INVESTIGATORS have shed more light on the last known movements of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison, with detectives from the Missing Persons Squad declaring they are closing in on those responsible for his death.

On Monday, The Express revealed the 37-year-old was last seen alive with his

green mountain bike on Moe-Walhalla Road in the early hours of April 16.

Detective Sergeant Graham Hamilton said yesterday police now know Mr Lovison met with “an associate�, who is a person of interest, at the Latrobe River bridge around 3am.

Speaking from the Latrobe River bridge, Det Sgt Hamilton confirmed the

associate had not provided police with a full account of their movements after meeting with Mr Lovison. “They have provided the fact they actually met with him, but other than that they have provided very little information,� Det Sgt Hamilton said. “But at this stage we are confident we have some people that may be involved,

however we’re appealing for witnesses to assist us to provide that additional evidence. “We believe we’re very close to achieving a result and finding those responsible for the death of Jarrad Lovison. We believe now that this is the last location he was seen alive.�

Australia posts a record deficit

REACTION has been mixed after the federal budget handed down by treasurer Josh Frydenberg on Tuesday night.

The federal government committed to a record $213.7 billion deficit this year as it looks to spend its way out of the country’s first recession in nearly three decades thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a heavy burden, but a necessary one to responsibly deal with the greatest challenge of our time,” Mr Frydenberg said.

The budget does include tax cuts for the majority of Australians.

The federal government will bring forward Stage 2 of its legislated tax cuts, that see the 19 per cent threshold rise from $37,000 to $45,000 a year and the 32.5 per cent threshold rise from $90,000 to $120,000.

Those people earning $50,000 a year are set to get $1080 back, $90,000 get $1215 back and $120,000 or more get $2565 back.

“Australians will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, generating billions of dollars of economic activity and creating 50,000 new jobs,” Mr Frydenberg said.

The Low and Middle Income Tax Offset will stay for an extra year, meaning eligible individuals will get $1080 and dual income couples get $2160.

If you are on a government payment, you are set to receive an extra $250 payment from December and another $250 payment in March next year.

Businesses have been given incentives to hire young people, particularly during the ages of 16-35.

Mixed reaction: Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the Federal Budget on Tuesday.

A JobMaker hiring credit of $200 per week will be paid for up to 12 months to businesses who hire someone under the age of 30, while it is $100 per week for someone hired between 30 and 35.

For the Latrobe Valley and wider Gippsland region, $70.6 million has been committed to complete the duplication of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale.

A $1.9 billion in low emissions technology includes

$70.2 million for a regional hydrogen export hub and $50 million for a carbon capture and storage pilot program, with the Valley named as a potential location.

The Stronger Communities Program will feature $150,000 to help community organisations undertake small capital projects.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester welcomed the budget’s focus on supporting and creating new jobs, particularly in regional Australia.

“This budget is a plan to deal with the difficult times we are facing as a nation,” Mr Chester said.

“Australia entered the COVID-19 recession in good economic shape and has weathered the crisis better than most comparable countries so far.

“Our tax cuts are putting more money back in the pockets of Gippslanders and two cash payments of $250 each will help pensioners and veterans with the cost of living.”

One Gippsland said the budget included a range of regional recovery initiatives that will allow Gippsland to thrive.

“This budget will ensure we can begin to address the impacts of drought, fires and COVID-19 restrictions and head towards a strong path of recovery,” One Gippsland spokesperson and South Gippsland Shire chief executive officer Kerryn Ellis said.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) welcomed the focus on agriculture.

VFF president David Jochinke said farmers were generally satisfied with key spending commitments to help enable young Australians to work in agriculture and important water infrastructure

spend, but is disappointed the Murray Basin Rail Project has been neglected.

“At a time of great uncertainty and instability across Australia, agriculture continues to be an industry for growth as demonstrated by this commitment in the budget,” he said.

The CFMEU National Construction Division said the budget was a missed opportunity to spark a construction boom in the social and affordable housing Australia desperately needs and does little to support apprentices over the long-term.

“Unions, industry and the community have been calling for investment in social and affordable housing as a powerful stimulus measure that would create tens of thousands of jobs, put money into local communities and begin to address Australia’s affordable housing crisis,” secretary Dave Noonan said.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Paul Guerra said it was a budget that offered hope.

“This is a budget that will reward local businesses for their grit and determination, the ambitious entrepreneurs who have steadfastly stayed the course, and who are all ready to resume when permitted to grow Victorian jobs once again,” he said.

“The Victorian Chamber highlighted three key objectives that we wanted to see in the budget: protecting and growing local business, cementing and improving our global reputation and the next big infrastructure build. We are pleased the government has taken up our recommendations.”

Farmers for Climate Action chief executive officer Wendy Cohen: “A clean, renewables-led

recovery could have put the Australian economy on a more solid and sustainable path to recovery, tackling the pandemic and the rising risks of climate change at the same time.

“The federal government has failed to meet the moment with this budget, with the smattering of climate-smart initiatives swamped by the billions in taxpayers’ subsidies for gas and other fossil fuels.

“It’s not as if they didn’t have good examples to follow.

Earlier this year the EU seized the opportunity, investing more than $800 billion in everything from renewable energy to low-emissions agriculture and electric cars.

“Per capita, that’s almost nine times more than the Australian government proposes to invest in a climatesmart economy.

“FCA welcomes investment in resilience-building under the Future Drought Fund, as well as new Budget initiatives, such as cleaner energy in food manufacturing, rural mental health, incentives for microgrids in farming communities, and new efforts to build a recycling industry.

“All of these initiatives can help rural and regional communities adapt to climate change and prosper in a low-emissions world, but they do not deal with the drivers of climate change.”

“Farmers will no doubt welcome the $50 million in funding for the popular Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme, but for farmers to benefit the Victorian Government must match the federal funding.

“The single most important asset to farmers is water and we’re pleased to see the $2 billion commitment in grants to build new pipelines, weirs and dams.

“Regional communications and connectivity is an essential service and an enormous issue in the country.

“Issues such as lack of phone coverage and internet availability is a big barrier facing modern agriculture that the government must fix.”

Council of Small Business Organisations Australia chief executive officer Peter Strong: “Measures like the temporary loss carry-back, the JobMaker Hiring Credit, and JobTrainer Skills package are very welcome to help keep small businesses afloat and to help them start creating new jobs.

“But despite these measures being massively helpful for small businesses, nothing Government can do replaces customers coming through the front door. We still need Australians to take direct action and GO LOCAL FIRST and support local small businesses.

“Even with all these measures, people still need to walk into their local small businesses, book a local tradie, or make an order online with a local small business.

“What better use of new tax cuts than going local first and spending in a local small business?”

“Economists agree that construction of social and affordable housing would be the best way to stimulate our economy in the wake of coronavirus. It is disappointing that the government’s ideological aversion to social and affordable rental housing has clouded their judgement.”

“While delivering tax cuts and reforms for some industries, Josh Frydenberg has missed the opportunity to end the inequitable application of GST on buildto-rent housing which acts as a significant barrier to

its construction in Australia. The wage subsidy for apprentices announced in the Budget is only available during the first year of the apprenticeship which raises question of whether employers will take on new apprentices without a guarantee of future work.”

“If the government is serious about supporting apprentices in construction they need to change procurement guidelines in the Building Code to require the employment of apprentices on Federal Government funded projects.”

Students show they are up to test

YEAR 11 and 12 students had their masks on and heads down for the GAT yesterday.

The General Achievement Test is usually held earlier in the year and for 2020 graduates will be a contributing factor to the ‘consideration of educational disadvantage’ for their VCE scores.

Kurnai College campus principal Geoff Block said the consideration gave more clout to the outcome of the GAT for students.

“In this particular case its really important that all students do the GAT and do it as well as they can,” he said.

“Because, the score together with teacher judgements of what grades students would have received without COVID-19... what grades they expect and other factors will be put together.

“Students will get a derived score from all of those things, that is why this year in the GAT is a bit of a different process.”

