Company reveals route from Bass Strait to the Valley

STAR of the South has reached an “important milestone” by revealing its overland transmission route to plug in a two gigawatt offshore wind farm from Bass Strait into the Latrobe Valley.

Star of the South chief development officer Erin Coldham said they had spent the past 12 months looking at three potential routes before settling on the most technically feasible option.

The proposed route would come to shore at Reeves Beach and travel underground through Darriman, Giffard West and Hiamdale, and connect to either Hazelwood or Loy Yang.

Ms Coldham said this route would now be taken through to detailed planning, approvals and design stages with further community engagement.

She said they had chosen the route after discussions with landholders, who

she promised would be offered “voluntary agreements” with the company.

“We have confirmed the route will take to detailed planning and design,” Ms Coldham said.

“On balance, the route we’ve selected for further investigation is the best overall outcome and we’re working with landholders whose property may be suitable to host the underground cables.”

Ms Coldham said the company had

rejected other options which posed technical constraints or impacts on marine and state forest environments.

She said the proposed corridor would be about three kilometres wide with a 40-metre easement, using underground cables.

Overhead lines would be used where it was not technically feasible or where they would have a lower impact.

Contractor appointed for rail upgrades

VICCONNECT has been appointed as the contractor to deliver the Gippsland Line Upgrade’s major package of works.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, State Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan and Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing made the joint-announcement on Tuesday.

VicConnect is a consortium comprising UGL Limited, Decmil and Arup.

The rail upgrades between Pakenham and Traralgon are expected to deliver more frequent and reliable train services.

“This investment in the Gippsland Line is all about improving train services for people in the region, now and into the future,” Mr McCormack said.

“This major package of works Gippsland Line

Upgrade will deliver even more benefits for passengers and local industry and is yet another example of our record $110 billion nationwide infrastructure plan getting people home sooner and safer while driving our economic recovery.”

The improvements include duplicating track, extending the Morwell crossing loop, upgrading level crossings and signalling, adding second platforms at three stations along the line and reactivating the second platform at Traralgon.

The second platform at Morwell Station has been redesigned after consultation with Latrobe City Council and the local community to improve connectivity with the bus interchange.

Mr Chester said the works would allow Traralgon trains to travel every 40-minute between the peaks and give passengers a more reliable service.

“These upgrades are absolutely vital to keep the communities of Gippsland connected to each other and to Melbourne,” Mr Chester said.

“We’ve seen the benefits of this investment for local suppliers and local employment - there has never been a better time for this investment to help the local economic recovery from COVID-19.

“We’re investing in the people of Gippsland and the future prosperity of the region.”

Early works for the project are already underway with the contractor carrying out signalling and track inspections while trains weren’t running in February due to level crossing removal and V/Line maintenance works.

Site investigations and surveying will continue in the coming weeks at Bunyip, Longwarry, Morwell and Traralgon to support major construction ramping up in the coming months.

Ms Allan said prioritising local workers and companies was a big focus for the newly appointed contractor.

“With more than 25 local contractors and suppliers taking part in construction of the new Avon

River Bridge, we’re putting local workers at the heart of this project,” Ms Allan said.

“This larger package of works will deliver even more benefits for the local economy - and will mean the Gippsland Line Upgrade has created more than 500 vital local jobs for Eastern Victoria.”

Ms Shing said the contractor would host industry briefings in the coming months for local contractors and suppliers looking for opportunities to participate in the project.

“Our contractors will open a project office in Morwell later this year - making sure we can work closely with the local community throughout construction and get Gippsland businesses involved,” Ms Shing said.

The project also includes upgrades to drainage structures at Morwell River and a Victorian-first trial of solar-powered wireless level crossing detection technology at Farrells Lane in Stratford.

Rosedale car fire

WELLINGTON Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a suspicious car fire which occurred at approximately 9.45am on Saturday, February 27 in Rosedale.

Police were called to a pine plantation after a vehicle was discovered alight by a passer-by.

Traralgon bike theft

POLICE are seeking assistance to identify a person described as: Male, approximately 35 to 45 years old, caucasian, wearing black coloured ‘Lonsdale’ hooded jumper with white stripes along arms, dark pants, dark runners, and of medium build around six foot two inches (180cm).

Police believe that this person can assist with enquiries in relation to an incident on Saturday, February 6.

The incident occurred at approximately midnight at a business premises on Argyle St, Traralgon where a Specialized Carbon E-Mountain bike valued at $13,000 was stolen.

POLICE are seeking assistance in relation to an incident at a business located on Fowler St, Moe on Sunday, February 14 around 8.15pm.

The alleged, who appears to be a male in his late 40s and bald head, initially entered the premises in bare feet, wearing black shorts, singlet, and baseball cap.

He left the premises 15 minutes later wearing boots, dark pants, and a camo hoodie jacket and carrying a dark suitcase full of clothing items.

Star of the South is also talking to the Australian Energy Market Operators about grid connections, and which option would offer the best capacity.

“The great thing about the Latrobe Valley is there is a lot of capacity, since Hazelwood retired in 2017 and now Yallourn will exit in mid-2028, we feel there is the capacity there,” Ms Coldham said.

“It’s just a matter of which projects come in and out over the coming years, this can effect where we will connect.”

Star of the South is proposed to be located off the coast near Yarram, and is in its early feasibility phase with site investigations and environmental studies underway.

Ms Coldham said the estimated $10 billion dollar project could offer thousands of local jobs in construction and turbine maintenance.

She said the amount of jobs would depend on the ultimate size of the project and they hoped to start construction by the middle of the decade.

STAR of the South has entered into discussions with EnergyAustralia and state government bodies about offering transition opportunities for displaced Yallourn workers.

Star of the South is proposing a two gigawatt offshore windfarm off the coast of Reeves Beach which could provide 20 per cent of the state’s energy when built.

Star of the South Chief Development Officer Erin Coldham said the wind farm had the capacity to replace Yallourn and could be operating by the time the coal plant retired in 2028.

“The community is looking for opportunities for transition, jobs or contracts in supplying for the windfarm, and this is what we want to talk to people about,” Ms Coldham said.

The project is in its feasibility and offshore licencing stages, but construction could start by the middle of the decade, according to the company.

Ms Coldham said the project could offer thousands of ongoing local jobs in constructing the windfarm as well as servicing the turbines at sea.

She said the Latrobe Valley offered similar skills sets that could be transferred over to offshore wind, along with those from the oil and gas sector.

Ms Coldham said Bass Strait also offered the opportunity to supply summer peak-demand electricity, due to a meteorological link between hot weather and strong winds.

“We believe Star of the South has a role to play in the energy transition, out at sea the winds are stronger and more consistent, and we can have larger turbines that can capture more wind,” she said.

She pointed to the latest technology being used in the United Kingdom, in which one turbine spin could power the average British home for two days.

“This is remarkable technology, we are excited to progress this in Gippsland where we think is the best place in Australia for offshore wind,” she said.

ETU Gippsland organiser Peter Mooney is on the Star of the South advisory committee and said he hoped the project would “get off the ground” as coal generators closed.

Mr Mooney said Star of the South had been “upfront” about its local procurement commitments to create as many jobs for Gippslanders as possible.

“If brown coal generation is going out the window we need to move to new generation, we hope it gets the green light,” Mr Mooney said.

“It’s one of the projects that could be a replacement for Yallourn, but it must be viable too at the same time.

“It will be great for construction, long term jobs and will fill a void in the energy market and will keep prices down. But it’s still a long way off.”

A FORMER Latrobe Valley coal-fired power station worker is optimistic about the region’s energy future, but also acknowledged that transition will be “painful”.

Former Hazelwood engineer and Yallourn technical officer Chris Barfoot said Gippsland had the competitive advantage to usher-in new industries by the time Yallourn closed in seven years.

“It’s not doom and gloom but it’s about how we will change, we still should be a centre for power generation, but it won’t be with coal, we have a lot of things ticking over that will start to happen,” Mr Barfoot said.

“Each of these transitions will hurt, but we need to start to build hope and come up with a plan to detail what will change. This

NATIONALS Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath is calling for a Parliamentary Inquiry into the local economic impacts of the impending closure of the Yallourn Power Station.

Ms Bath is also asking Parliament look into the ongoing local impacts of closing the Hazelwood Power Station in 2017.

“This is really about paving the way for a vibrant community rather than one of job losses and industry loss,” Ms Bath said.

“Let the closure be a catalyst for change, but it must be driven by real people in the Valley.”

The issue was debated in Parliament yesterday afternoon, on the back of last week’s announcement that EnergyAustralia would close Yallourn in 2028.

Ms Bath was calling for the government and cross-benchers to support examining the expected economic impacts of the closure and options to offset job losses from the plant.

She was also calling for Latrobe Valley-based hearings with the input from industry, business and community groups, as well as the tertiary sector to hear how long term jobs could be created.

“What are all the jobs that can be replaced?

There must be an analysis. Let’s look at all other genuine opportunities for alternative power and let the experts ride this change,” she said.

“This must encompass a raft of industry and job creation, this could be in renewables or hydrogen. I’d love these to be investigated.”

Ms Bath also wants to look at how the Latrobe Valley Authority has helped the region transition, and the impact of departmental funding cuts made in successive state budgets.

“Let’s look at the closure and impact of Hazelwood and the success and failures of the LVA in terms of long term and sustainable job creation, and let locals have a say on their future,” she said.

“We’ve seen liveability infrastructure built by the LVA, but when the ribbon is cut, what have we got?”

Mr Barfoot pointed to opportunities in Star of the South offshore wind, emerging solar farms popping up around Gippsland and the concept of pumped hydro above the Thomson Dam. He also cited the right set of circumstances to install large scale floating solar on the Yallourn and Hazelwood mine voids, should they be turned into pit lakes.

“And once you add big batteries into the mix, along with pumped hydro, you will have a secure supply, now we have to push ahead with all the approvals for these things,” he said.

The Latrobe Community Power Hub project officer said these projects needed to be developed alongside local manufacturing from green energy. He added this would enable the Latrobe Valley to take advantage of the

growing global demand for decarbonised products and avoid any carbon taxes.

Meanwhile, ETU Gippsland organiser Peter Mooney wanted to be assured that skilled workers would be lured to stay in the region, with local and long-term jobs.

Mr Mooney said the union had met with the Victorian treasurer Tim Pallas and Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to make sure EnergyAustralia stuck to its promise to support exiting Yallourn workers.

