SYMES ON MINE STATE Resources Minister Jaclyn Symes has revealed a previously undetectable weakness in the ground as a key factor behind the current woes at the Yallourn coal mine.

Work continues on the Morwell River diversion wall following the state government’s energy emergency declaration last week.

The declaration allows owners

EnergyAustralia to divert the Morwell River away from the mine so it can repair issues without the need for approvals.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Ms Symes said the immediate focus was on understanding the nature of the cracking and to undertake immediate repairs.

“The recent cracks do appear to be linked to a previously undetectable

weakness in the ground between the diversion channel and the active mine field,” Ms Symes said.

“Once we ensure the stability of the site and mitigate the risks, it will be important for us to look at how the event happened and what we can learn from it.

“Detailed geotechnical and hydrotechnical investigations are underway to inform of the course the important

remedial work as well as future preventative measures, all in order to keep the community safe and the power on.”

EnergyAustralia estimates that the average daily flow rate of water through the Morwell River diversion is more than half a gigalitre, which equates to more than 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

THE scars of savage storms that ripped through the state last week will be etched into our landscape for months to come.

The clean-up will be long and communities are calling for common sense solutions to fast-track recovery efforts.

The immediate toll has been disastrous - two Victorian lives tragically lost.

Flooding and catastrophic winds that wreaked utter devastation on dozens of family homes, farms and communities in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland.

The work of our emergency services volunteers and staff responding to thousands of calls for help across the state undoubtedly saved lives and protected property.

After two horror years of catastrophic bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and now severe storms, their commitment to supporting and protecting our regional communities when we need it most has not gone unnoticed.

I toured the storm-hit regionwith local Nationals MPs Melina Bath and Danny O’Brien to hear firsthand from the worst hit communities as they come together to rebuild homes, fences and buildings and to restore road access to homes and towns.

Financial assistance – as the Commonwealth Government has provided in the form of disaster relief payments – is one such support, but it’s also about driving practical, common sense solutions that can be implemented on the ground and tailored to each community’s unique needs.

Hundreds of uprooted trees still block access to homes and in state forests, with locals calling for roadside firewood collection rules to be changed to allow local people to lead the clean-up, while also making use of a resource that will otherwise go to waste.

Although permits can be obtained for councilmanaged roads, current rules prevent firewood collection along VicRoads managed roads.

Meanwhile, the autumn firewood collection season in designated parts of our state forests will close on June 30. It will take many more months to properly restore road access if we don’t take the opportunity to put common sense rules in place to support the clean-up, while also making sure a valuable resource doesn’t go to waste.

AS Gippsland faces yet another ordeal, I am reminded again just how lucky I am to be the local MP for such an amazing community.

I have been overwhelmed by the passion and generosity of the people of Gippsland who continue to support one another as we face storm damage, floods and ongoing power outages – all while navigating restrictions from the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the past week I have travelled the electorate and seen the devastation first-hand, but Gippslanders have put their shoulders to the wheel and supported one another.

Whether it has been farmers clearing roads, community organisations coordinating accommodation or showers, local business people offering hot meals and other services or just everyday citizens spontaneously offering help where they see a need, Gippslanders have responded incredibly.

While this doesn’t surprise me because I know the people of Gippsland South have generous hearts, it is important that everyone’s contribution is recognised.

Biased opinions masquerading as fact checking

ON June 11, 2021, the Indian Bar Association served legal notice to chief scientist at the World Health Organization, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, for being the primary accomplice for “influencing public opinion via official propaganda” and “running a disinformation campaign against Ivermectin” - a popular anti-parasitic drug very successfully prescribed by a growing army of highly respected doctors and hospitals in many European countries for the early onset and treatment of COVID-19.

I deliberately mentioned this at the outset because it serves as the perfect springboard for highlighting the plight of Australian Independent politician Craig Kelly who has championed this cheap, long-proven safe and effective drug (Ivermectin) for the whole 17 nearly 18 months of the worldwide coronavirus crisis, and paid a heavy personal and political price as a result.

To be sure, any Australian doctor and/or politician who dares to speak out against the official government-approved narrative concerning COVID is savagely and aggressively demonised and swiftly silenced by way of deplatforming from social media as was the fate of Craig Kelly.

Indeed, strongly aligning himself with Craig Kelly and other brave truth-tellers across the world, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently banned “COVID passports” in the State of Florida, and I am very glad to see that the Governor of Texas has followed Governor DeSantis’s lead.

In his speech, Governor DeSantis said this: “This Big Brother Big Tech censorship of free speech and freedom of choice, especially in a country that supposedly values scientific inquiry and open debate, is the very antithesis of true democracy.

It’s not ‘research’ if they’re censoring opposing information. It’s not ‘science’ if you’re not allowed to question it? Therefore, in the hope of emerging into the light from the dark tunnel of the medical Dark Age we are currently witnessing, and to protect the good citizens of Florida from statesanctioned medical apartheid, I am signing this Bill into law today.”

It is fitting that the last word goes to the great Dutch Enlightenment philosopher, Immanuel Kant, who put is so eloquently in 1793: “Our age is an age of enlightenment, of criticism, to which everything must be subjected. The sacredness of medicine is by many regarded as grounds for exemption from the examination of this tribunal.

But if it is exempted, it becomes the subject of just suspicion, and cannot therefore lay claim to sincere respect, which reason accords only to that which has stood the test of a free and public examination.”

Supporting Latrobe City’s recovery THE past week has tested the resolve of many in our community, to what they thought was the end of their tether and then they have gone further.

It has been a tumultuous and challenging time.

I have heard first hand heartbreaking stories, along with those which demonstrate the spirit of our great community.

We are seeing and have seen neighbours stand by each other’s sides and strangers lend a hand to people in need.

Council crews have been working around the clock alongside other agencies to support our community through the clean-up and recovery phase.

The support of emergency service agencies – first responders and volunteers on the ground – has been nothing short of remarkable.

The care and support that these men and women provided at the height of the incident, in difficult and dangerous conditions, and in the days that pass, our community is truly indebted to you. On behalf of Latrobe City, I thank you. To our fellow community members who have rolled up their sleeves, lending a hand to friends, family or even strangers, your efforts are truly appreciated.

As we know, the damage of wind and flood has been significant. The recovery phase will be long. Our crews are progressing and nearing the completion of their assessments, gaining a further understanding of the clean-up and repair work as we transition to recovery.

To support our community in the recovery phase, we need the support of all levels of government.

I would like to acknowledge the announcement of various financial packages which are available to support eligible community members at their time of need.

In past days, I have met with the Acting Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Minister for Government Services, Danny Pearson MP and Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing MP to discuss available support and a desire to work

in partnership with the state government. It was heart-warming to receive a call from Minister for Local Government, Sean Leane MP at the beginning of the event. I have appreciated his regular calls and the ability to brief him.

I welcome the announcement by Acting Premier, James Merlino, which has resulted in the mobilisation of Bushfire Recovery Victoria to support the clean-up and recovery work for communities impacted by storm damage. I acknowledge the support of the Australian Defence Force and look forward to welcoming defence members to Latrobe City to assist with the clean-up phase.

We cannot do this alone. We must work together, to build on and enhance our relationships across all levels of government and with support agencies, to ensure a better outcome for our community.

I am passionate about our community and Latrobe City. I will continue to strongly advocate to ensure that the voices of those impacted are heard and the support our community needs is met.

When speaking with elected government officials, I have extended an invite to visit the impacted areas to experience first-hand the suffering, devastation and to grasp the enormity of the task ahead for many who are overwhelmed and exhausted.

I welcome a visit by any government official to experience and understand fully the impacts on our community and community infrastructure, including the significant damage to the region’s roads - the welcome mat to Latrobe City is laid out.

I thank those who have taken the opportunity to visit. Last Thursday, I welcomed Paul Edbrooke MP, Parliamentary Secretary Police and Emergency Services, showing him the impacts of the storm around the Yinnar and district. Later I spent time with Victorian Liberal Leader, Michael O’Brien MP and Member for Eastern Victoria, Edward O’Donohue MP touring both the impacted areas of Yinnar and Traralgon.

The flood and storm event not only impacted residents, but resulted in damage to the Yallourn Power Station and brown coal mine.

I implore federal and state governments to work with and support Energy Australia as they work with geotechnical experts and government regulators to find a solution in addressing the vertical cracks in the mine wall.

Our community cannot be further disadvantaged, with questions being raised about the life expectancy of the power station should flooding from the Morwell River impact the mine.

Latrobe City needs greater support from all levels of government, we need a considered and whole of government approach to support the ongoing transition of the Latrobe City community, to bring new industries, new employers and more jobs to our region, while assisting existing businesses to grow and create employment opportunities.

AT last we have a politician (Darren Chester) who understands the plight the people of Gippsland have had to go through after the destructive storm that hit the region.

The volunteers can only do so much to help the SES. Darren is spot on by saying the Victorian government should have brought in the army.

The federal government have sent the army overseas when called upon, then why not here.

Once again, another blinder by the Victorian government. Bring on the election.

The Victorian Budget 2021/22 has invested more than $759 million in funding for more paramedics, more triage care and support staff for Ambulance Victoria, as well as targeted funding to improve flow in the state’s busy emergency departments.

The state government said since 2015 it has invested close to $250 million to upgrade and rebuild ambulance stations to provide better working conditions for paramedics and ensure lifesaving emergency care.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said this serves as another important addition to the Moe community.

“The new ambulance station for Moe is another important part of our commitment to giving communities across the Latrobe Valley the best lifesaving emergency care and services, now – and into the future,” Ms Shing said.

THE state government announced plans for a new ambulance station in Moe, with construction set to commence next month.

Health Minister Martin Foley on Tuesday said May Constructions Pty Ltd has been appointed to construct the new Moe Ambulance Station at 24 Narracan Drive.

The new branch will feature a five-bay garage for ambulances, areas including four bedrooms for hard-working paramedics to rest and recuperate, training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and improved security and car parking to make sure paramedics are safe.

The location of the new branch on Narracan Drive allows ease of access to main roads and major sites including schools, shopping precincts and community facilities.

This serves as part of the state government’s investment into the Ambulance Victoria program to support ambulance response times, employ

Chester’s tribute to former Nats leader

FEDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has paid tribute to toppled Nationals leader Michael McCormack after Barnaby Joyce’s ascension to the top job.

