ALINTA Energy is shifting its customer service call centre from the Philippines to Morwell in a move that will provide 230 new jobs to the Latrobe Valley.

Alinta Energy merchant energy executive director Ken Woolley made the announcement yesterday with Regional Development Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to coincide with the official opening of the Morwell Innovation Centre.

Alinta has signed a five-year tenancy agreement with Federation University to operate out of the newly-opened innovation centre.

The company is in the midst of recruiting locals to start operating the contact centre mid this year, making it one of the Valley’s largest employers.

Mr Woolley said Alinta decided to move its call centre to the Latrobe Valley as the energy giant had strong ties to the area with Loy Yang B. He said it would demonstrate the company’s

commitment to “deliver even better service to its customers”.

Mr Woolley said the new centre would provide multi-million-dollar investments each year to the Latrobe Valley economy.

“We’re investing in Australian jobs, and I think our customers will enjoy speaking to someone locally when they call us,” Mr Woolley said.

“We’re making this investment because it’s the right thing to do for our customers, and because we want to cement our local operations and help create jobs and investment in regional Victoria.”

The initiative is being supported by the state government through its investment attraction and Jobs Victoria programs.

Mr Woolley said the state government had helped identify the Latrobe Valley as a suitable location to establish the new call centre, with an appropriate population and skillset.

“The opportunity to engage with Federation University’s technical aspects for this new development is exciting for Alinta.”

The $17 million government-funded Morwell Innovation Centre is a part of the Gippsland High-Tech Precinct, and will also host educational programs and work with Gippsland Tech School and TAFE Gippsland.

It features a 100-seat conference room, commercial tenancies, and an innovation hub.

Ms Thomas said there would be further announcements for more tenants for the innovation centre.

LATROBE Magnesium plans to start constructing a $50 million magnesium plant in Hazelwood North by the end of March and is in the midst of appointing engineering and procurement staff.

LMG chief executive officer David Paterson said locals should expect to see security fencing and activity on site in late February as plans get underway to start building the Tramway Road plant. Work will include on site surveying, electrical upgrades, and stripping out the office.

The project has received nearly $8.8m in a research and development tax rebate that Mr

Paterson said is being used to cover initial capital costs and design work.

However, Mr Paterson stressed they were still waiting to sign off on a final $20m in financing in February, but was “confident” this funding would come through.

The company is building a trial plant that will operate for about 18 months to create magnesium out of Yallourn fly ash after signing a 10-year supply contract with EnergyAustralia.

The world-first project will produce 3000 tonneper-annum of magnesium providing 53 jobs, before up-scaling to a fully-commercialised operation

that will process 40,000 tonnes a year.

The project had gained both Environment Protection Authority and Latrobe City Council approvals, but Mr Patetrson said they would have to reapply for these permits if it up-scaled to a larger plant.

“We will run this as a research facility and once we have the proof this works, we will make the decision to go bigger, and look to expand as soon as possible,” Mr Paterson said.

“We are a great catalyst for other industries in the Valley as magnesium is where the car and defence industries are going.

“This is terrific news for Morwell and the Latrobe Valley generally, this will bring on-shore jobs right here to the Morwell Innovation Centre,” Ms Thomas said.

“The buzz this will create, with so many people employed at this place which is an incredible precinct.”

The move was backed by Latrobe City Council Mayor Sharon Gibson who described it as “another string in the bow” for the Valley, and would help reduce the region’s unemployment levels.

“We are delighted Alinta is bringing jobs on shore and will help bring a level of decent employment to the Latrobe Valley,” Cr Gibson said.

THE Latrobe Health Assembly said it is disappointed with the approval of the Hazelwood North lead acid battery plant by the state government.

The Latrobe Health Assembly has, over the past year, noted significant concerns from residents about the potential impacts of the Chunxing Hazelwood North plant.

Latrobe Health Assembly community chair Tanya Rong said the community is “clearly very concerned about the plant’s close proximity with school, residential and farming land”.

“Our disappointment is that the community doesn’t feel like they have been listened to in the decision process and they don’t understand it or why the process for the VCAT wasn’t considered,” she said.

OSMI Australia has submitted its applications for planning approval to build the proposed Delburn Wind Farm to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

The planning permit comprises up to 33 turbines with a maximum height of 250 metres.

OSMI director Peter Marriott said following extensive design review, the company have managed to significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the project.

“The area of native vegetation to be impacted by the project has been reduced from 42 hectares to approximately 14 hectares with up to 54 large trees to be impacted,” he said.

“It is anticipated that over half of these trees will be able to be retained despite needing to be offset.

“All trees that do not need to be physically removed will be left in place unless they become a safety risk.

“Modelled noise outputs demonstrate our design target of 35dB for wind farm noise levels at residential dwellings has been achieved at all but a handful of houses.

“For those limited number of dwellings, the noise levels are modelled to be in the 35-37dB range, well below the statutory limit of 40dB - or background plus 5dB.” The documents are now being reviewed for completeness by the planning division of DELWP and if found to be complete will be accepted for assessment.

Once DELWP advises that the application has been accepted for assessment, all the documents will be published on the OSMI website.

The application has required a large number of documents be prepared to assess the project and the planning permit application in total comprises more than 2000 pages of information.

OSMI will be preparing and publishing summaries of the information that is included in each report to assist the community in navigating the documentation.

“I have also heard that people think it will will impact on our pride in the Latrobe Valley ... we have worked hard at the assembly to build that pride and that really affects locals’ mental health and wellbeing,” she said.

The Latrobe Health Assembly’s submission to Latrobe City Council said the proposed plant would be located in an area relatively close to Morwell, being situated some three kilometres, and in some cases less, to housing, schools, childcare centres, businesses and retail centres.

Ms Rong said of particular concern to community members was the fact the Hazelwood North Primary School and its adjacent playgroup centre is about 1.7 kilometres from the plant’s stack.

The Latrobe Health Assembly’s submission also noted there are other schools in close proximity: Sacred Heart Primary School, FLO (Flexible Learning Option school), Maryvale Crescent Kindergarten, Commercial Road Kindergarten and Good Start Early Learning Centre, located south of Commercial Road.

Mr Paterson said the plant’s spray roaster vessel and hydromet equipment would be made in the Latrobe Valley, and the smelter would be made in Melbourne and assembled locally.

