WHERE’S THE DETAIL? Northe calls on state government to release flood review

By MICHELLE SLATER

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe is calling on the state government to release the details of an after action review into last year’s flooding and storms which inundated Traralgon. Emergency Services commissioner Andrew Crisp had called a review into the failures of the warning systems that were in place amid the June 2021 flood.

It meant locals were told to evacuate after they had been flooded-in, and in some cases after it was too late to leave. The incident review included community interviews and sentiment captured through councils and at Bushfire Recovery Management community meetings. Mr Northe said he understood the findings had been delayed until next month, but hoped it would include

flood mitigation and improved warning systems. He was concerned the current statebased warning system needed more input from local emergency services and incident controllers. “They know the local lay of the land, and it is critical that that advice and knowledge is imparted through an emergency warning system,” Mr Northe said. “Many residents have told me that the

previous local warning system that was enacted when flooding occurred worked very effectively but this was lost when the system became a state warning system. “It is imperative, from my perspective and that of my community, that the legitimate issues that have been raised by the community are acknowledged, considered and acted upon.” Mr Northe also hoped the review would include any medium-to-longer

term flood mitigation measures for Traralgon. Latrobe City had written to the state government and West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to formally request further investigations for flood mitigation in November last year. Continued on page 5