Mr Joyce was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister earlier this week after defeating Mr McCormack in a party room spill on Monday.

“Politics can be brutal and today my party deposed one of the most dedicated, resilient and passionate advocates regional Australia has ever produced,” Mr Chester said.

“I regard Michael as a personal friend and trusted colleague.”

Mr Chester, the current Veterans Affairs’ Minister, has been tipped to return to the backbench as part of a cabinet reshuffle triggered

by Mr Joyce’s return as Nationals leader.

Senator Bridget McKenzie, an ally of Mr Joyce, is likely to return to the federal cabinet.

Mr Chester said his number one focus would be on serving the people of Gippsland.

“I’m absolutely committed to run as the preselected National Party candidate in the seat of Gippsland at the next federal election and continue to help deliver a stronger, safe and fairer future for our community,” he said.

“It continue to be an enormous honour to represent the community I love in the federal parliament.”

Mr Chester was in Gormandale to welcome the first Australian Defence Force Personnel on the ground in Gippsland to assist with recovery works.

He greeted Colonel John Molnar and his crew who will be working on debris and tree removal, distributing generators to areas where power is still a problem and providing support to affected families.

Mr Chester said a contingent of Australian Defence Force personnel were deployed to the Newborough Army Reserve depot.

“Our local crews have done a great job already but there’s a lot of work to be done, and extra boots on the ground will make a difference,” he said.

“The crew received a briefing from Traralgon’s Daniel Barr who works at DELWP in Yarram.

“Colonel Molnar is a Gippslander, growing up in Traralgon and playing football for the North Gippsland Football League.

“It’s great to have Gippslanders coming back to our region to assist in the recovery efforts. Thanks everyone for your hard work to help people in the storm and flood affected areas.”

POLICE are asking for witnesses to come forward following a fatal crash in Glengarry North on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of TraralgonMaffra Road and Frasers Lane at about 10:50am after reports a car and two trucks had collided.

The driver of the car died at the scene and was later identified as a 66-year old man from Boisdale.

The truck drivers were uninjured and stopped at the scene.

Traralgon-Maffra Road was closed in both directions near Frasers Lane for the entirety of Monday afternoon as police investigated the scene.

Investigators wish to speak to anyone who saw the vehicles prior to the collision.

Parking incident at Woolworths Traralgon

POLICE are calling for witnesses to an incident that occurred in the car park of Woolworths supermarket on Breed Street in Traralgon.

On Monday, June 14 at approximately 12:30pm, the victim parked their Holden Captiva in the carpark.

Assistance for farmers now available

STATE Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas paid the Latrobe Valley a visit on Monday to announce the appointment of a dedicated Agriculture Recovery Manager to assist farmers following the recent storms and flooding that lashed the state.

Meeting dairy farmers Matt, Nadine, Michael and Margaret Gleeson on their property in Boolarra South, the minister had a first-hand look at the effects on the Gippsland region, which at this stage is reported as 492 stock losses, 258 hectares of crop lost, 5496 hectares of pasture lost, 622 kilometres of fences destroyed and 91 structures lost.

Speaking to the media, Ms Thomas announced the introduction of the new position as she urged all farmers to seek the help that is available to them.

“The devastation that has been wreaked by the storm has really been unlike anything we have seen before with the impact of particularly the amount of trees down still being felt across Gippsland and indeed other parts of Victoria,” Ms Thomas said.

“I am very pleased that there are a range of supports that are currently available, funded by both the state and federal governments, to support those who have been effected by the floods and by the severe weather event.

“I really want to encourage farmers to reach out for help, we know they are an incredibly self-reliant group of people, they look out for themselves and plan ahead, but sometimes the best laid plans are not enough so that is why today I am also announcing that we are putting in place an Agriculture Recovery Manager.”

Agriculture Victoria’s Darren Hickey has been appointed to this position and has already begun work as part of the incident management team.

She said the implementation of the Agriculture Recovery Manager will be vital in ensuring farmers are best connected with the assistance they need.

“The state government is continuing to assess the scale of the damage and the support that will be required,” she said.

“There are already a range of supports that are available so I encourage farmers to get in touch with Darren, to ensure we are connecting people with the correct support networks and financial assistance,” she said.

When it comes to the damage this storm event has caused, she said it is too early to judge the extent of its impact on the agriculture industry.

“What we are seeing is that we have had stock losses, a loss of crops, fences are down and so on, we are still gathering all that intelligence on the impacts of the storm, and then of course the next step is recovery,” she said.

“The government has announced that bushfire recovery Victoria will be leading our recovery efforts, so we have a very experienced agency able to assist and work with people through this process - but certainly the state government stand

Dairy farmer Matt Gleeson said he welcomed the appointment of the Agriculture Recovery Manager as a point of call for people in the industry in need of assistance.

“I think it is a valuable asset, signposting and pinpointing people that are probably busy doing things on the farm themselves that haven’t had the opportunity to take stock on what is happening

that is available to them outside their own farm,” Mr Gleeson said.

“That support (from the agriculture recovery manager), will be very important to people who are trying to find information and resources, while letting them know they are not isolated and by themselves as they go about the recovery process.”

Mr Gleeson said it was great to welcome the Agriculture Minister to his property to see the damage caused by the storm.

“It is not the normal thing for us here, but I think it nice to see the acknowledgment that the event has gone through the area,” he said.

“We are 10 days post the event so we are already been responding ourselves, but it is good to see that they are interested in how to meet this situation going forward and it is another point of contact where if I need something I have the confidence that there are people who will respond.”

Road closure is a blow

THE Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort has been dealt yet another blow to start the 2021 snow season, with storm damage resulting in the popular Mount Baw Baw Tourist Road being closed for an indefinite period of time.

This comes after the state’s most recent COVID outbreak saw the resort closed off to Melburnians to begin the season and the current requirement of a negative test 72 hours out from visiting the mountain for all metropolitan residents.

A statement from Regional Roads Victoria outlined the current state of the road.

“A number of roads have been significantly damaged by the flood water and falling trees in the (Mount Baw Baw) area, these roads are dangerous, and we need to be sure that this road is safe before we let people drive on it, some roads in the region have suffered extensive damage and may take time to fix,” the statement said.

“In the Baw Baw Ranges, landslips are proving to be the biggest challenge, Mount Baw Baw Tourist Road is closed due to landslips in 13 locations along the road and debris blocking roadside drains - In some sections, large chunks of the road have fallen away leaving only a single lane in place.”

Despite this setback, the Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort is operating at its full capacity with marketing manager Amon Bradshaw urging visitors to use the alternate South Face Road route.

“The South Face Road is open and in good condition, which is via Moe and Erica, it is actually really quite a nice drive and less windy than the Tourist Road and because you stay on the highway a little bit longer it actually takes the same amount of time with just the last 30km being unsealed road,” Mr Bradshaw said.

“The resort is open as normal and we are promoting the access via South Face as hard as we can because obviously the Tourist Road is closed for an amount of time “People should just plan a little bit of extra time if you are coming from the city because if you are new you might take a tiny bit longer to get here just because you are not familiar with the road.

“We just want people to keep in mind that access has changed to the mountain, but the resort is operating totally normally and will keep operating totally normally just via the South Face.”

In terms of the impact on numbers moving forward, Mr Bradshaw told The Express management

“We are hoping it doesn’t affect numbers but we just don’t know (at this stage), we are hoping once the COVID restrictions ease and people wrap their heads around the alternate route we become very busy,” he said.

“The South Face to be honest is a safer road because it is wider than the Tourist Road, the real impacted ones out of this situation are those businesses in places like Tanjil Bren and Noojee who are based around the ski season, so we feel for those guys who really are suffering.”

With school holidays starting this weekend, Mr Bradshaw said this is a crucial time for the resort as they hope to once again welcome large numbers of tourists.

“A big school holidays is always much sort after for the ski resort so it can be the busiest time of the season when the snow conditions are good and there is no impacts of COVID like there is now we would be expecting to be very busy and make a lot of good money which can get you through a quiet tail end,” he said For those thinking of heading up to the mountain and are unsure due to the Tourist Road closure, he had this message.

“First and foremost don’t worry, because South Face overall takes about the same amount of time and is actually a nice drive – keep in mind the Tourist Road is closed but that shouldn’t stop you from coming up.”

Restrictions further ease

THE state government yesterday announced further easing of restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, just in time for school holidays.

The changes to restrictions will come in to effect from 11.59pm tonight.

One of the bigger changes in restrictions for Victorians is the increase of home visitors from five in regional areas and two in metropolitan areas to 15 across the entire state.

It is good news for sports fans as players, parents and spectators can attend outdoor community sport within the total cap of 1000 people, only limited by the one person per 2sqm rule.

The regulations surrounding masks will not change and masks must still be worn inside.

Care facility and hospital visitors will move to two visitors at a time and up to five a day. Schools and higher education/ training will move to a density limit of one person per 2sqm.

Work from home requirements across regional and metropolitan areas will be removed and businesses can hold up to 75 per cent of staff or up to 30 people if the workplace total is 40 or less.

Density limits of one person per 2sqm remain in place.

Up to 300 people will be permitted to attend both indoor and outdoor funerals and weddings, however dance floors will still not be permitted for the latter.

Pubs, bars and other hospitality venues will move to 75 percent capacity and no group limits will apply for indoor and outdoor, non-seated venues.

Nightclubs will have no overarching venue limit and a density limit of one person per 2sqm will apply, however dance floors will remain closed for all entertainment venues.

Acting Premier James Merlino said these changes in restrictions will last for two weeks to allow for extra freedoms during school holidays.

Tahleeah: I attended the Kurnai Young Parents Program (KYPP) in 2020 and I received a massive amount of support from them. I found out about this position through the Youth Employment Program at the end of Year 12 where the teachers worked closely with me to find employment. I thought it would be difficult to start my career and/or study with a daughter, but I see the Youth Employment Program as a perfect opportunity to achieve this.

How has your confidence grown since working at the LVA? Tahleeah: I think I’m more confident in trying new things because I would usually be hesitant to work on tasks as crucial as the Grants work, but the team have trusted me to give things a go and now I know it is okay to make mistakes.

