Heyfield’s microgrid option a hit

ONE of the country’s most impressive community sustainability projects will officially launch next week, with community representatives, dignitaries and energy experts gathering together to celebrate the MyTown Heyfield project.

The microgrid feasibility project, which secured $1.9 million in government funding, has cemented the town’s place as a leader in community-driven sustainability projects.

With the potential to act as a model for other regional towns, the project is now gaining the attention of communities all over Australia.

Over the next three years, the ‘MyTown’ project will determine what the best local energy solution is for the town.

This could be a microgrid, which would allow groups of homes and businesses to use, generate and share electricity among each other.

As part of the project, about 300 data collecting gadgets are being installed on meter boxes around Heyfield, gathering information from houses and businesses about energy usage.

Thanks to federal government funding and additional support from the Latrobe Valley Authority, the project is being run by the Heyfield Community Resource Centre and Australian digital energy company Wattwatchers, with help from the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Resource centre committee member Julie Bryer said the microgrid idea began with an idea to improve energy reliability and provide economic benefits for businesses and residents, and had grown into something with huge, Australia-wide implications.

“This is bigger than Ben Hur,” she said.

“Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the size of this and what it means for communities everywhere, and I think, ‘gosh, what have we started?’

“We’ve been having meetings with ministers and energy companies, and there’s people in Sydney involved, it really has been just incredible to see it all coming together.”

The resource centre has been at the forefront of several renewable energy projects that have provided economic benefits and supported a move to clean energy.

It headed a bulk-buying solar project that has helped Heyfield and the surrounding area boast one of the highest proportions of homes and businesses with solar panels in Australia, generating about 2.5 megawatts each year; has showcased a flag system to help households and businesses assess their level of sustainability and encourage a community-wide approach to sustainability; and headed a community insulation program and an LED light program.

Ms Bryer said she was proud of the Heyfield community for getting behind the sustainability projects and embracing challenges to reduce energy costs and create a better future.

“This is really all about community, and what the community wants,” she said.

As well understanding the feasibility of a microgrid for Heyfield, the MyTown project will also develop the knowledge and tools to make it faster, easier and cheaper for other similar towns in regional Australia to do the same for their communities.

TOP end of Collins Street foodies are getting a taste of Gippsland in a new restaurant focusing on the region’s finest produce.

Peruvian chef Alejandro Saravia opened the schmick three-level Melbourne eatery Farmer’s Daughters earlier this month, using 95 per cent Gippsland-sourced ingredients.

Mr Saravia said he fell in love with Gippsland through being a part of local food events such as the Meeniyan Garlic Festival and Wild Harvest Festival in Mallacoota.

He then began showcasing the region at pop-up farm-to-table events at the Australian Open and Melbourne Food and Wine festival, before coining the idea of a dedicated restaurant to Gippsland.

“Coming to Gippsland and meeting the farmers and producers got me thinking about food provenance - not only about the ingredients, but the people behind the ingredients,” he said.

QUANTUM Support Services is one step closer to building a multi-purpose court at the services’ women’s refuge.

“For me as a chef, it’s important to give this recognition. Gippsland is so diverse and beautiful, why not promote the region?”

Mr Saravia, so far, has about 30 Gippsland producers on board, supplying everything from vegetables, milk, cheese, eggs, meat, jams and wine.

He said he was keen to hear from any other local farmer wanting to showcase their produce on the fine food menu.

“They can approach us and we can work together, we let the farmers decide the ingredients we work with and the skills of the chefs design the dish,” he said.

“It has to be seasonal and it has to be good quality to represent the region and the farmers must have some sort of environmental approach to their farm.”

Mr Saravia dubbed the restaurant Farmer’s Daughters in homage to the unsung women in agriculture.

“I noticed females on the farm are the ones holding everything together, they are carrying the farm,

but they are not receiving the right acknowledgement for the roles on the farm,” he said.

“There are lots of farmer’s daughters taking over farms and sometimes they do a better job.”

Mr Saravia said so far, most of his diners were Collins Street corporates, but many people coming through the door also had a connection to the region.

He said he was also using the opportunity to encourage townies to get out of the big smoke and plan their next weekend away in Gippsland.

“People have been really embracing it and they love the fact we represent Gippsland. One of the positives of COVID is people realise how important it is to support local industries,” he said.

“We are grateful for all the support from the region, it’s been overwhelming, we really feel we are a part of the community. This is not just a restaurant, but a Gippsland embassy in Melbourne.”

Truckies can report dangerous locations

Folk festival goes online

GIPPSLAND truckies are being invited to report dangerous road hot spots to a new TruckSpot website that is collecting information to call for action on road safety.

Trucking advocate Safe Freight Networks Australia is rolling out the program in Gippsland, western Victoria and south-east South Australia as the first regions to take part in the initiative.

The program is being supported by the federal government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative and CrowdSpot to enabling professional drivers assess the roads they drive on.

Safe Freight Networks Australia project manager John Ernst said Gippsland truckies were facing a raft of road safety issues.

He said some of the main issues were low hanging tree branches, line-of-sight at intersections, road width, crumbling road shoulders and manoeuvring through towns.

“Currently some funds are only available after there has been a road death, but often truck drivers have been identifying those hot spots for decades,” Mr Ernst said.

“By allowing drivers to have an easy-to-use method of identifying the issues we hope to get ahead of the curve and not wait till there is a death.”

One driver had already taken to the website to report overhanging trees and poor surfaces on the Traralgon Creek Road.

“Major log truck thoroughfare that is very narrow. Pushbike riders insist on riding along here. Serious accident waiting to happen,” the report said.

Mr Ernst pointed out a recent story in The Express where a Mirboo East-based interstate hay transporter was forced into driving on the wrong side of the Grand Ridge Road in Boolarra South due to low branches.

“This did not surprise me as it’s a common occurrence. The more drivers report these problems, we can prioritise where areas need urgent attention, we look at what the data is telling us,” he said.

“We’ve already seen vegetation cleared as result of works requested by our drivers and we’ve always found Regional Roads Victoria responsive to the requests, taking them very seriously.”

Mr Ernst said Safe Freight Networks Australia was formed about 10 years ago to find solutions for local safety concerns after a number of truck accidents in East Gippsland.

He said one success story was creating a truck stop near Rosedale as a result of the collaboration between truck drivers and government departments.

