LVA funding is extended past June 30

LOCAL members of parliament are awaiting more details on the state government’s decision to extend the Latrobe Valley Authority’s funding beyond June 30 as part of COVID-19 recovery measures.

The state government passed $24.5 billion in emergency funding last week to help the state recover from the pandemic, which included pushing major economic decisons back to October.

LVA funding was due to expire at the end of this financial year, but the government confirmed it would continue to be funded beyond June 30 through the global budget for the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, with Karen Cain continuing on as chief executive.

However, Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said there remained uncertainty about how the LVA would operate in the meantime, and what its future would look like beyond the October budget.

THE “strongest weather system of the year� has enveloped the Latrobe Valley this week and the Bureau of Meteorology has warned the worst is still to come.

Heavy rainfall, strong winds and frost were just the start of a “real blast of winter� sweeping the state.

An unseasonal cold snap is set to grip the Valley tomorrow with the mercury tipped to top just 10 degrees. “We’re going to see temperatures

plummeting throughout (today) across Victoria with those winds turning south-westerly,� Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron told The Express. “We’re looking at snow falls developing around 800 metres elevation by late (today) ... local hail and thunder will affect most districts as well. “Temperatures (will be) well below average for this time of year and that wind chill will be significant with what

feels like temperatures in single-figures for much of Victoria.�

The wintry weather is being prompted by a deep low pressure system which formed near Tasmania and moved east. “That pressure system will drive those cold south-westerly winds over southeastern Australia, not just through Thursday and Friday but into the weekend as well, so we’ll see showers continuing, especially over southern districts,� Mr Efron said.

Snow fall is also forecast over alpine areas of the state, including at Mount Baw Baw, with some autumnal reprieve not due until next week. “It’s not until Saturday or Sunday that we see those winds easing, the showers really backing off as well and then into next week those showers really disappearing from much of Victoria with some lighter winds likely as well,� Mr Efron said.

There’s no place like home

There was trepidation and excitement,� Ms Van Den Berg said.

Ms Van Den Berg said most passengers were wearing masks and flight attendants were in personal protection gear, with a health officer checking on them before they could disembark in Melbourne. “It was great to hear the Border Force officials say g’day in Aussie accents, they were really genuinely compassionate and so welcoming,� she said. “Everything was so efficient.

We were given a care pack with chocolate and biscuits and put on a bus to our hotel with an escort, we felt very special.�

Ms Van Den Berg said she felt safe in her “nice big hotel room� in the city where they were being “incredibly well looked after� and a nurse checking in on them daily.

Ms Van Den Berg was one of this year’s Boolarra Australia Day citizens of the year recipient for her volunteer work helping livestock in bushfires.

The equestrian coach said she is returning home with limited capacity to work and has to re-pay debts accrued from unexpected costs of accommodation in lockdown and pricey flights home.

Her niece had set up a GoFundMe page which had so far raised more than $3000 from family, friends and the equestrian community to help cover some of the sisters’ costs. “I feel so indebted and appreciative to these people. I’m looking forward to some quiet time at home, this will be a quiet time for me,� she said.

BUDGEREE woman Kelly Van Den Berg is relieved to be back in Australia as she is part way through a 14-day quarantine in a Melbourne hotel after catching a mercy flight out of Morocco.

Ms Van Den Berg and her sister Tracy Lewis are home after being stuck in a Moroccan apartment for 34 days, unable to fly out when the country went into COVID-19 lockdowns. “We are just so relieved, I’ve never been so happy to be back in Australia. It’s a surreal situation to be in, we feel lucky as we could’ve been in a worse situation,� Ms Van Den Berg told The Express. “The support from family and friends has been overwhelming, there was that uncertainty and the fear of not knowing how long we could be stuck in Morocco for.�

The sisters embarked for their overseas trip in February, but were caught out when borders suddenly closed in March and had since been pleading for a mercy flight out.

They managed to get a fully booked chartered flight out of Morocco to London with 36 Aussies which was organised by the UK government, and then jumped on a plane back to Melbourne.

Ms Van Den Berg had prebooked the commercial flight out of London and said she was watching tickets go up by $400 every hour.

