THE best friend of missing Newborough man Jarrad Lovison has issued an impassioned plea for information to help find his “brother by oath”, three weeks since he was last seen.

Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad are investigating Mr Lovison’s disappearance after Victoria Police announced yesterday it was being treated as suspicious.

The 37-year-old, who cuts in imposing figure at seven feet tall, was last seen just after 9.45pm on April 15 riding his green mountain bike along March Street, Newborough.

at Kmart and Woolworths in Moe, and then met with a friend on Belvedere Court, Newborough.

Adam Reddiex, who lived with Mr Lovison in Traralgon before moving to the Sunshine Coast, said his disappearance was “completely out of character”.

“Jarrad has always been the same, and if there’s something wrong with him I know straight away,” Mr Reddiex told The Express.

“I catch up with him every time I come down, and I was down late last year and he was just going about his business and trying to keep his nose clean.

AMONG the sea of flowers and greeting cards surrounding May O’Reilly on the weekend was a framed letter from Her Majesty The Queen.

Royalty in her own right, the Traralgon resident raised the bat on Sunday to mark her 100th birthday and was celebrated in a fashion befitting a true queen.

Born in 1920 in the Queensland town of Gympie, May grew up as one of 10 children before meeting husband Gordon and moving to the Latrobe Valley in 1946.

The couple had four children of their own, including daughter Ges Hammer, who lives with May and had the pleasure of enjoying the special, albeit slightly unorthodox, birthday with her mum. “I woke her up with 100 kisses from me and everyone else that wasn’t able to kiss and hug her,� Ms Hammer said.

A sports fanatic, May took great pride in raising the bat to mark ark rk her own remarkable century on n Sunday.

The newly-minted centenarian attributes her longevity to prayer and faith in God, as well a healthy intake of fruit and veg, abstinence from alcohol and the love of her “many grandchildren and great grandchildren�. “She lives by the belief she hasn’t done anything spectacular in her life but I feel that the person she is, she’s just so kind and generous and takes it one day at a time and takes the good with the bad,� Ms Hammer said. “Her caring and gentle nature endears her to all that meet her and her good humour is cherished. “She’s just so gorgeous and supportive and excited for anything her kids or grand kids do. “I said to her ‘what’s the highlights of your life?’ and she said looking after my two sons, her grandchildren.�

Motion denied, but issue remains

LATROBE City councillors were not willing to second a notice of motion to ban Nazi symbols on council property after the issue was raised at Monday’s ordinary council meeting.

Councillor Dale Harriman is calling to ban the “symbol of hatred� after he was contacted by a “distraught� local family who saw a Nazi flag being displayed in a car. “This upset them, they said they tried to contact the authorities but they were told nothing could be done as it’s not a banned flag even though it’s a form of vilification,� Cr Harriman said. “This person was fairly distraught and I thought

others would be too, as this is something that would be offensive to a large section of the community.�

Cr Harriman put forward a notice of motion to prohibit displaying Nazi flags and symbols on council-owned land and buildings.

It also included writing to the Victorian premier and prime minister to ban the “production, use and display of Nazi flags and symbols�.

Cr Harriman said that although his motion had lapsed at council, he would raise the issue himself with state and federal MPs. “Nazi symbols represent an evil and oppressive regime that worked on hatred,� Cr Harriman said.

“I fully support freedom of speech but there comes a point where one person’s freedom of speech cannot be at the expense of others.�

Council issued a statement that it had no records of any reports of anti-Semitic material displayed in the municipality.

Mayor Dan Clancey took to Twitter to state “to be clear, council is opposed to any display of anti-Semitic material, it is offensive and disgustingly vile�. “The councillor’s notice of motion was not in line with the powers or role of council, hence it lapsed.

The proper approach to address this serious issue will now follow,� Cr Clancey tweeted.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said she was “appalled� by idea of Nazi material on display and urged people to contact police if they felt threatened or were at risk of harm. “The most effective way to tackle this sort of idiotic behaviour is to make sure police are notified as a matter of urgency and complaints are lodged,�

Ms Shing said.

Ms Shing said displaying Nazi material may constitute hate speech or racial or religious vilification which could also be raised with the state and federal human rights and anti-discrimination commissions.

Mr Lovison’s dog, a black Labrador name Slade, was left at his residence, prompting friends and family to raise concerns over his whereabouts. “Slade is his best friend and companion and he walked him every day and did everything with that dog, he didn’t go anywhere without him,� Mr Reddiex said. “But Slade’s been running away because Jarrad hasn’t been there to take him on his walks, and he’s just so proud of him.�

Police yesterday released several images of Mr Lovison, including one of him in a beanie that he sent to friends on the night he disappeared, and one of his bike which is yet to be recovered.

He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured top and pants, as well as dark runners with red socks. “Every little bit of detail, even the smallest thing, even if people think it’s far-fetched, we need to hear it because it could fit in with the timeline and could help us find him,� Mr Reddiex said. “He’s a great bloke, he’s my best mate and he’s just so easy to get along with. “I just want everyone to keep putting their heads together, we need to find him.�

Mr Lovison is described as being 213cm tall with a slim build and has a shaved head.

Coronavirus measures mean many florists have had to close their doors, with many trading solely online.

Restriction of commercial flights due to the virus also means that the number of imported flowers has decreased during this busy time.

Victoria Farmers Federation vice president Emma Germano said the drop in imported flowers has been dramatic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victorians would be shocked to learn that 40 per cent of the flowers we usually buy are imported from as far away as Ecuador, Kenya and Singapore, Colombia. Of course, COVID-19 has changed all that and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a bad thing as local florists are stocked with local flowers,â&#x20AC;?