He said they would initially process Yallourn fly ash before looking to other feedstock supplies from either Hazelwood or Loy Yang.

Mr Paterson said they were also looking at using iron-nickel slag from the Pacific as an “insurance” to bolster supplies for the larger plant.

Delays in Lovison case HOMICIDE detectives have been delayed in building a case in a Victorian murder investigation because of resources being diverted to hotel quarantine and border controls.

Three people charged with the murder of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison faced the Magistrates Court last week, where prosecutors sought an extension to providing their legal teams with evidence.

Samantha Guillerme, 24, Jake Brown, 28 and Andrew Price, 47, are charged with murdering Mr Lovison.

He disappeared from Newborough on April 16 last year.

Mr Lovison’s body was found at Moondarra, about 28km north of Moe, on May 23.

Guillerme, Price and Brown all appeared by video link from prison during the hearing.

Guillerme waved and blew kisses to her family, while the accused all wished each other a Merry Christmas.

Prosecutor Tim McCulloch asked for a committal mention, scheduled for Thursday, to be pushed back another six weeks.

Police had been due to hand over their full brief of evidence against the trio on December 1.

Part of the information had been provided but other parts were being affected by the diversion of police resources to support hotel quarantine and border control operations relating to Victoria’s coronavirus response, he said.

Mr McCulloch said a significant volume of phone and listening device intercepts remained outstanding and could not yet be provided to the defence lawyers.

It would take another month or two to transcribe that evidence and investigators would then need time to check it for accuracy.

Forensic statements on drug and firearm analysis were also outstanding and while some of the various phones seized by officers had their contents downloaded, others had not, he said.

The court heard a new committal mention could not be held until March 4 at the earliest.

Fresh applications for bail are expected to be heard before then.

The trio’s case will return to court on February 8 for a status update.

Safety first

LATROBE Magnesium will carry out independent safety monitoring on its staff to test for any potential lead exposures from the neighbouring lead acid battery recycling plant.

Latrobe Magnesium chief executive officer David Paterson said he planned to approach Chunxing to independently monitor employees for lead at the Tramway Road site.

“This means there is a proper safety procedure in place.We will talk to Chunxing to see how we can officially do this,” Mr Paterson said.

“We will have to do this because of their location next door, it will be prudent to protect our staff. We will be monitoring our own employees as safety is our number one corporate mission.”

Mr Paterson was responding to the Victorian Planning Minister’s approval of the contentious battery recycling plant on Fourth Road, but said he was yet to see Chunxing’s operating plans.

He acknowledged the battery plant had gained Environment Protection Authority approval and had passed all detailed technical, environmental and human health studies.

“If Chunxing delivers on what they promise, then yes, I think it will be all right, but we don’t know until the plant becomes operational,” Mr Paterson said.

Mr Paterson said his own magnesium smelter would pose no risk to community health and all plant equipment would be built and designed to Australian standards.

He said dust would be contained inside the plant and they would install the “best” bag house facilities to capture any dust at the point of production.

Mr Paterson said fly ash would be collected in a wet form and transported in covered B-double trucks and then deposited in silos on site to minimise any further dust exposure.

“All the plant equipment will be made in Australia to Australian standards with the proper specs, this means we have an Australian company to go,” Mr Paterson said.

Renaming rivers?

GIPPSLAND communities are invited to have a say on two state goverment place naming projects to encourage the use of Aboriginal words and female names as a way of ‘‘decolonising the landscape” and erasing the patriarchial stain of early settlement.

One of two projects currently undreway could result in the scrapping of names of early explorers or British officials given to waterways - such as the Thomson and Macalister rivers - in favour of Indigenous names to make them more reflective of Australia’s history and more culturally acceptable.

The ‘Our Places Our Names - Waterways Naming Project’ is part of the Aboriginal Heritage Council’s push to encourage Indigenous communities to name unnamed waterways or rename waterways with traditional names as “an important step in realising self-determination for Victorian Traditional Owners”.

Some, such as Thomson - named after an

administrative officer in the NSW colony in the 1800s - are named after British people who spent very little time, if any, in Victoria.

This is not the first time the behaviour of early explorers has been part of the naming debate.

In 2018, the Australian Electoral Commission gave the official tick of approval for the federal seat of McMillan to be renamed following community outrage over the explorer’s documented involvement in mass Indigenous killings across Gippsland.

However, despite a push by the Aboriginal community for an Indigenous word to be selected, the seat was renamed Monash, after Sir John Monash, the architect of the State Electricity Commission.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said any name changes would involve consultation with local Aboriginal groups.

Under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998, the naming rules must be reviewed at least every five years.

Fire destroys unit

FIRE tore through a unit in Morwell on Tuesday.

At 10.30am crews from Morwell received calls about a fire on Commercial Road and were at the scene within minutes.

The fire, believed to have been caused by a cigarette, caused significant damage to the home, but did not spread to other units on the block.

Two FRV appliances from Morwell and a CFA tanker had the fire under control within 10 minutes.

Fire Rescue Victoria Commander Shane Mynard said it was a timely reminder for people to be vigilant with cigarettes inside.

“At this time we believe (the fire was started) by a discarded cigarette. It’s a good timely reminder for people not to smoke in bed and if you do, make sure that it is put out,” he said.

“We did get a lot of calls from Triple Zero about the fire, so lots of people have seen it rather early and that is a good to see that people have reported it straight away.”

Comm Mynard also said crews did a great job to keep the fire from spreading to other units in the complex.

“The wind definitely didn’t help, but the crews are trained for these kind of things and they did a great job to maintain the fire to the bedroom where it started,” he said.

“There might be a little bit of smoke damage in the other units but no fire damage, that is going to happen in units like these with a flat-top roof.”

Alleged syringe attack on two police officers POLICE BEAT with Tessa Randello TWO police officers were allegedly stabbed multiple times with a syringe while arresting a man in Moe earlier this month.

A 55-year-old Moe woman and 28-year-old Moe man allegedly stole vacuum cleaners from a store in Traralgon.

At 3.10pm on Sunday, January 10 the pair were located on Fowler Street in Moe and arrested for the alleged theft.

The woman was arrested without incident.

The man resisted arrest and allegedly stabbed both police officers multiple times with a syringe before being arrested.

The police officers received medical treatment after the alleged attack.

The man has been remanded in custody and will face court next week.

