what was being offered on tap. It’s been

very popular, all sorts of people are drinking it who were not previously cider drinkers.”

Mr Barnes said the uptake of Glengarry Inn Cider was “snowballing” being distributed in about 10 pubs in Gippsland with more looking to jump on board.

“I’m a beer drinker and I love this cider. I haven’t heard one bad thing. This is about putting Glengarry on the map, to get more people in town,” Mr Barnes said.

“At the moment we are a small business so we are going along nice and slow as we don’t have a lot of outlay, but down the track we may be in the position to put it in cans or bottles.”

DOCTOR URGES US TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT CORONAVIRUS RISK Gippsland-based respiratory physician, Associate Professor Alistair Wright is advocating for a high degree of public vigilance to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

He has particular concern for the many patients he sees at LRH who have illnesses and diseases which make them vulnerable to infection.

“The Latrobe Valley has some of the highest incidence of respiratory disease in Australia, a combination of high smoking rates, dust and asbestos exposure. These leave people vulnerable to respiratory illness which we know is a comorbidity which contributes to bad outcomes,” Assoc Prof Wright said.

“I’d like to think everybody is being careful but if you’re older and you’ve got comorbidities, taking a greater approach to isolating yourself from coronavirus is reasonable. It’s very clear, this is a big deal.”

With the closure of non-essential businesses and services, the introduction of social distancing and widespread hand hygiene practices becoming the norm, it appears the coronavirus threat has become real for

the community. Concern has shifted from dwindling toilet paper supplies to a realisation there is a personal health risk.

Since the start of March, LRH’s COVID-19 management group has been developing strategies across the organisation to deal with a possible outbreak. It has meant changing the hospital’s ‘open door policy’, where the public has come and gone without restriction.

Measures restricting access to the hospital, the cancellation of some services and increased use of telehealth for outpatient appointments are as much about protecting the health of staff as patients, with workforce shortages expected to have an impact nationwide if COVID-19 takes hold.

“There’s a degree of anxiety and uncertainty and some terrible messages coming from overseas about healthcare workers, but LRH has got a good plan for personal protective equipment and we’re doing more training around keeping staff safe,” Assoc Prof Wright said.

“We are not going to turn away

patients - that’s just not going to happen, but there will be challenges, particularly with intensive care. We’ll manage it.”

Assoc Prof Wright echoes the key messages of Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Brendan Murphy and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton in reducing the spread of the disease - self isolation if feeling unwell, physical distancing and good hygiene practices.

“For every one person who gets infected with COVID-19, they pass it on to 2-3 people. So if someone with coronavirus affects three people, those three will affect nine and so it goes,” Assoc Prof Wright said.

“Be vigilant, wash your hands, don’t trust any surface or anything you touch. And stay away from your ‘T’ zone, your eyes, nose and mouth.”

Latrobe Regional Hospital has made a number of changes to its practices and services to reduce the coronavirus risk.

■ Restrictions on visitors as per Victorian Government emergency powers. Only two visitors will be allowed per patient per day for a total of two hours. Visiting hours strictly between 2pm-6pm.

■ No visitors under the age of 16. No visitors or support people for chemotherapy, dialysis and radiotherapy patients.

■ No visitors allowed in the Macalister aged care unit.

■ Partners or support persons allowed at births. Only partner or support person allowed during visiting hours for up to two hours.

■ Access to hospital reduced. Visitors must now enter via the new main entrance on Village Avenue, the Emergency Department or the old main entrance and will be screened and undergo a temperature check.

What is Coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious diseases.

Updated guidelines

• Groups of more than two people in public are discouraged.

• States are still deciding on whether to enforce the new rule, which is up from groups of 10.

• People aged over 70 or 60-plus with chronic illness are discouraged from leaving their homes unless essential for medical care.

• Still open: Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, public transport, some schools, hairdressers, petrol stations, postal and freight services, bottle shops, newsagents, retail shops. Restaurants restricted to take-away/ delivery in most states.

• Funerals are limited to no more than 10 people, but states can provide exemptions; weddings restricted to the couple, celebrant and two witnesses.

• All elective surgery in public facilities put on hold.

• All patients will be able to access Medicare-funded online consultations from next week.

• Testing extended to include anyone with a fever or acute respiratory infection who works in health care or aged care, lives in areas with an elevated risk of community transmission, or where there are two or more plausibly linked cases.

Ban on Australians travelling overseas

This will help avoid travellers returning to Australia with coronavirus and the risks of spreading coronavirus to other countries.

Exemptions will be managed by the Australian Border Force.

International travel

Travellers returning from any country outside Australia are now considered at risk of COVID-19.

All travellers arriving in Australia via air or seaports must undergo 14 days of isolation in the city of their arrival.

The Australian Government will provide accommodation for the quarantine period.