“The seven year lead-in time is fantastic, you have to commend them on that, but where will workers go after that?” Mr Mooney said.

“We hope we can have another worker transfer scheme in the future, but who knows where this will go? We have a skilled workforce in the area, but it is shrinking.”

Sculptures will turn heads in Yinnar YINNAR is being transformed into an outdoor public art space with the Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition to be officially opened on Sunday.

About 40 large scale outdoor sculptures have been installed throughout the town’s main street along with 73 smaller works displayed at arc Yinnar.

Visitors can also enjoy free live music and workshops each Sunday for the seven-week show, and take part in mosaic-making, stone

carving, indigenous weaving or wood burning.

This year’s show is featuring some well-known established artists from all over Australia exhibiting alongside emerging local sculptors in the biennial event.

It includes wire artist Tom Ripon whose animals are scattered about the town, with a Yellow Dog on the pub roof, and a Blue Panther surveying Yinnar from above the local cafe.

Other highlights include the debut of local artist Mick Bolding with his lobster-form Jasus Edwardsii, Mark Niglia’s giant horse Phoenix on

Jumbuk Road and Aimie Whiting’s giraffe Darcy.

This year will also feature the return of renowned chainsaw carver Rob Bast who will be producing a sculpture for the town, after his previous work Homage to Billy Hillier is going on permanent display.

Exhibition organiser Tony Hanning said the sculpture exhibition is making art more accessible to those who may never step inside a gallery.

“People have the opportunity to be a critic, once it’s in the street they don’t have to go into a

gallery, they can make a judgement about what they like,” Mr Hanning said.

“Many people are not keen to go into a gallery and here people can see things they would not normally see, it’s making art very accessible in a beautiful regional setting.”

Artists are up for $11,000 in prizemoney with a $1000 people’s choice award on offer.

The Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition runs from March 21 to May 9.

I think 13 years is way past time to complete this project.

Their predecessors who should have benefited from this second stage, have grown up and moved on. We are well and truly over the consultation and ‘expression of interest stage’.

Ready for a new tomorrow

WITH the inevitable early closure of Yallourn ‘W’ Power Station finally announced (A Dark Day The Express 11/3/21), those of us who could see it coming like the Hindenburg can now offer a sigh of relief, and get back to what we were already doing - preparing this region for a new tomorrow.

There is a claim often touted suggesting there are few ongoing jobs in renewable energy.

In fact, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss has repeated this fallacy on numerous occasions, including on Gippsland FM late last year around the time of the elections.

Ignoring the pros and cons of each technology for a moment, work is underway to bring Australia’s first offshore wind farm into fruition - the $10b Star of the South.

It will offer 740 ongoing jobs when operational off the coast of Gippsland (Coal jobs in the wind - Herald Sun 12/3/21).

Even if that number is exaggerated by double, that would still mean 370 ongoing jobs for the life of the project.

Then there is the Delburn windfarm proposal for the Strzelecki Ranges, together bringing the numbers close or well above 500 jobs that will be “lost” at Yallourn.

Also sprouted by Councillor Middlemiss on the same radio station last year was that if people want to go on a holiday they would just go to bigger tourism localities such as Walhalla - suggesting that Latrobe City was ill-placed to capitalise on the tourism dollar.

Again this is far from reality, with many people and families on low to medium wages being unable to afford expensive holidays, and therefore looking for cost effective hideaways to keep the expenses to a minimum.

The annual median wage has been about $50k for the last decade. So few people can regularly afford the lavish lifestyle Cr Middlemiss refers to, other than, of course, well paid industry workers.

Within Central Ward, which includes Morwell and Yallourn North, incumbent and stalwart Cr Middlemiss received 2580 votes.

Tracie Lund, who was newly elected, announced her candidacy at the very last minute, and received 2478 votes.

There is a difference of merely 102 votes between someone who arrived last minute to the starting line, and someone who has been in the same tired seat for over two decades - supporting the jobs of well paid big industry workers while much of the other 80 per cent of the local population has lived in depression and squalor.

You don’t need to be Nostradamus to see what’s coming, you just have to pay attention to what’s around you, and understand primary school arithmetic.

MPs should fight for energy jobs

HOW reassuring that our local MPs Darren Chester and Melina Bath think that the early closure of the Yallourn Power Station is a “sad day” and a “difficult pill to swallow” (‘MPs raise issues around the lack of a Latrobe Valley transition plan’, The Express, 11/3/21).

This is a major economic blow to hundreds, if not thousands, of Latrobe Valley households who face the loss of the incomes that support their lives and families, not to mention the businesses and industry that rely on the affordable and reliable power that only coal can provide.

In saying that the workers should receive their wage and redundancy entitlements, the National Party MPs are really only saying that EnergyAustralia should comply with employment laws.

They speak of “transition” and “reskilling”, but in so doing, show they are throwing in the towel and surrendering without a fight. Where is the passionate advocacy on behalf of our community and economy?

It shouldn’t be hard for Mr Chester and Ms Bath to fight for energy jobs.

Other Federal Nationals MPs like Barnaby Joyce and Matt Canavan are constantly in the media emphasising the importance of coal power to our economic wellbeing and the need to protect those jobs. If Mr Chester doesn’t know how to take a stand on this issue, perhaps he can ask his federal colleagues to help.

As for Ms Bath, she might be nice enough but it seems she is too timid to defy her colleagues in the State Nationals, who gave up on local energy jobs long ago.

Her leader Peter Walsh likes joining schoolkids at climate change protests and the deputy leader Steph Ryan told The Age newspaper that she thought the Paris Accord targets weren’t harsh enough. Who will fight for local jobs and point out the obvious fact that getting rid of reliable base load coal power is bad policy?

Shing on Yallourn closure

ENERGYAUSTRALIA’S decision to close the Yallourn Power Station in 2028, as national and global energy markets continue to change, is an incredibly tough announcement for the Latrobe Valley and a history that spans generations.

In these circumstances however, we have something we haven’t had previously; time.

We have seven years to prepare and plan for transition as Victoria’s oldest coal-fired power station prepares to close, and EnergyAustralia has agreed to work closely with the Victorian government over that period.

As part of ongoing discussions with the Victorian government. EA has agreed to: ■ keep Yallourn open and retain current employment, and continue apprentice and trainee programs until 2028; ■ implement $10 million support and transition package; ■ maintain existing regional support programs; and ■ build a 350MW Battery at the Yallourn site by 2026.

Work is already underway to plan for a careful, well-resourced and worker-focused transition and the success of this transition will depend upon collaboration and cooperation between industry, unions, and all levels of government.

In particular, I look forward to the Commonwealth government’s engagement with medium and longterm transition planning and support for Yallourn, and other power stations around Australia.

I also hope that federal funding will enable affected communities to diversify local industry and economies into the future, alongside support and funding from the Victorian government.

I’m determined to continue advocating for local communities, unions, workers, and other stakeholders, so that the Victorian government can support a power industry that is competitive and sustainable.

These conversations aren’t easy, but I don’t believe it’s fair or responsible to pretend that the future of the power industry will look the same as its past, especially here in the Valley.

I strongly believe that there is an enormously important opportunity for all levels of government to work constructively alongside communities, workers, industry and unions, and to implement a transition that sets up the Valley for generations to come.

And I strongly believe that this will be guided by investment in infrastructure, industry attraction, and liveability, which are all continuing to grow and develop across the Valley. The work goes on.

Support small business

HUNDREDS and thousands of small businesses that were caught up in the Labor Government’s snap five-day lockdown, are completely ineligible for any support.

But while Daniel Andrews won’t support small business, he’s spent more than $700,000 of taxpayers’ money buying himself likes on Facebook.

There are 300 small business owners scrambling to repay tens of thousands of dollars they don’t have after a stuff-up saw them paid for grants the government now says they weren’t eligible for.

Among them is a cooking school in Mirboo North that owes $20,000 for the Labor Government’s own mistake.

Where will small businesses that are already under so much strain they have had to seek financial help find this money?

Too many Victorians are already up against the wall after three lockdowns, while the threat of more continues to decimate business confidence.

It’s a stark contrast to New South Wales where good contact tracing and a ‘last resort’ approach to lockdowns has seen the state stay open for business.

Small business is what drives this economy. It’s what creates jobs.

But until the Andrews Government can get the basics right, it’s only a matter of time before Labor’s lockdowns deliver the knockout punch.

Four new job advocates to be based here THE LATROBE Valley will welcome four advocates under the Jobs Victoria Advocates scheme.

The quartet are among five based throughout the Gippsland region and 112 across the state who will work on the ground in libraries, community halls and shopping centres as part of the state government’s $619.4 million Jobs Victoria plan.

“A job is the foundation on which you can build a better life, for yourself and the people you love,”Acting Premier James Merlino said.

“With targeted, specialised help we’ll get more Victorians back to work and our state’s recovery back on track.

“Our Jobs Victoria Advocates will hit libraries and shopping centres to offer the specialised help that many people need to find work.”

The advocates will work with people that have lost their jobs due to the effects of the pandemic and the long-term unemployed, with access to employment services, training opportunities and other support.

They will be joined by hundreds of mentors and careers counsellors as part of the state government’s $619.4 million Jobs Victoria plan to return thousands to the workforce.

The Jobs Victoria fund aims to support both Victorians looking for work and businesses looking to grow, with wage subsidy payments of up to $20,000 available to employers who take on workers, with a focus on women over 45 and others who have been hardest hit by the pandemic.

The advocates will connect people with local training providers, careers counselling or more intensive support.

More than 40 organisations will host Advocates right across the state, including local councils, community bodies, organisations focused on supporting women and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Traditional Owner groups are also important hosts.

From next week, Victorian small and medium businesses, sole traders, local councils, social enterprises, universities and not-for-profits will be able to apply for a share of more than $250 million in supplements to create new jobs for at least 10,000 people.

at Trafalgar High School among other projects during her 12 years in Trafalgar.

Sue attended the Term One school assembly where she was thanked by principal Jane Mersey for her volunteering.

In response, Sue shared her philosophy the parish of Trafalgar was bigger than St Mary’s Anglican Church and takes in all the community.

Call for commitment

WOMEN in Gippsland called on the ten State and two Federal Members representing Gippslanders, to share their commitment to act to make their parliament a safer place for women to work.

Women in Gippsland said it is concerned about the rise in reports that federal and state parliamentary workplaces are unsafe for women including female politicians and staff.

We are distressed to hear the first-hand accounts that a culture of sexual harassment appears to be commonplace, for many parliaments across Australia.

