THE Morwell ANZ branch on Commercial Road will shut its doors for good on July 23 after being temporarily closed since March.

ANZ district manager Deanna White confirmed the closure with the banking giant experiencing a drop in branch transactions as more customers move to online services.

Ms White said she recognised “the transition will be more challenging for some customers�. “We are writing to customers personally to let them know how we can work with them on alternative banking methods, including online, telephone

and mobile banking,� Ms White told The Express. “We remain committed to our customers in the region and will work with them to make this transition as simple as possible.�

The Traralgon, Moe and Warragul ANZ branches will remain open, and Morwell customer account and BSB numbers will remain the same.

ATMs at the Commercial Road branch were not dispensing cash around lunch time yesterday. “For our business customers we have

relationship bankers that will continue to visit local businesses at their locations and be available on the phone,� Ms White said.

Ms White said the majority of ANZ customers preferred “convenient� banking options, and a number of passbook customers now opting for debit cards. “People are not using branches like they used to, and each year we see a 23 per cent reduction in customer transactions,� she said. “At the same time demand in many of our non-branch roles such as customer

contact centres and the operations team which manages hardship and other enquiries has grown dramatically.�

ANZ is also providing “a range of options� with ongoing talks for the Morwell branch staff. “We will seek to retain as many staff members as possible through helping them move into a range of new roles across ANZ where possible, either supporting customers in other ways or in nearby branches,� Ms White said.

This includes offering voluntary redundancies for eligible employees, with access to career coaching and outplacement support, and its career training fund and past employee fund.

Keep away from Melbourne

LOCAL residents are being told to keep away from the Melbourne metropolitan area and Mitchell Shire unless it is for essential travel.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing warned Gippslanders that police would be vigilant in monitoring people travelling into restricted areas - unless it was for proven permitted reasons.

Ms Shing also encouraged locals to keep observing current levels of COVID19 restrictions and to keep carrying out hygiene practices.

“The virus doesn’t care about the boundaries of regional Victoria and metro Melbourne,” Ms Shing said.

“It’s up to every single person to do their bit and not go out of their way to look for a loophole to head to Melbourne when they don’t need to.”

Ms Shing said Gippslanders could head to Melbourne for work or study - if it was not possible to work or learn from home - attend medical care, or travel for compassionate reasons.

She said transport and supply chains would not be disrupted, and people could head into restricted areas to access necessary goods or services that they could not obtain locally.

Locked down: Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire went into Stage 3 lockdown last night after a record number of coronavirus cases were recorded on Tuesday.

There are only three reasons to cross the border between metropolitan Melbourne and regional areas; shopping for food and essential items, care and caregiving and work or study - if you can’t do it from home.

As of yesterday afternoon Victoria had 134 new cases of coronavirus and the overall total has increased by 118, after 16 cases were reclassified.

Within Victoria, 11 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks and 123 are under investigation.

Metropolitan lockdown is in force for the next six weeks THE Latrobe Valley is exempt from Stage 3 “Stay at Home” restrictions imposed on metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire adopted Stage 3 lockdown for six weeks as of last night.

“Stay at Home” restrictions will remain in force until Wednesday, August 19.

Pubs and restaurants in the lockdown areas will return to takeaway only, but it is business as usual for the Latrobe Valley.

Schools in regional areas will return to face-to-face learning as planned and restrictions in regional Victoria will remain the same.

Year 11, 12 and 10 students doing VCE in metropolitan Melbourne will return to school as normal and younger students will have one week of extra holidays.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the state had “no choice but to take these very difficult steps”.

“We have to be realistic about the circumstances ... we have to be clear with one another that this is not over,” he said.

“There is no alternative, other than thousands of cases, many in hospital and inevitable tragedy.”

Mr Andrews said people can not travel to regional Victoria for exercise and “go for a four-hour hike” or go fishing.

Answers needed on progress of stations

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has renewed calls for the state government to provide answers about the progress of ambulance stations slated for Moe and Morwell.

In September 2018, then Minister for Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy announced the government had secured land on Narracan Drive for the Moe branch, but no official announcement was made for the Morwell branch.

Despite being scheduled for completion late last year, the government confirmed in November they were still in the “planning phase”.

During Question Time on April 1, Mr Northe pressed Ambulance Services Minister Jenny Mikakos for an update on the projects.

But, three months on, he said the government’s failure to provide a response within the required 30-day time-frame was “pretty disrespectful”.

“There were signs erected on Narracan Drive, Moe and English Street, Morwell prior to the election in 2018 ... stating that the stations would be open in 2019, and since that time the signs have been removed and scant information has been provided by the government on the status of the projects,” he said.

“We are really disappointed that there has been little information coming form the government about the projects the lack of communication with the local community and paramedics is pretty disrespectful.

“If they are not going ahead why not just say that. It doesn’t take this long to come up with designs.”

The state government refused to answer why a response hadn’t yet been provided to Mr Northe, and wouldn’t comment on the status of the stations slated for Morwell and Moe, which were announced as part of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 budgets, respectively.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Jenny Mikakos would only confirm “planning is underway on further improvements across our ambulance service including brand new stations for Morwell and Moe”.

Out in the cold after Scope closure

LOCAL families accessing a day program for their children with disabilities have been left out in the cold after a disability organisation shut its Morwell service without consultation.

Morwell’s Elaine Ivory said she felt “aggrieved� after receiving a call in May from disability support service Scope saying they were ending their program at the Ann Street facility.

The Morwell facility, established in 2014 as a respite centre, has ceased operations of its day program, with families advised by management to travel to Warragul.

Ms Ivory, whose daughter Sarah, 23, has complex disabilities and uses a wheelchair, said Scope’s decision disadvantaged its Latrobe Valley clients as some of them have mobility issues and travelling to Warragul would be very difficult.

Sarah has been accessing Scope’s day services for the past five years. “Basically what they do is they have activities that they do everyday - things from swimming, they were accessing community going to the shops (and) they go to the library sometimes,� she said.

Ms Ivory said between six and seven families with an adult child that have disabilities used the service from morning until 3pm on a daily basis.

Yinnar South mother Pauline Couling, whose son James was also accessing Scope, said the travel to Warragul would be too difficult. “It just wouldn’t work for him, it’s too far,� she said.