Mr Block said it is harder to prepare students for a test like the GAT. “It’s a very different type of assessment, this year we have tried to give students a bit of a heads up as to what to expect from the GAT because frankly it

can be quite left field ... some students find it very difficult,” he said.

“We have no idea what will be in the GAT but we have tried to give them some strategies about how to approach those questions and the type of question

No active cases across Latrobe

THERE remains no active cases of COVID-19 in the Latrobe Valley.

The last active coronavirus case in the municipality recovered on September 29.

Victoria recorded six new cases yesterday.

Four of yesterday’s new cases were linked to known outbreaks - two linked to the Chadstone Shopping Centre outbreak, one linked to a Dandenong household outbreak and one linked to aged care.

The other two cases remain under investigation.

Two deaths were reported yesterday, a woman aged in her 80s and a man aged in his 90s, lifting the state’s death toll to 809.

The average number of cases diagnosed in the last 14 days (23 Sep 2020 - 06 Oct 2020) for metropolitan Melbourne is 9.9 and regional Victoria is 0.3.

The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.

“I had some technological issues with remote learning, so I did not really like it, the teacher’s faces would freeze all of the time.

“I would prefer to be at school, but we are making it work.”

Chloe also said although this test was over, there were more exams on the horizon.

Man airlifted to hospital after Moe electrocution

A MAN was electrocuted while climbing a power pole in Moe yesterday, resulting in blackouts for some businesses.

Police were called to the scene on Albert Street at 1.20pm, when the man believed to be in his 30s, fell to the ground after touching some of the pole’s wires.

Police told The Express he struck a car as he fell from the pole.

A witness said they saw the man get on top of a box pertruding from the side of the pole.

“Then there was just a fireball and the man was thrown off the pole, pretty far away maybe a couple of metres,” the witness said.

The power was still out at stores along one side of Albert Street and surrounding buildings at 3.30pm and an employee of a store on that street said all the fuses blew in the building.

The man was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital, in Melbourne with serious injuries.

Smiles at school return

THE rain could not dampen the spirits of Liddiard Road Primary School students as they returned to the classrooms on Monday.

Prep to Grade 6 students bounced through the school gates, to see their classmates for the first time in more than two months.

Annelies Agustin, the mother of Prep student Ari, said although she enjoyed remote learning she was keen to get back to normal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ari has been really excited to come back to school we have been counting down the days of holidays until he can return,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He has been missing his friends a lot as well, we had a really positive experience with home schooling and the school has been so supportive, but at home we are no replacement for his friends.â&#x20AC;?

Liddiard Road assistant principal Lisa van Rooy said it was great to have students back on campus. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really terrific, there is nothing like seeing all their smiling faces as they come in the gate.

Lots of them were eager to come back here nice and early and ready to go,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Ms van Rooy said despite the challenges schools have had this year the parents, students and school staff have been able to take it in their stride. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Remote teaching has been a learning experience for the staff as well, especially for some who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been as competent with technology,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But, the teachers have really grown into it and

Police say they are “closing in” Continued from page 1

A witness has reported seeing Mr Lovison standing, with his bike, at the foot of the Latrobe River bridge looking at his phone.

“Obviously when we located him he didn’t have his bike, he also didn’t have his mobile phone, so we’re appealing for any witnesses that might be able to assist,” Det Sgt Hamilton said.

“We believe we has met with someone in the vicinity and we’re hoping that anyone that may have been driving past here may have seen something.

“People may have seen him and not understood the relevance of it. It was in the early hours of April 16, and they may not have paid much attention.

“In relation to the persons that we have spoken to, we would ask that if they have further information we would ask them to come forward and speak to us.”

Mr Lovison’s body was found in a clearing of scrubland at the Moondarra State Park on Tanjil Bren Road, about 18km north of where he was last seen.

His green mountain bike, which is yet to be recovered, was seen propped against a tree on Becks Bridge Road - about 3km from the Latrobe River Bridge - two days after his disappearance.

NEARLY six months since his son’s mysterious death, the father of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison has described life as “living hell”.

John Lovison joined detectives from the Missing Persons Squad on Moe-Wallhalla Road, where the 37-year-old was last seen, and reissued a plea for assistance to help bring those responsible for his death to justice.

“It’s just so hard. It’s been nearly six months and we cry a lot, we scream a lot, we wonder a lot and we’re angry,” Mr Lovison said.

“We just want to know who did this to our son, why? Jarrad wasn’t perfect, but he was a bloody good kid.

“But (he was a) beautiful person, if he had a dollar spare and his friend was broke he’d give it to him.

“He had the right principles, I mean you as parents can’t help who your kids hang around and what they get up to but they don’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve this.”

“We’ve got his dog Slade, and he reminds us every day that ... makes you wonder whether he was laying here and he wasn’t dead and the thing that was going through his head was ‘mum and dad will look after the dog’.”

Mr Lovison said he no longer walked the streets of Newborough for fears those responsible for his son’s death were roaming free in the community.

Howe about now Doherty throws for second stint? hat into the ring

INCUMBENT East Ward councillor Darren Howe has found working with Latrobe City’s smaller community groups the more rewarding aspects of his first term on council.

Cr Howe is backing up for a second term on council as ballot papers are being sent out to residents this week.

“Sitting with community groups or sporting groups and helping to sort out their problems is great, especially when you get good outcomes for them,” Cr Howe said.

“This is very rewarding as these are passionate communities who put in a lot of effort into making their towns great places.”

Cr Howe said he particularly enjoyed working with Tyers and Traralgon South town committees, as well as helping to secure federal funding for a Flynn Hall revamp.

The former Traralgon Chamber of Commerce president said he originally ran for council to go into bat for more car parks in town and help drive economic development for the region.

He came to the Valley with his parents from Adelaide in 1975 and has been running a Traralgonbased newsagency for the past 20 years.

Cr Howe said he found council a “rewarding experience” and wanted to continue the skills he had developed from his first term and see local projects get off the ground.

He said he had worked with the Traralgon Recreation Reserve committee to develop a master plan which could be used to apply for state or federal government funding.

He had been working with the Traralgon Development Association to “neaten up” the central business district and plan some murals around town.

Cr Howe said he was also helping to build a Latrobe Chamber of Commerce to create an overarching body for council to work with and collaborate with state and federal governments.

“We would have one united group across the entire city, and work with the three major chambers

Mr Doherty is running for West Ward, and said he would like to name the region “Latrobe” to give it a single identity and merge it under one available postcode.

“Are we in the Latrobe Valley or in Latrobe City?

Or are we in Moe, Morwell or Churchill? People don’t know what to call us. We don’t have a single identity,” Mr Doherty said.

“It’s time we create an available postcode and rename it Latrobe, people don’t understand how important this is, if you talk to someone outside the area they have no idea where this is.”

Mr Doherty said he also wanted Moe to “come in from the cold” and become part of the same state and federal seats as the rest of Latrobe City Council.

“Moe is sitting out on is own in the state seat of Narracan and federal seat of McMillan, I’d prefer to see one united Latrobe City,” he said.

Mr Doherty said he had been in the Valley for the past 40 years, and was approaching his candidacy with a “strong business and marketing acumen”.

He has been a former Latrobe Valley Express marketing manager, and Moe News founder, as well as Latrobe Valley general manager for Optus.

Mr Doherty is now a Moe business owner hoping to start up a mobile phone provider and establish a call centre in the area.

“The person you are getting is open minded but with a good business sense, council is a big business and it needs to be run as a business,” he said.

“If you watch the pennies, then the pounds will look after themselves, council needs to be aware of what’s being spent and look at improving its business model.”

Gibson eyes fourth term

WEST Ward councillor Sharon Gibson wants to ensure the Latrobe Valley forges ahead with a just transition by encouraging new projects and shoring up tourism opportunities for the region.

Cr Gibson is fronting up for a fourth term on Latrobe City Council after initially wanting to put her hand up to drive change in her local area.