On March 9,Women in Gippsland partnered with Baw Baw Shire Council to celebrate International Women’s Day 2021.

More than 500 women attended a forum, and many more watched via live stream, to hear inspirational stories from a diverse panel of speakers.

Speaking at the forum, Women in Gippsland cofounder Kerry Wilson announced that on behalf of the organisation, fellow co-founder Ruth McGowan has written to the 12 state and federal members of Parliament representing the various electorates across Gippsland.

“Women in Gippsland has invited individual MPs in our region to share their personal commitment to act to address violence against women and sexual harassment,” Ms McGowan said.

“Every woman who works in state or federal parliament, either as a politician, staff or volunteer has a right to be protected from sexual harassment and bullying, as is expected in other workplaces.

“We invite our local members across Gippsland to tell us what action they will personally take to ensure that their parliamentary workplace is safe for women, because it’s time for our leaders to act.”

Boost ahead of the football-netball season WITH less than a month to go before the start of the local football-netball season, local clubs were given a boost this week by an announcement from the state government regarding crowd numbers.

Community football-netball clubs and leagues will not be required to go through the same public health approval process that they were previously required to go through, in order to have crowds of up to 5000 spectators.

For local matches expecting crowds of under 5000, the event will be designated a ‘Low Risk Tier 2 Event’, meaning organisers still have to ensure the government’s COVIDSafe requirements are adhered to, without seeking formal approval.

Head of AFL Victoria Brad Scott welcomed the news.

“This is a really positive development for community football across the state, especially clubs and leagues expecting large crowd numbers,” he said.

“We are continuing to work closely with the Victorian government on a daily basis and advocate for community football, and the situation has been evolving quickly since we were in a lockdown only a few weeks ago.

“We thank the state government for understanding AFL Victoria’s position on the challenges faced by community football clubs and volunteers,

working with us and considering community football as guidelines evolve.

“With this latest development, community footy will be as close as possible to ‘back to normal’ when the season starts, which is really exciting.

“It will be great see big crowds at community football matches while kids will be high-fiving and can have parents, grandparents and family watching their junior footy games. These are all parts of community football that Victorians love, and it’s fantastic to have the season nearly here after the year we had.”

Builder of health facility announced THE Mirboo North & District Community Foundation has announced Langden Construction of Traralgon as contractors to build a modern and spacious medical clinic and allied health facility on the main street of Mirboo North.

As announced in August last year, the Mirboo North & District Community Foundation are building this facility to realise their joint vision with the Mirboo North Medical Centre: to improve healthcare in our district, by ensuring sustainable and expanded access to GP bulk billing and health services for future decades.

“We are tremendously excited to have reached this point after a very busy year for the volunteers on our Project Control Group,” Community Foundation chair Paul Pratt said.

“Land on Ridgway was purchased, a state-of-the-art medical facility was designed, the planning permit was obtained and a tender process carried out. The appointment of Langden Construction and the award of the planning permit, means that the activity will be much more visible to the community in the coming months, running up to our targeted completion date of September 30, 2021.”

Once built, the spacious medical facility will be leased to Mirboo North Medical Centre, which will enable the major general practitioner Sonya Moncrieff and her team to expand their services: there is room for four full-time GPs and access for various allied health professionals to rent rooms so that people from all age groups that reside in the community do not have to travel as far to receive expert healthcare.

“We are thrilled that the planning phase of this project has been completed so quickly and look forward to the building being completed with much anticipation,” Dr Moncrieff said.

“The current curtailed space means we have had to turn away extra doctors who want to work in the area in the past, as well as only offering a limited amount of allied health services.

“Our move to this new facility in October 2021, will allow every person in the area to access a much more comprehensive health service.”

A NEW podcast to show case this Gippsland region when it comes to news, places of interest, peoples of interest and events commenced on March 1.

Podcast host Sale’s Allan Gray said the timing was right for the launch.

A LOCAL cookbook aimed at creating easy, healthy and delicious meals was launched recently.

Some 30 contributors took their recipes from their homes to collate them into the book.

The Latrobe Food Security Coalition, known as Food For All Latrobe Valley, worked for two years to produce the book, and took the opportunity of the launch to share a meal with recipes taken straight from the book.

Food For All Latrobe Valley product implementation officer Gabrielle Francis said it was exciting to be able to distribute the free cookbook to households.

“The cookbook launch is a much-anticipated occasion celebrating local people, local stories and local produce,” she said.

With Gippsland famous for its fresh produce, the book has made use of local knowledge and offers many insights into how to to prepare, cook and serve various dishes.

Food For All Latrobe Valley food security officer Claire Tartaro said the book was as much about people as it was food.

“The cookbook is not just for the recipes but also to inspire the community to get involved through hearing stories about food and identifying with local people and sharing recipes to get into the kitchen to cook an easy meal,” she said.

On the menu at the launch was falafels with tahini sauce and chilli con carne and legumes, while dessert was the classic apricot or apple crumble or fruity pancakes.

Food For All Latrobe Valley is a community led initiative working to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for all in the community, and is finding by the Latrobe Health Assembly.

In line with Lardner Park’s comprehensive COVIDSafe plan, all tickets must be purchased online for contact tracing.

Daily crowds will be capped at 12,000 people.

The new three day program includes a “twilight trade” day on Saturday when Farm World will remain open until 7pm.

The program includes: Friday, March 26: 9am to 5pm - Farmers’ Day. Saturday, March 27: 10am to 7pm - Twilight Trade.

Sunday, March 28: 9am to 4pm - Farming Families’ Day. Every exhibitor also will have COVID plans in place for their individual sites, with equipment and displays regularly disinfected to maintain a safe environment.

The carpark shuttle bus service also will be cleaned after every run.

Lardner Park chief executive officer Craig Debnam said people would not be admitted without a pre-purchased ticket.

“We need it for contact details so we urge people to please adapt and please change with us. We have a robust COVID plan and keeping the community safe is at the forefront of everything we do,” he said.

Another major change will be the move to a three-day program from Friday to Sunday.

Mr Debnam said the move to a three-day program was largely driven by the exhibitors.

They surveyed 600 exhibitors to determine how Farm World should be staged.

“We didn’t want Farm World to become a big market and lose its heart and soul. I don’t care if it’s not the biggest but it has to be the one they value the most so that exhibitors know they have been listened too,” Mr Debnam said.

St Vincent’s makes a splash in swimming events ST. Vincent’s physical education program got off to a flying start at the Otto Ford swimming meet held at the Morwell Leisure Centre.

Two other schools Morwell Park and Sacred Heart were also in attendance to compete against their peers.

Determination and perhaps, time spent swimming over the recent summer holidays, held the swimmers in good stead, as speed and style were evident at every stage of the day’s activities.

COVID restrictions prevented the attendance of family and friends, still the camaraderie of all swimmers was evident, as the pool deck erupted in cheers and encouragement during every race.

St Vincent’s success that day meant all 25 students advanced to the division level held at the Moe Outdoor Pool on February 24.

As at the Morwell meets, they competed in the 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and relay events.

Swimmers from a wide area, who had qualified at their district meet, arrived on the day full of excitement and great expectations.

Even before they entered the water every student was a winner for turning up on the day and pitting themselves against other students, some of whom may have their friends, a sibling or relative.

Successful division competitors progressed through to the Gippsland Region Championships.

This was held on March 11 at the Aqua Energy outdoor pool in Sale.

Swimmers from as far afield as Lakes Entrance and Warragul enjoyed a pleasant autumn day showcasing their swimming prowess.

St Vincent’s was represented by Grade 6 student Milana.

Milana finished second in her heat of the 50m freestyle.

She was very proud of her achievements and so she should as she improved on her previous time.

As was evident during all the meets, it is not only the ability to swim fast these students displayed.

Indeed, everyday life skills were on show, determination, persistence, endurance and enough positive thinking to maintain speed, especially when one’s legs feel like jelly.

Well done to all the competitors at the aforementioned events.

Keep up the good work, you never know where your attributes may take you.

Trafalgar High students take on the wilderness BETWEEN March 1 and March 5, Trafalgar High School’s Year 7 form groups travelled to Licola in East Gippsland to stay at the Lions Club Licola Wilderness Village.

The youth adventure activities chance offered students the chance to enjoy a range an adventure and challenge activities including canoeing, high ropes, rock climbing, giant swing, and bush cooking.

The township of Licola is owned entirely by the Lions Clubs of Victoria and southern New South Wales.

Rotary baton meets fun run ROTARIANS from Morwell and Traralgon took part in the Latrobe City Community Fun Run last Sunday.

They used the occasion to conduct a Rotary baton relay during the event run by the Traralgon Harriers.

The baton was designed to mark the 100 year anniversary of Rotary in Australia.

It was originally intended to be carried in relay around Australia, but COVID regulations and border closures made that impossible.

Instead, separate baton relays are being held throughout the country.

The idea for the baton relay came from Rotarian Linda Humphries, who took part in Sunday’s event along the Waterhole Creek walking paths in Morwell.

Mrs Humphries was joined by her husband, Mark Humphries, the current District Governor.

Mr Humphries said that the baton was being used to highlight the involvement of Australian Rotary clubs in their communities over the past century, and their continued commitment to the needs of local communities.

A relay team of seven Rotarians from Morwell and Traralgon clubs carried the baton for the

5.25km Fun Run course and received a warm reception at the finish.

Traralgon Harriers and local Rotary clubs have had a close working relationship for many years.

Funds raised in the Fun Run events were being donated to a local Rotary project, Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, an accommodation facility for patients and families undergoing cancer treatment at the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre.

In addition to the relay team, a group of local Rotarians acted as marshals to ensure the safe conduct of the event, particularly where road crossings were necessary.

LATROBE City Council is reminding homeowners and builders to engage a private building surveyor to gain the necessary building permits and ensure they do not undertake illegal construction works.

Council successfully pursued legal action against a property-owner in relation to breaches of the Building Act 1993.

Charges were brought as a result of the property-owner failing to obtain a building permit and failing to comply with a building order in relation to the extensive construction of a dwelling extension and alterations.

The property-owner undertook these works without first obtaining a building permit.

Council issued a building order to stop work until the matter was resolved by bringing the extension and alterations into satisfactory compliance with the Building Regulations.

The property-owner failed to comply with that order as the work on the extension and alterations continued during the enforcement process.

The property-owner was found guilty on both charges and incurred fines and costs of $26,500, including a criminal conviction for failure to comply.