Latrobe Youth Space gets state government funding

LOCAL young people are being supported with $4.3 million in state government funding to design, develop and run the Latrobe Youth Space in Morwell.

Minister for Youth Ros Spence announced earlier this week that Warragul-based company Kubale Constructions had been appointed as the head contractor to redevelop the youth space facility, generating up to 50 onsite jobs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The new Latrobe Youth Space is designed by young people, for young people. This space will provide young people across the Valley with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive,â&#x20AC;?

Ms Spence said.

The project will kick-off in the next month, and is being delivered in partnership with the Latrobe Valley Authority to support the engagement of local contractors.

Latrobe Youth Space manager Kylie DubrichMcLoughlin said this was positive news for the team of young co-designers who selected the space at a former car yard at 497 Princes Drive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were really excited, to see this happening is wonderful. Now the builder has been appointed, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full steam ahead,â&#x20AC;? Ms Dubrich-McLoughlin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think young people are now feeling like they have been listened to and are getting what they asked for.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Dubrich-McLoughlin said builders would begin extending the mezzanine level, installing a lift, a new kitchen, unisex toilets and spaces including a young parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The young people had been consulting with architects from day one, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been picking the colours and the furniture. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve already begun planning, this is all youth-led to get the features they want,â&#x20AC;? she told The Express.

The new â&#x20AC;&#x153;safe and inclusiveâ&#x20AC;? space will allow them to run more programs which are guided by a youth governance committee made up of 14 young people aged 12 to 25.

In the past year, it has connected with more than 12,000 young Gippslanders.

Latrobe Youth Space had been operating in an interim shopfront at Mid Valley while waiting for the go ahead for the new larger site, but had now shifted online due to COVID-19 rules.

Ms Dubrich-McLoughlin said they hoped to move into the new facility in about six months, but in the meantime were adapting their programs to online platforms.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been having many engagements with young people, and catching more people feeling isolated who would not normally come into Mid Valley,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the Gippsland community has provided â&#x20AC;&#x153;invaluable supportâ&#x20AC;? to Latrobe Youth Space. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Appointing a local contractor to this project means the local community - and the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy - will be supported in return,â&#x20AC;? Planned outages ENERGYAUSTRALIA is going ahead with planned outages at Jeeralang and Yallourn power stations and is rolling out additional hygiene measures amid COVID-19 restrictions.

The company issued a statement saying that more than 1100 temperature checks were undertaken at both the Yallourn and Jeeralang sites last week.

A 70-day planned outage at Yallourn unit one is being scheduled for early July with an additional 700 casual workers and contractors to be brought on site. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Work is slowly ramping up, with scaffolding currently being installed,â&#x20AC;? the company said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have ordered additional temperature testing containers, and these will be installed at the Yallourn Power Station entry points.â&#x20AC;?

Hygiene precautions include temporary lifts and alternative tool and material arrangements.

It is constructing additional brew rooms and putting in floor markings to help with social distancing, as well as rolling out a â&#x20AC;&#x153;rigorousâ&#x20AC;? cleaning regime.

Yallourn is also starting a trial of remote video witnessing of access permits.

Thermal temperature checking containers have been installed at the Yallourn mine to check each workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s temperature as they enter.

Planned maintenance at Jeeralang was brought forward to start in mid-March â&#x20AC;&#x153;to make the most of expert contractors being available in Australiaâ&#x20AC;?, and is expected to finish in June.

Jeeralang health and safety measures include split shifts for operational employees and added tea rooms to ensure safe distancing at breaks.

Additional cleaning services, knee-operated wash basins and voluntary temperature measuring devices have been installed around site.

The outage, which began in mid-March, is involving pulling apart the 54 megawatt A4 gas turbine and inspecting, cleaning and replacing major components.

Australian Manufacturing Workersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Union organiser Steve Dodd said union officials had been discussing coronavirus precautions with the company on a weekly basis and he was satisfied EnergyAustraliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s measures were â&#x20AC;&#x153;in lineâ&#x20AC;? with union negotiations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have some more questions about how many workers they are bringing in from interstate, as we want to see them bring in minimal people,â&#x20AC;? Valley’s cases steady at seven THE Latrobe Valley remains steady on seven positive coronavirus cases detected across the region.

The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 1440 – an increase of 17 since Tuesday.

To date, 18 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

The total number of cases is made up of 760 men and 680 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 145 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

Currently eight people are in hospital, including six patients in intensive care. 1321 people have recovered.

Of the total 1440 cases, there have been 1182 in metropolitan Melbourne and 219 in regional Victoria.

More than 162,000 tests have been completed with many more samples still being processed as part of Victoria’s testing blitz.

The new confirmed cases include four new cases of COVID-19 at a Melbourne meat processing facility, taking the total number of cases in this cluster to 49.

“Today’s increase in cases illustrates once again that while we have been flattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

“Victorians have done a remarkable job so far sticking to the coronavirus restrictions and staying at home has saved lives. But now is not the time for complacency. Up to 100,000 Victorians will be tested for coronavirus during these two weeks as part of a major testing blitz across the state.

“People with common symptoms of coronavirus including fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell – however mild – are encouraged to get tested.”

There are only four reasons for Victorians to leave their home: food and supplies, medical care and care giving, exercise, and work or education.

Trafalgar’s Fat Tinkerbell a new internet sensation

THE notion is that our bins now go out more than we do.