“We had the privatisation of the energy industry, then Hazelwood closed and Yallourn will close, but where is the just transition to go cleaner and greener? There is no talk of it,” Cr Gibson said.

The Newborough resident said she was “trying hard” to get different industries and businesses into the area.

She said she had been working on helping to get a Gippsland motorsport complex off the ground which would include automotive industry research and development being established in the area.

Cr Gibson said there were opportunities in a soon-to-be started mountain bike park that would lure cyclists into the region, as well as working on tourism around Lake Narracan.

“There are untapped tourism benefits at Lake Narracan, if people see this then they will also see that it’s a great place to live,” she said.

“We need to look outside the square, we can diversify into so many different areas if we look.

Especially with these three projects, these are my babies, providing a future of innovation.”

Cr Gibson said she also helped get new facilities for the Moe and District Netball Association as well as pushing for $7.5million in funding for stage two of a Moe Activity Centre Plan.

“If you can have these developments, you can make a difference, and you can change the Valley,” she said.

“You can’t just cut out all the industry and expect miracles to occur, you need to do the right thing by the Valley.”

Cr Gibson said she had gained knowledge and experience in her years on council which she said would be valuable in helping to mentor any newbies elected into their first term.

“There is so much to learn on council, it’s a lot of work to build up relationships and this takes time, and I can help any new councillors as I believe you shouldn’t have politics in local government,” she said.

“You are there for the residents, and you should put the time and effort into it as the people deserve this, you need to give them your best.”

POLICE are appealing for information to help locate missing 14-year-old boy Jye John Hill.

Jye is described as 180cm tall, thin build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.

Jye was reported missing on Thursday, October 1 and is believed to be in the Traralgon or Morwell areas.

Theft from multiple cars

OVERNIGHT on Monday, October 5 a range of property was stolen from several cars on Firmin Street, Traralgon.

Acting Senior Sergeant Cole Shepherd said the string of thefts were a reminder for people to lock

and never leave valuables in their car.

“Anecdotally we have seen that sensor lights on the porch or in the driveway can be very effective deterrents for car thefts,” he said.

“It is a simple, cost effective and prevents these types of crimes, anything you can do to make it a bit harder for someone to break in the better.”

Stolen car set alight

A GREEN Ford sedan was stolen on the night of October 5 on Doolan Street, Morwell.

At 8am the next day CFA and police were called to the same car on fire at the north-east end of Ronald Reserve.

AN 18-year-old Morwell man and 21-year-old Sale woman were charged with numerous offences after allegedly trying to hit a police officer with a stolen car.

On Saturday, October 3, at 11.45pm police went to a Sale address where a stolen sedan was parked at a house.

As a police officer walked toward the car, the man allegedly got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the officer who had to quickly jump and roll out of the way.

The pair will face court at a later date.

Water rebate scheme is extended

A REBATE scheme that helps farmers to secure the water supply on their properties has been extended The federal government has committed another $50 million for the On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme, bringing the total to $100 million being made available.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the scheme provides rebates of up to 25 per cent of eligible infrastructure costs.

“Farmers throughout Gippsland, particularly in the east, have suffered through many years

of drought,” Mr Chester said. “These rebates are capped at $25,000 and can be used for infrastructure projects like drilling new bores, desilting dams and providing more piping for livestock producers and horticulturalists with permanent plantings.

“It is essential that financial support is available so they can make improvements to their properties and improve their drought resilience.

“While there has been welcome rain recently, drought recovery is not a quick process and this rebate scheme will help more farmers to better

prepare for future drought events. It is inevitable that we will experience drought in the future but making these investments now will help lessen the impact on our farmers and agriculture sector.”

Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud said the scheme was extremely popular as it provided much needed assistance to improve water security, productivity and profitability.

“The Commonwealth has stepped up to provide this extra funding to ensure more farmers do not

miss out on this crucial rebate, and I know farmers would welcome state governments also stepping up to co-fund these rebates in order to provide certainty to communities,” Mr Littleproud said.

The On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme is managed by the state government.

Respiratory clinics set to continue

Extension: The Latrobe Respiratory Clinic will continue operating until at least March 30, 2021.

GIPPSLAND’S six Respiratory Clinics will continue operating until March 30, 2021 after the federal government’s Department of Health extended their contracts.

Last month, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, announced funding of more than $2 billion to extend a range of COVID-19 health measures for a further six months, to 31 March 2021, including the GP-led respiratory clinics.

Last week, Gippsland PHN received confirmation from all six regional Respiratory Clinics that they would accept the contract extension because they see these clinics as an important service to the community.

Gippsland PHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch welcomed the extension, saying the clinics had clearly demonstrated the importance of this service to their local communities.

“The coronavirus pandemic has caused extreme anxiety in our community and to know these six clinics provide a safe environment is so important,” Ms Proposch said.

“The clinics provide people who have mild symptoms with a complete respiratory assessment with a doctor or clinic nurse.

“Patients are tested for COVID-19 and assessed for other respiratory illnesses as well as with test results sent back to a person’s doctor.

“All these clinics have shown their ability to be agile and innovative in terms of meeting the high infection control standards and maintaining a reliable service in an ever-changing pandemic environment.”

Latrobe Valley Clinic practice manager Teddy Apostol said although testing numbers had dropped since a peak in July and August, it was important to continue providing this service to the community.

“We know what an anxious time this has been for our local communities and we need to ensure they still have access to this important service,” Mr Apostol said.

“With the easing of restrictions comes the need to monitor any community outbreaks for health officials. This can only be done through extensive testing of people with mild symptoms such as cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell and diarrhoea.

“People can continue to book online, have their test and then stay at home until they get the results within several days.”

A NEW era is beginning at Gippsland Memorial Park, Traralgon with a change of management.

Dennis Seymour, who has worked at Traralgon Cemetery for many years, with the last eleven years as manager, has decided it is time to move on.

During his time managing the cemetery, there has been a great deal of development done and much work on the beautification of the grounds.

In Dennis’ era many areas have been developed.

The Memorial Area was begun in 2015 and completed in 2018, in a prominent part of the cemetery that was not particularly suitable for burials and memorials.

The structures there are very impressive and will continue to house memorials of Emergency Services as well as the Defence Force in the future.

To add a dimension to the burials and use of the Rose Chapel, a Function Centre called the Oak Room was built and has served a need very well.

The Rose Chapel has recently been completely refurbished in colours, furnishings and structure.

While the Rose Chapel was being refurbished, the office area was extended and the office entrance suitably altered. The Crematorium was extended with another cremator added and both maintained to cope with additional services.

Dennis had held Historic Walks and encouraged the cemetery to wholly commemorate Returned Soldiers positions in the cemetery on special days for World War I and Boer War locals.

The information about these is available at the office and can be walked privately.

He has also shown leadership for other Gippsland cemeteries by holding information and trade days.

New areas have been opened up to cover needs, including a specific Muslim area suitable to that community members needs.

Also, a natural burial area has been developed to suit the recently new concept in burials.

The children’s area has been extended and the area around the established children’s graves is about to be refreshed.

All the time the area has been maintained well by staff and contractors under the guidance of Dennis and Sharyn.

In the beginning, Sharyn spent much time in the landscaping and planning of the horticulture as a volunteer.

She was also responsible for the design of the new Butterfly Garden and surrounds.

As the cemetery was continuing to develop over the last few years, she has been employed

RURAL Aid’s popular Community Builders webinar series is featuring two stories of communities mobilising youth during a crisis.

Rural Aid chief executive officer John Warlters said today’s episode (4pm-5pm) looks at ways rural and regional towns and organisations are giving their younger residents a platform to contribute, excel and be proud of their towns.

The free webinars are open to anyone with an interest in the progress of small towns and regional communities.

This week’s guests include Dr Maryann Brown, the CEO of Youthrive Victoria.

The organisation has hundreds of alumni and works to strengthen rural communities by supporting, empowering and developing young people.