The Truckspot website will be taking reports until the end of March, after which the data will be collated and taken to roads authorities to request funding.

Senator’s say on paper use

VICTORIAN Senator Raff Ciccone has weighed into union concerns over the use of Australianmade copy paper in the Commonwealth public sector.

Mr Ciccone raised the issue in the Senate this week after documents revealed the federal government had ditched paper made at Maryvale for imported paper at the height of the pandemic last year.

In the three months from July to September 2020, the federal government had purchased about one-third of Australian-made copy paper.

“The workers at the Opal Australian Paper mill in Maryvale, in my home state of Victoria, are trying to have a go,” the eastern suburbs-based Labor MP said.

“Clearly the workers at the mill couldn’t even count on the federal government to be on their side.”

Mr Ciccone has been previously outspoken in his support of the timber industry, and he cited the CFMEU campaign calling on the government to purchase 100 per cent Australian-made paper.

“A commitment like that will provide workers

with stability and job security at a time when it is so badly needed,” he said.

He accused the federal government of taking “no serious action to arrest the decline of manufacturing jobs and no serious action to support and invest in regional jobs”.

“It has put the jobs of Maryvale paper mill workers at risk,” Mr Ciccone said.

“My message to the coalition is: commit to procuring 100 per cent Australian-made paper. Do more to support and invest in regional Australia.”

The union campaign is being backed by Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who had previously stated he was encouraging all MPs to purchase Aussie-made copy paper.

The Department of Finance oversees procurements had blamed state border restrictions for significantly disrupting the production and supply of copy paper to Commonwealth agencies.

They have assured Aussie-made copy paper procurements have started to return to previous levels now since supply issues between borders have been rectified.

Toongabbie works on track

Valentine’s Day still a winner

WORKS to revitalise the township of Toongabbie and improve the local infrastructure are approaching completion.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the $300,000 revitalisation would make Toongabbie more accessible and attractive to locals and visitors alike.

“These upgrades to pathways and drainage not only improves the appearance of the township’s streetscapes, but ensures safe and accessible pathways for locals walking around town,” Mr Chester said.

“The Toongabbie Stadium carpark and the Toongabbie Recreation Reserve have been sealed as well.”

Mr Chester said the Toongabbie Mechanics Institute was also receiving some attention as part of the works.

“Currently heritage preservation works as well as the installation of heating at the Mechanics Institute is underway,” Mr Chester said.

“Once completed, these upgrades will make the facility more useable and comfortable during the colder months of the year.”

Works are due to be completed by end of June 2021.

Mr Chester secured funding for the revitalisation works as part of a $2 million investment in Latrobe City through the federal government’s Drought Communities Program.

Latrobe City has also allocated funding received to the new Flynn hall and recreation reserve works ($1.2 million), replacing the roof of the clubrooms at Tyers Recreation Reserve ($50,000), and a storage shed at Yinnar and District Historical Society and Museum ($46,000).

FLORISTS were scrambling to change plans just two days before the most romantic day of the year when the state was forced into the sudden lockdown on Friday afternoon.

Moe florist Danielle Ferguson said her staff started preparing for Valentine’s Day since before Christmas, but had to shut shop leading into the flower trade’s peak day.

Ms Ferguson said they had ordered five-times the amount of roses for Valentine’s Day, and four-fold the amount of other stock, but feared it may have all ended up wasted.

“You don’t want to know what went through my head at the news of the lockdown, we panicked. I rang the health department to ask what we could do in terms of trading,” Ms Ferguson said.

“We were very concerned about the effect this would have on us, we thought we would have to throw it all in the bin as if you don’t sell it you lost it. Flowers are perishable items.”

Instead the business began offering over the phone orders, home deliveries and contactless pick up services.

“People were confused if we were open or not, but we had a lot of messages of support and well wishes from people worried about us,” she said.

“We ended up having a good weekend and got everyone’s orders out. It was not as good as other years, there was a downturn from previous years, but we still had a decent weekend.”

Local Members of Parliament had taken to social media urging people to support florists in lockdown.

“Love still blooms - it just looks a little different this year,” Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said.

“Support your local florist this Valentine’s Day and make sure their beautiful, colourful and fragrant stock is put to good use - click and collect, and delivery services are specifically permitted.”

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said regional florists had stocked up thousands of dollars’ worth of roses and flowers in preparation for the big day.

“Please support your local florist, by ringing and ordering, or if they have a website click and ordering a home delivery,” Ms Bath said.

“If you can make it in the door tonight (Friday), visit and purchase from your local store. Support small businesses and help them survive.”

THE Latrobe Valley community is invited to a forum in Morwell next month to hear about a new campaign pushing for the state government to tackle air pollution.

The People’s Clean Air Action Plan is being supported by a coalition of environment, community, legal and health groups.

The Victorian action plan calls for the state government to install better pollution control standards from coal-fired power stations, and increase air quality monitoring with better access to information.

It is also calling to reduce vehicle pollution, phase out wood heaters and legislate for healthbased ambient air quality standards.

The forum, which is being hosted by Environment Justice Australia, is also tying into calls for submissions into a state Parliamentary Inquiry into Health Impacts of Air Pollution in Victoria.

Environmental Justice Australia lawyer Bronja Lipski accused state and federal governments of giving Latrobe Valley coal generators “preferential treatment”, despite numerous pollution breaches and reports outlining the health and economic costs of air pollution.

“We have the ability to reduce toxic pollution in the air we breathe, we just need the Victorian government to do its job and implement the measures needed to reduce toxic emissions to as close to zero as possible,” Ms Lipski said.

The People’s Clean Air Action Plan is being backed by Asthma Australia, Lung Foundation Australia, Doctors for the Environment Australia, Healthy Futures, Environment Victoria, Communities for Clean Air, Maribyrnong Truck Action Group and Voices of the Valley.

Funding boost for local roads LIVES will be saved as some of Gippsland’s worst roads receive a $25 million funding boost, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said the federal government was providing $20 million for the road safety program with the state government contributing $5 million.

It includes $6.3 million for works on the Traralgon-Maffra Road and $4.3 million for the Rosedale-Longford Road.

“This initiative to deliver safety upgrades on several arterial roads will reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries,” Mr Chester said.

“It will also boost the local economy with jobs during construction of new road shoulders and other upgrades.”