During this unprecedented time of social isolation, bin night is now one of the biggest events on the weekly calendar.

Something which started as a dare between two friends in Queensland has now sparked a global movement.

And so a Facebook group, Bin Isolation Outing, was spawned and has attracted more than one million members.

Trafalgar resident Dale Gannan couldn’t wait to get involved.

Wife Catherine filmed Mr Gannan taking the bins out dressed as a character he has dubbed Fat Tinkerbell, which has attracted about 20,000 views on social media.

“I had this fat Tinkerbell suit from my wife’s 40th birthday,” Mr Gannan said.

“When I saw the (Facebook) page I said ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do something, I’ve to get involved’, so I chose to dress up as fat Tinkerbell, aka Frank, taking the bins out.

“It’s all just for fun, it’s something out of the ordinary. It put a smile on my face so I thought, why not? I can do this and make someone else smile.

“It’s nothing more than saying ‘here guys, have a laugh at this idiot.”

It’s not Mr Gannan’s first social media cameo.

The musician appeared in the recent Mass Online Band performing INXS’ Never Tear Us Apart, but it’s his work as Fat Tinkerbell, or Frank, that has garnered the most attention.

“It’s funny how this has taken on more publicity than my music,” he said.

“You can’t go out and have a laugh with someone so, take the bin out and have a laugh at yourself,” Mr Gannan said.

Two people who were initially less impressed by Fat Tinkerbell’s weekly outings were his daughters, Monique and Alyce.

E-book is a helping hand for youngsters ADAPTING to a new normal at least temporarily - presents challenges for everybody.

Visual artist Jade Amalos noticed seven-year-old daughter Sienna was, like a whole generation of children, experiencing a lot of fear and anxiety due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Amalos approached author and early childhood educator Kate McCulley-Watson and the pair collaborated to create an e-book for Sienna.

Forty-eight hours after their first conversation, the digital book Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Walk Your Cat, and Other Advice For a Worried Kid was born.

Once finished, they felt their story could benefit a wider range of children experiencing similar feelings and empower them with practical strategies to help regulate their emotions.

As an early education teacher, Ms McCulley-Watson believes visuals are often the best medium to communicate to an anxious child, or adult, in times of high stress. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was the hope of Jade and I to create a book that would provide practical tools and concrete strategies for families to use with their children during these unprecedented times,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope that it can act as an important conversation starter for families and can also equip and empower children now with skills and strategies they need to more successfully handle anxiety and stress throughout their life.

New childcare centre will be built in Morwell

Spiders weave a web of mystery

LATROBE City Council has given the nod for a new 53-place childcare centre in Morwell to be built on Winifred Street.

The application was passed by councillors at Latrobe Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s May meeting with 25 conditions, after it received six objections raising concerns about traffic, car parking, and amenity.

The childcare centre will operate on a former church site between 6.30am and 6.30pm from Monday to Friday and provide eight full-time and two part-time jobs.

The original plans included places for 59 children and 12 staff but was reduced to cater for parking in response to objectorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; concerns.

Neighbouring resident David De Pellegrini addressed the council meeting via a phone hook-up expressing concerns for the development to go ahead.

Mr Di Pellegrini pointed out there were already three childcare centres with â&#x20AC;&#x153;adequate vacanciesâ&#x20AC;? operating within 400 metres of the proposed centre, as well as â&#x20AC;&#x153;numerous moreâ&#x20AC;? in nearby towns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is already a quiet neighbourhood and our people wish to keep it a quiet neighbourhood. I feel I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think this is appropriate for this area, or this part of town,â&#x20AC;? Mr De Pellegrini said.

Project proponent Brian Hwang spoke on behalf of the developer and said the application was in line with local and state planning criteria, close to public transport, the Morwell central business district and primary schools. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe this proposal is beneficial for the local community and economy, this childcare centre will provide early childhood education services to the area so that children can be nurture and educated wile parents are working,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hwang said.

Councillor Alan McFarlane said the application â&#x20AC;&#x153;stacked upâ&#x20AC;? against the planning scheme, with conditions included to satisfy amenity, landscaping, transport and infrastructure concerns.

However, Cr Graeme Middlemiss said he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;not comfortableâ&#x20AC;? with the location, despite the fact that it met all planning requirements.

STRANGE spider webs floating around and blanketing fields across the Latrobe Valley in the last few days have left the community puzzled.

Museum Victoria senior curator of entomology Doctor Ken Walker confirmed the webs were not an early Halloween decoration but a rare natural phenomenon.

Dr Walker said the spooky sight was known as The Gossamer Effect which only occurs when a few key factors fall into place.

Gossamer is an especially fine silk which spiders weave to help lift them off a surface. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spiders have two ways that they catch food; there are those that make a web (which are called) web builders, and those that roam for food, called vagrant hunters that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make webs,â&#x20AC;? Dr Walker told The Express.

Dr Walker said that web builders stay in one place and when they have babies the spiderlings use a technique called ballooning to find their own place to hunt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To achieve this ballooning the spiderlings stick their bum into the air and release a silk that floats in the air, and they release enough of it so that a draft of breeze will lift their bodies,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What has happened in Gippsland is that you need a solid air mass to pick up these spiderlings, but now and again the air mass takes them along and dumps them all down in the same spot and long threads of web get laid over all the vegetation.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Walker said Money Spiders in Gippsland breed in April and have many spiderlings because of their low survival rate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gossamer Effect happens when there is a combination of breeding cycle, ballooning and weather pattern. It is quite spectacular because what you are really seeing is the water droplets from dew sitting on the web, which you can not usually see,â&#x20AC;? Dr Walker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The effect needs tens of thousands to millions of spider to produce this amount of silk, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like laying a silk blanket on a field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have personally never seen it in real life but it is an event in nature that when you see it you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget.â&#x20AC;?