If your final destination is in a different state or territory, you must still complete your quaran-tine in the state or territory you arrived in, before returning home.

If you have returned from international travel in the last 14

days and begin to feel unwell and develop a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or respiratory illness, you should call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398 for advice.

If you feel unwell

How the infection is spread

COVID-19 spreads through close contact with an infected person; mostly face-to-face or within a household. It cannot jump across a room or be carried for long distances in the air so we should all go about our lives as normal.

Some activities to keep you all entertained during isolation WITH formal sporting activities cancelled and limited space and equipment at home, a Deakin University health behaviour expert has some solutions to help keep kids off screens and moving these school holidays.

Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN) Research Fellow Dr Lauren Arundell said that with many parents working from home alongside kids with energy to burn, there are still many ways to stay active, curtail boredom and avoid too much screen-time.

“There’s no doubt that this will be a challenging school holidays for families, with children stuck at home and many parents

Kicking goals with oval renovation

THE Heyfield Primary School oval is getting a makeover during the term one holidays.

Drought has created potholes and bare patches on the oval, making it a hazard for the students who usually enjoy the space.

The federal government last week said it would contribute $20,000 toward the $48,000 restoration project, so the school’s students can enjoy their oval once again.

Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the drought has taken its toll on the environment in unexpected ways.

“The surface of the oval at Heyfield Primary School is dry, hard and uneven. Children are hurting themselves when they fall over,” Mr Chester said.

“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to lend a hand and restore the oval so it is again a safe place where kids can run around, be active and have fun with their friends outside.”

Heyfield Primary School principal Velleda Bradford said he is pleased work on the oval has begun.

“The contractor has been on site already, so the school community is excited to see this project underway,” Mrs Bradford said.

“Our school often invites local sports clubs to run clinics for the students at our school, but we haven’t been able to hold the clinics due to the state of our oval.

“The students were the first ones to ask about restoring the oval and

very quickly our parents and teachers threw their support behind them.

“We started fundraising, but it would’ve taken a long time for us to raise the money needed to completely cover the cost by ourselves.”

The funding for the oval’s restoration was part of $200,000 in federal government grants allocated to Gippsland through the Local Schools Community Fund.

The fund provides grants between $1000 and $20,000 for small-scale projects.

Fifty-four schools in Gippsland applied for a total of $900,000.

Schools were able to apply for funding for projects including small scale extensions and refurbishments, computer and ICT equipment, playground and sporting equipment, landscaping, furniture, air-conditioning and measures to support student wellbeing.

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

Yarragon’s remarkable debut year

THE YEAR was 1977.

Malcolm Fraser was the Prime Minister, a box of Corn Flakes cost 55c and the Village Drive-In at Moe was doing a roaring trade.

Even Ugly Dave Gray performed shows in consecutive nights at the Golden Hill.

It was also the year the Mid Gippsland Football League welcomed Yarragon.

The club won a VCFL appeal to transfer to the MGFL following 16 seasons in the West Gippsland Football League.

Yarragon were no strangers to league changes, having been part of the Latrobe Valley Football League (1954-1960) and various guises of Central Gippsland football competitions.

Mick Henshall would guide Yarragon’s first season in the new competition.

In The Express on April 1, 1977, a story on the coaches in charge of their respective sides, including Mick Henshall at Yarragon, referenced the league newcomers.

Yarragon residents are very enthusiastic about their prospects in the MGFL and the club should prove an acquisition to the league.

Those words would prove prophetic six months later.

Yarragon opened their season against neighbours and former LVFL rivals Trafalgar.

The Bloods won the match 15.10 (100) to 11.17 (83), but the new boys earned a mention in the April 13 edition of The Express.

Played before a record crowd, Trafalgar defeated Yarragon who for three quarters looked every inch a finals prospect.

Yarragon will improve on this and their keenness to do well is commendable.

The first game out of the way has got rid of the initial nerves and if they can find a genuine ruckman, they could go places.

The gate was $426, described by Clem Pitt as ‘close to an MGFL home gate record’.

Express columnist Ruckman referred to Yarragon as the ‘Yarras’ as he heard Yarragon will be stopped officially from calling themselves the Magpies.

Yarragon would not have to wait long for a first win, defeating Boolarra in Round 2 by 75 points.

The Yarras proved that was no fluke by winning a tense struggle against Newborough by 12 points, 13.10 (88) to 10.16 (76).

Ruckman led his April 27 report with the result.

They’ve had plenty of headlines without doing too much to deserve any, but now they have finally earned a pat on the back.

Yarragon suffered a setback in Round 4, beaten to the tune of 61 points by Hazelwood-Churchill.

But a four-match unbeaten run, including narrow wins against Morwell East (eight points) and Yinnar (six points) saw the Yarras climb to third spot.