Traralgon man injured during alleged knife attack

A 23-year-old man from Traralgon was allegedly

attacked with a large knife after leaving his car at a residential property in Morwell.

The man was parked in the driveway of a home in Wicks Crescent, Morwell on Saturday, January 9 at 7.30pm.

When he got out of the car, two Morwell men allegedly attacked him with a large knife which caused a large wound.

The man was taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Suspicious fire at Morwell Scout Hall in December DETECTIVES from Latrobe Crime Investigation Unit are investigating a suspicious fire at the rear of the Morwell Scout Hall on Hourigan Road.

GIPPSLAND Community groups are being urged to apply for access to Federal Government grants to upgrade and improve their facilities and resources.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said $150,000 had been allocated to upgrade local community infrastructure through round six of the #lovegippsland Stronger Communities Program.

Mr Chester is calling for Expressions of Interest from local groups to nominate priority projects.

Expressions Of Interests opened on January 11 and must be received in Mr Chesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office by Monday, February 8, 2021.

Mr Chester said the program provided a funding stream for hall upgrades, kitchen equipment, change-room facilities and other smaller infrastructure projects that community groups often found hard to fund. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This funding opportunity comes at an important time for local community groups as they plan for future events and how they will support the community after a difficult few years,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are looking for projects that make a real difference to the community and provide the most

benefit to the community and volunteer groups.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chester said round six would allow groups to apply for grants between $2500 and $20,000 without matching funding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This particular round is designed to support volunteer and community groups which werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to fundraise or have the means to provide matching funding,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While this is fantastic financial support for groups, it is important to note that local governing bodies and organisations that fall under them will only be eligible to apply for up to 50 percent of the project costs and provide matching funding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I encourage local groups to visit my website www. darrenchester.com.au and lodge an EOI form by Monday, February 8, 2021.â&#x20AC;?

NATIONALS Member for Gippsland South, Danny Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien is encouraging local community organisations to put their hand up for a share in $350,000 of state funding, available for projects that preserve and share stories of local history.

The Local History Grants Program, which is managed by the Public Record Office Victoria, is currently accepting grant applications for up to $15,000.

Mr Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien said the grants were a great opportunity for local historical groups to inject some much-needed funding into their crucial projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Local history is invaluable to our community and our local organisations do a great job of collecting and sharing our stories,â&#x20AC;? Mr Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;$15,000 can go a long way towards preserving our history and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m strongly encouraging our local groups to get their applications in so our stories can be heard.â&#x20AC;?

Examples of projects funded in previous rounds include making local history accessible through online virtual tours, walking apps, e-books, online digitisation projects and oral histories.

The Public Records Office encourages community groups considering an upcoming history or anniversary project - from sports clubs to schools and historical societies - to apply for a grant of up to $15,000 as part of the Local History Grants Program.

Register your pool, spa ON DECEMBER 1, 2019, new state government laws to improve swimming pool and spa safety came into effect in Victoria.

It is now a legal requirement for owners of land where a swimming pool or spa is located to register their pool or spa with the relevant council.

Registration of pools or spas was due by November 1, 2020, Latrobe City Council will now proceed to audit each property, as legally required by the state government, using aerial photography, infrared imaging, building permit registers and information provided by the Victorian Building Authority.

For those who have failed to register, an infringement of two penalty units ($330.00) may be issued.

However, it is not too late to register your swimming pool or spa.

All you need to do is complete the online registration form available at: https://eservices.

latrobe.vic.gov.au/ePathway/Production/Web/ Default.aspx?js=1111882720, including the payment of $79 registration fee.

FORMER Socceroos and Gippsland Falcons coach Frank Arok has died at the age of 88.

Born in Yugoslavia,Arok played for FK Jedinstvo for a decade before moving to Australia in the late 1960s and making his name as one of the country’s greatest coaches.

Arok, a journalist by trade, coached FK Novi Sad and FK Vojvodina in his homeland and was appointed as coach of St George in 1969.

He enjoyed great success in two stints with the Saints, the first from 1969 to 1972 and second from 1981 to 1983.

Arok was appointed as Socceroos coach in 1983 and his contribution to the sport in this country was profound.

“Frank made a telling impact on Australian football, coaching the Socceroos in 89 internationals, and at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games,” Football Australia said.

“Frank also made a significant contribution to club football in Australia, coaching numerous sides and mentoring hundreds of successful players in the National Soccer League.”

Australia won 41 of the 89 matches played during the six years Arok was in charge.

Sadly, the Socceroos fell just short of qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, going down to Scotland, then coached by Alex Ferguson, in a two-leg playoff.

Australia drew 0-0 at Olympic Park in Melbourne after losing the first leg in Scotland 2-0.

Arok’s greatest success came when Australia reached the quarter-finals of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

He was replaced as Socceroos coach by assistant Eddie Thomson in 1989 after Australia bowed out of the World Cup qualifying race following a 1-1 draw with Israel.

Arok then returned to the National Soccer League with Marconi and South Melbourne, before he chartered a course for the Latrobe Valley as The Express reported on Thursday, June 13, 1996.

Former Socceroos boss Frank Arok has been appointed coach of the newly-named Gippsland Falcons, club president Fred Disipio announced last night.

Arok, who led the Australian team for seven years, brings a wealth of experienced to the fledging national league club and replaces long-time clubman Harry Bingham.

“He’s (Arok) arguably one of Australia’s most successful and respected coaches,” a delighted Disipio announced.

Arok was optimistic about his prospects in Morwell.

“I’m a confident guy and I think I can lift this side (Falcons) up the ladder and also promote the game in the region,” he told The Express at the time.

“Falcons are a progressive club and I can see a positive future here.”

Arok’s two seasons at the club saw the Falcons finish 12th and 11th, but he is best remembered for unearthing young talents such as Archie Thompson and John Hutchinson.

Bridge is back

TRARALGON Bridge Club members were very excited to be able to resume play at the bridge club recently.

The club had been closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic and related social contact restrictions.

Club president Anne Den Houting said that the committee had met regularly during the shut down to plan for the reopening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were thrilled to receive a community grant from Loy Yang B that helped us to purchase perspex table screens that promote social distancing and safety for our members,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The screens, along with other COVID-safe precautions such as the regular hand sanitising before and after sharing cards, individual pens and signing in protocols have allowed the club to resume play in line with recommendations from the Australian Bridge Federation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are the first Gippsland club to resume play and we are particularly grateful to Loy Yang B for helping us to make this happen,â&#x20AC;? Anne said.