What do you like most about working at the LVA? Tahleeah: I think there’s a lot of respect in the culture - it’s like a family there.

Do you enjoy working in administration and what are your future career goals?

Tahleeah: I do enjoy administration, but I think at the moment I want to explore a bit more, there are roles I’m only just finding out about now even in LVA that I didn’t know about before, and in other departments as well, but I think the VPS is my interest and I want to stay there. There are a lot of opportunities, and I don’t know where I want to go next, but I do want to stay at the LVA. What advice would you give another young person considering a career in the Victorian Government?

Tahleeah: I don’t think people realise how many options there are in government until they get there. I thought if I don’t like administration work, I don’t know what other career I would want, but now I’m here, there’s so many other things that are interesting career paths that are all in government - it’s opened a whole new world of choices for me.

Shining a light on better futures for Youth Week

Young people aged from 15 years and nine months until their 21st birthday are able to access support if they have been on an eligible Child Protection order.

The programs that are delivered under the banner of Better Futures include: Better Futures, Home Stretch, Planning to Succeed and Leaving Care Housing Support.

While still in care the allocated Youth Transition Advisor primarily provides support and advice to case managers and care teams in preparing young people to transition from care.

As the young person nears the end of their order, the Youth Transition Advisor can increase support to the young person.

Support is focused on the six key service offers when providing supports, which include:  Education  Employment  Health and Wellbeing  Connections  Housing and Living Skills  Transition to University This program has also supported young people to participate in a wide variety of activities such as, hiking the Kokoda Trail, following their dream to be a Jackaroo, reconnecting with family in Tasmania, Equine therapy, Living independently and more.

SECONDARY School musicians from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School enjoyed participating in a musical collaboration as a part of the South Eastern Independent Schools Association (SEISA) Music Festival on Tuesday, April 27.

Held at the West Gippsland Arts Centre, musicians from St Paul’s Traralgon and Warragul Campuses worked together with students from Beaconhills College, Gippsland Grammar School and Newhaven College under the direction of music staff from each school and guest artist, Paul Jarman, a well-known Australian composer and dynamic music educator.

Students learnt several pieces of music during extensive morning workshops that culminated in group performances from both orchestral and choral ensembles, together with a number of solo performances.

The Orchestral ensemble performed Code X (by Paul Barker) and a Symphonic Suite from Lord of the Rings (arranged by John Whitney) while the Choral musicians performed Deep Deeper, Deep (by Paul Jarman and Bonnie Nilsson) and Flight Song (by Kim Andre Arnesen).

This year the groups were separated for COVID reasons, but in previous events students ‘played as one’ having the opportunity to perform as a unified orchestra.

Space dream a small step closer

AS a young girl admiring the stars from her small rural home of Gilcrest, Colorado, Celene Benavente never thought one day she might have the opportunity to join them, now after receiving the Graeme Edwards Memorial Scholarship at Federation University, she’s one step closer to achieving her space dream.

Ms Benavente, 27, moved to Churchill from the US in 2015 and is currently a first-year mechatronics systems engineering student, a course which focuses on combining electrical, mechanical and software engineering.

She was last month awarded the Graeme Edwards Memorial Scholarship, named in honour of Graeme Edwards, who tragically lost his life in a work-related incident at Yallourn Power Station in 2018.

The scholarship, which represents Graeme’s long held and firm commitment to safety, fairness, and selfless concern for his peers is something Ms Benavente said she was humbled to receive.

“I was very honoured to receive this in honour of Graeme Edwards and his foundation,” she said.

“The difference this scholarship has made has been tremendous, it’s essentially helped pay for me to be able to study full-time, something that I wouldn’t have been able to do if it wasn’t for something like this, it makes the world of difference.

“Being able to actually believe I can be an engineer and really focus and not having to worry about other things makes a whole lot of difference.”

However, Ms Benavente isn’t resting on her laurels, instead she’s set her sights about as high as they can go.

“I’m looking to peruse my PHD and I’m working towards becoming an astronaut,” she told The Express.

“I think with Australia now establishing a mission control centre we’re going to soon be sending astronauts from here, so I want to be prepared to be a front-runner when that does happen.”

I think people want to do amazing things, but th hey get too scared.

You need to move forward from that and really believe you can.

“I think for me, having someone of that calibre tell me ‘yes you can do it’ and becoming a close mentor to me has given me the confidence that if I do stay focused and I peruse my education

in a pursuit to get better and improve then it is something I can achieve,” she said.

Ms Benavente’s achievements and aspirations are even more notable considering the challenges she’s faced along the way.

“Coming from a Mexican background it isn’t something my family would necessarily see as something I could go towards, which is something quite common in the Mexican community,” she said.

“Where I come from I’m considered at risk because I come from a very low economic background, but I refuse to believe that and I know I can fight against the odds because I’m here, it’s just incredible and I’m going to keep pushing forwards.”

Despite preparing to enter an almost impossible job field in which the chances of making it to space are slim to none, Ms Benavente remains positive and even has advice for others trying to achieve their unlikely goal.

“You can do it, absolutely you can do it,” she said.

“I think at the end of the day it’s up to me to make that happen as it is to you, and I think if you want to do it don’t let anything stop you.

“The world is full of a lot of people who will say ‘how dare you dream’, I think people want to do amazing things but they get too scared.

You need to move forward from that and really believe that you can.”

Manufacturing vaccine Students blast off to the is a priority for Victoria Space Station room VICTORIA has developed and will make Australia’s first local mRNA COVID-19 vaccine candidate to reach Phase 1 clinical trials – a breakthrough in medicine and manufacturing that is set create jobs and save lives.

The state government confirmed earlier this week that it would invest $5 million to support Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) to manufacture doses of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine for trials, which are due to start within months.

The novel mRNA-based vaccine will enable a Victorian manufacturer to develop critical manufacturing capability of mRNA vaccines for clinical trials – a level of expertise currently unavailable in Australia.

The investment is the first to be made from the state government’s landmark $50 million fund

to develop the state’s mRNA manufacturing capability.

Some 150 people will be involved in the clinical trials that are due to begin in October, with preliminary results expected to be available in the first half of 2022.

MRNA Victoria’s Scientific Advisory Group, led

by Victoria’s Lead Scientist Dr Amanda Caples and including American luminary Dr Barney Graham and eminent Victorian infectious disease experts such as Professor Sharon Lewin (Doherty Institute) and Professor Brendan Crabb (Burnet Institute), endorsed the Monash investment.

“Making COVID vaccines in Victoria will create jobs and save lives – and it’s exciting these trials will be getting underway soon,” Acting Premier James Merlino said.

FOLLOWING this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime, with its theme of space, the students in the Prep/Grade One Learning Hub at Morwell Central Primary School showed an avid interest in learning more about this topic.

This resulted in an amazing Space Station room being created by two School Support Officers.

It has special lights and music as well as colourful displays and books about space.

The students have had a fantastic time accessing this room, dressing up as astronauts and learning about all the things that happen in space.

Some have even taken on the role of videographer and reporter, returning to their hub to share what they have seen and learned with their peers.

National Reconciliation Week event ST Mary’s Primary School, Newborough came together to celebrate National Reconciliation Week with a traditional Smoking Ceremony, which was organised by Indigenous Teacher, Margaret Cooper.

A smoking ceremony is an ancient custom among Aborigi ginal i Australians that involves smouldering various native plants to produce smoke.

This herbal smoke is believed to have cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits.

The Smoking Ceremony is also used to unite Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

$130K raised by the GERF appeal THE Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF) has so far raised $130,000 in its current appeal to assist those impacted by the recent flood and storm event.

Donations have been received from many generous Gippsland families, small and large businesses and from individuals who in the past have been recipients of GERF support.

GERF president Andy Tegart said he’d like to thank those who had donated to the fund so far.

He was also pleased to say that the fund had received significant donations from RACV Gippsland Solar, Latrobe Health Services, Loy Yang B and Aussie Broadband.

“These Gippsland companies are generously supporting Gippslanders in their time of need and we are very grateful for them donating to this very important appeal,” Mr Tegart said.

“We’d like to encourage other Gippsland businesses to throw their support behind GERF to ensure we are able to meet the emergency financial needs of those affected.”

The fund has so far distributed $100,500 to eligible residents from Jumbuk, Jeeralang Junction, Yinnar, Yinnar South, Boolarra, Boolarra South, Budgeree, Hazelwood South, Turtons Creek, Gifford West, Sale, Denison, Willung South and Traralgon.

“We are still seeking donations because the extent of the emergency is still unfolding and there will be more residents and businesses seeking assistance,” Mr Tegart said.

“We’re asking local community members and corporate citizens, neighbours and friends from other communities to think about the plight of flood-affected Gippsland communities and give whatever they can.”

It is anticipated that as continuing assessments are made in Latrobe City, Wellington and South Gippsland Shires there will be further applications for emergency assistance, including farmers impacted by the emergency.

THE Morwell Rotary Club will host a sausage sizzle for Morwell CBD businesses tomorrow morning as an acknowledgement and thank you to local businesses and their workers who have continued to suffer and ‘soldier on’ through the challenging COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a second attempt at holding this event, previously cancelled due to the lockdown at the end of May. All being well this week, our ‘Rotary special gourmet’ sausages will be available for all shop owners, management, staff, and shoppers in the Morwell CBD tomorrow from 10.30am-12 noon from ‘The Meeting Place’ on the corner of Tarwin Street and Commercial Road.

Traralgon Bridge Club saved by the dogs

TRARALGON Bridge Club fell victim to the recent Traralgon Creek flood, with the clubrooms being inundated with approximately one metre of water.

With no warning, the club was unable to salvage any furniture or equipment that was below the waterline and is unable to occupy the building for the foreseeable future.

That is when Latrobe City and the Traralgon Greyhound Club stepped in to help.

Club president Don Tylee said that both organisations have been magnificent in helping the club to clean up and find a new temporary home.

“The clubrooms are owned by the Council on their land and they have always been a fantastic and supportive landlord,” Mr Tylee said.

“We know that they were dealing with a lot of priorities but they were quick to help us to secure the building and then get the contaminated goods out of the club ready for a major repair job. We have really appreciated their communication and help.”

Mr Tylee said that then the Traralgon Greyhound Club stepped up and were very quick to respond to their request to provide a venue for the club while their own track works are being undertaken.

