BREAKTHROUGH Three locals charged with murder of Jarrad Lovison

THREE people have been charged with murder over the death of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison (pictured).

On Tuesday, 24-year-old Moe woman Samantha Guillerme was arrested at a Coalville Road address after Missing Persons Squad detectives executed a warrant.

Ms Guillerme was charged with one count of murder, and a vehicle - a white Toyota - was also seized as part of the investigation and will be forensically examined.

Police yesterday executed a further six warrants across the Latrobe Valley as part of the ongoing investigation.

The first warrant, at a property on Tooronga Road, Willow Grove resulted in the arrest of 28-year-old Jake Brown.

The second, which was executed on March Street, Newborough, led to the arrest of 47-year-old Andrew Price.

Both men were charged with one count of murder.

Each appeared before the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court via video link yesterday afternoon, in separate mentions lasting st g just minutes, utes, where w ee

they were remanded in custody. Ms Guillerme, Mr Brown and Mr Price will all reappear in court faced with individual murder charges on January 7.

Police also executed warrants at addresses on Anzac Road in Trafalgar, Princes Highway in Trafalgar, Adam View Court in Tanjil South and Haunted Hill Road in Newborough yesterday.

As a result two other people - a 44-yearold Trafalgar woman and 55-year-old Tanjil South man - were arrested and released without charge.

action. He was the most well-informed and concerned individual. I was most impressed.”

Cpt Townsend said his priority was helping train and equip under-resourced rangers, as well as establishing relationships with the local communities where poachers were moving through.

“In many places, there was a complete lack of equipment, and some rangers had their toes hanging out the front of their boots,” he said.

“We needed to make it more difficult for the poachers, with more rangers to intercept them so they could change the batting average. The protected areas are huge, with so few rangers on the ground.”

He spent months out in the bush training rangers with teams of local tracking experts, carrying nothing but a backpack and ground mat, and

supplementing meals with bush foods along the way.

“The landscapes are immense, it’s hard to explain how vast they are, it’s primeval.At night you could hear lions moving up and down talking to each other, you learn how to keep yourself safe,” he said.

“Elephants can be very dangerous, they killed one of our British soldiers. But the threat levels were comfortable compared to being in Afghanistan.”

Cpt Townsend is now working with nongovernment organisation African Parks helping secure 19 protected areas from highly organised poaching rings.

He is also working with Federation University on designing an autonomous ground vehicle and drone to monitor vast tracts of land in these protected areas.

A LATROBE Valley man has been made a Member of the British Empire for helping to stamp down on illegal rhinoceros and elephant poaching in sub-Sahara Africa.

Captain Luke Townsend is waiting to be able to travel to Buckingham Palace to receive the prestigious honour for his services to conservation from either The Queen or Prince Charles.

The MBE tops off an already impressive list of accolades including a Sword of Honour, as well as a NATO Meritorious Service medal for taking on the Taliban with the British army in Afghanistan.

Cpt Townsend said a rhino horn can fetch $600,000 USD on the black market, and a poacher can pocket $30,000 USD in an area where the average wage is the equivalent to an English pound a day.

“Rhino horn is worth more than platinum or gold, and rhinos are moving around the park like unsecured gold ingots,” Cpt Townsend said.

“These poachers are ex-soldiers or ex-professional hunters and they have these rare skills to track a rhino over several days.They are very good at what they do and they can be heavily armed.

“We know one poacher killed more than 100 rhinos, he cleared out several national parks, one of my colleagues managed to capture him.”

Cpt Townsend got involved in securing endangered animals by offering his services as a British army corporal to Prince Charles, after the Prince had put out an appeal to “unite for wildlife”.

The Prince took up Cpt Townsend’s offer and was keen to help him deploy some of the necessary resources needed in remote African communities.

Cpt Townsend was also able to meet with then UK foreign secretary and now British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask for more troops on the ground to scale up operations.

“When I met first the Prince of Wales, he said ‘what a thrill to finally meet you’, but I was more thrilled to meet him,” Cpt Townsend said.

“The Prince sat there for 45 minutes and asked me about the things we needed to be concerned about over there.

“He gave me the backing because he wanted

Project is gaining energy

THE Maryvale energy from waste project has taken another step forward as Opal Australian Paper secured just under half of the annual waste stream needed for the project to go ahead.

Opal has signed a deal with waste management company SUEZ to provide 150,000 tonnes per year of commercial and industrial waste to feed the $500 million project.

It has also appointed construction company ACCIONA to build the plant, which promises to operate with “strong local management with a highly capable domestic workforce”.

Abu Dhabi-based equity partners Tribe and Mascar have jumped on board to develop the project.

SUEZ operates 55 energy from waste facilities around the world, while Mascar has interests in

similar projects in Western Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

Opal is aiming to secure 325,000 tonnes of nonrecyclable waste from landfill to generate steam and electricity to power the massive Maryvalebased paper mill.

This comes as Opal lost a bid earlier this year for municipal waste from 16 south-east metro councils to feed the project.

However, Opal strategic projects general manager David Jettner said he was hopeful the company would find the other half of its waste stream by mid-next year.

Mr Jettner said Opal was in the tender process to secure another 55,000 tonnes of waste from six Gippsland local councils, and 70,000 tonnes of waste from Gippsland businesses.

“Businesses are looking for sustainable ways to look after their waste by taking it out of landfill and

into something for sustainable,” Mr Jettner said.

“We are optimistic we can provide a more cost effective waste solution that is better than landfill.”

Mr Jettner said two-thirds of the annual waste volume needed to be secured to get the financial closure for the project to go ahead.

The facility will initially comprise one processing line delivered in time to address the pending closure of south-east Melbourne’s main landfill.

Mr Jettner said they would add a second line if more feedstock could be secured.