COVID-19 did not deter all members from playing during the shut down.

Many members played in organised tournaments on line, while others played social bridge in private residences when visitor number restrictions were lifted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just shows how passionate we are about our game, and the importance of the friendships within the club. We were also able to support two new members with lessons on the internet during the shutdown and have welcomed them into our club play sessions.â&#x20AC;?

The club is currently holding sessions on Monday evenings and Thursday afternoons and the committee is hopeful that they will able to have additional sessions after the initial trial return period.

MOE View Club was delighted that they were able to pay for their Learning for Life students for 2020.

If upon the failure of that fairytale, I’m more than confident the Planning Minister will step up and call-in every permit, rubber-stamping them all, so we can have a building frenzy no matter the cost.

Twenty beds is an appropriate amount given that there have only been a small number of hospital detox beds available throughout Gippsland.Young people more often need to attend substance withdrawal units in Dandenong and Glen Iris and Fitzroy. They also had to attend rehabilitation facilities out of Gippsland as well. To know that our young people can return home after their substance withdrawal is a blessing; so to continue their longer term recovery plan. The rehabilitation practice framework promotes a staggered or steps approach so that there will always be young people who are going through these stages. The community responsiveness that is required could be the longer term foundation for the service to continue to further develop.

Your article states that the project meets the criteria for a Development Facilitation Program (DFP) established by the state government.

The purpose of the DFP is a) investment into the Victorian economy, b) keep people in jobs, and c) provide a substantial public benefit.

How does the China Belt and Road Memorandum of Understanding, signed by the Andrews’ government, comply with the ethics of the Health Innovation Zone?

The Health Innovation Zone includes a) Latrobe Health Advocate, b) Latrobe Health Assembly, c) Hazelwood Health Study.

The common factor in all three organisations is health, which appears to be overlooked by the Planning Minister.

The review of the Health Innovation Zone was completed, we understand, by Deloitte, in October 2020.

Gippsland Resource Group Inc has made numerous requests to the Department of Health and Human Services in Traralgon, for a copy of the Deloitte review.

THE Trafalgar and District Community Bank has provided funding to St Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School in Trafalgar for the construction of a new cubby house, Gaga Pit and teepees.

Trafalgar and District Financial Services Limited board member Matthew Steendam said the board believed this was a valuable project to fund to assist schools and children in what was a very challenging year.

Mr Steendam encouraged other schools within the Community Bankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s catchment to also apply for projects to similarly provide resources for their students.

St Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School principal Trish Mulqueen thanked the Community Bank and explained the children were already benefiting from the use of the new equipment, with the Gaga Pit being used for more than ball games including creating positive play within the yard and advancing numeracy skills.

Don calls time on service to Rotary

THE Rotary Club of Morwell has said farewell and thank you to Don Thomson, who is retiring after 51 years of service to the community.

Alongside his 51 years with Rotary, Mr Thomson served for more than 30 years as a member of the Latrobe Valley Ambulance Committee.

He was their Treasurer for some time.

Mr Thomson worked in many roles during his time in the Morwell Rotary Club, including Treasurer and Director of Vocational Service.

In his 34th year of membership with Rotary, almost 20 years ago, Mr Thomson was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow citation to recognise his outstanding service.

Of the many programs and committees Mr Thomson involved himself in, a few stand out in the memories of current members.

Rotarian Dave Swainsbury recollects fondly that Mr Thomson would take on the role of chief photographer with the club whenever he could.

Mr Thomson was an avid lover of photography.

It was his vocation, and for some time he owned a camera store in Warragul.

More recently, Mr Thomson will be remembered for his ‘meeter and greeter’ role at the Morwell Rotary Club.

This role was handed down to him upon the retirement of another member, Norm Howell, and he continued in the role until his own retirement this year.

Giving a speech in honour of Mr Thomson, fellow member Gloria Auchterlonie jested that if only Mr Thomson had served for a few more years as ‘meeter and greeter’ to last as long as Mr Howell’s service, they could remember him as the best ‘meeter and greeter’ they’d had.

The Morwell Rotary Club recently held an informal farewell and thank you dinner at the Glen Pub for Don and his wife Shirley.

Members shared memories and anecdotes in honour of his outstanding contribution across more than five decades.

The Understanding Victoria’s Biosecurity System Survey, from Agriculture Victoria, seeks to understand attitudes and knowledge of Victoria’s biosecurity system to improve how we prepare for and meet future biosecurity challenges.

Biosecurity Services executive director Katherine Clift said farmers, businesses, industry groups and community members were invited to contribute.

“The agriculture sector contributes over $14 billion to the Victorian economy, supporting essential food supply both here in Australia and overseas, and providing thousands of jobs,” Dr Clift said.

In 2020, six farms tested positive for three different strains of avian influenza in Victoria. This was the largest avian influenza outbreak recorded in Australia and the most significant biosecurity event in Victoria for the last 20 years, highlighting the importance of a strong biosecurity system.

“Timely, effective response is critical to rapid eradication of the disease, minimising the impacts on the poultry industry and maintaining the trust and confidence of consumers and trading partners.”

Over the past 20 years,Australia has responded to biosecurity incursions, including Varroa mite, citrus canker and equine influenza as well as prepared for threats such as foot and mouth disease and African swine fever, all of which can have a significant economic impact.

“Managing biosecurity risks is increasingly challenging, as international and interstate migration,

climate change, tourism and increased movement of goods all contribute to the risk of new incursions.”

Dr Clift said government, industry and the community needed to work together to prepare for, and respond to, current and future biosecurity risks.

“Everyone has a part to play in protecting Victoria from the impacts of pests and diseases,” she said.

“You can contribute to biosecurity by seeking advice when you see something unusual and reporting it, implementing good biosecurity measures in your business or on your property, working with your community to manage pests such as gorse, Queensland fruit fly or rabbits and practicing good hygiene while travelling.

“These simple steps can help protect yourself and those around you, and keep our beautiful bush and bountiful farmland free from pests and diseases.

“Taking part in the survey lets you have your say on issues ranging from potential biosecurity threats and impacts, to where you like to get your information from and what could be improved.”

The results from the survey will be published online and will inform the development of future biosecurity initiatives.

The online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, and is open for submission until Thursday, February 11.