“Council officers have the responsibility to ensure home renovators comply with the Building Act to ensure that buildings meet minimum safety standards,” Mayor Sharon Gibson said.

“This reassures the current and future owners of a home that any works have been done properly and safely.

“This case is a reminder that before any homeowner, building developer or handyman decides to initiate building works, they should check with council or a private building surveyor to confirm if a building permit is required.”

“While some may feel that this could be seen as council playing ‘Big Brother’, council has a role to play in ensuring the community’s safety.”

Achievements of region’s small towns applauded

THE achievements of small towns were celebrated at the Latrobe City Seven Small Townships Annual Forum in Traralgon recently.

The forum brought together representatives from the small township associations or neighbourhood groups in Latrobe City.

Small communities across Latrobe have had many reasons to celebrate in the past year, from offering cheap meals to people in need, through to holding community gatherings and cleaning up a flora reserve.

The groups represented at the forum were: Boolarra Community Development Group, Glengarry Community Association, Toongabbie Township Group Inc., Traralgon South and District Association, Tyers and District Community Association, Yallourn North Action Group, Yinnar and District Community Association, and Hazelwood/ Jeeralang Neighbourhood Group.

“The tireless work that volunteers undertake in their communities to deliver activities, events and infrastructure improvements to improve the wellbeing of all is very much appreciated,” Latrobe City Council Mayor Sharon Gibson said.

People at the forum discussed key topics such as succession planning, networking and how council can work with township associations to continue the valuable work they do.

Dana Hughes from Non-Profit Training delivered a presentation about succession planning and renewal, which focused on planning for the future.

Teacher’s national honour

ST Joseph’s Primary School art teacher Kathy Grass is among 50 finalists for The National Teacher-Artist Prize 2021.

The prize was established to reward teachers by celebrating the value and quality of their individual art practice.

St Joseph’s principal Trish Mulqueen said she was delighted for the popular teacher, who runs the Trafalgar-based school’s art program.

“We are so very proud of Kathy and the work she does at our school,” Ms Mulqueen said.

“Our art program is second to none and the students love the opportunities that Kathy presents to creatively express themselves.

“Kathy is a fine artist herself and she truly loves teaching art to the students. It is fitting that Kathy’s artwork has been recognised nationally.”

Ms Grass’ entry is entitled #Homeiswherethe heartis and is a 3D needle felted artwork.

“To be selected as a Top 50 finalist out of 760 entries is a great honour for me as a teacher of art and a creator of artworks,” Ms Grass said.

“I am passionate about art in general, but especially needle felting.

“To have my felting artwork selected and recognized in a mixed media art competition is very special as felting is often just thought of as a craft rather than an art.

“My artwork was based on a special photo that was sent to me by a friend in Belgium and it gives me great pleasure to think that the special connection between my friend and her tiny dog has led to this honour... as it encompasses my love for my art and dogs.”

The finalists will be on display in Melbourne for several works before the Best In Show is chosen, along with seven highly-commended awards.

A Peoples’ Choice Award will also be announced.

Recycled glass in new road trial

Photo competition underway IT’S time to grab the phone or the camera and head out to one of your favourite watery spots and enter the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority’s (WGCMA) Water for the Environment Photo Competition.

The overall winner will receive a $250 shopping voucher to use in their local community.

“The idea is to remind people how wonderful the rivers in West Gippsland are,” WGCMA chief executive officer Martin Fuller said.

“Here at the CMA we have a small team of people who work with community groups and other agencies to ensure our waterways are in the best possible condition.

“What we’d like is for people to get out during March and take the best possible photo of one of the rivers that receive flows under the Water for the Environment program.”

Water for the Environment is a program that sees managed flows released into a river that has a storage or dam in place.

The goal being to assist the river in its environmental needs and to maintain the waterway in as good a condition as possible.

In the WGCMA region the waterways that receive

water in the Water for the Environment program are the Latrobe River (anywhere downstream form Lake Narracan), the Macalister River (anywhere downstream from Lake Glenmaggie), the Thomson River, including Heyfield wetlands (anywhere downstream from the Thomson Reservoir) and the Lower Latrobe Wetlands (for example Dowd Morass, Heart Morass and Sale Common).

Prizes will be awarded in each category, as well as a prize for the best youth photo.

“What we’re looking for are photos that might capture someone’s favourite spot or people simply showing what they love doing on or near the water,” Mr Fuller said.

“The waterways that receive Water for the Environment are special places which we know many people have fond connections to. Really this competition gives people an excuse to get out and take some photos and if their photo is judged to be one of the winners, they get to support their local business community too.”

The WGCMA Love our Waterways Photo Competition is open until Wednesday, March 31.

LATROBE City Council is excited to be part of a trial that will see asphalt containing recycled glass laid on a Traralgon road.

One of council’s road surfacing contractors, Gippsland Asphalt, a subsidiary of Fowlers Asphalting, will lay asphalt that contains 15 per cent recycled glass.

This glass will be provided by DASMA recycling at Tramway Road, Morwell, council’s recycling contractor.

“Using recycled glass within the asphalt reduces the amount of quarried material used.

Every quarry stone extracted and crushed takes energy and uses a finite resource,” Mayor Sharon Gibson said.

The trial will hopefully build confidence and capacity in the concept. The initial idea for the project was driven by GHD, DASMA and Fowlers Asphalting Pty Ltd. The asphalt will be laid in Traralgon, on the intersection of Franklin Street and Seymour Street, a site selected because it is showing signs of deterioration.

As a major intersection in Traralgon, it will provide an insight into how the mix performs under heavy traffic conditions, with both turning and straight through movements.

If it performs well and is economically sound, the product may be used on other roads in Latrobe City.

Council said it was pleased to receive $118,893 from the state government’s Sustainable Infrastructure Fund for the project.

Council will contribute the same amount.

The Sustainable Infrastructure Fund supports local governments and alpine resort management boards to use recycled materials in infrastructure projects.

Ideally applicants would hold appropriate qualifications, but handy people are also needed.

You will work as part of a team (who will quickly become friends) and remuneration is by way of the satisfaction of being part of history as they make memories for the many visitors to the railway.

Are you related to the McCoys?

DUGGAN, Ferris, Fraser, Fregon, Hedricks, Hollonds, Hunter, James, Madden, McCoy, Quigley, Rebbechi, Reid, Roth, Stove, Souter, Warner, Watson, Weston, Wilson, Zaetta.

These are just some of the surnames of families descended from James and Charlotte McCoy (McCoid) who arrived in Port Albert in 1858 from Scotland, via Tasmania where they lived for two years.

After James died in 1864, their older children all found their way to the Omeo area, followed

by Charlotte and her younger children when her marriage to Robert Hewitt did not last.

Their family of Sarah (Weston/Roth), Elizabeth (Fregon),Alexander, Charlotte (Souter or Soutter), James, William, Robert and Mary all lived in the Omeo region for at least part of their lives, some for all of it.

Their descendants are now scattered all over Australia with many living in Gippsland, including the areas of Omeo, Bruthen, Bairnsdale, Maffra, Heyfield, Sale, Pakenham, South Gippsland, LaTrobe Valley. James and Charlotte left Girvan, Ayrshire in Scotland with the surname McCoid, then sometime after arriving in Tasmania it became McCoy. In January 1982 about 200 descendants of James and Charlotte gathered at Bairnsdale Racecourse, and since then there have been several smaller reunions of different branches of the family.

Now almost 40 years later, it is time for the recent generations to meet together again or for the first time.

On Sunday,April 11 2021, a reunion will be held at The Bruthen Inn, Main Street, Bruthen from 10.30am.

Lunch and other refreshments can be purchased; photographs and the family tree will be on display, with prompts to share stories and memories.

This reunion was planned for April 2020 in Bairnsdale but was another casualty of the pandemic.

More than 150 registered to attend then; current registrations are lower with some interstate family less likely to attend, but still a good crowd is coming.

Ben Cruachan Walking Club

FROM Thursday, April 1 through until Monday, April 5, the club will be holding an Easter Car Camp on the Wellington River near Licola.

A variety of walks will be on offer.

Self-sufficiency for camping and meals is required.

On Saturday, April 3, the club’s walk begins at Billy Goat Bend in the Mitchell River National Park, follows the river and includes a short trek up Cobannah Creek.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

CANCER Council Victoria is encouraging Latrobe City residents to take part in this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to support Victorians affected by cancer.

By hosting or attending a morning tea event with family, friends or colleagues, people can help Cancer Council continue their life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs.

The official day to host a morning tea in 2021 is Thursday 27 May, however participants can register to host at any time throughout May or June.

In 2019 there were 7032 registered morning teas across Victoria, with 91 in Latrobe City.

However, due to the impacts of COVID-19, last year there were only 2759 registrations in Victoria, with 30 in Latrobe City.

Cancer Council Victoria’s head of fundraising Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said national fundraising income for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea had dropped by more than $9.6 million in 2020.

“This will have a direct impact on the funding available for our vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services, such as the 13 11 20 Information and Support Line, wig service and peer support programs,” she said.

On average 515 Latrobe City residents are diagnosed with cancer each year, while 36,000 people are diagnosed in Victoria.

Ms Fleming-Parsley said Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea gives people a chance to catch up with loved ones, while also supporting an important cause.

“We know that many people within our community are feeling isolated and alone at this time, especially after a challenging year. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea provides an opportunity to connect with loved ones in a safe way while raising funds for a good cause,” she said.

THE Latrobe Valley Sappers (a group of retired Army Engineers based in the Valley) are organising a reunion to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the last parade of 38 Field Squadron Royal Australian Engineers.

38 Fld Sqn, was raised in 1951 to handle the compulsory CMF component of the National Service Scheme set up in the aftermath of the Korean War. The Sqn. was disbanded in 1995.

The Sqn. was based firstly at Yallourn and then the Newborough Army Depots.

The reunion will be held on Saturday, April 24 at the Morwell RSL. As part of the reunion the attendees will march

on ANZAC Day with the Morwell RSL at their main parade.

The reunion is open to any Defence Force Personnel who were either based or trained at the Yallourn or Newborough Depots.

School bus accident victims always remembered

MARCH 22, 2020 marked the 60th anniversary of the tragic school bus accident in Traralgon where a school bus and train collided at the Liddiard Road crossing.

The bus was transporting children from St Michael’s Primary School, St Paul’s and Kildare Secondary Schools and Grey Street State School to the Traralgon High School to be transferred to their country route buses.