Mr Chester said the routes which had been targeted were all high-speed arterial routes which were owned and maintained by the state government.

“I want to thank the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack for working with the state government to deliver this funding package,” he said.

Aggravated burglary

A MORWELL woman was woken at 5am on Monday, February 15 to a man allegedly breaking into her house.

The man allegedly entered the house through an unlocked side door and allegedly stole jewellery and the woman’s car keys.

The man then allegedly drove off in the woman’s silver, 2011 Mazda Neo sedan, which has not been seen since.

Anyone who has seen a car of this description in the area is urged to contact Morwell Police Station on 5131 5000.

Police also said this is a solemn reminder to make sure your doors and windows are locked at night.

Alleged assault

THE driver of a utility that rolled on TyersWalhalla Road was lucky to escape unscathed.

Emergency services were called to the road trap at 1.20pm on Tuesday, February 16 to reports of a ute turned on its side.

The driver, a Yallourn North man in his 20s, was driving on Tyers-Walhalla Road towards Tyers when police believe he sped around a corner.

The car then went into the gutter on its left hand side, the driver then over-corrected and flipped the vehicle.

Latrobe Highway Patrol, CFA units from Tyers and Glengarry and FRV responded to the incident.

The road was closed for about an hour as the truck had rolled into the middle of the road.

Latrobe Highway Patrol’s First Constable Michael Gauci said the inquiry is ongoing into the accident.

“This is a reminder for people to drive to the conditions and your own ability,” he said.

“At the end of the day that is what’s most important on roads like this.”

POLICE are searching for a driver after a bottle was flung from a moving vehicle towards a mobile road safety camera operator.

The operator, a 62-year-old Toongabbie man, was parked on Traralgon-Maffra Road in Glengarry on December 31, 2020 when the bottle allegedly hit the operator’s car.

At 7.15pm the operator said he heard a male voice, then a loud crash as the glass bottle was thrown from a white utility vehicle at the windscreen of the camera operator.

The bottle caused extensive damage and the operator was uninjured during the incident.

The vehicle is described as a white dual cab ute possibly a Nissan Navara D22 - with two spotlights, a silver bular, black tray and was carrying a blue eski at the time.

Police released footage and photos of the utility in the hope that someone recognises the vehicle because officers can’t obtain a registration number from the footage.

A MAN was allegedly assaulted near the train station in Lloyd Street, Moe. At 9.05am, on Saturday, February 13 a 30-yearold Dandenong man was allegedly assaulted by a 29-year-old Moe man following an argument.

The Dandenong man received facial injuries and was transported to Latrobe Regional Hospital.

The Moe man was arrested and bailed to appear before the Latrobe Magistrates Court in July.

Spud harvest time in Thorpdale

LIKE Christmas, some things come around every year, and in Thorpdale, it is the spud harvest.

The harvest season commenced recently and is set to run until mid-May. It will be all systems go getting tonnes of potatoes out of paddocks, into sorting sheds and onto trucks making their way to various destinations across Australia.

The worlds most versatile vegetable has become synonymous with the small farming community, as generations of growers have continued in the footsteps of their predecessors.

Thorpdale farmer Stuart Jennings is one such, and is growing around 70 acres of potatoes this year.

“It’s (Thorpdale) fairly unique being a small area with a high rate of production,” he said.

“It hasn’t really got going yet but another week it will be the silly season.”

With Thorpdale located inside a former volcanic crater, the rich red soil of the area makes it ideal for growing potatoes.

The remarkably sticky red soil has almost become as well known in Thorpdale as the potato itself, and has led to many mothers refusing to let their children wear white shirts or socks.

Shoppers traversing their local supermarket or wholesaler may see some potato varieties grown in Thorpdale.

“Things that people would recognise would be things like Duttch h Creams and d Seb bagos,”” Jennings said.

“We’re brushed market, so the ones that have dirt on them, they keep a bit longer than a washed.

“I always tell people if you are going to buy spuds, buys some brushed spuds and buy some

After potatoes are planted and irrigated for weeks on end, the exposed tops of the potato plant are slashed, allowing the crop to be dug up and brought to the surface.

Potatoes are brought to the surface through a process known as ‘diggi ging’, i which essentially works using a convener belt pulled

by tractor. Depending on what is needed, farmers may choose to have their crop dug with a harvester, or simply hand picked.

Paddock staff on the harvester work to remove things such as dirt clumps and any potatoes that are damaged, before the potatoes are transported from the paddock to a packing sheed, where they then travel over a series of rollers and belts to be ma anually sorted.

to go straight into hessian bags, cardboard boxes or wooden bins.

Potatoes picked straight into bins are generally used as seed for the next season.

Strangely enough, the footwear of choice for many potato pickers is scuba diving boots, as their ligh htweiigh ht consttructtion and d tigh ht fii allow pickers to get around the fit paddock freely without dirt getting inside their socks.

In days gone by pickers would be paid for every 50 kilogr gram r bag picked. According to local legend, which has surely increased over

time, the most bags picked in a day was around 500.

Jennings was pragmatic when asked how the forecast looked for the season ahead “I’m guessing slow. We’ve seen a bit of fallout from COVID this year which we weren’t expecting to be quite as bad as what it is,” he said.

“Hopefully over the next few months it will pick up a bit and we’ll be able to move a bit more stuff and we’ll be able to catch up.

“When everyone started panic buying everything went crazy and we probably had about two weeks where anything that we could get out of the shed was gone - everything sold.

“Then after that it was very patchy, very hot and cold, you’d have one week where you’d sell nothing and the next week you’d be flat out again.

“It’s definitely had an impact and I think we’re seeing a slowdown in the market because of it this year.”

Farmers in the area are also dabbling in other products in order to progress further.

“We’re seeing a bit of diversification. Thorpdale is traditionally a brush potato market, people are starting to move into other things to work with the potato,” Jennings said.

“We’re seeing a few guys growing cabbages, guys growing broccoli, we diversify a lot into onions and carrots.

“People are seeing there’s other things than spuds to grow.”

While there might be other crops being grown, Thorpdale’s legacy as beiing home to th he humb ble spu ud looks set to stand the test of tim me.

Road trippers can get on with moving Sport’s back

ROAD trippers and campers were caught on-thehop in Victoria’s snap five-day lockdown with one couple forced to stop and take things easy for a few days in Boolarra.