Ms Ivory told The Express that aside from not consulting families about the program’s closure, Scope also failed to inform them about the date of the cessation of service.

She added there had been no activities at the centre since the end of March because of COVID-19, and that

Mr Northe said he had taken the matter up to Victorian disability minister Luke Donnellan.

Gippsland Disability Advocacy executive officer Adrian Terranova said having a locally based disability service was important for families as travel is a huge barrier in regional towns such as the Latrobe Valley. “For example, Morwell has just one accessible taxi, coupled with the finances and sheer effort required it’s ill conceived to think that this is a viable option (going from the Latrobe Valley to Warragul daily) which would be in excess of 100km round trip daily,� he said. “This decision will not only displace those with disabilities, it will also severely disadvantage families/carers including impacting their current work arrangements. The needs of these young adults with disabilities are greater than young adults of similar ages, that’s what makes this decision by Scope disappointing.�

ENGIE Hazelwood is forging ahead with earthworks through winter with a reduced crew working on mine stability to prepare to start creating a pit lake from January next year.

ENGIE told its stakeholders that bulk earthworks traditionally paused in winter, but this year batter stability and reprofiling works would be carried out in winter. “Stabilising the mine batters and reprofiling them to reduce their incline to a more gradual slope are key work packages required as part of the rehabilitation works to accommodate a future planned lake,� the company said.

“These earthworks form part of the preparation for the initial mine lake filling, which, subject to government approval, is presently targeted to commence in January 2021.�

More than 2.5 million bank cubicmetres of material has been shifted since November last year, making it Hazelwood’s “largest earthworks season to date� employing more than 100 personnel.

HESC trial milestone

THE world’s first HESC coal-to-hydrogen trial has achieved a milestone with the completion of its Japan-based liquefied hydrogen storage and unloading terminal.

The terminal is a key component of the end-to-end supply chain to create liquefied hydrogen in the Latrobe Valley to transport by sea to Japan from the Port of Hastings.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has led construction of the terminal in Kobe, using cryogenic equipment to manufacture a state-of-theart facility incorporating ultra-high thermal insulation storage.

HESC project partner, Iwatani Corporation, will take over operating the terminal.

The terminal completion was commemorated with a small, traditional Japanese ceremony with project partners, local government and local key stakeholders.

Conjecture over signs of the times

A MORWELL man has been left feeling like “a common criminal”, after being fined more than $300 for allegedly dumping illegal waste at a steel recycling facility.

Allan Young said he has been depositing steel at Sledge Hammer Metals for “as long as he can remember” without issue, however recently received an infringement notice from Latrobe City Council.

The notice, issued at 3.33pm on June 10, says Mr Young’s vehicle was observed “via the use of optical surveillance device ... and is connected to the illegal deposit of litter”.

“The litter enforcement officer notes the existence of two prominent signs at the location advising of the use of surveillance equipment and the fact that enforcement of litter offences will take place,” the notice reads.

But Mr Young refutes the claim he littered at the Commerical Road facility and said he only deposited scrap metal.

“I was just dropping off steel because I

wanted to do the right thing and recycle my steel and was slammed with a fine. It makes me feel like a common criminal,” Mr Young said.

“Signage at the business is provided to advise customers that only scrap metal is accepted and penalties apply for the deposit of non-recyclable rubbish.”

The Express understands surveillance cameras at Sledge Hammer Metals were installed between six and eight weeks ago.

“I, like many others, believed the signage and camera later installed by the Latrobe City Council was installed for the purpose of warning people attempting to dump non recyclable rubbish ... which I believe recyclable steel is not,” Mr Young said.

Sledge Hammer Metals owner Tony Di Fresco said he initially believed council installed the cameras in a bid to deter people from dumping rubbish.

“When I saw them putting up the cameras I said ‘that’s good, we get a lot of rubbish dumped here’,” Mr Di Fresco told The Express.

“I didn’t realise they were going to prosecute people for steel.

“From my earlier letters with the council I was told they had fined 72 people in three days.

“I believe people have been putting steel out in good faith to be recycled, we try our best to clean it up during the day but generally it gets cleaned up.

“I believe that the Latrobe City Council is being mischievous in fining people for that, I don’t think they are working in the best interests of the residents.”

Mr Di Fresco said signs at the front of the property, erected by Latrobe City Council to warn customers against illegal dumping, were “ambiguous”.

“We are even working to change the front so that it can assist people to drop their steel in the right place, there’s only so much I can do,” he said.

“They have two little signs that are really ambiguous and a lot of older people come down with a small item and they don’t see them, I have to point it out, but I can’t be there all the time.

“I just feel really bad I won’t to be able

to help people - I don’t want them to be fined for using my business.”

Latrobe City Mayor Dan Clancey said it was “illegal to dump any kind of material” at the site, and doing so was “inconsistent with recent works to beautify the town entrances”.

“While there has been a history of the community taking their scrap metal to the yard and leaving on the roadway and nature strip,” Cr Clancey said.

“The land and roadway are both council owned and there has been significant damage to infrastructure.

“Not only are there ratepayer expenses to remove waste and fix infrastructure, this is not what we want for our town, the wider community and visitors to see.”

But Latrobe City chief executive officer Steven Piasente said “genuine scrap metal” could be taken to the yard “during trading hours”.

“We have been running a social media campaign on our Facebook account to further educate the community, there is no excuse for dumping,” Mr Piasente said.

State comes to party on highway cash

A DECADE after works first began, the Princes Highway duplication between Sale and Traralgon finally has the state funding contribution to be completed.

On Monday, the state government announced it would provide its share of funding, about $50 million, to finish the final two sections of the duplication, at Flynn and Kilmany, by 2024.

The federal government will contribute $202.6 million to complete the duplication on the state government-owned stretch of road.Pre-construction activities are already complete, and construction is expected to begin later this year.

The sections will add an extra 12 kilometres of lane in each direction - to provide a four-lane dual carriageway with a central median east of Sheepwash Creek Rd to west of Flynns Creek Rd and east of Maffra-Rosedale Rd to west of Sale-Cowwarr Rd. The state government said the project will also deliver a range of safety upgrades, including “wider shoulders and a centre median with flexible safety barriers to reduce the risk and severity of run-off road and head-on crashes”.