Six children and the driver were killed and many more were injured.

Five of the children had a combined funeral service presided over by Bishop Lyons at St Michael’s Church and were buried in a communal grave at Traralgon Cemetery.

The town came to standstill with the business area closed.

The children from the schools formed a guard of honour for the funeral procession.

The sixth child, Marie Windridge, was buried at another time at Heyfield.

Those buried in Traralgon are Margaret Hayes (12), John Leslie (11), Richard Flewin (11), John Warburton (10) and Jane Warburton (eight).

William Todd, the bus driver, had a service on the same day and is buried nearby.

The grave had been refurbished in 2002 by the Traralgon & District Historical Society and the community but over the years this needed renewing.

A small group formed in 2019 and with support from businesses and individuals working together, the grave was renewed.

In March 2020, a service was planned to rededicate the grave, but due to pandemic restrictions it needed to be cancelled.

On Sunday, March 21, the Sunday closest to the 61st anniversary of the accident, the Traralgon Cemetery Trust will hold the commemoration of this newly refurbished grave at Gippsland Memorial Park.

The headstone and grave will be blessed before a gathering in the Oak Room where some of the history will displayed and those present can share their stories.

So many of the community have very clear memories of where they were on that day and the effect this event had on them and their families.

Friends in Song Choir

FRIENDS in Song Choir is looking for mature people interested in joining their choir.

The choir practice every second Friday afternoon.

These practices take place at Morwell East Senior Citizens Centre in Vary Street, Morwell. The end result being that the group sing at Nursing Homes.

THE Moe Ambulance Auxiliary have unfortunately folded after 40 years.

The late Alan Treadwell was a member for many of those years.

The Rules and Regulations from Ambulance Victoria Head Office for selling raffle tickets, plus barbecue requirements (COVID) have forced their hand to disband.

Also member numbers were dwindling, with not enough interest to take on Office Bearer positions.

The Ambulance station members are still able to access funds from Ambulance contribution tins, at Moe Nextra, to purchase items of need for station and vehicles.

LOCAL Justice of the Peace have recommence their duties at Traralgon Police Station.

JPs have traditionally provided a document signing station as a community service, however this had to be stopped due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As well as a voluntary community service, the document signing station assists in reducing the workload of local police officers.

JPs will be available each Tuesday and Thursday at Traralgon Police Station from the hours of 11am to 2pm.

LATROBE VALLEY SOCCER LEAGUE LADDERS

IT was a sensational start to the 2021 Latrobe Valley Soccer League as league champions Newborough/Yallourn were surprisingly beaten by Morwell Pegasus 2-1 in the last minute of play and 2019 Grand Final winners Olympians were put to the sword 2-0 by Monash on a dreary Saturday evening.

Fortuna were held to a 2-2 draw with East Gippsland while Falcons had a good 3-0 win over Sale and Moe christened their new lights with a 2-0 win over Traralgon City.

FORTUNA V EAST GIPPSLAND

IN an important match where critics were looking at Fortuna to be the big improvers faced a determined and youthful East Gippsland on Sunday.

The Eagles had prepared well for the new season with impressive form in several pre-season trials.

Fortuna, who were blooding new players in goal scoring ace Jesse Kennedy and Hayden Tanti were unable to get their side off to a perfect start with East Gippsland opening the scoring through Brandon Ginty.

Not to be outdone, Fortuna replied on the rebound only a minute later when Damon Scott put one past Connor McAuliffe, the energetic Eagles keeper.

Soon after the Orangemen took the lead with Tanti showing poise to grab the lead for his side in the 27th minute.

The game continued in an attacking vein as East Gippsland’s Matthew Desio and tall Tom Forster gave Andrew Chapman the chance for East Gippsland to equalise on the half hour.

Both teams continued attacking but the keepers of the respective teams were pulling off good saves and at half-time it was a 2-2 stalemate.

Neither team scored in the second-half, but there were good chances by both teams.

Fortuna went forward three times without luck as they were thwarted by the Eagles keeper McAuliffe who pulled off some tremendous saves, stopping a one on one with Oliver Spiteri, diving on a Shane Cassar thunderbolt and then punching away a Tanti corner.

Fortuna were becoming frustrated going forward being called offside four times in succession after the defence of East Gippsland led by Ahmad Arian, Mikey Smith and the keeper played a high defensive line.

East Gippsland also had shots in the final few minutes, but John Beamer held his nerve to repel the Eagles.

Fortuna was disappointed not to have won but East Gippsland fought out the match in good style and deserved to share the points.

MOE V TRARALGON

WEARING their new strip and under their powerful lights Moe recorded their 50th win over Traralgon City on Saturday night.

Conditions were wet and slippery but that didn’t deter the Moe side who eventually ran over the Roosters 2-0.

Moe set up their first goal at 14 minutes with Matt Shearing going towards an advancing Traralgon City keeper and beating him in a one-on-one situation.

Moe doubled up 20 minutes later when an error by a Traralgon defender saw an own goal which put the Reds in a good position at 2-0.

Moe’s veteran keeper Peter Albanese was again energetic and pulled off some fantastic saves to frustrate the City side.

Ty Georgiou and Jake Heusmann were also instrumental for Moe as the Devils

IN the women’s competition Sale defeated Falcons 1-0, Newborough/ Yallourn United were big winners over Olympians/Tyers 8-0 with the combine’s Angela Knersch scoring five goals.

Fortuna hammered East Gippsland 17-0 with Emma Cook and Tenae Shankland scoring hat-tricks.

NEWBOROUGH/YALLOURN V PEGASUS

CHAMPIONS Newborough/Yallourn were up for a fight against Pegasus who proved to be a worthy opponent.

The Combine were able to open the scoring with only 10 minutes gone with Mark Fairbrother scoring the first goal of the new season, but they struggled as Pegasus fought hard to get back into the match and the Horsemen were rewarded when Kunda Abas was able to get on the end of some excellent build up play to drive home the equaliser five minutes before half-time.

The second-half was end to end work with few chances for both teams however at the death on 90 minutes Pegasus got the final chance of the game when Abas scored his second in a historic first-up win against Newborough/Yallourn, the Horsemen winning 2-1.

FALCONS V SALE

HEAD coach Mark Cassar started his Falcons 2000 coaching tenure on the right note as his side had a convincing win over Sale.

The 3-0 result was just rewards for Falcons but they had to work hard against a determined Sale outfit.

Conditions after heavy rain were muddy and slippery, but Falcons adapted better and finally after 26 minutes they got on the board with a goal to Jamie Pistrin.

Sale held out until the interval as conditions worsened.

After the break Falcons controlled the play and scored six minutes into the half to go to a 2-0 lead with a looping header from Pistrin to give him his brace.

Sale looked like getting a breakthrough, but Falcons were defending well, limiting the Swans to long range bombs.

Falcons ensured victory with their third at 74 minutes via a Ryan McCauley free kick to take the match 3-0 to go to the top of the ladder after the first round.

MONASH V OLYMPIANS

MONASH caused the biggest upset when they downed Traralgon Olympians 2-0 in a rain-affected match under the bright lights at Monash on Saturday night.

After end to end work Monash finally got the break through at 19 minutes after Kyle Jennings wrong footed an Olympians defender to volley the opening goal which Monash held until the main break.

Olympians came in for trouble three minutes into the second-half when two players were yellow carded, another incident at 74 minutes saw Olympians reduced to 10 players after a red card was given.

Monash with the extra players were in control and Jennings scored his brace with a long shot just squeezing past the keeper for a 2-0 advantage.

AFTER their good effort last week against Fortuna the East Gippsland Eagles make their second trip west this time to Monash. They have yet to beat or even draw with Monash so this could be a historic event if they play like they did against Fortuna. Monash are still buzzing after beating the Olympians last week and will need to keep playing that brand of football to keep winning and they’ll need to be wary of the Eagles who have the potential to cause an upset.

IN the 70’s and 80’s Fortuna and Pegasus would draw a bumper crowd as great rivals of the past. Fortuna will have a battle on their hands against an improved Pegasus team who pushed and beat the league champions. CRICKET TDCA

THE TDCA Under-15 season came to a heartstopping conclusion on Sunday as the best two teams fought it out in one of the most incredible junior matches seen in the history of the association.

The weather didn’t help the preparation of the Catterick Crescent wicket as rain fell late into the evening on Saturday night.

Arriving at the ground the wicket was a bit tacky and the square was very slippery, but the ground was in good condition and the sun was beating down so the umpires made the decision to wait an extra hour to give everything a chance to dry off.

Rovers batted first and got off to a good start with young gun Ashton Wright and Kane Scott putting on 29 for the first wicket before Scott was out for eight.

This brought the hard-hitting Tyler Reynolds to the crease, but good bowling kept him contained as he could only manage six.

With the score on 54, Wright was then given out caught behind which would then see wickets start to tumble until Mitch Leslie and Jacob Poel guided Rovers through the remaining overs to end up posting 77 at compulsory closure.

Ex Students bowled well to the conditions with all their bowlers having an impact.

Jake Zappula-Jaensch, Logan Fernance and Hunter Henry all finished with two wickets each, giving Students a great shot at victory.

Things didn’t start off as well for the Sharks, who lost their first wicket with the score on just two.

The pressure started to mount from then as Wright came on for a bowl who bowled beautifully in tandem with young gun Mitch Leslie who although didn’t take a wicket still bowled beautifully finishing with match figures of 0/3 from eight overs which included five maidens.

Students found themselves reeling at 6/30 until Zappula-Jaensch said enough was enough and threw caution to the wind, taking on the bowlers with great effect.

A quickfire 20 from him had the score up to 56 before he was out caught, but he managed to bring his team right back into the game.

Another good partnership between Rivah Conway (9) and Marshall Cropley (10) then got Students within reach of a brilliant win.

That was until Reynolds knocked over Conway and Benjamin Nicholls knocked over Max Noble.

A tense finish was now on the cards as only two more runs were needed for victory and as Lachlan Woolan bowled it to young Marshall Cropley, who had a big crack at glory.

Unluckily for Cropley, he hit it in Ashton Wright’s direction.

Wright made brilliant ground to take a grand final winning catch, leaving Ex Students all out for 76.

Wright was named man-of-the-match, scoring 26, claiming 4/21 and taking that match-winning catch at the end.

The game was played in great spirits in front of a very good crowd which was brilliant to see.