French travellers Catharina Renke and Ben Longueville were on their way to New South Wales and had planned a stopover at the Boolarra pub when the lockdown was announced last week.

“We had spent a night here and went out to do some shopping in Moe, when we came back we found out we were in lockdown, this was surprising,” Ms Renke said.

“We are unsure what we can and can’t do. We hoped to be in New South Wales this week, but we are used to changing plans now, we have to be flexible.”

The pair came Down Under on a year’s working visa almost 12 months ago before COVID-19 changed everything, and were hoping to jump on a plane out of Sydney next month.

They had been doing some farm work and garden maintenance, and were awaiting a three-month visa extension to buy some time with changing restrictions.

“We hope we can get home but the problem is restrictions with the border, we are waiting until the end of this lockdown to see what’s happening,” Ms Renke said.

“We wanted to visit Wilsons Prom, but we will now rush to the border just in case. For now, we are having a rest, playing cards and reading books.”

The Express contacted the Department of Health and Human Services for clarification, but it did not respond by deadline.

SPORT and recreation was given the green light at yesterday’s announcement by the Premier.

Under guidelines released for outdoor physical recreation and community sport, up to a maximum of 100 patrons are permitted for outdoor fitness classes (excluding anyone necessary for running the class) with a density quotient of one person per two square metres.

Record keeping is required and venues with a capacity of greater than 500 patrons must publish a COVIDSafe plan online.

Gym and exercise classes are limited to 50 people (excluding anyone necessary for running the class), while COVID marshals are required when gyms are staffed.

At times when gyms are unstaffed, a density quotient of one person per eight square metres applies.

At club sport level, things will look virtually identical to what they were pre-lockdown, although the use of masks may be more prevalent in places such as club rooms where physical distancing might not be possible.

Both the Traralgon District Cricket Association and Latrobe Valley District Cricket League confirmed scheduled matches for this weekend would go ahead.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced yesterday morning that the Stage 4 lockdown would conclude as scheduled.

“This is not over there are still nine days to go for the last ... of the positive cases,” he told media in Melbourne.

“Whilst we can revert to almost all settings that applied last Friday there are some exceptions.

“I of course acknowledge the very difficult circumstances many have faced but there was simply no alternative but to follow the advice provided.

“The circuit breaker has worked ... I am very proud of every Victorian for the sacrifice they have made and all the people working on delivering this outcome.”

Mr Andrews also said that more announcements would be made next Friday.

“Next Friday, we’ll be able to be even more definitive about the epidemiological picture across the state, the status of the virus across the state, and revert to almost all of the COVID-safe summer settings,” he said.

The restrictions that will remain until Friday, February 26 are: Masks required (indoors and outdoors) when you cannot socially distance.

Five visitors allowed in your home.

Twenty people in public gatherings.

One household visit per day to hospital and aged care facilities.

People can return to work to 50 per cent capacity in public and private sectors.

Retail and schools will open, funerals and

weddings can go ahead in line with density limits of the venue they are being held in.

TAFE Gippsland also confirmed it would resume classes today.

Sport and recreation can resume.

On Wednesday, the state recorded no new cases of coronavirus, Victoria has 25 active cases.

The state recorded 39,258 tests on Tuesday, which Mr Andrews said was probably the “single biggest” day of COVID-19 tests in Victoria.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said a day of no recorded cases was positive, but warned the incubation period for the virus was two weeks.

“Everyone loves a day of zeros, but the incubation period is 14 days,” he said.

“There are literally thousands of people who have potentially been exposed to infectious cases.”

The five-day lockdown was introduced in response to a coronavirus cluster which started at the Holiday Inn quarantine hotel, in Melbourne.

As of yesterday, 19 cases were linked to the outbreak and 3400 people in isolation after being identified as close contacts. “(That’s) what’s enabling us to be confident that we have this outbreak under control and to release the restrictions,” COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimer said.

“Over the coming days as we get to Friday next week we will continue our program of checking in with these people, ensuring they are getting their day 11 tests, and in some cases they get their day 14 tests.”

Victorian Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Paul Guerra said the state’s businesses were ready to get going.

“We’ve got this Victoria, we’ve done it before and we can do it again,” he said.

STUDENTS are back at school across the Latrobe Valley today.

Schools had to shut their doors with only a few hours’ notice after Premier Daniel Andrews announced the five-day snap lockdown for Victoria last week.

Students returned to remote learning on Monday, as schools waited on yesterday’s press conference to learn when students would return.

Grey Street Primary School principal Dean Gray said the school had a backup plan ready for the possibility of an extended lockdown.

“We had plans in place and were prepared to continue remote learning, if that was going to be required. Over the last few days, we sent home some activities for the students to do over the break.”

Newborough East Primary School principal Julie Skee said she was “blown away” with the resilience of the students and teaching staff after Friday’s announcement.

“I truly commend out staff and school community with how they responded to lockdown 3.0,” she said.

“The staff never cease to amaze me ... we sent through hard packs of work, for all the students and we had a scheduled time that parents could some and pick up those pack, adhering to the COVID restrictions and it was also on our Compass site.

“We are really excited because we like it much better when we have all of our staff and students back on campus.”

FOLLOWING a meeting with state government officials on Friday, January 29, the Hazelwood North Community Action Group has re-affirmed its strong opposition to the ULAB Recycling Facility and has called for the project to be abandoned.

The Hazelwood North Community Action Group condemns the Minister for Planning, Hon Richard Wynne’s unnecessary intervention into the approvals process to approve the ULAB Recycling Facility.

His decision to intervene in the approvals process and approve the project on New Year’s Eve without the courtesy of first consulting with the Latrobe City Council and the community represents a major breach of community trust.

The January 29 meeting was a hurried attempt by a state government in damage control, to hold a meeting to consult with the community before Parliament returned in early February, after the project has been already approved and the conditions have been set by the Minister, has been described by the Hazelwood North Community Action Group as too little too late!

The Hazelwood North Community Action Group said, “The Minister for Planning did not have the courtesy to attend the meeting on January 29 to explain his decision and to answer questions. The January 29 meeting should have occurred before the Minister for Planning, Hon Richard Wynne, intervened and approved the project!”

The Hazelwood North Community Action Group said, “We remain strongly opposed to the development, irrespective of what conditions are set”.

Many questions remain unanswered, and the proponent does not have a social licence to operate!