UNCLE Bobs Club (UBC) is partnering with Latrobe Regional Hospital to raise $4500 for a new vitals monitoring device as part of the club’s Local Giving for Local Health program.

From now until November 5, the community will be able to donate online via mycause.com. au/latrobe in a Virtual Wheelbarrow Push or can contact Tyers Group Secretary on 5174 5360.

A map on the UBC website will track money raised with distance travelled around the region.

The Wheelbarrow Push is a proud part of UBC’s 78-year fundraising history, and is part of the Good Friday Appeal efforts each year.

Latrobe Regional Hospital will purchase a Masimo RAD 97.

The device will monitor oxygen, blood flow, blood pressure and pulse rate for pediatric patients, giving medical staff more time to focus on patient care.

In 2019-20, the hospital saw a record 42,106 patients through their emergency department.

8489 of those patients were paediatric.

When the fundraising campaign ends on November 5, 2020, any additional funds raised will go to the hospital.

To give the community a chance to fundraise online when in-person activities are not possible, UBC is holding a Virtual Wheelbarrow Push as part of the club’s commitment to Local Giving for Local Health.

The goal is to purchase a vitals monitoring device for paediatric patients.

Electoral commissioner Warwick Gately is encouraging people to vote as early as possible.

“With the election being conducted by post, voters must complete and return their ballot material as soon as possible to make sure their vote counts,” Mr Gately said.

Ballot papers must be in the mail or handdelivered to the Election Manager by 6pm Friday, October 23.

Voters are advised to check their local mail clearance times.

RACV and Orygen partner to help young regional Victorians

YOUNG people with mental ill-health, who live in regional Victoria, will be supported to achieve their education and employment goals thanks to a new three-year partnership between youth mental health organisation Orygen and the RACV. The partnership will also establish a Youth Individual Placement and Support Centre of Excellence at Orygen, which will expand and drive the implementation of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programs for young people at sites across regional Victoria.

Under the IPS model, education and employment services are embedded alongside clinical practice within youth mental health services. Orygen research has demonstrated this can dramatically improve employment success rates, with young people participating in IPS programs being up to three times more likely to achieve employment outcomes than those participating in other employment support programs.

Orygen’s associate director of employment and education partnerships Gina Chinnery said IPS was the most evidence-based and effective form of employment support for people experiencing serious mental illness, but was out of reach for many young Australians.

“We are very excited to partner with RACV to launch our youth IPS Centre of Excellence to

RACV’s general manager of Social Impact and Corporate Communications, Louise Steinfort, said the Orygen partnership would help young Victorians negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of mental health support and employment opportunities.

“There has been significant disruption to the lives of young people caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting the mental health and wellbeing of many young Victorians. RACV recognises the need for more mental health services in regional Victoria that support young people and that’s why we’ve partnered with Orygen,” Ms Steinfort said.

“We have a responsibility, now more than ever during the COVID-19 crisis, to support young people experiencing mental-ill health. This partnership with Orygen aims to expand services and support young people who are experiencing mental ill-health, with finding employment and educational opportunities.”

Penelope, a young person who has found employment through an IPS program, said before she joined the program she was incredibly stressed out about many things that were happening in her life, and they all related to finances.

“I now have two jobs that help me support myself as well as my family members. I am grateful for the support I have received from this program,” Penelope said.

Ms Chinnery said the first youth IPS site in regional Victoria was expected to come on line in early 2021, to support young people experiencing mental illness find employment or continue their studies.

“Our research tells us that young people with mental ill-health have the same aspirations as other young people - they want to work and study,” she said.

“This World Sight Day,Vision Initiative is encouraging everyone to not lose sight of their vision - even during the pandemic,’’ Vision Initiative program manager Jackie Barry said.

“If you notice any changes in your vision, don’t delay seeking treatment. Most vision loss is preventable or treatable if it’s detected early, so book an eye test as soon as you can.”

“It’s also really important for anyone who has an existing eye condition to maintain their treatment.”

“While 2020 has been a challenging year for Victorians’ health, optometrists and other eye health professionals are open and continuing to offer care to people who need it.”

The good news is around 90 per cent of vision

loss is avoidable or treatable, if it’s identified early.

Eye tests can be arranged directly with an optometrist without the need for a referral from a GP and are usually covered by Medicare.

The Vision Initiative is also reminding all Victorians with an existing eye condition that it’s important for them to continue their treatment, even during the lockdown period.

LOCAL MP Darren Chester is urging keen photographers to get out and about in Gippsland to capture a great photo for inclusion in his 2021 #lovegippsland calendar.

Mr Chester said the relaxation of coronavirus travel restrictions meant there was no reason why locals couldn’t now get outside with their camera to capture the beauty of Gippsland.

“Spring is a wonderful time in our region: the weather is warming up and the natural world is waking up after a long, cold winter,” he said.

“This is the perfect time to get out with your camera and have a look at our beautiful part of Australia in a new light. It’s a great opportunity to explore this year’s photo competition theme, The Colours of Gippsland.”

Council contender’s view on plant

AS a proposed councillor for the upcoming elections, I am confused as to why certain councillors have voted against the battery recycling facility.

It will attract 350-400 jobs in manufacturing and recycling, employing 68 when up and running.

It has also been said, that people have been ‘spooked’; while the EPA rated it up to 30 times below its standards, we need to remember, we are not only bound to legally follow Australian standards, but the constant monitoring by not only the EPA, but parties like WorkSafe.

While I am concerned for the wellbeing of the local people and fully understand their worry of emissions, I have spoken to other political groups and surprisingly, are all OK with it.

In fairness to all opinion, this facility could lead to another 5-10 companies investing in the area.

The companies mean $40-50 million in investment, bringing with it, a possible plastic recycling facility for example.

Too long have l watched opportunity such as this gone begging, because of either ideology, or public misunderstanding.

These seemingly flippant decisions, raises second thoughts for other companies’ confidence in investment, which in turn disintegrates regional development.

Opal for example has more grand plans, other than burning waste?

The said councillors have spoken of transition, but have towed this line, which subsequently has now given the public less say/scrutiny over the proposal, which was part of the original agreement.

And back to my prior point, I hear Geelong Council have already come knocking on hearing of the decision.

The gospel according to Dan

FOR the past eight months every day Premier Dan has delivered his fearmongering sermons (oops, I mean press conference) to a largely believing and gullible congregation (oops, I mean media) breathlessly announcing the latest number of coronavirus cases and deaths.

While all lives matter, the fact is the majority of deaths from COVID are overwhelmingly the elderly (the average age is 83) - and a few “very rare” cases of younger people with underlying health issues, what I would like to know is are Victorians dying “from” the virus - or “with” it?

Tightening the lens to a sharper focus, all Victorian GPs have been strictly directed by the Department of Health & Human Services (formerly known as the utterly discredited Community Services) to “assume” that any death displaying typical COVID-19 symptoms (which are effectively indistinguishable from the flu or common cold) should be recorded on the death certificate as “died from COVID-19.”

As a consequence, COVID-19 deaths have not only been wildly inflated, but the mysterious and unprecedented absence of flu deaths in Victoria this year is clearly accounted for.

Water bills too high

HAVE you ever wondered why as a Gippslander we pay some of the highest water rates in this state?

Maybe this time around it has to do with Gippsland Water, forking out in excess of $30,000 on Christmas hampers for their staff this year when so many people have been doing it tough and not working due to COVID-19.

While we have all tried to continue working for the last six months, to lash $30,000 out on staff as a Christmas bonus slaps us all in the face and is just another reminder why we all pay more to dispose of our wastewater etc.

I ask Gippsland Water’s managing director Sarah Cumming is it fair to have a spend up using our water rates money at Christmas when so many of us have just been grateful to continue working, although at a reduced capacity and so many other people through no fault of their own haven’t worked at all?

First I was told that there was only one person working that I could talk to however that person wasn’t available until after 11.30am.

It has to be paid for somehow. Volunteers are vital. They actually keep the costs down. And they are just as capable as permanent fire fighters, probably more so in some cases.