She said said the embassy picked them up from their apartment in Morocco to take them to the airport with a special escort to take them through roadblocked towns in lockdown. “I woke up that morning with food poisoning, so it was not a pleasant trip. I had to hide it as I thought they might not let me on the plane,� she said.

A state government spokeswoman said the government would “continue to work with our partners and the community�. “Our immediate focus is on supporting workers, businesses and industries through to the other side of this global pandemic,� she said.

“This is something simple that we can all do to help stop the spread and beat this virus. It’s the quickest way that governments can safely lift some of the more extreme social distancing rules, some of which are disproportionately impacting regional people.

“We are all in this together, so let’s use every tool available, including technology, to fight this virus and speed up our return to normal life.”

Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, said COVIDSafe was an important tool in streamlining the process of identifying contacts after a person tested positive for coronavirus.

“Finding out quickly means you can quarantine yourself or be treated much faster, protecting your family and friends from possible infection, and slowing the spread of the virus,” Professor Murphy said.

“Without this technology, health officials have to rely on people being able to remember who they have been around, and being able to provide contact details for those people.

“COVIDSafe only keeps contact information for 21 days.This covers the maximum incubation period for the virus and the time it takes for someone to be tested for COVID-19.”

The release of the app comes as the Latrobe Valley’s number of coronavirus cases remains steady at seven.

The total number of cases across Victoria as of last night was 1354.

THE federal government released the COVIDSafe app on Sunday evening in a bid to trace the spread of coronavirus through bluetooth technology.

Within 12 hours of its launch the app was downloaded more than one million times.

The app is designed to quickly contact people who may have been exposed to coronavirus.

COVIDSafe logs the time, date, distance and location that you have been in contact with another person who has downloaded the app.

The app will then contact you if any of the users you have been in contact with test positive for coronavirus.

The app is not mandatory to download, but the federal government is encouraging as many people as possible to download COVIDSafe.

Local MP Darren Chester encourages as many people in Gippsland as possible to download the app to their phones.

Mr Chester said social distancing measures could be eased sooner if enough people have the app.

“The app will help health workers to more quickly identify people who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with coronavirus, including people they don’t know, and notify them of their possible exposure,” Mr Chester said.

“If you can more quickly identify the close contacts of patients, we can more quickly stop the virus from further spreading in the community, while also improving the prognosis for patients who are then able to seek treatment sooner.

A PINT-sized pony who was seized by RSPCA officers and adopted out to her new home is now bringing joy into the lives of senior citizens at Andrews House in Trafalgar.

Taffy, the miniature ponycross-shetland, is not even waist high to the average adult, standing at just seven hands.

Her owner, enrolled aged care nurse Ed Bennett, was looking for a therapy horse to take to work and picked up the sevenyear-old mare from the RSPCA’s Pearcedale centre in a “grossly overweight” condition.

“Her colour stood out with her blonde mane and tail, and she was not as big as a Shetland.

She had a very good nature and I thought she would adapt quite well to being a therapy horse,” Mr Bennett said.

“I had seen ponies going into nursing homes or hospices visiting sick or elderly people, or those in palliative care, and it makes the day of the residents.”

Mr Bennett said “everyone” at Andrews House has fallen in love with Taffy, particularly at a time when families are unable to visit their loved ones during COVID-19 lockdowns.

He even found tiny pony boots so her hooves won’t slip in the floor, made up her own identity lanyard, and carries a bag around in case she leaves some fertiliser behind.

THE first of six respiratory assessment clinics planned for Gippsland to help fight illnesses such as coronavirus has today opened in Warragul.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said more clinics would open in Sale, Morwell, Bairnsdale, Foster and Wonthaggi.

The Gippsland Primary Health Network has worked with general practices to find suitable locations.

“These clinics will provide those suffering mild to moderate respiratory symptoms a place to be assessed and receive treatment advice,” Mr Chester said.

“Patients will be able to be tested for respiratory conditions, such as coronavirus, influenza and pneumonia.

“They may then be referred to another medical facility for treatment, or advised to self-isolate at home.”

Mr Chester said the clinics would complement services available at hospitals and local GP practices, helping to ease the pressure on these services and strengthening the fight against coronavirus.

The six clinics planned for Gippsland are among 100 federally-funded respiratory clinics to open across Australia.