The total figure for the final two stages of duplication has increased to $253 million - up significantly from the original $165 million cost estimated just two years ago to complete the final stages.

Once the project is complete, the Princes Highway will be fully duplicated over the entire 43km between Traralgon and Sale, improving safety and journey times for the 15,000 motorists who use the stretch of road every day.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said it had been a long fight to secure the funding.

“This is a huge win for Gippsland with a safer and efficient highway directly benefiting local motorists, the transport industry and the travelling public,” he said.

“The project will also support 185 local jobs, which is crucial for helping us bounce back after the drought, bushfires and coronavirus.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack added the funding was part of a $1.5 billion infrastructure package that would fund shovel-ready infrastructure projects and support local jobs immediately.

Speaking more broadly about road and rail projects in Gippsland, Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the state government knew it had been a difficult year for Gippsland communities, but this funding would boost the local economy and create jobs, while building transport infrastructure.

the record, admitting “planning” for the final two stages was underway.

In February, Mr O’Brien pointed out an apple tree was growing and producing fruit in an area that had been previously cleared and fenced off in readiness for the unfinished duplication.

“I’m tempted to harvest some of the apples on this tree and send them to Daniel Andrews as a reminder of his failure to upgrade the roads in our region,” Mr O’Brien said at the time.

Last month, Ms Allan claimed in state parliament the project had failed to proceed because “the $132 million committed by the federal government towards completing the remaining sections of the project are insufficient”.

Mr Chester labelled the comments as “unhinged”, reiterating the federal government’s $132 million was based on the state government-provided cost estimate.

“If there’s been a cost blow-out it’s because we didn’t get the work started in 2018 when the state government failed to provide its 20 per cent,” he said at the time.

Ms Allan responded by explaining she was working with Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing and the Deputy Prime Minister on a plan, with more to say soon.

In several press conferences and interviews, state ministers dodged questions about funding the final two stages, or repeated the government would be prioritising election promises.

Lobbying began, including local, state and federal representation.

The state confirmed $3 million in funding for “planning and pre-construction activities” last June.

The Wellington, East Gippsland and Latrobe City mayors wrote to the federal government last July, wanting the Commonwealth to use its $132 million commitment to fully-fund upgrading the most dangerous section of the road at Kilmany, and pressure the state to finish the final section at Sheepwash Creek, Flynn.

Last October, patch-up works were carried out and signs warning of ‘rough surface ahead’ were erected on the non-duplicated section at Kilmany, as roads workers made repairs to the deteriorating road.

Tempers flared as the Premier refused five requests to meet with Mr Chester to discuss the issue.

Ms Allan was forced to correct herself last November, after initially announcing to parliament the final two stages of the duplication were underway.

Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien said the funding announcement was the culmination of years of hard work and lobbying, and it was a relief to finally get state government funding to finish the duplication.

“Great credit to my colleague Darren Chester and the federal government for leading the way and ultimately embarrassing Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan into stumping up their share,” Mr O’Brien said.

“While it will be great to get the job done, it is incumbent now on the Labor state government to explain why they didn’t fund this project three years ago which has led to an $85million blow-out in costs.”

The first nine sections of the duplication project were funded with $210 million from the federal government and $50 million from the state government.

In May 2018, the state government announced its $132 million share to finish stages 10 and 11.

After stretches in Nambrok and just east of Traralgon were opened in December 2018, works on the duplication came to a grinding halt.

Nationals vow to restore CFA

THE Nationals launched a website on Monday asking for the opinions of regional Victorians regarding the fire service reforms that came into effect on July 1.

Fire Rescue Victoria was launched last week, made up of career CFA firefighters and Melbourne Fire Brigade, leaving the CFA as a volunteer only service.

Nationals leader Peter Walsh said if they were elected in November 2022, the party would introduce legislation to “restore the independence of the CFA” within the first 100 days of government.

The Nationals launched the site www.yoursayonthecfa. com.au to gather volunteer and community input on this legislation.

“Volunteers give up their time generously to keep us safe and they deserve the respect of the Victorian government to make sure that they are supported by a management structure that is in their best interest,” Mr Walsh said during a visit to Morwell.

“We’ll introduce legislation to restore the independence of the CFA by giving it power to select, recruit and manage its own staff who wear the uniform of the CFA.” Mr Walsh also said the Nationals would appoint an independent commissioner for Emergency Services Volunteers with the power to investigate volunteer’s issues and arbitrate results.

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said it would be a “common

sense reform that will bring the CFA together behind our volunteers”.

“I want all our local volunteers in the Latrobe Valley and across Gippsland to know they have the Nationals’ full support,” she said.

CFA Tyers volunteer Peter Harrison expressed concerns about how the new structure will play out.

“There are some operational changes in processes and practices, so if you arrive in a Fire Rescue Victoria area first you take control then when FRV arrive they take control, so you are going to have changes in who is line command and I am concerned that is going to create some confusion and not allow us to actually respond to the best of our abilities,” he said.

“We are concerned about how the connections will be what the line and management structure will be and how we best fit into that.

“Professional firefighters they do things differently at times, we come in as volunteers and do it as best with our skills so there is going to be some variations.

“If that means that they come up with complimentary training they will then ask volunteers to do additional work and that will put more pressure on volunteers and that is putting a lot of stress and pressure on our members.”

He added a website for volunteers to put forward their opinions was a great idea.

“There have been some opportunities to do that in the past, but I think now that it has come into place it will be really good,” he said.

Latrobe City will examine rating system

LATROBE City councillors are looking into a “fairer” rating system for farmers who own agricultural land on the fringe of townships, but are being slugged residential rates.

Councillors are concerned about parcels of englobo land within the municipality - land that has been re-zoned from farmland to residential land, but is still being used for farming.

Latrobe City will ask the valuer general to look at the annual difference in rates as if the land had remained a farm zone, and then calculate the difference in rates for the past 10 years.

Cr Dale Harriman pointed to one local farmer, who had a residential overlay put in their farm 11 years ago, yet the land was not being developed and they were still paying higher rates.