“We were blown away by their generosity and willingness to help us get back to bridge as soon as possible,” he said.

The club has lost all of its chairs, and most of its tables, cards and electronic scoring units.

The stove, fridge and dishwasher will also need to be replaced.

A recovery sub-committee has been formed to liaise with Council and lead the club to get back on its feet.

Mr Tylee said that the condition of the clubrooms when they first had access was heartbreaking but with help from members and Council they plan to get back to bridge in the clubrooms as soon as they can.

“We know that it is a big job but the help that we have received has lifted our spirits and are looking at coming back bigger and better,” he said.

Ben Cruachan Walking Club

WALKS and activities for July include the club’s AGM which is to be held at the Criterion Hotel in Sale.

On Saturday, July 24 our walk will be to the Holey Plains State Park south of Rosedale.

We will walk Harrier Swamp, Banksia Forest and Long Swamp.

There will be the opportunity to see a wide variety of native plants and if we’re lucky, some of the wallabies, emus and echidnas which inhabit the Park.

The Ben Cruachan Walking Club along with other Gippsland based bushwalking clubs will be hosting the Federation Walks weekend in November.

The 22 walks on offer will be in the Foothills and Southern Alps region of the Alpine National Park.

The event will be accommodated at the Licola Wilderness Village.

Planning is well underway and bookings will open August 2.

The club also has walks arranged for July in Mitchell River National Park and the Baw Baw Ranges.

Baw Baw Shire Council coming to Yarragon

BAW Baw Shire Council’s Rural Outreach Program will visit Yarragon on Thursday, July 8, giving locals a chance to meet their Councillors and Council’s senior management team.

Residents are invited to drop into the Yarragon Public Hall between 4pm and 6pm to discuss the issues that matter to them, with no appointment necessary.

It is the third pop-up Council in this year’s Rural Outreach Program following successful events in Longwarry and Seaview.

All events will be held in accordance with the COVID-19 restrictions of the day.

Rosedale & District Men’s Shed

NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch Latrobe Inc is a group of volunteers that work on many different levels within the community to ensure a safe and secure environment to all people in the Latrobe Valley region.

From sausage sizzles to “Secure number plate” days and supporting the Police in a number of ways, they assist the Latrobe City Council at various events to make a safer community for all people.

They meet at the Morwell RSL on the second Monday of each month

THINGS are progressing slowly to redevelop the shed and our group is working together nicely.

Our June Meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, with any business being held over until the July meeting.

Subject to COVID-19 restrictions our AGM will be July 6, 2021 at 2pm (as previously advertised); preceded by the general meeting at 12.45pm to prevent the meetings going too long into the afternoon.

CWA Moe Branch THE Moe Branch of the CWA has two meetings monthly at the GEST building, corner of Albert and Kirk Street.

The first monthly meeting is on second Monday of each month, starting at 1.30pm and finishing around 3.30pm, followed by afternoon tea. The group meet on the third Monday of each month for craft.

Cancer Council Traralgon Group UNFORTUNATELY our planned Biggest Morning Tea was cancelled due to the latest COVID outbreak in Melbourne.

We are hoping to hold it later in the year.

Our next major fundraiser will be our Soup, Sandwich and Slice lunch to be held at the Traralgon Greyhound Club on Friday, July 30.

Entry is $12 and a delicious lunch will be provided. Raffles, door prizes and a market table will also be run on

MOE zoomed to the top of the LVSL ladder from Falcons after savaging Monash 7-1 under lights on Saturday night, the Red Devils holding a superior goal difference to Falcons, who are on the same number of points.

It was Moe’s biggest win over the Wolves since 2007 when they won 8-2.

Moe had to come from a goal down to completely rout the Wolves. Monash were on the board first at 25 minutes when they claimed a penalty which James McHallam duly converted.

Moe equalised nine minutes later from Connor O’Hanlon, then Matt Shearing scored another on the half time break.

Moe upped the ante after the break and struck on 68 minutes through Tanner Pyle to gain a two goal advantage.

Three more goals over the next six minutes with a brace from Riley Winkelman and Tanner Pyle’s second sealed the fate of a despondent Monash outfit as Moe ran out convincing winners.

THE match of the round between Newborough/Yallourn and Fortuna was just that with Fortuna’s single goal the difference between the two teams.

Fortuna hadn’t beaten NYU since 2015 so the win was the first for most of the current players.

Fortuna have only beaten NYU twice in 16 seasons.

It was tough going for both teams but Fortuna were able adapt a little better despite being away from home.

Damon Scott got the Orangemen on the board 12 minutes into the second half and the Combine couldn’t break the resolute Fortuna for an equaliser.

Although losing, NYU is still in fourth position but Fortuna are issuing a challenge going into the second half of the season.  SALE V PEGASUS

MORWELL Pegasus have been one of the surprise packets of the season so far, and they moved up one place on the ladder to third after their 5-2 win over Sale.

The Flying Horsemen were able to adapt better to the conditions and at the eighth minute Kuku Mahmoud found the back of the net for his first of three, Sale however responded and had an equaliser on the board half way through the first half when Callum Campbell beat the keeper going the wrong way.

Pegasus regained the lead only three minutes later with Bienfat Kagayo scoring to put the Horsemen a goal up.

Further trouble for Sale ensued as from Kuku Mahmoud scored Pegasus third as they led Sale 3-1 going into the break.

After half-time it was a further two goals to Pegasus as they cruised to a 5-1 lead, with Mahmoud completing his hattrick and Kelimet Ramadan popping one through. Sale still plugged away and were rewarded at 81 minutes for a consolation goal from Jacob Richardson.

The victory was Pegasus’s first win over Sale since being readmitted into the LVSL. Overall it was the 49th game against the two clubs with Pegasus having 34 wins.  CHURCHILL V TRARALGON CITY

IT was a historic day between Churchill and Traralgon setting the scene for their 100th clash.

Traralgon City went in as favourites but history had shown that over the years Churchill had more wins over the Roosters.

Contest: Churchill and Traralgon City met for the 100th time at the weekend.

Churchill took the honours 2-1. photograph churchill soccer club Traralgon City winning the first but Churchill now have the bragging rights to winning the 100th clash 2-1.

Churchill’s win was their first over the Roosters since 2015.

It was tough going in the first half with Churchill gaining the lead at 46 minutes when Ray Myers truly converted then they doubled up a quarter of an hour later from Brad Sands to be in a commanding position at 2-0.

But there was still plenty of time for Traralgon City to come back and through good play they scored at 67 minutes from Tom Sawyer.

The Roosters’ joy would only be brief as they couldn’t find an equaliser in the remaining 23 minutes giving Churchill a 2-1 victory.  EAST GIPPSLAND V OLYMPIANS

EAST Gippsland still sit rock bottom on the ladder after posing no threat to Olympians who scored a big win.

Although not their highest score over the Eagles it was still impressive, winning the match 8-2.

Olympians quickly adapted to the West Bairnsdale pitch and Liam Antonelli had them on the board after six minutes.

Further goals for Olympians from Tony Pardo and ex-East Gippsland player Jaydon Steele increased the agony for East Gippsland as Olympians went to the half-time break with a 3-0 lead.

East Gippsland jumped out of the blocks after the break from Josh West and got one past the usually tight Olympians fence but the visitors recovered and posted their fourth within a couple of minutes from Steele again.

As time pressed on Olympians were rewarded with goals from Pardo, Antonelli and Antony Katiforis to go to a 7-1 lead.

The Eagles continued to fight to the death and caught Olympians off guard with their second goal eight minutes before the end from Andrew Chapman from a free kick.

Olympians finished off the match with the last goal of the day from Daniel Cooper with three minutes to run on the clock to win 8-2.

LVSL WOMEN

LEAGUE leaders Fortuna held off a strong finishing Newborough/Yallourn to win 3-2, East Gippsland recovered some pride with a 4-2 win over Monash.

High scoring Sale had a commanding win over Olympians/Tyers 7-0 and Falcons couldn’t be stopped amassing a 22-0 victory over Churchill.

IT is the time of reckoning for Traralgon City and this game against Moe is a must win for the Roosters.

Coming into the match in sixth position against the top team Moe is a daunting prospect for them and their loss to Churchill last weekend would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Moe will be determined to win by a larger amount to stabilise their position on top.

 FALCONS V SALE (SATURDAY, 7PM)

WITH top position at stake Falcons need to pick up goal difference to overcome Moe on top of the table, they need to score bulk goals against the Swans but importantly stop Sale from scoring to maximise the advantage.

The Falcons have had a month off but should bounce back with renewed interest to have an easier than expected win over Sale.

Mixed bag of results Braves, Redsox win for Gippsland FC trio as baseball returns SOCCER GIPPSLAND FC

THE Gippsland’s FC Under-14s faced a challenging fixture away to a Melbourne City FC development squad on Sunday.

The Gippy boys made a good fist of the first half, despite limited possession, however they were shown the benefits of quick ball movement by their City counterparts. A handful of attempts on goal by the Gippsland team came close, however they would go into half-time down 0-2.

The second-half saw much of the same, Gippsland managing to threaten the City goals on the break but they ultimately would conceded three more goals as City showed their class to win 5-0.

Gippsland goalkeeper Jedd Foster was called on to make some telling saves.

Luca Di Corletto, Lucas Halden and Henry Wynne played their usual tough, accountable games while Tanna Leicester and Noah Jackson ran all day to support their team mates.

The division’s top side showed the Gippsland boys a style of play they need to continue to work towards throughout the remainder of the season.

They will be looking forward to a rematch with City in Round 22.

The Gippsland FC Under-15s came away with a 1-0 victory over Berwick City on the weekend in a hard fought match which could have gone either way.

Playing in some trying conditions, Rex Parini was the sole goalscorer for the match, ensuring Gippsland come away with the points.

The result was satisfying and highlighted a number of improvements that the team had been working on during training.

The team is away again this weekend and play top-of-the-table Nunawading, which will be a game that they will be keen to prove themselves in.

The Gippsland FC Under-17 boys made the long trip over the Westgate Bridge to play fourth-placed Altona Magic.

On a pitch that resembled an ice rink, Gippsland FC had a great start, winning a penalty with it being converted expertly by Charlie Cockell.