The Hazelwood North Community Action Group believes that the Minister for Planning has been ill informed on the project, which presents an unacceptable risk to public health and the environment.

The Hazelwood North Community Action Group requests a meeting with the Minister for Planning, Hon Richard Wynne, to discuss his reasons for the decision to exercise his power of intervention, and ask him to reconsider and overturn his decision to approve the development.

IN 1963, I worked for a brake company in Dandenong. The day I started work, the boss called Snowy said, you can make a mistake once or twice, but a third and you’re out the door.

Working on people’s cars and their lives rely on your work, double check it before giving it to someone to be put back on the car.

This Andrews has had three stuff-ups, one after the other, with hotel quarantine.

There should have been no leaks.

The staff should have been trained, then they should stay within the site for 10 days until the next shift rotates.

Andrews used untrained staff, has put all of Victoria’s companies under terrible financial strain and wasted millions of taxpayer money.

It is amazing there is still no-one responsible for 800 people dying. Andrews and the nine ministers should all be sacked, if not charged, under his workplace laws.

He does not deserve to be in government.

Remembering the bombing of Darwin

EACH year on February 19, Australia marks Bombing of Darwin Day to commemorate the first time the Australian mainland came under direct attack during the Second World War. Darwin as a major Allied base was regarded as a vital asset in Australia’s defences against a Japanese Empire that had recently attacked Pearl Harbor, captured Singapore and was rapidly invading the then Dutch East Indies to Australia’s immediate north.

Darwin came under attack by Japanese fighters and bombers on February 19, 1942, the first of many air raids carried out on the top end of Australia.

The two raids on this day, separated by about 80 minutes, killed more than 250 Australian and Allied service personnel and civilians.

The air raids on Darwin involved more than 240 enemy aircraft.

During the first raid, the American Destroyer USS Peary was sunk, killing 88 American sailors and wounding 13 - the greatest single loss of life on any ship attacked that day.

Further raids took place in April, June, July and November 1942 and March 1943, carried out with forces of 30 to 40 aircraft.

Between these large raids, small groups of Japanese aircraft also carried out other operations on Darwin.

On November 12, 1943, the 64th and final air raid on Darwin occurred.

Over the period, northern Australia had seen a total of 97 air attacks and while these ceased, enemy air reconnaissance continued over the region for the majority of 1944.

On behalf of Australia, we remember all those who died during the Bombing of Darwin and subsequent attacks in defence of our nation.

What will the jobs cost?

WE all want jobs to make a positive contribution, as well as making a profit.

In relation to the proposed ULAB facility at Hazelwood North: Is it going to make a positive contribution to the Latrobe Valley?

Not if it harms people.

Fifty jobs may represent a lot of income, but it could easily be swallowed up in medical or other costs if people are subject to lead poisoning.

The proposed plant is too close to where people are living.

And, as far as job creation goes, other facilities in Australia are expanding and will need used car batteries.

Serious questions need to be asked

THE announcement of the successful production of hydrogen from coal at the Loy Yang pilot plant as part of the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) project in this newspaper (February 4) was touted as a great milestone.

This was in the context of it being the forerunner of a massive scaling up of Gippsland brown coal generation of hydrogen for export to Japan and other nations.

However, apart from proving the technology and testing the transport of it overseas, the knowledge from which can also be used by green hydrogen producers, there are serious questions that need to be asked 1. Do we really want to increase our carbon emissions when we are already witnessing climate tipping points across the world?

Australia having already exhausted our carbon budget to keep us below 2C of warming, are we prepared to increase our carbon emissions? The proposed CCS will capture at most 90 per cent of the CO2, leaving the remaining 10 per cent to further pollute our atmosphere.

2. Do we really want to see billions more spent on developing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to enable this to proceed as it is an extremely carbon intensive process and the scale-up will not proceed without it?

3. Who will pay for the CCS? IF not J-Power and AGL, are we the tax-payer expected to foot the bulk of, or a substantial portion of the cost of CCS in Bass Strait, when CCS projects have continually failed around the world?

Footnote: The last remaining large scale CCS project in the USA closed during the last week, because it was uneconomic, even when the captured CO2 was used to flush out further oil and gas 4. Are we as a society in the Latrobe Valley

willing to sacrifice ever more valuable farmland in view of the lasting legacy problems that previous and current open-cut mining is producing in the Valley?

5. Associated with the last point is that the larger the open-cuts become, the more water they need to fill them when they are rehabilitated. Especially so in a drying climate, with farmers competing for the water for crops and livestock.

6. Who thinks that it is a good idea that Japan gets an emissions-free fuel, while Australia has to deal with the cost of sequestering the CO2?

7. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to direct all the massive amounts of money ($500 million on the pilot plant) to renewable (green) hydrogen than to keep spending billions on a technology which may still attract a carbon tariff from some customers (the UE, Britain and probably the USA)?

8. Even considering that this is a pilot plant, for the money spent so far to produce three tonnes of hydrogen a year, several green hydrogen proponents have said they could finance solar and wind farms to power an electrolyser to produce 20 to 30 tonnes of hydrogen a day from water.

The latest research on climate change is frightening. The globe is about 1.2-1.3C hotter than it was in 1850.

Researchers have shown that at an average of 2C warmer, plants become net emitters of CO2 rather net removers of it from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, which if applied to the Amazon rainforests and indeed our Australian forests would mean rapid climate meltdown, not to mention less oxygen in the atmosphere. Game over.

In light of this and every other piece of scientific evidence, can we really afford to increase industrial CO2 output to the air?

Surely the aim needs to be transitioning to 100 per cent renewable electricity, electric vehicles and green hydrogen for industry and heavy transport as soon as we can (by 2030) and to concurrently adopt large scale processes to draw down greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

As the COVID crisis has shown, things can change incredibly quickly when we are forced to.

I READ with interest Dr Jayaweera’s press release (Opinion, The Express, February 11) on behalf of Chunxing Corporation recently, refuting several negative comments about the company, to with the inference about any connection with the ‘ Belts and Roads ‘ program and ‘ State Ownership ‘.

Upon googling their site, on the opening page are several sub-headings: Home: Our Parent Group: About ULAB, and more.

On clicking ‘Our Parent Group’ we learn that ‘New Chunxing Recycling Group’ is a major shareholder of Chunxing Corporation P/L ... (60 per cent on another page).