“Our towns will continue to grow and grow, I think it’s important we get on the front foot and have an idea how we deal with englobo land,” Cr Harriman said.

“Particularly when it’s being farmed and continues to be farmed, and can’t be developed at this point in time.”

Cr Darrell White supported the motion, and said there needed to be a “fairer way” for councils to plan residential land into the future.

Cr White said allowing the valuer general to assess parcels of englobo land could be “part of the solution”.

“The dilemma for councils is we need to look ahead, sometimes 10 or 20 years’ land supply for future residential development, the consequence of that has an impact on land next to towns,” Cr White said.

“That land may not ever be used, or it may in five, 10 or 20 years down the track be required depending on the rate of development, and in the meantime there’s a huge impact on the rates it attracts.”

Funding is welcomed by regional publishers

THE federal government has announced 107 regional publishers and broadcasters who applied to the Public Interest News Gathering program will receive a share of $50 million in funding committed to support regional news services in 2020-21.

Communications, Cyber Safety and Arts Minister Paul Fletcher said the funding would support newspaper businesses and commercial broadcasters across regional and remote Australia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are unprecedented circumstances in regional media - with COVID-19 triggering catastrophic drops in advertising revenue leading to many newspapers suspending operations and threatening the sustainability of regional broadcasters,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Morrison government is responding to these exceptional circumstances with this specific and time-limited support measure, designed to assist the continued provision of quality news and information to communities across regional and remote Australia.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Fletcher said the federal government was providing $20 million for television, $18 million for publishing and $12 million for radio, with funding to flow from this month. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Public interest journalism is critical to keeping communities informed,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;PING will provide direct support for the continued provision of local and regional journalism, which has never been more important than in recent times when communities across Australia need access to trusted sources of news and information.â&#x20AC;?

A total of 92 publishers, 13 for radio and five for television were eligible.

Three applicants were successful across two streams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The majority of the publishers receiving grants under this program operate small-to-medium businesses,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Fletcher said.

Country Press Australia president, Bruce Ellen, publisher of The Express and Gippsland Times, welcomed the funding announcement.

However, he said the overall funding outcome had severely disadvantaged regional publishers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reality is, that $38.6 million of the $50 million PING funding in this announcement, had previously been committed and allocated to regional and small publishers as part of the Regional and Small Publishers Innovation fund established in 2018, but never delivered,â&#x20AC;? Mr Ellen said.

Ninety-two regional publishers received a total of $18 million -- less than half the $38.6 million previously committed.

Mr Ellen said of further concern to small independent publishers, was a large publisher group, previously not eligible for funding, appeared to have received a sizeable share of the total. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is not to suggest that large regional publishers, regional television stations (five applicants shared $20 million), or 13 regional radio broadcasters (who shared $13.4 million), are not worthy of support due to the severe impacts of COVID-19 on the media industry generally,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, support for these groups should have been made available with new funding, not from monies previously committed to small and regional publishers.â&#x20AC;?

The cessation of newspaper publishing across regional Queensland and many parts of New South Wales and

South Australia by large media groups highlights the severe difficulties being experienced by news media businesses in the current environment.

Mr Ellen said for the federal government to commit only $11.4 million of new money to support regional media across Australia, while providing $300 million of new money for regional airlines, was difficult to understand.

Mr Fletcher described local papers as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the lifeblood of many towns across Australiaâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They connect communities and keep people informed,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mr Fletcher said successful applicants would put the funding to good use to support a broad range of activities such as staff wages, training and technology upgrades that would â&#x20AC;&#x153;allow them to keep delivering news that local communities need and wantâ&#x20AC;?.

Applications were assessed through a demand driven grant process conducted by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.

In determining funding amounts for each sector, consideration was given to the overall reach of each media sector and revenue used to produce public interest journalism.

The department will work with successful applicants to develop and enter into grant arrangements as soon as possible.

Information on grantees will be published on GrantsConnect at www. grants.gov.au following the execution of grant agreements.

Consistent with the PING guidelines, grants are conditional on publishers of suspended mastheads returning them to operation and recommencing print distribution.

Latrobe City Council has endorsed a fundraising, subscription and partnerships strategy that was developed in conjunction with sports business partners and a project reference group.

Supporters will be offered the chance to purchase an annual subscription, gift cards, become a friend of the Latrobe Creative Precinct, buy a seat or make a voluntary ratepayer contribution.

There will also be corporate sponsorships and a four-tier partnership package, and a philanthropic donations program.

Project reference group member Simon Hemming addressed Latrobe City’s June meeting spruiking the importance of the partnership program.

“Sponsorship and fundraising is an important

aspect for the ongoing support and success of the Latrobe Creative Precinct,” he said.

“It provides a sustainable method to supplement council funding to enhance community engagement and accessibility of the performing arts in the municipality.”

The $38 million stateof-the-art performing arts centre will feature a 750-seat venue, multipurpose meeting rooms, outdoor spaces including an amphitheatre and an underground car park.

The precinct, being constructed on Grey Street and expected to be completed next year, is set to host a range of touring acts as well as local music, comedy and theatre.

Cr Alan McFarlane said developing the sponsorship and partnership strategy had taken time with the input of consultants, council staff and the community.

GORMANDALE author Nancy Phillips has released a romantic novel about nurses based on her many years of experience.

Tales of Top Notch Nurses tells the stories of two female nurses taking the reader through the details of their professional and personal lives.

Ms Phillips said the novel is based on factual depictions of working as a nurse pulled from her long career in the profession.

“I started nursing in 1944 and it was so much different than it is today, it was like a military discipline in those days, you had to be completely

obedient otherwise you would be dismissed,” she said.

“We still wore collars, black stockings during summer, very much in the fashion of the World War I nurses.”

“The value of my nursing training was so far-reaching in my life and as an 18-year-old girl it was very dramatic, it showed me stark real life and it was a shock but the work fulfilled me as well.”

Ms Phillips said she included some of her own experiences in the book but primarily it was a novel following the stories of two heroines.

“I have been shaping the book for some years and included

stories of the people I met, worked for, worked with and nursed. These people made such an immediate impression on me that it had to be put onto paper,” she said.

“In the 70s doctors had no penicillin or antibiotics, they had to diagnose and figure it out from there, the main treatment was bed rest.