Third call this person was still not available and fourth call I was told they were in a meeting but someone would get back to me within 48 hours.

I quoted my reference number only to be told it was incorrect.

I have heard nothing back.

Many employees are working from home during this pandemic including government workers, however, there is something amiss with Latrobe City.

I have been in contact with other businesses that have all been working from home and all were easily accessible but this has not been the case with Latrobe City.

The state government is in total disarray and it appears Latrobe City is no better.

Don’t expect us to do the right thing when Latrobe City can’t do the right thing by us.

What’s the alternative?

THE Spanish Flu killed about 49,000 Australians of all ages after the First World War. It took about three or four years to finally disappear.

No vaccine was produced.

People simply wore face masks and socially distanced for those four long years.

Perhaps herd immunity had something to do with it as well.

Those people who criticise the state government need to realise that there is no alternative to following the best scientific advice.

So when I received an unsolicited email from the local National Party branch asking me to click to state no-confidence in Daniel Andrews, I politely declined. Others I know, were less polite.

However, I did suggest via return email a reading and media watch list for them, including Superpower by Ross Garnaut, the film The Social Dilemma and the documentary The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty and to check out the website Renew Economy.

that it is cooperation that will get us through this and into a better economy afterwards, is if they drop their “born to rule attitude”.

Just white-anting the elected government of the day is divisive and designed for one thing only.

To sow dissatisfaction and bully their way back into government.

A hope councillors step it up

TUNING in to the World this Week on Gippsland FM (Saturday, October 3), show hosts interviewed candidates and incumbents for the West Ward in Latrobe City.

To speak plainly, I was in utter disbelief with what I heard. Responses were the same circular narrative that has been commonplace this last decade or more: clean coal, energy projects, tourism hopes, and the woes of privatisation.

So while we are talking about maybe one day digging up coal and turning it into hydrogen and burying the emissions in the ground, oil giants such as BP and Shell are investing heavily in renewable hydrogen.

The Asia Renewable Energy Hub is a $30 billion project underway in the Pilbara, upscaled from 9 Gigawatt to 11GW, and now at 15GW - backed by investment giant Macquarie Group.

Councillor hopefuls recited how great Latrobe City is, and then rattled off how we are extremely close to everywhere else.

It’s reminiscent of how council has repeatedly promoted Walhalla as a fantastic destination. The same Walhalla that is in the neighbouring Baw Baw Shire.

If council was serious about tourism, they would undertake projects like connecting the Yallourn North community to the Moe-Yallourn Rail Trail; the same sort of projects that neighbouring Wellington Shire has spent millions on over the last couple of decades.

The only real sense spoken was from one candidate about: ‘value adding’ for our producers and manufacturers; about building our own economy without begging for government handouts; and

the importance of our strong small business sector.

Small businesses, with less than 20 employees, make up 98 per cent of all businesses, and employ 44 per cent of the country’s workforce.

All of the candidates championed the environment, as if somehow looking after the only planet we have is some sort of revelation.

I have been actively involved in community affairs within the city this last decade.

It’s worth noting that only one councillor has ever bothered to approach me in that time, instead of the other way around. I wish all potential candidates the best for this election, but I sure hope they all step it up. Our future depends on it.

Displeasing responses

IN The Express on September 24, 2020 there was a Q&A where the general public had a chance to ask our wonderful local MP’s any questions we may have regarding the pandemic.

I was thankful that they would find time in their schedules to answer any concerning question we may have.

My question was one of the many to be chosen to be answered and published. But upon reading it, all I was left with was a displeasing taste in my mouth.

The answers to our questions did not portray a response from our local MPs but in fact were inhuman, robotic and generic.

It was nothing more than paraphrasing our Victorian Premier or commenting on his action plan. I was unaware that the job description of local government was as simple as printing your face all over town during an election and paraphrasing a member of higher government when talking to the community.

I’d like to remind our local members that we are the Latrobe Valley. Be straight with us.

If we have concerns, answer them using your own words. Don’t paraphrase a higher tier government.

We can read that rubbish on social media.

I hope our local MPs will take the time to humour me and have another go at answering the general public’s concerns but this time with your own words.

Carbon farming must triple

WE recently concluded the fourth National Carbon Farming Forum with a real sense of excitement for what this growing industry can deliver for jobs, investment, and growth in regional communities.

Now eight years old with over 650 carbon farming projects around Australia, we need to at least triple the industry and its regional contributions by 2030 to help keep global warming to the goals of the Paris Agreement.

There are different methodologies, but farmers earn carbon money by managing trees, vegetation, fire, soil and livestock differently, storing carbon in the land or avoiding emissions.

Carbon farming helps address climate change but there are many other benefits and provides an additional revenue stream for land managers and can help build resilience and sustainability keeping farmers on country and employing others.

Recent federal and state government initiatives are assisting the growth of this important industry.

Developments include the federal government announcing funding towards improving soil carbon measurement technology and the establishment of a carbon farming methodology steering committee, involving the CMI, designed to develop new methodologies, within quicker timeframes.

The CMI is committed to assisting the development of carbon farming so it benefits land managers, communities and the climate.

It is right time for equality on local councils VOTERS across Gippsland are being urged to consider gender equality when casting their ballots in council elections this month.

Local community group Women in Gippsland is advocating for the election of more women to local government across the region.

Women in Gippsland co-founder, Kerry Wilson, said a greater representation of women on councils would better reflect the communities they serve.

“We are delighted to see 41 women standing for councils across Gippsland which is 44 per cent of all candidates,” Ms Wilson said.

“Our hope is that this translates into more women being elected to the roles to provide a truer representation of our communities.”

According to Ms Wilson, in 2016 just one in four Gippsland councillors was a woman, significantly below the state-wide average of 38 per cent.

“We have a real chance in 2020 to lead the way and achieve parity around the chambers of Baw Baw, Latrobe,Wellington, East Gippsland and Bass Coast shires but we need voters’ help by supporting our female candidates,” Ms Wilson said.

“To have 50 per cent of all councillors across Gippsland being women would be an important step for all those who seek gender equality, and fairness and inclusion for women and girls.

“In the words of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, ‘Women belong in all places where decisions are made’.

“When you complete your postal vote, we invite you to support a future where women take their rightful place at the council table.” *South Gippsland Shire will hold its elections in 2021.

ExxonMobil’s scaling down AT least 150 ExxonMobil employees are understood to have taken voluntary redundancy packages across Australia, with more waiting to see if their applications have been successful.

Dozens of workers had their last day with ExxonMobil last Wednesday, some having worked for the company for decades.

The company told workers on September 2 that it was beginning a voluntary redundancy program for its Australian employees.

In a statement, the company said the decision to offer voluntary redundancies followed an extensive review of its current and future project work.

Employees in Melbourne, Gippsland, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth who elected to take part in the voluntary program were asked to offer expressions of interest through September.

The shock announcement sent employees scrambling to work out their possible redundancy pay-outs, checking their superannuation entitlements and seeking financial advice.

The short timeline between the offer of redundancy packages and work finishing up has fuelled speculation amongst employees that ExxonMobil has a buyer for its Australian operations, but the company has rejected that.

An ExxonMobil spokesperson said the company was “testing market interest” for a number of assets worldwide, including its operated producing assets in Australia, as part of an ongoing evaluation of its assets.

“We are providing information to third parties that may have an interest in these assets, but no agreements have been reached and no buyer has been identified,” the spokesperson said.

“ExxonMobil continually reviews its assets for their contribution toward meeting the company’s operating needs, financial objectives and their potential value to others.

“Operations will continue as normal throughout the effort to sell the assets.

“Our priorities continue to be effectively meeting the expectations of our customers, employees and business partners, while maintaining a consistent focus on safe and efficient operations.”

Given the uncertainties with ExxonMobil assets on the market, it is understood interest in the redundancy program has been strong, particularly among long-time employees who have qualified for the maximum 52 weeks of redundancy pay.