Tax relief measures for businesses announced THE state government has announced it will provide a further $491 million in tax relief to help support businesses and save jobs through the coronavirus crisis.

A host of fees, charges and levies will be frozen in a bid to reduce the financial burden on households while businesses participating in the Job Keeper scheme in Victoria will be exempt from payroll tax and WorkCover premiums on payments to staff who have been stood down.

This means the $1500 fortnightly payment for staff will be free from all state government taxes and charges.

Treasurer Tim Pallas made the announcement on Tuesday and said it would mean more money in the pockets of businesses, and more incentive to keep workers on throughout the crisis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These changes will help businesses, save jobs and reduce the burden on households hit hard by coronavirus,â&#x20AC;? Mr Pallas said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is money in the pocket of Victorian businesses doing it tough. We know these restrictions have been incredibly difficult - but staying apart has been essential in slowing spread of the virus and saving lives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The last thing Victorian businesses and families need right now is higher fees and fines. These changes will make sure weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supporting Victorians to get through to the other side of this crisis.â&#x20AC;?

Payments above a part-time employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usual salary, due to JobKeeper being a minimum $1500 fortnightly payment, will also be exempt from payroll tax and the WorkCover premium.

The government will also freeze all fees and fines that were due to be increased in July, including car registration, traffic infringements, court-imposed penalties and permit fees.

The Fire Services Property Levy paid by all Victorian households will also be frozen at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection level.

The government has already announced it will defer the planned Landfill Levy increase due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes on top of the $1.7 billion economic survival and jobs package, including tax refunds, grants for businesses in the hardest hit sectors and opportunities for affected workers to find new jobs.

Along with the rest of the community the club is concerned about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the safety and health of club members, visitors and the Victorian community.

The club and its members are following the advice of health experts, the state government and Bushwalking Victoria.

Club members have still kept busy with preparations for FedWalks2020, planned for November, as far as we are able and have participated in meetings over the internet, and shared information via email.

Some members are working on the publication of a guide book to McMillan’s Walking Track, and the club is keeping their Facebook page up to date with relevant posts.

Some members have dug out maps and books and planed future ventures and sorted photos from walks from the past.

Individually, lots of club members have been participating in walking in their local area for exercise.

The club is looking forward to resuming and enjoying club bushwalking when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Australia’s past front of mind for students

THIS year’s Grade 6 Urban Camp was full of hands-on experiences for students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, where they learnt about different cultures and Australia’s past.

They investigated artefacts at the Immigration Museum that were brought to Australia by immigrants and discussed why and when these people had come to Australia.

A Jade burial suit and Chinese dragon were particularly fascinating at China Town and the Chinese Museum, which students visited to learn about the Chinese culture.

To learn about our country’s own Indigenous culture, at the Melbourne Museum the students studied the variety of languages spoken by Aboriginal people, the meaning of a real Possum cloak and also looked at an eel trap and traditional weapons.

The students learnt about the hard life of

prisoners in Australia’s early days at the Old Melbourne Gaol where they saw death masks of people who were hanged.

They also looked at how prisoners were kept in solitary confinement with nothing to read except the bible.

In memory of those who fought for our country, the students also learnt about the symbolism and meaning of the Shrine of Remembrance.

Other activities included a challenging inflatable obstacle course and high diving boards at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre; a visit to Polly Woodside; making bags out of old T-shirts; and watching a play performed by Two Friends Productions during their Urban Camp.

The Urban Camp enabled the students to experience new things and consider different perspectives and will now give them reference points for this year’s curriculum topics.

A new horizon for the Latrobe Valley

CHRIS Barfoot has lived his whole life in the Valley, and loves it here.

He is dedicated to the Valley’s future, which he believes could be every bit as prosperous as its past 100 years, continuing its role as a source of baseload power, although he does not think this will be from the burning of coal.

Chris sees the future to be in generating electricity from our abundant resources of renewable energy, and feeding power into the national grid through existing transmission facilities.

With views like this, it’s a short step to becoming immersed in Australia’s toxic debate about the future of coal, but Chris will have none of it.

He sees no value in getting into a shouting match with supporters of continued coal burning.

He understands their position; coal has served us well for 100 years.

A far better approach, he thinks, is to explain, and if possible demonstrate, the benefits of turning to renewable energy, Chris believes there are a great many.

If you can show people that in taking this direction, there will be comparable jobs, and continued prosperity, they will be far more likely to listen, perhaps to buy in.

So who is Chris Barfoot, and why should we listen to him?

Chris was born in Morwell in 1959, attending St Vincent’s Primary School and then St Paul’s in Traralgon.

He completed a Bachelor of Applied Science at Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education in Churchill, then commenced his working life at the SECV, where he would remain for 33 years.

Starting as an electrical trade assistant at Morwell Briquette and Power, he rose through the ranks to senior management, involved in many roles, over an impressive variety of disciplines, at Yallourn W, Loy Yang A, Hazelwood and headquarters in Morwell.

These roles included being part of the team commissioning Unit 2 at Loy Yang A, programming and monitoring outages at Yallourn W, building project management systems for stations, mines and workshops (while at Morwell headquarters), a ten-year stint in the Morwell mine, with roles in geology, fire services, innovation, automation, and computer modelling.