“Doctors they didn’t have oxygen, no heart surgery and hardly any blood tests done.

Cancer patients just had to be treated with nursing care, there was no palliative care.

“I think things have improved so much, the thing that should never change is the

patient-nurse relationship. A good nurse gives generous care and support to people as well as the work they do.”

“There was a big difference in the profession when nurses started to train at the universities, they started to have more specialisation, they started to do procedures, (administer) drugs and started doing things that doctors did previously.”

Ms Phillips said Tales of Top Notch Nurses encapsulates this nursing history in a story that still has a romantic, light side and can be purchased from book outlets in Traralgon and online at Amazon.

COVID-19 challenges As we watch the circumstances around COVID-19 evolve, there is a level of stress and anxiety about what that means for each of us. GIPPSLAND Resource Group Inc is dismayed by the item in The Express (June 25, 2020) where Gippsland Water has set the price of water at $2.1198 per kilolitre, and has appropriated outrageous associated costs.

This is an increase of 119 per cent since the 2008-2013 water price determination.

The faceless boardroom members have not consulted with the community, as they did not do for the previous two years, and do not appear to have authorisation from the Essential Services Commission.

It is time for the Water Minister to intervene on behalf of the people of Gippsland.

BEFORE sunrise on Monday, the grass temperature in Washpool, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sunny Queenslandâ&#x20AC;?, was minus 1.7 degrees.

There was no wind or sunshine. Wind turbines were becalmed and not even moonbeams energised our solar panels.

In that still, frosty darkness, green energy failed again. Not a watt came from becalmed wind â&#x20AC;&#x153;farmsâ&#x20AC;? or from subsidised solar panels cluttering many roofs (including ours).

Reliable 24/7 generators provided pre-dawn power-bywire for lights, heaters and coffee before we checked the frosty flats for new-born lambs.

Yet politicians, academics and the UN-ABC-BBC relentlessly push unreliable â&#x20AC;&#x153;greenâ&#x20AC;?energy, promising it will promote global cooling.

They should be careful what they wish for.

Traralgon Rotaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award nomination

THE Rotary Club of Traralgon Central has been nominated for a Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Award for helping out the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needy for the past 25 years.

The club is up for a $2000 community group award for its Give a Damn, Give a Can program in which locals drop tins of food off for Rotary to donate to the Vinnies food bank in Traralgon.

Traralgon Central Rotary community services coordinator Ian Whitehead said the program has been averaging a collection of 10,000 tins a year since the local club kicked it off 25 years ago.

Mr Whitehead said Rotary runs a food drive in which local schools, community groups, sporting clubs and businesses donate tins to be

distributed by Vinnies volunteers.

He said the majority of donations come from local schools, with enough tins to last food bank for about four or five months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a signature project, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a part of a team that runs it, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great end result when you go into the food bank and see what the community has donated, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good feeling,â&#x20AC;? Mr Whitehead said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always people who could do with a helping hand, we get regulars, but also others who need short-term help, they may have lost their job, have family circumstances or a huge bill.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Whitehead said the Latrobe City Trust had been kicking in $4500 towards the running the program of which Rotary was matching the donation dollar-for-dollar.

He said this year, due to the

limitations of coronavirus, Rotary would make a cash donation to Vinnies instead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are some wonderful people in Traralgon who help out, the real heroes are the volunteers at Vinnies, they are there every single day,â&#x20AC;? Mr Whitehead said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rotary is the cavalry coming in once a year to drop the cans off at their door stop.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Whitehead said this was the first year that the Rotary Club of Traralgon Central had been shortlisted for a Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Award. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be shortlisted is a great thing.We do a lot of things quietly under the surface people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about, but this particular program is well recognised outside Rotary,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Funding for Gippsland Line

THE Gippsland Line is expected to be among the winners following a state and federal government commitment of more than $300 million across the state in extra funding for the Regional Rail Revival.

The project will reduce congestion between Pakenham and Traralgon, increasing service reliability in an area that is a major cause of delays for citybound trains.

A contractor will soon be appointed, with construction

expected to begin later this year and targeted for completion in late 2022.

The Regional Rail Revival is tipped to create 1000 jobs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a very difficult year for Gippsland communities - this funding will help to boost the local economy and create jobs while building the transport infrastructure Gippslanders need,â&#x20AC;? Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These important projects will

provide safer, more reliable roads and train services for locals and tourists alike.â&#x20AC;?

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Jane Garrett said the project was a winner for Gippsland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Regional Rail Revival will enhance our regional economies, create local jobs and provide valuable opportunities for local suppliers as the state recovers from the coronavirus pandemic,â&#x20AC;?

The Friends of the Traralgon Courthouse secured a $10,000 grant from the federal government to help fund the project.

Costing a total of $40,000, the kitchenette has additional storage space, a large fridge, serving station, hot water and a microwave, enabling event organisers to easily serve hot and cold drinks and a selection of food. New commercial-grade flooring has been installed and soon new lighting and fresh paint will complete this stage of work.

Friends of the Traralgon Courthouse president David Hackford said the courthouse had been used as a sitting court for the Family Court when on circuit to Gippsland, but had reopened its doors to the community after remaining unused for more than 15 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Significant work has already been done to enable local groups

to commence using this space,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Hackford said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a long-term plan that involves turning the whole building into a community hub with a large, private courtyard that can host regular arts and cultural events, such as exhibitions. It provides a much-needed space for local groups in a unique central setting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The centrepiece of the building is the original court room in which everything was made locally, including the bricks and joinery. Many visitors are quite taken aback when they see the courtroom for the first time.

We aim to restore it to become a space which will continue to serve the community in a new and broader way.â&#x20AC;?

The federal government funding for the courthouse project was part of Gippslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $150,000 allocation from the #lovegippsland Stronger Communities Program.

THE Traralgon Courthouse has embarked on a new chapter in its colourful history, but this time there are no solicitors, prosecutors, magistrates or defendants to be seen anywhere.

The 134-year-old building is gradually being re-purposed to become a welcoming, modern space open for community use by both groups and the public.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester visited the heritage-listed courthouse to see how work had progressed on its latest project: the installation of a small kitchen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The addition of a kitchenette has made the building more user-friendly and widens the range of events that can be hosted here,â&#x20AC;? YEAR 1 students at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, have been learning all about the past and recently spent a day experiencing “School Days of Old”.