The project will reduce Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 270,000 tonnes a year and create 500 jobs in its three-year construction phase.

Mr Jettner said he hoped the project would be ready to start construction at the end of 2021 and completed by 2025.

Attempted break-in, Morwell on Monday

IN the early hours of Monday, five youths allegedly broke into a house on Mary Street in Morwell.

Police believe the group thought the house was abandoned and when they saw someone was inside, apologised and ran away.

The youths allegedly caused damage upon entering the house.

One suspect has been provisionally identified and police are appealing for witnesses to help identify the rest of the group.

Darryl Heathcote wanted on warrant

POLICE are appealing for public assistance to help locate Darryl Heathcote.

The 56-year-old is wanted on an outstanding warrant for armed robbery.

Heathcote is described as 170cm tall, with a medium build, grey hair and green/hazel eyes.

It comes six months after Mr Lovison, 37, disappeared in suspicious circumstances on April 16.

After an exhaustive six-week search his body was located in bushland at Moondarra on May 23.

Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad returned to the region a fortnight ago, unearthing a new lead in the search for information about Mr Lovison’s death.

They revealed he was last seen alive in the early hours of April 16 on Moe-Walhalla Road near the Latrobe River bridge with his green mountain bike after meeting with an associate.

Valley’s new policing unit kicking goals on the beat

The seven arrests were related to drug and weapons charges and Sergeant Chris Skurrie said he expects the crew will “make a big impact on Traralgon”.

Sgt Skurrie said having a specialised team allows officers to focus their energy on particular issues.

“The work we are doing goes beyond what divisional members are able to do in day-to-day work because they are constantly responding to calls,” he said.

“We listened to the community and the challenges they are facing, for example a high number of vehicle thefts in certain areas at the moment.

“We also have this opportunity now because things are a bit quieter for police with the current restrictions.”

Senior Sergeant Howard Jones said the increase in personnel would allow the station to focus on the community’s concerns in Traralgon.

“Traralgon police have been allocated 17 additional officers - almost 50 per cent increase in our constables which is huge - and those officers have already arrived... and we have assigned a lot of those officers to COVID enforcement,” he said.

“It’s an unprecedented increase but it is long overdue given the population and the issues that Traralgon see.

“We have a greater capacity to focus on areas locals have flagged as problematic during our surveys.

“The tasking unit includes a team of officers and as the situation fits, look at drug enforcement, road safety, after-hours patrols; all targeting recidivist offenders.

“We have seen a reduction in crime during lockdown in the Latrobe Valley and our major goal is to keep crime down as restrictions ease.

“We are just as focused on the crimes as you are.”

THERE was little information 35 years ago to convince Helen Braad that the newborn baby she was holding would make real progress in life.

She had just been told by doctors that baby Jonathan had trisomy 21 or Down syndrome as it is more commonly known.

“We were shocked and sort of a little bit upset,” she said.

“My understanding was not much, but we did our own research and straight away decided to do everything we could to support him.”

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of their 21st chromosome.

People born with the condition may have some level of intellectual disability, low muscle tone, developmental delays and health issues, such as heart conditions.

Jonathan was just three when doctors operated on a valve in his heart at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Other than that, and the need to wear a hearing aid, the now 35-year-old is smashing life and stereotypes attached to Down syndrome.

He attended Albert Street Primary School in Moe before completing his secondary studies at Trafalgar High School.

Ms Braad said Jonathan worked at Woolworths in Moe for five years.

He pushed trolleys and helped many elderly customers transport groceries to their cars.

“We got letters of thanks from customers he helped,” she said.

“He loves to socialise with people and will talk to anyone.”

Jonathan also worked at a recycling facility in Drouin and with a disability service for a couple of years.

Despite his disability, Jonathan has always been independent and taught the value of money coming from hard work.

Ms Braad said he saved up enough money to buy a jet ski and has a licence to ride it. Jonathan also has a boat licence.

Low muscle tone did not also deter him from getting active as he works out at home.

Early this year when the family decided to move to Loch Sport from Moe, Jonathan bought a onebedroom home next to his parents.

“We thought it’s a good investment for him as well as to teach him about life like paying his bills because there’s more responsibility as you get older,” she said.

Ms Braad said Jonathan grew up being treated the same way as his older sister and never felt different being around other people.

Renowned for his friendly personality, Jonathan was well-loved in school and at work.

Ms Braad said Jonathan grew up being treated like everyone else so he always felt included which helped his self-esteem to try new things.

Ms Braad said people with Down syndrome may take time to learn new skills, but it didn’t mean that “they won’t get there”.

She encouraged families that have a child with Down syndrome not to get discouraged and “just be there to help them as much as you can.”

Sculpting best-laid plans

YINNAR’S main street will become alive with art next year as the town forges ahead with plans for its biennale Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition.

Organisers are calling for entries from both professional and amateur sculptors and for sponsors to help with the $10,000 exterior and $5000 interior prize for the March to May event.

More than 30 outdoor sculptures will be installed along the main street, with smaller exhibits on display inside arcYinnar, including work from internationally renowned artists.

Exhibits will range from large conceptual public sculptures, through to more figurative or abstract works.

said they were hopeful the outdoor exhibition could go ahead in the midst of so many COVID cancellations.

“It draws people into the town, we see new people checking out the sculptures and they wander up and down to view the art. We are accumulating more sculptures each year,” Ms Allen said.

Ms Allen said organisers were planning weekend workshops and demonstrations, with the return of chainsaw artist Rob Bast, whose work Billy’s Last Muster was acquired by the town in 2019.

Yinnar’s more famous sculptures had been acquired from the exhibition, including the Yinnar Mob main street kangaroos and Johnny B Goode on display outside the pub.