In control: Gippsland FC youngster Brody Demagistris takes on an opponent. and beat the Altona keeper low and right, giving the away team a two goal lead at half-time. Altona came out in the second half and quickly tied the game at two apiece only for Cockell to find the net again giving the lead back to GFC. A great goal to Altona would tie things up again however Gippsland FC wouldn’t quit, and with desperate defending by Dylan Dunstall and some spectacular goalkeeping from Jared Goodwin the ball ended up with Julian Colantuono who, from outside the box, smashed it left footed to where the spiders live, giving GFC the lead once again.

Hayden Berton would put an exclamation mark on the win with a fine goal, giving Gippsland FC a 5-3 victory.

LATROBE Valley Baseball resumed the winter season on Saturday starting with juniors leading into the Sunday senior competition after pausing the season due to recent COVID restrictions.

Teams were keen and ready to get back on the field as Sale Rangers were scoreless against the away side Traralgon Redsox.

As the Churchill Braves hosted to the Moe/ Newborough Dodgers, Braves taking away the win in the final two innings.

Away team, Traralgon Redsox were the first to make damage to the scoreboard and only one to so between the away team and home, Sale Rangers. In the third inning saw a bright positive for the Rangers hitting a single to the outfield.

Luke Hornstra took to the mound for the Traralgon Redsox. Hornstra surrendered zero runs on four hits over the eight-inning game, striking out nine.

Joel Hector started the game for the Sale Rangers, the pitcher lasted just over five innings allowing three hits, and two runs while striking out three. Raidal and Will Hector entered the game as relief, pitching one and two-thirds inning and one inning, respectively.

Raidal went 2-for-3 in the batters’ box to lead the Rangers in hits.

It was a day for the away side when it came to step up to the batter’s box, Redsox managed to tally up eight hits. J. Ziersch and Spiteri all having multiple hits for the Traralgon Redsox. Traralgon Redsox was quick on the ball in the field with not committing a single error. Gilmore had most chances in the field with twelve.

Final Score 4 – 0. Traralgon Redsox win.

Churchill Braves caught a late lead and were able to defeat Moe/Newborough Dodgers

on Sunday, coming into the 6th inning that’s when the game changed, at the top of the inning is 2-2 until Brett Wilson comes to the bat with a ground out to Braves shortstop – Tim Bellerby and advancing two runners and allowing Dale Simpson to score, putting the score at 3-2. Braves responded with Gregg Duncan with a ground out to advance several runners including Dylan Eldridge who advanced home to even the game, Richard Humphreys with a 1-0 counts singles to left fields advancing Jacob Dickinson and Tim Bellerby across home plate for the Braves.

Two remaining runs were a walk home, a fielder’s choice and allowing Jamie Brierly to score from an error by Ben Zomer.

Mat Prior was the winning pitcher on the day for the braves leading to needed win. The power thrower allowed seven hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out three.

Trent Job took to the hill for the Dodgers, Jobs surrendered five runs on three hits over six innings and striking out six.

Dickinson, Brierly, Eldridge and Humphreys all had one hit to lead the Braves.

Braves had a great day on the field with not making any errors. Gregg Duncan had the most chances on the field with eight.

Dodgers tallied up seven hits. Simon Wilson and Nathan Robinson each managed multiple hits for the Dodgers.

Quartet of favourite sons

WITH a new games record holder at Yallourn Yallourn North crowned on the weekend in Barrie Burnett, the Four Quarters team thought it timely to look at some other long serving players in Gippsland footy.

Burnett belongs in a select group of genuine one-jumper players, as the club to which they belong is part of their identity, and the thought of pulling on another jumper just wouldn’t look or feel right.

Here are four local players that have resisted the temptation and possibly the offer of the king’s ransom to play elsewhere

1. Michael P Duncan (Morwell)

NOT to be confused with the current Woodside coach who is also named Michael Duncan and also had a stellar career at Morwell.

To make matters slightly more confusing, the two Michael Duncan’s played at the Tigers at the same time and had similar careers to some extent, both playing 200 senior games and both awarded life membership.

Distinguishing the two was done by way of nicknames Funky and Chunky, and by way of middle initial on the team sheet - Michael P Duncan (Funky) and Michael J Duncan (Chunky).

The man known as Funky played 300 games for the Tigers.

Such longevity in the Gippsland League is incredibly rare given the demands on travel and training, and is part of the reason most players look to extend their careers by dropping back to a minor league in their twilight years.

Duncan led the senior team in the 2008 grand final and was rewarded with a premiership five years later on the way to back-toback titles.

He kicked two goals in Morwell’s famous 2013 flag, and featured

LD: How good. It felt a bit like the start of a new season. Let’s hope there are no more interruptions.

ZS: Is there much to take out from one round after a three week break in the Gippsland League?

LD: Not a great deal. Perhaps the margin of Drouin’s victory over Bairnsdale was a bit surprising. Even though no team is safe it looks like the Hawks will be fighting Traralgon or Maffra for the last spot in finals.

ZS: Prepared to put a line through anyone?

LD: Assuming it is a 16 round season and you generally need 10 wins to qualify, Warragul mathematically can’t achieve that now.

ZS: A condensed season certainly gives coaches and players something else to think about.

LD: It isn’t totally foreign, the reserves use to play a 16 round season when Bairnsdale didn’t field reserves. Was always a decent bus trip home from Bairnsdale via Straty pub on that bye week.

ZS: Anything else catch your eye in the Gippy League?

LD: Gippsland Power coach Rhett McLennan spotted at the Leongatha-Moe game. He would have had his eye on a few surely.

Done it all: Michael Duncan leads Morwell onto the ground for the 2008 grand final. in the best players in the 2014 decider.

As one of the many coaching graduates of premiership coach Harmit Singh, Duncan also coached the Morwell reserves in recent years.

2. Clinton Taylor (Moe) TAKES the mantle from Moe games record holder Peter Ainsworth in the one-jumper stakes after Ainsworth moved to

Newborough to take on the senior coaching role.

As it stands, Taylor has played 218 games for Moe and in his own words has “never really expressed any interest in leaving.”

The man known as The Reverend has taken on a multitude of roles in his time at the Lions, ranging from junior coordinator, senior vice president and expert master of ceremonies.

enjoying life as a born-again ruckman, Taylor looks set to add a few more games to the tally in coming seasons.

Rewards have come by way of a premiership in 2009, where he was among the best players throughout the finals series.

3. Chris Buckley (Traralgon Tyers United) PLAYING well in excess of 350 games for Traralgon Tyers United, Chris Buckley has won no shortage of praise during a very lengthy career.

The man known as ‘Bucko’ broke the Bombers games record a few years ago when he ran out for game number 355, going past Rob ‘Fish’ Jennings.

Buckley was inducted into TTU’s Hall of Fame in 2018, and has also won a North Gippsland FootballNetball League best and fairest during his time.

He is still heavily involved with the club as playing-coach of the currently undefeated reserves.

4. Brendan Dawson (Trafalgar)

SOMEONE who has just always played footy for Trafalgar is Brendan Dawson.

In a career that would have seen twice as many games had it not been for injury, the ruckman was the runaway winner in a senior best and fairest in 2009 and led the Bloods to a premiership in 2012 as captain.

Rated as one of the best ruckman in the Mid Gippsland FootballNetball League during the late 2000s, the man known as ‘Brick’ has also taken on no shortage of roles in his time at the club.

Across the journey his CV includes junior coach, secretary, senior runner and reserves umpire.

ZS: That was clearly match of the round.

LD: Match of the round in football and netball.

We should mention the netball as the respective coaches were men coaching undefeated teams - surely that has never happened before.

ZS: Speaking of coaches, Paul Carbis would have to be happy with his Leongatha team and their percentage topping 220.

LD: I noticed he coached from an elevated box on the weekend. I’m surprised we don’t see more of that, especially at a venue like Morwell where the facility exists to run a phone from the grandstand to the bench.

ZS: Over to Mid Gippy, which was highlighted by the match between Hill End and Morwell East. Multiple lead changes in the last quarter saw the Hillmen get over the line.

LD: That win keeps Hill End undefeated.

There are currently four clubs all within close proximity to each other in the top part of their respective leagues. Hill End is first, Yallourn Yallourn North is first in North Gippy, Moe is third with just one loss in the Gippsland League and Traf is undefeated in the Ellinbank league. I can’t recall a time when there was as much quality in the one area.

ZS: A great win by Boolarra as well given what they have been through recently. The game between Hill End and Fish Creek in the second last round leading into finals might give us more of an idea of what’s in store.

LD: I have heard Fish Creek are a seriously good team, although when Mirboo North make grand finals they generally win them.

ZS: North Gippy news and Yallourn Yallourn North has a new games record holder.

LD: Yes, Barrie Burnett now stands alone and we send our congratulations to him. An amazingly loyal servant to the Bombers.

ZS: His career has been a lesson in dedication to a large extent.

LD: Very much so. People in football tend to have short memories. It wasn’t that long ago Yallourn Yallourn North was on the bottom of the ladder.

ZS: And we both did actually play footy ourselves on the weekend.

LD: Going through the best players I saw the name Z Standish appear. You must have done well?

ZS: Was lucky enough to get a few touches.

How did you boys go?

We have surely missed a few people.

LD: Very average. After some games I just wonder “are we ever actually going to be any good?”

Fish Creek welcomes the Hillmen

There is little hope the Lions can trouble the Tigers, but what they can do, is what they have done several times this season already, and that is tough it out and win some battles around the ground.

In clashes like this between top and bottom, sometimes it’s easier to forget the scoreboard and concentrate on winning areas of the match. It might be centre clearances or contested football, intercept marks or even the tackle count.

The point being that if teams focus on winning one, two or even three nominated areas of a game, they may well find themselves in the game late in a contest.

The Tigers were a bit rusty last week against Thorpdale, but expect a different Mirboo North side with that run under their belt.

Without question Mirboo North are a top four side, but what they’re after is a top two finish, and top two sides don’t lose matches like this.

 FISH CREEK V HILL END

WITHOUT question the game of the round and for quite a few reasons. Fish Creek are one of a handful of sides that has their sights set on a top two position on the ladder, and five into two just won’t go.