Chunxing Corporation Pty Ltd will soon commence to build a state-of-the-art Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling facility in Hazelwood North, Victoria. This facility will process 50,000 tonnes of ULAB into 27,000 tonnes of refined lead and other by-product streams.

As part of our ongoing commitment to employing locally, we are looking for a suitably qualified and reliable Senior Project Coordinator / Engineer responsible for the overall planning and development of the recycling facility. This role will include liaising with local authorities and stakeholders, while planning the design and pre-approval requirements of the project prior to construction. The person in this unique leadership role will then oversee the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operational progress in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The role will require the incumbent to liaise with our technical supplier overseas, along with local design engineers during the pre-approval process including planning, directing, coordinating and budgeting, typically via subordinate supervisory personnel in activities concerned with construction and maintenance of structures, facilities and systems.

You will also participate in the conceptual development of facility design and construction, overseeing its scheduling and implementation.

The ideal candidate will be locally based in Gippsland with the necessary qualifications and experience. You will be reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of the company, starting immediately.

An attractive salary will be negotiated for the most suitable candidate.

You will be employed in this position for the initial pre-approval, design, construction and commissioning stages of the project. Your position will then be reviewed after which a permanent, ongoing position is available.

I will sorely miss the camping and fishing together, the sitting on the verandah having a beer with you and just talking about the world. TRAFALGAR Tennis Club’s junior program has gained support from the Trafalgar and District Community Bank.

The program was aimed at primary school aged children interested in having fun and learning the rules of tennis, encouraging children to return to play competition tennis with the club.

Through Community Bank sponsorship of $1700, the Trafalgar Tennis Club has increased access to experienced junior tennis coaches for young and upcoming players.

The junior tennis program commenced in November last year and ran for six weeks at the local courts in Trafalgar with the aim to teach children the basic concepts of the game.

Trafalgar and District Financial Services Limited deputy chair Debbie Di Sisto said investing in local youth through these programs is extremely important, as children are the future of our community.

Trafalgar and District Community Bank branch manager Phil Drummond said it was great to see the number of children on the court and that opportunities like this program are only made possible through the support of our customers.

Trafalgar Tennis Club president Luke Bryant said

the community welcomed the junior program, with all available spots being filled quickly.

“Our Tennis Club is currently in the process of increasing junior numbers and we hope that by providing opportunities like this at a discounted rate, we will be able to do so,” Mr Bryant said.

Community Bank representatives attended the program and were thrilled to see how happy the children were to be playing tennis with their friends.

Programs like this demonstrate the commitment of Community Banks to their local areas and the impact customers can have locally through their everyday banking.

CANBERRA golfer Matt Millar has returned in a bid to defend his Latrobe City WIN TV Pro-Am men’s title at Traralgon Golf Club.

The popular two-day tournament gets underway today with a high-calibre field of male professionals chasing $25,000 in prizemoney.

Millar overcame stifling conditions to shoot 12-under par and win the title by two shots.

The Territorian, who is fresh off a win in the Blitz Golf event in Adelaide last week, will tee off in a group from the 11th hole at 8.52am today.

He faces some serious competition, including the likes of Terry Pilkadaris, Scott Laycock,Adam Burdett and Marcus Fraser.

Pilkadaris is a three-time winner on the Asian Tour and boasts extensive European Tour experience.

Laycock formerly played on the USPGA Tour and is a former winner of this event, while Burdett took out the Pro-Am in 2019.

Fraser, a three-time winner on the European Tour, rarely fails to figure when he tackles the Latrobe Valley’s golf courses.

Pro-Am Committee chairman Andy Milbourne considered this to be one of the strongest fields to line-up at Traralgon.

“Besides past winners, such as world class players David Bransdon and Peter Wilson, there is a host of players attracting strong interest,” Milbourne said.

Eight female professionals will tee it up in the next two days, chasing $5000 in prizemoney.

There will be a new winner of that event with defending champions Montana Strauss and Melissa-Jayne Orr not lining up this year.

The event has been combined with the Traralgon Classic, meaning the best of the state’s amateurs will compete with the professionals in a stroke event.

Milbourne said the Traralgon layout is in pristine condition, but rough patches and dusty lies are the penalty for those golfers straying from the straight and narrow.

Spectators are welcome to come down and sample some high-class golf during the next two days.

The first professionals hit the course from 6.52am.

SATURDAY Pennant bowlers in West Gippsland are looking forward to getting back on the green following the Christmas break with a number of make or break matches for teams pressing to make the finals or avoid the dreaded relegation.

In Division 1 action, fierce local rivals Traralgon and Traralgon RSL meet at Traralgon with the home team in the unfamiliar position of being outside the four and rivals Traralgon RSL sitting in third place.

The outside greens at Traralgon are running well at the moment however in their chase for points would they consider playing the match on their indoor rink which many claim gives them a home ground advantage.

My selection Traralgon to record a home win.

Top team Newborough hosts Warragul currently sitting in fourth place after a great start to the season following their elevation from Division 2.

Newborough should have enough strength and experience to maintain their unbeaten record on their home green.

Morwell Club in desperate need of a win hosts giant killers Longwarry who gained all twenty points against Traralgon prior to Christmas to surge past Morwell Club on the ladder.

If Traralgon wins then the top four teams have a big lead over the other four teams, if they lose then the battle for fourth place will become more intense over the next few weeks.

The Men’s and Ladies Champion of Champions events will be held at Traralgon Bowls Club on Sunday with a high standard of bowls to be expected on the excellent free running Traralgon greens.

Spectators are encouraged to come along and cheer for your favourite bowlers.

FOLLOWING an exhausting Saturday preliminary rounds players fronted up for the final day of the West Gippsland Bowls Division Novice Singles at Traralgon on Sunday.

In the ladies final, Aga Kozlowska (Yinnar) defeated Lisa Arnold (Morwell Club) 21-19 in an exciting match witnessed by a good crowd of spectators supporting the up and coming players.

Kozlowska started well winning the first three ends to lead 3-0 before Arnold gained four shots on the next end and continued this form to win four more ends to lead 12-3.

Kozlowska won two ends to trail 8-12 before Arnold won another three ends including a four to increase her lead to 18-8 with only three shots required for victory.

Not to be denied, Kozlowska won six ends in a row to tie the score at 18-18 before Arnold won an end to lead 19-18 only for Kozlowska to win the next two ends and win 21-19 to conclude a match with some excellent draw bowling from Arnold and some persistent play from Kozlowska who battled to stay in the match at times.