The Latrobe Valley has recorded 311.4mm of rainfall for the year to 3.30pm on April 29, compared to 73.6mm for the same time last year.

“We’ve seen quite heavy rainfall already across the state so far this month, it has been a very wet start to the year across much of Victoria,” Mr Efron said.

“This rainfall over the next few days could actually trigger some riverine

flooding, so be aware of any flood watches and flood warnings that will be issued over the coming days.

“As you get into central Victoria and Gippsland, there are falls of 15 to 35 millimetres expected on Friday.

“Tuesday (was) the last mild day we’ll see across the state for some time.”

NATIONALS Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has slammed the state government’s decision to keep schools closed, saying students must be allowed to return to class.

Ms Bath said since other states had re-opened schools that Victoria should follow suit.

She also accused Daniel Andrews is digging in his heels and said the Premier was ignoring the advice of Australia’s leading medical experts.

“Too many families are feeling the pressure of having to simultaneously work and manage remote learning with their children,” Ms Bath said.

“As a former maths and science secondary school teacher my greatest concern is with those students in years 10, 11 and 12.

“These senior students are the ones whose education is at significant risk if they do not get back into the classroom.”

Ms Bath has written to Education Minister James Merlino seeking details of what, if any, modelling has been conducted on dropout rates during COVID-19.

“Our teachers and students are working tremendously hard to make remote learning work, however studying from home does not replicate the individualised support available in a classroom,” she said.

“Even the best technology cannot substitute face-to-face education and many students are struggling in an online learning environment.

“The experts are telling us our schools are safe.With the right health safeguards students must be able to return to school.”

“The notion that just because some people in Canberra say so that we can just flick a switch and all the schools will be open, I just don’t think that would happen,” Mr Andrews said.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the country needs consistency regarding coronavirus restrictions.

“I firmly believe that the National Cabinet and the Chief Health Officers at a state and territory level should be in sync,” Mr Northe told The Express.

“I do not think the anomalies that are occurring state by state are doing any benefit and especially around school I think you need consistency around the country.”

Do as you should do with doggy doo doo WITH the changes thrust upon us due to COVID-19, everyone in the Latrobe Valley has had to adapt, and it appears our community has adapted well.

Despite the difficult times we face, there are some positives to come from our current situation. It is pleasing to see so many people getting daily exercise, commonly by walking with their dog.

However, it is evident that not all people walking their dogs are picking up after their dog.

I have never seen so much dog faeces around public spaces in Traralgon; and I assume the situation is similar in other towns within the Latrobe Valley.

Not only is it unpleasant for other users of public spaces when dog faeces is present; it also presents a public health threat.

Dog faeces potentially contains pathogens that cause illness in humans and other animals. In this time where we rightfully make sacrifices for the health of the broader community, let’s not forget the important basic requirements to maintain a healthy society.

Please ensure you have enough bags with you to collect all your dog’s waste, and enjoy your exercise.

Guide Dogs Australia are saying an extra-special thanks to our wonderful Guide Dogs for the life changing work they continue to do amid unprecedented global challenges.

Guide Dog Day was created to celebrate the important role Guide Dogs play in helping people with low vision or blindness lead safe and independent lives, and this year it takes on a new meaning.

It’s clear that the comfort and companionship a Guide Dog provides has never been more essential for, or cherished

by Guide Dog handlers.

The coronavirus pandemic has understandably presented challenges to us as an organisation, but the welfare of Guide Dog clients and our dogs is at the heart of everything we

do and every decision we make, so we’ve simply had to find ways to overcome these challenges.

This has meant supporting clients through phone calls, video conferences, email and social media, while our trainers have been busy setting up obstacle courses at our campuses, or training dogs from home, so they can continue getting our Guide Dogs-in-training ready to change lives.

It’s not been easy, but we’ve made it work, and for that I extend a heartfelt thank you to all Guide Dogs team members and volunteers.

Recent weeks have also been a chance to dig into the community spirit we’ve been building into our organisation over more than 60 years, so I want to thank everyone who has extended their

Right on time, they played the Last Post, followed shortly after by Reveille.

The volume on my radio was not loud enough to reach all the people standing with their candles up and down our street, but those close enough were able to hear.