The Kangaroos may have drawn Hill End at the right time too, as the Hillmen, by their own admission have been hit hard by injuries, with at least three of their first choice players unavailable.

The Rovers talent pool runs pretty deep and one would suspect they will need every inch of it when they make the trip to Fish Creek’s home ground.

Another point to consider in games such as this is how much do you give up in order to win a game?

Four premiership points is all well and good, but is it worth giving up too much that could be exposed when the real stuff starts in just over a month’s time?

Both of these teams have experienced and cunning coaches who both want to win, and both will also be looking very closely on who does what, on what works and what doesn’t, all with a view of it working to their advantage come finals time.  BOOLARRA V YINNAR

AS straightforward as this clash may appear on the surface, there are a couple of factors that should be taken into consideration before automatically declaring Yinnar the winner.

The Magpies have not played for more than a month after being scheduled a bye the week after a month long COVID break and now also face a side at home coming off an impressive win.

Some pundits get the feeling the Demons are only one shock win away from believing that they are capable taking their season further than what may have been predicted five weeks ago.

Yinnar certainly has plenty to play for, as they currently sit in fifth place on the Mid Gippsland Football-Netball League ladder, but that is only one game clear of eighth place, so continuing to win is obviously a priority.

The Magpies have already rued being beaten by less than a kick on two occasions this season and given their tenuous position, can ill afford a loss against a side below them at this late stage.

A tip against the Magpies would be daring, but as much as Boolarra can disappoint at times they will make the final aspirant work hard.

MORWELL East’s courageous performance just seven days ago against Hill End will mean absolutely nothing unless it is backed by an equally good performance against another of the leagues very best sides in Foster.

The Hawks finally got off to a flier last week, possibly for the first time this season, and it was that sort of mindset backed by performance that would have pleased coach Devon Soutar. Whether that was a flash in the pan or realisation of what is actually required will be shown in the first 30 minutes against the Tigers this week.

Foster had all the momentum they needed prior to the enforced break, but that will again need to be built. Their opposition last week in Stony Creek was a good starting point, but one would expect the fight from the Hawks to be even fiercer, and when that ferocity is complimented by above average personal and a solid game plan - you’ve got a game on your hands.

Foster wants a top two spot, but if they don’t get over Morwell East this week, that top two spot will be under threat and that might be just enough to have them win the game.

AN intriguing match-up will see two sides who are giving 100 per cent most weeks and although not always winning, are able to generally walk off the ground with their heads held high.

Both teams have attacked sides above and below with an equal amount of vigour and tenacity, and while that is important, what might actually be the difference this week will be ball use, game plan, concentration and conversion of opportunities.

It’s this class component of the game that both sides are working on that will be the determining factor in the outcome.

The two teams have a bye remaining in the final five rounds and remain in the danger zone towards the bottom of the ladder, only a game or two ahead of the win-less Stony Creek.

A win by Thorpdale takes the pressure off them, and a win by Newborough gives them a little breathing space from Stony Creek.  STONY CREEK V MIRBOO NORTH

IF Stony Creek can defeat Mirboo North, even at their home ground, this writer will walk between the two towns for charity.

IT HAS been quite an extraordinary year of change for most football clubs around the country, but none more so than those clubs from the former Alberton Football-Netball League.

Not only have they had to contend with the restrictions placed by COVID, but in more recent times floods have added to their woes, and when you add the fact that they have also had to contend with entering a new 13 team competition, it’s obvious the pressure can start to mount.

It hasn’t broken these two clubs however, and the hope is it has made them stronger and more resilient.

The evidence might not be so obvious just yet, but as both try and find some reason to celebrate some small wins during what remains of this year, planning will also be in place for an improved 2022 season.

Tarwin are likely to have a win this weekend and there is a good chance there will be a few more in the weeks ahead, but possibly not enough for a finals spot.

Toora will have their chances in the final five weeks, but the best they could hope for is to make life a misery for those around them.

THE mother a bloke who, among other things, taught Elvis to dance and helped write the greatest song of all time before living off his investments in an orchard and a fleet of shrimp boats once said “life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gunna get.” The late Mrs Gump may equally have been speaking of the North Gippsland Football-Netball League season, which as recently as last weekend provided a game that was called off early, one decided by three points and one decided by 203 points.

Like watching Chris Matthews with the new ball - if you like variety you get it with the NGFNL most weeks - this week however with the bottom four sides playing each other and six of the top seven also doing battle punters might see a little less left-arm everywhere a la Matthews and a little more Glenn McGrath line and length.

THE local derby between Yarram and Woodside is always a tough battle but this year with the Wildcats perched only percentage off top spot and Yarram just half a win behind, this promises to be a top shelf encounter. To say these two clubs aren’t fond of each other is to suggest the McCoy’s and the Hatfield’s didn’t often share Christmas lunch.

With Yarram seemingly getting their best side back on the park, including ruckman Dirk Mullholland who played his first game last week, the Demons appear to be ready to make their charge. Any side that contains Jack Weston, Griffin Underwood a Vardy or two and provides Chris Bruns and Jayden Shea for oppositions to worry about is always going to be tough to beat - and that’s before trying to put the clamps on young gun Kaleb Pearce who is currently leading the Yarram goal kicking.

This would all sound rather daunting for Woodside coach Michael Duncan if he couldn’t rightfully point out his side has only dropped the one game this year and that was by a solitary point. Speaking of solitary points, if the game turns out to be a close one the Wildcats will be advantaged having already won three games this year by a goal or less. The Wildcats also just happen to have occupied one of the top two spots on the ladder since Round 1 every week bar one.

Rolling along: Churchill will look to continue its good form at home to Heyfield. all capable of kicking double digit goals, so the pressure will be on the ‘Dales midfield brigade to restrict supply.

TWO other clubs with their share of history in the NGFNL are Churchill and Heyfield, and they go head-to-head in God’s own country when the Rick Galea led Kangaroos make the trip to Churchill’s Gaskin Park.

Coming off a hard fought win over Rosedale, where it took all day for the reigning premier to edge ahead, Churchill will look to welcome back several injured players to their line-up for the game. Any or all of Alan Chandler, Travis Brighton, Ben Kearns and Angus Mitchell will only add to the strength of the home side.

For Heyfield, the need to get a win on the board to consolidate their good start to the season is growing by the week. The Kangaroos, who started the year with four-wins and zero-losses have now gone 55 days without tasting victory. Admittedly that number is inflated by the virus vacation

AFTER dropping a close game to Churchill last week things get no easier for Rosedale as they make the trek to Yallourn Yallourn North to take on the ladder leading Bombers. If confidence is key one would imagine the Bombers have it by the truck load having kicked a season high 36 goals 24 behinds on their way to a 203-point victory last time they took to the field. Adding to all of this is the fact Dean MacDonald, the most potent of the YYN forwards, slotted a mere four goals himself.

Given Rosedale has managed to top the ton only once this year, which was against cellar dweller Gormandale, the Blues will need to turn this game into an arm wrestle to be any chance of a win.

The visitors will need to restrict the Bombers well below their average score of 137. This cannot be done in the back half given the home side has MacDonald, Keenan Hughes and Mitchell Luck

THE mighty Saints of Cowwarr will undoubtedly have been buoyed by last week’s result which saw Sale City scrape home for a win over Glengarry.

With Glengarry just a win in front of the Warr, the Saints will have an ambush awaiting the Bulldogs when they roll into town this weekend.

While still a mathematical chance of playing finals, the recent form of Sale City is anything other than that of a finals aspirant. Blow out losses to Yarram, Churchill and Yallourn Yallourn North followed by a three point win over a Glengarry side with a single win will have the Saints amped up to break their duck. With Pat Tainsh back in form and Shane Morgan and Brad McBride finding the big sticks the upset is on.

ROUNDING out this week’s fixture is the battle between Glengarry and Gormandale. The Magpies have been far and away more competitive than the Tigers and anything other than a home town win is unfathomable when the two sides come together this week - it will be the margin that tells the story.

Having been kicked around in the early part of the year nothing would give Glengarry more joy than inflicting a three figure margin on Gormandale.

Beloved Bomber a record-breaker FOOTBALL

ONE man now stands alone as the senior games record holder at Yallourn Yallourn North FootballNetball Club.

Bombers legend Barrie Burnett broke the record when he ran out for game number 320 last Saturday against Gormandale.

The Bombers playing coach broke the record previously held by Wayne Paulet, who was on hand to congratulate his successor.

Running out alongside children Harvey, Tex and Billy, and with wife Kristy there in support, YYN gave Burnett a milestone to remember, chalking up a huge victory.

Both teams formed a guard of honour post-match as Burnett was chaired from the ground.

Reflecting on his career, Burnett said time had flown by since his debut as an 18 year old in 2002.

“I can still remember my first game … it has gone pretty quick,” he said.

“I’m proud to be a one-club player. I grew up watching this club when I six years old. I always wanted to play here.”

Sitting behind the goals throughout the 1990s, Burnett remembers the deeds of the Bombers of the time, as they played in four Mid Gippsland Football-Netball League grand finals in a row and won premierships in 1993 and 1996.

Little was anyone to know the 1996 triumph would signal the start of a 23 year wait for the next premiership, which came in 2019 with Burnett at the helm as playing-coach - a moment he counted as the high point in this career.

“Plenty of highlights throughout but 2019 winning the flag and seeing the happiness around the club was definitely a highlight,” he said.

Burnett was forced to wait longer than most before achieving that prize, with his loyalty shining throughout some tough days at George Bates Reserve.

“I’ve been part of more lows than highs,” he said.

“The last five or six years we’ve been amongst it but other than that I played in three finals in 14 years and two sides where we won one game a season.”

Such dedication to one club serves as a good lesson in commitment to many local players.

Playing generally as a midfielder, Burnett in his prime became known as a true accumulator of possessions who would regularly get 30 touches a game.

He attributed this to nothing overly spectacular.

It was this ball winning ability that saw him take out the Elder-Berwick Medal as best player in the MGFNL in 2007.

Wearing a distinctive long sleeve red and black jumper with the number one on the back for most of the journey, Burnett explained how the number was passed down to him by fellow club great Rick Hearn.

“I started off number 27 and then Rick Hearn had number one, when he retired he handed me number one and it was a privilege to me and I’ve worn it ever since,” he said.