ExxonMobil has not responded to questions from The Express relating to how many of its employees it wants to shed, or how many people have applied for or accepted redundancies.

However, it is believed dozens of contractors have recently lost their jobs as part of the downsizing of the workforce.

ExxonMobil says employees who participate in the voluntary redundancy program will be provided with company support, including outplacement services.

MORE than 240 Gippslanders took to social media on Saturday asking Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester and Federal Member for McMillan Russell Broadbent to speak up on climate change.

The action was run by Extinction Rebellion with affiliated environment groups targeting the two federal members with the hashtag #act4climategippsland.

Baw Baw Sustainability Network member Malcolm McKelvie said it was time for both Mr Chester and Mr Broadbent to “face up to the climate emergency”.

“We have simple, clear demands: tell the truth about the climate emergency and take action to prevent the worst of it happening,” Mr McKelvie said.

Mr McKelvie said both MPs will be invited to an online community forum to discuss their stance on climate change issues and answer questions.

“Supporting a gas led recovery, or any fossil fuel use at a time when we must do all we can to keep them in the ground is a crazy response to the current situation,” Mr McKelvie said.

“It is even more silly when compared to the opportunity Australia has to become a renewable energy superpower which will drive greater profits and jobs creation long into the future, at cheaper cost than fossil fuel mining”.

Mr Chester said the federal government, in partnership with industry and the community, had invested $35 billion in renewable energy

over the past five years. However, he said that Australia contributes less than two per cent to total global emissions and the Latrobe Valley provides the majority of Victoria’s energy needs and will continue to offer baseload reliability for the foreseeable future.

“Australians can be proud of the fact that we have supported international agreements, we have beaten our 2020 emissions reduction target, and are on track to beat our 2030 target,” Mr Chester said.

“Australians want reliable, affordable energy and practical environmental action. It’s shouldn’t be an ‘all or nothing’ argument and that’s why we will continue to have a mix of energy sources and invest in new technology to create new jobs.”

Financial hardship payment to double

THE state government is doubling an assistance payment for those experiencing significant financial hardship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, as part of a $50 million program to make sure people are not falling through the cracks.

The state government has commissioned the Red Cross to provide financial assistance, information and referrals to those doing it tough during the pandemic who are not eligible for Commonwealth support or the International Student Emergency Relief Fund.

People living in Victoria with limited income or savings who are on temporary or provisional visas and undocumented migrants are now able to apply for a payment of up to $800 per person - helping them out with living expenses while things are tough.

Those who have already received a payment under the program will be eligible for a $400 top up on their original payment.

“This virus doesn’t discriminate, but its effects are felt more harshly by the most vulnerable among us - those without savings or work who are experiencing extreme hardship,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“Whether it’s making sure getting tested doesn’t mean missing payday or support for those doing it really tough we are acting to look after all Victorians during this crisis.”

Families may be eligible for more, depending on how many people are in the family and their individual circumstances. Payments begin to flow within five days of a correctly completed application being received. Applicants may be eligible for an additional payment after eight weeks if they are continuing to experience financial hardship.

The Brotherhood of St Laurence is working with community organisations to identify people who may be eligible and support them to apply.

The vital program has already delivered 6588

Extreme Hardship Support Program payments, worth over $3.3 million, supporting 8,341 individuals.

The program has also connected around 20,000 people with other state government supports, including rent relief, international student support, local food relief services, health protection advice and mental health support.

The Extreme Hardship payment builds on other state government announcements to support the vulnerable during this global crisis, including the $45 million International Student Emergency Relief Fund.

Frustration over COVID-19 restrictions

RESIDENTS of the Gippsland South electorate are frustrated at the ongoing harshness of COVID restrictions, despite zero active cases in the region, according to a local MP. Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien has undertaken a series of informal listening posts across the electorate in the past week, receiving a huge volume of feedback from people on the street.

Mr O’Brien has conducted ‘listening posts’ in Sale, Rosedale, Loch Sport, Mirboo North, Leongatha, Korumburra, Foster and Yarram as well as visits to Yanakie, Fish Creek, Toora and Welshpool.

“The overwhelming question and message I’m getting is frustration from people about the ongoing restrictions for regional Victoria despite our low or non-existent COVID case numbers,” he said.

“While some people are cautious and happy for the rules to remain conservative, most people are questioning me on why the state government is tying regional Victoria to Melbourne, and about the contradictory nature of many of the restrictions.

“There is concern among many locals that our local businesses are still hampered, particularly pubs, cafés and restaurants, which have had a devastating year after bushfires and COVID, and are heavily restricted with only 10 people per area able to be served indoors at any time.

“The highly variable spring weather has highlighted that alfresco dining outdoors is rarely suitable for most of our Gippsland businesses.”

Mr O’Brien said there was also concern about dance schools, gyms, gymnastics and other businesses and facilities that remain closed.

“For example, I’ve had a number of groups asking about whether they can hold meetings, such as CWA branches and family history groups. And while the answer in their own facility is ‘no’, they are able to book a table at a local pub or restaurant.

“These contradictions don’t make much sense.”

Mr O’Brien said the second most raised issue was the compulsory wearing of masks.

“People are very frustrated and many of them

struggle wearing masks and are worried about the warmer weather coming up,” he said.

“I believe masks are the cheapest and easiest thing we can do, but they should be restricted to indoors and high-risk situations like supermarkets and crowded areas.

“It makes little sense to enforce the wearing of masks when people are out and about on their own working or walking.”

Mr O’Brien said a number of other local issues were raised as well as broader concerns such as action on climate change, local jobs and support for the tourism sector.

“I’ll be following up a number of these and continuing to press for more sensible yet safe restrictions for Gippsland as we come out of the COVID second wave,” he said.

“I’ll also continue to hold local listening posts to hear from my constituents as the year progresses.”

HORSE RACING: The Caulfield Cup dream remains well and truly alive for star Latrobe Valley galloper Levendi.

The 2018 ATC Derby champion has been nominated for Sunday’s Cranbourne Cup (2025m), a race that has been used as a springboard for Caulfield Cup contenders in past years.

None more famous than Barbaricus, who after running second in the 2008 Cranbourne Cup, finished a brave third at bolter’s odds in that year’s Caulfield Cup. Trainer Peter Gelagotis is no stranger to winning the Cranbourne Cup, having prepared Mourinho to success in 2014.

Following the second declaration of acceptances on Tuesday, Levendi is now 27th on the Order of Entry for the $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17.

The final Caulfield Cup field consists of 18 acceptances and four emergencies.

Levendi’s most recent run came when a solid third behind Al Galayel in the Group 3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on September 25.

He has been allocated a weight of 53.5kg for the Caulfield Cup by chief handicapper Greg Carpenter.

The final declaration of acceptances is at 4.30pm on Wednesday, October 14.

Mornington win at 50-1 odds the previous start was no fluke, holding off Unlimited Ability by half a length.

Xuereb’s day got even better when Memphis Squaw landed a deserved win in the MC Traffic Rating 58 Handicap (1100m).

The mare had been racing well without quite landing a telling blow; that was until a gem of a ride from boom apprentice Madison Lloyd.

Memphis Squaw ($3.70 into $2.90) enjoyed an economical run in transit and denied

Black Sea in a slugging finish by a nose.

The win was the second from 29 starts for the daughter of Squamosa, who won her maiden at Moe in September 2018.

In addition to the double, the form of horses such as Without Excuse, a runner-up in her past two appearances at Moe and Solitary Tramp, who ran an eye-catching fourth behind Preliminaires at Moe on September 28, would be pleasing Xuereb.

Both horses have accepted for today’s Mornington meeting.

Bennett soaks up a Moonee Valley win HORSE RACING

MOE trainer Allison Bennett enjoyed her first Moonee Valley success in 11 years when Monmouth prevailed in the Zig Inge AM Benchmark 78 Handicap (3000m) last Friday night.

The former Tasmanian produced a fine performance to take out the $50,000 event by a commanding 2 ¼ length margin.

The victory under the lights was Bennett’s first at the Valley since Classicarl on April 9, 2009.