There were six men left at the start of the day.

In the round of eight, Jim Wilson (Traralgon) held an 8-1 lead against Wayne Arnold (Morwell Club) after seven ends and was playing confidently.

But Arnold fought back and powered to a 21-15 win against a fading Wilson.

In the other early match, Cory Atkinson (Drouin) displayed some class draw bowling to defeat Alan Campbell (Morwell Club) 21-5.

In the semi-finals, Atkinson played Matt Ogilvie (Traralgon) and quickly went to a 12-0 lead as Ogilivie found it hard to match the precision drawing of the Drouin youngster.

Ogilvie managed to gain three shots and some confidence, but still struggled to match it as Atkinson went to a 18-5 lead.

Ogilvie won three ends before Atkinson finished the game off to win 21-11.

Arnold continued his good form in the other semi-final with a 21-6 win over Stephen Jones (Churchill), who found the more experienced Morwell Club player a handful.

In the final,Arnold began with three shots before Atkinson levelled at 3-3 in what was to become a familiar situation as they were level at 4-4, 6-6, 14-14 and 16-16 indicating a very competitive bowling with some excellent draw bowling on a good Traralgon green.

Atkinson gained three shots and lead 19-6, only two shots needed for victory.

However,Arnold rallied and won the next four ends to win 21-19 despite having to draw shot late in the game when Atkinson trailed the jack and held game only for Arnold to draw a well weighted shot close to the jack to remain in the game.

The crowd were appreciative of the exciting match played by these two up and coming players.

It was a good sign for bowls with eighteen entries in the men’s and six in the ladies.

Two times the success for Gippsland Goannas GIPPSLAND Goannas had Over-60s and Over-50s teams in action last weekend.

Taylor batted well and was out for a well-made 25.

Metlikovec followed soon after for 22, and the score was 4/112. Moore, 19 not out, and Meredith, 14 not out, took the Goannas past the Geelong score in the 29th over.

ON a fine morning in Traralgon, Geelong Over-60 Captain won the toss and decided to bat first.

Ian Southall and Peter Anton opened the bowling for the Goannas, and showed that the wicket at the Duncan Cameron Oval was ‘doing a bit’!

Neil Meredith and Reno Metlikovec were the change bowlers, took a wicket each and only 17 runs came from the next nine overs.

The two Rays, Smith and Floyd, entered the attack and bowled the next 12 overs, taking 2/52 between them.

Murray Moore joined Anton for the final seven overs, each taking a wicket as the score reached 7/137.

The Goannas started quickly, with Ken Bailey scoring 30 before being caught in the sixth over, when the score was 1/35.

Col Carmody joined Smith, who retired for 19 from 32 balls, before Carmody was out in the 12th over for seven, leaving the score 2/63. Debutant Rob

GOANNAS Captain Geoff Wells won the toss and decided to bat first in the Over-50 game at Bundalaguah, against the Upwey/Tecoma Over 50 team.

This season the 50’s are playing 40 over games (36 last season).

The conditions were excellent on the Col Wrigglesworth ground as Wells and Geoff Kinnish opened the innings, with Wells out early and Graham Ingle batting at number 3.

These two both made 11, but were followed by Brad McDonald and Graeme Rankin, who both retired after reaching 40.

Glen Moon, 23, Rod Jones, 27 and Jamie Freeman 16 not out, helped take the total to 7/200.

In reply the Upwey/Tecoma veterans were eventually all out for 174, in the 39th over.

Jones (2/24), Moon (1/32), Ian Freshwater (1/40) and Nick Anderson, starring with 4/23 from his five overs, were the wickettaking bowlers.

Semi-finals time in GCL CRICKET GCL

WITH the finals race heating up, the next four rounds of two-day cricket will be some of the most competitive ever seen in the TDCA. The match of the round has Imperials hosting Yarram & District at Catterick Crescent which had a successful grand unveiling last weekend.

Any worries about the wicket were soon discarded as 20 wickets fell for a total of 379 runs so it looks as if the deck has enough in it for both batsmen and bowlers.

Imperials are currently sitting bottom of the ladder, but amazingly are only 10 points away from fourth spot on the ladder so finals aren’t out of the picture yet.

A win against Yarram will see them jump up the ladder if all other matches are to go the way they are expected to go.

To do this Imperials must make the most of the new ball and allow the likes of Brad Sizeland and Nat Campbell to run through the middle/lower order of the Pelicans.

The new ball will be crucial this round for Imps as they currently have the highest opening partnership average of 32 going against them this season so Randall, Hughes and Bulmer must make in-roads against Yarram’s potent top order.

Another reason the new ball is crucial is that the Catterick Crescent outfield is still quite rough and course which means the ball gets chewed up a lot and will lose its shine quickly, making it harder to bowl with.

Yarram look like they are close to full strength and have contributors all playing good cricket across the board.

The fact that Yarram find themselves in the top four while still trying to find their identity as a new Club is amazing but they won’t be settling just on that and no doubt will want to continue on their winning way.

hold no fears at all coming to Catterick Crescent and now their bowling line-up is improving each week the Pelicans will be more than confident of claiming a win here.

Prediction: The short boundaries and good wicket will suit Yarram & District perfectly so Imperials must not let the hard hitting Pelicans get away from them. Chapman looks like he’s regained some form and Nat Campbell was at his hard hitting best last weekend as well but the Pelicans depth is pretty good and they certainly go into this match as the favourite.

The match-up: Damien Quigley didn’t get a bat last weekend so no doubt he’ll be aiming to add someone else to the Quigley Club this weekend on the smaller Catterick Crescent oval. Who will it be? Only time will tell.

TOONGABBIE will welcome Ex Students to Roger Ries Oval this round and will be hoping for favourable conditions to suit their quicks.

Keenan Hughes didn’t play last round and was a notable absence as Yarram were able to score freely which will be a concern for Rob Wheildon coming into this match.

There is no doubt Toongabbie prefer to play the longer format so will be more suited to the red ball and white clothes even if they do have to take on the all-conquering Ex Students team.

It was good to see Rob Wheildon batting at three last week as well as Tom Shippen getting a good 43 not out and even Zak Russell got a start, so things may be turning around for the Rams batsmen who have been struggling this season.