“I’ve always worn a long sleeve, just something that I’ve done. Probably because I’ve got little spaghetti arms."

Hearn is part of a list of many to have coached Burnett at the Bombers, along with Garry Young, Leo Galea, Tony Price, Dale Burridge, David Ivey and Adam Bailey.

Burnett succeeded Bailey as senior coach, who he credited with reversing the fortunes of YYN. “He (Bailey) came in, he had a plan, he had a vision,” Burnett said.

“The people he brought into the club, he didn’t just go out and try and get the best players around, he said he wants to build people who are good clubmen and make the club good and some of those players are still here.

“That’s where I give him as much credit for my success as a coach because he set the standard and I’ve just followed it on.”

YYN has had no shortage of star players in Burnett’s time, and he pointed to Rick Hearn and Wayne Paulet as two standouts, as well as modern day player Tom Hutton and current Bomber Dean MacDonald.

In terms of opponents he rates former Boolarra midfielder Matt Dyer at the top of the list, followed

by Mirboo North pair Shane Peters and Tim Traill and Yinnar's Jimmy Dowling.

Burnett as well has been touted as arguably YYN’s greatest ever player, although the man himself said that was a matter for others to decide.

“If that’s how people see me that’s their opinion.

I’ve just always given my best for the club,” he said.

“I’ve watched and played with players I think are 10 times better than me. It’s probably just the

longevity that helps my case in those things, but I think there are a lot better players that have played for this club than me.”

Burnett said he only ever got close to leaving once, which came after he won the league best and fairest and looked to possibly play at a higher level.

“I realised where I enjoyed playing footy and why I played footy and it was for mates and that’s why I just decided to come back and play for Yallourn North,” he said.

With the Bombers enjoying their first season in the North Gippsland Football-Netball League, and with mateship a key pillar in Burnett’s love of the club, he said life was grand in the current playing group.

“I’ve never played in a group that has such a tight bond,” he said.

As for the man Burnett took the record from, Wayne Paulet, the now former games record holder said the achievement couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person.

“If there was anyone (to break the record) Barrie would be the one,” he said.

“I’ve known Barrie for years and years. I coached him as a kid.

“He always wanted to just play footy for Yallourn North, go nowhere else, just play footy for Yallourn North.

“All the players love him. He’s a really likeable bloke and he can talk to everyone."

Having been the only YYN player to play 300 senior games before Burnett joined company, Paulet joked it had been a “lonely time for a while”.

The 300 gamers work closely on game day, with Paulet an assistant coach.

“He’s very humble in self accolades, he’d rather be part of a team than win personal awards,” Paulet said of Burnett.

With the milestone game done and dusted, the club will look to recognise Burnett’s career in a formal capacity at a later date.

YYN president Evan Sheekey paid tribute to Burnett, saying he was a great role model to all at the club.

“Barrie’s a very intelligent football player and coach, knows the game very well but knows also how to treat a person with dignity and respect,” he said.

“You could say he’s a father figure and best mate to everybody involved at the club across the board.”

“He’s the pinnacle of dedication and commitment to one club.”

Sunday football and local derbies highlight weekend FOOTBALL GIPPSLAND LEAGUE

LOCAL derbies and two Sunday games will highlight Round 11 in the Gippsland League.

While the clash between Traralgon and Morwell carries the Latrobe Valley flavour, the game that will take top billing as match of the round will be between undefeated Wonthaggi and second placed Leongatha on Sunday.

The South Gippsland rivals will face off in a clash that could well act as a precursor to greater matches to come in September.

TRARALGON will play a home game with a slight twist.

Coming up against arch rivals Morwell, the Maroons will need to win to stay in touch with the top five.

Although the on field battle is expected to be fierce, the respect the two clubs have for each other has been shown in recent days.

The game was originally scheduled to be at Traralgon, but the Maroons oval is out of action for the time being due to flood damage.

Morwell, to their credit, has graciously agreed to play the game at Morwell as a Traralgon home game and give the Maroons the canteen, bar and gate takings for the day.

Previous form can often count for little in rivalry matches such as this, as players subconsciously rise to the occasion.

Traralgon edged out Morwell by just three points earlier in the season, and a similar margin is tipped to be seen on the return.

Maroons coach Jake Best lit up the third quarter the last time around, while Matt Northe racked up the touches.

Goal sneak Lee Stockdale played his 150th senior match last weekend, and his craft inside 50 might be the difference in game number 151.

The young Tigers have shown promise this season, but would surely feel they should have more than one win from seven starts.

A win on Saturday will inject a great deal of confidence into the group, and give them reassurance that what they are doing is worthwhile.

MOE takes on Maffra at home.

The Lions sit a game clear in third position and will take on a Maffra team coming off a win.

The Eagles are still a half-decent chance of playing finals, but will need to get a move on before it is too late.

Ed Carr featured in the best for Maffra last week, as did former Moe player Andrew Petrou.

Petrou personifies the ‘looks can be deceiving’ tagline and is often spoken about as one of the

most underrated players in the Gippsland League.

Boasting a supreme work ethic, his ability to get to each contest will give Moe something to think about.

Like a certain Moe cricketer making all the runs, Kristian Jaksch has been kicking all the goals for the Lions, and currently has 18 more than the next best, which has come from a fairly unlikely source in Harri Sim, who surely even he never thought would be coming second in such an area.

While Jaksch has been a focal point, the onus could be on others to help spread the load in front of goal. Midfielder James Blaser has been known to hit the scoreboard with multiples, while Tom Long has a bag of eight to his name in his career.

ANOTHER local derby will take place between Warragul and Drouin on Sunday, while Sale is expected to not only beat Bairnsdale but defeat them.

Morwell, Traralgon to face off Moe hosts race meeting today

NETBALL

NEIGHBOURS Morwell and Traralgon headline Round 11 action of Gippsland League netball this weekend.

Both teams go into the match with four wins under their belt, and will be looking to solidify positions in the top half of the ladder.

The Maroons have built a solid run of form after an indifferent start to the season, while reigning premier Morwell cannot be denied.

Traralgon coach Kate French and Stacey O’Brien are expected to rise to the occasion and their match-ups with the likes of Courtney Garth and Daisy Hill should make for compelling viewing.

Moe will be eager to bounce back following last week’s loss to Leongatha.

The Lions suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Parrots, and have a chance to get back on the winners list against Maffra.

Elsewhere, Leongatha and Wonthaggi meet, as do western rivals Warragul and Drouin.

Cellar-dwellers Sale and Bairnsdale will be out to get a win on the board for their own confidence to possibly avoid the wooden-spoon.

MID GIPPSLAND action will see Newborough

looking to shoot their way back into finals contention as they face bottom side Thorpdale.

After falling by one goal in a nail biting encounter against Fish Creek last week, the task does not get any easier for Stony Creek as they host a confident Mirboo North.

The Tigers are coming off a 63-goal demolition of Thorpdale last week and will be looking to push towards the top two in coming weeks.

Ladder leaders Yinnar are expected to beat Boolarra, Morwell East will be looking to continue their good form from last week with another convincing win as they make the journey to Foster.

Toora should beat Tarwin in the other match.

CHURCHILL and Heyfield will meet in match of the round in Round 9 of North Gippsland netball.

Rosedale will be looking to continue on its way when it travels to Yallourn Yallourn North, while Glengarry will be aiming to do likewise against Gormandale. Sale City make the journey to Cowwarr while top of the table Woodside returns to the netball court this weekend after a week off, and takes on finals aspirant Yarram.

MOE plays host to a bumper nine-race program today.

The meeting is the first at the venue since May 18 and the track was last night rated a Soft 7.

Fresh from her first winner at Geelong last week, apprentice jockey Tianni Chapman has three rides on the program including Nudge Bar for Team Gelagotis.

Nudge Bar caught the eye when a game fourth at Mornington last start over the mile and drops back in class from a Benchmark 70 to a Benchmark 64 for this assignment.

The five-year-old will benefit from Chapman’s 4kg claim when he tackles the latest heat of the Rising Stars series for the apprentice jockeys.

Team Gelagotis also prepares Kamien in the Saviges Road Fast and Ezy Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m), a race which features a strong Moe flavour.

Darryl Blackshaw has Solitary Tramp in the race, while Team Templeton saddle up Changing Tracks, who returns after more than two months off.

Changing Tracks, who won a 1400m Class 1 Handicap at Pakenham in March and then tackled a 1400m Benchmark 70 race at Sandown, has shown a liking for soft tracks during her career.

Fellow Moe trainer Allison Bennett has two runners on the program in Mr Charisma (Race 6, No.11) and the bonny mare Knitting (Race 8, No.13). Catherine Martindale has Longneck Larry lining up in the same race.

Lenny Xuereb has accepted with three runners, debutant She’s Rewarding (Race 2, No.11), Angelic Amour (Race 4, No.1) and Never More Poysed (Race 4, No.16).

Christine Sexton (Ima Dozer) and Mick Templeton (Dome Light) also saddle up runners in Race 4, while Penny Hickey has a debutant in Wicase Tankala (Race 3, No.9).

Racing is from 12.30pm, with the last at 4.30pm.

Beecroft off to Paralympics

Moe export makes her debut with The Matildas

TRARALGON local Emily Beecroft will once again represent Australia on the Paralympic stage after successfully qualifying for the national swimming team ahead of the upcoming games in August.

Joining 31 other swimmers, Beecroft punched her ticket to Tokyo with a strong performance at the national swimming trials in Adelaide last week where she swam personal bests in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly events.

This will be the 21-year old’s second trip to the Paralympics, having competed at Rio De Janeiro in 2016 where she claimed fourth in the 50m freestyle, and is eager to improve on her impressive performances as a 16-year old five years ago.

Beecroft said it was incredibly exciting to be selected as part of the Paralympic team.

“It feels amazing (to have qualified for the games), Tokyo has always been my number one goal as I never thought I would make Rio at 16, so I have always had it in my mind and to finally make the team after a year’s postponement it is just surreal and I am really proud to be representing Australia again,” Beecroft told The Express.

Her commitment to making this dream a reality has been nothing short of extraordinary.

“I pretty much put everything on hold to be able to go to these games, I did university part time and spent most of time training and then going back to my room to study,” she said.