Changes confusing

LOCAL politicians have taken aim at the state government over changes surrounding visitor restrictions, with concerns the new criteria is confusing and limiting.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced regional Victorians could have two people visit their homes each day, excluding infants under 12 months of age.

This rule replaced the previous household bubble, which allowed up to five adults from one home to visit another.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said he had been in discussions with some constituents who were concerned the new restrictions would only muddy the waters.

“Some people have raised their view that the new rules will make family visitations even more difficult with only two persons plus their dependents being able to visit on any one day,” Mr Northe said.

“Previously you could have conceivably have five adults from your nominated household bubble visit

your home but this in some instances has been reduced to two on the same day.”

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath labelled the new visitor restrictions “nonsensical”.

“Once again the devil is in the detail when it comes to Daniel Andrews and his coronavirus restrictions,” Ms Bath said.

“The Premier has attempted to spin the further easing of restrictions in regional Victoria.

“Now Daniel Andrews’ household visitor rule has been strangely capped at two adults only plus dependants, with the DHHS website stating dependants can only join ‘if they cannot be left unattended or cared for in another setting’.

“If two adults were to visit another family member or friend, the consequence is teenage children and/or elderly relatives living under the same roof must be left home under this rule.

“Anyone I live with is my close contact, regardless if they attend outings or not with me.”

Future spin on our history

INFORMATION about some of Morwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic buildings and sites will now be available at the tap of your finger thanks to an innovative project by the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historical society.

Locals and visitors alike will find Quick Response codes stuck on at least five historical sites around the Morwell CBD that allows them to access more information.

Morwell Historical Society secretary Florence Butcher said the idea came to her in the beginning of 2019 and just grew overtime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was growing in my mind that this is what I wanted to do for us,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The QR codes can be found in five interpretative plaques that were erected in 2009 and located at historical sites such as Commercial Road School and St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church on Chapel Street, Alexandra Park on Commercial Road, the Morwell-Mirboo Railway at the Rose Garden and Bills Horse Trough opposite the art gallery.

With some of the writings on these plaques already fading, Ms Butcher thought it was a good opportunity to use modern technology and digitise historical information anyone with a smartphone can access.

She said most smartphones have a QR code reader in their camera app.

A QR code is a type of barcode that contains a matrix of dots in a square shape.

Ms Butcher said people can also download a free QR code reader using the app store that have a built-in history list for offline viewing The way it works is you have to point your smartphone camera against the QR code to scan it which will then take you to the historical societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s site for more information about the building. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the very near future we will be selecting other significant buildings and businesses (in Morwell) and applying QR codes,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Morwell Historical Society president Bruce McMaster was very pleased about the project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can only put a certain amount of writing on the signs and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fading now, but the QR codes are great because you can have three or four pages of information available if you want,â&#x20AC;? he said.

WITH Melbourne Cup and grand final day just around the corner, firefighters are calling for everyone to check their barbecue before firing it up.

While both events will look a little different this year with restrictions in place, Acting CFA Chief Officer Garry Cook said if you are having a barbecue at home with your household to celebrate, it is important to do a few safety checks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before you throw on the snags and chops for grand final day or the Melbourne Cup, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re asking you to check the connections on your gas barbie,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spending a few minutes to inspect the connection before you turn on the gas can keep you and your loved ones safe. And it means you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end up with a crew of firefighters crashing your barbecue.â&#x20AC;?

Acting CFA CO Cook said it was a quick exercise to check your gas cylinder. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The check really is simple; just spray the hose and regulator connections with soapy water before firing up the barbecue,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bubbles will form if gas is escaping. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got any doubts about the connections, turn off the gas and replace the connection or contact a licensed gasfitter.â&#x20AC;?

Local tales in verse

MALCOLM May has released a second book of poetry telling the stories of Gippsland.

I remember when Australian Bush Poetry is a collection of stories, written in verse, that Yarrambased Mr May has been working on for many years.

The latest edition follows Mr Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first book The good old days in Gippsland, published last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have written 250 verses at least, but without the help of friends and family I would never have gotten this far,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people encouraged me to continue writing and to publish these books with all my stories in them, they said everything I would write they could relate to. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every town gets a story or two thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for sure, my stories about the Valley are never-ending, they were just good memories of the people I have met and the places I spent my time in Gippsland.â&#x20AC;?

Mr May moved to Traralgon from Won Wron when he was 15 to work as an apprentice and he eventually became a contractor for Australian Paper Maryvale, where he worked for 40 years.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the poems is titled My Working Life and is about the work I did maintaining roads for APM,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would work on the roads and park my machinery in front of peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s houses and get to know people that way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They would invite me to local parties and events that were going on in the area and they became close friends of mine, many of whom I am still close with to this day.â&#x20AC;?

I Remember When was published with MJB Printing Services, based in Toongabbie and edited

by Mr Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Dom. The book is illustrated with photographs Mr May and Dom had taken over the years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good to have a local person to publish it and there were another group of people who encouraged me to keep writing,â&#x20AC;? Mr May said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My son put a lot of effort into the book as well with photos and editing, he really brought it all together.â&#x20AC;?

ST Michael’s Foundation students have been investigating Fairy-tales.

The focus has been on different types of fairy-tales, what common features they contain, as well the different ways that familiar stories are retold.

The children have been looking at the criteria of fairy-tales; it must start with ‘Once upon a time’, it has a problem and a solution and usually ends with ‘happily ever after’.

Together they have read fairytales and individually composed their own fairy-tale.

To showcase their learning the Foundation students held a Fairy-tale Fun Day. The children and staff came dressed up in something relating to fairy-tales and brought plates of ‘Fairy-tale Food’ such as toadstool cupcakes, treasure chest treats and fruit wands to share for morning tea.

As part of their day, the students had a parade, which the parents were able to view live via Google Meet.