I glanced up our street and estimate that at least half the houses had people standing in honour to the fallen with their candles in front of them, a testament to the effect of this new form of recognition. Well done Gippsland FM, and well done to our community.

In many ways, this was a more significant ceremony than the traditional one.

Dangerous goods law review is an opportunity for greater openness

THE state opposition welcomes moves to review Victoria’s Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and associated regulations as it is an opportunity to improve openness and transparency.

Chemical fires in 2018 and 2019 harmed the health and safety of Victorian residents and our environment, and showed that Victoria’s dangerous goods laws were not up to the task of protecting the community.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade describe illegal stockpiles as ‘ticking time bombs’, and the lack of disclosure about these has caused many residents to lose confidence in WorkSafe and other government authorities.

The opposition believe the public have a right to know where illegal stockpiles have been located by authorities and what they’ve done about it. We want the review of dangerous goods laws to lead to more public reporting on illegal stockpiles

that government authorities have found, how many inspections have been carried out, and where dangerous goods have been disposed of.

This way, the public can start to regain confidence that government authorities are getting on top of these issues.

Residents shouldn’t be left in the dark about ‘ticking time bombs’ in their community.

Showing their true colours

TRARALGON mother and son Bernadine and Rob Timmers added a personal touch to their Anzac Day service at the weekend.

Ms Timmers, 83, displayed her artistic skill by colouring in a wreath which was printed by The Express in conjunction with Latrobe City Council last week.

Ms Timmers said Anzac Day has always held a special place in her heart.

“Rob is an ex-Sergeant and our big family usually always gets together to pay our respects on Anzac Day,” Ms Timmers said.

“This year was a little bit different but we stood in the driveway with candles and played The Last Post at dawn.”

Ms Timmers said she heard about the wreath through her local seniors group.

“We usually meet once a week, but that is not possible anymore, so one of the members came to my house and dropped the page off for us to display in the window on Anzac Day,” she said.

“I have always been quite crafty, I enjoy a lot of creative things so I thought it would be a good idea to colour in the page.”

Ms Timmers said despite this year’s unique ceremony she is looking forward to a return to normal in 2021.

AS with all Anzac Day services,Yallourn North had to put celebrations on hold for the town’s 25th Anniversary of the Memorial Rock.

With the help of the Latrobe City Council and Kings Electrical, the town has two new flag poles which enables both the Australian flag and the New Zealand flag to be flown.

Two of the Yallourn North Action Group committee members Warren Xerri and Linda Hall kept their social distancing and conducted a much shortened service.

Warren laid a wreath on behalf of the Latrobe City Council and Linda laid a wreath on behalf of the Yallourn North community.

AS Anzac Day fell on a Saturday during a time of isolation, Churchill’s Lumen Christi Primary School asked students to create an Anzac tribute at home as part of their visual arts program.

The children were given the option to create something that they could use on Anzac Day, to show their respects to those who have served the nation.

Some students made posters, cards and pictures, but brothers Nate and Max decided to take it to the next level and make a cross, with a bit of help from mum Tania.

They made a cross with scraps of wood around the house, the brothers then made poppies and put them in the front garden, ready for the 6am tribute.

Grade 3 student Max enjoyed putting together the tribute.

“It was so much fun making the cross with mum and my brother,” he said.

Prep student Nate declared he would be up at 6am to remember ‘our war heroes’.

Brothers Billy and Blake made wreaths at home with their mum Janelle and little brother Tom. They used egg cartons for the poppies.

Trafalgar High students normally attend services in person at RSLs and cenotaphs across the region.

In the lead-up to Anzac Day, school captains maintained those visits during their local exercise, while Trafalgar High arranged wreaths to be laid at cenotaphs in Thorpdale, Yarragon and Trafalgar.

Musicians grace a digital stage

A NEW Latrobe City initiative is encouraging local artists to showcase their talents to the world.

The initiative titled Tunes and Takeout consists of a 30 minute live performance broadcasted on the Visit Latrobe City Facebook page.

It has grown in popularity with performers and music fans with live acts put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Traralgon musician Eleisha Foulkes was among those who jumped on board after the Latrobe City events team contacted her.