A bye in Round 9 was followed by a surprise seven-point loss to Hill End in a low-scoring struggle before wins against Maryvale, Morwell East and Thorpdale.

Trafalgar again proved Yarragon’s nemesis, with a 26-point loss leaving their record at 9-4, trailing Newborough and the Bloods on the ladder.

Yarragon won a tense struggle against Boolarra in Round 15 before a four-goal loss to Newborough left the new boys in a tricky spot.

Yarragon’s grip on third was now tenuous with 44 points as Maryvale (42) and Hazelwood-Churchill (40) closed in.

Three teams and two spots proved the equation in what was an extended home and away season.

Disaster struck when HazelwoodChurchill bounced to a 51-point win in Round 17, relegating Yarragon from third to fifth.

But with the campaign seemingly in freefall, Yarragon responded.

A gritty 19-point win against Mirboo North put the Yarras back in the four after Maryvale lost to Newborough by 88 points.

Wins against Yinnar, Hill End sealed finals football before Yarragon defeated Maryvale by nine points in a cracking Round 22 contest.

Newborough claimed the minor premiership on percentage after the Bulldogs and Trafalgar finished level on 76 points.

Hazelwood-Churchill shaded Yarragon on percentage for third, with both clubs locked on 64 points and fifth-placed Maryvale 10 points adrift.

Mid Gippsland had a final four at that time.

The sudden-death contest was played at Yinnar and there were no nerves for Yarragon, who burst out of the blocks, booting 8.2 to 1.2 in the opening term against a shellshocked Hazelwood-Churchill.

Greg Follett controlled the skies and Kevin Kilday starred as the Yarras scored their first finals success in 56 years with the 21.13 (139) to 9.15 (69) triumph.

Yarragon would book a spot with Trafalgar in the preliminary final T after Newborough defeated the af Bloods by 40 points in a highB scoring second semi-final, notable sc for a nine-goal haul from Peter fo Brummellen.

The former WGFL and LVFL club had not even won a semi-final since 1921 until beating HazelwoodChurchill in this year’s first semi-final.

Yarragon if he can break the 56-year premiership drought.

He is a first season coach, but has been well tutored by Warragul premiership coaches Graeme Gahan and Ken Robinson.

They had shown Gull spirit by giving Henshall a hand at training and also addressing players on tactics.

No one really gave Yarragon much chance of getting past the first semi on form.

They shocked critics by trouncing Hazelwood-Churchill and caused an even bigger surprise by eliminating Trafalgar last Saturday.

Can they complete a shock grand slam by toppling the favourites Newborough tomorrow?

It would be an amazing triumph for a first season club and a first season coach to land the MGFL pennant.

And not all the emotional interest is centred on Yarragon.

What of Newborough, three times runner-up and desperately keen for a change of luck?

Or can Kevin Fisher end a losing run that has almost driven the club ru to distraction?

My tip is Newborough, but Yarragon are firming rapidly.

Ya And his footnote was especially prescient - Yarragon beat Warragul pr in the 1921 grand final at Trafalgar.

Mid Gippy didn’t have someone singing the impossible dream at si their grand final on Saturday, but th the words would not have been out th of place.

For newcomers Yarragon, Saturday was the fulfilment of an impossible dream and for Newborough it was a nightmare.

The grand final was not quite up to the standard expected of thiss year’s top game, but enough excitement was generated to keep the customers happy and send them home with plenty to talk about.

First use of the wind gave the Yarras to get off to a good start and within seconds full-forward Brian Rankin had them seven points up.

Then stupidity emerged with three straight goals from ‘incidents’ that should never have happened and by the first change the Black and Whites had a 27-point lead.

Clearly, this was not a big lead, but the Yarras refused to be overawed.

The success of Robert Grima and Bill Kilday in defence was a double

blow for Newborough, keeping John bl Creighton and Peter Brummellen C scoreless but without them the rest sc of the forwards were like lost little sheep. sh The third term brought no respite as Yarragon kept on the pressure.

Coach Mick Henshall was named best, popping up everywhere to be get what Ruckman described as ‘a ge thousand kicks and wasted very few th of them’.

Grima and Kilday did everything asked of them, while Tom Johnston, Kevin Kilday, Jim Harvey, Jock Morrison, Cleversley, Laurie Wheller and Laurie Caldow (three goals) also impressed.

Bill Rilen, Chris Brown and Doc Rowlings were among Ruckman’s best for Newborough.

We’ll leave the final words with Clem Pitt, who shared the reaction to Yarragon capping a remarkable first year in the Mid Gippy with the flag.

Even now there are still a few sore heads as celebrations simmer after a great premiership win.

The Yarragon town really whooped it up after waiting 56 years for a senior pennant.

Beaten Newborough coach Kevin Fisher and many of his players sportingly joined in the celebrations at Yarragon.