The children had a virtual incursion on a mixture of fairy-tales,

where actors performed several fairy tales that the children studied in Term 3, such as The Gingerbread Man and Little Red Riding Hood.

When asked about the day, Yianni replied, “I loved being Prince Charming so I could be in charge of the kids.”

Foundation Leader Sharon Scholtes said it was an enjoyable day for the school.

“In the new COVID norm it was great to still be able to include parents and to celebrate all the hard work the children have put in this year,” Mrs Scholtes said.

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has welcomed news that the ban on professional school photography in state government schools has been overturned.

Mr Northe said he had previously raised the issue in Parliament and to various state government ministers following concerns raised by many within local school communities and from professional photographers.

“The ban particularly in Regional Victoria seemed to make little sense given the resumption of school for Term 4 had commenced and a number of activities were allowable in our school communities,” Mr Northe said.

“Parents of students had expressed their disappointment in the ban and raised concerns that important milestone events in their children’s school years could be missed in an already disrupted and challenging year.

“Many small businesses who rely upon working within our schools for photography purposes and who create such cherished memories were also terribly upset at the ban on school photography when it was first announced.

“Subsequently I had strongly raised these matters in Parliament and to the attention of the Minister for Education seeking for the ban to be abolished.

“I and many others are pleased and relieved that the (state) government has now seen fit to apply what really is a common-sense decision.”

LUMEN Christi Primary School students were transformed on Monday for Book Week.

The school celebrated Book Week with costumes, a live performance via Zoom and live reading of Collette Dinnigan’s Save the Sea by principal David Cooper.

Lumen Christi librarian Lauren Wilson said Book Week was the first “bit of normalcy” for students who had many events cancelled this year.

“I made the display at the start of Term 1 and I have finally been able to put it up,” she said.

“I was just as excited as the students for Book Week, which is usually at the start of August, but they postponed it this year.

“I am really glad we could do it in some capacity, we usually have a company come from Melbourne called Meerkat Productions who make one of the books into a production, this year they have done that online so the students watched the performance from their classrooms instead.

“We also had David reading to the students via Zoom from his office instead of big reading sessions in the library, we have supported this day in the most COVID Safe way.”

Ms Wilson said the students had a great time dressing up and doing something as a group.

“The students are so excited to dress up and do something together for the first time in a while,” she said.

“Teachers picked a few of the shortlisted books and rotated between classrooms, doing relevant activities with the students.

“The kids were just bouncing off the walls it’s been an exciting day for them.”

ST Mary’s Primary School in Newborough was struck by footy fever when they celebrated the AFL finals series.

Children and staff donned their favourite colours showing their passion for their team.

The footy theme took over the school and the children’s learning as they incorporated sport across the curriculum.

Children got their hearts racing as they worked on agility, tackling, hand balling and kicking skills.

Maths took on a new spin with children making graphs of student’s favourite teams, looking at game scores, percentages and ladder positions. Literacy activities ranged from reading picture storybooks about AFL to completing fact files on AFL and AFLW stars.

Children also took part in art activities by designing new AFL guernseys, making mascot masks and decorating biscuits to look like footy ovals.

Making connections between physical activity and wellbeing was paramount throughout.

Teachers guided children through activities to promote healthy eating, looking at sometimes foods and everyday foods.

They also explored ways to keep a healthy mind, when participating in teamwork and growth mindset activities.

Sport coordinator Nicole Skinner said “the kids had so much fun, it is amazing how well the topic of sport integrates into every facet of our learning”.

THERE were smiles and full bellies all about last week when visitors to the Morwell Neighbourhood House were treated to a special lunch.

Domino’s Morwell delivered pizzas free of charge to the House last week as part of its bid to help those in need with a simple gesture.

Domino’s Morwell franchisee Shri Pandey said the lunch formed part of a broader community outreach program.

“We have gone through a lot of hard times as a community and we are trying to reach out to people who need us as part of community

outreach,” Mr Pandey told The Express. “We want to help those in need and get into the community because as a local franchisee of the business I know it’s hard, a lot of people have lost jobs and everything.

“People were really happy and they are having their meals now we have got a lot of excited friends here.

“The whole point of doing this is because we’re locally owned and operated, I know how painful it is in these times of unemployment, so if we can help out then that’s really great.”

REMAINING votes for council elections need to be sent tomorrow, though it’s important to discuss the east and central ward candidates interviewed on The World This Week on Gippsland FM (Saturday, October 17).

There is still a delusion that coal will drive a recovery. One candidate even mentioned soap and perfume made from coal.

In reality, coal will develop exactly as gold does in Bendigo; when there is a need and it is economically viable, it will get dug up. When not, it won’t. Few of the candidates understand this basic concept.

The young candidates are doing good, but may be too fresh, naive and idealistic. Few of the candidates understand tourism.

I spent extensive years in the hospitality sector. They could have asked for feedback at any time. None did.

One mentioned council ‘staying in their own lane’, another mentioned there would be no ‘silver bullet’ to prosperity.

There was talk about jobs. Yet with so much council managed infrastructure crumbling, it’s only jobs for big industry.

The little painter, carpenter, concretor, labourer and kindred are forgotten. Again, only one candidate mentioned the importance of small business.

Another candidate mentioned there is nowhere affordable for overnight caravanners to stay.

Years ago that was raised locally in Yallourn North.

A person with travel experience said it was a bad idea to develop on, and it was quashed dead.

I stand with Harry

I STAND with Harry Hutchinson of Harry’s Clothing in Berwick not only because Harry is from Morwell.

I grew up with him and bought clothes from him when he first started in the clothes industry at Michael Guss Menswear in Commercial Road in the late 1960s, but also because of his brave stance against the Premier’s unjust and utterly undemocratic lockdown.

