GP1 63 19 25 MORWELL Catholic Parishes Sacred Heart and St Vincent’s held a joint celebration recently to commemorate their 50th anniversaries. The theme on the celebration logo was ‘celebrating God’s faithfulness’. The event capped off a mountainous deal of preparation for organisers, who were forced to postpone and reschedule many times due to COVID lockdowns and restrictions. Sacred Heart was to celebrate 50 years in 2020, but a decision was made to bring both churches together this year as they are both in the one Parish. The official 50th anniversary for Sacred Heart was November 15, 2020, while St Vincent’s fell on December 19, 2021. Mass was celebrated at St Vincent’s on Saturday, December 18 with Father Jude Pirotta making the journey down from Melbourne to celebrate mass with Morwell parish priest Fr James Fernandez. The occasion was something of a homecoming for Fr Pirotta as he has family ties to Morwell. A social event was held in Kernot Hall following mass. Over 240 people came to enjoy a three course meal, which was highlighted by live music and dancing. The following day, Holy Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart, with Bishop Gregory Bennet and past Parish priests Vicar General Fr. Peter Slater, Fr. Peter Bickley, Fr. James Fernandez and also nine Josephite nuns who played a huge part in both the Catholic schools so many years ago. The church had families who had moved away, visitors from Melbourne, and local parishioners who had both churches close to their hearts come back to celebrate. In addition, many past parishioners who were to frail to travel sent their best wishes and congratulations, notably the Green and Ryan families and Dr Wiseman. A barbecue followed mass at the undercover school grounds with a multicultural program of singing and dancing. Minister puts Gippsland line in too-hard basket: O’Brien
NATIONALS Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien says the state government is consigning Gippsland rail passengers to continued future delays at the same time as its spend-a-thon on city infrastructure reaches epic proportions of waste and mismanagement. Mr O’Brien recently called on the government again to undertake a feasibility study into a dedicated Gippsland line through Melbourne suburbs given ongoing delays and timetable challenges caused by congestion on the tracks shared by Metro and VLine trains. Mr O’Brien said the political response he received from the Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan was a slap in the face for Gippsland rail passengers. “The Minister has responded that a dedicated Gippsland line is “not feasible” and “unachievable” and refuses to even investigate solutions to the problems that plague Gippsland trains,” Mr O’Brien said. “Our trains regularly get stuck behind Metro trains once they hit Pakenham causing enormous issues with punctuality and reliability on our line. “Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo all have a dedicated line completed by the Nationals and Liberals when last in government, but Labor continually turns its back on Gippsland rail users. “At the moment the Andrews government is committing multi-billions of dollars to projects like the Metro Rail Tunnel and the Suburban Rail Loop - and yet it refuses to even consider upgrades for Gippsland passengers. “Even Labor’s much-hyped and long-delayed Gippsland Rail Revival Project is being funded almost entirely by the federal coalition government. “With Jacinta Allan only interested in political comments and failing to consider the need for dedicated Gippsland rail lines, Gippsland commuters are being put in the too-hard basket once again. “What the Minister has effectively acknowledged is that Labor’s poorly planned ‘sky rail’ project with elevated stations along the Pakenham line has effectively precluded any dedicated tracks for Gippsland VLine passengers. “This poor planning is an indictment on the government and will harm Gippsland passengers well into the future.”
Suspected campfire blaze at pine plantation
A CAMPFIRE is believed to be the cause of a fire at the pine plantation on Scrubby Lane, Traralgon on Monday, November 20 at 5.20pm. Smoke was noticed coming from the base of a pine tree in the area, and shortly after Traralgon Country Fire Authority (CFA) attended the scene. The CFA contained the fire to a 30 metre by 50 metre area. After investigation, it was concluded that the fire likely began from a spark from a nearby campfire that had not been extinguished. A sudden gust of wind carried a spark from the fire and ignited the area. Police would like to remind people to ensure any fires that are lit are properly extinguished.
Shed explosion
AN explosion and fire was observed at a residential property backyard shed at Gundaroo Place in Churchill on Friday, November 17 at 5.25pm.
Police Beat
with Alyssa Fritzlaff
A five-year-old was located in possession of a lighter after being left unattended in the shed. It is believed that the explosion occurred as a result of the lighter being used on an aerosol can. The CFA attended and put the fire out. No one was injured. However, there was some minor damage to some personal items in the shed. The child was offered a place in a juvenile fire prevention program, which was accepted.
People evading police intercept
THERE has been a notable increase in people evading police in motor vehicles over the last week. Police want to remind people that in doing so they are causing danger to other motorists, and will face more serious charges for taking measures to evade police intercept.
Extra patrols over the holiday period
POLICE will be continuing extra patrols over the holiday period, both on the roads and at local nightclub precincts. Locals can expect police to be more visible on the roads, and extra drug and alcohol testing to take place. They want to remind motorists to take regular breaks when travelling long distances, and to not take risks on the roads. Be aware of fatigue while driving and drink responsibly.