“A friend works in the events team at Latrobe City, she approached me through my music page on Facebook and asked if I would play live on a Friday night via Facebook Live,” Ms Foulkes said.

“I was up for that and gave it a go, it was my first live stream but it was good.”

Ms Foulkes, 23, has an extensive background in music and said she enjoyed the opportunity to try something new.

“I’ve been singing since I was seven and I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 12, I had lessons for nearly two years and then I started teaching myself after that and been playing ever since,” she said.

“It’s giving the community some entertainment while they’re staying at home. I think playing live on Facebook is a great platform to practice and gain confidence in performing.

“I wasn’t nervous but not physically seeing an audience felt very different.”

Ms Foulkes said the response had exceeded her expectations.

Ms Foulkes hopes that this will lead to something more.

“This is what I’ve always wanted, I haven’t focused on music much lately compared to what I used to but that’s still the dream,” she said.

“Music has always been the dream. I would like to perform

more regularly, locally and online.”

New centre gives Hope to people rebuilding lives

THE Hope Restart Centre has opened its doors to its first staff members and clients.

The 3000-square-metre residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre at Lucknow was due to be officially opened last week, but the event was rescheduled due to restrictions on gatherings.

Federal member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who secured $3.8 million from the federal government for the centre, paid tribute to everyone involved.

“Board chairman Peter Down, his wife Margaret and project patron Richard Rijs have been part of a remarkable team of locals and garnered the support of decision makers who could help them realise their goal,” Mr Chester said.

“As the project neared completion over the past few months, their dedication and commitment continued, despite some being personally impacted by the bushfires.

“They have finally realised their dream of providing hope to people with addiction issues and to their families and friends, who love them and want to help them.

“This centre will save lives.

It will bring hope to many families in Gippsland with a loved one struggling with addiction.

“The Hope Centre will provide a much-needed and vital service to our community by providing rehabilitation services to those affected by drug and alcohol addiction.

“The centre has now been handed over to Odyssey House Victoria. I feel privileged to have watched and supported Peter, Marg, Richard and their team achieve something truly remarkable.”

While the main building is already in use, there is still some ancillary work to be done outside, including fencing and finishing off the landscaping.

Earthworks began at the Lucknow site in 2018, with construction beginning at the start of 2019. Bairnsdale’s Brooker Builders constructed the main building.

“This project has also supported local jobs, with our traders and suppliers also involved during the construction phase,” Mr Chester said.

“As the centre becomes fully operational, there will be new opportunities for local suppliers, traders and services,” Mr Chester said.

“I look forward to the time when everyone involved in this project can gather together and celebrate this remarkable achievement.”

From a health perspective, it is imperative that we continue to heed the health advice that is being handed down by the experts because COVID-19 is real, and it is extremely serious.

The Federal Government has recently launched a COVIDSafe app, and its purpose is to try and contain any outbreaks quickly, which will also assist in the easing of future restrictions whilst still keeping Australians safe. TTU turns on lights for the people of Tyers

TRARALGON Tyers United Football and Netball Club have decided to turn on the lights at Tyers Recreation Reserve for the community to enjoy during lockdown.

The club announced they would be turning the lights on in a Facebook post last week each Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm until 7.30pm on a trial basis.

The Facebook post emphasised the initative was not an excuse to break social distancing rules and said it would not continue to turn the lights on if people are training in groups or catching up with friends.

It also included four rules for use of the ground, keep 1.5 metres between you and others, no groups of more than two people except for members of your immediate household, no congregating and be safe.

TTU president Shaun McClements said the club thought of the idea while discussing new ways to engage with the local community. “The lights were installed at the end of last year and we saw this as a good opportunity to let the community enjoy a safe and light environment,� Mr McClements said. “There are always people out there either walking their dogs or exercising especially since we are unsure of what is happening with the season.�

Mr McClements said TTU was always looking for new ways to engage with locals. “In Tyers there are not a lot of areas that are light at night and there are not a lot of streets with street lights so we wanted to provide a bright and safe area,� he said.

You can star in film festival

AN INVENTIVE film festival encouraging households to band together and produce a short movie has launched in the Latrobe Valley.