And I also stand with worldleading infectious disease experts such as Stanford University’s Jay Bhattacharya, Oxford University’s Sunetra Gupta, and Harvard University’s Martin Kuldorff, who have come together to write the Great Barrington Declaration, pleading with governments not to impose lockdowns to fight coronavirus.

All three professors are highly eminent epidemiologists and their declaration has been co-signed by more than 30,000 medical and public health scientists and practitioners, including 2013 Nobel Prize winning scientist (in Medicine) Professor Michael Levitt from Stanford University, Professor Lisa White from Oxford University, and the University of Edinburgh’s Professor Paul McKeigue.

WORK to repair and refurbish a pavilion at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve is well underway.

The Traralgon and District Agricultural Society received a $157,525 grant from the federal government to complete the works.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the funding would help the agricultural society upgrade the pavilion so it could be used for events and by community groups.

“The Traralgon and District Agricultural Society has faced many challenges over the past few years with inadequate facilities to support the running of the Traralgon Show,” Mr Chester said.

“While the coronavirus restrictions forced the cancellation of this year’s show, it has allowed the society’s volunteers to use this time to make these much-needed improvements.

“The historic craft pavilion was in serious need of work including the introduction of toilets and disability access, roof repairs and electrical works.”

Mr Chester said the society hoped that once finished the venue could be used as a multi-use facility for community group hire, training and social events.

“These works will make the facility safer and more user friendly for the agricultural society and also other user groups, such as NDIS participants and other recreation reserve tenants,” Mr Chester said.

“This project is also supporting local jobs with local contractor J Croft Carpentry from Morwell undertaking the works.

“By putting locals first and employing local contractors, this project is supporting our economy and, most importantly supporting local jobs.”

Traralgon and District Agricultural Society project manager Caitlin Grigsby said the work would improve facilities for upcoming events “We are planning to have the pavilion to be ready for the return of the Traralgon Show in 2021,” Ms Grigsby said.

“This pavilion will be for the wider community to enjoy. It will be great to finally host the Traralgon Show after an extended hiatus over the past couple of years.

“This grant has meant we are able to finally complete these much needed upgrades and have a user friendly and accessible venue for the community.”

The Traralgon and District Agricultural Society received the funding as part of the federal government’s Regional Agricultural Society Development grant program.

More than $630,000 has been allocated to Gippsland through the program including $254,000 for Maffra and District Agricultural Society, $115,190 for Yarram Agricultural Society and $103,393 for Omeo and District Agricultural and Pastoral Society.

GIPPSLAND Water’s position as a Victorian water industry leader has been reaffirmed with a series of recent awards and accolades.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the organisation and a number of its staff had been recognised recently winning key Victorian Water Industry Operators Association (WIOA) awards.

“This year, we’ve really cemented ourselves as a Victorian water industry leader,” Ms Cumming said.

“Last week, our senior water treatment technician Dion Bull was awarded WIOA operator of the year and Gippsland Water Factory operator Michael Tulloch was also named WIOA young operator of the year.”

The organisation was also a grand finalist for the best tasting tap water in the state, beaten only by Lower Murray Water.

Earlier this year, wastewater treatment operator Scott Kitwood received theWIOA ProblemAccepted Solution Supplied (PASS) award with an innovative idea for taking samples at treatment lagoons.

Water quality technical officer Toby Spark has also been named a finalist for the Intelligent Water Networks hydrovation challenge which encourages new ways of solving problems.

The winner will be announced later this month.

Ms Cumming congratulated the employees on their achievements, which reflected recent positive shifts in the organisation’s culture.

“All these awards acknowledge our strong focus on innovation and clever thinking,” she said.

“It’s a testament to our team and their willingness to embrace change, new technologies and approaches.

In Gippsland, we are no stranger to the impacts of landslides and we have seen lots in recent months.

“Landslides can be really unpredictable and give us no warning,” VICSES East Region operations manager Craig Hooper said.

“It is best to stay right away from the area when one does happen, as the slope may continue to move for hours or days afterwards.”

Anyone living in or visiting fire affected areas should be extra careful.

If you happen to come across a landslide which is covering a road, impacting on private property or similar, call VICSES on 132 500 or Triple Zero (000) if there is a life threatening emergency.

“Landslides can cause a range of other problems if they aren’t attended to quickly,” Mr Hooper said.

“Call us (VICSES) and we will make sure the scene is safe until the landslide itself can be dealt with”.

There is a place like home in heart of Yinnar DID you know there is a retirement village located in the heart of Yinnar?

The Yinnar & District Housing Development’s Greenside Retirement Village was opened in 1993 after a group of concerned Yinnar residents decided it was time for the town to be able to provide retirement accommodation for its elderly residents.

Yinnar resident Ray Linton along with a dedicated group of locals came together as a working group to investigate the possibility of building a facility in Yinnar so elderly residents didn’t have to move from the area.

The village consists of seven two bedroom units and four one bedroom units.

The two bedroom units have a garage built under the roofline and the single bedroom units have carports.

Today, 27 years after the first residents moved into the village it is still a safe and friendly place to live with a real sense of community.

The units are very comfortable and maintained to the highest standard.

The village is owned and run by the community.

A volunteer committee of management is responsible for the running and upkeep of the buildings and surrounds.

NOMINATIONS are now open for the Baw Baw Shire Australia Day awards, offering an opportunity to recognise groups and individuals for their contribution to the community.

Each year, council’s Australia Day Awards program shines a light on the unsung heroes and organisations who selflessly give their time and expertise to help others and make Baw Baw a better place.

These individuals and groups consistently volunteer for charity work, contribute to community initiatives, demonstrate leadership and continually strive to improve the overall community.

Nominations can be made in three categories: Citizen of the Year: A person who had made a noteworthy contribution during the previous year, and/or given outstanding service to the community over a number of years.

Young Citizen of the Year: A person aged under 25 years who has given outstanding service to the community.