Ex Students are coming off the bye, but they will no doubt be ready and wanting to fire to potentially reclaim their top spot on the ladder after slipping to third last round due to the bye.

It’s all about Jordan Gilmore this season as the enigma is batting supremely well at the moment, not only is he making big scores, he’s doing it in quick time and making every bowling attack look second rate.

The star-studded Sharks will enjoy Roger Ries Oval as it suits their hard running between wickets but also their bowling attack so there is no hiding for the Rams.

Prediction: Toongabbie will need a Keenan Hughes

type spell from the Grand Final two seasons ago to have any sort of shot at winning this match. Hughes can do it, as can Matt Whitechurch and Ishan Ratnayake but with the Sharks batting depth it’s going to be hard to maintain that finals pressure in a regular season fixture so expect Ex Students to take charge on day one and carry it through to day two.

The match-up: It would be great to see Zak Russell get a good score and put behind him the horror of his Grand Final innings where Rob Voss dismissed him for a duck.

Russell is a young gun cricketer who hasn’t been able to recapture last seasons form so hopefully he can take it to the Sharks this round.

GLENGARRY host Rovers in the final match of the round and as they currently sit top of the ladder its hard to see them giving up the win this round.

The Magpies top order is on fire and continue to go from strength to strength which is a worrying sign for the rest of the competition.

Sam Marks, Al Jenkin and Nat Freitag are all stars in their own right but as a collective are proving very tough for every opposition bowling attack and if Rovers openers don’t get it right these three will continue on their merry way.

Don’t forget Glengarry’s bowlers are also in great tough as Cam Graham sits second in the league wickets and will enjoy being back at home on a deck he knows so well.

Rovers have struggled for a few rounds now and look to be down on confidence.

Liam Little had a good game in the B’s last week and should come back in, but they need to find something from a few other players and maybe throw the batting order and even the ball around a bit to give the likes of Tyron Bramwell and Tyler Pearce more opportunity to have an impact in the match.

Prediction: Glengarry won’t want to give up top spot on the ladder so will be focused and ready this round to get a big win. Rovers need to show plenty of fight and try to free themselves up a bit which is when they play at their best.

The match-up: Mitchell Floyd bowls rockets when he gets it right and he should like the Fred King Oval wicket as it traditionally has enough life in it to keep the quicks interested. If Floyd fires up and can get stuck into the Magpies top order expect an exciting little period of play.

Milestones offer Trafalgar inspiration CRICKET LVDCL

TRAFALGAR pair Rhys Holdsworth and Daniel Heathcote will be looking to mark milestone games with a win when the Ships face Churchill on Saturday.

Skipper Holdsworth is in the midst of his 150th A Grade appearance and Heathcote game 100, with Trafalgar to resume at 0/2, needing another 259 runs for victory on day two at George Cain Oval.

The template for batting was set by Cobras captain Brendan Mason, who scored a brilliant 147 on day one out of his side’s score of 260, but you suspect the Ships will need a wider contribution if they are to land the points.

The inclusion of James Blaser, who has scored nine A Grade centuries, definitely bolsters the Trafalgar batting line-up, while openers Liam White and Brodie Burgess have a big job to see off the new ball against an attack led by Ryan Harvey, Matt Harvey and the impressive Steve Warr.

It will be interesting to see what Latrobe’s approach is against Raiders at Yinnar.

The Sharks need just two runs for first innings points, with nine wickets in hand.

Anthony Bloomfield and Ronnie Chokununga were the not out batsmen at the end of day one.

Whether Latrobe aims for batting practice or sends Raiders back in to try and force an outright is a talking point.

Speaking of an outright, expect CATS to chase one against Centrals at John Black Oval.

The hosts will resume at 5/154 with a 26-run lead and the dynamic Tinashe Panyangara at the crease.

Panyangara is averaging 48.67 this season and with a free rein to attack could inflict some severe punishment on the Lions bowlers.

Tye Hourigan produced a fine spell late on day one to give Centrals some hope of getting back into the contest and along with Marc Fenech, may prove a thorn in CATS’ hopes of scoring quick runs ahead of a declaration.

Mirboo North’s hopes of climbing off the bottom of the Premier A Grade ladder depend on whether the Tigers can get the job done at home against Morwell.

Mirboo North will resume at 0/33, needing another 130 for victory.

Salman Rasool continues to impress every time he gets the ball in his hands, while Luke Sumner may well pose a threat with the chance for a longer spell.

BRAGGING rights will intensify in Sunday’s Gippsland Cricket League semi-final between Traralgon and Latrobe Valley at Stoddart Oval, Traralgon.

Having only faced each other in home and away matches so far in their short GCL rivalry, the chance to make a final is sure to bring out the best and worst in players – and possibly even officials.

The timing of this clash could not be better from a spectators point of view, as the TDCA only recently declined an invitation from the LVDCL to formally discuss combining the two leagues.

Traralgon will go into the match undefeated, and some genuine superstars of Gippsland cricket will front up for the Tornadoes.

Captain Lee Stockdale has scored the most runs in the competition, while Ewan Williams and Michael Warne sit first and third on the leading wicket takers list.

Nat Freitag will be compulsive viewing for Traralgon when he walks to the crease, and could single handedly send the Tornadoes into the decider.

Latrobe Valley head into the semi with a win under their belt, and will take positives having scored close to 250 in its previous game.

The tricolour team has shown a willingness to select players that might not necessarily be in the best 11 players available but be in the best 11 players that want to play, and onlookers will be watching with interest to see what selectors go for.

Morwell Tigers Yinnar Raiders pair Liam Maynard and Brad Knowles are experienced campaigners and will be called on to provide strong outputs.

Boy genius Ihraam Zafar scored 56 batting at seven last game, and will want to use his 228 IQ to outsmart his opponents.

Wilddogs eye decider

WARRAGUL is just one win away from reaching a destination it hasn’t reached in a quarter of a century – a Gippsland Cricket League senior final.

The Wilddogs last made a GCL decider in 1995-96 and as such, will carry the tag of sentimental favourites into its semi final clash with Bairnsdale at Western Park on Sunday.

Warragul has compiled a strong season so far, taking out the minor premiership the hard way by successfully chasing in every game.

Opening batsman Jack Armour has been a cornerstone to these chases, batting virtually through the innings on each occasion.