With COVID-19 restrictions limiting excursions, the students and teachers became creative and brought the past to life from their very own classrooms.

The day was filled with experiences and activities from a bygone era and included old-fashioned dressups, writing with quills and ink, woodwork and sewing.

They also played games from the olden days such as pick-up sticks and had a lunchtime milk delivery!

The students certainly learned the differences between school today and school in the past.

The students shared their experiences: “I learned that they used to have this hat that you put on and it had a ‘D’ for Dunce which meant ‘stupid person.’

I think it is funny but I am glad it doesn’t happen today because I think it could hurt your feelings,” Neave said.

“I liked making pick-up sticks. This is a game from the olden days,” Leo said.

“I liked writing with ink and quills. They wrote their letters differently in the past,” Elliot said.

“I liked the strict teachers.

In the past if the kids were naughty the teachers would have given them the cane or the strap. I am glad that won’t happen today because it would hurt!,” Abi said.

“I learned that the students weren’t having fun at school in the past. I liked writing with feathers,” Estelle said.

“I liked doing sewing. Only girls did sewing in the past,” Ruby said.

“I liked doing hammering.

We made geo boards. I found out that teachers were strict in the past,” Ollie said.

“I learned how to hammer a nail into wood, and I learned that in the past they used a hammer. Today we have new tools like drills,” Vishvak said.

Traralgon Learn Local is ready for Term 3

TRARALGON Learn Local’s experienced teachers have fast tracked preparations to support adult learners to succeed at employment or further study pathways.

“The teachers were committed to supporting and guiding the Traralgon community into adult learning through flexible and accessible programs during the coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic,” Traralgon Learn Local coordinator Julie Callahan said.

“Operating within the COVID-19 guidelines and with smaller class sizes, the Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House is offering courses such as Transforming Women, Return to Study, Employment in the Food Industry, Introduction to Disability Support Work, Literacy and Numeracy and a large variety of computer courses to suit every need.

“You can even learn how to apply for jobs easily with your smartphone, for those who do not have easy access to a computer. These alternative approaches for pre-accredited courses aim to meet the needs and interests of the local community.

“Learn Local learners are supported to actively participate throughout their training and teachers are keen to make sure Traralgon learners are not disadvantaged by COVID-19.”

Learn Locals offer courses that are designed to help students gain the confidence and skills needed to look for a job or go on to further study.

“We need the community to know the coronavirus hasn’t stopped the Learn Local organisation from operating,” Ms Callahan explained.

“The Traralgon Learn Local has adjusted the learning environment to smaller classes and we are adapting our planning for Term 3 for online learning to cater for demand.

“Learn Local providers throughout Gippsland support learners to undertake pre-employment courses to help you get a job, improve your digital literacy and computer skills, your reading, writing and maths skills, and your financial literacy skills.

They can help you return to study and gain a qualification, and help develop your employability skills.

Those interested in undertaking a course at the Traralgon Learn Local or through one of the 24 Gippsland Learn Locals are invited to contact the organisation directly.

Photography and artwork competition

THE Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve committee of management is holding a photograph and artwork competition for primary and secondary school students.

Students may enter either a photograph of nature taken within the reserve or an artwork inspired by nature within the reserve.

A selection of high quality entries will be used to produce a 2021 calendar featuring the reserve.

The committee has received funding from the CFA and EnergyAustralia to print 1000 copies of the calendar which will be distributed free within the local community.

There are great prizes to be won so get your entries in before the August 31 closing date.

Acapella Festival cancelled

THE Gippsland Acoustic Music Club has decided to cancel the Acapella Festival and all club nights for the rest of 2020.

Regional Arts Victoria and the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres have been doing a great deal of work in getting some

guidelines for venues. At the current time they are too restrictive (and constantly changing) to allow the club to start again.

The GAMC hopes by February that things will be better and life can get back to normal.

The club’s ukulele lessons are also a casualty of COVID19. All participants will be contacted later in the year to see if they are interested in continuing in 2021 and the club will roll over lesson fees.

Short courses on offer

GIPPSLANDERS have the opportunity to use their social distancing time to upskill and retrain during the coronavirus pandemic with a number of short courses on offer as part of the federal government’s Higher Education Relief Package.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is encouraging Gippslanders who want to upskill to sign up to one of Federation University’s new short courses.

“Federation University is offering 11 new short courses in health, education, IT, engineering and environmental studies,” Mr Chester said.

“These short courses have been identified as priority areas where there is a strong demand for more skilled workers.

“This funding package is designed to help people who have lost their job or are looking to retrain.”

The fees for these short courses have been significantly reduced, with the maximum student fee ranging from $1250 to $2500.

Payment can be deferred through HECS-HELP. Students will receive formal recognition on completion of a higher education short course and will be eligible for credit if they want to pursue a university degree.

Courses on offer include: ■ Teaching ■ Information technology ■ Allied health ■ Other health ■ Science ■ Engineering All short courses will be delivered online. Courses begin on July 23 and run through until December 2020.

Free TAFE program expansion

THE state government will expand its Free TAFE program as part of a major new package of investments to boost skills, create jobs and drive the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Training, Skills and Higher Education Minister Gayle Tierney this week announced $163 million in targeted investments that will make it easier for people with pre-existing qualifications to retrain so they can get work in sectors that need more skilled workers.

It includes funding to get more Victorians impacted by coronavirus into training - particularly women and young people - in the second half of this year, for jobs in industries that will drive economic recovery.

The package will create 10,000 more

Free TAFE places, and expand Free TAFE to include new full qualifications linked to jobs and government priorities.

“We’re giving Victorians workers and industry the skills they need to help us rebuild from coronavirus,” Ms Tierney said.

“This package will ensure more Victorians - particularly those hit hard by the pandemic - can get new skills and a good job.”

These qualifications include Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, and Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations.

There is an increased need for the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work because of the impacts of coronavirus and in line with the interim recommendation from the Royal

Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

This week’s announcement will also increase the availability of targeted short courses to support upskilling for existing employees, and help retrenched workers and job seekers join professions where there are jobs available.