Local giving in Latrobe vital for sick children

UNCLE Bobs Club (UBC) is partnering with Latrobe Regional Hospital to raise $4500 for a new vitals monitoring device as part of the club’s Local Giving for Local Health program.

From now until November 5, the community will be able to donate online via mycause.com.au/latrobe in a Virtual Wheelbarrow Push or can contact Tyers Group Secretary on 5174 5360.

A map on the UBC website will track money raised with distance travelled around the region.

The Wheelbarrow Push is a proud part of UBC’s 78-year fundraising history, and is part of the Good Friday Appeal efforts each year.

THE 25th annual Gippsland Antiques and Collectables Fair, which was to have been held at Kernot Hall, Morwell on the last weekend in November has reluctantly been cancelled this year because of the current pandemic restrictions.

Tutors sought

EXPRESSIONS of interest are being sought from qualified or soon-to-be qualified teachers for tutoring roles in Catholic schools throughout south-east Victoria.

Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale Maria Kirkwood said that tutors would be employed to work with teachers in their efforts to further assist students requiring additional support following the extended period of remote learning.

“Tutors will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of expert classroom teachers, in order to target teaching to address the needs of these students,” she said.

Faltum’s Stars face Renegades first-up

CRICKET: Newborough export Nicole Faltum and her Melbourne Stars open the WBBL season on Sunday with a clash against the Melbourne Renegades at Hurstville Oval.

All eight WBBL teams are being housed at the Olympic Park precinct in Sydney.

This year’s tournament will be played in a five-week window, culminating with the final on November 29.

The Stars are looking to improve on a bottom placed finish last season, where they won just two of 14 matches.

The addition of Meg Lanning and English ace Katherine Brunt will help bolster the Melbourne side.

The Stars will then play Sydney Thunder in Game 2 at North Sydney Oval on Monday.

Siddle’s Tigers in command CRICKET: Peter Siddle’s Tasmania was right on top after two days of the Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia.

Siddle claimed 2-30 in 18 overs as the South Australian side was bowled out for 195 late on day one.

The former Test ace made the early in-roads, having Jake Weatherald caught at slip for four.

Streets of Avalon top-weight for Sale Cup HORSE RACING: Group One winner Streets Of Avalon headlines the list of 35 nominations for Sunday’s $200,000 Sale Cup. Trainer Shane Nichols did accept yesterday for the Schweppes Crystal Mile on Saturday at Moonee Valley, so it looks unlikely the 2020 Futurity Stakes winner, who was given an impost of 63kg, will contest Gippsland’s richest race.

Upgrades are complete LOCAL players, officials and their families have something to look forward to as they return to Tyers Recreation Reserve after a disrupted year.

Work to replace the roof and ceiling of the clubrooms, used by groups like the Traralgon Tyers Football Netball Club, is now complete.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the $50,000 project was funded with money from the federal government.

“Clubrooms are the heart of local clubs and a space for teams and their supporters to gather and enjoy each other’s company and hold events,” Mr Chester said.

“The old roof was rusted and buckled and this upgrade ensures the club rooms remain in good condition, accessible and user friendly.

“The project also supported local jobs with local contractors, including Harles Plumbing and Langden Constructions from Traralgon, engaged to complete the works.”

Mr Chester said the work at the recreation reserve was just one of the projects in the Latrobe Valley funded through the Drought Communities Program.

“This program is helping Latrobe City to undertake local infrastructure projects and

other activities to support areas impacted by drought,” Mr Chester said.

“This is a way to help affected communities by boosting local employment and procurement, while also addressing social and community needs by investing in infrastructure improvements that will bring lasting benefits.

“Other local projects funded through the program include the rebuild of Flynn Hall, Toongabbie township improvements and a new storage shed for the Yinnar and District Historical Society and Museum.”

Long-serving president Dell stands down CRICKET

THE Gippsland Goannas Veterans Cricket Club held their annual general meeting last week.

Long-serving president Peter Dell stood down from the position, and his efforts for the club since the inaugural season, 2011, were recognised with acclamation.

The new president will be Kevin Lanigan, with Geoff Wells elected as vice-president.

Ian Gibson will continue as secretary, as will Ray Smith as treasurer.

Neil Meredith and Ian Southall were elected as committee members.

Many others in the club will be asked to accept other roles, which will be finalised over the next few weeks, as the club expands.

There will again be an over-50 team entered into the VCV competition, as well there will be several over-70 games.

The latest news from VCV has penciled in November 15 as the start of the season, with games between regional teams to be announced soon.

It is still uncertain when we will be able to resume games against the metro teams.

TDCA prepares for Round 2 action

CRICKET TDCA

THE TDCA moves into Round 2 but as last round was completely abandoned due to rain it still has the feel of an opening round spectacular with all clubs incredibly eager to get on the park and get among the runs and wickets.

This round will have a different feel to it as well due to the matches being played tomorrow which is quite a rare occurrence.

Over the years there has been T20 matches and finals played on Friday evenings and around the turn of the century, Good Friday was used as a spare day for the regular season grand final, but there has never been a whole regular season round scheduled on a Friday so prepare for a historic day of TDCA cricket.

Match Of The Round is a grand final rematch from last season with Toongabbie taking on Ex Students.

Toongabbie have lost a few from the team that competed for the flag last year but are still confident in a big season.

The Rams have had to get creative to fill the spots of the three Hughes’ and Anthony Scott which will give plenty of opportunity to their younger players and to those being able to commit to more matches this season like Kev Stoddart and Sam Moran.

Ex Students on the other hand have improved their list from last season, but will still be driven hard by the regular stars who have continually shone bright for a very long time now.

Prediction: Ex Students will be keen to get their season going and will want to replicate their efforts of last season’s grand final where they smashed the Rams.