While at the Morwell mine, he completed a Master of Engineering Science via Monash in the field of

robotics. In 2000, he moved into Hazelwood Power Station where he was station chemist for 10 years.

In 2010, still at Hazelwood, he moved to Works Management, again scheduling outages, then Asset Management optimising stores systems and analysing maintenance strategies.

In his last few years with the power industry, he had become increasingly uneasy about the long term viability of burning coal for power.

He could see that the world was moving away from this practice, and he started to think deeply about how this would affect the Valley, and what could be done to prevent a social disaster when our power stations, inevitably, closed.

Then life intervened.

In March 2017, with only six months forewarning, his place of employment, the Hazelwood Power Station, was closed.

For Chris Barfoot, the timing was exquisite.

Without any personal input whatever, he was suddenly unfettered from an ageing power industry in which he had ever diminishing confidence - he was free!

He could set aside his misgivings about coal burning, and immerse himself totally in his vision for the future of his beloved Valley, which, he believed, was in renewable energy.

But where to start? While mulling this over, he completed a six-month Certificate in cabinet making at Yallourn TAFE then took up a board position with the Gippsland Climate Change Network.

In late 2017, to his delight, he was appointed to the position of Project Officer with the Latrobe Valley Community Power Hub. His brain teemed with endless dreams for the Valley, and with a spring in his step, at the age of 58, he launched himself into a whole new career.

connect a further 3500 megawatts to the grid from the Valley. As other stations close this will increase.

Many projects, large and small, are planned.

Some are in construction, and some completed and in operation.

Easily the largest is Australia’s first off shore wind project, the Star Of The South, currently in the feasibility stage, consisting of wind turbines in Bass Strait, which would feed power into the grid through the Valley.

It could provide up to 18 per cent of Victoria’s power, enough to supply 1.2 million homes, also tap into the Valley’s industrial workforce, creating many jobs for locals during construction and ongoing operation.

The grid connection is a strong attracter, and other proposals

include the Hazelwood Solar Farm (70 megawatt), Toongabbie Solar Farm (70 megawatt), Gippsland Energy Park (500 megawatt), Delburn Wind Farm (200 megawatt), and many others.

There are possibilities for a substantial horticulture industry using waste heat from power generation-a pumped hydro scheme using the Thomson Dam, feeding power to the grid via Yallourn W. Currently under construction in Traralgon are the Gippsland Aquatic Centre and Performing Arts Centre.

For the cost of a small pump and connecting pipe, both these facilities will be heated by hot aquifers which lie underneath the thick blanket of coal.

This geothermal resource has never been exploited for such purpose, and the Latrobe City Council must take some credit for leadership in this project. Imagine the savings in heating costs!

Located in Victoria’s remote high country, Licola Wilderness Village has become the first Victorian town to go completely off grid with solar energy.

Bought by the Lions Clubs of Victoria and Southern New South Wales in 1969, it is a small town whose primary activity is a recreational camping village for disadvantaged students.

The cost of diesel power, at $135,000 per year, was threatening the sustainability of the project, so the Lions Club decided to go solar.

Six hundred solar panels were installed, backed by two 37 tonne batteries. An Australian designed invertor converts the power to 240 volts, which supplies the whole town. The diesel generators remain in place for backup over winter and periods of low sunlight.

The massive savings (about 90%) have been put into heating and cooling for all buildings, and other improvements to the Village.

The money invested in going solar will be paid off in seven years, and the future of Licola looks very good.

So these are just some of the things that are happening with renewable energy in Gippsland right now, and when I think about it all, it is easy to see why Chris Barfoot is so excited about his job.

His joy is twofold. He is delving into an area of science underused in Australia, and constantly discovering new ways in which it can be applied, and he is doing it all for the benefit of the Valley, which is his home and has been so good to him.

Dogs in parks

DURING walks through local parks and tracks I have found increasing amounts of dog droppings, obviously left by dogs of irresponsible owners.

Worse still is that many dogs are not on a leash and are left to approach people like myself who do not want their attention. “He doesn’t bite” is not good enough.

With the increased number of people now using the parks (Moe Botanical Gardens, Rail Trail) it would be good to have the local by-laws officers patrol these areas.

A few fines might work!

The coronavirus pandemic may have brought this country to its knees, economically and socially speaking, but we will not go hungry.

A significant blessing in these difficult times.

Onshore gas will not bring great benefits

THE state government’s economic rationale for lifting the moratorium on onshore gas extraction is disingenuous, and it raises serious doubts about its commitment to addressing climate change and the setting of meaningful greenhouse emissions reduction targets.

Its claim that onshore gas extraction would result in significant job creation is fanciful.

Historically, the number of Victorian jobs in oil and gas extraction has been every low.

The 2016 census data shows that the total number of jobs in oil and gas extraction combined was 1773, or only 0.06 per cent of the Victorian workforce.

In the south-west of Victoria (Warrnambool, Glenelg and Colac-Corangamite), the number of jobs was only 74.

Moreover, the Victorian Gas Program Progress Report No.4, which the state government relies upon, supports the view that job numbers in gas extraction will likely remain low, even if the exploration and extraction proceed.

The report’s most optimistic scenario is the creation of a mere 242 jobs across Victoria.

The state government claims that onshore gas extraction would boost energy supply and secure local gas supply for Victorians, are seriously misleading.

The report estimates that conventional onshore gas extraction may yield between 128 and 830 petajoules of energy in total.

Yet in 2018, Victorian consumption of gas was 220 petajoules.

Even under the most optimistic extraction scenario considered by the report, it would only supply Victoria’s total needs for about three years at best.