The Latrobe ISO Film Festival gives people of all ages the opportunity to contribute to and participate from the comfort of their own home.

The aim of the free festival is to foster creative talent as well as community connection.

Developed by the social marketing team We Are Latrobe, creative production company Nanoo Nanoo and the Latrobe Health Assembly, the Latrobe ISO Film Festival offers participants the chance to showcase their stories and talents with others by adopting an innovative approach to the traditional film festival model.

The festival will take place from tomorrow evening, with participants getting involved remotely.

Registrants will be provided with a theme at the opening of the festival and have 48 hours to produce their film.

The event will culminate with an online watch party to showcase the entries.

All Latrobe Valley residents are encouraged to get involved, either as contributors or viewers.

Nanoo Nanoo’s Eloisa Tripodi said the festival was open to anyone, from novices to seasoned filmmakers. “It’s a great chance for people to have some fun and see what they can achieve from home in one weekend,� Ms Tripodi said.

Latrobe Health Assembly executive officer Tanya Rong said the power of film to unite people was at the heart of the project. “The Latrobe Valley is rich with talent and stories and this event gives our community the chance to showcase that, to come together - remotely - and think outside the box,� Ms Rong said.

We Are Latrobe coordinator Chloe Benson said the festival was a great opportunity to foster creativity in the community. “Current lockdown laws have us all spending more time at home but restrictions of this kind have sparked the creativity of many,� Ms Benson said. “We came up for the idea while we were brainstorming about ways that we could engage the local community while they are in isolation.� “It is a great way for us to foster creativity in the community while also having people connect with others in their household and other households remotely.�

MADALIA Champ continued the winning run for Rosedale trainer John Connor with victory in the GJ Gardiner Homes Grade 5 Final (440m) at Sale on Sunday.

Connor tasted metropolitan success two days earlier when Madalia Maggie saluted at Sandown Park and rounded out a memorable Anzac weekend closer to home.

Madalia Champ ($11.70) travelled sweetly from box one and overhauled the plucky Sharky Shark in the concluding stages to land the $1650 first-prize by a half-length.

A son of Banjo Boy, Madalia Champ also banked owner/breeder Peter McKenzie the VICGREYS bonus of $1000.

It was a good evening for Rosedale trainers, with Carolyn Jones all smiles thanks to Zipping Hamish.

The exciting chaser took his record to eight wins from 19 starts after a sizzling 29.29 second run from box seven in the Gippsland Veterinary Hospital Mixed 4/5 (520m).

Zipping Hamish accounted for a pair of smart customers in Keenando (second) and Riley’s Paige (third), who had been sent out the odds-on favourite.

The victory was the second in the space of a week for the speedy son of El Grand Senor, who won a Grade 5 race at The Meadows on April 22.

Sale plays host to a meeting today, with Warragul on Friday and Sale again on Sunday.

ON what should have been a first birthday celebration for the Grand Ridge Rail Trail parkrun team, it was a quiet occasion shared by co-event directors Jodie Pincini and Stacey Harriage.

The morning started as a normal parkrun day would, with the run director acknowledging the traditional owners of the land.

On this special day, we also acknowledged the Anzacs who served in Gallipoli and remembered those who had served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations for our country.

From there things went a little bit differently!

On a live stream to the Facebook page, the co-event directors thanked the community that supported and embraced parkrun in its first year in Mirboo North.

They thanked the Mirboo District Community Foundation and Community Bank for putting forward the funds to start parkrun in the community.

They thanked parkruns major sponsors Medibank, the Athletes Foot and Blackmores, who keep parkrun free every week.

But most emphatically, they thanked the members of the Mirboo North community and the broader parkrun community for all their support in the first 12 months.

Many weeks, the volunteer roster was supported by volunteers from neighbouring parkruns such as Koonwarra and Inverloch as well as Churchill, Warragul and Newborough.

As Jodie and Stacey departed for their ‘freedom run’ along the trail, they shared a beautiful birthday cake made by RD Katrina and asked the community to head down and walk the trail for their daily exercise and to grab a piece of cake to celebrate!

The local parkrun community was invited to share photos of them on the trail and eating the cake onto the GRRT parkrun Facebook page.

