HYDROGEN HUB

THE Latrobe Valley could become a potential hydrogen export hub as part of the federal government’s plan to support next generation energy technologies into the next decade. The Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor unveiled a new $18 billion energy technology roadmap on Tuesday which

earmarked five priority technologies for investment and lower emissions. Mr Taylor identified hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, energy storage, low carbon steel and aluminium, and soil carbon. However, coal, gas, solar and wind were not on the government’s priority investment list, as they were already mature technologies.

One of the key actions was a $1.9 billion investment package which includes $70.2 million to establish Australia’s first regional hydrogen export hub. Potential sites included the Valley, alongside Darwin, north-west Western Australia, Gladstone, the Hunter Valley, Bell Bay in Tasmania and the Spencer Gulf. According to the federal government,

the Valley has potential due to the area’s industrial energy demand, skilled workforce, energy resources, and access to port facilities. The region also holds promising resources for carbon capture and storage through the CarbonNet project being developed in Bass Strait. Continued on page 2