Demand is so keen for tables at Yarragon’s premiership ball next Friday night that the venue has been switched from Darnum Hall to Trafalgar.

BOWLS Australia has cancelled this year’s Australian Open due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event, which was due to be held from June 13-26 on the Gold Coast, attracts a top-class field of bowlers from across the country.

GLENGARRY ace Al Jenkin secured his first LH Cox Medal as the Traralgon District Cricket Association’s champion player earlier this month.

Jenkin polled 13 votes in a low-scoring count to land the top gong.

The classy all-rounder edged out Imperials wicketkeeper-batsman Brett Chapman and Ex Students star Lee Stockdale by one vote.

Toongabbie paceman Keenan Hughes finished a further vote adrift in fourth spot.

Jenkin scored 439 runs at 39.9, highlighted by a magnificent 141 in the final game of the regular season against Imperials, a knock which sealed the prized individual accolade.

He also claimed 15 wickets at 14.0 in a supporting roles to the likes of Iraan Indika and Cam Graham.

The Magpies triumvirate featured in the TDCA team of the year.

Ex Students and Imperials also provided three players apiece.

Jackson McMahon, Stockdale and Jordan Gilmore were the trio selected from the premiers, while Chapman, Ryan Morley and Nat Campbell provided the three from Imperials.

Gormandale duo Chris Lehner and Adam Brady, and Rams powerhouse Hughes rounded out the 12-strong side.

McMahon collected the A Grade batting aggregate with Campbell the bowling aggregate.

Toongabbie young gun Zac Russell was named the rising star and also received the GCL player of the year gong.

Ex Students won the Bert Hill Club Championship.

Michael Petersen was named the Tom Anton Memorial best umpire and Neil Meredith was a popular inclusion as a TDCA life member.

Meredith enjoyed a stellar playing career, representing the TDCA six times at Country Week and was the competition’s top wickettaker on three occasions.

He has also made a significant contribution as an umpire.

Rovers won the Spirit of Cricket club award with Gormandale’s Fletcher White taking out the individual prize.

ROSEDALE trainer Sharon-Lee Chignell sealed a memorable success when William Rose scored a boilover victory in yesterday’s GRV Vic Bred Series Maiden Final (440m) at Sale.

In a driving finish to the rich feature, boasting a $7500 first-prize cheque, William Rose ($8.40) denied the well-supported Bad Guy ($3) by a head.

William Rose enjoyed a lovely run in transit from box three and poked up late to win in a time of 25.13 seconds.

The son of Fernando Bale is also owned by Chignell and lifted his prizemoney earnings past the $10,000 mark with the second win from six career starts.

Yesterday’s winning time was 0.05 slower than the effort William Rose produced to win his heat by a dominant eight-length margin seven days earlier.

He may have missed out in that final, but Pearcedale trainer Jason Thompson dominated the meeting with five winners - Wild Card,Taken, Razor Sharp. Black Opium and Zambora Smokey in the TRFM Grade 5 Final (440m).

Di Ciero excited about new move FOOTBALL GIPPSLAND LEAGUE

IF the Gippsland League football season begins, Sale supporters will be cheering for recruit Luke Di Ciero, after the former Warragul and Traralgon player made the move to join the Magpies for 2020.

After playing at the Gulls with older brother Ash in 2018, Di Ciero said a disappointing 2019, where Warragul claimed the wooden-spoon, opened up the door for a potential move.

“It was pretty disheartening not to go as far as we wanted to last season with a massive pre-season at Warragul with the boys,” he said.

“I saw the experience here and they (Sale) wanted to give me an opportunity and I was really taken aback by that.”

Australian Open called off

THERE was little to write home about for the Latrobe Valley trainers during yesterday’s meeting at Sale.

Peter Gelagotis proved the leading light on a lean day with Herman’s Bells running fourth in a Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m).

Herman’s Bells, a four-year-old son of Master of Design, was beaten nearly five lengths by the impressive Sagarra.

Sagarra ($4.00) signalled better things lay in store for him, romping home to win the $35,000 race by three and a half lengths.

Deyama was unable to repeat her last start heroics, running 10th in the Gippsland Veterinary Hospital Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m), restricted to the fillies and mares.

The step up in class proved too much for the last-start maiden winner, beaten 5.1 lengths

by Button Express.

Final Stryke, prepared by Catherine Martindale, was beaten 12.1 lengths on his debut by American Flyer in the Anderson Removals Maffra Maiden Plate (1200m).

Lenny Xuereb’s Memphis Squaw finished second-last behind Taberna in the Maryvale Sand Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m).

Caulfield trainer Clinton McDonald combined with jockey Jake Noonan to win the feature $50,000 Maffra Cup (1400m) with Honey Esprit.

Honey Esprit ($11) held off Bricktop by a length to seal her fifth win from 22 starts.