This ‘New Chunxing’ also actively responds to the the national ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ strategic development plan ... and so on.

The group has investments in Australia, China, Thailand, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates, hardly an endorsement, in my view!

In regards to ‘ State Ownership,’ some of us are aware that as long as an overseas investment doesn’t offend the CCP, all will be well.

NATIONALS Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has raised concerns in relation to the educational stability of regional students.

The World Health Organization has said school closures are devastating for students and have clear negative impacts on child health, education and development.

Ms Bath said closing all regional schools when there are zero cases in regional Victoria is a disproportionate action by the Andrews government which significantly impacts mental wellbeing and belonging of students.

“At this stage of the pandemic response, a blanket closure of schools should not form part of Victoria’s state-wide restriction,” she said.

“If the Andrews government health advice says it’s safe to hold the Australian Open tennis, then it is safe for children to be at school.”

Victorian students lost 112 days of face-toface learning in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, while in comparison their New South Wales counterparts only lost 29 days.

Ms Bath said speaking with parents she got a sense that certain children are in a vulnerable position and schools cannot operate like a light switch.

“After having a disrupted year in 2020, I am concerned that less motivated students are again experiencing a loss of engagement so early in the school year,” Ms Bath said.

“As a former secondary school teacher I know there is no substitute for face-to-face classroom learning and remote learning does not suit everyone.

“Students don’t need these constant disruptions to their education.

“The Andrews government should be doing everything it can to bridge the gap between regional and metropolitan schools.

“The experts consistently say schools are safe and education must be prioritised by Labor.

“The Andrews government must provide stability and continuity for our regional students.”

Not Just a Knot is a playful story of a young girl who does not want to part with a knot in her hair, while her mother tries to brush her hair.

The kindergarten teacher still enjoys reading picture books and was “stoked” to publish one of her own.

“I wanted to write, I just love picture books, I still get picture books for Christmas I will always I will probably be 50 and still getting them,” Ms Sizeland said.

“It’s just a bit of a passion, anything important that I am going to talk to the kinder children or my children about it’s almost always began with a book. It’s just a great way to introduce them to different topics or issues.”

Ms Sizeland said Not Just a Knot “is a little bit of a quirky book about a girl with a knot in her hair, but in the end she just wants to spend time with her mum”.

“I have two girls and it’s quite inspired by them ... it’s a bit of a reminder that I should slow down a bit sometimes and just spend time with them,” she said.

Ms Sizeland’s talents are not just with the written word, she also illustrated the whole book.

“I’ve always loved art, I have never really had any training I just kept drawing it until I was happy with the outcome,” she said.

“The illustrations are mostly charcoal, it was what best captured the messiness of the knot.

“I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pull off the illustrations, so I was really happy because that was a big goal for me.”

“The writing came first and then I started working on the illustrations and in the end mixed it all up a bit, it I had it all laid out in the living room for a while.”

Not Just a Knot was published in November last year after coronavirus restrictions delayed the process and can be purchased online on all good book sites.

Cooking up a storm: Susan Daniells has discovered a real love of cooking.

NEWBOROUGH’S Susan Daniells has discovered a whole new world through her cooking.

Ms Daniells started cooking classes 14 months ago through non-for-profit disability service provider Headway, after a build-up of fluid in her brain caused her vision loss.

Over the course of eight months, Ms Daniells underwent 15 operations and after that found herself making frozen pies and sausage rolls for meals every day.

But, Ms Daniells said she now has an array of recipes to choose and some more skills in the kitchen.

“I am definitely a more gourmet cook now, being

able to do it myself is great,” she told The Express.

“My eyesight could deteriorate more, so I want to use it while I can and enjoy my cooking while I can.”

For Christmas in 2019, Ms Daniells was gifted a slow cooker and last year an air fryer.

Headway’s Joanne Watt has made sure she uses these appliances in her cooking lessons.

Ms Daniells now has three thick folders filled with delicious recipes, which she regarded as her own personal cookbooks.

“Because my eyesight is limited, Joanne will organise what we will cook for next week and type out the recipes in big bold letters, so I keep it all in a folder for when I want to make them myself,” she said.

“Between the folders they have slow cooker

recipes, air fryer recipes and all together I have about 70 odd recipes ... we make around two to three recipes a week.”

One recipe that has proved a crowd favourite was black forest cake which - like most recipes - took a bit of practice to make perfect.

“Last year we did a black forest cake, and that was a bit hard the first time, but then I made it for a friend’s birthday and Christmas Day,” Ms Daniells said.

“Mind you, our first attempt at the black forest cake didn’t come out too well, when we took it out of the oven it looked more like a cookie.

“Sometimes if it doesn’t work, we may go for a different recipe and go from there.”

HEALTH Minister Martin Foley has announced that submissions for the new $200 million Metropolitan Health Infrastructure Fund (MHIF) and the fifth round of the $120 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF) have opened, ensuring health services across the state can continue to provide world-class healthcare for all Victorians.

Established as part of the 2020/21 state budget, the MHIF will fund construction, remodelling and refurbishment projects, equipment, information and communication technology and other vital upgrade works to meet service demand, and improve safety and infection prevention and control measures at Melbourne’s busiest hospitals and community health services.

“This funding will help hospitals across the state deliver the high-quality care Victorians deserve and ensure our hospitals can continue doing what they do best - saving lives,” Mr Foley said.

“The new $200 million Metropolitan Health Infrastructure Fund will ensure our local health services have the vital infrastructure and equipment they need to continue to respond to the needs of their local community.”

The RHIF was established in 2016-17 to help regional and rural health services improve the safety and quality of services, service capacity, models of care, patient and staff amenity, and service efficiency.

Since 2016, the RHIF has funded more than 380 health infrastructure projects, including a $9.7 million Healthy Community Access Hub in Kyneton, $6 million Aboriginal co-operative Medical and Regional Health Hub in Ballarat and a $4 million Integrated Health Centre in Yarram.

Round 5 funding will take the total value of the RHIF to $470 million, making it the largest program of its type in Victoria. For grant program guidelines or to apply, visit vhhsba. vic.gov.au. Applications close March 31, 2021.

COMMUNITY members are invited to join Gippsland Water’s online event to learn more about the water outlook for the region and plans to ensure water availability for the future.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the online event will be held on Tuesday, February 23 at 12.30pm.