According to the report, onshore extraction would only meet between nine per cent and 14.8 per cent of Victoria’s gas demand for a relatively short period.

The state government’s official announcement on the lifting of the onshore gas moratorium does not

mention any potential lowering of gas prices.

This is because the gas program progress report does not expect onshore extraction to relieve gas prices.

The report states ‘’no material impact is expected on Victorian gas prices regardless of the timeframe or level of development’’.

As the threats from climate change and fossil fuel derived from greenhouse gases become ever more evident, the challenge for genuinely progressive governments is to ensure a more rapid shift to renewable capacity, and away from fossil fuels altogether, including gas.

Victorians look for and deserve more honesty from government on crucial matters that impact directly on their collective response to the threat of climate change.

Where’s the sense in bans?

VICTORIA’S blanket bans on solo recreational activities have never made sense.

While we can get out for a socially distant walk along the river with a friend or to play basketball outdoors, solo pursuits like fishing, hunting, golf, prospecting and horse riding are off the menu.

It’s particularly frustrating when you consider other states have never put similar bans in place.

So it should go without saying that lifting bans on solo recreational activities must be part of any move to relax COVID-19 restrictions later this week.

I’m not advocating for people to travel long distances. This is about local people getting out in their local community.

Despite claiming to be from the country, Daniel Andrews just doesn’t seem to understand that getting out in the great outdoors is more than a hobby for country people - it’s in our DNA. We are all prepared to do our bit to stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, but it’s ridiculous to stop a person from fishing off a beach, lake, river or jetty if they are lucky enough to live close by.

It makes no sense that our beaches are open to surfers as long as social distancing rules are followed, but horse riding and golfing are a strict no-no.

Likewise for hunting or prospecting, where many undertake their activity solo or in pairs.

These forms of exercise or recreation are more than a hobby, they’re a way of life for many regional Victorians and a key reason we live where we do.

They’re also a critical outlet that helps to build good mental health and physical wellbeing.

At this time of long isolation, this has never been so important.

Everyone in our community has made big changes in their lives to make sure we protect each other.

It’s kept the number of positive cases recorded in regional communities very low.

We’ve put in the hard yards and it’s saved lives.

While it is critically important we keep up the work to comply with rules on gatherings and social distancing, on May 11, blanket bans on solo recreational activities must be wound back to allow local people to get out in our local area.

It’s common sense.

It’s also hard when you’re not working from home, and you are the parent of other kids. This whole thing is hard. I’d rather, however, to be at home with my kids, getting a mediocre education from me, than have more people getting COVID19. Would you say the same during war times when the risk was a bomb? In the scheme of things this is a short period in our lives. Our children have years to learn.

AFL clubs are aiming towards a return to training on May 18.

The best-case scenario hinges on the outcome of tomorrow’s National Cabinet meeting where all states and territories are expected to ease restrictions and allow training in groups of up to 10.

Already Western Australia and South Australia government rules allow that, however clubs in those states are awaiting the League-wide tick of approval before they’re allowed to train in more than pairs.

Victoria’s state of emergency is in place until Monday, May 11, but there is growing optimism within league circles that the state of emergency will be lifted and a move to training in groups of 10 will soon follow.

Players are set to require a minimum of three weeks training before a return to play which has been pencilled in for midway through June.

The AFL played one round of the 2020 season in front of no crowds back in March before the coronavirus restrictions forced a postponement of play.

Henry reflects on a lifetime running REMEMBER WHEN TRARALGON HARRIERS

FIFTY years ago a photograph in the Traralgon Journal showed the start of the 1970 Traralgon Marathon, the third running since it began in 1968.

The photograph of the runners in Franklin Street just beyond the Crown Hotel shows world champion Derek Clayton, and in front of him is a young lad with long hair wearing the number 10 singlet - teenager Garry Henry.

This story is about him.

Seeking to publicise the event in its third year, the Traralgon Harriers invited Clayton to compete.

Clayton responded, “Thanks for your invitation to run at Traralgon in June.

At this stage I am very interested in running - but would like to stress as purely a training run. Obviously as I am in full training for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games a race over 26 miles is much easier than a lone training run”.

The club was succesful in using Clayton’s presence to gain publicity.

The Traralgon Journal had a four page feature including notes on the runners and a map of the course to guide spectators, with the main heading: “Marathon champion to race here”.

It continued: “Australian marathon champion and currently the fastest marathon runner in the world, Derek Clayton, will be in Traralgon on Saturday for the annual Traralgon Marathon”.

A separate header proclaimed, “Local runners will be in at the finish”

with biographies of the runners.

A Commonwealth Games athlete and dual Olympian, Clayton ran a 2:8:33.6 marathon time in Belgium the previous year, the fastest time ever recorded, which stood for almost 12 years.

At Traralgon, Clayton won in 2:13:40, 20 minutes ahead of second placed Laurence Wells, and still holds the race record for the Traralgon Marathon.

Richard Jeffery was the first local runner home in fifth place, with a time of 2:35:02.6 - faster than 11 of the winning times of later years.

The same year Richard was selected in the team to represent Victoria in the Australian Marathon Championships, where he ran his personal best time of 2:28:38.

Close behind Richard Jeffery was Harrier teenager John Bermingham who went on to win the following year, still in his teens.

And the young boy in the photograph, Harriers prodigy Garry Henry, aged 15, was eighth home in 2:48:12.7.

But this was not his first marathon.