“It’s been a while,” Bennett said post-race.

“He is owned by Edwin Batt and his lovely wife Martine in Tasmania and I’ve known Edwin forever.

“He rang me up one day and said ‘can you have a look at my horse tonight and let me know if you think he will win a 58 in Gippsland because I can’t find a race for him over here.

“I watched the race, I said send him, but don’t send the jockey.”

Since joining Bennett’s stable, Monmouth has been a model of consistency.

In 16 runs, the son of Pendragon has run outside the

top four just twice, banking connections more than $120,000, a streak highlighted by wins at Geelong (twice), Yarra Valley and now Moonee Valley.

“He’s an absolute delight, he’s the most beautiful horse you could ever get,” Bennett said.

“Every morning he’s over the box and saying what are we doing today.

“He goes on the track (for work) maybe once a month, he goes up to the bush, out to the paddock for three to four days after every run.

“He’s a racehorse and he loves it.”

Monmouth was ridden by apprentice jockey Teo Nugent, who spoke of his delight at combining with Bennett for a metropolitan winner.

“It is unreal to get a winner for Allison, she’s supported me since I was claiming 4kg in the country,” Nugent said.

“We’ve had a couple of seconds, but to get a winner for her was great.

“He’s a tough horse alright, he was in for the fight, I thought the track might be a bit firm for him tonight, but he’s got the heart of a lion.”

Vogt now a Saint FOOTBALL: Traralgon export Jacqui Vogt was selected at pick 40 in the AFLW draft on Tuesday night.

Vogt, who has spent the past two seasons playing with the Southern Saints boasts an outstanding sporting pedigree.

The 26-year-old played five W-League games for Melbourne Victory as a defender between 2010 and 2013.

Connolly impresses

FOOTBALL: Trafalgar product Leo Connolly continues to impress as he presses for a spot in the St Kilda senior team.

Connolly, who was selected by the Saints from Gippsland Power in last year’s national draft, impressed in a scratch match against Brisbane Lions at Yeronga last weekend.

The silky left-footer was joined by the likes of Dylan Roberton and Shane Savage in the St Kilda seconds team.

Connolly spent a large chunk of the game in the midfield and was described by the Saints website as ‘piecing together several impressive moments in the contest in-between his stints up forward.’

Bombers out of A Grade

CRICKET: Yallourn North will not play A Grade cricket in the Latrobe Valley District Cricket League in 2020-21.

The Bombers advised the league board last month that they would not be able to field a top-flight side during the upcoming season.

Yallourn North reported they had lost 70 per cent of the players who played one or more A Grade games last season.

Siddle ready for Tassie Shield debut CRICKET

LATROBE Valley export Peter Siddle is poised to make his Tasmania debut against Queensland when the Sheffield Shield starts on Saturday.

The Tigers are completing their preparations ahead of the season opener in South Australia when the opening round starts under strict COVID-19 hub protocols.

Tasmania skipper Tim Paine said the state’s current crop of pace bowlers is the best assembled since it last won the Shield, with Siddle at the forefront.

The 35-year-old is excited about this new chapter of his career after 15 years with Victoria.

“As much as I hate not playing cricket, COVID has probably helped with a bit of longevity, having that breather,” Siddle told reporters in Adelaide.

Siddle is likely to be joined by another former Test paceman in Jackson Bird, speedster Riley Meredith and the emerging Nathan Ellis.

“Bird and I can hold up an end, do our thing and bowl lots of overs,” he said.

“It will be exciting to see Riley go, knowing he doesn’t have to bowl as many overs as he has in the past.

“He can give a little more in the spells and we all know how fast he can bowl when he’s up and going.”

Gus is truly Lion-hearted FOOTBALL

WHEN Gus Eaton and his Moe teammates celebrated their 1967 Latrobe Valley Football League senior flag triumph, little did they know it would mark more than five decades in the premiership wilderness for the Lions.

That day would be the highlight of a sterling 18-year career at Moe for Eaton, who arrived unannounced as a teenager from the Riverina in early 1961.

“I was born in Mildura and my old man was in the army, so we moved around a bit when I was a kid,” Eaton said.

“I went to 10-12 different schools growing up, but we settled in Urana.”

Eaton showed great promise as a youngster and in 1959 at the age of 15 was a member of the Urana-Cullival team which won the Coreen Football League premiership.

“We had a really good side,” Eaton said.

“One of the stars was a good mate of mine Max Urquhart, who played nearly 100 games at Collingwood.

“Max played in that 1959 side, then went down to Corowa and that is where he was spotted by Bobby Rose, who was coaching Wangaratta Rovers at the time.

“He said to Collingwood you’ve got to get this bloke and Max ended up there.”

Eaton’s football career would take a turn when he headed on a holiday to the Latrobe Valley in 1961.

“I came down here on a holiday and stayed with the relatives of a mate of mine Darryl Fox,” he said.

“He had a cousin in Moe, so we came down on the bus, had a good time and I thought I’d stay here.

“I was only 17 at the time and a bloke I ended up boarding with Greg Fox said the Moe footy club was holding its annual meeting.

“So I went down there and was allowed in, the committee said what do you want? I said I’m a footballer and was looking for a job and the next week I started at Saxon’s Timber Mill.”

Eaton took time to adjust to the Latrobe Valley Football League, playing a handful of games at senior level in 1961 and 1962.

“I played the first three games in the seniors in 1962, but got whacked back to the seconds and won the club best and fairest,” he said.

His fortunes and that of the Moe improved with the arrival of Don Keyter in 1963.

“Don came down from Nhill and had played in the VFL with South Melbourne,” he said.

“Moe signed him up as coach the previous year after he played against the Latrobe Valley interleague side.

“He was probably six foot two and played in the ruck and centre-half forward.

“We made the finals in 1963, but Traralgon belted us at Morwell, the mud on the ground that day was six inches deep.”

Keyter would stay at the Lions in 1964 and tried Eaton as a centreman, a role which he enjoyed.

But with Keyter’s departure to East Hawthorn, Alby Law took charge and found Eaton the position where he would thrive most.

“I had a reasonable year in 1965 which was Alby’s first as coach playing centre-half forward and fullforward, but one of the selectors said why not try me on the wing in 1966,” he said.

“So they gave me a go, I dominated the first game I played and stayed there for the next six or seven years.”

In the 1967 grand final, Moe went in as rank outsiders against a Bairnsdale side which recorded 18 consecutive wins.

But having accounted for Morwell in the preliminary final the previous week, confidence was high in the Moe camp and justifiably so as they prevailed 14.9 (93) to 12.15 (87).

Eaton’s recollections of the match some 53 years on are a little hazy and he explained why.

“There was a blue in the first quarter and I was king-hit from behind. All I can remember is the celebrations, we had 12 barrels on the Sunday, but what comes to mind is we had 14 the next year when we got done by Traralgon,” he said.

In 1972, the Lions kicked more goals than Traralgon, but lost 13.17 (95) to 14.10 (94).

Twelve months later, Sale played the role of heartbreaker, defeating the Lions 13.15 (93) to 13.14 (92).

“They called us the Collingwood of the bush by then because we kept falling short,” Eaton said.

“I was captain in 1972 and was a bit surprised to get the job to be honest, but I didn’t change my approach.

“My memory is Traralgon were a pretty good side and had Terry Hunter as captain-coach, it was one of those games that could have gone either way.

“In 1973 we had a new coach Ron Haeberle and we played a bit more of a handball game which worked for us.

“But it didn’t change the result.”

Haeberle remained in 1974, but Moe could not shag the bridesmaid tag, going down to Warragul by four points.

Eaton spent much of the year in the reserves, winning the league medal, but come grand final day was in the Moe side.

With the clock ticking down deep in the final quarter, Eaton swooped on the ball in the back pocket and takes up the story.

“I was like Phil Manassa, I had the ball in the back pocket, ran through the half back line and the wing, bouncing the footy, I’d probably had three or four bounces and got to about 80 metres out from goal.