This includes the Course in Introduction to the NDIS (skill set), as well as $3.9 million for an additional 11,000 places in accredited short courses and skill sets in construction across TAFE and industry-owned Registered Training Organisations until June 2021.

The state government is also allocating $1.25 million to improve literacy, numeracy and digital skills to help more Victorians progress to further study or employment.

LOCAL families can look forward to a more straightforward school drop-off with the new Trafalgar Primary Early Learning Centre ready to open for Term 3.

Co-located at the Trafalgar Primary School, the new centre will provide up to 132 places for three and four-year-old kindergarten programs.

Councillors, Officers and other key stakeholders recently toured the facility to see the final fit-out of the modular building.

“As the Trafalgar community continues to grow, having a larger facility like this is a great win for local families with the high school, primary school and now the Early Learning Centre all conveniently located together on School Road,” Baw Baw Mayor Danny Goss said.

“We’re also pleased we’ve been able to fund the additional car parking

upgrades to the site and the final elements of the building fit-out that will see this project through to completion.”

The state government provided $1.8 million towards the centre as part of the 2018-2019 Children’s Facilities Capital Program Major Grants.

The project was delivered by the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), with the modular buildings arriving onsite in December 2019.

Council contributed a further $150,000 in funding to construct eight additional car parking spaces and $85,000 towards completing the kindergarten fit-out.

The VSBA has confirmed that the additional car parking works will commence in the next few weeks.

Staff have been moving from the old kindergarten during the term break ready to commence delivery of service from the new building next week.

Woolworths reinstates purchase limits at stores

SUPERMARKETS have again enforced purchase limits following the government’s announcement of “Stay at Home” restrictions commencing across the state last night.

Woolworths reinstated purchase limits on 27 product categories in Victoria in-store and online on Wednesday.

The first purchase limits were introduced on toilet paper and other non-perishables in early March.

Customers will be limited to two items of frozen meat and vegetables, tissues, hand sanitiser and long-life items including flour, dry pasta and eggs.

It also includes fresh items such as sliced bread - from the bakery department, chilled fresh milk, juice and pre-packaged meats which include sausages, burger patties, rissoles and meatballs.

These limits include the current limit

of two packs of toilet paper per customer statewide.

Woolworths said in a statement the limits “follow a surge in demand across Victoria and will help ensure more customers have fair access to fresh food and essentials”.

“We have more than enough stock flowing from our distribution centres into stores to support all our customers’ food and grocery needs. We encourage our customers to continue shopping as they usually would,” they said.

“All Woolworths supermarkets in Victoria will remain open throughout the next six weeks of stage three restrictions just as they did earlier this year.”

Coles supermarkets, Coles Express and Coles Online have implemented purchase limits at stores within the lockdown areas, but not in the Latrobe Valley.

NGFL cancels 2020 junior season FOOTBALL/NETBALL

THE North Gippsland FootballNetball League won’t proceed with junior competitions this year.

A week after opting not to have senior competitions, the league board elected not to go ahead with Under-18s football or Under-17s and Under-15s netball either.

The league had reviewed return to play guidelines, including requirements placed on clubs for training and spectators, with the 10 clubs asked to provide feedback.

NGFNL president David Kyle said with no clear direction provided by the clubs, the decision on returning to play rested with the league board.

“This complex issue has many components which could be argued

with passion in either direction, however in forming our decision we have considered the rationale for abandoning our senior competition, recent COVID-19 trends within Victoria, the state government’s tightening of social distancing policy together with the fact that despite everyone’s best intentions to be fully compliant with return to play policy, COVID-19 pandemic is not age

specific,” Kyle said in a statement.

“Our board’s overarching stance remains firmly focused on the safety and wellbeing of all community members and therefore the NGFNL board’s final decision has been to support the withdrawal and abandonment of all competition, at any level within the NGFNL for season 2020.

“Whilst the board knows full well this decision is not in line with that of other leagues, we equally understand the significance of our junior competition to support and build club success and the value gained by social engagement via sport however in our eyes the ultimate potential risks versus any reward played out significantly in our final decision.”

Traralgon hosts successful set of jumps trials HORSE RACING

TRARALGON Racing Club hosted a successful set of jumping trials last Friday.

Six trials were completed on the day, four hurdle trials and two steeple trials.

Leading stables including the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace partnership, Paddy Payne and Gai Waterhouse had runners make the trip to Glenview Park.

Waterhouse, who trains in partnership with Adrian Bott, would have been heartened by the trial of Northern Voyage, who blew the cobwebs out in winning a 2800m Hurdle Trial.

Northern Voyage actually started his career tackling the Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) as a twoyear-old, but illustrated greater promise as a stayer.

Mark down The Dominator as a jumper to follow after he strolled home in a Steeple Trial (2800m) by 15 lengths.

Champion jumps trainer Eric Musgrove also had runners trialling, including former Chris Waller charge Mazaz.

Mazaz hasn’t quite fired over the jumps yet, but got a confidence boost by winning his 2400m Hurdle Trial.

SALE plays host to a bumper nine-race card today, headlined by the $31,500 CUB Love Your Local Benchmark 78 Handicap (1010m).

Racing is from 12.30pm, with the last at 4.30pm.

MOE Racing Club received 313 nominations for Saturday’s meeting.

Acceptances will be taken today.

Feedback needed from community BASKETBALL

BASKETBALL Victoria is seeking community feedback on a draft report which will provide a clear action plan for Gippsland Elite Pathways and the future of the sport in the region.

It’s part of the Gippsland Basketball Participation and Elite Pathways Project, which is being developed in partnership with GippSport Community Solutions, the Latrobe Valley Authority, Latrobe City Council, Sport and Recreation Victoria and local basketball associations.

Latrobe Valley Authority provided funding for for the development of a Strategic Implementation Plan for an elite pathway model for junior and senior basketball in Gippsland with Latrobe Energy.

“We have considered the existing basketball structure and programs delivered across Gippsland and have found many different options right across the region for everyone to enjoy basketball,” GippSport Community Solutions senior sports consultant Michelle Harris said.

“There is a long and proud history of elite player development and significant depth in the quality and skill level of coaches, referees and administrators.”