Garry, when only 13, had completed the 1968 Victorian Marathon Championship at Werribee, a few weeks after the inaugural Traralgon Marathon.

It was a sign of things to come.

Garry began his running career with the Traralgon Amateur Athletics Club as an 11-year-old in the mid-60s.

In a later interview with Neil MacDonald he said: “At school I did athletics with kids that I knew. Then, when I went to tech school a group of us heard about a trip to Melbourne for the Victorian School Boys Cross

Country Championships. That sounded pretty good, so off we went. I was able to win the Under-14 title at those championships and from then on, I just fell in love with running.”

“However, as I started to have a bit of success I started to run just about every day after school.”

Representing the Traralgon Technical School in 1971 he showed his versatility by winning the interschool cross-country event and later in the year the inter-school 1500 metres championship.

He said watching Ron Clarke race against Kip Keino really inspired him.

Garry knew Rod Hill, a legendary local runner from Morwell, who studied and competed in America in the 1970s.

In 1976, he followed Hill’s example and moved to America on a sports scholarship, completing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education at Pembroke University in North Carolina while competing in athletics at college level.

Returning from America, Garry was again trained by Harriers coach Martin Thompson.

He competed against Robert de Castella, Chris Wardlaw, Gerard Barrett, Bill Scott and Dave Chettle in the 1980 Olympic marathon selection trial.

All were sub 2:12 marathoners, or were soon to be.

As coach, Pat Clohessy explained in de Castella’s book On Running, “It was a terribly hard race with five good runners fighting desperately for three Games places”.

Barrett won, with de Castella and Wardlaw pushing Garry into fourth place, and out of Olympic selection.

Also finishing third in the 10,000 metres Olympic trial, Garry learned

only two runners would be sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, de Castella ran 2.14:31 to finish a commendable 10th in the 1980 Olympic marathon, the best Australian result.

A few months later Garry competed in the 1980 Fukuoka marathon in Japan.

He finished fourth, ahead of the first four Olympic place winners, with Robert de Castella a further 35 seconds back in eighth place.

His time of 2:10:09 was the second fastest Australian marathon time ever, behind Derek Clayton’s world best of 2:08:33.

In 1980, he was regarded by many as Australia’s best distance runner with a number of outstanding performances that culminated in his fantastic run at the Fukuoka Marathon.

In 1984, he was one of the favourites to win the Olympic Marathon Trial in Adelaide but chronic bursitus in his heel ruled him out.

Garry continued his association with the Harriers until the mid-80s, winning the Australian cross-country title in Perth in 1984.

In early 1985 he competed in the selection trial for the Australian team for the World Cross Country Championship in Portugal.

Steve Moneghetti overtook him early in the run but Garry caught him near the line to finish third behind Robert de Castella and qualify ahead of Moneghetti.

This began a long friendship between Garry and Steve that saw them train and travel the world together for many years.

Garry was part of the support team when Moneghetti won the 1990 Berlin Marathon - the first after the fall of

the Berlin Wall - and also at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Garry did long runs with Mona in the lead up to the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada where Mona won the marathon in 2:11:49.

Garry represented Australia in three Australian World Cross-Country Teams, in Portugal, Switzerland and France.

Still running in 1994, Garry won the ‘B’ division of the prestigious Zatopek 10,000 in a time that would have placed him third in the ‘A’ division against Australia’s top middle distance runners.

1996 saw another prestigious marathon - this time in Greece. Garry won the Olympic Centenary Marathon in Athens, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd of 30,000 as he crossed the finish line in the Panatheneam, the original Olympic stadium.

Given the honour of representing Australia in the marathon, during the re-enactment of the first modern Olympic Games, Garry, then in his early 40s, ran a time of 2. 24:06 in cold rainy weather.

Garry ‘s fellow Victorian Pat Scammell won a silver medal in the 1500 metres, and Queenslander Anthony Ryan also won silver in the 400 metres sprint, echoing the achievements of Edwin Flack who won Australia’s first Olympic medals in the 800 and 1500 metre events at the 1896 Athens Games.

Garry explained: “At the time I was just running about an hour a day with (elite performance coach) Nic Bideau when we heard about the centenary marathon to commemorate the marathon at the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens. Anyway, the organisers were looking for a representative from each of the countries that competed from 1896.

Nic suggested that I should have a go. So I increased my training a little and did a few longer runs with Steve Moneghetti. I wasn’t really sure how I would go but Mona said he thought I could run about 2 hours 25 minutes. I ended up winning in 2 hours 25:46 so Mona was a pretty good judge! I was presented with a replica of the bronze medal given to the winners at the first Olympics and had a laurel wreath placed on my head, so that was pretty special!”

When visiting family and friends in the Valley, Garry has taken part in Harrier events.

At the 2017 Run For the Kids event in Melbourne when a competitor told the race director Steve Moneghetti that he was from the Traralgon Harriers, Steve’s response was, “Do you know Garry Henry? He is a great friend of mine.”

And when Derek Clayton set off in the Traralgon Marathon 50 years ago, little did he realise that the tiny teenager in front of him would threaten his own world fastest time a mere decade later.

Pathway focus of project

Following in her footsteps: Belinda Snell made the journey from Mirboo North to the Opals.

THE Latrobe Valley could have more basketball stars playing at the highest level with the creation on the Gippsland Basketball Participation and Elite Pathways Planning Project.

The strategic plan is a collaboration between the Basketball Victoria and the Latrobe Valley Authority, and plans to examine the current structure and programs that are delivered across Gippsland.

The project is being led by a Project Steering Group which includes representatives from the LVA, Basketball Victoria, local government, Sport and Recreation Victoria and local basketball associations.