Although the Wilddogs haven’t scored at a rate-of-knots, Armour said the methodology behind their approach was based on maximising the likelihood of winning, and that the team was capable of picking things up if needed.

“We have timed our chases to minimise risk,” he said.

“We’ve got a serious amount of firepower that hasn’t had to be utilised in the last two games, and I certainly think either batting first or chasing a higher score we could accelerate as required.”

Warragul’s rise in GCL ranks has been one of the feel-good stories of recent years, and those behind the scenes will want to add another chapter to the story in the semi.

Wooden-spoon battle

THERE will be pressure of a different sort in the match between Sale-Maffra and Leongatha.

The Sharks and Leongatha will play off in a consolation final to determine who gets the inglorious distinction of finishing fifth.

Under-18s

IN the under 18 semi finals, Sale-Maffra and Latrobe Valley will meet at Traralgon West, while Bairnsdale will host Warragul at Lucknow.

Women’s

THE women’s fixture still has two rounds to go before the final, meaning the season is alive for a number of teams.

Sale-Maffra will look to continue its unbeaten 2020-21 when it plays Latrobe at Bundalaguah. The Sharks can guarantee themselves top spot with victory.

Bairnsdale RSL will travel to Apex Park, Traralgon, to take on Centrals.

The final record breaker, girls captain Bridget Cain broke the Open 200 metre butterfly time held by another Australian and Traralgon representative Mikaela Cornelissen, swimming 2.20.88 nearly two seconds under the old record.

Club Performance coaches Dean Gooch and Cam Juha have been impressed with their squads and in particular the record breaking athletes: “We have had a drastically interrupted season, however the way that our swimmers have kept themselves fit when out of the water and then returning back to the pool has been inspirational and rewarding to us as coaches,” they said.

“It goes to show that in challenging and difficult

times our swimmers have responded and bounced back better than ever. We are so proud of not only these record breakers but the whole team - a terrific group of young people.”

The club is now heading towards two major competitions this month - the Victorian State Sprints at MSAC and the Victorian Country Championships to be held at Warragul over the Australia Day weekend.

In March 2021, the Traralgon Swimming Club will also be basing itself out of the new Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, an outstanding centre the club will be proud to call its home pool for years to come.

Traralgon trio sparkle in win CRICKET

TRARALGON triumvirate Lee Stockdale, Jordan Gilmore and Nathan Freitag all impressed as Eastern Country defeated Western Country in a Victorian Country Cricket League representative contest in Bendigo on Sunday.

Eastern Country scored a decisive six-wicket win against their Western rivals in an entertaining contest played at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Batting first after winning the toss, Western Country were bowled out for 232 in 47.4 overs.

Stockdale’s left-arm spin conjured 1/28 from

seven overs, but the star of the show was paceman Tom Batters.

Batters, who plays for Bendigo United justified his late inclusion to the Eastern line-up, bowling with good pace to take 5/27 from 8.4 overs.

Cole Roscholler top-scored for Western Country with a sublime run-a-ball 92.

Gilmore opened the batting for Eastern Country.

He shared a 75-run first wicket partnership alongside Kierran Voelkl, who fell for 24.

Gilmore continued on his merry way and was in sparkling form.

The Ex Students ace hit eight fours and four

massive sixes in an explosive knock of 72 from just 59 deliveries before retiring not out to give some of his teammates a hit.

Glengarry star Freitag also looked in great touch, scoring 72 from 86 deliveries (including eight fours and one six) to put Eastern Country within striking distance of victory.

Stockdale missed out, scoring five, but sported a wide smile as the side he captained prevailed in the first of two contests.

Eastern Country will play Western Country in the second match of the representative series at the Junction Oval on February 7.

EVEN though the swimming season has been severely disrupted the Traralgon Swimming Club coaches and swimmers have been hard at work preparing for the remainder of the season with upcoming local, regional and state championships pencilled in for the next two months.

In preparation for these competitions the club has selected its captains for the 2020/21 season.

The girls captain is again Bridget Cain with Audrey Lee as vice-captain.

For the boys, Jordyn Cargill has stepped up from vice-captain to captain and will ably assisted by new vice-captain Will Pendergast.

With the limited competitions this season it has not stopped a number of club swimmers from having success in the pool with medals and records, both Gippsland and Country, totalling 18 to date this season.

Ash Nicholes, 14, has had the most success competing at the Queensland State Titles returning with four gold in the 50, 100 and 200 metre breaststroke plus the 50 free.

He also won silver in the 100 metre free breaking the Victorian Country age group record swimming 55.38 seconds.

Ash has also broken two further Country records and three Gippsland records in previous competitions held locally and is the club’s newest National swimmer having qualified in six events to date for the Australian Age Group Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in April this year.

Molly Cargill, 15, has also been in great form breaking six Gippsland records with the most impressive being the age group and Open 50 metre freestyle record of 26.75 seconds.

Brother and new captain, Jordyn continues his record breaking stint with two Gippsland records.

An outstanding swim was his time of 2.16.35 in the 16 years 200 metre Individual Medley breaking the previous record of Australian and Traralgon Club member, Jeremy Meyer from 2008.

Another Joel Baillie, 16, is growing in and out of the pool with his first ever Gippsland records recorded this season. His time for the Open record of 4.08.96 took more than five seconds off the previous time again held since 2008.

MOE Meteors opened its Country Basketball League men’s campaign with a comfortable 86-57 win against Korumburra Wildcats on Sunday.

Christian D’Angelo hit a game-high 27 points for the Meteors.

All 10 Moe players got on the scoresheet in the win which lifted the Meteors to top spot in the Gippsland Conference despite Maffra and Lakes Entrance also winning in Round 1.

Maffra edged out Sale 69-54, while Lakes Entrance won a bell-ringer against Churchill 86-83.

The Blue Devils almost pinched what would have been a great road win thanks in large part to the efforts of Jordan Canovan.

Canovan drained 28 points in a fine performance.

Jeremy Sheers (13) and Zac Bezzina (11) also hit double-figures for Churchill.

There was only one match played in the opening round of the women’s season with Korumburra recording a 71-58 win against Moe at the Newborough Leisure Centre.

The Wildcats had four players hit doublefigures in Grace Matser (16), Chloe Hogg, Alahna Arnason and Darci Holmes (each with 12).

Samantha Labros top-scored for the Meteors with 17 points and Caitlin Demczuk contributed 15.

Round 2 will be played this weekend.