Imperials Cricket Club champion Wendell Symons was on hand to present the Brian Symons Shield awarded to Rovers for the premiership as

Brian was unable to present the trophy himself.

Imperials were superb hosts and really went to a massive amount of effort for the players on the day and the supporters attending what was a classic grand final.

TOONGABBIE recorded a convincing five-wicket win against Ex Students Hammerheads in the Under-12 grand final at Old Trafford.

The Hammerheads were sent into bat and endured a horror start which saw them slump to 5/7.

Tom Hood proved the chief destroyer, claiming three wickets, including the key wicket of opener Levi O’Neill for a duck.

Liam Bastin and Tyler Churchill steadied the ship for the Hammerheads.

Churchill scored an unbeaten 16, while Bastin was the only other batsman to reach double-figures, scoring 11.

Ex Students finished 7/67 from its allotted 20 overs.

Toongabbie’s chase also started sluggishly, slumping to 3/9.

But a rearguard action between Hood (six) and Cooper Mitchell took the sting out of the Hammerheads’ attack.

Mitchell signalled he is a player of real promise, hitting three boundaries in a run-a-ball 20 before retiring not out.

Blake Cooper followed on his good work, guiding the Rams to victory with six overs to spare by scoring an unbeaten 16.

Austin Gore was the pick of the Ex Students bowlers with 2/9.

Membrey a life member CRICKET

EX Students Cricket Club legend Greg Membrey was recently inducted as a life member of the club.

The man known as Boof has given outstanding service to the Sharks, with nine seasons as club president and two as treasurer.

A s a p l a y e r, Membrey was Ex Students first grade captain in 1991-92 and played in a first Accolade: Newly grade premiership in inducted Ex Students Cricket Club life 1996-97.

Further accolades member Greg include a second Membrey. grade premiership photograph supplied (1995-96) and a number of batting awards to go with three centuries.

Membrey was also a former long-time team manager of the Gippsland Under-21 team.

LONGTIME Traralgon trainer Alan Douch passed away overnight after a four-and-a-half year battle with cancer.

The 74-year-old trainer helped forge the riding careers of the likes of Peter Mertens, Frankie Stockdale and of Noel Callow, who were apprenticed to him, while preparing a number of smart horses himself over a lifetime of racing.

He trained the quality 1990s steeplechaser Big Zap with the 18-time winner Call Me Luck among his best flat horses.

Douch’s partner Linda said the trainer had continued to work right through his illness until the last week when his condition quickly deteriorated.

He was on track at Sale just two weeks ago when his galloper Ally’s Reward ran unplaced in a Benchmark 58 handicap.

“Allan was a legend around the Traralgon area. He was old-school, a jack-of-all-trades and a great horseman,” Callow said.

Molloy in Valley for coaching clinic

TDCA finals arrive with Ex Students the team to beat CRICKET TDCA

THE regular season is over and a huge finals campaign is upon the TDCA. Six out of seven TDCA clubs will feature in the finals series across all three grades and with said there should be plenty of interest across the entire league.

The first semi-final has Ex Students hosting Rovers at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve and the Sharks will be going into the game as raging favourite after their demolition of Rovers in the final round of the regular season last week.

Coming into finals is just so crucial and Ex Students are coming in with a wet sail, aiming to go back to back after taking out the premiership last season.

Jordan Gilmore has been massive this campaign, smashing runs for fun against every bowling attack and after bludgeoning 91 against Rovers last week the boys from DCP will be shuddering when he comes out to bat.

The Sharks bat incredibly deep and their bowling is the best in the league as they have three quality spinners in Warne, Stockdale and Pryde while also boasting the quickest of the quicks in Andy Matthews and Mitch Harris.

Rovers need to shake off last weekend’s capitulation and try something new against the Sharks if they are any chance to shake the Sharks tree.

The new ball will be crucial for Rovers so they need to be smart who they open up with.

Ewan Williams is bowling very well, but he isn’t a big wickettaker and Mitch Floyd copped a bit of stick from the Sharks batsmen last weekend

so maybe a left field choice is required to change Students’ plans.

The Rovers batsmen also need to come up with a plan to combat the star bowling attack and find a way to get through the pressure that Ex Students heap on to the opposition.

There’s no point batting time in this match, they must get at least 150 and maybe it’s a risk versus reward situation to let someone like Mitch Floyd or Jack Lynch open up and flay the bat around to try and score quickly against the new ball.

Prediction: Ex Students will win. They are seasoned campaigners and they have the mental edge over Rovers after last week’s bare bottom spanking.

The match-up: Kayleb Pearce finished not out against Ex Students last round and even daringly reverse swept superstar Lee Stockdale on his way to an unbeaten 14.

From all reports Stockdale wasn’t amused by the plucky young bowler’s brashness and no doubt will be looking to make amends this match.

THE second semi-final has Gormandale hosting Glengarry at Stoddart Oval which will be an almighty contest.

These two teams have one of, if not the fiercest rivalry in the TDCA and there will be no love lost during this massive final between the two clubs.

Gormandale are like a mule with a spinning wheel after finishing second this season ... they don’t know how they got it, but dang they know what to do with it.

The Tigers have had a blistering season on the back of their star bowling attack, in particular Shaun Barbour who has also been brilliant with the stick as well.

Coupled with his opening bowling partner Dylan Freitag and first change quick Adam Brady the Tigers pace attack is lethal.

Their batsmen though can be a little hot and cold although they are coming into this match in good touch and play the Stoddart Oval pitch very well.

Glengarry don’t play Stoddart Oval too well though, their last few scores at the ground have been 53, 80 and 70 so they need to dig deep this weekend and exercise the demons of games gone by.

It doesn’t help that they are coming off the bye and a loss to Toongabbie either so the big names like Nat Freitag, Al Jenkin and the Marks boys must do the majority of the work.

The Magpies bowlers have been very good this year, led by Cam Graham, who has been deadly with the new ball.

Graham has 27 wickets to his name for the season at an average of just over 10 so Gormandale’s opening batsmen must nullify the star quick to give their middle order a chance.

Prediction: Absolute no big comments will be made here, make up your own minds.

The match-up: Freitag versus Freitag will be an epic battle and no doubt one to watch. Nat Freitag is an aggressive top order bat and Dylan has been brilliant with the new ball all season so if the two meet in the middle don’t expect the brothers to take it easy on each other.

In the lower grades, Ex Students B Grade will take on Rovers at Duncan Cameron Park,Yarram & District B Grade play Glengarry at Roger Ries Oval, Rovers C Grade will fight it out against Ex Students at Jack Maskrey and Imperials go up against Yarram & District at Old Trafford Oval.

Cannons on target with fine win against Power FOOTBALL

GIPPSLAND Power’s winless start to the NAB Girls League season continued with a 41-point defeat to the Calder Cannons in Morwell on Sunday.

The Power again showed good patches of play, but maintaining that level proved elusive as the Cannons prevailed 7.13 (55) to 2.2 (14) at Ronald Reserve.

The first quarter was a competitive one and Gippsland were much better value than the 10-point deficit illustrated.

Molesworth booted their first goal of the game at the five minute mark of the second term.

But the Cannons responded with two unanswered goals and stretched the lead to 21 points at the main break.

The third quarter proved a tense tussle with both sides kicking a goal apiece.

Indiana Makai slotted Gippsland’s second major of the day, although the Power were four goals down going into the final quarter.

Calder added 2.5 in the last term to leave the Latrobe Valley with the four points.

Lily-Rose Williamson was named best for the Power for a typically industrious performance,

SEMI-FINAL day and what an eventful day it was.

Rain was forecast and teams were reminded to make every effort to complete the games on the day.

DIVISION 1 TOP sides Newborough and Traralgon revisited Morwell Bowls Club in a repeat of their epic finals matches of last year.

The game was a cracker. Traralgon got away to a good start leading by some twenty shots early in the game.

Newborough pegged them back going to a narrow lead at the halfway stage to set up a nailbiting finish. Newborough was unable to break away; each time they got ahead Traralgon won a big end to retake the lead.

When the rains came the game continued in a frantic manner with every shot counting as the visibility inside the dome at Morwell became reduced as the sky darkened outside.

Traralgon trailed narrowly 88-90 with two ends to play and just like basketball they took an eternity to bowl as both teams were frightened of giving their opponents an even break and wanted to have the last bowl in case a shot was needed for victory.

It was not to be and Traralgon drew two shots to tie the match 90-all.

A tie meant the team managers tossed for the right to roll the jack and teams had to start play from the end where they finished the 25-end match.

West Gippsland Bowls Division chairman Chris Ward played two of the best bowls of his career to have two bowls very close to the jack for Traralgon and his remaining team members Abe Roeder,Vince McIlwain and James Scullin drew four shots to draw level 27-27 with Paul Sherman and his rink of Tony Knipping, Barry Daley and Scott Jones and give Traralgon a hefty start in the sudden death playoff end.

Traralgon’s gun rink of recent weeks led by Michael Yacoub with team members Ron Sherlock, Pat Trewin and Phil Mustoe kept Traralgon in the hunt all day with a 23-16 victory over Nosha Michaels and his rink of Charlie Ward, Jo-Anne Michaels and George Lambos.

Kevin Lovett and his Newborough rink of Brian Carpenter, Rod Lewis and Neale Houston tied 25-all with Matt Ferrari and his rink of Derek Hewling, Ian Hilsley and Wil McIlwain.

Alan Grubb and his rink of Bob Goldie, Ryan Marston and Craig Thornton lost narrowly to Wayne Lynch and his team of Kevin Enguell, Shane Chapman and Ian Kirkup 22-23 leaving Traralgon the winner by eight shots with an extra end played following a 90-90 draw.

Traralgon 98 defeated Newborough 90.

Traralgon have a week off to prepare for the grand final while Newborough will play Traralgon RSL in the preliminary final at Traralgon on Saturday following Traralgon RSL’s defeat of Drouin at a wet Newborough on Saturday.

Players commenced the day with the green in excellent condition.

Both teams enjoyed the excellent running grass green prepared by Scott Jones to play some lovely bowls.

The threat of rain had been in the weather reports all week and it eventually arrived wetting the players who continued to play in quite heavy rain.

The green slowed down, but remained solid without the players slipping or bringing up divots.

Beau Williamson from Traralgon RSL and his rink of Ross McKenzie, Jeff Blytheman and Maurice Sutcliffe set Traralgon RSL up for a big win as they won 31-17 over Mark Atkinson and his rink of Corey Atkinson, Steve Barr and Dale Hendrick.