The Gippsland community can have their say in the project with surveys for members, family, coaches, referees and basketball associations live on the project’s web page.

Basketball Victoria development officer for the greater South-East area Jodie Harlow said the response to the project had been impressive.

“We have only just sent out surveys

for the project and in the first couple of hours we received between 500 and 600 responses,” Harlow said.

“It is quite a varied group that we are trying to get in touch with... current and past players and coaches from Latrobe City Energy, coaches, referees and parents.

“We are very keen to hear from people that have been involved with Latrobe City Energy.”

Harlow said the project is will conclude with recommendations in August.

“It will be a six-month project, but over those six months a lot of work going into the project, coronavirus has change the way that the consultation will be going out to the community - it is all online or over the phone which has been a bit of a benefit for us being able to reach more people,” she said.

“The project in general is about developing a sustainable pathway for athletes in the region in previous years Latrobe City Energy has been that pathway and we are trying to establish the best pathway for athletes.”

Harlow said Gippsland is an

area where elite players often find themselves moving to metro areas to achieve their goals in sport, with Opals ace Belinda Snell a fine example of just that.

Snell, who grew up in Mirboo North, travelled from a young age to play in Melbourne and progressed to represent her country with distinction, winning three Olympic medals with the Opals.

“The Latrobe Valley Authority identifies that there is a need to develop this pathway and in a sense improve the regions ability to participate tat a higher level,” she said.

“Ultimately the outcome is a solid participation for the region and that we have support for in from the community.”

Steering Group member and Basketball Victoria Country general manager David Huxtable, called for community feedback to assist with the growth of the project.

“We would love to see a broad response to the surveys being distributed to our basketball community,” he said.

ON the opening round of 1982, Gormandale kicked a record score in the North Gippsland FL when they booted 40.15 (Rick Cowell 16 goals) to defeat RAAF 4.8.

Three weeks later they beat their own record with 47.20 against Newry 4.2. Rick Cowell kicked another 16 goals.

They kicked 11 goals in the first quarter, 12 in the second, 15 in the third and finally 19 in the

final quarter to finish with 57.20 to Southside nil. Robin Archbold kicked 23 goals in the huge score.

IN an Under-14 match in 1998, Police Boys racked up a huge score of 40.26 against GlenPark (a combination of Cumberland Park and Glengarry) in the Traralgon DJFL.

HEYFIELD’S BIG TIME SCORE ON May 4, 2002 Heyfield recorded their biggest haul with 46.15 against Gormandale’s 2.6.

Brett Szabo scored 14 goals in the big goal tally.

They beat their previous best of 43.16 against Nambrok in the Nth Gippsland FL in 1998 (July 25) with Brett Szabo kicking 14 goals.

Heyfield kicked a record 21.5 in the final quarter.

RAPID FIRE GOALS FOR TEDAS IN 1984, TEDAS (Traralgon Junior FL) kicked an amazing score in the Under-14s when they scored 41.10 to City Juniors 0.1.

They scored a goal every 64.5 seconds.

Southside did much better two weeks later when they kicked 42.27 with Mick Kennedy scoring a record 23 goals.

TEDAS KICK 50 GOALS IN an Under-14 match from 1978, TEDAS (Traralgon Junior FL) kicked 50.14 to Cumberland Park 0.0 which was a goal every 1.6 minutes to Tedas.

Gary Edwards finished with 18 goals for TEDAS.

FINAL TIME FOR THE OLD BOARD IN 2016, Morwell East finally after 43 years with their old scoreboard finally ditched the manually operated board for a new electronic state of the art board.

RECORD SCORE FOR THE EAST IN 1980, Morwell East registered the MGFL’s highest score of 47.36 playing against Mirboo North.

But the club had 48 goalkickers and the scoreboard registered 48 goals, although the official goal umpires had them kicking only 47 goals.

Jim Rasmussen kicked 14 and Danny O’Donnell 11 for the East.

Yinnar are the only team in the MGFL to kick 50 goals but their points tally was lower than Morwell East.

HORSE RACING

MOE trainer Peter Gelagotis is in for a hectic few days with runners across the state.

Gelagotis saddles up two key hopes at Werribee today in Moss ‘n’ Bolt and Pembroke Isle.

Moss ‘n’ Bolt, a full-brother to Group class galloper Moss ‘n’ Dale, also trained by the Gelagotis stable, contests the Tobin Brothers Benchmark 64 Handicap (2020m).

Despite not hitting the heights of his more illustrious brother, Moss ‘n’ Bolt has been competitive at metropolitan level as his second to Inverloch in a Benchmark 84 event at Sandown in July 2019 attests, while Pembroke Isle tackles a Benchmark 64 assignment at 1610m.

The stable has two runners at Cranbourne on Friday night (Oneforthebrothers and Filotimo) before three contenders at Caulfield on Saturday.

The exciting Nudge Bar lines up in the Neds Benchmark 84 Handicap (1800m) and reunites with apprentice jockey Thomas Stockdale as he chases a third win in four starts.

Earlier in the program, Call It A Day contests the Bill Collins Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) named in honour of the legendary racecaller, who grew up in Trafalgar and Moe before going on to call 34 Melbourne Cups.

Former Hong Kong sprinter Music Addition is the other runner for the stable and takes on fellow Moe galloper Vainstream in the Lamaro’s Hotel South Melbourne Open Handicap (1100m).

Vainstream, trained by John Pascoe, is coming off a lucrative last-start win in the VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m).