“It has been a lot of sacrifice and dedication but I am really happy that it all worked out, and although I was initially nervous about the year’s postponement I think in hindsight it worked well for me and I was happy to get another 12 months of work under my belt.”

Leading up to last week’s national swimming trials, she described what was a whirlwind month as she quickly fled the state to avoid being caught up in border closures.

“It was a pretty crazy month to be honest, I had to

“I was worried being three weeks out from the trials (and all the drama happening), as it is always important to get your preparation right and I am all about routine so my routine was completely thrown off, but it turned out well and I am very thankful that the Sydney squad took me in.”

Beecroft said the experience of competing at the Olympic trials was extremely rewarding.

“Trials was a really good experience but there were definitely a lot of nerves going to the meet as it is such a big stage,” she said.

“I placed a lot of expectations on myself so to go there and get two personal bests in my main events was a really good feeling and I felt really accomplished leaving the meet as part of the Paralympic team.”

Reflecting back on her career in swimming, she explained what drew her into becoming involved with the sport.

“I am a triplet so I like to do everything that my sisters do, so we all went down and joined the swimming club together when we were 10 years old and absolutely loved it,” she said.

“I tried every sport when I was growing up, but I found out through a swim coach there was this thing called multi-class swimming for people with a disability, so I got classified and just worked my way up from there – I then stayed with swimming because I found it had the best pathway for athletes with a disability.”

As Beecroft now embarks on her second Paralympic Games, the confidence she took out of competing in 2016 is something she said will put her in great stead this time around.

“I definitely feel much more confident (heading into these games), I have now been on four Australian teams so I have got a lot of experience swimming internationally,” she said.

“These games are going to be like none other obviously due to all of the COVID restrictions and things, but I am really glad I have had that experience of what a Paralympics is like and am hoping it works to my advantage,” she said.

In terms of expectations, she said there is some unfinished business after performing so strongly in 2016.

“I would definitely say there is a bit of unfinished business (when it comes to the Paralympics),” she said.

“I am more so just happy I made the team and I will just go over there, do my best, and whatever happens, happens I suppose.”

Wonderful return for the Valley’s hockey players HOCKEY

THE Latrobe Valley Hockey Association is back up and running in all age groups and grades.

The Under 7s braved the cold weather but soon warmed up with some of them going on to play in the Under 10 competition recently. The juniors finished with Under 13s who showcased some developing skills.

The senior women took the field with Moe defeating Churchill 4-1 in a game that was much closer than the scores indicate.

Goalscorers for Moe were Bec Cheater (three) and Ali Mulligan. The goal for Churchill was scored off a penalty corner by Kim Tanti.

The Latrobe Valley men’s team then took the field against Croydon Ranges after Vic League 3 was suspended. It was a fast-paced game and exciting to watch. Latrobe Valley defeated Croydon Ranges 3-1. Goalscorers for Latrobe Valley were

Daniel Godfrey, Ben Lindsay and Lachlan White from a text book flick from a penalty corner.

The senior women finished the afternoon with Rovers defeating an undermanned Traralgon team 7-0. Goal scorers for Rovers were Aria Ranui (three), Penny Kerr (two), Venus Brammall and Eemaan Zafar.

This week there will be three senior games again including another Vic League 3 game when Latrobe Valley men take on Bayside. The afternoon’s matches will begin at 12.15pm with Moe versus Rovers and finish with Churchill versus Traralgon.

Like many sports, hockey numbers have been depleted due to COVID so there is still room for those wishing to return to play as well as those wishing to learn.

Latrobe Valley hockey trains at Federation University, Churchill on Thursday nights from 5pm.

MOE-BORN soccer star Teagan Micah realised every athlete’s dream last week as she made her international debut for the Matildas in a friendly against Sweden.

Micah became cap 212 and the 30th goalkeeper to represent the Matilda’s and started her career in the best possible way, keeping a clean-sheet in what ended up being a scoreless draw at the Guldfageln Arena in Kalmar, Sweden.

Her efforts between the goals saw her recognised as the Rebel Sports Player of the Match by the Matildas, holding her in good stead as they continue preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Speaking after the game, Micah described the feeling of making her international debut.

“I don’t know. I was a bit of a wreck, I was more excited than nervous which is always a good thing. The girls just got around me and just said be yourself, be bold. So I tried my best,” Micah said.

“I mean, it’s such a relief, such an honour. No words can ever express that.

And I mean, I’m just so glad the girls dug deep. We got a clean sheet. So yeah, it’s just a bit more of a positive leading into the Olympics.”

Micah was selected as part of the 25 strong Matildas squad for the recent bout of friendly’s the team played in Europe against Denmark and Sweden.

Focus has now shifted to Olympic preparations, with the Matilda’s currently undergoing a transition camp in Sweden before departing for Japan early next month.

The squad is set to be trimmed to a final 18, who will embark on an Olympic campaign set to begin on July 21 against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium.

The Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority’s One Year Anniversary Our role

2020-2021 Highlights

On 30 June 2020 the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority superseded the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as the overseer of Victoria’s declared mine rehabilitation. Victoria’s declared mines are the Latrobe Valley’s three brown coal mines: Hazelwood, Yallourn and Loy Yang.

In consultation with our key stakeholders, who include community, industry, and government, we oversee declared mine land rehabilitation to ensure a transition to safe, stable, and sustainable post-mining landforms in Victoria. We do so in a transparent, responsible, and objective manner, promoting technical excellence and openness in stakeholder interaction and education of communities in the rehabilitation of mines.

The creation of a well-defined pathway for mining licence relinquishment and long-term management of mine land degradation risks is a major reason for the existence of the Authority.

Our vision is to ensure rehabilitation standards are maintained to provide long term confidence in and value of mine rehabilitation and closure outcomes for Victorian communities and government, building the organisation towards potential future mine land custodianship. In the future we will register, monitor, and potentially own declared mine land post-closure.

Our aim is to facilitate public consultation and involvement in declared mine rehabilitation through our engagement and educational activities. We are keen to ensure that as far as possible everyone can access knowledge regarding rehabilitation progress by providing easily understood and accessible information.

We encourage community members to engage in a public conversation, provide their views, and contribute suggestions on the risks, implications, and planning of various mine rehabilitation options.

Looking back over the past twelve months, the Authority has provided continuity of rehabilitation planning oversight, including providing technical advice in the following areas: • •

Ongoing input into ENGIE Hazelwood’s rehabilitation plans and approvals processes.

Assessing the development and delivery of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy’s (LVRRS) implementation actions, which include assessing alternative non-water rehabilitation options and alternative sources of water for mine rehabilitation.

A statutory review of AGL Loy Yang’s 2020 Work Plan submissions required by Earth Resources Regulation.

Guidance to research groups, including involvement with the newly formed Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME).

We maintained community and stakeholder engagement, during the past year by moving our face-to-face public forums to online formats in line with COVID 19 restrictions.

In the latter part of this first year the Authority focused on recruitment of staff to support its functions, which include ensuring residual risks of declared mine land can be appropriately managed once the licensees have relinquished their mining licences.

The Authority commenced operations, with the appointments of Rae Mackay, the former Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner, as MLRA Board Chair and five Board members responsible for the governance of the Authority. The Board members visited the Hazelwood mine site, where mining ceased in 2017, to familiarise themselves with the type and scale of operations and the progress of rehabilitation and to meet the key site personnel.

August 2020 We completed the review of the AGL Loy Yang Rehabilitation and Closure Plan submitted to Earth Resources Regulation as part of the licensee’s newest Work Plan submission.

September 2020 Our first virtual engagement presentation, to update the Latrobe Valley Sustainability Group on the latest findings for declared mine rehabilitation.

Publishing the first edition of the Mine Land Post our quarterly newsletter. The Spring 2020 edition gave an overview of “who does what in mine rehabilitation” and the next steps for the LVRRS. Copies are available from our website at www.mineland.vic. gov.au/news/publications/

November 2020 Along with the declared mine licensees, the Authority attended the Guidance on use of climate change scenarios for water resource planning for mine rehabilitation workshop for Implementation Action 1 of the LVRRS. The Guidance has since been published and is available from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) at www.water.vic.gov.au/climate-change/adaptation/ guidelines/

December 2020 Tabling the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner 2019 - 20 Annual Report in both Houses of Parliament. This is the third and final report of the work of the Commissioner and his team.

The second edition of the Mine Land Post Summer 2020 showcased important ongoing research into mine rehabilitation, and the many organisations and partnerships focused on delivering new knowledge needed to develop safe, stable, and sustainable landforms benefiting the Latrobe Valley community into the future. January 2021 We welcomed our new CEO David Salmon.

David’s 25 years in senior management roles combined with his skills and knowledge in mine pit void water management and coal mine closure are invaluable assets in tackling the issues and challenges of mine rehabilitation and achieving the goals of the MLRA.

February 2021 Our Board continued to familiarise itself with the major issues involved in brown coal mine rehabilitation with a tour of Yallourn mine. Yallourn mine is scheduled to close in 2028.

We hosted two virtual webinars on the LVRRS Implementation Actions with guest speakers from DELWP and DJPR discussing: Climate Change Guidance (Action 1), Water Sharing in the Latrobe Valley (Action 3), Feasibility of Alternative Water for Mine Rehabilitation (Action 4) and Identification of non-water and contingency rehabilitation options to manage land stability and fire risks if sufficient water is not available (Action 5). April 2021 Our Board completed its site visits of the Latrobe Valley’s mines, with a tour of Loy Yang, where mining is currently scheduled to cease in 2048.

The Autumn 2021 edition of the Mine Land Post connected with the World Water Day theme of raising awareness about the importance of water and the global water crisis. This edition focused on water quality in mine rehabilitation, and also featured Yallourn North Extension Open Cut, a local mine rehabilitation success story. May 2021 Rae Mackay our Board Chair and Rhonda Hastie Technical Advisor attended the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Life of Mine Conference. They presented individual papers entitled: Overseeing Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation and Coal Hole: community engagement using experimental art.

June 2021 The Winter 2021edition of the Mine Land Post featured innovative approaches to mine rehabilitation such as enhancing aquatic ecosystems in pit lakes, conserving heritage and generating post-mining economies, digital innovation, and completion criteria for mine closure planning.