Maurice Gardiner and his rink of Chris Mackintosh, Eric Warfe and Brendon Smiles had a 29-23 win over Sheryl Atkinson and her rink of Denise Hamilton, Jan Aubrey and Les Firth.

Rick Lukey and his team of Peter Barnes, Max Aumann and Kevin Durward won 20-19 over Mark Leighton and his team of Maureen and John Leighton together with Mick Fleming.

Toby Wallace was the big winner for Drouin with his rink of Peter Wallace, Graeme Aubrey and Samantha Atkinson winning 28-14 over Ross Sizeland and his rink of Dale Wilson, Titch Hore and Terry Hunter leaving Drouin down by seven shots.

Despite the rain making the last few ends very difficult Traralgon RSL handled the changing conditions much better and both sides should be congratulated for finishing the match in trying conditions.

Traralgon RSL 94 defeated Drouin 87.

DIVISION 2 THE rains came early at Warragul with Moe leading by a few shots and the game stopped after a total of 68 ends played leaving 32 ends to be played.

Clubs were given the option of going to Traralgon and finishing the game at the indoor centre, but decided that was inconvenient.

The latest playing instructions from Bowls Victoria which were updated on January 28 instructed Regions and Divisions to ensure that every effort was made to complete finals matches on the day which was why the offer to continue play at Traralgon was made after sides were warned during the week to be prepared for a late finish.

The Bowls Victoria rules also state that if the match is not completed on the day that the match be finished at a later date prior to the next final.

The Competitions Committee have agreed that the match will resume at 9.30am at Warragul Bowling Club on Saturday with the scores from last Saturday standing and the remaining ends to be played with the players able to have a two end roll up prior to the start of play as it is a different day.

At the conclusion of the match the loser will travel to Drouin to compete in the preliminary final against Neerim District who defeated Traralgon (2) at Morwell on Saturday.

The winner can go home to rest and prepare for the grand final the following Saturday.

Trevor Kuhnell and his Neerim District rink of Ray Throup, Tony Thornton and Peter Brooks set the win up with a 32-16 win over Graham Cross and his rink of Ron Baker, Kathy Smiles and Garry Trewin. Peter Throup and his rink of Gerry Englestad, Karren Sheers and Pat Fraser-Aurisch had a 22-19 win over Barry Fernance and his rink of Rob Marsh, Col Eagle and Bill Bishop.

The Traralgon fightback was led by John Taylor and his team of Bill Kirby, Kirsty Van Den Hoff and Austin Gapper who won 34-22 over Neil Adams and his team of Robert Cook, Chris Hogan and Alex McGillivray.

Dave Currie and his team of Bill Munday, Stuart Hulse and Ian Bloomfield won 17-16 over Ross Pollard and his team of Col McKay, Jim Fallon and Ray Watts leaving Neerim District the winners by seven shots and the demise of Traralgon (2) means Longwarry’s time in Division One is up.

Neerim District 92 defeated Traralgon (2) 86.

DIVISION 3 TOP team Thorpdale travelled to the good greens of Newborough and had a good day against Traralgon (3) despite the heavy rain coming towards the end of the match.

For the winners Brendan Jennings and his rink of Alan McLure, Darron Fraser and Denis Gunn had a 32-17 win over Norbert Schoeter and his rink of Jim Wilson, Greg Swan and Roger Davey.

Ross Kennedy and his rink of Wendy Jennings, Ross Pethybridge and Shane Chambers defeated May Cross and her rink of Alan Keam, John Kong and David Karsky 24-20.

Bob Dykstra and his rink of Jedd Ladgrove, Elaine Swan and Max Cumming won 24-20 over Thorpdale’s Ben Powell and his rink of Ian Simpson, Ron Mackie and David Ferguson.

Traralgon (3) utilises its double chance having to play Warragul (2) at Newborough in the preliminary final following Warragul (3)’s defeat of Boolarra at Thorpdale.

Thorpdale was a surprising choice for a final in many people’s eyes, however, the green rolled well and the club looked after the spectators very well.

When the rains arrived the players got very wet but were able to complete the game with the green draining very well.

The quality of the green speaks volumes for the voluntary workforce in charge of maintaining a fine playing surface.

David Smith for Warragul (2) and his rink of Kerri Currie, David Gatewood and Paul Simmons lead the way with a 33-15 win over Graeme Colbert and his team of Angela Mazou, Michael Schelling and David Caldwell.

DIVISION 4 TOP team Newborough (3) faltered in the semifinal for the second year in a row losing to a strong Yarragon team looking to win and return to Division 3 after a number of years in the wilderness.

Richard Polmear and his rink of Pam Jones, David Swingler and Harry Langres gradually got on top of Jeff Edwards and his rink of Ian Houston, Carmel Goss and Vern Verhagen winning 38-11 on a good Traralgon green which played well early and slowed down as the rain started.

The rain made play uncomfortable however it was not as heavy as at other clubs and games proceeded without interruption.

Sam Mazza and his team of Lionel Deane, Ross McDermott and Kevin McLaren were too strong for Charlie Cadby and his rink of Dave Madden, Steve Cunningham and Joy Cadby winning 27-19 after Cadby clawed his way back to trail 18-20 with Newborough (3) leading at that stage.

Peter Policha continued his good form for Newborough (3) with his rink of Marcia Evans, Wayne Russell and Chris Cunningham winning 32-21 over Majan Pazek and his rink of Graham Roberts, Gary Green and Murray Grigg.

Policha was assisted by Michael Holroyd and his rink of Josh Kennedy, Maurice Ludlow and Heather Mooney winning 23-15 over Jarrod Grigg and his team of Trevor Griffin, Gordon Wright and Bevan Romans.

Yarragon 101 defeated Newborough (3) 85.

Morwell (3) took on Trafalgar (2) at Newborough and with only one rink up that of Trevor Curtis and his team of Arthur Wells, Julie Klein and Max Duncan won 33-15 over Mal Clymo and his team of Derek Jones, Lawrence Heenan and Gerry Rosenboom to give them an opportunity to proceed if they can beat Newborough (3) next week in the preliminary final.

For Trafalgar, Wayne Hurst and his rink of Sean Tatterson, Ed Davies and Heather Taylor won 27-17 over Jack Prendergast and his rink of Les Brown, Rita Reddiex and Nick Nikodemski.

John Leicester and his rink of Barbara Evans, Alex Brodie and Sue Robinson defeated Ian Wilson and his rink of Ray Whittaker, David O’Reilly and Graham Hutchison 25-23.

Beryl Noblett and Alan Campbell, Stan Morgan and Sue Karleusa defeated Jim Cuthbertson 21-20 in front of a good crowd of spectators from Morwell Club giving them plenty of encouragement.

Churchill with Sean Peter and his rink of Paul Dodds, Herb Kennedy and Chris Thomas won 29-14 over Neerim District (2)’s Russell Meehan.

Bill Brown and his team of Craig Flanigan, Gillian Turpin and Vern Hargreaves won 24-17 over Greg Bond.

The winning Neerim District (2) rink was Jim Schroeder and his team of Graeme Wingrove, Gerald Winter and George Rymer who defeated Shirley Turner 20-16.

Churchill tackles Newborough (4) this week in a bid to advance to the grand final.

Churchill 69 defeated Neerim District (2) 51.

DIVISION 6 CONDITIONS at Yallourn North were testing as they were at other greens once the weather turned nasty, however, the games were completed with Longwarry (2) showing their class as they defeated Newborough (5) with Gerard Mitchell defeating Betty Williams 34-14 and Simon Counsel defeating Joan Lee 25 - 20.

Longwarry (2) will prepare for the grand final and Newborough (5) will have the second chance against the combined Boolarra/Yinnar team.

Longwarry (2) 59 defeated Newborough (5) 34.

Boolarra/Yinnar defeated Churchill (2) with Peter Canavan winning 32-21 over Stephen Jones which was nearly matched by the opposition’s Colin Smith, who defeated Janet Napier 22-13 leaving the combine winners by two points.

Boolarra/Yinnar 45 defeated Churchill (2) 43.

Preliminary finals will be held on Saturday.

Divisions 1, 4, 5 and 6 will play at Traralgon.

Division 3 at Newborough and Division 2 will finish their match at Warragul before moving to Drouin in the afternoon for the preliminary final.

CRICKET LVDCL PREMIER A GRADE

MIRBOO North and Churchill are just one win away from being crowned season 2020-21 premier in the Latrobe Valley and District Cricket League Premier A Grade competition.

The Tigers and Cobras will meet this weekend at Morwell Recreation Reserve, in what is shaping as a great showcase to see out the season.

As getting to the grand final is often the hardest part, the challenge is now for either of these teams to win it.

The two had similar paths to the decider, both getting through in pulsating finishes to their respective semi-finals.

Mirboo North held on for dear life to walk away with a draw against Latrobe and advance as the higher ranked team, while a John Keighran epic saw Churchill chase 136 after teetering at 5/26.

With this in mind, it is unlikely either semi-final has taken more out of one team than the other, meaning Mirboo North and Churchill will go into the grand final evenly poised.

Having flown under the radar in the first half of the season, Mirboo North again found form at the business end - going into the finals series with four consecutive wins under their belt.

This trend seems to be a template for Mirboo

North cricket and football teams that generally sees them get through the first half of the season without revealing too much, and then rise to a new level when the whips start cracking - much like the AFL team that shares its colours.

Tigers skipper Jesse Giardina believed wins either side of Christmas over Traralgon West and Morwell Tigers Yinnar Raiders were pivotal in sparking the team’s run to the minor premiership.

“We started the season off pretty slow, I think it just took us six games to click as a side and once we’ve done that we haven’t been beaten since December,” he said.

“The one dayer against Traralgon West and then the next win against Yinnar was massive. I think those two games in a row really set the standard and gave us a bit of confidence going in towards the end of the season.”

Giardina was hopeful the character shown by his troops this season would again be on display in the grand final.

“The boys just fight ever week. I say to them before the game,‘if there is a challenge let’s take it on’ and whatever it is let’s just get there at the end. The tempo of the game rises in finals and everyone is chomping at the bit to just do whatever they can to stop a one or a two,” he said.

On combating Churchill, Giardina said the wickets of John Keighran and Brendan Mason would be the key.

“If we can get John and Maso out cheaply it goes a long way into setting up the game,” he said.

“Then again they’ve got guys like Steve Warr, Ryan Harvey and Ryan Wilk that can bat so there is still a tough job ahead.”