LOCAL Justice of the Peace will recommence their duties at Traralgon Police Station from today.

JPs have traditionally provided a document signing station as a community service, however this had to be stopped due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As well as a voluntary community service, the document signing station assists in reducing the workload of local police officers.

JPs will be available each Tuesday and Thursday at Traralgon Police Station from the hours of 11am to 2pm.

Practice adopts new name

Moving forward, Dr Hiran said his goal was to make Royal Medical Center the best it could be.

“It’s a big step buying a clinic and developing your own practice, but we need good general practice services to the Valley,” he said.

“My vision is to try and create all the services in one house, where the patient can walk in and have a full range of general practice incorporated

with specialists. Morwell gets patients from (the) Yallourn (district), this side of Churchill, even as far as Trafalgar, they all come through Morwell, so if you have a good general practice service here, it will be a good service for the community.

“What matters is service we provide to the community.

“I want Royal Medical Center to be the clinic that patients love coming in and they’re happy coming out, so that means we have done our service to the community.”

Better mental health support for workers NEW laws passed by the Parliament recently will make it easier for Victorian workers to get treatment and support for work-related mental health injuries as soon as they need it.

Delivering on a key election commitment, the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Amendment (Provisional Payments) Act 2020 removes barriers for workers seeking urgent mental health support.

The new laws mean that Victorian workers who seek compensation for a mental health injury under WorkCover will receive payments for reasonable medical expenses while they await the outcome of their claim.

Covering expenses such as GP visits, psychiatrist or psychologist appointments and medication, the payments scheme ensures workers will not have to delay getting the care they deserve, while covering stressful out of pocket costs.

Mental health injury claims can be complex and take longer to determine than physical injury claims. These important reforms come at a time when work-related mental injury claims are growing significantly - it’s expected they’ll account for a third of all workers’ compensation claims by 2030.

Workplace Safety Minister Ingrid Stitt said giving workers the support they need early increases their chance of recovery and a successful return to work.

“We’re proud to be ensuring that Victorian workers can get the treatment they need quickly so they can return to work as soon as they can,” she said.

The scheme, which commences on July 1, 2021, encourages all workers in need of help with a work-related mental health injury to make a claim and get the treatment they need.

Eligible volunteers - including Emergency Management Victoria volunteers, volunteer school workers and jurors will also be covered, recognising their vital work and unique contribution to the community.

THOSE wishing to access a range of health services in Morwell are now able to do so all under the one roof, with the recent opening of Royal Medical Center.

The new clinic is located at the site of what was Buckley Street Family Practice, with new owner Dr Hiran Rajapakse.

Dr Hiran has wasted little time setting up the practice and said he was excited about what lay ahead.

“I had a vision, I wanted to expand my scope, so this was a golden opportunity to grab,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot of renovations to the existing building, developed new rooms and the whole architecture has changed.”

Dr Hiran purchased the Morwell practice from Dr Chitra Perera, who remains at Royal Medical Center, and has introduced some new services.

“I have brought in other specialties, I have two psychiatrists (Dr Jayani Wickrematunga and Dr Kanishka Muruththettuwegama) working and one general surgeon (Dr Siva Ravindran), a gynaecologist (Dr Abdul-Fauf Oyewale Ibraheem) and two orthopaedic surgeons (Dr Ikram Nizam and Dr Gayan Padmasekara),” he said.

“They (patients) get the ability to see the specialist sooner, as there can be long waiting period to see some of the specialists.

“Anyone that wants to have blood tests can come and have it here and we are also running a skin check clinic.”

Dr Hiran also holds qualifications in sports medicine, and hopes this will alleviate the need for patients to travel long distances to seek treatment.

“You see a lot of sports injuries particularly in the country and you don’t have much access to sports medicine, I thought if I had the special interest and I’m coming from a sports background myself, I’d be able to help out athletes and clubs,” he said.

In another exciting initiative, Royal Medical Center will be offering a 24-hour holter monitor service.

A holter monitor is a battery-operated portable device that measures and records the heart’s electrical activity, with readings uploaded online for a cardiologist to report on.

With the COVID vaccine set to be rolled out, Royal Medical Center is also keen to play its role as it becomes available to clinics.

Sport Australia applications are open now SPORT

SPORT Australia has opened applications for the 2021 Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) Development Grants and Leadership Workshops.

The WLIS Development Grants and Leadership Workshops are part of the broader WLIS program of activities and provide women in the Australian sport industry with opportunities to gain new skills, knowledge, and qualifications to progress on their leadership pathway in the sector.

Managed by Sport Australia in partnership with the Office for Women, the highly regarded WLIS program is now in its 20th year, having provided over 25,000 women in the sports industry with leadership development since 2002.

These grants will enable women working in the sport industry to apply for individual grants up to the value of $10,000 to support their professional development or to attend online leadership workshops.

Organisations will also be invited to apply for leadership development grants up to the value of $20,000 to run workshops, seminars, or conferences for their staff.

“We know that having a greater balance of men and women in executive leadership positions makes sporting organisations more dynamic and well-rounded in the way they conduct their businesses. Having that diversity at a leadership level has a direct impact on engagement in sport and ultimately, positively impacts the bottom line for sports,” Sport Australia acting chief executive officer Rob Dalton said.

“It is vitally important to ensure that our next generation of female sports leaders are provided with genuine development opportunities, which is what this program delivers and why it has been extended and expanded for a four-year cycle.

“Sport Australia is so pleased the Australian Government has acknowledged the importance of the WLIS program with an increased funding commitment of $3.4 million over the next four financial years, ensuring the program can expand and deliver even further development opportunities for women to reach their leadership potential in our industry”.

Heppell bolsters the Parrots ranks for 2021 season

GIPPSLAND FC has two important football development programs for 2021.

The club will deliver a standalone Girls Development Program (GDP) this year.

The programs will be targeted towards players aged 12-16 and tailored towards accelerating skills development and better game understanding.

The programs will be open to all players wishing to develop their football skills further.

Gippsland FC is committed in providing all players, coaches and families an all-inclusive and friendly environment.

The club is also aware the role it plays when supporting community club participation and player retention across the Gippsland region.

Programs will also endeavour to offer players additional practice matches and available girls only tournaments where possible.

With the Women’s World Cup due to be held in Australia/New Zealand in 2023, Gippsland FC recognise the significance of establishing such opportunities and programs leading up to this major event.