THE FORECAST does not look promising for Round 2 of Latrobe Valley District Cricket League action scheduled for tomorrow.

It looms as a further blow after the opening round was a washout.

Rivals Latrobe and Morwell are scheduled to square-off at Peter Siddle Oval.

The Sharks are expected to field a similar looking side to last season apart from a new captain in gun all-rounder Chris Johnson.

Morwell also has a new man at the helm in Jordan Campbell, who pointed to the Tigers fielding a younger-looking side this season with imports Lewis Harper and Luke Gettings not returning, while last season’s leader Robert Webber is now at Centrals.

Expect a cracking contest between Raiders and CATS if play gets underway at Yinnar Recreation Reserve.

The hosts are tipped to be missing a few players from last season’s impressive outfit, while CATS have welcomed back opening batsmen Josh Keyhoe and Jamie Cochrane.

Jordan Pickersgill, an opening bowler from Koonwarra in the Leongatha competition, has also joined the club.

It will be a similar scene when JeeralangBoolarra and Churchill meet.

The Panthers landed a prized recruit in former Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Sanitha De Mel during the off-season.

But the Cobras are always a difficult team to beat, with the likes of captain Brendan Mason, John Keighran and Steve Warr in the line-up.

Moe makes the trip to Mirboo North for another cross-conference contest.

The Tigers have been boosted by the signing of Sri Lankan all-rounder Madura Perera from Korumburra, but the Lions have also welcomed some past players back including Joel Mitchell from Casey-South Melbourne.

Traralgon West host Trafalgar at Jack Canavan Oval.

Luke Sumner (Moe) and Hayden Kimpton (Latrobe) have joined an Eagles side, which contains one of the league’s top batsmen in Tim Fitch.

Trafalgar will field the bulk of the side which lifted them to last season’s A Grade title, spearheaded by captain Rhys Holdsworth.

The Ships have been bolstered by the return of all-rounder Blair Clymo from Casey-South Melbourne.

Centrals have the bye.

Key man: Anthony Scott will lead Yarram and District’s fortunes tomorrow.

Expect the same to happen here as the Sharks are going to make a big statement this round and hit the ground running.

The Whisper: There’s some big noise coming out of Toongabbie at the moment about Brandon Krieger and his development over the winter.

Krieger has featured mainly in lower grade cricket over the last few years but is now shaping to be the Rams X-Factor in season 2020/21 and may just catch the Sharks off guard.

Yarram & District will be buzzing at the prospect of playing their first official A Grade match under the Pelicans banner when they take on Imperials at Stoddart Oval this week due to Gormandale having the bye and Catterick Crescent not being fit for play yet.

Yarram may be having a few selection issues early in the season with their players wanting to

play mainly in Yarram, but once the likes of Dylan Rash and Jack Moore get keen to make the journey Yarram will be all the better for it.

Yarram’s captain Anthony Scott enjoys playing at Stoddart Oval as he has nearly 100 runs to his name in his last two innings which of course included a back to the wall 64 in last season’s losing grand final so Imperials need to prepare well for him.

Speaking of Imperials, they may have their own selection issues with an injury cloud hanging over Brad Sizeland.

No doubt the old warrior will be wanting to get out and play for his beloved Imperials and will be doing everything he can to be cleared to play.

Prediction: It’s hard to say as both clubs seem to have had a few issues with their preparation to the season. Both clubs have X-Factor and class

so it will be a case of whoever turns up to play the hardest will take out this match.

The Whisper: Imperials played host to a few Alberton cricketers last season who have now returned to take the field for the Pelicans. Has the banter started already and could it be a defining factor in this result?

The final match of the round finds Glengarry being hosted by Rovers at Duncan Cameron Park.

Glengarry are chomping at the bit to show off their big recruit in Nat Freitag and there is no better place for a star batsman to make an impact on the league than at Duncan Cameron which is the best wicket in the TDCA. It’s not all about Freitag though as Glengarry also boasts last season’s LH Cox A Grade player of the year in Al Jenkin who is a brilliant cricketer and one of the best, if not the best opening batsmen.

Jenkin and Freitag are going to be spending a lot of time in the middle together and if Rovers don’t get them out early we could see a huge partnership between these two players this round.

Rovers shouldn’t be discounted in this match-up though as the young guns came to play in their opening round fixture against the Magpies last season.

Prediction: On paper it’s expected that Glengarry will romp it in but never underestimate a young and vibrant team like Rovers early in the season. Another match which this writer is sitting on the fence with so let’s just see how this one plays out.

The Whisper: Justin Little is rumoured to be available for this round which is a great addition to Rovers. The young gun has a good record against his former club so expect a big game from last season’s Black Cap recipient.

Goannas display impressive form

VETERANS CRICKET GIPPSLAND GOANNAS

THE three veterans cricket clubs in Gippsland got together on Sunday at the SCG, the Sale Cricket Ground.

Members of the Gippsland Goannas, the South Gippsland Kookaburras and the Iona Oldies arrived early to ‘select’ teams for an 11am start.

The wicket had been well covered so played well, while the outfield was not wet but it was lush and hence a bit slow.

The 11 players from SG and Iona, were joined by two over 60 Goannas, while three junior (over-50’s) and four senior (over-70’s) Goannas joined with some legitimate 60+ year olds.

The hand sanitiser was in demand and face masks were in evidence. Even the ball had to be sprayed regularly during the innings.

The Combine batted first with Mark McLauchlan (formerly Longford CC) and Barry Cain opening, while they faced off against Ian Southall and Rob Bacchetti. Batters were to be limited to 30 balls, but many did not survive that long, while bowlers were to bowl four-over spells.

The best of the visiting batsmen were Peter Felstead, Ron Lovel, Peter Anton (GG), Russell Vincent, Jeff Phillips and Alby Matthews.