Mirboo North will be aiming to make it Tiger Time on two fronts this weekend, with the thirds also playing in the grand final.

“Two sides in the granny, hopefully we can bring two cups home,” Giardina said.

Over at Churchill, there could well be a feeling of normality after making another decider.

Grand finals have been like Christmas at Churchill in recent years, coming around every season since 2017/18.

Perhaps the most staggering element behind Churchill’s remarkable consistency is how easily it has been able to cover its losses or turnover of players.

Around half the team is still there from the 2018/19 premiership, yet other players have seamlessly step up to help fill the void, or established players have taken on more responsibility - much to their credit.

Churchill captain Brendan Mason said it was exciting to again be on the big stage.

“It’s a good opportunity to be back and hopefully we can get a game in and see what the result turns out to be,” he said.

“Early wickets will be key. Perera is key with ball

and bat (for Mirboo North) so if we get him early and don’t give them early wickets it will go a long way to winning it.”

The Cobras have been bolstered in recent weeks by fast bowler Dillon Leys coming into the side, who has complimented the left arm angle of Ryan Harvey, seam of Steve Warr and spin of Ross Whelpdale.

“Leysie has been a good inclusion coming on first change, he’s sending them down with good pace,” Mason said.

Mason himself has had a prolific season scoring 563 runs, including two big centuries, as has John Keighran, who is averaging 50.

Keighran’s unbeaten 105 in last week’s semi-final was rated by Mason as one of the best innings in his time at Churchill, alongside Ryan Ayres’ 153 not out in the 2017/18 semi-final win against Toongabbie.

Like Mirboo North, Churchill also has another team in the grand final, with its seconds playing for the title.

Now that the grand final is here, players from both teams will be wanting to put it all together one more time in season 2020/21.

With the ultimate prize on the line, imaginations will run wild in the next few days as players seek cricketing immortality.

Churchill Profiles

Jesse Giardina (captain): Aggressive batsman who plays with a lot of freedom. Was man of the match in the Tigers’ 2015/16 premiership.

Callum Polo: Left-hand opening bat and wicketkeeper. Strong through mid wicket and will look to set a solid foundation for those following.

Damien Turner: More than handy all-rounder who knows his role and performs it consistently. Has grinded out a few valuable 20s and taken 21 wickets for the season. Bleeds yellow and black.

Hudson Kerr: Top order batsman who will get himself set before playing any expansive shots. Returned to cricket this season after some time playing lawn bowls of all sports.

Jed Alexander: Very determined player who puts a high price on his wicket and bowls steady left arm orthodox. Always does what the team needs.

Madura Perera: Sri Lankan all-rounder who has played a lot of first class cricket. Bowls genuinely rapid pace and hits the ball cleanly from the get-go.

Will Cheatley: All-rounder with plenty of finals experience. One of four Mirboo North players to take 20 or more wickets this season.

Jacob Blair: Another player you would class in the more-than-handy category. Usually comes in at six or seven and bats in partnerships to make sure no runs are left out on the ground.

Shane Peters: Very busy left-hand batsman who is the master at pinching quick singles. A truly unique character, the man known as Choco provides a running commentary as he plays.

Josh Taylor: Fast-medium bowler who has a knack of getting the big wicket of the opposition. Has enjoyed multiple premiership success for Mirboo North in football and cricket and is the current Mirboo North senior football coach.

Dale Banks: Leg-spinner who gives the ball an almighty rip. Gets a prodigious amount of turn and has a mean wrong-un in his bag of tricks. Has cleaned up plenty of batting orders in his time.

Brendan Mason (captain): Right-hand top order batsman who can hit a long ball and is one of the best fielders in the competition. Looks unorthodox, but possesses unbelievable hand-eye coordination.

Matt Harvey: Left-hander who has enjoyed a full season of first grade cricket. Has batted in a variety of positions and took 5-18 against Mirboo North earlier in the season with his left arm orthodox.

Ricky Velardi: Opening batsman who has made 260 runs so far this season. Will play an important role for the teams fortunes.

John Keighran: Freakish player capable of single handily winning a match with bat or ball. Looms as the difference as he was in the semi-final. Couldn’t be far off Churchill knighthood.

Steve Warr: Doesn’t look like a cricketer, but his military mediums will be gold during the middle stages of the innings, as will his resolute batting for very long periods. Was man of the match in the Cobras’ most recent first grade premiership in 2018-19.

Ryan Harvey: Left-arm fast bowler who will run in all day and has the underrated ability to blast out the tail quickly. Can also play as a versatile batsman depending on the situation of the game. Aiming to become a premiership president.

Dillon Leys: Bustling fast bowler who can get them through at good pace and also provides intimidation factor. Played in a senior Gippsland Cricket League grand final.

Chris Williams: Opening bowler who has been used in short, sharp bursts to good effect this season.

Will want to make use of the new ball.

Ross Whelpdale: Very intelligent off-spinner who reads the game extremely well. Has also batted in the top order in recent weeks.

Ryan Wilk: Batsman who has mainly held a spot in the top order this season. Bizarrely started the season playing with Jeeralang-Boolarra and played against Churchill the week before joining them.

Travis Brighton: Versatile player who has appeared from nowhere in the last few weeks, playing two home-and-away games and a final.

CATS, Moe set to square-off CATS and Moe should be feeling fresh heading into the Latrobe Valley and District Cricket League A Grade grand final this weekend.

Both teams racked up 200-plus totals in their respective semi-finals, with CATS making a huge score of 372, while Moe routed Centrals for under 100.

The Lions’ win was remarkable in the sense that it was a complete reversal to what happened the week prior when it lost outright to the same opponent.

CATS also underwent a similar pathway, losing reverse outright in the last home and away round before blitzing its opposition in the semi.

Such a reference point could be used in the grand final at Yinnar, with players of both teams knowing absolutely anything is possible.

In preparing for the big one, CATS and Moe

offer similarities when it comes to grand final experience.

Most of the current CATS line-up was there for the teams most recent grand final appearance in 2018/19, while Moe has a number of survivors from the fabled ‘eight in a row’ era of the mid 2000s-early 2010s.

Pat and Sean Spiteri, Andrew Philip and Jayden Mathison all played in Moe premierships during that time, while Chris Robinson and Rob Mrzygloski bring finals experience from both Newborough and Trafalgar respectively.

The grand final could present contrasting game styles, with CATS having a lot of big hitters in the top order that like to take the game on, while Moe traditionally prefer to get the percentages in their favour with the ball by bowling one side of the wicket and wearing opponents down.

Star CATS all-rounder Callum Stewart is expected to crank it up for the grand final, and could generate speeds of up to 130 kilometres an hour across 20 something overs.

Stewart, Ben Julin, Jamie Cochrane, Josh Keyhoe and Tinashe Panyangara loom as match winners for the minor premier.

Moe can be expected to bat with patience, as has become a hallmark of theirs over many years. Even if it means batting 80 overs to put up a score of 160 to 180, one thing the Lions always seem to do is bat their overs and then back their bowlers in.

While the onus will be on Andrew Philip and Joel Mitchell to perform well, the team has a number of players who can chip in.

Choosing a winner proves difficult as either team could walk it in on their day, so the match is set for a close finish.

Generally grand finals carry with them a surprise element, and there is often one unassuming player who does virtually nothing all season that plays out of their skin in the decider.

Whoever that player is in this grand final will carry memories with them to the grave if their team is successful.

MOE PROFILES

Ben Julin (captain): All-rounder who bats in the top four and bowls quality left-arm orthodox. Has scored 379 runs and taken 17 wickets in 2020-21.

Jamie Cochrane: Has had a decent season an an opening bat, scoring close to 400 runs. Will want to set a positive tone.

Josh Keyhoe: Right-hand opening batsman who likes to play his shots and keep pressure on the bowlers.

Nathan Harrup: Young batsman who has been given an opportunity in a variety of positions this season. Has batted in the top four since Christmas.

Callum Stewart: Arguably the classiest player in both divisions. Genuine all rounder who can bowl lightning pace and play proper cricket shots all around the wicket.

Jack Blythman: Has been a more than serviceable medium pace bowler this season, claiming 17 wickets, often against the run of play.

Tinashe Panyangara: Zimbabwean Test pace bowler and ultra aggressive batsman. Bowls a heavy ball that brings catches behind the wicket into play. Got Hashim Amla out in a World Cup. Harry Cooper: Spinner who is not afraid to toss them up and has been rewarded with a few wickets this season. Another young up-and-comer of the CATS team.

Tyler Brown: Returned to cricket this season and has made handy contributions batting in the middle order. Put it all together with a magnificent 104 in the semi-final.

Sam Gissara: The youngster has taken wickets here and there this season and has no doubt learned a lot playing alongside the likes of Panyangara and Stewart.

Dylan Keyhoe: Wicketkeeper who keeps things in order behind the pegs and turns a lot of half-chances into wickets.

Pat Spiteri (captain): Veteran batsman who keeps on contributing valuable runs. Taking the Lions into a second consecutive grand final as captain-coach.

Chris Robinson: Right-hand opening batsman who can be hard to stop once he gets going. Drives well through the off side.

Sean Spiteri: Left-hand opening batsman with a very correct technique. The cover drive and pull shot remain his specialty.

Andrew Philip: Amazingly consistent batsman who has the uncanny ability to make it seem as though he is only on 30 when in fact he is on about 70.

Arguably the greatest batsman in Moe Cricket Club history.

Joel Mitchell: Left-hand top order batsman who strikes the ball as cleanly as anyone in Gippsland. Bowls very good right-arm off-breaks and cuts off many balls diving and sliding in the ring.

Nathan Lee: Right hand top order batsman who works on a simple see-ballhit-ball mentality. Can generate good pace with the ball as well.

Ben Maslen: Batsman capable of spending ample amounts of time at the crease. Has been involved in several key partnerships this season.

Noah Kane: Clinical gloveman who rarely lets an opportunity slip. Bats in the middle order to help take the innings further.

Robert Blunt: Pace bowler who has enjoyed a great season, taking 26 wickets. Someone you would love to see win a flag.

Harry Daly: Beanpole paceman who has taken multiple wickets in four of the last five innings he has bowled.

Jayden Mathison: Right arm fast-medium bowler who brings all modes of dismissal into play with his accuracy. His low trajectory action has caught many by surprise.

Rob Mrzygloski: Leg-spinner and hard-to-get-out batsman. Can hold up an end for hours at a time.