“As I went to kick the ball to Jenno (Ian Jennings) at full-forward, the siren went, if we had another couple of seconds, we probably would have won the game.”

Eaton remained at the Lions until 1979 when he hung up the boots after a career highlighted by 180 senior games and 159 in the reserves, with his total of 339 club games a record until passed in recent years by Peter Ainsworth.

Eaton’s association with Moe did not end there.

He later coached the club’s thirds, reserves and Under-16 teams before retiring from coaching in 1992.

By then Eaton was also entrenched as the club’s historian, a role first he took on following a bad car accident in 1975.

“It knocked me around a little bit and I was looking for something to do,” he said.

Eaton set about compiling games records for the club, hunting back through league records dating back to the 1940s.

He was responsible for organising life membership awards and memorabilia on display at Ted Summerton Reserve, and played a key role in the Team of the Century celebrations in 2003.

Eaton was named on the wing in the Team of the Century, making up a centre line that also included Jason Shields and Barry Rowlings, who had a storied VFL/AFL career with Hawthorn and Richmond.

The team included a number of Eaton’s teammates from the golden era, names such as Alby Law, Danny O’Brien, Alan Steel, Tom O’Reilly and Max Donelly.

Donelly and Eaton in 1983 raised more than $6000 for the club when they ran from Bairnsdale to Moe. “We did it as a fundraiser for the club, got permission to run on the highway,” he said.

“We went from Bairnsdale to Sale on the first day, Sale to Flynn, Flynn to Gunns Gully and then Gunns Gully to the footy ground on the last day.

“Ted Summerton was in the car in front of us and Graeme McGowan from 3UL behind us at the time.

“We didn’t have much attention until Channel 10 picked us up in Morwell, but we had people sponsoring us for 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c a kilometre.”

Eaton continues to follow the Lions’ fortunes closely and said he is hopeful the club’s senior flag drought can end sooner rather than later, possibly when Gippsland League footy returns in 2021.

Goannas return to the cricket pitch

VETERANS CRICKET: Veterans cricket is again alive (and sort of well) in Gippsland.

After several weeks without practice during lockdown, the Gippsland Goannas are again back in action.

Practice sessions for all Goannas, which now include a good group of Over-50s, have resumed on a Wednesday evening at Glengarry cricket nets, with sessions also occurring on a weekend.

Last weekend some of the veterans from the Iona Over-60s joined the Goannas in a practice match, held at the Sale Oval on Saturday.

The weather was warm and windy and the Sale Oval was in excellent condition Several of the Goannas Over-50’s teamed with the Iona group to play against the Goannas Over-60 players.

Neil Meredith captained the Goannas Seniors, won the toss and sent Fred Debono and Gordon Hollonds in to open the innings.

The batters were to be restricted to facing 30 balls, as the match was to be 35 overs per side.

Col Carmody and (debutant) Gary Rose were followed by Murray Moore and Ian Gibson.

Goanna Juniors (Over 50s), Rod Jones, Peter Padula, Geoff Kinnish and Jamie Freeman all bowled tidy spells for Iona and latecomer Ian Southall also bowled a few overs.

The Goannas innings lasted 34 overs, with all 11 having a bat, and a score of 108, for six wickets was the final tally.

Due to COVID-19 rules there are no drinks or afternoon teas to be supplied, so the players had to bring their own lunch, which was consumed in the break.

Gordon Cowling and Rob Bacchetti opened the bowling and were followed

by Peter Anton, Moore, Debono and

Meredith. Unfortunately Barrie Nunn had cramped up and was unable to bowl.

Padula, Peter Felstead (after a golden duck), and Ron Lovel were the best of the Iona batting contributors as they finished at 6 for 104 after 30 overs.

Ian Gibson, behind the stumps, snared three victims, showing he is getting better with age, deserving his selection in the National Over-70 team.

It seems that there will be some sort of competition for veterans cricket this season, with matches between rural teams commencing in a few weeks.

Goannas will field teams in the

Over-50, Over-60 and in the new Over-70 competition, and as the format becomes clear we will send this information to the media.

Meanwhile practice will continue for all Goannas players at Glengarry on Wednesdays from 4.45pm.

The Annual Meeting for the Goannas will take place after training on Wednesday, October 14 all interested persons are asked to attend.

Pathway plans to find state’s finest

CRICKET: Cricket Victoria earlier this week confirms plans for the future of its player pathway system to find, nurture and support the state’s best cricket talent for generations to come.

The pathway model is built on player transitions from Association representative cricket at Under-14 age levels through to a statewide Youth Premier League at Under-16 level, to an underage Premier Cricket competition and ultimately selection in Cricket Victoria’s emerging players program.

As announced by Cricket Victoria earlier this month, the statewide Youth Premier League carnivals for Under-16 boys and Under-15 girls have been suspended for the upcoming season due timing and budget impacts arising from COVID-19.

The Youth Premier League competitions will return in the 2021-22 season. In the interim, Cricket Victoria will support its Associations and Affiliates in providing representative cricket playing opportunities for talented young Victorian players.

At a broader level, this summer will see a range of representative opportunities at traditional Victorian Country Cricket League (VCCL), Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU) and Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) carnivals along with some selected events run by Cricket Victoria.

This includes an Under-17 Male CV Emerging Players Program tournament and an Under-16 Female CV Emerging Players Program tournament.

The new pathway is built on three key objectives: creating great player experiences to retain talent; streamlining the way players progress in the game and ensuring equality of opportunity across Victoria.

Cricket Victoria chair David Maddocks said the importance of providing a simplified solution was critical to the game’s ability to manage emerging talent.

THE sun was shining as players took to the courts for the first games for the Moe and District Netball Association on Saturday.

The association picked up the winter season to play the last four games of the season before finals.

Teams from Under-9s to Under-17s returned to action.

Moe and District Netball Association secretary Donna Krznaric said having the players back on the courts was fantastic.

“Everyone was just really happy to be there, we had the perfect weather and because the canteen closed due to coronavirus restrictions we gave icy poles to all the players,” she said.

“There was a coffee stand for all of the adults as well ... we had so much great feedback from the day.

“We had some rules, only one parent could attend per players and we had a QR code where everyone could sign in with their details, so that if the worst happens and we have to contract trace it will not be a problem.”

The association start a summer season tonight

running concurrent to the winter season with teams from Under-9 to Under-17 age groups, mixed teams and a boys’ only competition for those aged between 12 and 15.

Moe and District Netball Association president Tamara Kennedy said the boys’ competition was a great way for players of winter sports such as football to stay fit during the off-season.

“We always have a summer competition its always a mix of those core netball players and the ones coming to give the sport a try, it is always fun,” she said.

Ms Kennedy said the association had still been active during the time they were unable to play due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Our umpire coordinator Kerrie Strobridge ran umpire clinics during the down time for umpires to improve their skills and ask questions and she is holding another one next week,” she said.

“We also embraced some of the new technologies by having a few Zoom meetings which is a wonderful way to connect with our community.

“All together it was 55 teams playing on a Saturday and this weekend there are 69 summer teams which is great.

“It was just great to have them all playing again, with a lot of COVIDSafe rules established by government bodies.”

Stability the key at Newborough Yallourn SOCCER

AFTER being crowned league champions in 2019, the Newborough Yallourn United senior men’s team was set for another big season in 2020 hoping to replicate their success, but all was put on hold due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The club is now looking ahead to a successful 2021 Latrobe Valley Soccer League season with the re-appointment of both its senior men’s and women’s coaches in Clayton Bell and Darren Vella.

has been working to add to his squad and will be looking to re-invigorate his players after their year on the sidelines.

On the women’s front, Darren had assembled a strong team for 2020 and was hoping to push for a top four finish. He will most likely retain most of his squad for 2021.

The ladies will also be buoyed by a brand new set of changerooms which are currently under construction at Burrage Reserve and set to be completed before the end of this year.

Training for all teams will begin once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, and will be announced on the club’s social media pages.
