Watermark: Members of the Traralgon Men’s Shed, Ex-Students Cricket Club, Traralgon Football Netball Club president Kevin Foley and Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby are hoping for new flood-proof facilities.

CLUBS CALL FOR A HELPING HAND

TRARALGON Recreation Reserve groups are imploring the state and federal governments to kick in some cash towards a $10 million project to help rebound from the devastating June 2021 floods. Latrobe City Council has proposed the plan to build a flood-proof multi-use pavilion at the rec reserve and a new

community hub and events space at Glenview Park. Groups including the Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby (GRRD) were inundated under more than a metre of water causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. GRRD president Bodye Darvill said the Glenview Park hub would provide “one of the best roller derby spaces in Australia”, after the group had faced a

series of setbacks in the past few years. “A dedicated long term home would be life changing. I can’t even describe how good it would be as we had been chasing a home for seven years,” Ms Darvill said. “We know this will flood again, even if we fixed this up again, we just couldn’t do it to ourselves, and after we assessed everything, we made the choice we couldn’t stay here.” The decision comes as many buildings

at the reserve will need demolishing after being covered with inches of sludge and toxic blackwater. The roller derby club had just revamped a former chook shed a couple of years ago after spending $180,000 in state and federal funding on new floor, toilets and a kids space. Continued on page 7