The team look forward to welcoming the community back to parkrun, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Imperials, was kicked on the little finger, septicaemia set in and his finger was later amputated.

FOOTBALL

GEORGE Elder-Berwick, the inaugural president of the Mid Gippsland FL in 1935 died in the Sale Hospital on December 29, 1951.

Mr Elder-Berwick was a dentist in the Latrobe Valley with practices at Traralgon and Morwell, as well as appointments at Mirboo North and Boolarra.

While living in Morwell he was involved with many local sports with football and bowls his mainstay.

He also held executive positions with the Castlemaine and Geelong Football Clubs.

He was president of the Central Gippsland Football League and then in 1935 he became the Mid Gippsland FL’s first president.

He was also twice champion of the Central Gippsland Bowling Association and also represented Victoria in Bowls.

The MGFL best and fairest medal is named in his honour.

He was buried at Springvale in Melbourne on January 2, 1952.

THROWN OFF HORSE AND KILLED

ON June 12, 1902, Sale FC were to play Maffra and left the Albion Hotel at 1pm for a 3pm start.

On the way, a Sale player, Sam Weatherly was thrown from his horse and killed.

After the accident, the Sale team didn’t want to play the game and sent word to Maffra.

Maffra on hearing the sad news rushed to the accident scene to assist the Sale players and by the time everything was settled it was too late to play. Sale officially forfeited the match, but Maffra refused to take the points.

MATCH ABANDONED DUE TO FATAL ACCIDENT

Influential: The Mid Gippsland Football League’s inaugural president George Elder-Berwick.

PICKED THE CROP

IN 1937, the secretary of the Mardan FC (Woorayl FL) Mr J Whitehead was rushed to hospital with appendicitis and was unable to dig his potatoes.

The players decided to help out and on the Sunday after the match 24 players and officials turned up to dig the three acres of potatoes.

TRAPPED

WHILE playing football for Heyfield against Traralgon Creek in 1937, “Tip” Clark caught his foot in a rabbit trap when he was about to leap for a mark.

The trap had been set by trappers the night before. A further sweep of the ground found three more traps.

BEDRAGGLED TEAM

IN 1909, the South Gippsland FA sent a representative side to play Sale FC at Sale.

They left Yarram early Saturday morning but ran into a thunderstorm near Giffard where many had to shelter under trees. The team arrived in Sale half-frozen and with tired horses.

ON May 1, 1999 during the Traralgon-Sale match, Peter Hug 23, of Sale collapsed and died.

There was a clash of heads with some players leaving the field under the blood rule, Peter stayed on the field but collapsed, after preliminary first aid and ambulance assistance Peter later died.

The match was abandoned.

Sale retired the number 3 until a decade later (2010) when they brought back the jumper number which is only to be worn by the captain of the Sale FC. Traralgon and Sale currently play for the Peter Hug Memorial trophy.

COACH WAS DITCHED

TRARALGON footballers returning home by coach from Morwell in 1897 came to grief near Mr Olivier’s property, when a wheel came off the coach.

The coach tipped over and was wrecked in a ditch.

Two players received serious injuries which others received scratches and minor bruising.

HOT WHEELS

IN 1933, while taking players to Rosedale on Saturday a tyre on Mr Ridley’s truck blew out and not having a spare he continued on the flat tyre until reaching Mr Pearson’s property where the tyre had become very hot, it came off and burst into flame.

It was a close shave and the truck loaded with footballers narrowly escaped going up in flames.

GORED AND PLAYED

A player who was gored by a bull on Saturday morning played football that afternoon and discovered he had a broken collarbone and three broken ribs.

Ray Robbins, the secretary/player with Boolarra (Mid Gippsland FL) received a knock in the second

He visited Dr Birch on the Saturday night after feeling dizzy. On Monday morning he was found dead in bed.

A coronial inquest found that he had died of a burst spleen caused accidently while playing football.

ON October 13, 1933, a Traralgon footballer William Cruth died when his vehicle overturned near Gormandale at 1.30am.

Mr Cruth sustained fatal injuries when his single seater car went over a 50 feet embankment, the car turning a complete somersault.

Two passengers in the car were injured. The party were returning from a football sponsored dance at Gormandale.