Recruit Rino Metlikovec was among the better Goanna bowlers, with 2 for 1 from three overs, while Murray Moore, Gordon Cowling, Fred Debono and Barrie Nunn each claimed a wicket or two.

After 40 overs, nine wickets had been taken, and four batsmen either retired or were not out, with 82 runs scored.

Eleven different bowlers had been used.

In the field good catches were taken by Metlikovec, Jamie Freeman, Nunn and Gary Rose, while Ian Gibson had two good stumpings behind the wicket.

Under COVID rules players bring their own drinks and lunch, which unfortunately takes away one of the best traditions of weekend cricket!

After the break, Ray Smith and Geoff Kinnish opened the batting for the Goannas, while Vincent and Gary Adams opened the bowling.

Col Carmody batted attractively before he committed suicide on Neil Meredith’s bowling, and was run out.

Others to bat well were Metlikovec, Graeme Ingle, Debono, Ken Bailey, Moore and Southall, while Lovel, Anton, McLauchlan, Jim Rowley and Felstead took wickets.

Peter Little’s fielding led to the run out while Trevor Vincent also had a bowl.

The score was 8 for 161 after 38 overs, with 13 batting and Bacchetti and Gibson declining a hit.

It must be noted that Freeman was unlucky to be given out to a horror lbw decision (made by a fellow Goanna), while batting a yard down the crease, and the ball swinging prodigiously, well, a lot anyway.

THERE will be more stars than the Milky Way involved with the 2020 Geoff Watt Memorial Fun Run. This year’s event has gone virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic and while it has presented some challenges, opportunity has also knocked.

Race director Kathy Watt confirmed that a number of Australia’s household names in athletics would be taking part.

The list of stars is headed by 1988 Seoul Olympic gold medallist Debbie Flintoff-King.

Marathon legends Steve Moneghetti and Robert DeCastella are both on board as ambassadors..

Moneghetti was the first entrant out of the blocks at Ballarat in the men’s 10km event.

They have been joined by Olympic gold medallist Glynis Nunn, Olympic bronze medallist Judy Pollock, Olympian Charlene Rendina and Olympian Maree Holland.

Pollock, now 80, completed the fun run event with a friend in a time of 3 hours, 30 minutes.

Jared Tallent, the Olympic gold medallist in the 50km walk in London 2012, has also confirmed his involvement as well as former marathon worldrecord holder Derek Clayton.

Watt said the support of the Olympic legends was significant for the event, which runs from October 18-31.

“Due to restrictions still in place in Victoria, the Fun Run will be a virtual one from your location and can be completed over several days,” she said.

“You can do the 2.5km, 5km, 10km or halfmarathon.This year it’s a participation event with the emphasis on fun.

“You can enter at www.geoffwattrun.com.au, like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/geoffwattrun and join the 2020 Geoff Watt Memorial Fun Run Group where you can upload six photos or videos and go in the draw for some great prizes.”

LEVENDI continues his Melbourne spring carnival campaign in Saturday’s $500,000 McCafe Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).

The Latrobe Valley ace drops back in grade to the Group 2 staying feature on Cox Plate Day on his most recent appearance against Arcadia Queen and Russian Camelot.

Assistant trainer Manny Gelagotis said the six-year-old stallion had reached a critical part of his preparation.

“I think that (Moonee Valley Cup) looks a really good option for him,” Gelagotis said.

“This is D-Day on the program for him, he ran well in the Makybe Diva (first-up), the JRA Cup was terrific.

“We threw him in the deep end (in the Caulfield Stakes), purely because there was a bit of rain around and we thought the track would be affected.

“We were under no illusions Arcadia Queen and Russian Camelot were clearly the best horses, but we wanted to give the horse a chance to tell us whether he was at that level.

“While the race was a sit and sprint and didn’t quite suit him, we felt he was slightly disappointing.”

Levendi tackles the race fourth-up and yesterday drew barrier one in the 13-strong field lining-up for this year’s edition.

Jockey Jason Maskiell remains in the saddle, having partnered the son of Pierro in all his runs this preparation.

Levendi was last night rated a $16 shot with Bet365, with Miami Bound, Polly Grey and Carif installed as $5.50 equal favourites.

The Moonee Valley Cup will be run at 3.30pm.

Levendi still holds an entry for the Melbourne Cup on November 3, although he is 54th on the ballot order.

He has also been nominated for the Group One Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in Perth on December 5.

YALLOURN Yallourn North has hit a snag in its bid to defect from the the Mid Gippsland league.

Member clubs voted down the Bombers’ application to leave at a meeting on Monday night.

The Bombers took to Facebook to announce the news, branding it “a very disappointing outcome for both our club and Gippsland football in general”.

“Tonight the MGFNL executive and member clubs voted to reject our application to disaffiliate from MGFNL,” it said.

“By no means has this decision affected our clubs willingness and enthusiasm to join the NGFNL in the 2021 season.

“In fact, quite the opposite, it has further empowered us to ensure our local community voice is recognised and acted upon.

“Although disappointed in the outcome we have always planned and are ready for this result, this is just another step in our 2021 journey.”

The club will now appeal the decision with AFL Gippsland, and a precedent has arguably been set after Trafalgar’s appeal to leave was green-lighted.

“YYNFNC will now lodge our appeal documentation with AFL Gippsland, who will determine the outcome without self interest as a determining factor,” the Bombers said.

“AThe YYNFNC thank our local community for their continued support, we will keep our valued members updated as information comes to hand.”

The departure of the Bombers would leave the MGFNL with 13 teams, but the league maintained it would work towards a “14 teams strong” competition for 2021.

“The member clubs of the MGFL, with the best interests of football in our region at the forefront of their decision, decided that Yallourn Yallourn North FNC would remain in our competition for 2021 and beyond,” it said.