Around 12 players from the Leongatha team that played in the 2019 Gippsland League grand final are gone.

Leongatha has, along with Maffra, been the standout team of the last few years, having played in the last five grand finals.

The Parrots genuinely massacred opponents in the back end of the 2019 season, defeating three of the teams that made finals by 121, 114 and 55 points respectively - the latter being in the qualifying final.

All going well the Gippsland League season will commence on Saturday, April 10.

There will be some friendly fire in the Parrots opening game against Traralgon, with former Leongatha player Jake Best now coaching the Maroons.

The local derby between Moe and Morwell will also feature in round one.

Hot, humid conditions test out Traralgon Harriers ATHLETICS

THE Harriers most recent run was over five kilometres at Cochranes Road, Traralgon.

For the third week in a row, the Harriers were racing in humid and uncomfortable conditions.

A total of 63 participants tackled this undulating course, that started with a very steep climb, where runners and walkers alike huffed, puffed and shuffled to make it to the top.

Although it seems these humid conditions suit Glenn Graham who has finished in third place in his last three runs with the Harriers, Dale Murphy has shown consistency with his running, finishing in the top five on several occasions.

The top three male runners for the night were Ryan Wissmer in a smoking time of 18.01, followed by Ian Cornthwaite in 20.29 and not far behind was Glenn Graham with a time of 20.48.

Rounding up the top three females for the night

were Kay Arrowsmith with a speedy time of 24.53, second placed was Kate Mayer with a time of 26.06, closely followed by Bryanna Mifsud in third place with 26.10.

Due to the recent COVID lockdown the Hallora Running Festival has been postponed to December.

Weekend sport set to resume PLAYERS from various codes will be eager to hit the track tonight after restrictions were lifted yesterday.

In cricket circles there was cause for optimism after a memo from Cricket Victoria came through before the Premier’s announcement stating that turf curation could commence immediately as it was deemed ‘essential work’.

The Traralgon and District Cricket Association has not had to change formats, as its fixture has allowed the first day of round 13 action to begin.

Gormandale can potentially take top spot with a big win over Imperials.

The Tigers are currently second on the ladder, three points adrift of Glengarry, and might be entertaining thoughts of an outright win.

Glengarry will want to maintain its ascendancy on the competition when it plays Toongabbie.

The Magpies look to be in ominous touch having won five of their last six games.

Victory could carry different ramifications in the match between Yarram and District and Ex Students.

The Pelicans need to win to make up points to possibly make finals, while Ex Students will want to secure a top two finish to get a home final.

Rovers will be watching this game with interest, as it currently sits inside the top four and between these two teams on the ladder.

First grade players in the Latrobe Valley and District Cricket League will get the coloured pads and white balls out this Saturday, after the first day of LVDCL Round 15 first grade games were scheduled to begin last week.

Premier A top seed Latrobe will take on third-placed Morwell - who have not lost a game since late November.

Churchill and Raiders will clash in a battle that will make the task of qualifying for finals easier for the winner, while Mirboo North and Trafalgar will meet with plenty on the line.

In A Grade, Jeeralang-Boolarra will travel to Traralgon South to take on CATS. CATS can clear the way for Traralgon West to climb into the top four if it defeats the Panthers and the Eagles knock off Moe. Centrals will get to put its feet up with the bye.

In representative cricket, the final of the Under-21 Country Cup that was to have been played last Sunday has been rescheduled to Monday, March 8.

The Luke Henderson-coached Gippsland Pride will take on Barwon in the final, with local players Joel Mitchell and Tom Webster set to play a pivotal role.

All junior representative matches that were to be played last Sunday under the auspices of the Gippsland Cricket League did not go ahead.

A committee will evaluate the feasibility of rescheduling these games or declaring an abandonment.

Those playing basketball have been dealt a cruel hand, as Country Basketball League matches scheduled for the last home and away round this Saturday have coincided with a bye for the Moe Meteors and Churchill Blue Devils.

The timing is absolutely dreadful for Moe, who will go into the men’s and women’s finals series next week without having played a game for an entire fortnight.

West Gippsland bowlers will get back on the green, while tennis players will get to enjoy a hit once more.

Football and netball preseason sessions will resume in the lead up to the season starting in April.

ALL going well, Morwell orwell teenager Luke Couzner will take his bow an nd arrow to Tasmania to compete in the Arch hery Australia National Championships.

Those who have qualified q will be hoping it is not a repeat of la ast year, where the event was postponed due to travel restrictions.

Luke, who calls Tw win City Archers Gippsland (based in n Morwell) home, said he was excited to bee making the trip across Bass Strait.

“I’m looking forwa ard to going to Tasmania and to hopefully gett a medal for Victoria and my club,” he said.

“Last year we cou uldn’t go, so this year it’s been a bit w weird because we weren’t able to shooot a lot last year to get everything donee so we had to get back into the swing g of things, to get all of our muscles back up to where we needed them and just practtise all over again.”

Luke was successsful in getting one of the 10 spots availab ble on the Victorian team, having accum mulated enough points through various field and target events.

Field archery invoolves shooting at targets in a bushlan nd environment, while target archerry is the format most regular patrons wou uld be familiar with, as participants aim att stationary circular targets.

Another form of archery a - clout - requires players too shoot arrows up into the a air and land near flags on the t ground.

As Luke explained, the desirable skills for a c e s included c uded archers the ability to block out any external noise.

“It gets hard someetimes, I’ve had target panic before which is where you are at the bow and you are shaking so much you just ca an’t shoot and it’s a struggle to get back k through,” he said.

“It takes a lot of tiime and practise just to get any skill up so s y j you just need to put the time and efffort in.”

While archery mig ght never quite shake the Rob bin Hood stereotype, competiitions work in a fairly sim mplistic manner, with each archer given a certain amoount of arrows to shoot from m various distances to get thee highest score.

Moving forward, L Luke said

he would like to travel overseas to compete in the sport, although in a bit of an unfortunate circumstance, he won’t be able to shoot at the Olympics y p unless he takes up p shooting g in a style known as recurve .

Recurve bow and arrows are far less l forgiving than the ones Luke curreently und. shoots, which are known as compou “Hopefully I’ll be able to get to the Victorian team for as many years as I can and hopefully go to other places in i the world,” he said.