YARRAGON CHANGE COLOURS

THE Carrajung Football Club was in difficulties for want of a suitable ground for the coming season.

During 1902, the young men of the district held working bees to improve the paddock for football (and cricket) on Mr J McKenzie’s paddock (which was leased to Mr M Kennedy).

Mr Kennedy lost the lease and the new leasee decided to plough the paddock and plant maize.

The Football Club are upset that they had put in a lot of work for improvements and the leasee was going to kick them off after 18 months.

The club will be approaching Mr McKenzie, the land owner, for another suitable site for a sports oval.

IN 1902 Yarragon’s captain Thomas Higgins was injured during a match, he was treated by a Warragul doctor after the game and was sent home to rest.

He felt sick for the next two days and on Tuesday morning he was found dead in bed.Yarragon in respect of their captain changed from red and blue to black and white.

PAUL and Tracey Templeton pulled off a training masterstroke when High Done bolted in to win at Sale on Tuesday.

The four-year-old gelding was beaten as an even-money favourite at Moe on Anzac Day, but found himself back at the races three days later.

High Done relished the quick back-up and under Noel Callow produced a career-best performance to win a $31,500 Class 1 Handicap (1738m) in impressive style.

The son of High Chaparral, backed from $2.50 into $2.20 before the jump, controlled the race from the front and powered away in the straight to win the second race of his 13-start career by 3 ½ lengths.

Bred in New Zealand, High Done started his racing career with Darren Weir and was then transferred to Mick Price following Weir’s high-profile disqualification in February 2019.

Despite flashes of promise, he was still a maiden when he was purchased by new interests and joined the Templeton team.

Having run second in his first start for the Latrobe Valley-based training partnership, High Done broke his maiden status at Mornington on March 31.

He has now had five starts for the Templetons, with two wins, two seconds and a fourth.

Fellow Moe trainer Russell Cluning saddled up two runners on the card.

Candy Puzzle ran a game second to the impressive Bless Her in a 1112m Maiden, while Adie ran up to her 80-1 odds, finishing sixth beaten 9 3/4 lengths in a 1421m Maiden.

Lenny Xuereb’s One For Rocky finished sixth, beaten 10 lengths by Quantum Mechanic, in a 1421m Class 1 Handicap.

TRARALGON tennis ace Ben Grumley has achieved what was not long ago just a pipe dream.

Earlier this month, on the back of a breakout year on the courts in 2019, the 18-year-old has landed a coveted scholarship with William Woods University to play college tennis in the United States.

Grumley will call the state of Missouri home for the next four years as he juggles a major in exercise science with his on-court commitments as part of the class of 2024.

WWU was a identified as a dream destination early in the piece for the teen talent as he weighed up his options.

“I was pretty rapt when it happened. It’s pretty weird that the first offer you get in January is the one you sign with in March,” he said.

“WWU were in the top three because in their competition they’re the number eight school in the US for their program.

“I thought about the academic side of it a fair bit, probably the same amount as a I thought about the tennis aspect of it because that’s the reason you’re going to college.”

Grumley impressed recruiters with his commitment on and off the court and drew high praise from William Woods first-year head coach Chance Joost.

“Ben is another kid that’s going to fit right in with this team in all facets: on the court, in the classroom, and personality,” Joost said of the 18-year-old.

“He is also a highly-rated kid out of Australia, ranking in the top 130 in the country there, so we’re really excited about signing him.

“He rounds out possibly one of the best classes at William Woods. I look forward to what Ben and his teammates are going to achieve in the upcoming years.”

A pair of singles and doubles wins at AMTs last year also helped the cause.

“I wasn’t expecting the results I got, but I was really happy with how it went,” he said.

“I was top 10 in Australia for my age and 130 in the men’s, so to have achieved by highest ranking and also some good results was the best I could’ve hoped for.”

Training has looked different

of late due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Grumley is taking it all in his stride and is hopeful the freshmen orientation scheduled for mid-August will go ahead as planned.

“At the moment it’s keeping my fitness up, I’ve been doing a lot of running and physical stuff and shadow swings without a ball, which is a bit weird,” he said.

“I think I do have some more growing to come, I’ve got to grow into my hands a bit because they’re massive, but I’m really looking forward to getting into it.”