GippSport Community Solutions will also host a series of workshops (subject to health advice regarding COVID-19 restrictions) to discuss the draft report before progressing to the next stage of the project.

“This is a fantastic time to review information collected to date and then help the sport move forward over the next five years.”

THE cancellation of the North Gippsland Football-Netball League season has come at a bad time for one club expecting to celebrate a significant milestone in 2020.

Cowwarr was planning on celebrating 125 years of existence.

Cowwarr president Brad Woodall

said the club “had some really big events planned this year”.

“We had a big event planned on a Saturday with a past players football match on the Sunday,” he said.

After the football match on the Sunday, the club was set to unveil the team of the past 125 years, along with teams of the decades.

To add to disappointment, the senior side was also hoping to take another leap in their second year

under coach Jeremy Jones. After improving from two wins in 2018 to seven wins in 2019, Jones was aiming to “break into the top five” in 2020.

“We thought this was a year where we could really progress, we had a couple of nice signings to improve our list, so we were definitely looking at the five as a good possibility,” Woodall said.

Despite the obvious excitement

around the potential return of football and netball, Woodall admitted cancelling the senior season was the right call in the end.

“We looked at the duty of care to our players, supporters and volunteers and the risks for outweighed the season going ahead,” Woodall said.

Woodall said Cowwarr 125-year celebrations were likely to go ahead in 2021.

Membrey’s Saints are flying high FOOTBALL

TRARALGON export Tim Membrey featured as St Kilda defeated Carlton by 18 points last week.

The Saints controlled proceedings from the get-go and despite a last quarter fightback from the Blues, won the clash 11.7 (73) to 8.7 (55).

Membrey again played an important role in the St Kilda attack.

The tall forward finished the game with 10 possessions (seven kicks, three handballs), four marks and 1.1.

Rowell’s injury could open up the door for former Moe player Sam Flanders to make his AFL debut this weekend.

Like Skinner, Flanders was the first emergency for the Suns last week and will be in the selection discussion for the clash with Melbourne.

TOP seed Socrates Tsoronis has held off home court hopeful and second seed Josh Charlton to take out the 2020 Traralgon Serviced Apartments Invitational in a three-set thriller yesterday, 1-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Charlton, fresh off a berth at UTR Pro 2 Series in Melbourne, burst out of the blocks in the opener and steamrolled his way through the Murrumbeena local to take the first set 6-1.

Tsoronis regrouped to take the second set 6-4 to even the ledger at one apiece, before sealing the title with a 10-3 win in the super tiebreak decider.

“It was very tough with the conditions because the balls were a bit heavy and it’s hard to put it through the court,” the 22-year-old said.

“Especially playing Josh (Charlton), he’s just so good at grinding and digging balls out and just playing good tennis, and I just managed to dig out a victory.

It was a very tough day.

“I played really good in some areas and some areas not so good, but a lot of mental strength was there.

“I’ve still be training and managed to get some training done during lockdown, so it’s been fun.”

A raft of local talent hit the courts for the first tournament in months, including Traralgon’s own Ben Grumley (6),

who staved off fellow Latrobe Valley resident Alan Valenzuela in the first round before succumbing to the eventual winner in the second.

Traralgon teen Sam McGregor was out-muscled in the first round, as was Longwarry product Darcy Nicholls, while Inverloch’s Jack Clements (4) made it as far as the second round before being downed by fifth seed Ted Williams in a tight two-setter.

Traralgon Tennis Association head coach Graham Charlton hailed the tournament - which wraps up tomorrow with doubles - a rousing success, particularly given current restrictions.

“It’s been an incredibly strong event, we’ve probably been a little bit surprised at numbers, we thought it might be better but with all the postcodes in lockdown changes, that changed a lot of things,” Charlton said.

“We’re very happy, the weather couldn’t have been happier for the event and all the players a really happy to be playing.

“We really appreciate the support of Traralgon Serviced Apartments, without them ... they came up with $3000 prize money, so this wouldn’t have gone ahead without their sponsorship.

“But at the end of the day it’s just exciting to be using tennis courts again.”

The women’s final was being played at the time of publication.

Back-to-back wins for Gippsland FC Under-16s SOCCER

GIPPSLAND FC’s junior teams were back in action with a National Premier Leagues double-header at Latrobe City Stadium last weekend.

Saturday saw Gippsland host Kingston City, before the home side backed up on Sunday to face Mornington.

Gippsland FC’s Under-16 boys’ team recorded two victories across the weekend, albeit in very different styles.

Saturday resulted in a comfortable 4-0 win against Kingston City, a match highlighted by a brace to Hamish Dastey.

Julian Colantuono and Tanatswa Betera also got their names on the scoresheet for the victors.

On Sunday, Mornington arrived in Morwell without a point to their name for the season so far, but stunned the home side early.

Jakob Markulin slotted the opener in the eighth minute and doubled his side’s advantage just four minutes later.

Captain Joe Stewart halved Gippsland’s deficit in the 15th minute, resulting in a 2-1 scoreline at halftime.

Markulin rounded out his hat-trick and further solidified Mornington’s advantage in the 60th minute.

But the home side would not be denied. Stewart converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 on 66 minutes before Dastey continued on his goalscoring ways.

He too tucked away a penalty for his sixth goal of the season and make it 3-3 at the 70 minute mark.

Gippsland didn’t have to wait too much longer for a fourth as Mornington were stunned by a well-taken goal from Betera, which would ultimately prove the winner.

The two wins lifted Gippsland FC to eighth spot on the NPL South ladder.

Gippsland’s Under-13 boys’ team won a 10-goal thriller against Kingston City on Saturday.

Scores were locked 3-3 at halftime before Gippsland went on with the job in the second-half to record a 6-4 win.

Dugard, Xavier Battista, Corbin Blake and an own goal.

Frost also scored twice on Sunday, but the home side lost to Mornington 4-2.

The Under-14 boys’ went down 3-1 to Kingston City (goalscorer Levi Colantuono) and 2-0 against Mornington.

The Under-15 boys’ played out a 1-1 draw with Kingston City on Saturday (goalscorer Jayden Taylor) and lost 2-0 to Mornington on Sunday.
